DEREK O’CONNOR R STRAIGHT TO THE POIN NT

Eaglehill primed for the track after impressive Kirkistown show G ROUND conditions were excellent at Kirkistown on Saturday and it was a nice change to race on a lovely surface at a track that is usually quite testing at this time of the year. Nobody could have any complaints and the state of the ground contributed to lively performances from a couple of promising young horses. I rode Eaglehill to win the first division of the four-yearold maiden for Wilson Dennison and Colin McKeever. He jumped well and gave me the impression he’s more or less ready to go straight to the track. He’s taken time to mature, but Colin has been patient and that’s paying off now. I remember he was still backward when I rode him at Largy in the spring and he’s made a lot of progress even in the short time since Loughrea in the middle of last month. The second division produced another good winner in the shape of newcomer Allbarone, a September Storm gelding trained by Donnchadh Doyle and ridden by Rob James. He’s typical of the sort Donnchadh produces and has the makings of a staying chaser. He was a €24,000 Landrover purchase and that looks good value now.

Best wishes to Larry O’Carroll

The Echo Boy, winner of a maiden at Loughanmore two weeks ago, looked progressive

in making all under Larry O’Carroll to land the winner of one for Dermot McLoughlin, beating Lisronagh maiden winner Sidetracked. Larry, who began to make a real impact by riding eight winners and a lot of placed horses last season, is going to take a break from point-topoints to concentrate on family farming commitments. I’m sure it was a difficult decision for him and he’ll be missed from the scene. Let’s hope some time in the

future he may be in a position to find the right balance between these two important parts of his life and resume riding in points.

Four-year-old double for the Hyde family

Rathcannon on Sunday provided what I believe to be the safest ground we have raced on all season. The track was really well prepared and a lot of work had gone into it, so the committee deserves credit.

aiden at ing town

The four-year-old maiden was divided but both were won in the colours of the Hyde family for different trainers. I rode the Sam Curlingtrained Dundrum Wood in the first division and really liked this Flemensfirth gelding, who was well fancied on the strength of a good introduction at Dromahane in the spring. His dam won two of three chase starts at around two miles for Tim Vaughan and is from the family of Jodami, so there’s obviously a clear

mixture of speed and stamina in the pedigree. Enda Bolger trained the other Hyde winner, Saint Benedict, who quickened away from my mount, the Fran Flood-trained Happygolucky, to score by four lengths under Ray Barron. The winner is by Milan and should be popular at the sales as he’s a half-brother to J’y Vole, who had her biggest moment when beating Big eb in the Grade 1 Dr PJ Moriarty Chase for Willie Mullins. I’ve had three open wins on Longhouse Music for Sam Curling this season, but had to sit it out this time because the mares’ open was confined to novice riders. That’s not a bad thing as young riders can get a lot of benefit from riding experienced performers who jump well. Eoin Mahon had the mount, and the daughter of Gamut made it four from four this season, and six wins in 2018, with a good performance to beat Eugene O’Sullivan’s hunter chase winner Wilcosdiana by eight lengths. Declan Queally landed a training double when riding Gaye Breeze to victory in his mother’s colours in the winner of two, but allowed Roger Quinlan to keep the ride on Givemylovetorose in the mares’ maiden. Declan was injured when the daughter of Westerner made her debut at Lisronagh and Roger partnered her to finish a promising second. A lot of lads would have wanted to reclaim the ride for

themselves, so full marks to Declan for his loyalty in giving Roger the opportunity on the odds-on favourite.

Top rider making his mark as trainer

I was delighted to hear Colin Motherway had trained the winner of a four-year-old maiden at Lingstown. He was one of the best riders around for a long time and rode 212 winners in points. His Mahler gelding Chazza impressed a lot of people in winning at the third attempt. As we all know the four-yearold maidens continue to be very hotly contested, and to get established a trainer needs to win these races. Chazza should attract attention at the sales since he’s a half-brother to Westland Row, who has won three races over hurdles for Gordon Elliott. He’s out of a Presenting mare who won a point-to-point and had enough speed to win a 2m2f mares’ bumper at Tipperary. The second division winner Shishkin, ridden by Rob James for Virginia Considine, also looks promising. The season before last Virginia produced a lovely type in Royal Rendezvous, who has now won two of his three bumper starts for Willie Mullins. Shishkin is by Don Cossack’s sire Sholokhov, a stallion I have a high opinion of. I’ve been impressed by quite a few of his youngsters in my travels around the country lately.

O’Connor nominated for HRI prize after Edwulf’s Gold Cup success THE 11 TIME CHAMPION pointto-point rider Derek O’Connor is one of six riders to feature among the nominees for the Ride of the Year category at the forthcoming Horse Racing Ireland Awards. O’Connor received his nomination for his perfectly timed ride on Irish point-to-point graduate Edwulf to win the Grade 1 Unibet Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown in February. The success was all the more noteworthy given where the pair found themselves just 11 months earlier, when the then eight-yearold collapsed in the home straight during the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, with concerns over whether he would ever make it back to the track. The award will be decided by public vote, so the point-to-point community can get behind the sport’s most successful rider by voting on the HRI website.

tradition within families and hunts, who turn out year after year from one generation to the next, the sport would be in a much worse place.

Anseanachai Cliste poised for return

A former champion point-topointer looks poised to make his return between the flags, with Anseanachai Cliste featuring among the 3 horses to receive a hunter certificate last week. The Bach gelding clinched the 201 -1 title af ter seven consecutive victories and was due to take his chance in t he Cheltenham Foxhunters, before being dramatically withdrawn by the stewards on the day. After a 20-month spell under rules, in which he won the 201 Ulster National at Downpatrick, the 10-year-old is now under the care of James Lambe and owned by Daire McConville, the son of his former handler Stephen. McConville was seen to good effect in the saddle last season w h e n w i n n i n g f i ve r a c e s , including a notable treble at his local Farmaclaffley fixture, and will no doubt be hoping for some good days this season with the former champion.

Open division looks stronger than ever

Anseanachai Cliste is not the only notable name to be certified in recent weeks with Alelchi Inois another addition to ranks. His trainer Willie Mullins regularly moves his former leading lights into the open and hunter chase divisions towards the end of their careers, and his ten-year-old will follow in the footsteps of Quel Esprit, Boston Bob, On His Own, Equus Maximus and Marasonnien. For the bulk of them, their time between the flags was brief and it will be interesting to see what path lies ahead for the Luke McMahon-owned French-bred gelding, who could make his open debut this weekend. The 11-time winner features among a particularly high-class

dwulf and Derek

onnor efore winning the Grade

entry for the open lightweight at Corbeagh House on Sunday, which also includes Enda Bolger’s Stand Up And Fight and Kr uzhlinin, two impressive winners from recent weeks. Alongside Sunday’s Corbeagh House race, the rescheduled Boulta fixture on December 1 th is the only other open lightweight this side of Christmas not to be restricted to novice riders and it is becoming clear these races are attracting the classier open horses at present.

IHRB job opportunities

The Irish Horse Racing Regulatory Board IHRB have a number of opportunities which may be of interest to regular point-to-point attendees, as they are seeking to add to their panel of point-topoint officials and veterinary officers for part-time roles. There are positions available as stewards’ secretaries, inspector of courses, veterinary assistants and operators for the camera positioned at the winning post. The roles could be a great opportunity for those with an interest in the sport to become more involved behind the scenes.

HEALY RACING

There was great interest in the racecard at Sunday’s point-top o i n t a t L i n g stow n a s t h e organisers Killinick Harriers reproduced a front and back cover from 1 38. The entries for the six races 80 years ago, which took place at Knockhowlin, were also reprinted in the centre of the card and included a race catering for cobs measuring 15.1 hands or under. Interestingly, the feature race on the day, the open lightweight, was worth the princely sum of 25 with an entry fee of 1. It was interesting to note how similar the list of officials were for both fixtures with family names cropping up consistently. Names such as Roche, Codd, O’Keeffe, Devereux, Cardiff and Scallan were common among the officials for both fixtures despite the 80-year gap, which highlights how the connection between the sport and the hunt has passed through various generations. This is not confined to Killinick. It is widespread across many of the long-standing fixtures on the calendar, and wit hout t his

Coastal washes his rivals away with follow-up success

COASTAL TIEP added to his burgeoning reputation in the division by claiming the JA Electrical Services Open, adding to his victory at Loughanmore a fortnight earlier. Opens at the County Down course often throw up a smart sort, such as Marito and Morning Assembly, and the six-year-old’s owners, the Jetmac Syndicate, will have high hopes for the French-bred as he came through a tough test to defeat Chosen Dream by four lengths. “We’re still learning about this horse and I think he only does what he needs to do. He’ll probably run at Down Royal at Christmas and we’ll stick to the hunter chase route,” said handler Stuart Crawford. Norman Geraghty’s Larry Looby dug deep to claim the Strangford Arms Hotel five-yearold geldings’ maiden, won in 2014 by last season’s Ir ish National winner General Principle. Having failed to fire last time at Oldcastle in the spring, the b r o t h e r t o To m K e a t i n g ’ s Ballysteen point winner Timber House began to get the better of a much-improved Destination Dylan from the final fence to prevail by three quarters of a length under Jamie Codd. “He was unlucky not to win the first day he ran as the saddle slipped at Castletown and then he wasn’t beaten far at Largy. He’s a lovely horse and if he isn’t sold he will go for a winners’ race,” said the winning trainer. A day after celebrating his 3 th birthday, Codd completed a double when teaming up with Jim Dreaper to land the concluding older geldings ’ maiden with oo Wise Man. He jumped well and did everything right. He’s owned by selling people and is sales bound now,” said Tom Dreaper, son of the winning Killsallaghan-based handler. Donnchadh Doyle picked up another four-year-old maiden in the northern region this season when llbarone matched the achievement of his dam Tippeenan Lass, a debut fouryear-old maiden winner at Kilmuckridge 14 years earlier, by t aking division two of t he Dennison Commercialssponsored four-year-old maiden. A €24,000 purchase from the 201 Land Rover sale, t he September Storm gelding headed First Earl to win by four lengths in the hands or Rob James and will now be offered at next month’s Tattersalls Cheltenham December sale. The opening division of the Dennison Commericals four-yearold maiden went the way of the sponsor Wilson Dennison’s Eaglehill. The French-bred has progressed with each run this campaign and after a promising second behind Highate Hill at Damma House, subsequently bought by Olly Mur phy for 50,000, the son of Blue Bresil comfor tably got t he

better of Tareeshar by eight lengths. “There was something wrong with him in the spring and he’s come back well. He seemed to be staying on well last time, so we made more use of him today. He will head to the sales now and should make a nice staying chaser,” said handler Colin McKeever of his third winner of the season. There was further success on the card for the McKeever family when Colin’s son Graham McKeever sent out Brophies Doll to get off the mark in the BRG Autohub five-year-old and upwards mares’ maiden. Carrying the colours of former point-to-point r ider James Jenkins, who had trained her to run in two points last spring, the six-year-old daughter of Gamut joined McKeever’s team ahead of t he autumn campaig n and improved on her second behind Angelic Moon at Loughanmore a fortnight ago to run out a sixlength winner over Largy Princess under reigning champion under21 rider Shane Fitzgerald. he Echo Boy became the third horse to run at Loughanmore earlier in the month to enjoy success at Kirkistown when he got the better of a titanic battle with Lisronagh scorer Sidetracked in the Wilsons Auctions Winner Of One. The Der mot McLoughlint r a i n e d f i v e - y e a r- o l d h a s improved significantly for the switch to McLoughlin’s County Meath yard and provided Lar O’Carroll with his third winner of the season. “My only concern was that it might be too soon since his win at Loughanmore, but Lar [O’Carroll] said he felt great and loved it out in front pinging each fence ” said McLoughlin. fence,

Saturday, November 24 Eaglehill 1 cornered particularly well around the tight bends and is a strong stayer for the future. llbarone 2 gained valuable momentum on irst Earl 88 over the final fence which saw him land running and get away quickly. He made a taking debut. Brophies Doll jumped with far greater fluency than many of her rivals and won with something in hand. Larry Looby 8 was doing all of his best work in the closing stages and stayed on strongly to win. he Echo Boy 4 set a relentless gallop from the front in an impressive performance for the grade. He can land a maiden hunter chase on his preferred ground in the spring. Coastal iep 10 was faced with a much stiffer task

than his open debut, but he always held the upper-hand and there could be more to come. oo Wise Man 85 outclassed his rivals in a weak renewal.

Lingstown

Sunday, November 25 Chazza 2 made all and once the chasing pack began to close he had plenty in reserve. Shishkin 2 followed up an eyecatching Inch debut last spring to win with plenty in hand. He looks smart. Win My Wings dug deep to win going away and can make the step into winners company. Minella Royale 2 put in one of the performances of the weekend when leaving some in-form horses behind with this wide-margin debut victory. No Hidden Charges 5 belied his age to win on his first competitive start in the banks sphere. Star Wizard 2 showed a very likeable attitude as he battled to a third career success. Kilbree Shadow was an improved performer.

Rathcannon

Sunday, November 25 Dundrum Wood 1 was a well-suppor ted odds-on favourite and always looked as though he would win. Saint Benedict 1 is a well-bred individual who began to assert from the penultimate fence and was pushed out to win with plenty in hand. Star Of Oscar 8 may have struggled under rules, but appeared to have improved significantly as he left it late. Givemylovetorose 8 was somewhat unlucky at Lisronagh but made amends with a comfortable success. Her future lies on the track. Gaye Breeze 1 was always entitled to win this weak race and could well win a number of races this season. Longhouse Music 102 was at her best here, as she lowered the colours of last season’s champion mare. She can continue to mop up these races. Oaks Empress got the better jump at the last and stayed on strongly to the line. She is beginning to deliver on her early promise.

KILLINICK AT LINGSTOWN & LIMERICK AT RATHCANNON SUNDAY PHOTOS: HEALY RACING

Wizard conjures up a strong challenge PETER FLOOD is enjoying an impressive start to the season and Star Wizard brought his tally to six in the Cooney Furlong Grain Ltd & Kilmore Potatoes winner of two at Lingstown. The seven-year-old raced in mid-division before throwing down a strong challenge at the penultimate fence under the in-form Rob James. Running in the colours of Hugh Mulvihill, t he Wizard King gelding picked up well, coming home more than three lengths in front of runner-up Blue Morpho. “This is a right horse. It’s great for Hugh as he bred him and just loves the game. He might go for a winners’ of three or possibly an open now,” said Flood. Anot her m an enjoying a cracking start to the season is James, who had earlier landed the first leg of a double on the Virginia Considine-trained Shishkin in the second division o f t h e Ta t t e r s a l l s I r e l a n d Cheltenham & Ascot Sales fouryear-old maiden. James, who lies second on 13 winners, one behind Barry O’Neill

Shishkin made much of the running and picked up smartly in the closing stages. He looks as though he could be high class under rules in the riders’ championship, was continuing the theme of the day by being up with the lead before quickening clear readily from three-out to come home eight lengths in front of Apple Rock. Shishkin, a bay gelding out of a half-sister to Voler La Vedette, cost €40,000 as a foal and looks a bright prospect. “We were confident coming here today and I would imagine he’ll head to the sales now,” said the Meath-based owner-trainer. The opening division of the Tattersalls Ireland Cheltenham & Ascot Sales four-year-old maiden, saw the Luke Murphy-ridden Chazza bounce out to make all the running before coming home five lengths clear of runner-up Top Of The Fashion. Trained by Colin Motherway, the son of Mahler was making just his third appearance, having

finished a fine fourth at Dromahane two weeks previously. The gelding is a half-brother to the smart Westland Row and owned by the Sunny South Syndicate, neighbours of the winning trainer, who said: “He is a smashing horse that has loads of ability and he jumps for fun. He will head to the sales now.” It was a day to remember for 22-year-old Conor Moore, who partnered his first winner in the Wright Insurance Brokers & Gain five-year-old mares’ maiden. Win My Wings beat Go To Court by two lengths after racing prominently throughout. The five-year-old is trained and owned by the rider’s father Denis, who said: “She dug deep and we think she is a good mare. I think she will go to the sales now.” Carrying Marie Brennan’s colours, No Hidden Charges landed his second victory in seven days when taking the Keating Horse Transport open. Having won a maiden at Tinahely the previous Sunday, this five-year-old looks to have a future over banks.

Never too far away from the lead, the son of Scorpion jumped well under Benny Walsh before getting the better of Vital Island after a protracted battle to win by six lengths. “He took to the banks well and we could go for the likes of the Ladies Cup with him now if he isn’t sold,” said the Wexford trainer. The Tower Hotel, Waterford five-year-old geldings’ maiden saw Brian Lawless partner his first winner for the John Nallen yard on Minella Royale. After taking up the running five-out, the son of Shirocco quickened well to beat Classical Daytime by 15 lengths with the rest well strung out. This well-bred five-year-old was bought for €42,000 as a foal by Nallen, who said: “He is a tough staying horse and gallops away; he will head across the water to be sold now.” The concluding Inish Pebble Company Ltd six-year-old and upwards’ maiden saw Kilbree Shadow record a wide-margin success under Tom Feeney.

Gaye breezes to easy win for Queally DECLAN QUEALLY continued to press the leaders in the handlers’ table with a double, bringing his tally this season to five winners. The opening leg of the Rathcannon brace came with Givemylovetorose in the Tim McAuliffe five-year-old and upwards mares’ maiden. Ridden by Roger Quinlan, the winning daughter of Westerner chased the leaders for much of the race before throwing down a strong challenge at the penultimate fence. From that point, the Eileen O’Mahony-owned bay quickened in good fashion to beat Lady Rococo by five lengths. “This mare is a grand staying sort that will either stay pointing or go for a bumper at Christmas,” said the winning handler. The O’Flynns Centra, Bruff winner of two race found Queally in the saddle to steer his own charge, Gaye Breeze, to an eight-length victory despite being the only maiden in the line-up. Given a patient ride, the fiveyear-old gelding made progress to dispute the advantage threeout, before picking up well to beat recent Ballinaboola winner My Forever Friend by eight lengths. Q u e a l ly s a i d : “ T h a t wa s brilliant. He was unfortunate in The Pigeons when he was carried out. He didn’t have a hard race

there and could even go for a winners next weekend.” Owner Timmy Hyde had a great day, seeing his colours carried to victory in both divisions of the Tattersalls Ireland four-year-old maiden. Sam Curling trained the winner of the first division with Dundrum Wood scoring at the second time of asking. Placed on his debut at Dromahane last spring, this son of Flemensfirth disputed the lead for much of the race under Derek O’Connor. The €28,000 store purchase picked up well from three-out to get the better of promising debutant Notre Pari by three lengths and could now be aimed at a bumper unless sold. The second division of the maiden saw rider Ray Barron carry the Hyde colours to victory on Saint Benedict, who was making his debut. Having chased the leaders throughout, the Milan gelding hit the front at the penultimate fence before staying on gamely to win by four lengths from Happy Go Lucky. Winning handler Enda Bolger said: “We couldn’t have asked for any more than that. He’s growing up all the time and beat what he had to. Timmy [Hyde] will most likely sell him now.”

D u ndr u m Wo od m ad e a favourable impression when taking the opening division of the four-year-old maiden for Sam Curling and could have a bright future under rules

Rider Eoin Mahon and trainer Curling teamed up to take the Maurice Power Solictor mares’ open for novice riders for the second time, after the Galway rider opened his account in the same race a couple of seasons ago. Longhouse Music enhanced her credentials for the champion mare award when taking her third race of the season. Never too far away from the lead, the nine-yearold daughter of Gamut eased clear in the closing stages for an impressive eight-length success over Wilcosdiana. The winning trainer, who saddled a double on the day, indicated his charge would likely remain pointing this season. Chris O’Donovan rode his second winner of the season in the Paul Leonard Construction older maiden on Oaks Empress for trainer Eamon Courtney. One of three mares in the

Gaye Breeze with jockey and trainer Declan Queally landing a winner of two at Rathcannon

line-up, the daughter of Oscar was getting off the mark at the sixth attempt, having been placed twice previously between the flags. Ridden in mid-division, the Valerie Courtney-owned six-yearold came out on top in a thrilling battle with r unner-up Jean Lecroix to win by two lengths. “This lady had a lovely first run back last time. It’s great to get this

mare back as she was off for a while. She’ll probably go for a winners’ race next,” said the County Kerry handler. Star of Oscar put his track form to good use when taking the Dave Clarkes Bar five-year-old geldings’ maiden for ownerhandler Eoin Doyle. H av i n g h i s s e c o n d s t a r t between the flags, the five-yearold was given a positive ride by

Cathal Healy before getting up in the dying strides to beat Sammy Bill by just half a length in what was the tightest finish of the day. Representative Mikey Moran said: “This horse was a bit weak last season but is coming to himself now. Cathal works for us and gave the horse a good ride; he works hard and deserves it. This lad will likely go back to the track now.”

ENTRIES have a reference number to the horse’s last run, form figures (latest on right), owner, handler and exclusive rating (same scale as rules RPR). For penalised horses we suggest deducting half a point per pound (penalties not confirmed until race-day). Irish point-to-point entries are ordered as follows: 1 Horses whose owner has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) owner, (b) horse. 2 Horses whose handler has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) handler, (b) horse. 3 Remaining horses, ordered alphabetically. Abbreviations: B-brought down; b-baulked; C-carried out; d-disqualified; F-fell; P-pulled up; R-ran out; r-refused; S-slipped up; U-unseated rider. 6 87
