Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point
The Tyners’ retirement really will mark the end of an era I ’VE been fortunate to have some great influences in my career, none more important than two trainers who helped to get me going 20 years ago. On the track, it was John Kiely. In the point-to-point field, it was Robert Tyner, who last week announced he is intending to retire from the sport. I’ve ridden almost 200 winners for Robert since those early days. Robert and Mary and the whole family have contributed so much to the sport and to the industry as a whole, brilliant with their horses, hard-working and unbelievably dedicated in keeping things going through good times and bad. Robert tended to use more traditional methods than many of the younger generation of handlers who have made a specialty of having young horses ready for a maiden success at four and a quick trip to the sales. He could do that too, of course, but if he reckoned a horse needed a bit more time to mature and develop he would always be prepared to be patient. We had some great days in pointto-points and shared a highlight on the track when Vision Des Flos won the Goffs Land Rover Bumper at Punchestown in 2017. Among the professionals, Philip Enright has had a long and successful time with the stable. One of his first big wins was on Spring The Que in the Pierse Hurdle at Leopardstown in 2007, when he had ridden only a handful of winners. The pair are still together. They had a winner on last week’s Tipperary card with the nine-yearold mare Direct Image. I rode her to the second of her two point-to-point wins a few seasons ago but she struggled at first when she went over hurdles and didn’t immediately take to chasing either. But Robert was prepared to give her time, and look what has happened. She won a handicap hurdle at Navan last September, then he sent her back over fences and she won successive handicap chases at Punchestown and Fairyhouse before being put away for the winter. Last Thursday, it was back over hurdles and she won again. Four in a row. Just one little example of what a good trainer he is. All I can say is that Robert, Mary,

Direct Image displayed the patience and skill of trainer Robert Tyner in landing a fourth successive win for Philip Enright
and the family will be hugely missed from the point-to-point scene. On a personal level, I owe them so much and for everyone involved it really will mark the end of an era.
Mullins has high hopes for Its On The Line As well as the Tyner winner, there was plenty of point-to-point
‘Robert was prepared to give Direct Image time. Just one example of what a good trainer he is’
interest on a Tipperary card that included a hunter chase and two bumpers. The novice hunter chase was won by Its On The Line, produced exactly at the right time by Charlie Mullins riding for his cousin Emmet, to beat the Mikey O’Connor-trainedand-ridden Nice To Meet. A five-year-old son of Presenting, Its On The Line has made good progress since contesting two maiden points in February. This win backed up a maiden hunter chase success at Cork. Bearing in mind what Emmet achieved in winning the Grand National with the sevenyear-old Noble Yeats, it was interesting to hear the long-term
plan he has for Its On The Line as a possible Cheltenham hunter chase contender for next year. Stamina should not be a problem as he’s a half-brother to the Welsh National winner and Grand National third Monbeg Dude. The geldings’ bumper was won by outsider Bushmans Pass. Johnny Barry’s mount improved on his point-to-point form to give a welcome success to Michael Flannery, who keeps a small string as well as playing a part in the running of Ballinrobe racecourse.
Time To Rocco win a big moment for Motherway
The mares’ bumper provided a big moment for Colin Motherway when Time To Rocco delivered him with his first winner on the track as a trainer, with his first runner since he took out a restricted licence.
The five-year-old Shirocco mare won a maiden at Tinahely a few months back and has a good staying pedigree. Her unraced dam is a close relation to Oscar Time, who was second and fourth in the Grand National for Martin Lynch and Sam Waley-Cohen. Colin kept up the good work at Bartlemy on Sunday when Pour Les Filles became his third winner of the season in the four-year-old division. It’s been a good season for the rider of Pour Les Filles, Brian Lawless. This was his 21st winner of the campaign, a career-best total that puts him in fifth place on the overall riders’ table. The other four-year-old winners at the weekend were saddled by Stuart Crawford, who took Saturday’s Broughshane race with Mahler gelding Kinbara, and Shark Hanlon, whose Westerner filly Ooh Betty won the opening race at Bartlemy, one of three weekend winners for Rob James, who had a double at Broughshane. With the usual two-day Necarne fixture not taking place this year, that’s the end of the season in the northern region, with Barry O’Neill crowned leading rider with 17 wins to 12 for Rob James. Down south the title race is still in the balance. James Hannon rode his 16th southern winner of the season on Just Hannah in a division of a mares’ maiden at Bartlemy, leaving him only one behind Chris O’Donovan. Chris is a former under 21-title winner but neither rider has won a senior title. It promises to be a hardfought battle between the two of them right to the end. We’re into the closing weeks of the season now, and the hunt committees have been doing such a good job at providing safe ground at venues all around the country. There’s significant expense involved, and I know all the handlers and riders appreciate what’s being done at a time when so many hunt committees are under financial pressure. The Kildare Foxhounds report that the ground at Punchestown has been watered and spiked ahead of Saturday’s meeting and it’s the same story from Ballindenisk, where the United meeting takes place on Sunday.

TALENT SPOTTER Sean Staples talks about his ambitions in the saddle and his education so far
I
WAS always into racing, even sitting down and watching Channel 4 on a Saturday my father would always have been looking at pedigrees, but I always wanted to be a jockey. There was no background of race-riding in my family. My father is a farmer and my mother is a midwife, but my father did keep a few broodmares and growing up I did a lot with the Killinick Harriers pony club. You could say it’s quite a good pony club for producing jockeys. I was in the same class as Sean O’Keeffe, Jack Hendrick, Tiernan Power and Barry Stone, and when you have lads like that it was always very competitive. All these years later it’s still the same riding point-topoints but back then we were all getting interested in racing at the same time. You would hear a story that Sean had started to ride out a thoroughbred at home, so then
‘I’d love to race-ride for a few years while my weight is good’ we all wanted to do the same. Nobody wanted to be left behind. I had my first go on a thoroughbred with Michael Murphy in Redbridge Stables. He was involved with the Killinicks and he had a few cobs I hunted for him now and again. Every chance we could get at weekends or school holidays we would go down there to ride ponies, cobs, anything at all. He used to take us off point-to-pointing every Sunday and we loved it. When I was nine or ten Mick asked me to start riding out and gradually I started schooling, or riding in a few schooling bumpers before I went into Joseph O’Brien’s for
two summers to get a bit more experience. Mick and his wife Ashleigh were brilliant. I rode my first winner for them on Redbridge Gold at Lingstown in 2018, which was a very special day. That is the Killinick Harriers’ own fixture and all my family were there on the day to watch on. I was also lucky enough to win a four-year-old maiden on Journey With Me at Ballindenisk last season for Mick.
It’s nice when you do a lot of the work with a horse, then you ride them to win their point-to-point and they go on to be a top-class horse down the line. That’s the special thing about the whole game. While I always wanted to be a jockey, my mother thought it was important to have a back-up plan, so she wanted me to go to college. I have one year left of agricultural science at University College Dublin, where I live with Michael
O’Sullivan, who is studying there too. I enjoy it, but my heart is in racing more than college. During Covid it was tough because it was remote learning and I was trying to ride out and keep college on the go at the same time, but I was probably focused more on racing. I ended up failing a few exams, so I’ve had the spring off, which did help me to get rolling in point-to-points because I was able to ride out in different yards, whereas in the autumn I was up in Dublin at college, which meant I wasn’t able to get my first winner of the season until February. Things have been going very well since then. I’ve had nine
NEWS AND VIEWS
winners since February and I rode three four-year-old winners for three different handlers over one weekend two weeks ago. I knew going into that weekend I had a nice book of rides. I said to myself if one of them worked out it would be a great weekend and then all of them won so it was nearly fairytale stuff. It all panned out perfectly for me. Andy Pierce’s Seeyouinmydreams, who won at Largy at the start of that weekend, looked very smart. She’s up there with the best I’ve ridden. She was bought only in December at Ascot, so it’s amazing how straightforward she was to come to hand. When we got her she was very green but she’s come on leaps and bounds and you would think she’s still going to improve a lot. She could be a right good filly. I’m getting a taste for it now, so I don’t know whether going back to college is a good idea or if I should put it off for the year. I’m quite tall, so I would love to go at race-riding full-time for a few years while my weight is good as it could become an issue. SEAN STAPLES WAS TALKING TO EOGHAIN WARD

Codd helps Motherway get off the mark FORMER rivals turned allies at Tipperary on Thursday when Jamie Codd rode Time To Rocco to provide Colin Mother way with his first winner under rules as a trainer. Mother way’s own riding career, in which he partnered 212 winners in the pointing fields, featured many great battles with his good friend Codd, as the pair were the top tw o r iders on the eastern circuit for many years. A 2004 title in that region for Motherway was followed by four years of having to settle for silver behind Codd and since retiring from the saddle the Yo u g h a l m a n h a s p r o v e d equally adept at training young point-to-pointers. This season his graduates, Party Central and Fonzerelli, have enjoyed Listed success for new connections, while Time To Rocco began a notable four days for Shanacoole stables culminating with a third fouryear-old maiden winner of the season courtesy of the impressive Pour Les Filles at Bartlemy.
O’Neill draws a blank but lands northern title
The second of four regional titles was decided at Broughshane on Saturday when Barry O’Neill earned his fourth title in the north despite drawing a rare blank at the County Antrim venue. T h e c a n c e l l at i o n o f t h e p o pula r t w o -day Ne car ne

fixture saw the pointing season in Northern Ireland come to a premature end with O’Neill top of the leaderboard thanks to 17 successes in the region. The Wexford rider is well on target to defend his champion rider title and will add the eastern title to his haul for the season when that draws to a close after this weekend’s cards at Punchestown and Stradbally.
That will leave all eyes on the southern region, where James Hannon bolstered his quest for a first regional title by moving one w inner clear of Chr is O’Donovan and Derek O’Connor.
Bowe and Curling lead way with sales vouchers
Some 89 handlers are already in with a chance of winning
vouchers for this summer’s Irish store sales as part of the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing mares voucher programme. Each handler who saddles a mare to win during the campaign will receive a ticket in the end-of-season draw, with their chances of succeeding increasing with each winning mare they send out.
Last season Micheal Bates, John Murphy, Michael Barrett, John Clifford and Graham McKeever each received a €1,000 voucher for the store sales. Ahead of this year’s draw, it is Colin Bowe and Sam Curling who will each have at least ten tickets in the draw after their successes over the last seven months.
The Colin Bowe-trained Getaway Lodge has now achieved the rare feat of winning two maiden point-topoints in the same year after it was revealed on Friday he has had a second success added to his record following an IHRB referral hearing. Almost a year before that April 25 hearing, the Getaway gelding had chas ed home Babylon Beach in an older maiden at Dromahane in May 2021 when the pair were the only runners to complete the race. The subsequent discovery of the prohibited substance dantrolene in the blood sample of Babylon Beach meant the disqualification of Debbie Hartnett’s charge and the race result being amended. T h i s a d d i t i o na l m a i d e n victory for Getaway Lodge, who later beat Lord Schnitzel to win a Monksgrange maiden on the opening weekend of this season, also leaves his Dromahane rider Barry Stone just one win short of riding out his 5lb claim.

Richhill takes a steep rise in ranks THE powerful Colin McKeeverWilson Dennison team produced a shock victory when Richhill landed the McBurney T ra n s p o r t f i v e - y e a r- o l d geldings’ maiden to launch a second double this season for rider Cormac Abernethy. Sent off as the clear outsider of the eight-strong field, having beaten only one rival at Loughanmore three weeks ago, the Presenting gelding was once again ridden positively. However, on this occasion Abernethy was able to repel all challengers to defeat Gordon Elliott’s well-backed newcomer Zettabyte by a short head. “He’s improved from his run at Loughanmore,” Antrimbased McKeever said. “He’ll improve again for that and, all being well, he’ll go to the Doncaster sale in a fortnight.” The 23-year-old rider was back in Dennison’s black and white silks to complete his brace on Ballybentragh in the Raymart adjacent maiden. As with Richhill 30 minutes earlier, the Fame And Glory gelding was the longer-priced of the McKeever pair and the newcomer stayed on strongly on the climb to the penultimate fence to defeat the more experienced Josies Dylan. Ballybentragh was bought for €75,000 as a foal and this one-and-a-half-length victory continued a change of fortune for McKeever’s stable which had been hit by illness earlier in the campaign. “It’s great to see the horses running so well,” McKeever said of the five-year-old, who will join Richhill at the upcoming Goffs UK Spring sale in Doncaster. “Every horse I’ve run today was in a battle, which is great to see. He’s a lovely, big, raw horse and he won with a good bit in hand.” Rob James was the other r i d e r t o l e av e t h e C ou nt y Antrim venue with a double as he was on board Some Man for a crucial victory in the Doherty Woodshavings open.

Kinbara still had nine horses in front of him at the third-last but cut through to finish best of all
It means the nine-year-old becomes the first horse to move on to the five-winner mark for the season as he easily a c c o u n t e d f o r t h e re c e n t Oldcastle runner-up Vis Ta Loi by two and a half lengths. The success puts Some Man one clear of a chasing pack of six on the four-winner mark in his bid to provide Fermanagh handler David Christie and owner Ray Nicholas with a second champion point-topoint horse title after Eddies Miracle two years earlier. “It’s at the time of the year where we have to go now,” Christie said. “He slipped up last week, which complicated things a wee bit. He’s top of the leading horses table but there’s a whole stack just behind. “At this time of year you don’t know what might happen from one week to the next. He’s very consistent, looks really well and is happy, so as long as he stays like that we’ll keep going.” A rare runner in the pointing f i e l d s f o r To n y M a r t i n completed the James double as Royal Juniper left previous form behind to land the Wilson Waste Collection Services older geldings’ maiden. The six-year-old had finished a distant third in a top-notch older maiden at Tattersalls three weeks earlier and that stood him in good stead as he repelled Donnchadh Doyle’s grey Viking’s Way and Brian Lawless by two lengths. Lawless enjoyed better fortunes in the Dennison JCB mares’ maiden when A Law Of Her Own made a perfect start to her career to continue the excellent recent run of success for the Ballycrystal stable of Matthew Flynn O’Connor. Having combined to win four-year-old maidens with the impressive Wrappedupinmay

and The Gooner recently, it was the turn of the five-yearold mare to contribute a seventh success of the season for the Wexford handler. Her one length defeat of the Loughanmore third Isabella Bee provided the dual Group 1 winner Lawman, who is now a resident stallion at Haras de G ra n d ca mp, w i t h a f i r s t success in the pointing fields. Former northern champion Ben Crawford moved on to the ten-winner mark for the campaign when sporting his own silks on the Dennison Commercials four-year-old maiden winner Kinbara. The half-brother to Neil M u l h o l l a n d ’s t h r e e - t i m e winner Brief Times came from off the pace to power up the run-in and get his head in front when it mattered in a bunched finished in which just over six lengths covered the first six home. The Mahler gelding will now be offered for sale after his halflength defeat of fellow newcomer Ballystone.

UNITED AT BARTLEMY SUNDAY Pictures: HEALY RACING
Pour Les Filles puts on smart display before his sales date AFTER landing his first victory under rules on Thursday when Time To Rocco took the mares’ bumper at Tipperary, Colin Motherway continued his rich vein of form by saddling Pour Les Filles for a taking debut success in the Goffs UK Spring Sale four-year-old geldings’ maiden. The Pour Moi gelding, a £33,000 acquisition at the sponsor’s sale last year, was always positioned close to the lead as Ivegotdapower cut out the running. British-bred Pour Les Filles jumped into the lead for Brian Lawless at the final fence and then powered clear on the flat to contain favourite Trooper Thorn by four lengths in the silks of his handler ’s w ife Linda. “He was bred by the late Robert Chugg and he’s a very good jumper,” Motherway said of Pour Les Filles, a son of the black-type placed mare Ravello Bay, who is a sister to Grade 2 winning hurdler Marello. “He’ll go to a sale now.” Rob James, having partnered two winners at Broughshane the previous day, excelled in bringing the Shark Hanlontrained Ooh Betty from well off the pace to win the Tattersalls NH & Coolmore Stud fouryear-old mares’ maiden. Ooh Betty, soundly beaten when seventh on her debut in the Dromahane maiden won by Rossea the previous Sunday, was some way off the leaders for much of the race. H o w e v e r, t h e w i n n i n g daughter of Westerner eased her way into contention from two-out and surged into the lead 100 yards out to beat the a l w a y s -p ro m i n e n t Q u e e n Annie by two and a half lengths. “She jumps great and is a bumper type; she’ll go to the sales at Doncaster later in the month,” Hanlon said, having welcomed back his first fouryear-old winner of the season. Colin Bowe’s Thomas Mor returned to the form of his second to Dancing City on his debut at Borris House in November by winning the McCarthy Insurance Group five-year-old geldings’ maiden, which attracted the biggest field of the afternoon in 15 runners. Thomas Mor, having his fifth start, made his way through from mid-division to take up the running for Barry O’Neill before the last and the son of Dylan Thomas asserted to beat

Bertie Finn, an 18-year-old from Oulart who works with Bowe, brought his career tally to four by producing Courtown-based owner-trainerbreeder Pat Doyle’s Mangan Sue to lead in the closing stages in the Liam Walsh & Associates mares’ winner-of-one. The six-year-old Mangan Sue, who Doyle rides out every day, supplemented her Borris Hou s e ma i d e n s u c c e ss i n March by forging into the lead as the line loomed to beat Fiery Brown by a neck in the day’s closest finish. A maiden hurdle could be next on the agenda for the Arcadio mare if she is not sold. It was an excellent afternoon for Wexford-trained horses as C l e a r i e stow n - b a s e d Ma rk Scallan continued his rich vein
of form by sending out Bonne Derreen, whose dam is a halfsister to Rathvinden, to win the second division of the Anthony & Associates Agri Consultants five-year-old-and-upwards mares’ maiden. Owned and bred by David Byrne from Enniscorthy, the five-year-old went to the head of affairs with Tiernan Power after the last to beat Gonedairy by two lengths. The David Murphy-trained Just Hannah, whose dam is a half-sister to Paisley Park,
made amends for pulling up on her debut when favourite in the Dromahane maiden won by Moviddy last month. She took u p t h e r u n n i ng f o r Ja m e s Hannon before the last to deny long-time leader Lost Connections by two lengths in the first division of this same contest. Just Hannah is owned by Pat Hurley from Borrisoleigh. Tim Townend’s homebred Padjoes Legacy sprang a small surprise by leading from two out with Eoin O’Brien to beat long-time leader Samos Island
