Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point
Act Of Authority a smart recruit from Holden’s influential nursery
T
HE Goffs UK sale at Aintree on April 7 is the next big date in the calendar for agents and trainers aiming to stock up on young talent from the pointto-point field. We saw a lot of quality at the Tattersalls Cheltenham sale on St Patrick’s Day, and there was plenty more on display in the four-year-old maidens at the weekend. I rode Act Of Authority to win at Lisronagh on Saturday, and was impressed by this Authorized gelding who is trained by Ellmarie Holden, producer of two of this season’s top novice hurdlers, the Ballymore winner Sir Gerhard and the Supreme Novices’ runner-up Jonbon. What I really like about this fellow is his speed. I can see him making a Graded hurdler at 2m, and wouldn’t be surprised if he was good enough to win over 1m4f on the Flat, so to win a 3m maiden point in such good style is a sign of all-round quality. Paul Holden and Michael Shefflin paid €145,000 for him at last year’s Land Rover sale. His dam Leah Claire was a really tough racemare who won nine of her 59 races and was placed 20 times. She was versatile, a six-time winner and Listed-placed on turf, and also successful on the allweather at Dundalk and over hurdles. Her dam Kate Emily was also a tough dual-purpose mare for Leah Claire’s breeder Frank McNulty. Saturday’s Portrush card also saw a promising four-year-old win at the first attempt. There were good reports about Pat Turley-trained King Of Kingsfield, and he was a strong favourite. Declan Lavery sent him straight into the lead and he was already in complete control when his nearest rival fell at the last, leaving him a distance clear of the runnerup. His dam Passion Planet has a Flat pedigree which is full of stamina. She is a half-sister to two Group 2-winning stayers, Hughie Morrison’s Nearly Caught and Dermot Weld’s Pale Mimosa. Turley bought her as a broodmare some years ago after she had won on the Flat for John McConnell, and now has a lovely prospect thanks to her mating with Grange Stud stallion Vadamos. broodmare prospect to back up the impact of her debut win. Whether it was a question of pedigree or performance or a good mixture of both, there was a lot of young talent on display at the five weekend meetings, and we can expect to see more of the same in the last few months of the season.
Stalwarts among winners at popular Ballynoe fixture

category is spread widely this season. It’s not a case of just a few top stables dominating. Colin Motherway got in on the act with Encanto Bruno, who won at Ballynoe under James Hannon, Sam Curling’s Presenting gelding Townhill carried Wilson Dennison’s colours to land an eventful contest at Loughrea, and Harley Dunne rode his own Walk In the Park
‘Holden produced two of this season’s top novice hurdlers, Sir Gerhard and Jonbon’
filly Mel Monroe to a front-running win in the mares’ maiden at Monksgrange. Mention of Mel Monroe brings us back to the Holden family, since her unraced dam Laciarash is a halfsister to Abolitionist who helped to put Ellmarie on the training map by winning the Leinster National at Naas. That was in 2017, and it’s amazing now when you look at the result and see he was ridden by a 3lb claimer called Rachael Blackmore. That was one of the first big-race wins for Rachael, who later rode Abolitionist to take third behind Our Duke in the Irish Grand National. Laciarash, by Stowaway out of a Roselier mare, is also a half-sister to
Askanna, a talented mare for Colin Bowe, winning seven races on the track, including a Grade 2 novice hurdle and a Grade 3 mares’ chase having started her career with two point-to-points wins. Askanna is the dam of the Willie Mullins-trained Minella Cocooner, who won the 2m6f Grade 1 novice hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival and has since finished second to his stablemate The Nice Guy in the Albert Bartlett. There is great variety in the pedigrees you come across in pointto-points these days. Of all the fouryear-old winners last weekend, Mel Monroe has the most traditional jumping background, and you’ll see familiar names on her page, including the likes of Jim Dreaper’s top-class chaser Merry Gale and Henrietta Knight’s Racing Demon. When she goes to the sales, she will have value as a long-term
The Ballynoe meeting featured the Gain Mares Final. This is one of the most popular days in the calendar. The organisers always put on a good show and Sunday’s fixture attracted a huge crowd who enjoyed a great atmosphere. Kym Eyre, a daughter of Mahler, was favourite for the final on the strength of her debut win at Kildorrery. By the final fence the race had developed into a battle between two more experienced mares, Ballyarthur winner Queshi Bridge and Ballycahane winner Koyote. Queshi Bridge held a narrow lead, only to fall, leaving Koyote to beat the staying-on Fiery Brown. Koyote completed a double for handler Terence Leonard and rider Mikey O’Connor who had taken the previous mares’ maiden with Country Kitten. The Leonard family has a long tradition of involvement with hunting and point-to-pointing, and Mikey has been riding as long as I’ve been. At the end of last season he became only the seventh person in Irish point-to-point history to ride 400 winners, reaching the landmark on subsequent track winner Lily Of Dromard at Grennan. He has overtaken the legendary Willie Rooney (401) and is now within ten of Enda Bolger’s tally of 413. Darragh Allen went one better than Mikey by riding a treble on the Ballynoe card, two of them for trainer Terence O’Brien and the other on Macs Legend for Gerry Kelliher in the open. It’s great to see the 14-year-old Macs Legend still enjoying life. This was his ninth win in points, and he’s also won three hunter chases. He’s a credit to his trainer, who has done great work on behalf of the Irish Point-to-Point Handlers’ Association in recent years.

TALENT SPOTTER Gary Murphy on how he is rapidly growing his career as a trainer
I
T WAS great to get my first winner in a fouryear-old maiden with Affordale Fury in Ballycahane at the beginning of the month. I sent out my first runner at Moira in the autumn, so I haven’t had to wait long as he was only my seventh runner. I had a great career in the saddle and a particularly good association with Mick and Ashleigh Murphy, which has been going for about 12 or 13 years now. It was by pure chance that I met Mick. I was looking for a house and he had one to rent. When I moved into it I was still riding out elsewhere but as he got busier he asked me to work with him and I’m still there now. Mick and Ashleigh have been brilliant to me all my life, even when I was race-riding. No matter how many mistakes I made they kept putting me back up. We have had great days together over the years. One that really stands out was when I rode Frozen Flame to
‘I came to a crossroads in life when I realised you can’t ride out forever’ finish second in a four-yearold maiden around Ballinaboola. Mick and I owned him and he was the first big horse I had part-owned who sold very well. I actually bought a house out of him. That was a big day for me and I actually had a good bit of luck at Ballinaboola, which is one of my local tracks. I rode a double around there in the latter years of my riding. It was at a time when I knew I was going to be calling time on my career, so I got a great bit of craic out of that. In the end, it just got to the stage where I said enough was enough. There were a lot better, younger lads coming through and I had done my stint. After I’d stopped race-riding
I came to a crossroads in life when I realised you can’t ride out forever. I’m 32 now so I had to decide whether to go out training or get an office job. I said I’d take the chance to train and last summer I got chatting to Francis Whelan, who owns the place I’m training out of now at Foulksmills, County Wexford. He lives five minutes from Mick’s, so I’ve known him for a good few years and have ridden a few horses for
him when I was racing. The timing couldn’t have been better because I was looking for somewhere and he was looking for someone to come in. We [wife Cassie and daughter Robyn, left] have 20 stables, a walker, paddocks, lunge arena, loose school, and we put in a two-and-ahalf furlong circular gallop with heavy sand. There are also some very good facilities around. Billy Bates has a good gallop and I use
Martina Doran’s hill gallop too. I bought Affordale Fury at the sales last summer with Darragh Berry, who is a good friend of mine and clerk of the course at Lingstown. Affordale Fury was only an €8,000 store but he was a nicelooking horse and just maybe lacked a step. All along, though, he had shown us he had some talent. We did one of his last pieces of work around Maurice Day’s gallop, and it was a very good piece of work. Even after seeing that we went to Ballycahane hopeful rather than confident because with these four-year-olds you never know. All along he had been working with Ya Know Yaseff, so when Affordale Fury won his four-year-old maiden we

thought Ya Know Yaseff would put up a big performance and it was great to get her win first time out in Ballyragget. Francis bred her which made it that bit more special and she is a lovely filly who will go to the sales now. I have a dozen horses riding out at the moment, with a couple more showing a lot of potential that I’m looking forward to running. You would always aim to take more horses. That does mean more stress, but it is definitely something I would like if we could get up to 25 or 30 horses. The facilities here are top class and Francis is behind me 100 per cent, which makes a big difference. GARY MURPHY WAS TALKING TO EOGHAIN WARD

Fairyhouse next after comfortable victory for Vaucelet AFTER the agonising defeat of Winged Leader at the Cheltenham Festival earlier this month, his owners John Hegarty and Jennifer O’Kane enjoyed some deserved compensation at their local fixture when Vaucelet was an i m p re s s i v e w i n n e r o f t h e Kelly’s Portrush open. In front of a large crowd, the seven-year-old never gave his supporters a moment’s worry. Barry O’Neill moved the 1-3 f av ou r i t e t h rou g h t o l e a d approaching the home bend before landing their second victory of the season at the seaside venue on the north coast, accounting for Nick Lost by eight lengths. “It’s nice to get him out,” handler David Christie said. “His last run was in really bottomless ground at Down Royal and he hates that. “He wouldn’t have been in love with that watered ground today but we knew we had to get him out if we were going to run him in the hunter chase at Fairyhouse at their Easter meeting. I would say that could be his next target.” That victory was the highlight of a somewhat frustrating afternoon for the reigning champion jockey, as the Wexford native was forced to settle for the runner-up spot in division one of the Gormley’s Pharmacy & Tattersalls NH five-year-old geldings’ maiden on Gordon Elliott’s Ellis Boyd Redding. A €40,000 purchase at the sponsor’s Derby Sale in 2020 as a brother to the Grand Annual runner-up Andy Dufresne, the Doyen gelding lost his chance with a serious blunder at the penultimate fence. From there he was always playing second fiddle to Harjo, who came out on top by seven lengths for the Larne b r o t h e r s, B e n a n d S t u a r t Crawford. The Saddler Maker gelding bounced back from a noncompletion at Borris House before Christmas when the stable’s runners were out of form to beat the newcomer Roar Of Approval by a shorthead under Cormac Abernethy. Patrick Turley-trained King Of Kingsfield created a big impression on his debut by winning the Dennison Commercials four-year-old maiden by a distance. A second winner in the age group this season from the first crop of runners for Grange Stud resident Vadamos, the well-backed bay posted an exhibition of jumping from the front as Declan Lavery guided him to defeat fellow newcomer Ballymackie by a distance. Sporting the colours of the winning handler’s wife Mary, the well-backed bay was a ninth winner of the season for Downpatrick rider Lavery. There was a similar family success with the other widemargin winner on the card, as Winnie Woodnutt took the Cunningham Covers mares’ maiden in the hands of Ben Harvey having been owned, trained and bred by the winning rider’s father William. Out of a half-sister to the 2016 Aintree Grand National third Vics Canvas, the Kalanisi mare came from off the pace to avenge her mid-race fall at Tyrella on her recent return to the pointing fields by beating Dame De Fortune by a distance. It was a much closer affair in the Royal Court Hotel winnersof-two, as Beyond Redemption took advantage of a final-fence blunder from Drumlee Castle to make a winning return from a mid-season break under Georgie Benson. T h e e i g h t- y e a r- o l d h a d finished third in the Bishopscourt Cup at last season’s Punchestown festival, and that race is likely to be on the agenda for him again.

The Cheltenham native, who was posting a third points success, suggested her Gold Well gelding would either run in another point-to-point or be aimed at a hunter chase. Prince De Juilley developed a lovely rhythm and the Bellharbour fourth had just gone to the front when throwing a fabulous leap two out. He soon held a commanding advantage, but that was eroded from the final fence as he prevailed by just a head from the staying-on Dexterity with Alpha Steed just a further neck away in third in a race that saw a little under six lengths cover the first six home. “He had a lovely run in Bellharbour where he was just a little green,” Staunton said of the Honolulu-sired winner, a half-brother to Listed French winning hurdler Princio De Juilley. “He should improve again and he was bought by Eoin Mahon at the Land Rover sale as a three-year-old.” Liz Lalor gave it a good go from the front on Le Feline in the JOL Bloodstock ladies’ open. Out of a half-sister to Askanna, a double Graded winner for the local yard of Colin Bowe, the Walk In The Park mare was making a timely debut. Her ten-length defeat of Tom Byrne’s Lets Go To Vegas came after Minella Cocooner had added a Grade 1 success to the family’s page at the Dublin Racing Festival last month. “She’s very good,” Dunne said of the bay that he also owns and trains. “She did everything extremely well. D e c e mb e r 2 0 2 0 , I k ’s Ma n picked up the running five out and held a one-length advantage over Can’t Beat History when Jonathan Sweeney’s representative fell at the second-last. Ik’s Man returned with eight lengths to spare over Dragon Rock and the winning son of Wa l k I n T h e Pa r k i s n o w bumper bound. James Hannon had his first success for Colin Motherway on Encanto Bruno in the Goffs UK Aintree Sale four-year-old maiden. The Mahler-sired newcomer made smooth progress before three out and with the leader Cato Capone making a mistake at the last, he mastered Sean Doyle’s charge on the flat to w in by two lengths in the colours of the winning handler’s wife Linda.

GALWAY BLAZERS AT LOUGHREA SUNDAY
Eoghain Ward
impresses A weekend of winning Harjo for Wilson and Opportunity for O’Shea Crawford team TWENTY-FOUR hours after riding his first UAE Group 1 winner on Switzerland on the D u b a i Wo r l d Cu p c a rd a t Meydan, Tadhg O’Shea was among the Loughrea winners with Grey Opportunity. The nine-time UAE champion jockey owns the Kingston Hill mare in partnership with his brother-in-law Andy Pierce and she made the best possible start to her career when showing a great attitude to land the ITBA mares’ maiden. Having always been to the front under Sean Staples, the half-sister to five-time winner Stormy Tale fought off Emmet Mullins’ Time Was by a shorthead. “This is a gorgeous big mare,” Pierce said. “We felt she would take plenty of beating coming here as she’d been going well at home. She’ll be sold now.” That narrow victory initiated a double for the in-form Duncormick rider, who had also been among the winners at Belclare a week earlier, as he then teamed up with Sean Doyle’s The Forge Hill in the Galway Races mares’ open. Last s eas on’s champi on m a re h a d n o t e n j o y e d a s productive a campaign this term, however the eight-yearold recorded her first victory in ten months when she denied the three-time winner Sofias Castle by half a length. Pa King was the other rider to enjoy a double, claiming the d a y ’s o p e n i n g t w o r a c e s, beginning with Sam Curlingtrained Townhill in an incident-packed Goffs UK Aintree Sale four-year-old maiden. Four of the seven runners either fell or parted company with their riders, however the
Debutant Grey Opportunity and Sean Staples take the last to set up a close finish with Time Was
Star performance
Townhill had looked to be getting the better of the argument with Unspeakable when that rival exited at the last
Presenting gelding was able to avoid all that drama to beat the only other finisher, Chancellorstown, by 20 lengths. Victory ensured he became the third horse to carry the silks of Wilson Dennison to success at the weekend after the

victories of Abbeyhill and Grave La Klass at Portrush. He is now likely to be offered for sale, as will King’s other winner on the card, Kamsinas who made his debut in the Tattersalls NH & Westport Equipment five- and six-year-old geldings’ maiden. Sporting the silks of breeze-up consignor Mick Murphy, the French-bred got the better of a titanic battle w i t h E l l m a r i e H o l d e n ’s Winchmore Hill by a neck, to provide the Annshoon Studbased Kamsin w ith a first victory in the point-to-point sphere. Westmeath handler Heather Kiernan has a busy week in store as she is the fixture secretary for this Sunday’s point-to-point at CastletownGeoghegan, and she kicked the week off in style when she saddled Cappajune Lady to claim the Roveagh Lodge Stud winner-of-one. The Kalanisi mare was under new ownership having been bought by British-based Mark Davies since winning her maiden at Turtulla in January, and she showed her rivals a clean pair of heels when taking control along the back straight to dismiss Heydour by five lengths.
“That was a mighty performance,” Kiernan said. “Tommy Geoghegan was very good on her. He knew the track would suit her well and judged it to perfection; they get on very well together. We’ll have a look at a winners-of-two or a mares’ open next for her.” A large contingent of the Costello family were among the crowd in attendance and, after having had to settle for the runner-up spot in the winners’ contest with Heydour, they enjoyed better fortunes when Future Benefits stepped up from finishing fourth at Belclare seven days earlier to run out a commanding winner of the Willie Leahy Memorial adjacent maiden. Run in honour of the fixture’s late landowner, whose son Declan had taken over his customary role of ringing the bell in the parade ring for j o c k e y s t o m o u n t , Fu t u re Benefits was a fitting winner of the race given the Costello family’s history with pointing in the region. Th e 1 2 - l e ng t h d e f eat o f Lights Are Green provided Laura Costello with her second success of the season and her grandmother Josephine was on hand to accept the winning trophy.
STUART CRAWFORD has been making waves under rules this season, reaping the rewards of a link up with owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede. Last month’s Dublin Racing Festival winner Lily Du Berlais was his first Graded success in almost seven years, but in that time he has made sure his presence in the pointing sphere has remained as strong as ever. That has been evident by three noteworthy five-year-old maidens his Larne stable has won in recent weeks. The eyecatching victory of Coco Masterpiece at Nenagh was a further sign of his partnership w ith Munir and Souede in whose double-green colours the French-bred runs. Their presence is a further endorsement for the point-topoint nursery as they have become the latest established track owners to introduce a number of their young horses via the pointing fields. Crawford’s latest impressive winner was Harjo at Portrush. The son of Yeats is owned by longstanding supporter of the sport Roy Wilson, with Harjo following in the footsteps of The Very Man and General Principle by winning a maiden point for the pair. The latter, a son of Gold Well, went on to achieve Irish National success for Gordon Elliott more than three years after he won a point-to-point on his debut at Kirkistown.
Hold the front page Liz
Liz Lalor was denied a 112th career success in the pointing field when La Feline was forced to settle for second in the feature mares’ open at Lisronagh last Saturday but her record-breaking 110th victory at Comea last month was celebrated again with a presentation at her local fixture. Davy Russell, the former dual top under-21 point-topoint rider and three-time
southern champion, was on hand to make the presentation to the Clonmel native. To g e t h e r w i t h D e r e k O’Connor, the sport’s most successful rider, and regional secretary Frankie Ward, they presented Lalor with a framed copy of the front page of the Racing Post point-to-point supplement which was published after she became the leading female rider in the point-to-point sphere here, alongside a bouquet of flowers and a large cake produced by John Nallen’s Hotel Minella.
Tracks praised for proactive watering
The clocks had not yet turned back an hour for the spring solstice when hunt committees in many parts of the country were already having to water courses in a clear sign of the changing seasons. In advance of last weekend’s racing, INHSC track inspections reported watering at Portrush, Ballynoe and Monksgrange to maintain the ground, and committees have to be given credit for taking a proactive approach to ensure the best conditions possible are produced on race day. There is an additional financial impact on committees which have to begin irrigating tracks artificially and, with nine weekends of the season remaining, organisers with fixtures to come will be hoping for rainfall in coming weeks to assist their efforts. Sunday’s Ballynoe fixture was also unusual for producing an average race time of under six minutes for the card – the only fixture this season to record such an instance. Five of the six races on the card clocked a time under the six-minute barrier resulting in the average time coming in a full minute faster than the average time of the six races at Loughrea.
Harjo was an impressive winner for Stuart Crawford at Portrush
