EAST DOWN AT TYRELLA SATURDAY

RACEGOERS who were at

Tyrella at the end of January and returned to the Down venue for its fixture on Saturday could have been forgiven a sense of deja vu.

In Ja nu ar y, Ca ro line McCaldin saddled a double with Slievehill and Ballybrittas, and the pair repeated the feat for the Dromara handler

Slievehill was first to strike as the 31- length ma id en winner increased that winning margin to 43 lengths in the Robert McCoubrey Memorial winners-of-two.

As with his maiden victory, Noel McParlan’s mount was allowed to slip the field and although Divilskin closed to within a length at the secondlast the attempt was short-lived

The seven-year-old powered

clear in the straight to justify his odds-on starting price Slievehill ran in the colours of the trainer’s husband, Alan, but it was the silks of her father, Wilson Dennison, that were carried to victory by Ballybrittas in the Tasca Tankers adjacent hunt winners’ race

Taking over from longtime leader Voleur De Terres leaving the back straight, Oran McGill’s mo un t so on ha d vict or y wrapped up and ran out a fourand-a-half-length winner

“I’m thrilled both horses were able to back up their wins here,” McCaldin said.

“Slieve is just phenomenal, altho ugh sli gh tl y ner vewracking to watch He jumped so well today. Ballybrittas is a lovely horse who came from my dad’s and seems to love the better ground around this track. The yard is in great form.”

Li ke Mc Ca ldi n, De re k O’Connor has enjoyed a fine start to 2024, and the 11-time ch am pion ro de his ow n Baldwin The Brave in the Dennison Commercials fouryear-old maiden.

A final-fence faller on his debut, the French-bred son of Kapgarde became a fourth winner in the age group in the last five weeks for his handler when he mastered City Of Diamonds by two and a half lengths He will now go into training with Donald McCain.

CARLOW FARMERS AT BORRIS

CHELTENHAM Gold Cup contender Hewick was the star attraction as he was paraded in front of the crowds before his trainer Shark Hanlon won with stable newcomer Getaway King in the Maureen Mullins Memorial adjacent maiden.

McCaldin sees double with reliable pair Gold Cup hope Hewick on parade as stablemate Getaway King takes off

Pl ace d on his debu t at Dromahane in November when under the ca re of Ellmarie Holden, the grey was subsequently picked up by Hanlon for £23,000, and the six -y ear -ol d ma de an immediate impact for his new connections by repelling the challenge of Carrickfergus by a length and three-quarters

“I liked him at home, but he is still very green,” Hanlon said. “Rob [James] said he ran around the place. When he asked him after jumping the last he just took off “He’ll go for the two-and-ahalf mile bumper at Cork on Easter Monday now.”

Hewick had fallen in the 2019 running of the four-yearold maiden at the beginning of his career, and this year’s Duninga Gallops-sponsored race saw Shuffle The Deck create a favourable impression.

Continuing the excellent start to 2024 for the Derek O’Connor and JP McManus

combination in the division, the McManus homebred was produced by his trainer after the second-last and went on to account for Mondoui’boy by a length and a quarter

“He was in behind them and raced green throughout,” O’Connor said. “So I think what he did today was very special.” Mondoui’boy’s rider, Jack He ndr ic k, la te r wo n the Innovotec mares’ maiden on Full Of Life

That late drama allowed the son of Affinisea, who had ch an ged st ab les be for e finishing fifth at Ballinaboola,

to provide Wexford handler David O’Brien with his first success of the campaign

The final fence had been the undoing of Ocean Brew on her debut at Ballycrystal in January,

out at the penultimate fence, they still collected the prize with Bride Rovers Abu

Just like Tyrella winner Gone With The Tide 24 hours earlier, the Gatewood gelding had finished out of the places at Ballinaboola on his debut last month, but Frankie Murphy guided him to a three-length defeat of Walking On A Dream

“We’re happy with that. He doesn’t really show us a whole lot at home,” Doyle said of her fourth winner in the last three weeks “He ran in Ballinaboola and has come on for that run. All being well, he will head to the sales now.”

Na tiv e So ng sp ra ng a surprise when the outsider of five in the Ward Brothers Recovery and Recycling mares’ winners-of-two was left in front after the third-last-fence fall of My Best Valentine Paul Kiely’s Aghabullogue maiden winner may have been

tiring at the last, but she held on comfortably to beat Lady Mags by five lengths

Lady Mags’s trainer Pat Doyle also had to settle for the runner-up spot in the Connolly’s Red Mills older geldings’ maiden for novice riders when Sir Ollie was second best in a protracted battle with Can Daddy Dance

Johnny Hurley’s six-year-old had twice filled fourth place, including at Ballyvodock on his latest outing, and he stepped forward from that to supply Mike Kenneally with his first success between the flags

“I’m from the Dungourney, the Midleton area and I’m 28 now,” Kenneally said. “I rode on the Flat in England and had three winners there.

“My weight went wrong then and I went away from riding. I’ve only come back recently and things seem to be really working out.”

The €46,000 Arkle sale buy had held the advantage at the

Wexford venue when Harry Swan went out the side door, but the pair outstayed Ian McCarthy’s Annie Don by a neck McCarthy gained compensation in division two of the fiveand six-year-old geldings’ maiden when Our Shane gave the Kildare handler his third winner in eight days.

Owned by his joint-breeder Gary O’Hagan, the Kalanisi gelding had failed to complete at Kirkistown a month ago but Eoin Mahon’s mount enjoyed the better conditions to beat Dark Soldier by two lengths

Hymie Weiss has supplied Eoin Powell with seven of his first eight rides at the start of his career, and the eight-yearold will always hold memories for him after giving him his first success in the INHS Committee older maiden for novice riders.

A first winner in the sphere since November 2021 for Liam Lennon, the Ocovango gelding beat Some Bro by a neck and will now be aimed at a maiden hunter chase.

“I’m delighted. I bought him because I needed a horse to get going. He’s some spin, he just jumps for fun,” Powell said. “I’ll hopefully get a spin round Downpatrick on him now I got my licence upgraded.”

LIMERICK AT BALLYCAHANE SUNDAY Lawless lands first treble

BRIAN LAWLESS was the toast of racegoers at Ballycahane after riding his first treble since he began pointing in 2016.

The former joint under-21 champion, a title he shared with Ben Harvey in the Covid season of 2020, brought his seasonal tally to 11 and his career total to 74.

His first winner on Sunday was Echoing Silence, who delivered on a big home reputation in the John O’Connell Fe ed s and Pa ul Le on ard Construction four-year-old mares’ maiden.

The €28,000 Tattersalls Ireland July store sale purchase came from off the pace and Sam Curling’s charge, led up by owner Correna Bowe, a key member of the Skehanagh stables team, beat Kilbuny Supersonic by four lengths

“This is a very smart filly,” Curling said. “She’s one of our best four-year-olds. Her work has always been very good and she did it really well today. I’m delighted for Correna and her Dad JJ, and I’d say we will sell the filly now.”

It was the Wicklow rider’s chief supporter Matty Flynn O’ Con no r wh o su pplie d Lawless’s other two winners, both impressive newcomers.

CARBERY AT BANDON SUNDAY

JOHNNY HURLEY and Jimmy Mangan were the combination to follow at the 40th anniversary Bandon fixture as the pair recorded a double when Glady Max landed the Faxbridge Veterinary Hospital and Kevin O’Leary Group winners-of-one

A Ballindenisk winner in December, Glady Max was bounced out in front and gave an exhibition of fencing.

The six-year-old, an €80,000 2021 Derby sale graduate, was challenged by Bartlemy Boy on the long approach to the last. Both quickened, but it was clear Glady Max was in command and he went on to beat Bartlemy Boy by three lengths

“Derek O’Connor rode him from off the pace the last day when he fell two out in a winners’ race at Turtulla, although Derek was happy with him at the time,” Mangan said of the Maxios-sired Glady Max, who represents the Any Given Day Syndicate.

“We said we would let him bowl along in front today if there wasn’t much pace The plan now is the hunter chase at Cork on Easter Monday.”

Forest Rock, a runner-up at Ballindenisk and Tallow this year, opened the ManganHurley double in the Glenview.

Star performance

Pierrot Jaguen had victory wrapped up from the penultimate fence as he clocked the quickest time on the card

Jaguen had been bought for €130,000 at the 2022 Derby sale by the Wexford handler in partnership with fellow handler Cormac Doyle and bloodstock agent Hamish Macauley.

Th ei r in ve st me nt wa s rewarded with a six-length defeat of Lost Frequencies in the Blue Door and James Barry Motors five-year-old geldings’ maiden.

“He’s a lovely big horse who has just needed time,” Flynn O’Connor said. “He’s always gone well at home Brian felt he was still pretty babyish though today, and will come on for that experience.”

Rounding off the Lawless treble was The Big Westerner in the Gain Equine Nutrition and Hogan Stand Bar five-yearold-a nd-upwa rd s ma re s’ maiden.

The half-sister to Cheltenham Festival winner Stay Away Fay, who has been flying the flag for Flynn O’Connor’s Ballycrystal stables in recent

seasons, hit the front exiting the back straight

The short-priced favourite Jasmine D’Airy kept her honest up the straight but was again for ce d to se tt le for the runner-up spot after filling the same position at Bellharbour a month ago.

Lawless held hopes of a fourth victory of the afternoon on reigning champion mare La Feline in the Noreen McManus mares’ open, but the odds-on favou ri te, w ho ha d sp lit Lifetime Ambition and Samcro at Bellharbour a month earlier, was no match for Millie B, trailing in 24 lengths adrift

Tom Keating’s Workforce mare powered through the testing conditions under Adam Feeney to record her third success of the season.

“She is an out-and-out stayer who handles that testing ground really well,” Keating said.

“She’ll continue in point-topoints and may now head on to the Gain Mares Final.”

Feeney then had to settle for second on Coffeys Forge as the pair were unable to prevent Lord Desart from gaining a long overdue victory in the Annacotty Farm Shop and Limerick Foods older geldings’ maiden.

Placed in all five previous starts, the six-year-old had been denied by a neck at Bellharb our, but Dan Hyde’s mount was eight lengths too good to give the Trinity College en gineer in g stud en t his seventh pointing success.

“He had been running very well and did it very nicely today,” Hyde said. “I’d say we will look for a winners’ race or maybe even a maiden hunter chase for him.”

Pat Doyle continued his strong start to the 2024 fouryear-old maiden campaign when the Tipperary handler introduced the French-bred In The Age to land the Tattersalls NH and Dunraven Arms Hotel four-year-old geldings’ maiden.

The second son of Saint Des Saints to triumph on the card, with Pierrot Jaguen taking the five-year-old equivalent, Walter Connors’ bay had his task simplified when Gary Murphy’s Eclipse Chaser fell two out.

From there, he was always in command under Pa King, holding the rallying long-time leader Fortune Lad by threequarters of a length “He’s a horse with plenty of pace who’ll probably be better suited to running over shorter distances on the track,” Doyle said.

Glady Max’s front-running show adds gloss to Hurley and Mangan’s day

Star performance

Little Ajay was in a league of his own well before the last to record an impressive debut success

ie six-year-old-and-upwards geldings’ maiden. The Dansant-sired Forest Rock, homebred by Mangan’s wife Mary, also benefited from front-running tactics However, the towering gelding gave his supporters cause for alarm by blundering at the last, then losing momentum. However, he ma na ged to fi gh t off Keeptheoldmanout by half a length with Cold Old Fire third.

“He’s a fine big horse and a real UK-type hunter chaser He’d be a lovely horse for some of the military races,” Mangan said of Forest Rock, whose Ballynoe-based owner Edward Hartnett bought him as a foal.

Johnny Barry was also in

double form with the Conna rider opening his account on the Michael Griffin-trained newcomer Little Ajay, a close relation to Grade 1-placed hurdler-chaser Boychuk, in the Tattersalls NH five-year-old geldings’ maiden.

Th e p air ma de smo oth progress inside the final half mile and took command before the last. With closest pursuer Give Him A Chance unseating there when held in second, Little Ajay beat Potters Voyage by 16½ lengths

“He’s a nice horse who has always worked well and he won a schooling hurdle recently,” Griffin said of the first horse he has trained for Midleton-based Alan Gray

Barry doubled up on Mikey Kennedy’s recent Nenagh ru nner -u p Si mpl y Th e Bestone in the Springmount Stud and Denis and Mary Ryan Car Sales adjacent maiden.

Simply The Bestone, owned and bred by Conor Murphy from whose yard in nearby Up ton ha ndle r Ke nne dy operates, led from the second fence and was in command before the last as he stayed on to beat the only other finisher, No Pains No Gains, by 18 lengths Kennedy’s representative, Jamie Hurley, said a winners’ race could be up next.

River Grainey gained a strange victory in the Bandon Motors and Bandon Co-op five-year-old- and-upwards mares’ maiden under ownertrainer Turlough O’Connor She was travelling best in the lead when refusing at the final fence but, as a similar fate befell her two closest pursuers, River Grainey negotiated the fence at the second attempt to win by 12 lengths from Hero In The Sky, who pulled up at the last before clearing it at the second attempt

Nineteen-year-old Josh Ahern, who is studying history and PE at UCC, partnered his second winner on his father Garrett Ahern’s King Alex in the Chris McCarthy Greenbuild Ltd and Barryroe Co-op novice riders’ open.

By this time nextweek, one dayofthe festival will be behind us.I’m looking forward to the openingday because I’ve beenbooked to ride Corbetts Cross for JP McManusand Emmet Mullinsinthe National Hunt Chase.

It’s always a thrill to ride in a race with such agreat history and I’ve beenlucky enough to winittwice,on ChicagoGreyfor owner John Earls and Gordon Elliottin2011 and on Minella Rocco for JP and Jonjo O’Neillin2016.

It’s also broughtdisappointment on occasions, and morethanthat when Edwulf hadadesperately concerningepisode in the closing stages of the 2017 race wonbyTiger Roll. Happily, he recoveredfully and gave me thebiggest dayofmycareer when winningthe Irish Gold Cupthe following season.
