Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point

Future looks bright as former pointers steal the festival show

T

HE Cheltenham Festival reflected a huge amount of credit on the Irish point-to-point scene, the highlights provided by the brilliant Honeysuckle and two of the most exciting prospects for the seasons ahead, Constitution Hill and Sir Gerhard. Bob Olinger may have been fortunate, but we all know that jumping is the name of the game. He got on the scoresheet when handed the Turners Novices’ Chase by the departure of Galopin Des Champs at the last. Handicap winners Corach Rambler, Commander Of Fleet, Global Citizen and Banbridge all started life in Irish points, and we shouldn’t forget the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle winner Love Envoi, who won a point-to-point bumper for Sean Doyle at Wexford around this time last season. On the riding front, it was good to see Shane Fitzgerald (Commander Of Fleet, Coral Cup) and Sean O’Keeffe (The Nice Guy, Albert Bartlett) among the winners. The two lads shared the Under-21 title in the 2018 season. We dominated the Festival Hunters Chase. What a fantastic finish it was, and I’m sure a lot of people had mixed feelings watching it. There’s no doubt that Billaway deserved his win, not just for the fact that he had finished second in the race twice before, but for the way he stuck to his task for Patrick Mullins after it had looked like a lost cause. At the same time, you have to feel sorry for David Christie, Barry O’Neill and everyone connected with Winged Leader, who was just grabbed on the line. It was an agonising week for the Christie stable. Ask D’Man was beaten a neck in the hunter chase on the St Patrick’s Day card at Down Royal, and Handy Headon lost by a short head at Downpatrick on Sunday. Hard to stomach but David can be very proud of Winged Leader. He is only eight, and as I mentioned in last week’s column, the trend in the Cheltenham race has favoured older horses in recent years. If all goes well, he must have a great chance of going one better in 12 months’ time. And before we leave Cheltenham for another year, it was encouraging

to see strong demand for point-topointers at the Tattersalls sale. The great news for Irish racing as a whole is that the three top lots will be returning to this country. Pat Doyle’s Ballycahane winner Kudasheva goes to Henry de Bromhead, and Gordon Elliott will train Warren Ewing’s Lisronagh winner Better Times Ahead, as well as Stellar Story, a recent winner at the new Lismore circuit at Castlelands for Donnchadh Doyle. It’s also interesting to see British point-to-point winner Kap D’Attente heading in this direction to be trained by De Bromhead. The

Coco Masterpiece impressed with speed and jumping I was at Nenagh on Saturday and rode the winner of the opening fouryear-old maiden on Loop Head for owner-trainer John Staunton. This one gave me a lot of pleasure because John is a neighbour and a lifelong friend. It was snug in the end, despite the fact that I lost my irons when the Westerner gelding made a mistake at the last. He had jumped well through the race and had plenty in reserve as a result. His dam River Mill won a bumper for Paul Nolan and is a half-sister to several useful winners, including Nolan’s 2004 Galway Hurdle winner Cloone River who also won premier handicaps on the Flat and was unbeaten in two starts

over fences. John plans to sell him at Aintree. I didn’t have to do any real work to complete a double on De Nordener for Enda Bolger in the winner-of-one race. We were left to come home alone after Camilla’s Choice fell at the second-last. It was De Nordener’s first run for Enda since joining him after his win for Tom Keating at Ballyvodock. He is set to run in the Ladies’ Cup at Punchestown, a race in which the stable has a great record. We saw a very good winner of the five-year-old maiden, Coco Masterpiece, a newcomer by Authorized, trained by Stuart Crawford and ridden by his brother Ben, who held him up at the back before producing him at the secondlast to settle the issue quickly. I was on the third Oak Creek, an Enda Bolger-trained gelding who had two previous runs, including a second behind the promising Colonel Harry at Ballyvodock in January. The form reads well on that score, but what really impressed me was his jumping and his acceleration. It was

the stand-out performance of the weekend. The four-year-old maidens continue to produce a stream of talent. Cormac Doyle and rider Jack Hendrick are enjoying a fine run of form and they combined to win the mares’ maiden at Ballyragget with Fancy Girl, a daughter of Champs Elysees with plenty of stamina in her pedigree. She was the second four-year-old winner for Champs Elysees at the weekend after the victory of John Halley’s Our Champ in an incidentpacked maiden at Ballyarthur. At Belclare, Ciaran and Aaron Murphy teamed up for an impressive first-time win with Deep Cave, a brother to JPR One, who won a novice hurdle at Taunton this year. He’s not a bad horse, although he predictably found things much too demanding as an outsider in last week’s Supreme Novices’. Deep Cave showed plenty for a horse who is still unfurnished and can build on this performance. All in all, it was another weekend which showed the strength of the current crop of youngsters.

TALENT SPOTTER Alex Harvey reveals how he is managing to juggle university and race-riding

I

GREW up surrounded by horses and racing. We always had hunters and point-to-pointers around at home and I have memories from an early age of going to Navan and places like that when my grandfather David had a runner. He would have been busy in the early 2000s when he had a horse called Schwartzhalle, who won the Flyingbolt Novices’ Chase. That was his heyday back then. I started off on ponies with the Ward Union and I competed in a couple of pony races that were held after the point-to-points in Dowth Hall and Fairyhouse a couple of years ago. I ended up winning two of the races in Dowth Hall and one in Fairyhouse. They were my first taste of racing and from there I always wanted to take out my licence. Once I turned 16 I was all about getting started to give it a proper go. I rode in three bumpers

‘It’s great to be riding for as many people as I can and on better horses’ when I was 16 for John McConnell, Declan McNamara and my grandfather, and then I went to get my point-to-point licence once I turned 17. My brother Ben was already riding in point-to-points and he started bringing me into the likes of Pat Doyle’s and Tony Martin’s for more experience, and I had my first ride in a point-to-point at Moira last season on one of our own horses, Minella On Line. I had Minella On Line and Knockiel Synge to start off on last season and they were great horses to get me going. Minella knew his job and Knockiel Synge was a good older maiden to have too. He was always bang there and you never really got a bad day with him.

He was my own to do all the work with, so I knew him inside out. I met his owner in sixth year in school. He was a homebred and they said that they would send him down to me. We went from there with him and it worked out well. Minella On Line gave me my first winner at Punchestown last May, which was special. We thought he had a right chance as he had finished second at Cork over hurdles under Ben and he was an old bus that just kept going. He galloped them into the

ground that day and I was able to get the monkey off my back quickly, thank God. It’s been a lot busier this season. I’m in my first year at Maynooth University studying business and management, and I’ve also started riding out for James and Ellen Doyle on Fridays and Saturdays. I’d always wanted to go down to Wexford. It’s the heart of point-topointing at the minute with all of the big handlers down there. Sarah Kavanagh was in John McConnell’s one day and she

was telling me that she had gone into James and told me it would be a good spot to try out. I gave them a call and they told me to come down on a Friday to school, and things went on from there – I haven’t looked back since. I had my first double on their horses at Borris House in December, which was nice to get, especially as it was on two of their four-year-olds. It is a different story riding a fouryear-old compared with an open horse, they take a lot more riding. But that is the experience I was after to improve myself. It was my main reason for trying to get into a Wexford yard. There are plenty of good rides in James’s and we are sharing all the rides between

the other lads and me, and when you get up on their horses you are never going to be too far away. My third winner this season came for Brian Hamilton in Tyrella this month on Katesbridge. Ben and I meet Brian in Moira for schooling races or go up to his place and he said I could ride whatever he had in novice races, so it’s worked out well. Things are going well. It’s great to be riding for as many people as I can and also on a better quality of horse. Horses are my passion and are probably getting a bit more priority than college, but I’m getting by and I’ll try to juggle it as best as I can. ALEX HARVEY WAS TALKING TO EOGHAIN WARD

Work with Billaway puts Come To Me on right path THE Tracey Gilmour-owned and trained Come To Me lit up this rescheduled fixture by r e t u r n i n g f ro m a l e n g t h y absence to land a bloodless success on his pointing debut in the McCarthy Insurance, Lenihan Transport & Swallow Inn open. The ten-year-old bumper and maiden hurdle winner during a lightly raced, threeseason campaign for Willie Mullins, was absent since finishing eighth to Reserve Tank in a Grade 1 novice hurdle at the Punchestown festival in May 2019. The winning French-bred developed a lovely rhythm with Maxine O’Sullivan and, having travelled well in third spot from the fifth-last, he made the best of his way home from two out to dismiss another ex-C losutton inmate in Killultagh Vic by 15 lengths. “He did a bit of work with Billaway last week and I was hoping that was a good omen,” the Borris-based Gilmour said before paying tribute to Willie and Jackie Mullins from whom

she acquired Come To Me. “He’ll stick to points if the ground stays right; he wouldn’t want it any quicker.” John Halley’s newcomer Our Champ won an eventful running of the Goffs four-yearold geldings’ maiden. The fractional leader Timmy Tuesday went the wrong side of a doll rounding the bend after two out and he carried the challenging One Big Bang with him. Our Champ, who was six lengths adrift of the front pair, was then left clear under David Kiely to beat Howaya Now by 12 lengths. “I always thought of him as a nice horse and he will now go to a sale,” owner-trainer Halley said of Our Champ, a son of Champs Elysees who is out of a half-sister to Listed chase winning mare Nolans Pride.

There was also drama in the Tattersalls NH & Radley Engineering five-year-old geldings’ maiden as the well-supported newcomer An Peann Dearg, a son of Well Chosen trained by Harry Kelly, still held a twolength advantage when falling at the final fence. Pa u l C a s h m a n ’s D i v i n e Inspiration was then left clear to come home alone in the hands of James Murphy. “He’s tough, he gallops and stays and he’ll now be sold,” Cashman said of the Malinassired Divine Inspiration, a

half-brother to Beauport who won a £50,000 handicap hurdle at Uttoxoter on Saturday and who is owned by Jane Foley in partnership with Cashman’s mother Catherine. The Michael Winters-trained mare Clounts Glory landed her third consecutive success of the season by coming home as she pleased in the Village Inn winners-of-three for regular partner Chris O’Donovan. Clounts Glory, also successful at Knockanard and Kildorrery last month, got into a lovely rhythm and she was always travelling best once taking a fractional advantage from two out. The winning daughter of Fame And Glory, owned and bred by brothers Dan and Billy Horgan from Rathmore, beat recent Lismore scorer Rosy Story by four lengths. “She’s a great jumper and loves this ground. She’ll probably now go to Cork for the ma re s’ hu nt e r c ha s e ove r Easter,” Winters said. Edmond Kent’s homebred mare Queshi Bridge earned her due reward, having finished second on two previous occasions, including at Dromahane in December, by returning to the number one slot under James Hannon in the Cotter’s Bar, Ahern’s Bar & Butcher’s Bar adjacent maiden. The patiently ridden Queshi Bridge arrived from off the pace to lead before two out and

it was apparent she had too m a n y a c e s f o r r u n n e r- u p Blooming Fortune at the final fence, with four lengths ultimately the winning margin. “She’s a mare whio hasn’t really had the rub of the green,” Kent said. “Her run at Dromahane after Christmas took a bit out of her, but James said she was really only racing for the last three furlongs here and she might go to Ballynoe n e x t Su n d ay f o r t h e Ga i n Mares’ Final.” Handler Paul Kiely and his rider brother Richie, on the mark with Glenavaddra at Lisronagh last month, combined to take the Dairygold, Gain Equine Nutrition & KDC Construction mares’ maiden with the newcomer Police Academy. The Arctic Cosmos gelding, owned by Richard McGrath, from Cappagh, took command on the flat to beat Porter In The Park by a length in the closest finish of the afternoon. McGrath, whose previous success as an owner came with the Paul Kiely-ridden Cloudy Beach at Stradbally in 2013, indicated that Police Academy would now be sold.

Eyecatching display by Coco Masterpiece

Festival reveals riches to be found in Irish pointing fields

TWENTY-FOUR hours after the disappointment of Concertista finishing fourth in the Mrs Paddy Power Mares’ Chase on the final day of the Cheltenham Festival, the double green colours of Simon Munir and Isaac Souede were carried to an eyecatching debut success by Coco Masterpiece in the Liam Buckley Car Sales fiveyear-old geldings’ maiden. Ben Crawford was full of confidence on the bay trained by his elder brother Stuart, as they picked off rivals steadily from the third-last fence. Once Crawford brought the €105,000 purchase to the front there was only going to be one result as the Authorized gelding accounted easily for the vastly more experienced Heaven Smart by four lengths. “We’ve been itching to get him out for a while,” the Larnebased trainer said. “I could have gone to the track with him but he’s a very good jumper and probably learned more doing what he did there today. “It wouldn’t do him any harm to have another run in a point-to-point, rather than pressing on to the track with him this spring.” L o ca l r i d e r Su s i e D oy l e edged her way to the front of the leaderboard in the female riders’ categor y when she notched a fifth success of the campaign courtesy of Solomn Grundy in the Connollys Red Mills ladies open. Sean Doyle’s 12-year-old was turning out just seven days after he had chased home Aloneamongmillions in the Tetretema Cup at Gowran Park, however he showed no ill effects for that swift return to a c t i o n by o u t b a t t l i n g t h e

Star performance

Coco Masterpiece is a name for the notebook after an easy victory on his debut

one-time leading hunter chaser Stand Up And Fight by a length and a half in a tactical three-runner affair. The victory was a first for the Roger Brookhous e-ow ne d Westerner gelding since last y e a r ’s J o s e p h O ’ R e i l l y Memorial at Fairyhouse, a race he is likely to take in having maintained his rider’s excellent strike-rate for the season at 50 per cent. There were better fortunes for the Stand Up And Fight connections of Enda Bolger and JP McManus in the Carey Glass winners-of-one as their representative De Nordener finished alone in a race which produced just two runners. The Ocovango gelding, who was having his first start in McManus ownership, having

recently won his maiden for Tom Keating, was left as the only horse still running when Camilla’s Choice exited at the penultimate fence while still on terms. “He’s a good horse and came well recommended off Tom Keating. We haven’t had him that long,” Bolger said. “He’ll probably have another run in a winners-of two before heading f o r t h e L a d i e s Cu p at t h e Punchestown Festival.” That victory had completed a double for Derek O’Connor, who had earlier teamed up with his neighbour John Staunton to claim the opening Tattersalls NH four-year-old auction race with Loop Head. It was not plain sailing for suppor ters of the €15,000 Westerner gelding as he dived at t h e fi na l fe n ce, t e st i ng O’Connor’s balance and skill to maintain the partnership, and although the 11-time national champion remained aboard he had to cross the line without his irons as Loop Head

overcame fellow newcomer Go West by half a length. It could have been a treble for O’Connor as he held every chance on Le Boulevardier at the last in the Millerect Ltd older geldings’ maiden, but his mount could not contain the challenge of Henry Gray, who prevailed by a head in the closest finish on the card. Just as his dam had when winning her maiden at Dromahane 15 years earlier, Henry Gray was always to the fore, and Andy Slattery’s charge made a winning debut in the hands of the Tipperar y handler’s nephew Adam Ryan. The dust had barely settled for Barr y O’Neill after his agonising defeat in the Cheltenham Open Hunters Chase the previous afternoon when he returned to the Nenagh winner ’s enclosure having st e e re d Annie Mag ic t o a comprehensive victory in the Thurles Racecourse & Gain mares’ maiden. The Wexford rider had to wait 13 years between his first and second winners for Carlow handler Aidan Fitzgerald when Moonlight Symphony was victorious at Borris House recently. However, this third success for the pair arrived rather more quickly, just 13 days after that Borris House victory, as the six-year-old stepped for ward from her Farmacaffley third to beat A g h a b u l l o g u e r u n n e r- u p Shamror Lass by ten lengths.

THE Cheltenham Festival once again proved a perfect advertisement of the riches to be found in the point-to-point sphere in Ireland. Ten festival races w ent to hors es who began their careers in the pointing nursery. Unsurprisingly, Honeysuckle was the star of the show as far as point-to-pointing exports were concerned. The star mare preserved her unbeaten record – a sequence of victories which has now risen to 16 since her debut in a four-year-old mares’ maiden – when she retained her Champion Hurdle crown. Her success came two hours after Constitution Hill had put up one of the finest perform ances by a novice hurdler for some time with a 22-length Supreme victory. Hav i n g t w o o f t h e m o s t exciting two-mile hurdlers beginning their careers by running well in Irish point-topoints illustrates the sheer variety of horses being produced by the sector.

Sales figures are on the crest of a wave

Buoyed by the strong performances on the track at Cheltenham, trade in the winner’s e n c l o su re a f t e r ra c i ng o n Thursday evening was electric. Twelve of the 22 horses catalogued with recent Irish pointto-point form were sold for six-figure prices and vendors were richly rewarded. Once again top billing went to a mare, with Kudasheva commanding the premium price tag of £370,000 after her debut success at Ballycahane for Pat Doyle. She was one of four Irish pointing mares to break the £100,000 mark.

Eoghain Ward

Gordon Elliott was responsible for purchasing the other two horses who passed £300,000 on the evening, having signed for Better Days Ahead at £350,000, and Donnchadh Doyle’s Castlelands winner Stellar Story for £310,000. T h e s a l e o f B e t t e r D ay s Ahead capped a particularly special 48 hours for his handler Warren Ewing who had been on hand to watch his former pointer Constitution Hill claim the festival’s opening race.

Idalko sale a fine result for Hendrick

Cheltenham provided mixed fortunes for Jack Hendrick. The Mayglass native missed out on his first ride at the festival when Lord Accord was scratched from the Fulke Walwyn Kim Mu i r o n T h u r s d ay d u e t o unsuitable conditions. Ho w e v e r c o m p e n s a t i o n swiftly followed in the form of the festival sale that evening when Idalko Bihoue came under the hammer. Not only had Hendrick guided the Balko gelding to a debut success at Tinahely three weeks earlier, but he also partowned the four-year-old with winning handler Cormac Doyle, ensuring the £150,000 that Willie Twiston-Davies and Jamie Sheppard paid for him was a big result for the 22-yearold. His week ended particularly well when he recorded his second double of the month at Ba l l y ra g g e t t o c o nt i nu e a red-hot streak. He continues to impress and has now ridden seven winners from his last six days of point-to-point action. EDWARD WHITAKER (RACINGPOST.COM/PHOTOS)

Dancing After Dark produces winning moves BRIAN BARRY had luck on his side when he picked up a winning spare ride on Dancing After Dark, who produced an eyecatching display to land the Leonard Group five- and sixyear-old mares’ maiden. Bred by winning handler Jack Bennett, the daughter of Mountain High was due to have been ridden by Shane Baragry as had been the case when she made her debut at Ballingarry last May. However, when the Cork rider suffered a broken collarbone on the morning of the race it was 19-year-old Barry who stepped in. Making all the running on the good-jumping six-year-old the pair raced clear of Sam Curling’s more experienced Super Dawn from the penultimate fence to win by a widening six lengths. “I feel sorry for Shane because he was supposed to ride her but he broke his collarbone this morning,” Bennett said. “We got Br ian Bar r y

teamed up with rider-turnedhandler Gary Murphy to claim the Gain Equine Nutrition five-year-old-and-upwards mares’ maiden with Ya Know Yaseff. Sporting the colours of the Turbine Syndicate, silks synonymous with the 2013 Troytown Chase winner Cootamundra, the Jet Away mare made most of the running, which allowed her to get first run on last month’s Tinahely runner-up G etabelle and beat A idan Fitzgerald’s runner by three lengths. Sean Doyle also had a double, initiated by Private

The Presenting gelding was made favourite after a promising third at Ballinaboola last time behind subsequent £180,000 purchase Captain Checkdown. The Presenting gelding put his experience to good use as he accounted for the similarly experienced Imperial Alex by a length. “He was in a very hot divide at Ballinaboola and grew in confidence after it because he had two heavy falls before that’” Doyle said. “He jumped brilliantly today and he was very good.” The Monbeg Partnership silks were back in the winner’s enclosure when Is A Real Champ provided the Wexford handler with a third winner of

the weekend after the success of Solomn Grundy at Nenagh 24 hours earlier. Stepping into open company for the first time in the John Dalton & Sons novice riders’ race, the eightyear-old faced only two rivals but, with the recent Castlelands winner A Rated among the opposition, it was no easy task. An assured round of jumping proved a notable asset for the Getaway gelding as he mastered the step up in grade by beating the odds-on favourite A Rated by a length and a half and is now aimed at a hunter chase at Cork on Easter Monday. The John Phelan & Co and John Holland older geldings’ maiden was the third maiden on the card to be won by a newcomer when Cash Book

made a winning debut for the father-and-son team of John and James Walsh. Following in the footsteps of his mother Gold Credit, who had won a Dromahane maiden in 2014 for the Walsh family, her first foal made the perfect start to his racing career by carrying the same silks to a three-length victory over Turnthelightsoff. Rock On Cowboy has plenty of catching up to do if he is to match the achievem e n t s o f h i s h a l f - s i s t e r, four-time w inner Ros e Of Coolbally, but he is heading in that direction if his performance in winning the Connollys Red Mills adjacent maiden is any guide. After finishing an encouraging fourth on his debut at Ballycahane two weeks earlier, the five-year-old took a notable

step forward to run out a fourlength winner over the now three-time placed Baldur’s Gate. The winner is the first offspring of the three-time Group winner Snow Sky to enjoy success in the pointing fields in Ireland, much to the delight of winning handler Willie Murphy, who stands the Royal Ascot winner at his Ballycurragh Stud. “Pat Doyle, who has been helping us for 40 years, owns him and it is brilliant to get a winner for him,” Murphy said. “He’ll hopefully go to the sales now or, if not, we’ll go for a bumper with him. I think he’s very good.”

always thought an awful lot of him and we’ll go for a bumper next if we don’t sell him.” Local handler Paul Gilligan claimed the race he sponsors as Didnt Ask won the adjacent maiden with a last-gasp effort. Rolling Clouds had looked set to provide Thomas Costello with his first success in the saddle when racing clear up the run-in, however Derek O’Connor galvanised Gilligan’s

newcomer who put his head in front in the last stride to win by a short head. “We told Derek to leave it late but not exactly that late!” Gilligan said. “You would love to have seen Thomas Costello get his first winner but we’ll take what we can get.”

Hurricane Highway storms home to delight Cavanagh CORMAC FARRELL unleashed an exciting sort when newcomer Hurricane Highway impressed in readily dismissing his rivals in the Goffs UK Aintree Sale fouryear-old maiden. The Malinas gelding always travelled well in second spot as Duhallow Tommy tr ied to make all. Hurricane Highway moved through for Simon Cavanagh to join issue before two out a n d t h e W e x f o r d r a i d e r, despite running noticeably green between the final two fences, stormed clear from the last to account for the promising Duhallow Tommy by ten lengths in the colours of the WSQ Syndicate from Kilkenny. Cavanagh will have gained particular satisfaction from t h i s s u c c e s s a s h i s f at h e r Richard bred Hurricane Highway. The elder Cavanagh sold as a foal the winning bay, whose granddam is a sister to Grade 2-placed chaser Kurakka. He was purchased by present connections as a twoyear-old. “He’s a horse who took a while to come to himself. He ran green here, but he was very tough,” the winning rider said of Hurricane Highway, who is now likely to be sold. T h e Ja m e s M o t h e r w a y trained newcomer Amrons Sage won a competitive r u n n i n g o f t h e Fa r m f i r s t In s u ra n c e f i v e - y e a r- o l d geldings’ maiden. Amrons Sage, whose dam is a half-sister to Nicky Henderson’s Cheltenham Festival w i n n e r B e w a re T h e B e a r, made smooth progress to lead from two out and the winning son of Sageburg asserted on the flat with Darragh Allen to dispose of Saladam by four lengths in the silks of the h a n d l e r ’s f a t h e r D a v i d Motherway. The elder Motherway, who recalled breaking his shoulder i n a fa l l w h i l e r i d i ng i n a half-bred race at this meeting 5 0 y e a r s a g o, p u r c h a s e d Amrons Sage as a three-yearold. “We thought he would run well as he’d been working well at home,” Motherway said. The former hurdler Plan B supplemented his success at Tallow last month by collecting the Sygma Automation winners-of-one under Brian Dunleavy. The Micheal Griffin-trained gelding led from the fourth fence and he was containing Nice To Meet when Mikey

O’Connor’s mount, who was four lengths adrift in second spot at the time, fell at the final fence. Plan B then returned with a distance to spare over the only other finisher Present Fair. “He got a stone bruise after winning in Tallow and I’m hoping he will improve for this run,” Griffin said of Plan B, whom he trains for his wife Kay and the winning rider’s father Liam Dunleavy. “He went a good gallop here and handled the tacky ground well. He might now go for a hunter chase at Cork over Easter.” T h e Ma i k e Ma g n u s s e n trained Crazywork De Vassy, a dual runner-up already this season, benefited from frontrunning tactics by making

v i r t u a l l y a l l u n d e r Ja m e s Hannon to w in the threerunner Collins Bros Garage Liscarroll open. Crazywork De Vassy gave a solid exhibition of fencing and, w h i l e e d g i n g l e f t- h a n d e d a p p ro a c h i n g t h e l a s t, t h e Michael McDonagh-owned dual chase winner still dismissed Meetingofthewaters by five lengths. “I’m delighted. He jumped for fun,” the German native, who rents a yard from Noel Glynn in Spancilhill, said of Crazywork De Vassy. It was a red-letter day for 24-year-old Ciaran O’Shea from Lisgoold as he partnered his first winner on the Garrett Ahern-trained General Ryan in the Exors of the late Dr RJ Sheehy older maiden for novice riders, the race that attracted the biggest field of the day with 16 runners. The recent Bandon third General Ryan thwarted Kalanisi Dream’s bid to make all by forging past on the long run home from the last to

eclipse the pacesetter by three lengths. This was O’Shea’s fifth ride and his family make up the winning O’Shea Syndicate. O’Shea rides out with Bartlemy-based handler Ahern in addition to Olivia Hall and Donie Murphy. Paul Tobin’s Well Vicky was an unlucky loser in the Topeline Burtons Kanturk fiveyear-old mares’ maiden as last month’s Tallow debut third was travelling best with a threelength advantage when falling at the last. The Richard O’Hara-trained Kilbunny Aplasia was then left clear with Luke Murphy to beat the only other finisher, Worth The Walk, by ten lengths in the same Delton Syndicate silks carried to victory by the Harry de Bromhead-trained Fissure Seal at the 1993 Cheltenham festival.
