Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point

Vital that our sport stays rooted as part of our local communities

T

HE new season has started on notes of optimism. From what I’ve seen and heard around the country there’s a lot of fresh talent on the scene. On the administrative side, the insurance problems that have been such a major source of concern in the recent past have been resolved for the season ahead. There have been plenty of runners on safe ground in the opening weeks. There’s a lot to look forward to. If I have one major hope for the season it’s that local hunt committees in every part of the country will continue the good work of recent years in making their fixtures suitable occasions to attract families for a day-out experience that doesn’t just consist of six or seven races. In the long term, this is the only way to secure the future of the sport. It’s fabulous for all whose livelihoods are involved that Irish point-topoints are such an important element in the jump racing scene in Ireland and Britain but it’s vital that the sport stays well rooted as part of local communities We’re fortunate to benefit from the voluntary work done by individual enthusiasts and hunt committees. Let’s hope we can keep on doing our best to maintain that effort and build on our traditions. We’re not long into the new campaign and the defending champions Colin Bowe and Barry O’Neill are setting a strong early pace, both needing only one winner to reach double figures. The pair struck at Loughanmore with Wallace Olinger, who had strolled to a debut victory under Sophie Carter in a novice riders’ event at Loughrea only 13 days earlier. He’s a half-brother to dual Cheltenham Festival winner Bob Olinger and it will be interesting to see how his career develops. Apparently, the present plan is for him to continue in points. He looked professional in beating Voleur De Terres, an experienced mare ridden by Dara McGill for Ger Quinn, both of whom have made a fine start to the season. I was impressed by Dara last season when he rode 16 winners and became the first northern-based rider to win the under-21 title since its introduction more than 30 years ago.

HEALY RACING

Champion handler Colin Bowe and champion rider Barry O’Neill combine as Wallace Olinger wins the Jackson’s Butcher Shop & Bakery winners-of-two

He also began to make an impression on the track. I thought he gave the Dermot McLoughlintrained Angelo Dundee a lovely ride to win a big-field bumper at the Punchestown festival. He also rode Reflection Of You, a promising daughter of

‘I had four mounts at Umma House and got off the mark on Nowwhatdoyouthink, a Sam Curling-trained Mount Nelson gelding’

Jack Hobbs, to win the mares’ maiden at Loughammore for Warren Ewing. Earlier in the month he rode two winners at Toomebridge for the Quinn team who completed another double last Saturday, this time with Noel McParlan in the saddle. Teeshan, carrying the wellknown colours of Philip McBurney, absolutely hacked up in the four-year-old maiden. He’s out of Miss Pepperpot who won five races for Francis Flood. Her stud record hasn’t been the best, but this son of a Westerner looks capable of advertising the pedigree. Barry O’Neill dominated the Island

fixture, riding four maiden winners, including two useful-looking youngsters from the Bowe team. The four-year-old Leaky Cauldron showed a good turn of foot to overtake the front-running Cave Article from the Donnchadh Doyle stable, and the year-older Big John Wayne, who is as physically impressive as his name suggests, jumped well and made all the running. Even though it’s early days, it’s clear that many of the Bowe horses are going to be popular when the sales season gets under way. The stable has a phenomenal record in producing top-class horses for the track, and the assembly line keeps on moving. On a personal level, I was delighted to be back in the saddle for the first time this season at the Umma House fixture on Sunday. I

had four mounts and got off the mark on Nowwhatdoyouthink, a Sam Curling-trained Mount Nelson gelding, in a four-year-old maiden. He knew his job well having had a couple of runs in the spring but left me with an impression there could be plenty of improvement to come. I enjoyed riding Dollar Collar to win a mares’ maiden for the Deacon family who have a great tradition in the racing community of County Wexford, She’s a home-bred mare out of Another Dollar, who won four races when trained by Jessica Harrington for Godfrey Deacon, owner of the Champion Hurdle winner Granville Again in the early stages of his career. The day gave me an ideal start to the season. It always does the confidence good to kick off with a couple of winners.

IN FOCUS Daniel Hyde on Focus Point getting the better of Bold Enough and his start in the pointto-point field

I

T WAS great to start the season off with a winner on my first ride of the new season. Focus Point has been a brilliant horse, but going to Tinahely we didn’t think we had him fit enough for his first run of the season. I live with my cousin Harry Swan in college and he was riding Fakir D’Alene in the race for Gordon Elliott. As we were driving down I told him I was just planning to get Focus Point around and, if he wasn’t going to finish in the first four we would pull him up. We were working towards getting him fit for Tattersalls at the end of the month so it was a surprise to win, especially as it was in such a competitive race. I had five wins on Focus Point last season, including my first in a point-to-point, so he has been very good for me. His first couple of wins were all very easy. He landed his maiden by 40 lengths and then he took his winners-of-one and winners-of-two fairly easily. He finished second a couple of times after that, but he won on his first try in an open towards the end of last season in a non-graded winners’ race at Grennan, and on his last run of the season he beat Bold Enough at Ballingarry, which was great. The fields might not have been that competitive for his first couple of wins, although he had started beating some half decent horses, but it was still a pretty big surprise that he managed to beat Bold Enough. That day in Ballingarry I

thought we were beaten when Bold Enough overtook us coming out of the back straight, but he battled really well and came back at the last. He really seems to be improving still and is only seven so there is a lot to look forward to. We’ll try him again in a hunter chase this season. We

ran him at Down Royal last season and he didn’t feel off or anything that day, but for whatever reason he didn’t run amazingly. We still haven’t decided, but if he was to prove good enough, then the Foxhunters at Cheltenham or Aintree would be a target this season. He is a great jumper, so he

would probably love Aintree and going over the National fences and it would be great fun riding him, but Cheltenham would be amazing too. We’ll just see how this season goes. My dad Tim had ridden in point-to-points and bumpers, and I always wanted to take out my licence too. I grew up

riding ponies, competing on working hunters, and going hunting with the Tipperary Foxhounds before I progressed to riding racehorses when I was 11 or 12. We had only around ten horses in training for bumpers and point-to-points then and I started off with the easier ones. Gradually, I was riding more

NEWS AND VIEWS

of them and when I was 16 I started riding in bumpers. All Hell Let Loose gave me my first ride in a point-to-point and he’s been a great horse. My older brother Tim had his first point-to-point ride on him, so did Harry, and another of my cousins Josh Williamson had his first point-to-point ride on him last Sunday. We’ve all learnt the ropes on him. Tim was second on him seven times, but we still haven’t been able to get a win on him since we got him. I’m studying engineering at Trinity. It’s completely different to racing and I’m keen on some parts of it but I’m more interested in the horses at the moment. It’s a four-year degree with a fifth year for the masters, which I will probably end up doing. I’m in my third year now and it is really full-on. There is a real step up this year but I still try to get home most weekends to ride out the horses we have there and it’s just a case of trying to keep fit while I’m here. Race-riding was something I wanted to do for a bit of fun. I don’t think I’d ever go professional, but the aim was always to ride a few winners. I’m enjoying it at the moment so I’ll try to keep it going for a while yet. DANIEL HYDE WAS TALKING TO EOGHAIN WARD

Island Foxhounds find new home at Peppard’s Castle A PROGRAMME of 74 fixtures has been unveiled for the spring term which begins on Saturday December 30 with the Duhallow Kanturk fixture at Dromahane. Set across 22 weekends, the season will again conclude with a double-header at Ballingarry and Inchydoney on Sunday, May 26. For 2024, the Island Foxhounds will have a new course at Peppard’s Castle, County Wexford, which will be unveiled on Saturday April 13, while an early Easter, which falls across the final weekend of March, has resulted in a change to the schedule of fixtures.

The Ballymacad meeting, which has traditionally been a staple of Easter Sunday, remains in late April on Sunday, April 21, with Monksgrange an addition to Easter Sunday on March 31. The Fermanagh Harriers return to a two-day spring fixture at Necarne for the first time in three years, with the County Down’s - who race at Moira this Saturday remaining at the Gortnamoney Farm venue for their spring date of Saturday, April 20. Their traditional venue of Loughbrickland is absent from the schedule this season. Me a n w h i l e, t h e K i l d a re Foxhounds fixture at

Punchestown switches to a Saturday when it will be one of two meetings on the final Saturday of February, racing alongside the Tynan & Armagh fixture at Farmacaffley on February 24.

Sheehan joins the breakthrough brigade

The new season may only be eight fixtures old yet there have already been five riders who have achieved their breakthrough victories in the pointing fields. After James Fennell and Finn Brickley gained their first successes in this sphere on the opening day of the season at Castletown-Geoghegan, Erin

Dunseath and Pandora Briselden followed a fortnight later. Last Sunday at Umma House it was the turn of 18-year-old Cat ha l Sh e e ha n , w i t h t h e Ballynoe native the second rider this season for whom Declan Queally has supplied an initial points winner. Sheehan rides out daily for Queally before travelling to the stable of Batt O’Connell in the afternoon. Such personal milestones are notable events for each of the riders and it is great to see fresh additions to the riding ranks being rewarded early in their careers. A total of 15 riders have

already enjoyed their initial point-to-point mounts this season and it is an encouraging sign to see such strong numbers of new additions to the sport so early in the campaign.

More sales set for British racedays

The competition to sell pointto-point form horses looks as intense as the on-track action, with a rejigged calendar of point-to-point sales taking shape for the run-up to Christmas. This month, the renamed Tattersalls Jockey Club Sales announced it would be operating the Tingle Creek sale from this December.

That boutique sale was introduced to the calendar of pointto-point sales last year by Goffs UK and featured the recent Uttoxeter runner-up Brook Bay as the top lot when bought by Jonjo O’Neill for £380,000 a week after his debut Lingstown victory. Last week, Goffs announced it would be reintroducing a select sale at Newbury on Coral Gold Cup day for the first time in ten years. The net result of which is that three sales of point-to-point form horses will now take place across three consecutive weeks from Newbury on December 2, through Sandown on December 9 and Cheltenham on December 15.

WEEKEND REPORTS

SOUTH WESTMEATH AT UMMA HOUSE SUNDAY

Moon mission gives Keating’s season lift-off TOM KEATING wasted little time in recording his opening success of the season as Maid On The Moon, his first runner of the new campaign, ran out a game winner of the feature Des Nally Developments open for novice riders. A £14,000 purchase from Alan King’s Barbury Castle stable at the final Tattersalls Ascot sale last June, the sixyear-old had finished tailed off in her only start over fences. There were no signs of that inexperience as on her first start for Keating’s Nicholastown Stud stable the daughter of Pether’s Moon was guided by Hannah Phillips to a onelength defeat of Merry Poppins. “It’s a sharp track here and you don’t want to be far away because they don’t really come back a lot of the time,” the winning rider said. “She’s just in the yard for me to ride for a bit of fun. This was her first run for us so we’re delighted.”

Star performance

Once taking up the running at the midway point, Midnight Show set a tempo that ensured few rivals were ever able to get into a challenging position

Mer r y Poppins’ handler Derek O’Connor was the only rider to leave the Westmeath venue with a double. On his first day of race-riding this season the 11-time champion first tasted victory with Nowwhatdoyouthink in the Tattersalls NH, The Motte & Bailey Restaurant and Egan’s Bar & Lounge four-year-old geldings’ maiden. Returning to the promise of his Belclare debut in March, when he chased home the highly touted Romeo Coolio, Sam Curling’s Mount Nelson gelding struck the front approaching the penultimate fence and had enough in hand to hold off the closing Bobby’s

Nelson by a rapidly diminishing length and a half. “He’s a lovely horse who had a very good run the first day,” Curling said. “We tidied up his wind over the summer and it’s made a massive difference.” O’Connor completed his double courtesy of a rare ride for Clonroche handler Daryl Deacon aboard Dollar Collar in the Allen Motors five-yearold and upwards mares’ maiden. The Kingston Hill-sired bay took a big leap forward from her initial two outings in the spring to make light work of dismissing the more experienced Destilado by five lengths. “We always thought a bit of her, but we had a virus in the yard last season and things just d i d n ’ t w o r k o u t f o r h e r,” Deacon said. “She will probably be sold now.” Midnight Show could have been considered unlucky not to make a successful stable

debut when falling three-out at Loughrea on his first outing for Declan Queally this month. The Leading Light gelding more than made amends in the Brian Dunning Farrier five- and six-year-old geldings’ maiden. After leading for much of the final mile and a half, the Richard Cotter-owned bay was briefly challenged at the penultimate fence by Willitgoahead, but that

proved to be short lived as Midnight Show powered clear to a 12-length victory, the first in the career of 18-year-old Cork native Cathal Sheehan. We i g h - t e n t c o l l e a g u e s Harley Dunne and Rob James parted with €58,000 to secure Piper Park last year and it looks to be money well spent on the evidence of the winning debut by the Walk In

Th e Pa rk ma re i n t h e Ji m Derwin Equestrian four-yearold mares’ maiden. James found himself aboard her biggest threat as his mount, We d n e s d a y A d d a m s , w a s closing on the run-in only to have the wandering winner drift across her path, a move which settled the outcome of the race. Two lengths ultimately separated the pair, with

EAST ANTRIM AT LOUGHANMORE SATURDAY

Newcomer Teeshan in a class of his own TEESHAN was the talk of the track at Loughanmore after he lit up the Antrim venue with a glittering front-running display in the Dennison Commercials f o u r- y e a r- o l d g e l d i n g s’ maiden. G e r a l d Q u i n n ’s c h a r g e disputed the running with Always A Reason until edging ahead from the fifth of the 14 obstacles and it was soon plainly apparent he was travelling best as his toiling rivals began to emit distress signals. Boyles Hill went in vain pursuit two out but Teeshan, a €62,000 Goffs Land Rover sale graduate, drew further and further clear. At the post, Noel McParlan’s mount had 41 lengths to spare over Boyles Hill with eight and a half lengths back to Majestic Moment. The trio of debutants were the only finishers from the 11 runners who set out.

Star performance

Few four-year-old maiden races are won by 41 lengths in a time 16 seconds faster than any other race on the card, which points to Teeshan being a seriously above-average performer

Teeshan is a mid-May foal out of the five-time winning mare Miss Pepperpot who was Grade 2-placed over fences and he sported the colours of Philip McBurney. The Broughshane-based owner said: “Teeshan was in training last season and Gerald was always happy with him but we took our time as he was always a horse we were looking forward to.” Above And Beyond completed a Quinn/McParlan double in the Move R ight Therapy older geldings’ maiden.

Shantwopointfive makes a winning debut in the five-year-old-and-upwards mares’ maiden

The recent Toomebridge third was always at the head of affairs and he quickened into the lead two out. Ballymoney went in pursuit on the approach to the last but Above And Beyond put further daylight between himself and his rivals and returned with eight and a half lengths to spare over Hymie Weiss. “We’ve had a great day,” Q u i n n s a i d . “A b o v e A n d Beyond ran well to come third i n To o m eb r i dg e a n d h e’ l l probably now go for a winners race.” The Warren Ewing-ownedand-trained Reflection Of You posted a battling front-running success under Dara McGill in the Tattersalls NH four-yearold mares’ maiden. Jewel Of Windsor from the penultimate obstacle. The daughter of Jack Hobbs came back to lead on the inner at the last and she crossed the line with two and three-quarter l e n g t h s t o s p a re ov e r t h e favourite Katie Daniels, who was doing all of her best work at the finish. “She’s a smart filly who I think is very good and she’ll now go to the sales,” Ewing said of Reflection Of You, a €37,000 Goffs Land Rover sale acquisition who is a half-sister to dual winning hurdler in Britain The Wounded Knee from the same family as Grade 2 victor Rosaker. Cormac Abernethy partnered his second winner of the season in the Dennison JCB five-year-old geldings’ maiden aboard newcomer Unionhill, who is trained by Colin McKeever for the land owner Wilson Dennison. The Soldier Of Fortune-sired Unionhill, whose dam is a halfsister to five-time Grade 1 winner Bellshill, survived a

final-fence error to beat fellow pacesetter Tommys Charm. Shantwopointfive justified the trek from handler Peter C ro ke’s G l e n e a l y , C o u nt y Wicklow, base by making a winning debut under Brian Lawless in the Waste Collection Services five-year-old-andupwards mares’ maiden. The Maurice Sheehyowned-and- bred daughter of Shantou led from three out and, despite running green in the closing stages, she defeated Ambush Annie by a length. C o l i n B o w e ’s Wa l l a c e Olinger supplemented his recent Loughrea maiden success by becoming the only winning favourite of the afternoon in the Jackson’s Butcher Shop & Bakery winners-of-two. A half-brother to Bob Olinger, the Fame And Glory gelding made his way to the front two out for Barry O’Neill to account for the mare Voleur De Terres by five lengths in the Brian Acheson silks.

Flawless performance from Leaky Cauldron BARRY O’NEILL treated his local fans to a demonstration of why he has been champion rider for the past seven seasons by securing a remarkable fourtimer at the County Wexford track that is just a stone’s throw from his home in Kiltealy. It was reigning handler Colin Bowe who supplied two of O’Neill’s four victories and the pair kicked off proceedings with success in the Tattersalls NH four-year-old maiden with Leaky Cauldron. This son of Well Chosen, who was a €42,000 purchase from the Tattersalls Ireland May Sale, cruised to the front at the second last and kept on s t ro n g l y o n t h e r u n - i n t o register a five-length victory over the Donnchadh Doyletrained Cave Article. “That was a lovely performance,” Bowe said. “He is a n i c e h o r s e a n d h e’s b e e n showing us plenty. He was very good there and is an exciting type.” The reigning champions also collected the Connolly’s Red Mills and Baltimore Stables five-year-old geldings’ maiden with Big John Wayne. A n e ye cat ch e r at B o r r i s House last season before his l a s t- f e n c e d e p a r t u re, t h e Shantou gelding overcame an absence of 300 days to defeat newcomer Backinaction by two and a half lengths. “He’s a big horse and has taken a bit of time,” Bowe said. “He had a nice start as a fouryear-old and was running a grand race when falling at Borris. He jumps and stays and i s g o i n g t o ma k e a l ov e l y staying chaser.” All the chatter before the Gavin Kinch & Liam Kenny five- and six-year-old mares’ maiden had centred on Robert Te c t o r ’s M a h l e r- s i r e d newcomer Take A Hike and she was duly sent off the odds-on favourite. However O’Neill was seen to good effect on her chief market rival Weir Lane and they upset the favourite with a three-anda-half-length victory. Wi n n i n g h a n d l e r D av i d O’Brien said: “Weir Lane’s owner Mike Allen is from the UK and she will probably have one more point run before heading to Britain to run under rules.” Carlow handler Aidan Fitzgerald continued his fine start to the campaign as Commander Of Ten gave him a second success in seven days when opening his account in

Lifetime Ambition finished third to the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Galophin Des Champs in last season’s John Durkan Chase and could be tough to defeat in the open division

the Kenneth Davis older maiden. Placed over hurdles at Cheltenham almost a year to the day earlier when with Michael Scudamore, the Doyen gelding proved to be O’Neill’s easiest w inner when handsomely accounting for an improved Minella Staycation by three and a half lengths. “He came from very good friends of mine, Lynne and Angus Maclennan,” Fitzgerald said. “I’m delighted with that

and he’ll run away in winners’ races and hopefully he’ll end up in a banks race at Punchestown.” Eoin Staples registered a fourth career success and first of the season when Rossbridge prevailed in a thrilling finish to the Ire-Well Pallets & Chris Hatton four-year-old auction maiden. The Affinisea gelding had to fend off rivals on either side to triumph by three-quarters of a length for absent handler Rob James who was in action at Umma House. “He’ll head to the sales and is a good solid horse,” the stable’s representative, Craig Caisey, said. “He had a good run the last day at Loughrea where he bumped into a very decent horse in Olympy De Cerisy, but

he stepped forward from that and is a nice type.” Pa t D o y l e g a i n e d g r e a t pleasure out of watching his daughter Susie partner the exciting track recruit Lifetime Ambition to victory in the Cooney Furlong ladies open. The four-time track winner signalled that a productive campaign lies ahead by defeating recent CastletownGeoghegan winner The Bosses Oscar by six lengths, much to the delight of the winning handler. “That was a thrill; my heart is going stronger than if it was a four-year-old!” Doyle said. “He’s a lovely horse and we’re very thankful to the owners for letting us have him. We’ll campaign him on nice ground and he’ll run in those races that Susie can ride him in.”

ENTRIES have a reference number to the horse’s last run, form figures (latest on right), owner, handler and exclusive rating (same scale as rules RPR).
