Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point

Gentlemansgame raises hopes of Cheltenham Gold Cup bid

L

AST Saturday’s Charlie Hall at Wetherby gave us an early taste of the sort of action we can expect in this season’s top staying chases, and it boiled down to a match between two horses who started their racing lives with an Irish point-to-point win. A mistake at the last by the favourite Bravemansgame handed the initiative to the Mouse Morristrained Gentlemansgame, who deserves a lot of credit seeing that he was having only his third race over fences. Of course, he beat the subsequent Irish Grand National winner I Am Maximus by eight lengths at Leopardstown last Christmas and found two and a half miles just a bit sharp when beaten by the vastly experienced Easy Game at Gowran in September. He has looked a smart horse since the beginning, winning a maiden at Curraghmore for Donnchadh Doyle on the last day of October three years ago. He’s developing into a Cheltenham Gold Cup prospect for his trainer, who loves nothing more than having a top staying chaser on his hands. I often think we all owe Mouse a big debt of gratitude because of what he achieved with a horse who fell on his only point-to-point start. That was War Of Attrition, the horse who really kickstarted Michael O’Leary’s massive investment in the Gigginstown operation which has had a big part in developing the market for point-to-pointers. Bravemansgame, last year’s King George winner and Cheltenham Gold Cup second, was giving 6lb to the winner and I’m sure we’ll see him in peak form at Kempton. He is another of Donnchadh Doyle’s graduates and was a winner at Lingstown in March 2019.

Boy, he looks promising

Enough of looking back. In this business, you’re always trying to look to the future, and on Sunday I enjoyed riding promising youngster Quantum Boy, a half-brother to Bravemansgame, to win the opening four-year-old maiden at Damma House for Jonathan Fogarty and the Gaynestown Stud partnership. He quickened as soon as I sent him

to the front three out and we were a long way clear between the last two. I was able to ease him down and the winning margin was still huge. His sire, Diamond Boy, has had a winner at the last two Cheltenham festivals, L’Homme Presse in the Brown Advisory Chase in 2022 and Impaire Et Passe in last season’s Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle. It’s early days but he’s certainly doing things right so far.

‘I often think we all owe Mouse a big debt of gratitude because of what he achieved with a horse who fell on his only point-topoint start’

It was a good weekend for the Fogarty team who took the second division of the four-year-old maiden at Lisronagh on Saturday with McLaurey, a newcomer ridden by Barry Stone. This time I had a rear view, riding one of our own horses, Rockvale. A son of Jukebox Jury, McLaurey is a promising type, as is Wade Out, who beat the Fogarty runner Diagon Alley in the first division. Another winner for Dara McGill, who I mentioned last week as having made a flying start to the season, he’s owned and trained by Tom Keating and is by Shantou out of a halfsister to Dedigout, a talented horse for Tony Martin. I rode the Ellmarie Holden-trained Ilfu Un Mome to make a winning debut in the five-year-old geldings maiden at Lisronagh. We were left clear after Jimmy Mangan’s Benjis

Benefit, a horse with a fair amount of track experience, fell when giving chase at the last.

La Feline purrs to another win

La Feline, last season’s champion mare, repeated last year’s win in the mares’ open. Sam Curling had her in great order for the start of the campaign and she has another big season in front of her. She’s only eight and has won ten of her 21 starts in points, along with seven seconds and four third places. Its On The Line, winner of the Champion Hunter Chase at the Punchestown festival, reappeared in the open at Damma House having his first run since Ballindenisk in May. Maxine O’Sullivan and I shared the rides on him last season, and this time it was Maxine aboard to enjoy a hard-fought success from Jeremy Pass, who I rode for Sam Curling. It was a good, tough performance by the six-year-old. You would imagine that his main aim for the

season will be to go one better than when runner-up to Premier Magic in the Hunters’ Chase at Cheltenham. Maxine is now off the mark on only her second ride of the season and I’m sure she’ll make a determined bid to retain the lady riders’ title. Jeremy Pass started off with Mick Goff. He won a hurdle and a chase for Paul Nicholls and is an eightyear-old who hasn’t done a huge amount of racing. He put in a lively display on his first run since finishing third in a handicap chase at Kempton in February. The winner, Killer Kane, who began his career with a Belclare win for Donnchadh Doyle, was later third in the Topham, so the form looks solid. All in all, it was a successful weekend, two ex-pointers dominating the Charlie Hall, a halfbrother to one of them giving just one of several noteworthy performances in the four-year-old division, and both Its On The Line and La Feline back with a win. You couldn’t ask for much more.

IN FOCUS Pandora Briselden (below) reflects on her month of first-time achievements

O

CTOBER was quite a month. I rode my first winner aboard You No Me Too Well at Tinahely and then I ran my first marathon in the Dublin Marathon. I wouldn’t say I was expecting You No Me Too Well to win in Tinahely and I don’t think anyone else did either. She is very honest though and I knew she would like the ground and track so I did think if she was going to run well it would be there. It just depended on how everyone else was going to run. She felt unbelievable on the day, she gave me a fantastic spin and she did it pretty easily in the end. I ride out a couple of mornings a week for her trainer, Aidan ‘Scobie’ Fitzgerald, and he’s been very good to me. Ten months ago I was looking for somewhere to ride out and he rang and asked me if I wanted to come down

‘I didn’t know how long a marathon was before I ran it – I was Googling halfway round to check’ to his stables in Borris for a morning to see how I found it. I went down, loved it and have been going there ever since. It’s such a nice yard to be in, everyone is so nice and Scobie is great for helping people. He’s great at teaching and giving everyone a chance. He’s fantastic at giving everyone opportunities - and it is hard to get them - so it has been great to find someone like him. I’d completed my last long run before the marathon at the Curragh on the Saturday evening before Tinahely. When I went to put my irons up on

Sunday the legs were feeling stiff so I had to ride a little longer than usual. The miles the night before certainly took its toll - I was in bits! Apart from horses, running is my biggest hobby and I’m quite competitive so it’s nice to have something to aim at and try to improve at rather than running aimlessly.

A marathon was the obvious first target to go for. I’m in college in Dublin, so it was nice to have my friends around giving me support. I really enjoyed the first two-thirds of the marathon and then it was definitely more of a mental struggle than a physical one. The legs were a bit sore but it was more the

torture of seeing the mile markers as it felt they were just so far apart. It sounds ridiculous but I actually didn’t know how long a marathon was before I ran it. I’d thought it was 21 miles and it turns out it’s 26 miles, obviously. I was actually Googling halfway around to check how long it was in miles. It was a nasty shock to find out it’s as long as it is but I’m glad I’ve done it and I’m looking forward to doing another one. I’d told Aidan I would be in work the following day and a few people said that was

NEWS AND VIEWS

ridiculous, but I said ‘no, I’ll be fine’, and then the first thing I did when I pulled up at the end of the race was to text him and tell him I’d be a nonrunner for work in the morning. There wasn’t a chance I’d have been able to get up on a horse, but I was back on the Tuesday morning. I’m in my final year of college and I wouldn’t say I’m the best student. I’m living in Kildare now but I was living in Dublin for the last three years and it made no sense to be driving out of Dublin every day to ride out. I convinced myself I would commute into college but that has not really been happening. I’m in my final year of Spanish and Arabic at Trinity. I’m not sure how helpful Spanish will be with racing but the logic behind picking Arabic was because of the Middle East and bloodstock and hopefully that might open a few doors for me in the industry. I’d love to give racing a go but it’s very tough to make a career out of it. I would like to improve and see If I can get the ball rolling but then, being realistic, I will have the degree and a couple of other things I’d also like to pursue. Kirkistown falls victim to the storms HEALY RACING

THE wet spell has claimed its second victim as the North Down Foxhounds fixture at Kirkistown scheduled for this Saturday has had to be cancelled. Th e A rd s Pe n i n su la ha s been badly affected by the recent storms and an inspection of the track last Friday found it to be waterlogged. The loss of Kirkistown follows on the heels of the cancellation of last Sunday’s fixture at Rathcannon. If an alternative date cannot be found for the North Down fixture it would leave a 13-week gap in the northern region schedule from Moira’s card on October 28 to Tyrella on January 27.

Death of prolific winner Some Are Lucky

The weekend’s results brought timely successes for Sam Curling and Corinthian rider Gerry Spain after the death of their open lightweight stalwart Some Are Lucky on Friday. The Skehanagh Stables team on Friday announced the death of the 12-year-old who made his return to action at CastletownGeoghegan a month earlier for his 63rd career start. Having begun his career in three four-year-old maidens for Brian Hamilton, the Gold Well gelding spent time with Tom George prior to joining Curling, for whom he won seven of his

first eight starts in the open division, and took Spain, a pharmacist by trade, to ride at the 2021 Cheltenham Festival. In all, Some Are Lucky won

12 open lightweight races, including two wide-margin successes last season, and proved to be a particularly fine h o rs e f o r h i s ow n e r- r i d e r

across the past five years, supplying him with ten of his 15 wins in the pointing fields. Spain did enjoy a timely opening success of the season

at Damma House on Sunday on Eddie Power’s Shiroccosmagicgem, while the Curling team won the mares’ open at Lisronagh with La Feline.

Charlie Hall proves a mansgame for Doyle

The seven-day postponement o f the G ra d e 1 La db ro kes Champion Chase at Down Royal left last Saturday’s bet365 Charlie Hall Chase as the first ra c e o f t h e s e a s o n i n t h e staying chase division for potential Gold Cup contenders. The Wetherby result proved particularly good for D o n n c ha d h D oyle’s ex-pointers as the Grade 2 contest was fought out by two of his former inmates, with Gentlemansgame getting the better of last season’s Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up Bravemansgame. Gentlemansgame had won on his only outing for Doyle in a Curraghmore four-year-old maiden three years earlier. In that victory he got the better of Balco Coastal, trained by Doyle’s elder brother Sean, and that son of Coastal Path ha s g o n e o n t o b e c o m e a 149-rated chaser with a Grade 1 placing to his name. Buoyed by that result, Doyle should be a stronger presence in the younger age maiden division in the coming period, having again bided his time in the early weeks of the season. With 17 of his four-year-olds featuring on last week’s list of hunter certificates an imminent gear change for the Monbeg team looks likely.

WEEKEND REPORTS

TIPPERARY AT LISRONAGH SATURDAY

‘That was brilliant’ – champion mare La Feline opens season in style L A FELINE made a perfect start to her defence of the c h a m p i o n m a re s’ t i t l e by landing the Marine Nationale mares’ open for the second year in a row. As had been the case 12 months ago, Derek O’Connor was full of confidence aboard the John O’Leary-owned La Feline, a daughter of Martaline, but this year the performance was arguably even more impressive as she dismissed recent Umma House scorer Maid On The Moon in decisive fashion by 15 lengths. “That was brilliant ; Derek said she never felt better so hopefully she will have another good year,” winning handler Sam Curling said. “I won’t run her as much this year. I probably ran her too many times last year and I’ll keep her against mares.” O’Connor had initiated his second double of the season when continuing his fruitful ass ociation w ith E llmar ie Ho l d e n t ha n ks t o Ilfu Un Mome in the Hotel Minella & Tattersalls NH five-year-old geldings’ maiden.

Star performance

Youhadmeathello proved her ground versatility

The Kilkenny handler had not saddled a runner in the pointing sphere since another French-bred, Intrepide Sivola, scored at the Tipperary venue in February, and when the 91-rated hurdler Benjis Benefit came down at the last when challenging, Ilfu Un Mome was allowed to return 15 lengths ahead of Soldier Of Rock. Another to score by a considerable margin was Beau’s Candle, who came home 14 lengths clear in the Maher Auctioneers & INHSC older maiden. Second to Lecale Way on his return to this sphere on the opening day of the season, the Dylan Phelan-ridden eightyear-old became the fourth maiden winner to emerge from that Castletown-Geoghegan contest with his comfortable defeat of Miners Bridge. He is now likely to be aimed at a winners-of-one. Tom Keating has called on

the services of reigning u n d e r- 2 1 c h a m p i o n D a ra McGill only three times previously but the pair recorded their second success together when the Derry native steered Wade Out to a two-and-a-half length victory in division one of the Sladdagh Farms four-yearold geldings’ maiden. A brother to the dual winning hurdler Whatsupwithou, the Shantou gelding held off Jonathan Fogarty’s newcomer Diagon Alley and is now for sale. Fogarty was again in the number two spot after the Coral Gold Cup Sale by Goffs four-year-old mares’ maiden, when Visual Impact found the Pa King-ridden Stowlin runner-up Youhadmeathello two and a half lengths too good. “She is very good. We took a chance running her at Stowlin but we didn’t have her fit enough as she had a little time off before that,” handler Pat D oyle sai d . “She pul l e d a muscle and we thought we’d get her to win before being sold. It was the wrong thing to do.

Pictures: HEALY RACING

Fogarty did gain deserved compensation when Mclaurey made the perfect start to his career under Barry Stone in division two of the four-yearold maiden. A €55,000 purchase at last year’s Tattersalls Ireland Derby sale, the Jukebox Jury gelding took control from the penultimate fence to defeat Rockvale by eight lengths. “I’m delighted. He’s a very smart horse who is by a good sire and hopefully he has a bright future,” Fogarty said of the sales-bound bay. Conna rider John Barry was seen to good effect on the Benny Crowley-trained Slotty

Dotty, as the Court Cave mare supplied him with his opening success of the season in the Gain Equine Nutrition and Tim Bourke & Associates five-yearold mares’ maiden. Patiently delivered, the Good Ghandi Gang-owned bay pounced late to pick off the form horse of the race An Cailin Ciuin, as the pair pulled 30 lengths clear of their rivals. “She’s the first horse the syndicate have had and was bred by Martin Kiely in Woodstown, County Waterford. “I recommended her to the syndicate a year ago and they bought her,” Crowley said.

KILKENNY AT DAMMA HOUSE SUNDAY

Debutant Quantum Boy makes light work of the four-year-old maiden under Derek O’Connor to continue Jonathan Fogarty’s impressive form in four-year-old races

‘All roads lead back to Cheltenham’ – Mullins lays plan on the line ITS ON THE LINE was the country’s top hunter chaser last season and the Punchestown festival winner made a successful return to action in the Ballyreddin Stud, Joey Logan Bloodstock & Grangeclare Stud open. Moving to the front at the fourth-last fence under Maxine O’Sullivan, his winning return had looked assured going to the final fence, but the challengers began to close on the run-in and the Emmet Mullinstrained six-year-old had only half a length to spare at the line over Jeremy Pass. “That’s a great start to the season for him to get off on a winning note,” Mullins said. “All roads lead back to Cheltenham. He can improve as he is still a young horse and is clearly going the right way. He’s not simple; he doesn’t make life easy for himself as he can run around a bit.” Jonathan Fogarty capped a weekend to remember when his newcomer Quantum Boy justified market support in the Tattersalls NH & Gain Equine Nu t r i t i o n f o u r- y e a r- o l d maiden. Twenty-four hours earlier the Wexford handler had sent out a winner and two seconds across the three races for fouryear-olds at Lisronagh, and his stable’s strong form in the age division was enhanced by the

victory of Quantum Boy, a €85,000 Derby sale purchase. Moving to the front three from home, Derek O’Connor’s mount, a half-brother to the Charlie Hall Chase runner-up Bravemansgame, was soon in a league of his own as he went on

to inflict a 40-length defeat on Ailt An Chorrain. “He did what we thought he’d do; he’s a very exciting horse for the future,” Fogarty said. “Derek loved him. He said he was going easily and he j u m p e d w e l l . We ’ r e j u s t relieved and thrilled.” Fellow Wexford handler Sean Doyle was also responsible for an impressive winner as Roe And Co, owned by the trainer’s you ng er brother G earoid,

made amends for a luckless mishap at Loughrea in the Ballylinch Stud five-year-old geldings’ maiden. Carried out by a loose horse when in front on his debut at the Galway venue a month ago, there were no such misfortunes at the second time of asking as he forced Turlough O’Connor’s Oscars Brother into the runner-up spot for a third time with a two-and-a-half-length victory.

Unusually, the winners-oftwo brought out the biggest field of the day with 13 runners facing the starter in the MJ Equestrian-sponsored event. The race also produced the biggest-priced winner on the card when Shiroccos magicgem struck at 10-1. A f o u r- y e a r- o l d m a r e s ’ maiden winner 16 months earlier when under the care of Colin Bowe, the Liam Clearyowned five-year-old returned

from a fruitless spell in bumpers to defeat the Bowetrained Wallace Olinger by five lengths. Tipperar y handler Eddie Power was pleased to supply Gerry Spain with his opening w inner of the s eas on and indicated that Shiropcosmagicgem would stay in winners’ company before being aimed at a mares’ hunter chase. Wallace Olinger’s rider Barry O’Neill had to settle for second place again in the John Joseph Hanlon older geldings’ maiden when Casey West found Declan Queally’s Don’t Matter Now six lengths too strong. T h e e i g h t- y e a r- o l d w a s having his first start for Queally’s Waterford stable on his return from a two-and-ahalf-year absence and, after being guided to victory by the handler’s son and namesake, a winners-of-one was said to be next on his agenda. Three-horse handler David Walsh supplied a popular local winner of the Mount Juliet Estate mares’ maiden as Lucky Venture made all under Byron Tully to beat Amyr by three lengths. “The plan wasn’t really to make all . . . there was no plan,” Walsh said. “She’s a good stayer, and she seems to settle and jump better when she’s in front. She’s a much stronger, more mature mare this season.”
