Air Of Entitlement in complete control as Lingstown fills gap

T

HE cancellation of last Saturday’s Curraghmore fixture could have left a gap in the schedule at a bad time with many handlers looking for opportunities before the Christmas break. Fortunately, Lingstown came to the rescue to fill the slot. A sevenrace card that featured three fouryear-old maidens went ahead after a morning inspection. The opening mares’ event was won by Colin Bowe with Air Of Entitlement, who made her debut in the Quakerstown maiden I won on Half Past Tipsy, one of the stars of the show when bought by Gavin Cromwell for £200,000 at the successful Coral Gold Cup sale at Newbury on Saturday. Barry O’Neill eased Air Of Entitlement after she was hampered at the second-last at Quakerstown, understandably keen not to give her a hard race after her chance had gone. On Saturday, she didn’t have a hard race either. She was in complete control from three out. A daughter of Westerner, she’s out of a mare called Carrigeen Karaka which immediately highlights that she is from the stout jumping family associated with Dick and Ann Lalor, parents of record-breaking point-topoint rider Liz Lalor. Carrigeen Karaka didn’t achieve anything but she’s half-sister to Rogue Angel, winner of the Irish Grand National in 2016 for Mouse Morris. Matt Flynn O’Connor and rider Brian Lawless took the two divisions of the four-year-old geldings’ maiden. Tumuch is a son of Buck’s Boum out of a French hurdles winner, and Going Live is a halfbrother by Doyen to James’s Gate, who won a bumper first time out for Willie Muillins the season before last and was third to Facile Vega in the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham. Both horses won with plenty left in the tank. When Beau’s Candle was beaten a neck by the Johnny Barry-ridden Born Braver in the finale at Lingstown, it was the first time Declan Queally had lost a race this season after five consecutive wins. It took him under 24 hours to get back on the winning trail since he

partnered Desert Ian to take the opening four-year-old maiden at Sunday’s Ballindenisk meeting. In the five year-old maiden Pat Doyle’s daughter Susie rode I Masked Du Potier to a 12-length win after Castle Croiuil went at the last when looking held. Susie went very close to completing a double in the open on Lifetime Ambition, who had already given her wins at Ballycrystal and Quakerstown this season.

However, Lifetime Ambition just lost out to the James Hannon-ridden Dinny Lacey in a tight finish. This was a boost to the form of David Christie’s talented youngster Ferns Lock, who beat Dinny Lacey readily on his seasonal debut at Dromahane. Owned by Brian Acheson and trained by James Motherway, Dinny Lacey will qualify for the Aintree Foxhunter if he can manage another open, which looks likely. He’s a bumper and novice chase winner who recovered his appetite for racing when sent point-topointing last season and won the Jack Tyner Memorial Hunter Chase at Cork at Easter.

The Borris House open was confined to novice riders and was won by the Gordon Elliott-trained Hardline, a first point-to-point winner for Josh Williamson, son of Janet and Norman. It was a memorable afternoon for the Williamson, Hyde and Swan families, because Josh’s cousin Harry Swan also got his name on the scoreboard, riding the Elliott-trained newcomer Machismo to beat my mount Jack To Bat in the second division of the five-year-old geldings maiden. It’s great to see Josh and Harry getting a taste of point-to-pointing, adding to the experience they’ve picked up riding in bumpers. The lads are sons of two of the best jump jockeys of all time and also have the history and tradition of the Hyde family in their blood. There will be no shortage of advice, support and encouragement for them. Denis Murphy saddled Port Joulain to an impressive win in the first division of the five-year-old maiden at Borris House, a third winner of the weekend for Jack Hendrick, who rode a double at Lingstown on Saturday. The first leg was supplied by Port Joulain’s stablemate River Agent who had warned up with a run in a strong bumper at Fairyhouse dominated by two potentially high-class point-topoint graduates, Jeroboam Machin and D B Cooper. Denis is one of the leading producers in the country and was responsible for The Bluesman, who was the joint-sales topper at the Newbury sale. He looked a fine prospect when third to the Elliotttrained Patter Merchant at Dromahane last month. Finally, a word of congratulation to Barry O’Neill, who won the point-to-point award at the HRI ceremony on Monday. I was privileged to be nominated along with Colin Bowe, Pa King and Maxine O’Sullivan. Barry was the most worthy winner after a season in which he won 64 races at a 33 per cent strike-rate and was crowned champion for the seventh time in a row. He’s setting a strong pace again with 19 on the board, ten clear of Dara McGill.

IN FOCUS Finbarr Cowman on the joy of sending out his first winner and the great names he has worked with

E

ATON ANNE was my first runner as a handler at Boulta last month and it was great when he made it a winning debut. What made it even more special was that I watched the race with my three-yearold daughter, Annie. Friends also came to support and Henry Carey and Rosemary Connors were a great help on the day. When I was growing up, we didn’t have horses at home, but my parents, Dan and Anna, loved racing. They were regulars at Tramore and enjoyed going to the festival meetings in Killarney and Listowel. My mother still goes racing with a friend and although my father passed away 13 years ago I believe he was with us in Boulta. Growing up, racing was on the television every Saturday and I loved watching it with my parents. I can remember getting off school early in March 1986 to see Dawn Run and Jonjo win the Gold Cup. I have the fondest of memories of going to Tramore races where my grand uncle Matty was the grounds manager. My grandfather and uncles all helped out on racedays too. I started riding ponies and began pony racing when I was a teenager with Johnny Roche in Tramore. Johnny’s sons Alan, Paul and Davy, and his daughter Claire Nicholls were all successful jockeys. Johnny was a talented horseman who handled some very good horses and, most notably, he broke Viking Flagship as a yearling. At the age of 14, I was the first to sit on Viking Flagship and it was an experience that will live with me forever. He was difficult and was never handled until Johnny caught

him as a yearling, but he ended up becoming really placid. Johnny brought me along to ride out point-to-pointers for the late Walter Halley, who trained very successfully. Johnny was a great man to give a horse time to develop. When I completed school I began working for Joe Crowley and his daughter Annemarie O’Brien in 1992.

It was not long after their yard at Carriganog, near Piltown, was built and it’s where Annemarie and Aidan’s son Joseph trains now. Aidan then took over the training licence and appointed me as his head man when I was 18. During my four years with Aidan I got to sit on some of the best jumps and Flat horses around at the time.

I had a few rides on the track and between the flags and I got to ride a winner at Ballyragget on Yes Man, who was a four-year-old first time out for Annemarie. Race-riding wasn’t one of my talents, but Yes Man went on to progress quite well for Henrietta Knight, winning five times over hurdles in Britain.

NEWS AND VIEWS

I bought Eaton Anne out of a field from his breeder, Fintan Farrell. He’s well related and is a half-brother to a black-type horse. Des Colbert, who has a great love for racing, bought a half share in him. He’s a patient man who understands that some athletes need time to develop. Des coaches with Waterford Athletics Club and his son Harry is competing at the European crosscountry championships in Brussels on Sunday. Eaton Anne has continued to progress since I broke him and he does all his homework alone. I have access to a hill gallop in Curraghmore Estate and a sand gallop and stables in Tramore. I was quite confident going to Boulta but I was also well aware we needed luck at the end of the day. Darragh Allen did most of the schooling on Eaton Anne but unfortunately he got the call to ride another horse on the day. John Barry replaced him at the last minute and, with little instruction from me other than “he’ll win’” he gave him a masterclass ride. Eaton Anne was still green but a combination of his class and John’s skill got him there. John said there was plenty of pace so he dropped him in and felt he was always going to win. He said he was really tough and responded every time he was asked. Eaton Anne will now be offered at the Tattersalls Cheltenham December sale on Friday week.

North Down reprieve gets Dennison support OWNERS and handlers in the northern region have welcomed the new date to replace theNorth Down Foxhounds fixture, which had to be cancelled due to waterlogging. The Kirkistown meeting scheduled for November 11 fell to heavy rain and its cancellation left owners and handlers facing a 13-week gap without point-to-point action in the region. The North Downs have now been added to the final weekend of the autumn term, taking advantage of the blank day this Saturday, November 9. The card gets under way with a foury e a r- o l d m a i d e n s p o n s o re d by Dennison Commercials, with last weekend’s Newbury fixture providing a timely reminder of the calibre of horses who have carried Wilson Dennison’s silks at the Down venue. Jeriko Du Reponet opened his account for Dennison in the fouryear-old maiden at Kirkistown in March and became second favourite for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle after a smooth success on his debut under rules for the Nicky Henderson stable

in the JP McManus silks at Newbury on Friday. That victory was swiftly followed by the Grade 2 Coral John Francome Novices’ Chase win of Hermes Allen. The six-year-old was in Dennison’s black and white silks when winning his four-year-old maiden at Kirkistown in November 2021.

rider races, races confined to handlers and the ten races which have been programmed for the six-year-old-andupwards horses,” Martin O’Donnell, chairman of the INHSC, said. “An additional race confined to lady riders has been programmed in January to complement the existing races in the spring season.”

INHSC switches backing to the spring programme

Connors and Muhtathir team up again for Half Past Tipsy

A total of 438 races feature on the provisional summary for spring 2024 which has been published ahead of the post-Christmas campaign, which commences at Dromahane on Saturday, December 30. The Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Committee has cancelled its winners’ final which failed to gain traction from handlers since its introduction, with that prize-money redistributed among other races. “The directors of the INHSC are pleased to contribute in excess of €23,000 in the upcoming spring season through its support for novice

Walter Connors’ successful run of sales-topping results with the offspring of the ill-fated sire Muhtathir continued on Friday when Gavin Cromwell secured his Quakerstown victor Half Past Tipsy for £200,000 at the Goffs UK Coral Gold Cup sale. The Sam Curling-trained four-yearold earned top billing at Newbury a l o n g s i d e D e n i s Mu r p h y ’s Dromahane third The Bluesman. That followed on from the €500,000 t h e Wa t e r f o r d v e t s e c u r e d f o r Qualimita at the Goffs Punchestown sale, following her debut success in Fairyhouse this year.

Rewinding to 2018, it was Envoi Allen, a son of the Haras du Mezeray stallion, who topped the Tattersalls Cheltenham February sale when Tom Malone purchased him for £400,000 after his Ballinaboola debut victory. The dual Group 1-winning miler died in September 2020, so there are not many more crops of Muhtathir four-year-olds with whom Connors can continue his lucrative association.

Impressive numbers as Bowe and Queally steal a march

Just two handlers have reached double figures in the autumn term, with Colin Bowe leading the charge on 17 winners, followed by Declan Queally, who is five adrift. The chasing Waterford handler had his 12th winner of the campaign with Desert Ian’s four-year-old maiden success in Ballindenisk on Sunday. While Bowe holds sway, his 24 per cent strike-rate is dwarfed by that of his pursuer as Queally has recorded his 12 successes from just 19 runners for a strike-rate of 63 per cent.

Until last weekend, no runner from the Queally stable had met with defeat since the final weekend in October, with all six runners in the pointing field in November returning victorious. That is a phenomenal achievement for a yard firing on all cylinders.

WEEKEND REPORTS

KILLINICK AT LINGSTOWN SATURDAY

Breathtaking Tumuch first leg of double for O’Connor and Lawless HANDLER Matthew Flynn O’Connor and rider Brian Lawless were the combination to follow as the pair landed both divisions of the Tattersalls NH, Gary Murphy and Michael Murphy four-year-old geldings’ maiden. After racing was put back 30 minutes to aid the thaw of overnight frost, the newcomer Tumuch initiated the Flynn O’Connor-Lawless brace by destroying the opposition in the first division. The Buck’s Boum gelding, who had taken the eye in the preliminaries, developed a nice rhythm in front and led until overtaken by Majestic Moment at the sixth-last of the 14 fences. Tumuch was back in front three out, however, and the €65,000 Derby sale graduate, whose dam is a half-sister to the dam of Tom George’s Grade 1 placed chaser Sir Valentino, stormed clear in breathtaking fashion after two out to beat

The pair swiftly returned to the number one spot when they struck with Going Live in the second division. The w i n n e r, w h o s h a p e d w i t h promise in finishing fourth to Leaky Cauldron at Ballycrystal in October, was another to benefit from frontrunning tactics. The son of Doyen was always in command after throwing a fabulous leap two out and returned with four lengths to spare over favourite Califet En Vol.

“He’s a grand horse who missed the break on his first start in Dromahane last season and things just didn’t work out after we dropped him in at Ballycrystal,” O’Connor said. Going Live, owned by the Cullen House Syndicate, is a half-brother to Willie Mullins’ Grade 1-placed bumper James’s Gate, and was bought for €70,000 at last year’s Goffs Land Rover sale. Jack Hendrick also rode two winners, opening his account on the Denis Murphy-trained River Agent in the DP Berry, JP Berry and Vincent Devereux five-year-old geldings’ maiden. River Agent, who finished sixth to Jeroboam Machin in t h e Fa i r y h o u s e p o i n t e r s bu mp e r o n Nove mb e r 2 4 , picked up the running before two out to beat The Risky Miskies by eight lengths in the colours of his handler’s mother Catherine. “It’s great that he has won and he might just have needed

To add to the thrilling finish, the Cheltenham Foxhunters’ runner-up Winged Leader was only two lengths away in third. Dinny Lacey, having chased home Ferns Lock at Dromahane last month, edged ever closer with regular partner James Hannon setting out on the final circuit as Lifetime Ambition led from Winged Leader. Dinny Lacey made his way to t h e f ro nt w i t h t w o f e n c e s remaining, but Lifetime Ambition staged a determined rally on the run to the last and a superb jump put him back in with every chance. Claire O’Connell’s homebred five-year-old Born Braver sprang a mild surprise under Johnny Barry by mastering long-time leader Beau’s Candle in the closing stages of the Byrne Racing, Pat O’Rourke and John Mar tin Walsh winners-of-two, to win by a neck.

It was Alright Montana who then secured the runner-up slot, 16½ lengths adrift of the winning son of Masked Marvel, who is now likely to receive a break before contesting a winners’ race. The David Christie-trained Hathaways Cottage became the only winner on the day to benefit from front-running tactics by recording an emphatic pillar-to-post success under Barry O’Neill in the Commercial Vehicle Components mares’ winners-of-two. Hathaways Cottage, who fell when held in second at the last on her previous start at Tinahely, developed a lovely rhythm and powered clear from two out to beat the previous Sunday’s Moig South winner Millie B by 24 lengths. “We always knew that the

engine was there and we could now look at the maiden hunter chase in Limerick over Christmas,” Christie said of the Ray Nicholas-owned mare. Marie Harding, who sent out Hathaways Cottage to win on her debut at Liscarroll last March, struck with Lep Around in the Shane and Michael O’Riordan Livestock Haulier mares’ maiden. Owned by Harding’s brother John in partnership with three friends, Lep Around went to the front before two out for Eoin O’Brien to win by 22 lengths. Jimmy Mangan was on the mark with Glady Max, the mount of Johnny Hurley, in the Noel Loftus T/A Loftus Flooring adjacent hunts maiden. Glady Max asserted from the last to beat newcomer Our Story in the colours of the Cloyne-based Any Given Day Syndicate.

‘A lovely spin’ – teenager Williamson delighted with first pointing winner FORMER Grade 1 winner Hardline gave Josh Williamson his opening success in the pointing fields with a widemargin success in the Boomerang.ie open novice riders. Heavy fog hindered racegoers’ ability to follow much of the day’s action, and when the 2018 Matchbook B e t t i n g E x c h a n g e No v i c e Chase victor emerged from the thick fog at the second-last fence, there was only going to be one winner. A €28,000 purchase at the 2022 Derby sale, the halfbrother of former Grade 2 winner Keeper Hill, proved to be three and a half lengths too good for the much-improved locally trained Jack To Bat. The opening division capped off a fine weekend for Denis Murphy when his Cokorikosired Port Joulain justified a €78,000 price tag at the store sales to open his account at the first time of asking. The Ballyboy Stables operator had enjoyed success at Lingstown 24 hours earlier before his Dromahane third The Bluesman was the joint top lot at the Goffs UK Coral Gold Cup sale when bought by Paul Nicholls and Tom Malone for £200,000. This French-bred is likely to be next seen in new ownership after beating the Dromahane sixth De Kingpin by six lengths.

Shillelagh-based handler Sean Osborne had not saddled a runner in the pointing fields for more than two and a half years, but the decision to take out his handler’s permit again was justified when Kyle Valley left her previous form behind her to land the George Mullins Transport five-year-old mares’ maiden under Pa King. Unplaced in three previous runs, the return to the pointing fields was rewarded as she supplied her handler with a first success in the sphere in close to a decade. “I had a good few winners years ago but I just took out the l i c en c e thi s yea r to r u n a couple,” Osborne said. “This mare hadn’t been that well when she ran last season, but she’s coming back to herself now.” Pa u l Ca s h m a n w a s a l s o visiting the winner’s enclosure for the first time this season with his first runner of the campaign when Holly Brook made a winning debut in the Jukebox Jury and Sea Moon at Burgage Stud four-year-old mares’ maiden. Thirteen horses set out for t h e W a l s h ’s H o m e Va l u e Hardware older maiden but Ask Mike returned in splendid isolation as Rob James’s mount was the sole finisher. He could now represent his Kilkenny handler Michael Butler in the maiden hunter chase at Limerick later this month.

Gaelic Warrior may be the next Mullins superstar

Sprinter Sacre looked special first time over fences at Doncaster, as did Galopin Des Champs at Leopardstown and Douvan at Navan. This extra-terrestrial display was up there… It’s a sure sign of stardom when any horse can make respected opposition look second-rate. Racing Post Weekender, 29th Nov

GAELIC WARRIOR

last seen landing the 3m Grade 1 novice hurdle at Punchestown in late April, was hugely impressive on his chasing debut at the same track last Saturday week

UNCHECKABLE won a 4YO Listed Chase in France last Thursday

Also sire of Cheltenham Festival winners QUILIXIOS (Grade 1 Triumph Hurdle) and ARAMAX (Grade 3 Fred Winter Juvenile H. Hurdle)

The Listed Prix Roger Saint [Chase] was turned into a procession by Uncheckable, as the Maxios gelding sprinted clear in the closing stages to run out an impressive winner. EBN, 1st Dec

Proven Grade 1 sire by MONSUN Contact: David Magnier, Albert Sherwood, David O’Sullivan, Andrew Magnier & Catherine Magnier: 025-33006. Robert McCarthy, Bobby McCarthy & Peter Kenneally: 058-56254. Tom Gaffney, Joe Hernon, Paddy Fleming, Cathal Murphy & Barry Kennedy: 025-31966.
