War Call’s win a fine tribute to the life of Dillon Quirke I T WAS good to be among the winners at the weekend and there was a nice bit of variety involved. Of the four winners I rode, two were promising newcomers, a four-year-old and a five-year-old, another was a lovely consistent mare in an open race, and then there was War Call, a six-year-old maiden with track experience. War Call’s win at Lisronagh gave me a lot of pleasure, although like everyone else involved with the horse, the occasion was mixed with sadness. The Sam Curling-trained Martaline gelding carries the colours of a syndicate put together to honour the memory of Dillon Quirke, the brilliant young Tipperary hurler whose sudden death in August came as a terrible shock to his family and friends and to sports fans far and wide. Dillon was playing for his club Clonoulty-Rossmore when he collapsed on the pitch at Semple Stadium in Thurles. He was a gifted and very popular player who won All-Ireland minor honours before graduating to the senior Tipperary team. Many of Dillon’s friends are involved with the DQ11 Syndicate which is leasing the former Dan Skelton-trained War Call. He jumped really well and I hope he can continue to provide the syndicate with some joy as a tribute to Dillon’s life and sporting career so tragically cut short. War Call gave Sam a double on the card. He produced La Feline in good shape to win the mares’ open on her seasonal debut, beating the Colin Bowe-trained Fort Worth Texas, who had the benefit of a run at Ballycrystal a few weeks earlier. It was my fourth win on the mare, a dependable performer, never out of the first three in 12 starts in points. Sam also won the open at Rathcannon with Some Are Lucky, a great servant to owner Gerry Spain, who had ridden him to nine of his previous ten wins in points. The exception was when Susie Doyle was aboard at Rathcannon in April on her way to winning the lady riders’ title. This time he had another woman on board, Toni Quail. She got him

Paul Crowley won the Grade 1 bumper at Punchestown on her and she became a top-class hurdler who won the Royal Bond and the big twomile hurdle at Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting. It’s a fabulous dam line. Killaney King should be another good advertisement for the family.
Friday’s Cheltenham sale
The updated catalogue for the Tattersalls Cheltenham Sale on Friday has 63 point-to-pointers and horses-in-training. I’ve picked out three recent maiden winners who should attract plenty of interest.
Lot 8 Mahon’s Way
I rode this Walk In The Park gelding at Lisronagh last Saturday. I liked him a lot and he has a pedigree to match the promise he has shown. The name that stands out is Champagne Fever, one of three winners produced by his unraced second dam. He won a maiden point at Quakerstown, was an outstanding bumper horse and novice hurdler, and later a top chaser.
Lot 15 Ballyburn
La Feline provides the first of Sam Curling’s double in the mares’ open at Lisronagh
into a good jumping rhythm in front and had everything under control all the way. The Gold Well gelding went a long way clear in the closing stages. This was only her second point-topoint win but she isn’t short of experience. She comes from Downpatrick and represented Ireland at the European Junior
‘If Toni Quail gets enough opportunities in opens she could make a serious challenge for the lady riders’ title’
Eventing Championships, has ridden the winner of an Event Riders’ Challenge race at Dundalk and partnered two winners on the track for Colin Bowe last season, in a maiden hurdle at Sligo and a bumper at Bellewstown. If she gets enough opportunities in opens she could make a serious challenge for the lady riders’ title.
Newcomers make good impression
With the season well under way, we were treated to some good performances by youngsters at the weekend. I enjoyed a comfortable win on Mahon’s Way for Denis Hogan in the four-year-old maiden at Lisronagh, and it was also fairly straightforward for the five-year-old
Feronily, a Getaway gelding who gave Ellmarie Holden her first win of the season at Rathcannon. I rode Scandis Park for Ellmarie in the four-year-old maiden. He was sent off favourite and showed plenty of promise, but we had to settle for third behind Killaney King, a Pat Doyle-trained Flemensfirth gelding who has the makings of a high-class horse for the track. He has a lovely and very familiar pedigree. His dam Liss Na Tintri was a bumper winner for John Kiely and was also second in the Listed bumper at the Grand National meeting at Aintree, beaten by her stablemate Candy Creek. Liss Na Tintri was a daughter of Liss Na Paoraigh, one of the best racemares around at the time when I was starting my career and was learning a lot through riding for the Kiely stable.
A Flemensfirth gelding who impressed when recovering from interference at the second-last to win on his debut at Loughanmore for the powerful Wilson Dennison-Colin McKeever operation. He’s a brother to five winners, including two talented staying handicap chasers, Noble Endeavor, who won the Paddy Power at Leopardstown for Gordon Elliott, and Minella Daddy, winner of five races for Peter Bowen. He was bought by Ian Ferguson as a foal for €80,000 and has always been held in high regard.
Lot 33 Working Away
This Workforce filly from the Denis Murphy stable created a strong impression when winning a mares’ maiden at Tattersalls Farm, recording a fast time which compared favourably with that clocked by the talented open horse Brain Power on the same afternoon. Her dam won a bumper and is noteworthy as a sister to Grangeclare Lark, a talented mare over hurdles. She’s a half-sister to Scarthy Lad, a good hurdler-chaser for Tom O’Leary.

IN FOCUS Darragh Higgins, 20, reveals a move to Wexford has brought plenty of new opportunities
I
T’S been a serious start to the season this year with three winners from my first three rides. I’m from Ballymacoda in Cork but I’ve moved to Wexford this season. I’m very good friends with Brian Dunleavy and last season he made the move to team up with Ellen and James Doyle. During the summer, I wasn’t overly busy at home and they had bought plenty of horses, so I started going over and back with Brian – breaking horses, lunging and riding, and they asked if I would stay on a few days when they were starting to bring more horses back in. Wexford is the only place to be to get opportunities. Ellen and James alone have 80 horses in and there are plenty of opportunities, whereas to find 80 horses around home you would be going to five or six different yards. They are very nice people to work for too. It’s great craic but everything is done properly and I was very grateful to them for giving me my first winner at Toomebridge with Haddock De Grissay on the opening day of the season. It was unreal to get the opportunity to ride the horse and get my first win on my first

ride in a point-to-point for them. I had ridden in a bumper for them during the summer but it was great to get a chance for them in a pointto-point and for it to come off so well. I was delighted to be honest.
There were no big celebrations afterwards, mind you, because I had to travel five and a half hours home to milk cows on Sunday morning! Growing up I always had an interest in ponies, and I started riding out with Colin
Motherway when I was in third year. I would have been going into him every weekend and then the odd day during the week if he had schooling on to gain a bit more experience. From the point I started
riding out it was probably always an idea that I had to go race riding. I asked Colin what he thought and he told me that I should go for it and see how I got on. He was brilliant to learn from and taught me plenty, which has stood to me. Even up in Toomebridge, I had never been up there before my winner last month and it’s a place where you would want to be using your brain, but I have had plenty of tutoring from Colin and he had it fairly well drilled into me not to be going too quick in races, so I always have that in the back of my mind. I was lucky enough to ride my first two four-year-old maiden winners on the one weekend for Michael Murphy with Ask Anything at Loughbrickland and Law Of Supply at Tattersalls. I am living in Wexford with Brian Dunleavy and Mikey
NEWS AND VIEWS
Sweeney, and myself and Mikey go into Michael’s yard every afternoon. When Mikey had his fall and picked up a slight injury I said I may take my opportunity, and it paid off. Going into the weekend we knew they would both be fit, the horses had been going well and had plenty of schooling, so we did feel like we were going there with a good shot at it on both days. But to get my first two four-year-old winners on the one weekend from two rides was brilliant. At Loughbrickland we went a good old gallop, so I was happy to sit in behind Dan Nevin and tip away. Turning out going down the hill I was happy to let him roll on as he jumped like a buck, but when I asked him a question he was very good to be fair and galloped right to the line. It was a hot race at Tattersalls. A lot of people seemed to fancy their horse going into the race, so we were up against it, but turning into the straight he really put his head down and galloped up the hill. After I had finished school I went to Kildalton Agricultural College to do the Green Cert for two years, so I wasn’t able to fully commit full-time to racing. I finished in Kildalton last May, so this is my first season going full-time with the racing and I’m looking forward to it, trying to gain as many contacts as I can to get more rides and experience to help improve all the time. Strength of La Feline’s opposition bodes well THE Sam Curling-trained La Feline enjoyed a perfect start to the defence of her champion point-to-point mares’ title with a comfortable victory on her return to action at Lisronagh on Saturday. The seven-year-old’s threeand-a-half-length success came in the first mares’ open of the season and, encouragingly, she had to beat ten rivals to do so as the race produced one of the biggest fields across the weekend’s three fixtures. Mares’ opens have largely struggled to produce competitive fields so far this year. The state of the division was laid b a re w h e n S a m Cu r l i n g ’s Martaline mare beat just one rival at L oughanmore last Easter, and that rival hadn’t won since a sole success in the pointing fields in 2019. In contrast, Saturday’s race saw all 11 entrants stand their ground on raceday. It starts the division on an encouraging note this season and it is hoped it will continue into the next mares’ open pencilled in for Corbeagh House on Sunday December 4.

Irish pointers dominate Friday’s Cheltenham sale
When Envoi Allen bounced back to his best form in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal on Saturday with his seventh Grade 1 victory it was the fourth time in the last six runnings that the opening Grade 1 of the season was won by a point-to-point graduate. The Muhtathir gelding had been bought for £400,000 by To m Ma l o n e o n b e ha l f o f Cheveley Park Stud at the Cheltenham sales in February 2018, a n d a c t i o n re t u r n s t o t h e Tattersalls sales ring for the first time this season on Friday with their November sale. The 63-strong catalogue was confirmed on Monday after the addition of wildcards from last w e e kend’s ac t ion as I r i s h point-to-pointers dominate the catalogue, accounting for a total of 53 lots. The value the market has placed on horses with Irish point-to-point form in recent seasons has rocketed, with last s e a s o n ’s s p e n d a t p u b l i c auction totalling more than €39.6 million. It is a measure of
ridden a hunter chase winner on Doyle’s Myrons at Tramore in 2019. After riding 11 winners in this sphere, and ending last season at Ballingarry, he joins an everlengthening list of riders who have progressed to the track in recent seasons having benefited from a foundation in race-riding in pointing.
Quakerstown given replacement fixture
Envoi Allen lands the Ladbrokes Champion Chase to enhance the reputation of ex-point-to-pointers
how significantly the auction has grown, having never previously broken the €30 million barrier for a single season. After interrupted seasons in the two years preceding it, the €39.6 million total marked a 55 per cent increase to the spend on pointers at public sales in the three years since the last
full season took place in 2019. Owners and handlers will be hoping Friday’s sale sets a similar tone for the season ahead.
Dwan makes splash on the track with Waves
Evan Dwan became the latest former point-to-point rider to
start his new career in the professional ranks successfully when he steered Julie Cashin’s Navy Waves to a 33-1 success in a maiden hurdle at Thurles last Thursday. The Cashel rider was largely associated with local Tipperary yards such as Pat Doyle and S a m Cu r l i n g , h av i n g a l s o
After the cancellation of the Kilmoganny Foxhounds fixture a t Ma i n s t o w n o n S u n d a y December 4, the Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Committee has confirmed that a replacement fixture has been added to the fixture list for the same day at Quakerstown. The County Clare venue draws a sizeable crowd to its traditional Easter Sunday fixture and it will inherit the same six-race programme which had been scheduled for Mainstown. This now means the third and final ladies’ open of the pre-Christmas term has been salvaged.

WEEKEND REPORTS
TIPPERARY AT LISRONAGH SATURDAY
Mahon’s Way spearheads O’Connor treble DEREK O’CONNOR rode a treble at Lisronagh to bang out an ‘I’m still around’ message to runaway leader and reigning champion Barry O’Neill. It took 11-time champion O’Connor on to six winners for the season – a seventh came at Rathcannon the following day – and moved him into second p l a c e i n t h e r i d e r s’ t a b l e behind O’Neill, who had a treble of his own at Damma House on Sunday. A good jump at the secondlast ensured Mahon’s Way was always in the driving seat as he powered clear to beat Bugise Seagull by four lengths, the pair returning eight lengths clear of the only other finisher, Old Time Chaser. “I loved him since the day I saw him at the Derby sale. O’Connor’s two other winners were supplied by Sam Curling, the pair initially combining to collect the Caharclough Tarmacadam mares’ open with last season’s champion mare La Feline. Making her return to the fray, La Feline edged closer from four out and took command at the second-last to beat fellow track winner Fort Worth Texas by a comprehensive three and a half lengths. The recent Curragh student d e r b y r u n n e r- u p W i n n i e Woodnutt secured the minor
honours, an additional 14 lengths adrift of the winning French-bred seven-year-old who spor ts the colours of Corkonian John O’Leary. “She’s a classy mare and Derek was delighted with her,” Curling said. La Feline was good enough to finish mid-division in the 2020 Grade 2 mares’ novice hurdle at Cheltenham when trained by Paul Nolan. “She can get lit up and Toni Quail and Correna Bowe do a
great job riding her out at home. She will probably now run in the mares’ open at Corbeagh House.” Curling and O’Connor signed off with former British track performer War Call, who hardly broke sweat in making a triumphant points debut in the Boomerang.ie & INHSC older maiden, which came with a €1,500 bonus. War Call, an eye-filling grey who finished fourth in a two-mile Worcester novice
hurdle in October 2021 for Dan Skelton, made all the running and the foot-perfect six-yearold was in command from two out as he coasted clear to beat Loughanmore runner-up Gray Rock by nine and a half lengths. This victory was tinged with sadness, however, as War Call is leased by the DQ11 Syndicate, which was formed in memory of the late Tipperary senior hurler Dillon Quirke, who died earlier this year aged just 24, having played his club hurling

Samcro coasts to stunning success SA M C RO, winner of three Grade 1 races and almost £350,000 prize-money under rules, continues to forge a new career between the flags. After trouncing his rivals by 32 lengths in a Tinahely open in mid-October, Samcro more than doubled his winning distance in the Connollys Red Mills open as he coasted to a stunning victory. “We’ll have a bit of fun with him,” trainer Gordon Elliott said with huge understatement. “Maybe he could go to Down Royal on St Stephen’s Day, but he’ll stay pointing for the time being, and it’s great to see him enjoying himself.” Left trailing in his wake was Brooksway Fair, easy winner of an open at Umma House two weeks earlier, on an afternoon that attracted only 32 runners. The Shantou-sired Lake Road, bought as a foal by
w inner ’s enclosure as the unrelated Paul O’Neill secured his first success of the season when teaming up with fellow Clare native Cormac Flannery as they produced Shadows In The Sky to take the Gowran Park Racecourse & Golf Course older geldings’ maiden. Unfortunate to come a cropper at the final fence on his debut at Boulta, the John and Jamie O’Brien-bred Arcadio gelding had to overcome an absence of almost a year, but with his connections managing to find another small-field opportunity for him, there was no repeat of his final-fence drama as he eased to a 35-length defeat of Gainstown. The tw ice placed Ballyrashane faced just one rival in a disappointing turnout for the Hunting Horn at Castlefield Stud five-year-old geldings’ maiden, and put that experience to good use. Cormac Abernethy sent the Wilson Dennison-owned Milan gelding clear of Nevermindestranger in the straight and he was not for catching as he comfortably dismissed that rival’s challenge for a tenlength victory. “He had the experience and

It’s likely that Lake Road, whose three-time winning dam Caheronaun was placed in a Grade 2 novice hurdle, will now be sold. The Peter Croke-trained West Of Carrig stepped forward from his fifth-placed return effort at Loughanmore two weeks earlier by landing the Hotel Minella five-year-old geldings’ maiden under Brian Lawless. West Of Carrig, a son of Westener, was always on the pace and he dominated from two out to beat The Guinea Hu nt e r by t w o a n d a ha l f lengths. “He was a bit keen in Loughanmore, but he still ran a nice race there. He’ll now go to the Cheltenham sales,” Croke said. The afternoon’s closest finish came in the Gain Equine Nutrition & Tim Bourke & Associates five-year-old mares’ maiden as Meet My Loreley made her way past Ambush Annie in the closing stages under her owner-trainer Hugh Finegan’s 18-year-old nephew Eoghan Finegan to score by a head. Te a m i n g u p a g a i n w i t h Oulart handler Ellen Doyle, he was reunited with the Malinas gelding for the first time since falling at the final fence on his debut at Quakerstown last Easter, and they made amends this time by getting the better of Rob James’s Ballycahane third Sovereign Star by three lengths. Killaney King trounces rivals as debut win earns place in Cheltenham sale
THE Pat Doyle-trained newcomer Killaney King lit up the Bruff meeting by annihilating the opposition in the Tattersalls NH four-year-old maiden. Killaney King was sent through to dispute the running from half way with Quornofamonday until he edged into a narrow advantage from after three out. Scandisk Park held every chance approaching two out, but he was soon beaten as the winning son of Flemensfirth asserted after the penultimate fence to beat Quornofamonday by 12 lengths. Scandisk Park was a further one-length away in third. In the absence of handler Doyle, his wife Mary noted that Killaney King, who carries her silks but in whom Gavin Fitzsimons and Ivor McGrath from County Down also hold an i nt e re s t, ha s a l way s b e e n considered a nice horse and that he won well. Killaney King, a €90,000 acquisition as a foal is a halfbrother to two black-type ma re s, i n c l u d i ng G ra d e 3 novice hurdle winner Just Janice, was quickly added to this Friday’s Tattersalls sale after racing at Cheltenham. The pair opened their account with Three Nations in the O’Flynn’s Centra Bruff six-year-old-andupwards geldings’ maiden. Three Nations, placed twice in points when under the care of Tom Keating, was bounced out smartly into a lovely rhythm in front. From four out it was clear he had too much speed for his two

I’d imagine he’ll go for a winners’ race if not sold.” R o c k y ’s H o w y a , w h o impressed when losing his maiden tag at Ballycrystal two weeks earlier, completed the Queally-Donovan double in the Paul Leonard Construction winners-of-three. R o c k y ’s H o w y a a l s o benefited from front-running tactics and, although blundering three out and again at the last, the former 111-rated track performer was in command on the flat as he drew some six lengths clear of Clonmeen. “He runs away in these type of races and, hopefully, he’ll win a few more,” O’Donovan said of Margaret Kiely’s winner. “Declan’s horses are in great form at the moment.” Ellemarie Holden, having sent out Scandisk Park to finish third in the four-year-old maiden, kept her supporters happy by saddling Feronily to make a winning debut in the C larke’s Bar five-year-old geldings’ maiden. ENTRIES have a reference number to the horse’s last run, form figures (latest on right), owner, handler and exclusive rating (same scale as rules RPR). For penalised horses we suggest deducting half a point per pound (penalties not confirmed until race-day). Irish point-to-point entries are ordered as follows: 1 Horses whose owner has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) owner, (b) horse. 2 Horses whose handler has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) handler, (b) horse. 3 Remaining horses, ordered alphabetically. Abbreviations: B-brought down; b-baulked; C-carried out; d-disqualified; F-fell; P-pulled up; R-ran out; r-refused; S-slipped up; U-unseated rider.
