Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point
Pointing has now pushed aside bumpers as top talent nursery
O
NE of the biggest changes in Irish jump racing since I began my riding career is how point-to-points have taken over from bumpers as the main shop window for future jumping talent. Irish bumpers were often the first place you would see the stars of the future. Irish jump racing was a lot weaker than it is these days and the most promising bumper winners were often snapped up by powerful British stables. Many of them had agents constantly on the lookout and owners wealthy enough to pay big prices. Bumpers are still important but gone are the days of huge fields of unknown quantities. Fields are usually smaller now and one or more of the main fancies is likely to have seen action in a maiden point and may already have changed hands for big money. One way or another, they are more likely to be housed in a top Irish stable. In the last few weeks we’ve seen several highly regarded point winners getting a first taste of bumper competition and two of Gordon Elliott’s team are now among the leading contenders for the Weatherbys Champion Bumper at Cheltenham. Jalon D’Oudairies won a maiden at Lingstown last March for Donnchadh Doyle. Four days later he was sold to Gordon Elliott Racing for £420,000 at the Tattersalls Cheltenham Festival sale. He made his racecourse debut at Fairyhouse at the beginning of December carrying the colours of Gigginstown House Stud and won in good style from another horse with point-to-point experience. Gordon brought him out again at Leopardstown after Christmas when the opposition was headed by Redemption Day, a Willie Mullinstrained gelding running for the first time since finishing second to his stablemate Facile Vega in the Grade 1 bumper at the 2022 Punchestown festival. Jalon D’Oudairies made all the running and was impressive in the way he dealt with a strong challenge from Redemption Day. You would have to make some allowance for the fact that the runner-up had been off for so long, but it was a taking

Romeo Coolio joins Jalon D’Oudairies as a big prospect in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper for Gordon Elliott
performance. Gordon immediately said he would head to Cheltenham with him. Seeing that Michael O’Leary and the Gigginstown team are more interested in the longer term and not usually over-concerned about bumpers, a lot of people thought that was significant.
‘We saw a top-class prospect at Punchestown on Monday when Willie Mullins introduced Maughreen’
That’s a fair point, but we’ll have to wait to see what happens, especially after last Saturday’s bumper at Fairyhouse, won by Gordon with Romeo Coolio, the joint sales-topper at the Cheltenham sale with Jalon D’Oudaries. I was on the runner-up Sporting Glory for Pat Fahy, a bright prospect whose pedigree suggests he could do well over staying distances when he goes jumping. He ran a nice race but Harry Swan had matters well under control on Romeo Coolio in the last furlong. He’s a son of Kayf Tara and won at Belclare on the Sunday before Cheltenham. Like Jalon D’Oudairies,
he was trained by Donnchadh Doyle, who is having a massive influence on the bumper scene this season. He also produced Joystick, who was third in a maiden at Quakerstown last April and made a winning start for Willie Mullins at Leopardstown last month, beating the Declan Queally-trained point winner Artic Lane. Another member of the Doyle family, Cormac, was responsible for Jeroboam Machin when he won a maiden at Durrow last March. This Joshua Tree gelding is now with Emmet Mullins and looked promising when winning a bumper at Fairyhouse in November. I also liked the look of Wingmen when he won by eight lengths on his bumper debut at Naas in the middle of last month. He was a 12-length winner at Ballycrystal around this
time last year, beating Backtonormal, a horse I rode to win a bumper at Ballinrobe in the spring. Of course, there are still some very good horses who appear in public for the first time in bumpers. We saw one such top-class prospect at Punchestown on Monday when Willie Mullins introduced Maughreen, a Walk In The Park mare out of a half-sister to the brilliant Faugheen. In the last five years, three of the Cheltenham bumper winners were won by a horse who began in points. Envoi Allen (2019) and Ferny Hollow (2020) both started with Colin Bowe, and the 2021 winner Sir Gerhard began his career with Ellmarie Holden. The 2020 race was a great example of the depth of the talent coming out of the Irish point-to-point field. Runner-up Appreciate It, thirdplaced Queens Brook, and the fifth Eskylane all started in points. Two seasons ago, the former Sean Doyle-trained point winner American Mike finished second for Gordon Elliott, while last year Fact To File (Donnchadh Doyle to Willie Mullins) and Captain Teague (Colin Bowe to Paul Nicholls) finished second and third respectively behind the outstanding A Dream To Share. There are many reasons why things have changed. The introduction of the autumn point-topoint campaign after the foot-andmouth outbreak in 2001 was a big factor. That made running a point-topoint yard a proper commercial and business proposition. All-weather gallops and a general improvement in facilities allowed handlers to get more work done with young horses without jeopardising their later careers. Fashions changed, as owners became keen to speed up the process of getting horses to the track. We also saw the introduction of a lot of horses with French breeding traditionally associated with earlier development. For my part, I was fortunate to get a lot of experience in bumpers, much of it provided by John Kiely, a fantastic mentor. But my generation of riders, and those who have come after us, owe a massive amount to how point-to-pointing has come to be such an important nursery ground.

IN FOCUS Tadhg O’Leary on giving back to breeders and teaming up with Sam Curling
I
HAVE been in business for more than 30 years, supplying oats to a lot of people in the equine industry all across the country through my company Dungar Quality Oats. Breeders have always supported me well and I’m also a National Hunt breeder myself. I know the ins and outs of it, the costs involved and the rewards you get but, without breeders, Ireland wouldn’t have the reputation it has of being one of the best producers of racehorses in the world. That is the reason I wanted to give a little back to the person who has done a lot of the hard work, between covering the mares, foaling and sales preparation. They are often the people who are not rewarded for all they do. This year I am putting up a cash prize of €2,500 that one lucky Irish National Hunt breeder will win. The winner will be the breeder of whichever Irish-bred four- or five-year-old mare, who ran in a point-to-point here between January 1 and May 31, goes on to achieve the highest price at either a Tattersalls or Goffs point-to-point sale in Ireland or Britain during that period. This prize could be won by any individual breeder, large or small. I’m a breeder myself, but I’m not from a horse background. I was actually born and reared in Donnybrook in Dublin and I bought my first horse at Ballsbridge in 1986. I’ve kept at it since. I haven’t had great success with it, but that is the luck of the draw and
‘I never tell a trainer what to do. You employ them to do the job and you have to leave them to do it’

I accept that. I bought a mare in the first of the Goffs Land Rover sales. She was called Roscrea Travel and she went on to win a point-to-point and two races on the track. I’d entered her in the Pertemps Final but we were balloted out by one. I kept her
as a broodmare and she had eight foals over the years. I was very lucky to find Sam Curling, who trains my horses. I’ve had two or three winners with him, which has been great for the small number of horses I’ve had. I remember reading one day
about a man who was having his first winner after 40 years, so I count myself lucky I’ve had a few winners already. I knew Sam’s father-in-law, Jim Doyle, who used to buy oats from me, and when I asked him to recommend a trainer he pointed me in the
direction of Sam. So I said I would give him a horse which ended up by winning his point-to-point in Nenagh. I have another in training with him this season. He’s a four-year-old Milan horse who hasn’t been named yet but Sam is looking to name him,
NEWS AND VIEWS
so maybe I’ll call him The Oatsman. I never tell a trainer what to do. You employ them to do the job and you have to leave them to do it as they know what they’re doing. I have two broodmares at the moment. I had three or four at one point but it was just getting out of hand as I also had the business to run, so I had to cut my cloth. Usually, I would keep the horses I’ve bred until they are three years old and then send them to Sam to race them. If they run well in a point-topoint, then I’d sell them. Boomtime Banker was a good mare who Sam trained for me to win at Toomebridge under Derek O’Connor and she has gone on to win twice over hurdles in England for DJ Jeffreys. I love the point-to-point game. If I’m not at a fixture I would be looking up the results on a Sunday to see who is having winners. It’s a hobby, I love doing it and I love the job I’m in because I produce oats for horses across the industry. It’s lovely to be in a job you like. It is the dream of all breeders to produce a good one, and I will keep at it. There are ups and downs, you have to enjoy the good days because there are enough bad days, so I hope that this prize will help to encourage Irish National Hunt breeders to keep doing what they do. Wrong result gives right reading of Doyle’s skill THE rescheduled Lawlor’s of Naas Novice Hurdle was a fine advertisement of Pat Doyle’s talents in educating future Grade 1 stars when Readin Tommy Wrong led home a clean sweep for Willie Mullins. The Authorized gelding was n o t o n l y b re d by Wa l t e r Connors he also sported the c o l o u r s o f t h e Wa t e r f o r d veterinary surgeon when he made his debut in a point-topoint at Bellharbour, having been entrusted to Doyle for his early education. Despite being beaten in that four-year-old maiden in 2022, finishing second to Out Of Office, he has since won all four starts under rules for Mullins, culminating in this Grade 1. The victory was also notable
for giving the Suirview stables handler back-to-back successes in the Naas feature for his graduates as the win of Readin To m m y W r o n g , f o l l o w e d Champ Kiely 12 months earlier. A s w i t h R e a d i n To m m y Wrong, Champ Kiely did not win his four-year-old maiden w h e n w i t h D o y l e , h av i n g parted company with Pa King at Dromahane in December 2020, but he followed a similar route from Tipperar y to Mullins’ Closutton stables. The Lawlor’s of Naas Novice Hurdle was promoted to Grade 1 status in 2015 and the v i c t o r y o f R e a d i n To m my Wrong ensured former Irish point-to-point horses had won all bar one of the ten runnings of the race as a Grade 1
– taking in each of the last nine editions courtesy of Bellshill, Death Duty, Next Destination, Battleoverdoyen, Envoi Allen, Bob Olinger, Ginto, Champ Kiely and now Readin Tommy Wrong. The Naas result on Friday began a successful weekend for t h e D o y l e f a m i l y a s Pa t ’s daughter Susie was reunited with David Christie’s Ramillies at Turtulla on Sunday. Wide-margin winners of a similar ladies’ open at Moig South in November, their latest victory together was a fifth in the saddle this season for Doyle and she remains at the top of the ladies’ table. It has been a particularly successful campaign for the 2022 champion, who has now
finished placed in all bar two of her 12 rides between the flags this season.
Collins hits the back of the net at last
Matt Collins will have been pleased to see his Meetmeat thepillar cross the line in front in the older geldings’ maiden at Turtulla on Sunday. The East Cork handler had been enduring a frustrating run of second-place finishes with his horses before the cosy victory of the six-year-old son of Mount Nelson. Before Sunday he had hit the crossbar five times since his last success at Ballyknock in April 2022. However, all was not lost during that period as among that quintet of seconds
w a s Fa r re n G l o r y , w h o progressed to win the Grade 1 Royal Bond for Gordon Elliott at Fairyhouse in November, and was unfortunate not to have doubled his tally at the highest level when falling at the penultimate flight in the Fo r m by Nov i c e Hu rd l e at Aintree on St Stephen’s Day.
Clonmel hunter chase shows pointing’s depth
The strength across all d i v i s i o n s t h ro u g h o u t t h e autumn term could be seen in the results of last week’s hunter chase at Clonmel. The favourite Casey West just held off the late efforts of Dromleigh to continue a fine season for Philip Rothwell and, i n d o i n g s o, s e c u r e d h i s
qualification for the Aintree Foxhunters’ this season. That narrow success was a first in the career of the eighty e a r- o l d , w h o h a d b e e n forced to settle for the runner-up spot in each of his two outings in older maiden company during the autumn campaign. His most recent points defeat had come at Lingstown when he was followed across the line by Pulse Of Camelot and, with just three lengths separating them, the form of that contest in Wexford stood up when transferred into the hunterchase division as Pulse Of Camelot outran his 33-1 starting price to finish just a length and three-quarters behind Casey West in third.

‘He’s in great form’ – classy Ramillies lands second easy victory for Doyle FOR the s e cond time this season the former champion female rider Susie Doyle teamed up with Ramillies as the pair repeated their widemargin Moig South victory from November in the Shanaville Stables and Nicholastown Stud ladies open. Beaten just over 11 lengths in a top-class running of the St Stephen’s Day hunter chase at Down Royal, the nine-year-old slotted back into the pointing fields with a comfortable eightlength defeat of Henr y de Bromhead’s Somptueux. “That was a lovely run, Susie gave him a great ride and is getting on very well with him,” said Chloe Watson, representing handler David Christie, who was on duty at Punchestown. “He’s a good horse and is in great form.” Two further second-placed finishes on the card for Doyle ensured that Rob James was the only rider to leave the Tipperary venue with more than one victory. The Wexford rider opened his account on a horse he trains when Old Tom Morris made a winning debut in the Meadowview Stables five-year-old geldings’ maiden. A €75,000 purchase from the 2022 Tattersalls Ireland Derby sale, he showed a smart turn of foot as he came from off the pace to beat the previously placed Millforce by two and a half lengths. “This is a lovely horse,” James said. “He has a big engine, loads of speed and has the makings of a nice horse for the track.” It was Tipperary handler Harry Kelly who completed the James double when Now So Jake took advantage of the drop in class in the Hotel Minella and Harney’s Final Furlong adjacent maiden. The John Palmer-ownedand-bred six-year-old had his task simplified by the fourthlast fence departure of the favourite D’Jo Dela Barriere, which left him to return eight lengths clear of the Lisronagh third Cicero Grimes. Wise Move was one of two s o ns of Sh iroc c o t o e nj oy success in the pointing fields
Star performance
Ramillies was winning at this venue for a second time this season and dominated on his return to the pointing fields
last weekend as he doubled his tally for the campaign in the Susan Archdeacon Town and County Interiors and Dalton Transport winner-of-one. The six-year-old had opened his account on his stable debut at Tattersalls in October when getting the better of I Masked Du Potier, and it was again that French-bred runner who chased him home. Chris O’Donovan, son of winning handler John, sent the bay straight to the front and he was never headed in recording a three-length success. “This is a grand fun horse,” O’Donovan snr said. “He can be his own worst enemy as he can be too keen, which is why he had the hood on today. “Hopefully, he can pick up another winners’ race and we might even look at a maiden hunter chase for him in time.” Hollow Rodger had been forced to settle for the runner-up spot in last year’s running of the David Harry Kelly mares’ maiden but she deservedly went one place better 12 months on for David O’Brien. Absent since finishing placed at Comea last February, the Beat Hollow six-year-old was six lengths too good for Carroll’s Pride and is now likely bound for the racecourse. Me e t m ea tt h e p i l l a r ha d finished second in each of his l a s t t w o o u t i n g s, a n d h i s consistency was rewarded in the Clonmel Harries Point-toPoint Committee and INHSC older geldings’ maiden. Another to race prominently, the Matt Collins-trained Mount Nelson gelding – who is out of a Pasternak mare who Donnchadh Doyle saddled to win at Tyrella – always travelled strongly under James Murphy. At the line he had a length and a half to spare over Younowhatimean, despite hanging left on the run-in.

MUSKERRY AT AGHABULLOGUE SUNDAY Pictures: HEALY RACING
‘We’ll let her enjoy herself in points’ – crushing 35-length debut win for Aleish Lass THE Michael Winters-trained Aleish Lass obliterated the opposition on her first points outing in the D Dennehy & Family five- and six-year-old mares’ maiden. The only one of the 14 runners with previous hurdling experience, with her best effort coming when eighth of 16 in a Clonmel maiden hurdle over two and a half miles in October, the Vendangeur mare was held up well off the pace by talented 5lb claimer Andy Burke Ott as newcomer Dear Orla and last month’s Boulta runner-up Gogo Bagatelle were responsible for the generous pace. The winning five-year-old made smooth progress after the fourth-last and powered to the front two out. It was all plain sailing thereafter as the 91-rated hurdler scorched clear to beat Dear Orla by 35 lengths. “We’ll let her enjoy herself in points and she’ll now go for the mares’ winners’ race at Knockanard next month,” said Winters, who won this race with subsequent six-time track winner For Bill in 2008. The Ellmarie Holden-trained Hitak supplemented his recent success over Winged Leader at Dromahane by landing the Brookfield L eisure Centre novice riders’ open. The seven-year-old challenged Joy Of Life with three fences remaining and got on top approaching the last under Paddy Cody, who also steered him to success in a Tattersalls older horses maiden in early December, before beating King Alex by a widening ten lengths in the colours of his absent handler’s father Paul Holden. Eighteen-year-old Cody, who rides out with Joseph O’Brien, said: “He didn’t really like the ground, but he came alive when I set him alight on the last circuit and his ability got him through. He’s a real nice horse.” Darragh Allen was the only rider to partner a double, the Araglen native bringing up his second win on another ex-handicap hurdler in Native Song in the W&M Kiely sixyear-old-and-upwards mares’ maiden. The Paul Kiely-trained Na t i v e S o n g , a n 8 3 - r a t e d hurdler whose previous best effort came when finishing

eighth of 17 in a Cork maiden hurdle last August, made all the running on her first points outing. She was clearly containing Sapporo Tower when Barry O’Neill’s mount, who was six lengths adrift in second, crashed out at the final fence. Cappagh-bas e d handler Kiely indicated that Native Song, owned and bred by Mark Walsh from outside New Ross, could contest a hunter chase later in the season. Allen initiated his brace on the Robert Moloney-trained Driscolls Hill in the Tattersalls NH five-year-old geldings’ maiden. Driscolls Hill, who was lying third when unseating at the final fence on his initial outing in the Dromahane race won by If You Let Me last April, disputed the running with Whatcha gotder until going for home from two out.
The winning son of Ocovango, a 2022 Goffs Land Rover sale graduate who hails from the same family as Galmoy and Youlneverwalk alone, returned with three and a half lengths to spare over Wings On Wheels in the colours of Ballinadee-based Dan Lordan. Eddie Roche, a 24-year-old Castletownroche native, exper ienced a never to be forgotten afternoon by riding his first winner on Farmers Future for his boss Marie Harding in the Dan Donovan & Co six-yearold-and-upwards geldings’ maiden. T h e t o w e r i n g Fa r m e r s Future, representing Roche’s sister Niamh, led before the last to account for Arctic Skua by four and a half lengths. Harding departed with a double after sending out Saffron Hill to collect the All Plast Engineering winners-oftwo. The seven-year-old Saffron Hill, owned and bred by Declan O’Keeffe from Doneraile, stayed on from off the pace to lead inside the final 50 yards for Eoin O’Brien to snuff out odds-on favourite Beau’s Candle.
Hitak, under 18-year-old Paddy Cody, followed up his recent success at Dromahane in the novice riders’ open

ENTRIES have a reference number to the horse’s last run, form figures (latest on right), owner, handler and exclusive rating (same scale as rules RPR). For penalised horses we suggest deducting half a point per pound (penalties not confirmed until race-day). Irish point-to-point entries are ordered as follows: 1 Horses whose owner has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) owner, (b) horse. 2 Horses whose handler has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) handler, (b) horse. 3 Remaining horses, ordered alphabetically. Abbreviations: B-brought down; b-baulked; C-carried out; d-disqualified; F-fell; P-pulled up; R-ran out; r-refused; S-slipped up; U-unseated rider.
