Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point
Only By Night shines among galaxy of stars in the making W
ITH three point-topoint fixtures, the three-day meeting at Cheltenham, and two days at Navan it’s hard to know where to start when summing up the influence of our sport over the course of last weekend. I’ll begin with the mares’ bumper at Navan on Sunday and work backward from there. I really liked the Gavin Cromwell-trained mare Only By Night when I rode her to win a bumper at Limerick last month so I was looking forward to getting another spin on the daughter of Affinisea in what looked a strong race on paper. I was even more impressed with her this time. She settled well for me in front soon after the off, travelled easily through the race, and picked up well when asked to go and win. For a mare who failed to sell for €900 at a foal sale in 2018, she’s turning into a fabulous success story. Garrett Murphy won a point-topoint with her at Lingstown and she made £110,000 at the Goffs UK Tingle Creek sale last December. She was placed at Warwick on her only start in Britain last season before coming back to Ireland to join Gavin’s team. The placed horses in Sunday’s race also started off in points. The Stuart Crawford-trained runner-up Mongibello was third in a good maiden at Oldtown last season and is a fine prospect for Simon Munir and Isaac Souede. Third-placed Qualimita, a headline-making purchase after winning at Fairyhouse in the spring, should not be long in adding her name to the list of winning graduates from the Colin Bowe stable. Colin has made a flying start to the season and kept up the pace by saddling a four-year-old winner at each of the three weekend meetings: Country Park at Quakerstown, Hawthorn Street at Tinahely and Star Walking at Turtulla. Meanwhile, Brechin Castle, a Shantou gelding who made a winning debut for the yard at Ballycrystal in February, made it two from two in bumpers for Ben Brookhouse when taking the Listed event on Sunday’s Cheltenham’s card. Qualimita’s trainer, Gordon Elliott, had a great couple of days at Navan

The Gavin Cromwell-trained Only By Night lands the mares’ bumper at Navan in one of many successes for former pointers over the weekend
with several of his important wins gained by horses with point-to-point experience. It was good to see American Mike take so well to chasing. He was one of the top bumper horses the season before last but his novice hurdling campaign didn’t work out nearly as well as expected. Watching him beat the talented Fact To File in Sunday’s beginners’ chase, I was reminded
‘Colin has made a flying start to the season and kept up the pace by saddling a four-year-old winner at each of the three weekend meetings’
of the reputation he held after Sean Doyle produced him to beat Matthew O’Connor Flynn’s High Class Hero by 20 lengths in a point-to-point. High Class Hero, who won during the 2021 autumn campaign, is now one of the most exciting staying novice hurdlers around. He’s unbeaten in four races, including a bumper, since joining Willie Mullins. Two of Gordon’s winners could end up clashing with High Class Hero later this season. Stellar Story, a Castlelands winner for Donnchadh Doyle, added to his two bumper wins when getting off to a fine start over hurdles in a two-and-ahalf mile maiden on Saturday. Croke Park, a Dromahane winner for Denis Murphy, led home a clean sweep for his stable in Sunday’s Grade 3 Monksfield Hurdle. Point-to-point recruits have helped to give great depth to the Elliott
novice team. On Saturday, What’s Up Darling, who won at Quakerstown last December for John Costello, beat shorter-priced stablemate Dee Capo in the Grade 3 For Auction Hurdle. He’s owned by Gigginstown who took the Troytown Chase with Coko Beach. Unfortunately, we can’t claim any credit for this tough and talented stayer who started off as a juvenile hurdler in France. The Gigginstown colours were also to the fore at the Tinahely point-topoint where Samcro, a dual Cheltenham Festival winner, coasted to victory in the open on his first race since completing a hat-trick in the same event 12 months ago. Originally a Monksgrange winner for Colin Bowe in 2016, he remains unbeaten in five starts in points. The Elliott team won the first division of the four-year-old maiden with the Harry Swan-ridden Kish Bank, while Barry O’Neill linked up with the stable’s five-year-old winner Big Stage, an attractive Walk In The Park gelding who has been given plenty of time to mature.
Autumn campaign full of high-quality four-year-olds
All in all, there was very good racing in the younger maidens last week. I know it’s a big statement, but nearly all the four-year-old maidens looked well above average. Obviously, they can’t all be future stars, but I think it’s safe to say that the autumn campaign is turning into a period of competitive, high-quality racing. Certainly, there will be no shortage of options for agents and trainers to focus on at forthcoming sales. Trade was encouragingly brisk at the Tattersalls sale at Cheltenham where two big transactions involved fillies. Harley Dunne’s Umma House winner Piper Park, by Walk In The Park, made the top price of £205,000, and Colin Bowe’s Tattersalls Farm winner Honky Tonk Highway, a daughter of Milan, changed hands for £165,000. Standards are high among mares at the moment. I was thrilled to be associated with a very good one at Navan on Sunday in Only By Night.

IN FOCUS Gerard Mulcahy on the hard work that goes into the course at Boulta
W
E’RE looking forward to the first of the two point-topoints here at Boulta on Sunday. It’s 22 years now since our first point-to-point and 30 years since our schooling grounds opened. Originally, this is was a tillage farm. Theere was a 25-acre fieeld and they galloped the horses on the farm, getting them ready for point-topoints. My father Matt, and uncle Joe Mulcahy, weere two pretty hand dyy amateur jockeyss in their day and d I rode a bit myself too. I came up witth the idea of creatting a gallop here baack in 1993 when th he original circuit was a mile around and it was only about 20 yards wide. Bit by bit we began expanding it. Rome wasn’t built in a day, an nd it takes a long timee for the ground to mature, so I wasn’t overly busy with it for the first decade; I was nurturing the ground, giving it time to settle. Foot-and-mouth put a stop to everything in 2001 but five of the local committees – Lismore, Avondhu, Tallow, Ballynoe and Killeagh – decided to come together and run an autumn point-to-point here on the land, and that was our first fixture.
‘It wouldn’t happen without everyone playing their part’ F
I’ve seen trainers jumping up and down as if there was prize-money up for grabs at the end of a schooling race. Denman came here before he ran in a point-to-point and I’ve never, ever seen a horse go around as quickly and jump as well as he did.
Gerard Mulcahy and his son Matt at the last fence on the Boulta gallops he first built 30 years ago; (left) the process of cutting wood for the fences, drawing it back and bundling it is a huge operation that begins in the middle of September
The late Bob Townend, uncle of Paul Townend and Davy Condon, played a big role in helping us to get the autumn points going here. For a while after we had twoday fixtures, I remember one year, I think it was 2007, we had 12 races on the Saturday and another 13 the following day. I don’t think that will ever be repeated! They were busy times, but it
was great craic. I remember the likes of Damian Murphy, Tom Lombard, Eoin Gallagher, James Sheehan – all the riders of that era – would be among about 40 lads who would go out on the track after racing on the Saturday to lift the fences and move them to fresh ground for the following day’s racing. But for the community involved, we wouldn’t have been able to do it.
It’s a more professional sport now. Gone are the days when the farmer would milk his cows in the morning and have two or three horses to work after. The big lads in Wexford and around here are in a different business, and places like ours play a big role in their preparations to have the horses ready to go first time. Even up to six or seven years ago you would have no three-
year-olds schooling here until the end of December, whereas now, if the ground is suitable, those three-year-olds are here jumping fences in October. I do call this place a field of dreams that can very quickly become a nightmare. Fortunes are changed; you can come into Boulta with high hopes for a young horse, and you go away very deflated, or it could be the opposite.
NEWS AND VIEWS
ERGIE SUTHERLAND won the Gold Cup with Imperial Call, and he did his last bit of work here before Cheltenham. Fergie was an absolute gentleman and I remember him leaving here and saying to me ‘When I come back I’ll have the Gold Cup with me’. He wasn’t wrong either! Bluesea Cracker, Monty’s Pass, Jonbon, Newmill, and Lovely Citizen are just some of the horses who have been here over the years but we’re always looking forward. My son Matt started running schooling hurdles about three years ago, which has proved very popular, and our fences are a big draw. Seven or eight years ago I started to design and develop our own hurdles and fences, which we got passed by the Turf Club, and the feedback we’ve had from trainers has been very positive. We have real birch in our fences which we grow ourselves, and that’s a huge part of our job every year. It’s backbreaking work at times but it’s why trainers come from all over the country, because their horses are jumping the real thing. After the Dungourney pointto-point here in December we put nine point-to-point fences around the outside circuit, and that’s when the serious work starts with the young horses. Matt and my wife Breda play big roles. It wouldn’t happen without everyone playing their part, especially with the busy months ahead of us but that’s our job, and that’s what we love doing. Christie pair in line for rearranged Fairyhouse
CURRAGHMORE is the latest fixture to be claimed by the heavy rain that has been a feature of this campaign. Kirkistown and Rathcannon have fallen victim to storms in recent weeks and the Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Committee has announced that the Waterford Foxhounds fixture on Saturday, December 2 has already been cancelled due to ground conditions. That loss leaves just nine fixtures before the autumn term ends with the doubleheader at Boulta and Tattersalls on Sunday, December 10. Weather woes also affected the first hunter chase of the s e a s o n , w i t h Fa i r y h o u s e
waterlogged after 20mm of rain fell during Storm Debi before the November 14 fixture. The meeting has been rescheduled for this Friday, with the hunter chase and point-to-point bumper part of the schedule. Entries have largely remained the same. The David Christie-trained pair Ask D’ Man and Global Assembly head the entries for the three-mile hunter chase in which the latter could renew r i va l r y w it h L i a m Bu rke’s Grange Island, while first-timeout maiden winners DB Cooper and Jeroboam Machin could have their first outings for new connections in the point-to-point bumper.
Big boost for Walk In The Park title challenge
The Tattersalls Cheltenham November sale set the tone for the weekend’s pointing action for Walk In The Park’s offspring. His daughter Piper Park, a debut two-length winner at Um ma Hou s e la st m o nt h, topped the opening sale of the season when Tom Lacey went to £205,000 to secure the fouryear-old from Harley Dunne. That produced a fine profit for the Wexford handler who had bought her with his weightent colleague Rob James for €58,000 at the Derby sale 17 months earlier. The 48 hours after the sale brought three points successes
for Walk In The Park’s offspring, including the debut at Tinahely of the €100,000 Goffs Land Rover sale graduate Big Stage for Gordon Elliott. The treble brought the sire’s seasonal tally to five, one shy of table-topper Shirocco. Success in the champion-sire category in point-to-points can o ft e n b e d e te r mi n e d by a stallion having several successful older horses in the winners and open divisions. However, with none of his 36 offspring who hold a hunter certificate aged seven or older, and all bar four aged four or five, his title hopes will lie with maiden winners. It is in that division that all
five of his winners between the flags this season have come, but with a strong team of four-yearolds for the spring a repeat of last weekend’s fortunes would enhance the chance of a titlewinning campaign.
Kavanagh four-year-old first to claim a cert
The new season of four-yearolds moved a step closer with the arrival of the first hunter certificate for that generation. The French-bred Claim The Throne is the first to receive a cert among the 2020 crop who take to the track from February. A son of Kapgarde, he was part of the first draft of stores consigned by Micheal O’Brien
in his own name when offered by his Creighmore stables at last summer’s Goffs Arkle sale. A vendor buyback on that occasion at €48,000, he is now in training with Roderic Kavanagh. His Glending stables came to prominence this year when selling the now dual Group 1 winning Vandeek for 625,000 guineas at the Craven Breeze-Up sale. Kavanagh is no stranger to the pointing fields, having ridden 15 winners on open horses such as Dom Fontenail and Dantes King, and he has also certed a four-year-old son of Cokoriko named Jealous Guy, who could b e a first runner for him as a handler.

WEEKEND REPORTS
COUNTY CLARE AT QUAKERSTOWN SATURDAY
‘He’ll improve again’ – Lifetime Ambition aims for Aintree Foxhunters’ LAST year’s Troytown Chase runner-up Lifetime Ambition has had his sights lowered to open lightweights with the straightforward task of following up his impressive return to the pointing fields at Ballycrystal a month ago. Odds of 1-8 gave an indication of his task against just two rivals in the Connolly’s Red Mills ladies’ open and his supporters had few moments of concern as Susie Doyle guided the eight-year-old to a five-length defeat of Plan Of Attack. “He’s giving a bit of a blow and will improve again from that,” trainer Pat Doyle said. “He gave Susie a grand spin and I’m thinking we’ll look at another open for him next with the Aintree Foxhunters’ his long-term objective.” Lifetime Ambition has experience of the Aintree fences after reaching Valentine’s

Brook on the first circuit of last season’s Grand National where he was badly hampered by a loose horse and unseated Sean O’Keeffe. It proved to be even easier for Chancernotadancer as she returned alone in the Grove Bar & Restaurant five-year-old mares’ maiden. Five horses set off but by the second-last the newcomer Prophet Squeeze was the only rival left against Tom Keating’s daughter of Malinas. Even that challenge was short lived when she fell at the last, leaving Chris O’Donovan to finish alone, a victory that meant the Cork rider become the latest pointing centurion.
“ S h e ’s o n e w e ’ v e b e e n looking forward to running and will be a lovely chaser in due course,” Keating said. Walter Connors has had a profitable relationship with the offspring of the late Muhtathir courtesy of Envoi Allen and Qualimita. Half Past Tipsy became the latest winner by the former Haras du Mezeray resident to c a r r y t h e Wa t e r f o rd v e t ’s colours in the Tattersalls NH and Brian Foudy & Associates four-year-old mares’ maiden. Fourth at Rathcannon on her debut in the spring, her chief rival Geturguccion had finished third at Loughanmore, and the pair pulled clear in the straight with Half Past Tipsy proving two and a half lengths too good under Derek O’Connor. G e t u r g u c c i o n ’s t r a i n e r Donnchadh Doyle also had to settle for the runner-up spot in
the Coral Cup Sale by Goffs four-year-old geldings’ maiden when Maximum Offers was denied by Country Park. From the family of the 2016 Irish St Leger winner Wicklow Brave, Colin Bowe’s charge pounced late to account for his fellow newcomer by a head. “I think that was a good race that will work out well,” the winning jockey Barry O’Neill said. “He was good and tough for me when I needed him to be. I feel if he hadn’t missed the last a bit he’d have won even handier as he was getting me there the whole time.” Walk In The Park sired a double on the card as the success of Country Park was followed by The Pooka in the B u r r e n I n n f i v e - y e a r- o l d geldings’ maiden. first success of the season when combining with Marie Harding to land the Barry Plant Civil Engineering and Brian McMahon Racing maiden for novice riders with Saffron Hill. The Declan O’Keeffe-owned chestnut was in a league of his own from two out as he beat

Kish Bank began proceedings in the first division of the Coral Gold Cup Sale by Goffs and Veterinary Hospital, Gorey four-year-old maiden. The son of Mount Nelson, who carries the colours of the Crocodile Pockets Syndicate, stormed up the hill in the hands of Harry Swan to beat Copper Jack by 30 lengths. The same owners celebrated further success when Big Stage came home in front on his debut in the Golden Anchor Castletown five- and six-yearold geldings’ maiden. Barry O’Neill made most of the running on the Walk In The Park gelding, who never had to be asked for maximum effort to account for fellow newcomer Well Del. “He popped away grand and I didn’t ask too many questions,” O’Neill said. “He won well. It was a good performance.” O’Neill had ridden the

reble strike of a double as he also landed a division of the four-year-old maiden on Hawthorn Street. The Flemensfirth gelding stepped up from a noncompletion on his debut at Loughanmore to vindicate the high regard in which trainer Colin Bowe holds him. “We really like him and he did what he’s shown us at home,” Bowe said. “He made a bad mistake which ended his race on his debut, but he was professional here. He’s an exciting horse and he’ll be sold now.” Neat Locality gained a long overdue success in the T Swaine & Sons mares’ maiden as she turned a 12-month run of eight consecutive placed finishes into a breakthrough victory. The four-length defeat of Jollie Cosmos was notable too for Luke Murphy, as the bay is owned by his parents, John and Miriam, and supplied him with his first success as a handler. The DW O’Toole & Co Solicit o r s, C & D Re c y c l i n g , a n d Kavanagh Tarmac Ltd older maiden for novice riders saw new recruit Freemans Bay run
out a six-length winner for handler Sean Byrne. James Murray sent his mount to the front two fences from home and the pair kept on strongly to deny the frontrunning Haggard. “He is out of good racemare Oilily, who was second in the Champion Bumper at Punchestown,” Byrne said. “There are no plans, but that was a good performance.” Shiroccosmagicgem caught the eye of many when getting the better of geldings on her return to the pointing fields at Damma House two weeks ago. Back among her own sex for the Millhouse Veterinary & McDonnell Properties mares’ winners-of-two, the Eddie Power-trained five-year-old swiftly supplemented that victory with an eight-length defeat of Lilian Bland in the hands of Gerry Spain. “That was good. She might get a little break now before heading for a mares’ hunter chase at Cork in the new year,” said Ian Cleary, brother of owner Liam Cleary.
‘He’s a work in progress’ – Christie eyes Christmas hunter chase for Ramillies DAVID CHRISTIE described Ramillies as a work in progress after the Derr ylin handler gained the necessary improvement out of the eight-year-old to turn two recently placed efforts into victory. Placed in Grade 3 company as a novice last season for Willie Mullins, the grey raced front rank throughout the Quinlan Transp or t & Phil Purcell Engineering and Centenary Thurles open for novice riders. It was a change of tactics from his recent outing and under Alan O’Sullivan he proved four lengths too good for the Grade 1 winner Hardline. “He’s a work in progress. We’re just trying to find out a wee bit more about him all the time,” Christie said. “ I h a d a c h a t w i t h Pa u l Townend in Down Royal and he told me how to ride him. I passed that information on to Alan and he did it very well. “I might run him in another op en b e caus e he’s such a laidback horse. He’ll then go for the hunter chase at Down Royal at Christmas.” Tipperary handler Evanna McCutcheon gained great satisfaction from the success of A my r i n t h e Ga i n E q u i n e Nutrition, Kirby’s Pharmacy and Ballinroe International Transport five-year-old-andupwards mares’ maiden. The six-year-old was bred by McCutcheon out of the Naheez-sired mare Nhakira, a horse McCutcheon rode to success at Bandon almost ten years ago. It was John Barry who was in the saddle on the daughter of Mahler as she beat Cahirdown Lass by two lengths. “She’s a great jumper like her mother,” McCutcheon said. “She is a Mahler, and they are honest, but w e w ere a bit worried about the ground because she’s not a winter mare. “She might go for a winners’ race, I’d say, and could go for banks races.” C a h i r d o w n L a s s’s r i d e r Adam Ryan went one place better in the Tattersalls NH, CJ Sheeran & Co and Local Trainers four-year-old geldings’ maiden courtesy of Will The Wise. and-upwards maiden was confined to horses trained by handlers who had not trained more than ten winners in their careers. Success went to Wine An Dine, who had started his career with Tom Keating and gave Ardfinnan handler James Condon a first win since 2011. Fermoy handler Eleanor Broderick had doubly entered her homebred Lisleigh Lad in that maiden and the earlier Coral Gold Cup Sale by Goffs five-year-old geldings’ maiden. ENTRIES have a reference number to the horse’s last run, form figures (latest on right), owner, handler and exclusive rating (same scale as rules RPR). For penalised horses we suggest deducting half a point per pound (penalties not confirmed until race-day). Irish point-to-point entries are ordered as follows: 1 Horses whose owner has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) owner, (b) horse. 2 Horses whose handler has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) handler, (b) horse. 3 Remaining horses, ordered alphabetically. Abbreviations: B-brought down; b-baulked; C-carried out; d-disqualified; F-fell; P-pulled up; R-ran out; r-refused; S-slipped up; U-unseated rider.
