Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point
Worthy champions crowned at the end of a successful season
W
E’VE come to the end of a long season. There are many different ways in which we could look back at how things have gone since the first day of the campaign at the Ballymacad fixture at Oldcastle last September. Whichever way you look, it’s been another season which everyone in the point-to-point community can be proud of. There was a high standard in the maidens from beginning to end, reflected in an extremely healthy sales season. As a result of that, the main players should be in a good position to go back to the market at the store-horse sales. On the track, in Ireland and Britain, a great many horses who started life in the point-to-point field advertised the benefits of their early experience, whether in the season’s top races or in the novice divisions over hurdles or fences. After all the difficulties of the pandemic, it was great to have the crowds back this season. There was a good atmosphere around, we had plenty of runners, and local committees worked hard to make the race-day experience enjoyable and to provide good safe ground on wellprepared tracks. In general, there was a good spread of talent in yards countrywide, although, of course, there were some dominant operators. The first race of the season at Oldcastle was won by Reddys Island, a mare trained by Colin Bowe and ridden by Barry O’Neill. It was an early sign of how the pair are well and truly established at the top of the tree. Two winners for Colin on the final weekend brought his score to 46, just one short of the record set by Robert Tyner in 2009. He is champion handler for the tenth time. Barry added another three wins to his score at the weekend, ending on the 61 mark and doing just enough to share the southern region title with James Hannon. He won in the north and the east as well, but missed out on last year’s clean sweep, with Pa King taking the honours in the west. Pa had a good season overall with 27 wins, putting him in third place, ten behind

If I had one slight negative to say about the season, I thought some of the hunter chases were a bit thin in quality and quantity. On the other hand, you couldn’t complain about our leading hunters. Billaway was a deserving winner at Cheltenham and Punchestown for Willie and Patrick Mullins, and David Christie was responsible for the close-up second in both races, Winged Leader at Cheltenham and Vaucelet at Punchestown. David couldn’t have asked for a better end to the season. Vaucelet won the Champion Hunters’ Chase at Stratford and, on the same card, Ask D’Man captured the novice event which Vaucelet won last year.

Barry O’Neill rides his 61st, and final, winner of a memorable season on Montmartre Abbey at Tralee
runner-up Rob James, who had a memorable day on the track winning the Scottish National. Brian Lawless (22 wins) had an excellent season, and spare a thought for Chris O’Donovan (20), who narrowly missed out on a share of the southern championship. Jack Hendrick (18) enjoyed a fine season, and Harley Dunne deserves a
‘Dunleavy got plenty of experience, riding 13 winners from 105 rides, and is a rider who can progress his career in the coming seasons’
mention for combining two roles successfully. He recorded 15 wins in the saddle and eight as a handler. After just missing out last year, Susie Doyle was a deserving winner of the lady riders’ title with nine winners from just 18 rides. She’s a very capable horsewoman and had a good strike-rate. Runner-up was Liz Lalor, the multiple champion who broke Helen BryceSmith’s longstanding all-time record of 109 point-to-point wins at Comea in February. We’re all thinking of Liz now as she begins her recovery from a fall at Ballingarry. It was cruel luck so close to the end of a season in which she made history. There were 17 different women riders who got on the scoreboard,
including several for the first time. With any luck, the impact made by Rachael Blackmore will continue to be an inspiration to young women coming on the scene. It would be great if someday we might see her potential successor emerge from the point-to-point field. Brian Dunleavy, from Dungourney in Cork, took the under-21 title. He got plenty of experience, riding 13 winners from 105 rides, and is a rider who can progress his career in the coming seasons. Sharing second place with seven winners were the brothers Alex and Ben Harvey and Dan Nevin. There are plenty of good young riders around but the power of the Wexford stables will make it hard for anyone to make a major bid for the overall title from a base elsewhere. Perhaps someone like Dunleavy will be able to build strong enough links in the Cork and Waterford area in the future.
T HOME, the Christietrained Some Man was the outstanding open horse, winning seven times, including a quick hat-trick during May. But for slipping up at Largy in April, the nine-year-old Beat Hollow gelding could have won six in a row in the final two months of the season. He’s a credit to the yard, a brilliant horse for owner Ray Nicholas, who is a wonderful supporter of point-topointing in the north. La Feline, a seven-year-old daughter of Martaline, was the champion mare. She was a consistent performer throughout a busy season, never out of the first three in 11 starts between October and April. I was fortunate to ride her to three wins, and she was good enough to hold her own against the geldings on a number of occasions. She contributed to a good season for Sam Curling, second on the handlers’ list with 24 winners, one ahead of Donnchadh Doyle. It’s very competitive among the top handlers, so it was quite a feat for three individuals, David Christie (20 wins), Pat Doyle (11) and Declan Queally (10) to record a strike-rate in the 40 per cent range. Looking back on eight months of action we’re able to say that the point-to-point scene continues to thrive. That’s due to the dedication and skill of a great many people and the help of hard-working local committees, sponsors, supporters and enthusiasts. It’s been a good season.

TALENT SPOTTER Tom Harney explains how he became involved in point-to-point riding
R
ACE-RIDING is not something that runs in the family. My father is a sheep farmer and I was always outside on the farm, but we never had horses. My uncle, John Harney, had a few horses in training with Ross O’Sullivan and he had a pony that his kids had an interest in, so he asked my parents if they had an interest in taking it and they said why not. I hadn’t a clue how to ride it, but a friend of mine, Peter McCarthy, was very good on the pony games scene and he taught me all the basics. I wouldn’t have known how to sit on a horse but for him. I was mad for it after that and was always buzzing to go fast, even on the pony at home. We got a faster pony when I grew out of the first one and she had plenty of speed in her. She wasn’t a full thoroughbred but we said we’d take a chance
‘I was always buzzing to go fast, even on the pony we had at home’ going pony racing with her. I got a great buzz out of it. She wasn’t much good but it was great craic. It’s a great grounding and a brilliant introduction into racing. When I was 14 or 15 I went into Michael Halford’s for four years during the summer holidays or on weekends. That was my first time sitting on a thoroughbred. Conor Hoban, Shane Foley and Sean Corby were there and they taught me all the basics to get me going. After my leaving certificate I
tried college for a few weeks but it wasn’t for me. Ross was local to me in Kildare so I went to see if he had a job. He didn’t have the horses to give me a full-time job but he got me into Willie Mullins’ and I was there for over 18 months. I took my time to get going with race-riding. I thought there was no point going to the track and making a fool of myself and then when I was in Willie’s there was never really the opportunity to get rides, so I was lucky I was offered the job with Ross and Katie
[Walsh] at their new yard five years ago. There seemed to be a few opportunities there to ride their point-to-pointers and Ross said he would get me an experienced horse to start out on. Luckily, I’m riding most of the pointto-pointers here and a lot of the bumper horses in the yard. It’s a great place to be, having Ted Walsh’s place on the other side of the gallop; it’s a great spot to learn. Wexford and Cork probably have the biggest
concentrations of handlers so it’s harder when you are based away from that, even picking up spare rides. You wouldn’t think it, but Kildare probably has one of the smallest number of pointto-point handlers; there are more track trainers here, which makes it difficult. But you just have to keep looking down through the phone and ringing people. I’ve got to ride plenty of nice horses in the last few months, so it’s paying off. Tom Shaw is another who has been very good to me. He
gave me my first point-to-point winner aboard Keenaghan Lass at Tattersalls, and I’ve had two winners on her now. Tom has also given me track rides too. He’s a gentleman. Last month I rode my first winner over hurdles for Ross at Kilbeggan on Gotthenod (below). It was special to get it for his owner, Tommy Ward, as he has been with Ross for many years and is always very good to all the staff in the yard every Christmas and when he has a winner, so to repay him with a winner was brilliant. Ross and Katie have been a massive help to get me to where I am with my riding. I always ring Katie before I have a fancied horse and she gives me tips on how to ride a track. There’s no better woman for advice and experience. I’m very grateful to them both. I’ve had a good end to the season with a winner for Denis Hogan at Stradbally that Frankie Ward was kind enough to put me forward for, so it would be lovely to keep that going next season and lose my 5lb claim for point-to-points and ride a couple of four-yearold winners. We’ll keep trucking away and see how we get on. TOM HARNEY WAS TALKING TO EOGHAIN WARD

O’Neill’s sporting gesture results in title tie
T H E final weekend of the point-to-point season provided an example of magnificent magnanimity from the champion rider Barry O’Neill. After drawing level on 20 winners in the race for the southern region championship he stepped down from his remaining rides so he and James Hannon could share the title. Hannon went into a tense weekend with a lead of three over O’Neill and two over Chris O’Donovan, and after Saturday’s meeting at Dromahane the title race became even more exciting. A double from O’Neill and a winner from O’Donovan meant both trailed Hannon by one going into the season’s final meeting at Tralee. O ’ Ne i l l d re w l e v e l w i t h Hannon after winning a division of the five-year-old geldings’ maiden on Montmartre Abbey after Hannon had pulled up Champagne Sky behind him, and promptly gave up the remainder of his rides on the card. As Hannon had no more rides and O’Donovan failed to partner a winner, it meant O’Neill added the southern title to the eastern and northern regions he had already wrapped up, while also b e i n g c row n e d c ha mp i o n point-to-point rider for the sixth year in a row.

Awesome foursome strike at Stratford
The team of Barry O’Neill,
David Christie and owners Jennifer O’Kane and John Hegarty enjoyed deser ved compensation at Stratford on Friday after a series of narrow defeats in top-level hunter chases in recent months. The quartet secured the final feature races in the British and Irish hunter chase campaign, the John Corbet Cup and the Stratford Foxhunters.
After winning the John Corbet Cup a year earlier, Vaucelet maintained his 100 per cent strike-rate at the course when running down the 2021 winner Law Of Gold in the home straight. That four-length victory for the Authorized gelding, who had lost out to Billaway in the Punchestown champion hunter chase a month earlier,
followed stablemate Ask D’Man’s success in the John Corbet Cup. His success in the £19,000 race had not seemed likely at several stages of the race. However, an exhibition of horsemanship from O’Neill proved key in providing the stable with a second consecutive victory in the race. Christie’s big-race Stratford double was the latest reward for his recruitment policy. This season Christie’s stable has won eight hunter chases with four individual horses, and it is the profile of this quartet which is perhaps most notable. Unlike the stereotypical profile of hunter chasers from previous years, the foursome of W i n g e d L e a d e r, H a n d y Headon, Vaucelet and Ask D’Man were sourced as unexposed individuals, with the latter pair having joined his stable as maidens. Crucially, with the top p e r f o r m e r s Va u c e l e t a n d Winged Leader aged just seven and eight respectively, they have age on their side. This epitomises the changing shape of the hunter-chase division, which has also been evident in many of the category’s leading performers outside his yard, with the likes of Billaway and Aloneamongmillions also having been bought by connections after winning their maiden point-to-points.

MUSKERRY AT DROMAHANE SATURDAY
Kaituna River in the winning flow to help Goff to a special weekend MICK GOFF had a fabulous weekend in saddling three winners and the Moate Stables handler left Dromahane with a double as Kaituna River landed the Tattersalls NH fiveyear-old geldings’ maiden. On an afternoon dominated by Wexford-trained horses, Kaituna River was the only newcomer in the 15-runner contest and the son of Ask was always close to the lead. Sent to the head of affairs two out by Mikey Sweeney, Kaituna River was well in command when closest pursuer Garcon Dargent made an error at the final fence. Tuff Days then came through to deprive Garcon Dargent of the runner-up slot but he was still six lengths adrift of the winner at the line. “ We t o o k h i m t o r u n a t Castletown Geoghegan earlier in the season but he got a cut in the horsebox that day and we couldn’t run him,” Goff said.

Kaituna River, owned by Goff ’s wife Catriona, is an €11,000 foal purchase who is a half-brother to four-time track winning mare Westernerka from the immediate family of Strong Flow and Carrig Millie. Goff was earlier on the mark with Finding Freedom, the mount of Dan Nevin, in the Connolly’s Red Mills four-yearold maiden. While Finding Freedom was having a fourth start, the son of Champs Elysees was beaten only a shade over six lengths in sixth spot by Kinbara on his previous start at Broughshane. He picked up the running
before three out only to be overtaken by Waspy with two fences remaining. Finding Freedom increased his effort gamely from the last to surge back to the front inside the final 50 yards to beat the staying-on Judicial Review by a neck with a half-length back to Waspy in third. “ H e ’s a h o r s e w h o w a s working well but he’s still a bit immature,” Goff said of Finding Freedom, a €16,000 acquisition as a foal who is out of a halfs i s t e r t o G r a d e 2 h u rd l e winning mare Conduct Yourself. “Hats off to Dan, who got a fall in the previous race. That’s Dan’s second winner for me and he will be riding plenty for us again next season.” B a r r y O ’ Ne i l l , w h o h a d ridden Ask D’Man and Vaucelet to victory for David Christie at Stratford the previous evening, was the only rider to record a double on the

The winning nine-year-old moved back into the lead after four out to beat Myrons by a hard-held ten lengths. “We thought he was a good
horse when he was younger but he’s had a few problems,” O’Neill said of Shawshank, who carries the familiar Joncol and Coljon colours of owner Kay Browne. “His jumping was electric today and it’s a shame it was his first start of the year.” O’Neill got off the mark on recent Punchestown debut third Shiroccosmagicgem in the INHSC & Killian Lynch Auctioneers Macroom fouryear-old mares’ maiden. command at the second-last to beat stablemate Barrons Land by two and a half lengths in the c o l ou rs o f ow n e r- b re e d e r Martin Murphy from Bunclody. The Alex Ott-trained Inchidaly Copper continued his meteoric rise through the ranks by landing a vintage renewal of the INHSC winnersof-two under Chris O’Donovan. The ex-hurdler, who had opened his account at Dawstown in early May before adding an Inchydoney winners’ contest to his haul just six days before this latest
success, hardly broke sweat by making all to beat Nice To Meet by a widening ten lengths. “He’s a horse who is very light on his feet and he really travels on the nice ground. I suppose he’ll go back hurdling now,” Andy Burke Ott, son of the winning handler, said. Alex Harvey continued his exemplary season by combining with Willie Murphy to win the QR Association older maiden for novice riders on Grageen. The seasonal debutant, owned and bred by Leo Doyle
from Tomhaggard, surged to the front tw o out and the winning half-brother to Shark Hanlon’s Grade 3-placed mare Dime A Dozen then beat Le Mieux by three lengths. Grageen could now be sold.

Eoin O’Brien only narrowly missed out on securing a treble on Tyner’s runners when Don Carlito lost out to Useitorlooseit in the Dillon Prendiville older geldings’ maiden. The Elusive Pimpernel gelding seemed to lose his way after the turn of the year when pulling up in three consecutive starts, however a close second at Inchydoney seven days previously signalled a return to form.
Pa King excels in the five-yearold mares’ maiden aboard Dame De Fortune to provide Tralee native Cian Collins with a winner
Fachtna Twomey’s sevenyear-old swiftly backed up that performance with a battling ha l f- l e ng t h v i c t o r y u n d e r Robbie Clancy. Visioman enhanced the re put at i o n h e had ca r ve d when lowering the colours of A Rated at Punchestown a fortnight earlier by comfortably doubling up in the Qu i l t e r In s u l at i o n n ov i c e riders’ open. Trainer Ben Halsall had been full of praise for the ride T roy Wa l s h ha d g i ve n h i s charge at the Kildare venue and the 21-year-old Kilkenny native rode the Vision D’Etat gelding with confidence. The pair brushed aside the challenge of Act In Time to win as they pleased by 13 lengths. “He’s a lovely horse for this grade and will run his race
each day he goes out,” Halsall’s representative, Cian Warren, said. “Troy is a really good young rider who is going places. It was a similarly easy victory for Dame De Fortune in the second division of the mares’ maiden as she benefited from a first-class Pa King ride to return unchallenged. The Tipperar y native rounded off his best season with a 27th success thanks to enterprising tactics which took him ten lengths clear e a r l y o n t h e f i n a l c i rc u i t before beating the previously placed Chatshow Host by a distance as just three horses completed. “She seemed to really enjoy making the running and Pa gave her a great ride,” winning handler Cian Collins said. “That’s his first ride for me. We’ll give her a break before heading to the track now.” There was no shortage of drama in division one of the Three Not So Wise Men
– Eamon Courtney, Paudie O’Connor & Ger Houlihan fiveyear-old geldings’ maiden as Fortuitous Find opened his account at the third time of asking. Harley Dunne’s move to the front early on the final circuit meant the Shirocco gelding avoided the drama at the thirdlast fence when three of his rivals departed and it allowed the sales-bound bay to return 17 lengths clear of Soldat Flamboyant. Victory for Barry O’Neill on Montmartre Abbey in the second division means he earns a share of the title in the southern region with James Hannon. The one-and-a-half-length victory for the son of Montmartre over Eoin McCarthy’s Granda George brought O’Neill to the 20-winner mark for the season in the region. Chris O’Donovan was the only one of the three title contenders to miss out on a share of the spoils as his best
place on the day was a second in the Derra Farm Equestrian & Sean Sheehy four-year-old to t h e wa r m f avou r i t e S om e Scope. The Mikey Sweeney-ridden €31,000 purchase was a third winner of the weekend for the Wexford yard of Mick Goff, beating Lazer Wolf by four and a half lengths. “From day one this lad has been a bit special,” Goff said. “He did a lovely piece of work on Tuesday so we were very happy coming here.” There were great scenes of celebration as G one dair y crossed the line in the Roches Feeds mares’ winners-of-three to become the final winner of the season. Th e s i x- ye a r- o l d s w i f t l y followed up her Ballindenisk victor y by outbattling the maiden Caitlin’s Court by a neck under Johnny Berry, with winning handler Denis Prendergast indicating the Lalor family’s homebred would now head to the track.
