Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point
Colin is in record-breaking form and Barry O’Neill is flying too
W
E’RE on the last lap now with only two fixtures left: Dromahane on Saturday and Tralee on Sunday. Most of the seasonal honours are done and dusted but there are a few things still left in play, including Colin Bowe’s bid to break the record of 47 wins in a season set by Robert Tyner in 2008. Colin is a nine-time champion handler, recording a seasonal best of 45 in 2019. He moved to within one of that total with a winner at Ballingarry last Saturday and a treble at Inchydoney on Sunday. The stable added to its four-yearold score thanks to Atlanta Brave, an Aizavoski newcomer who battled his way to a narrow win at Ballingarry, and Alden, a Walk In The Park gelding who progressed from his debut earlier in the month when taking the opening race at Inchydoney. A couple of five-yearolds completed the team’s treble at the Cork venue. It’s hard to know how much ammunition Colin has left, but his team is in terrific form (all three of his runners at Ballingarry on Sunday were placed), and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him add at least a couple more winners at the weekend. The stable’s run of form has resulted in Barry O’Neill, assured for a long time of retaining his overall title, putting himself into contention for the southern championship, which was previously boiling down to a match between James Hannon and Chris O’Donovan. A Hannon double on Saturday brought his regional score to 20, two ahead, but Barry is finishing strongly and is now on the 17-mark. It’s a tussle that will add to the interest of the final weekend. The first leg of the Hannon double came on RS One, a Harry Kellytrained Malinas gelding who put up a good debut performance to beat my mount West Clare in the fiveyear-old geldings maiden at Ballingarry. That was the closest I came to riding a winner on the penultimate weekend of the season. I had better luck on the track earlier in the week. I was delighted to be asked to step in for the absent

Billaway at Cheltenham, he already looks a likely strong contender for top honours at Cheltenham and Aintree next season. The stable has had a very successful point-to-point campaign 20 wins and got another hunterchase success on the board thanks to Handy Headon under Ben Harvey at Downpatrick last week, following up a maiden win at Down Royal at the beginning of the month. The northern scene continues to be very competitive, and the likes of Stuart Crawford, Pat Turley, Colin McKeever and Caroline McAldin have also made their presence felt this season.
Powerful demand for Irish jumping prospects
D’Last Spez was one of three winners for Colin Bowe at Inchydoney on Sunday alongside Alden and Bents Hollow
James King on Downtown Getaway in a novice hunter chase at Huntingdon. This nine-year-old has been in good homes all his life. He was bred by the late Peter Magnier in partnership with Mags Mullins, who
‘Colin’s team is in terrific form, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him add at least a couple more winners at the weekend’
trained him when he won a bumper at Fairyhouse as a four-year-old. He later won twice over hurdles for Nicky Henderson and ran once for Willie Mullins before going back across the water to be trained by Peter Bowen. He won a handicap chase at Ffos Las during the winter but then seemed to lose his way before returningg to form since switcching to point-topoiints, with Peter’s son Mickey M taking charge. It looks as if he has found f his niche now. Last L week’s success came c a little less than a fortnight after a Keelso win and the plan is fo or him to run in the Cham mpion Hunter Chase at Stratford on Friday. There are two Irish possibles for the race this year, both trained by David Christie. He has entered the
Punchestown championship runnerup Vaucelet, who won the novice hunters’ chase on the Stratford card last year, and Some Man, who won his seventh open of the season at Inchydoney last Sunday. Vaucelet would have a good chance in a race that has had three Irish-trained winners in the last ten years: Salsify for Rodger and Colman Sweeney in 2012, Mossey Joe for Declan McNamara and Damien Skehan in 2013, and Chosen Dream, a 66-1 winner for Graham McKeever and Mark O’Hare in 2018. That last one I won’t forget in a hurry because I rode Chosen Dream’s stablemate Balnaslow, who started favourite but could finish only fourth. It will be interesting to see how the seven-year-old Vaucelet measures up against the home team if David gives him the go-ahead. Along with the year-older stablemate Winged Leader, who was only just denied by
Last week’s Goffs UK sale at Doncaster underlined the strength of the market for Irish point-to-pointers and other young Irish jumping prospects. The two-day sale, which was celebrating the 60th anniversary of its founding as Doncaster Bloodstock Sales, had a superb 90 per cent clearance rate and broke several records. The top three consignors in terms of aggregate were Donnchadh Doyle, Colin Mc Keever/Wilson Dennison and Denis Murphy, while Robert Tyner, Harley Dunne and Stuart Crawford also made a big impact. The top lot was Porthill, who finished second for Colin McKeever behind the Rob James-trained Adieulevieux Enki in a maiden at the Fairyhouse point-to-point track last month. He was bought by the Willie Mullins/Harold Kirk team for £250,000. Two big-price sales gave us a reminder – as if we needed one – of the loss that Robert Tyner will be to the training ranks when he retires. Passing Well, a Coastal Path gelding who was second in a 21-runner bumper at the Punchestown festival fetched £185,000, and Myretown, who I rode to win a maiden at Dromahane last month, went for £135,000. The way the sales season has gone through the winter and spring is proof of a thriving market and a good sign for next month’s Goffs Land Rover Sale (June 7-9) and the Tattersalls Derby Sale (June 22-23).

TALENT SPOTTER Bertie Finn relates how he became involved in pointing and his path to success
M
Y FATHER Paul was part of the Wexford hurling team that won the 1996 All-Ireland title and even though I have followed in his footsteps to play for the county minor team last year, racing always had a big pull for me. Nobody in my immediate family was involved in racing, but Paul Gahan, who rode in point-to-points for a couple of years, is a second cousin of mine and his father Billy would have hunted a good bit and held a handler’s permit too. I probably got my interest in racing from them as I used to spend a good bit of time with them when I was younger, and growing up I was mad keen to get started with horses. I didn’t leave my father much choice but to get a pony for me to start off with. Mick Goff would only be five minutes over the road from home, and when I was about 13 or 14 I went into his yard and I spent nearly four years there in total on weekends or school holidays. Any opportunity I could get, I would be trying to get off school to go down. I actually never did pony club, hunting or anything like that, so I learned pretty much everything from being in Mick’s, where I sat on my first thoroughbred. Everything was new to me, but I loved it. Shane Fitzgerald was in Mick’s the whole time that I spent there. He has moved on to bigger things but he taught me an awful lot. Shane was

good to take me around with him to plenty of different yards and schooling gallops. I was probably a pain in the arse for him, but he took me anyway and he was a great man to learn from. I had my first ride in a pointto-point at Fairyhouse last year and having not done any pony racing it was my first try at any
type of racing. I had to wait until I turned 17 to get my licence out and with Covid stopping the season, I was only really able to get it out for the one month of last season when it restarted in May last year. I moved to Colin Bowe’s yard about six weeks before the start of this season. I had
been in Mick’s from when I was very young and felt that I was there a good while. It was the only yard that I had ever ridden out in, and I thought that the change and getting more experience in different yards might stand to me. I rang Colin and he said he would sort something out for
me and since then he has been very good to me. It’s a much bigger yard. At the peak of the season you could be riding out seven lots a day when it’s very busy, but I’m learning a lot. Just being able to look at Barry O’Neill and Rob James going up the gallop and schooling horses every day brings you along as a rider and

they are always there to ask if there is anything you should be doing to improve. Even Colin would take you to the side and tell you anything you’re doing right or wrong. It’s a very easy going yard and everyone would try to help you out as best they can. I am full-time with Colin but whenever there is any schooling to be done for anyone else he’s always encouraging me to get my name out. I rode my first winner at Borris House in March on Mangan Sue for Pat Doyle, who I school for. Shane Fitzgerald used to do a good bit of schooling for Pat and he brought me with him to school. When Shane turned professional Pat had my number and rang me to school for him and that is what got me the ride on Mangan Sue. Both my mother and father were able to make it to Borris, which was great, and in the space of a few weeks since that first win things have really taken off as I have ridden six winners this season for five different handlers. I got my first double at Stradbally, which is a track I hadn’t ever ridden at before, but I managed to win with both of my rides on Good Source for David O’Brien and on Old Page for Peter Flood, which was a spare ride. It worked out well and it was brilliant to get a double on the day. Now the point-to-point season is quietening down I will be able to get back to the hurling for the summer with my local club in Oulart, as the championship is due to start next month. The plan is to stick with the point-to-points. It’s starting to go well for me now, so hopefully that will continue. BERTIE FINN WAS TALKING TO EOGHAIN WARD

Lalor stable in hospital after Ballingarry fall THE point-to-point sector have been sending their best wishes to Liz Lalor as the recordbreaking rider remains in hospital having been airlifted from Ballingarry point-to-topoint on Saturday. The Tipperary native, who hit the headlines earlier this year when passing Helen Bryce S m i t h’s 3 1 - ye a r re c o rd t o become the most successful female rider in the history of Irish point-to-point racing, was aboard U Asking Me, trained by her partner Tom Keating, when the pair fell at the final fence in Saturday’s finale, which necessitated her air evacuation from the track direct to hospital. On Monday afternoon, IHRB (Irish Horse Racing B oard) senior medical officer, Dr. Jennifer Pugh, issued an
update on Lalor’s condition: “Following a fall on Saturday at the Ormond point-to-point fixture in Ballingarry, Liz Lalor was transported to Cork University Hospital by Irish Community Rapid Response (ICRR) Air Ambulance. “Liz is conscious and remains stable with chest injuries. I’d like to thank the IHRB Medical Team on duty and Tipperary Irish Red Cross, who were at the point-to-point fixture as well as the ICRR Air Ambulance crew.” Regional secretary Frankie Ward also praised several of Lalor’s weigh-tent colleagues, including James Hannon, Pa King and Hannah Phillips, who not only arranged the return of Keating’s horses to his yard while he was driven to hospital,
but gathered Lalor’s belongings and brought her car home. The proceeds of Frances Austin’s charitable tea collect i o n at th e fi xture w il l b e donated to the air ambulance.
Christie in search of Vaucelet compensation
After a pair of agonising defeats at Cheltenham and Punchestow n already this s eas on, David Christie goes in search of compensation on Friday evening’s hunter chase card at Stratford. His Derrylin stable suffered agonising defeats on the big stages of Cheltenham and Punchestown with both Winged Leader and Vaucelet. The latter now looks set to go in search of victory at Stratford for the second year running.
The seven-year-old announced his arrival in the division when landing the champion novice hunter chase 12 months ago and Christie looks set to rely on him in the Stratford Foxhunters Champion Hunter Chase. Travelling horses from these shores have a strong record in t h e £ 2 0 , 0 0 0 c o nt e s t, w i t h Chosen Dream, Mossey Joe and Salsify all successful in the last ten years. Recent Largy open winner Ask D’Man will look to follow in the footsteps of his stablemate Vaucelet when tackling the champion novice hunter chase, a race that could also feature Emmet Mullins’ hat-trick seeking Its On The Line. The five-year-old has already
won hunter chases at Cork and Tipperar y in recent weeks having been purchased by the Grand National w inning trainer for £8,000 in March from the ThoroughBid online auction.
Tralee handed honour of closing the season
The cancellation of this year’s two-day fixture at Kinsale will see a new venue bring the season to a close, an honour that has now fallen to Tralee. The North Kerry committee has embraced the roll with a series of presentations to be made to a number of the season’s title winners at the fixture, which takes place on the site of the former Tralee racecourse. Gain Equine Nutrition will
sponsor the presentations alongside their significant existing support of point-topoint fixtures across the country through their annual mares’ series. Michael Phillips, business manager with the leading feed company and himself twice a winner of the senior riders’ title, will be on hand to recognise this year’s leading rider Barry O’Neill, the top female rider Susie Doyle, the leading under-21 rider Brian Dunleavy and champion handler Colin Bowe, a Gain customer. The fixture will also feature a pony race, a dog show and bouncy castles. The track will begin watering of the course today to provide yielding ground.

ORMOND AT BALLINGARRY SATURDAY
Impressive double boosts Hannon’s hopes of title win JAMES HANNON bolstered his chances of claiming a first regional title in the south when riding a double on the opening day of the two-day Ballingarry f i x t u re t o p u t h i m o n t h e 20-winner mark, two ahead of Chris O’Donovan. It was initiated by the impressive debut victory of RS One in the Clifton Farm fiveyear-old geldings’ maiden. Carrying the colours of his locally based handler Harry Kelly, the Malinas gelding was never far from the lead, and once making striking ground to move to the front at the end of the back straight, he was never going to be caught. The Roger McLoughlin-bred bay accounted for the more experienced West Clare by a comfortable three lengths. “He was very good and very impressive,” Hannon said. “He travelled everywhere, jumped and, if anything, I was probably in front too early. We always thought that he was good enough to win a bumper and we were just waiting for a bit of good ground.” Hannon was then reunited with The Galahad Kid in the Fay Memorial & Liffey Mills geldings’ winner-of-one, a horse he had steered to a widema rg i n ma i d e n v i c to r y at

Dromahane three weeks earlier. Paul Kiely’s six-year-old brought by far the strongest piece of form after that recent success, and his numerous supporters, who made him the well-backed even-money favourite, had few moments of concern. The task of the Quest For Peace gelding was simplified when his chief rival, the Tattersalls scorer Chato Santana made a bad error at the penultimate fence which immediately put him on the back foot. To his credit Jamie Scallan’s mount did valiantly give chase approaching the home straight, however it proved in vain with The Galahad Kid three lengths t o o g o o d to c o mp l e t e t h e Hannon double. C hat o Sa nt a na’s t ra i n e r Cormac Doyle had better luck in the opening Goffs four-yearold mares’ maiden when On Se Calme took a notable step forward from her Lisronagh debut three months earlier.
The No Risk At All mare, who cost just €10,000 at Arqana in 2019, had beaten only one rival home in that opening effort, however the switch to a quicker surface certainly aided her cause as she looked a different prospect by beating Colin B o w e ’s L a r g y r u n n e r- u p Sheeka Supreme by two lengths. This 97th career success for winning rider Harley Dunne, and his first when riding for the Wexford handler, came almost three years to the day since he last rode for the youngest of the three D oyle brothers who currently hold handler permits. Bowe gained swift compensation in the next race when his Atlanta Brave opened his account at the first time of asking in the Dungar Quality Oats four-year-old auction maiden. The £19,000 Aizavoski gelding was strongly pressed by fellow newcomer Quickly Now Please, who challenged him on two separate occasions after the penultimate fence as the pair set up a thrilling finish for spectators. Foremans open for the second year in a row as 12 months on from the victory of Poli Roi in the 2021 edition, it was the turn of Stamp Your Feet to make the successful trek from his Larne base. The ten-year-old had been left clear to win at Largy on just his second start in the sphere last month, and he showed that victory, which had seen him become the first son of Galileo to win in the pointing fields on these shores, was no fluke when doubling his tally. Stephen Connor, who had picked him out at the Doncaster sales in January, brought the former five-time track winner to the front after
the final fence from where the pair were able to repel the challenge of a resurgent All Hell Let Loose. “He won handy enough,” Connor said. “There’s a hunter chase in Cartmel and a hunter chase in Listowel, so I would say that we’ll go for one of them and then give him a break.” Cork handler Noel O’Neill is best known for his exploits with the Grade 3-placed Ministerforsport, a horse with whom he won three consecutive races in the pointing fields, and he enjoyed his first victory in this sphere since that horse claimed a winners-of-two at Ballyvodock in 2017 when Gata Ban landed the Fairymount

Woodfield Symphony hits all the right notes T W E LV E m o n t h s a f t e r finishing second in The Glue Pot & T Toohey & Sons older maiden, and despite not having been seen in competitive action in the interim, Woodfield Symphony went better in the 2022 race. T ra i n e d i n Wo o d s t o w n , County Waterford by Rosemary Connors for her partner Henry Carey, the eight-year-old made her near annual appearance at the fixture, with her two most recent appearances having come at the Tipperary venue some two years apart. Returni ng from another sizeable absence, the Mahler mare made every inch of the running in a change of tactics, a decision from which connections reaped the rewards as Barry Stone steered her to a f o u r- l e n g t h v i c t o r y o v e r Edmond Kent ’s homebred Stellar Symphony. “It’s a case of third time lucky with this mare,” said Connors. “She’s had a few hold-ups as a young mare but has come back r ight now thankfully. She enjoys the quick ground and, all being well, we might run her on the track over the summer now.” It was Gemma Dewhurst’s Ni n e t e e n s i xte en w h o ha d beaten Woodfield Symphony on last year’s card, and that 11-year-old was unable to record a second victory at the track when pulling up in the Fa i r y m o u n t P r o p e r t i e s & Seymore Kenny winner-ofthree for novice riders, a race which went the way of Rule Of June. The Rule Of Law mare had to overcome the persistent challenge of recent Bartlemy runner-up Fiery Brown as the pair fought out a tight finish, with Rule Of June prevailing by a head to provide Dublin rider Alex Har vey with his sixth success of the campaign. Josh Younge had a day to remember when he recorded his first success in the saddle on Spy Lady in the Murphy Contractors & Duggan Vet Supplies six-year-old mares’ maiden. The Shirocco mare had failed

Wrestlingwithrae overcame signs of greenness approaching the final fence to suggest there is plenty more to come
to finish on her debut when under the care of Robert Tyner, however she justified market support on her first outing for Michelle Gannon as the sixyear-old beat the now six-time placed Chitchally Sally by four lengths. The victory was the third individual horse the former r i d e r t u r n e d ha n d l e r ha d saddled to win this season from four runners. The 420-mile round trip from D rap e r st ow n i n No r t h e r n Ireland proved to be worthwhile for Noel Kelly when his Wee Rup ert also justified market support to open his account at the sixth time of asking in the Jimmy Neville Memor ial six-year-old geldings’ maiden. Approaching the home
straight victory looked far from assured for Oran McGill’s mou nt a s t h e D ro ma ha n e runner-up Eveningofsummer looked to have stolen a march on his rivals, only to make a serious blunder at the final fence. That handed the initiative to the northern raider, who went on to beat Gouazec by three lengths. For the second day in a row the opening race at the Tipperary venue was won by C o r m a c D o y l e ’s M o n b e g stable, as Wrestlingwithrae proved a length and a half too good for his rivals in the Tattersa l l s N H f ou r- yea r- o l d geldings’ maiden.
Following in the footsteps of his stablemate On Se Calme in the mares’ equivalent 24 hours earlier, the €15,000 purchase, who is out of a half-sister to W i l l i e Mu l l i n s’ f i v e - t i m e winner Themoonandsixpence, was sent to the front at the midway point by Luke Murphy. From there the Snow Sky gelding was able to hold off the Colin Bowe duo, Roger Pol and Uco Valley. That pair were both carrying the colours of Ben Halsall, who had trained his first winner at Punchestown just eight days earlier with open scorer Visioman. Special Prep had failed to make much of an impact in that open lightweight in
Punchestown, but his connections happened upon an ideal opportunity for him, as he beat just two rivals to claim the Dr Sazenski Memorial Ladies open. A three-time winner on the track, the Billy Codd-trained ten-year-old was always to the fore under Georgie Benson and he went on to outclass Dubai Dandy, who was running at the venue for the second day in a row, by four lengths. The Brian Boru gelding had started his career by winning twice in the pointing fields for Codd’s late son William before progressing to the track where he was top rated 137 over fences.
“We’re thrilled with that,” the winning owner and handler said. “He had been owned by a family friend Eric Elliott, who had him in training with Pauline Robson in England, and he was a grand servant for them. It’s a nice to get a win with him and Georgie gave him a lovely ride.”

Some Man edges ahead in title race with his seventh victory THE David Christie-trained Some Man edged a step closer to becoming this season’s champion pointer by landing his seventh victor y of the campaign, three ahead of a clutch of six rivals. Also successful at Ballindenisk the previous Sunday, Some Man gave his supporters major cause for alarm after a third-last fence error in the three-runner Clonakilty Food Company op en, where he marginally overtook long-time leader Some Are Lucky with two fences remaining. Th e re wa s t h e n l i tt l e t o separate the pair when they collided at the last, but the winning nine-year-old was fractionally stronger in the closing stages as he asserted inside the final 50 yards to beat the gallant Some Are Lucky by a half-length in what was the closest finish of the afternoon. “Some Man has run four weeks in a row and he just did enough here to get the job done,” Christie said of the Ray Nicholas-owned Some Man,

who has now won 11 points and two hunter chases. Some Man’s rider Rob James departed with two winners as he was earlier on the mark aboard the Colin Bowe-trained D’last Spez in the Chris McCarthy Green Build fiveyear-old geldings’ maiden. D’last Spez, having pulled up on his two previous outings this season, was bounced out in front and the winning son of Cokoriko got into a lovely rhythm. The eventual winner was joined by Lucky Zebo from three out, however the latter was beaten after the penultimate fence as the victorious bay asserted to score by ten lengths. “We always knew that he had
ability, but he was just green in his head and he just needed the few runs,” Bowe said of the Milestone Bloodstock Ltd-owned D’last Spez who traces back to Grey Shot. Handler Bowe, who described Inchydoney as a lucky track for him, experienced a stellar afternoon as he saddled a three-timer of his own with his two remaining winners both being partnered by Barry O’Neill. The duo opened their account with Alden in the Dunmore House Hotel fouryear-old maiden. The Walk In The Park gelding, having run more than respectably despite pulling up on his debut at Broughshane a little over two weeks earlier, made his way to the front before the last and was always holding Littlefoot with a length separating the pair. “He had a nice run in Broughshane, but he ran into traffic problems as he got a bit crowded after making a mistake three out,” Bowe said of the €52,000 graduate of the
2021 Goffs Land Rover sale who is a maternal grandson of G ra d e 2 juve n i l e w i n n i ng hurdler Lounaos. “Bar r y [O ’Neill] said he would win the next day and we fancied him today.” Bowe and O’Neill, who are both on course to defend the leading handler and rider titles, later combined to collect the Frenhill House Hotel & Gardens mares’ maiden with Bents Hollow. The Soldier Of Fortune-sired Bents Hollow, whose dam is a
half-sister to Gordon Elliot’s mare Glan, who won a €100,000 handicap hurdle at Fairyhouse over Easter, stepped up from her fifth-placed debut effort at Dawstown behind last week’s £110, 000 Goffs UK May sale graduate Thermusa, by leading from three out to beat Conor’s Gift by five lengths. “She ran well in Dawstown and she’s a lovely mare with a professional attitude that will now go to a sale,” Bowe said. continued his upward trajectory by coming home as he pleased under Chris O’Donovan in the Clogheen Homes winner-of-one. The Dawstown maiden winner, representing Owen O’Flynn, set sail for home from six out and coasted clear from after two out to beat Niall Kelleher’s mare Peggy Gordon by eight lengths. Ott’s son Andy Burke Ott indicated Inchidaly Copper, rated 85 over hurdles, could run again at Dromahane on
Saturday. Tw enty-one-year-old Adamstown native Kieva Hynes, who works with Paul Nolan, ro de a first care er success on Sean Doyle’s Local Rogue in the Springmount Stud six-year-old and upwards geldings’ maiden. Having been placed no fewer than seven times in points, Local Rogue was always on the pace and the Edward Powerowned bay asserted from the last to thwart the staying-on Useitorlooseit by a length.
(Above left) Some Man claims his seventh victory of the season; (above right) the picturesque scene from Inchydoney during the mares’ maiden; (below left) the Sean Doyle-trained Local Rogue provides 21-year-old Kieva Hynes with a first career win; (below right) Inchidaly Copper follows up his recent win at Dawstown
