Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point

Stand by to salute pointing flag in Dublin Festival novice hurdles

L

AST week I mentioned how some of this season’s most promising bumper horses started in point-topoints. With the Dublin Racing Festival getting close it seems a good time to look at how point-topoint graduates are doing on the novice hurdling scene. Ex-pointers have been flying the flag in Grade 1 races. First up was the Gordon Elliott-trained Farren Glory, winner of the Royal Bond at Fairyhouse. He was trained for points by Matt Collins in Cork and joined the Elliott team for £60,000 after finishing second at Turtulla in November 2022. Runner-up in the big Fairyhouse race was stablemate King Of Kingsfield, a winner at Portrush for Pat Turley. Third was Henry de Bromhead’s An Tobar, a Ballyvodock scorer for Denis Murphy. Gordon sent Farren Glory for the Grade 1 at Aintree before Christmas. He started favourite and all was going to plan until he fell at the second-last when leading and travelling strongly. That left Nicky Henderson’s Jango Baie clear to win by 2¾ lengths. Jango Baie, who was produced by Mick Goff, is a horse I’m familiar with since I trained and rode the horse who beat him in a maiden at Knockanard last February. That was No Flies On Him, who is now with Edward O’Grady and got off to a good start when winning a 28-runner maiden hurdle at Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting. Edward picked him out for JP McManus at the Derby sale in 2022, and I’m grateful they gave me such a lovely horse to work with last season when he was taking the first steps of his career. The Westerner gelding is entered for the Grade 1 novice hurdle over two miles at the Dublin Racing Festival. I’m very hopeful he’s a horse who will more than hold his own in top races. Novice hurdlers can often surprise with their rate of development. We saw one such case in the Grade 1 Lawlor’s of Naas Novice Hurdle in which Willie Mullins had four of the seven runners and won with Readin Tommy Wrong, the outsider of the group. This son of Authorized out of a mare by High Chaparral was bred by Walter Connors, a great supporter of

point-to-points, and had one run for Pat Doyle, finishing second at Belharbour around this time two years ago. He was bought by Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, and it’s good to see their massive support of the sport being rewarded.

‘Readin Tommy Wrong has gone from strength to strength and is unbeaten in four racecourse starts’

Willie likes to give plenty of time to the horses he gets from the point-topoint field and Readin Tommy Wrong didn’t make it to the track until last May when Jody Townend rode him to a bumper win at Ballinrobe. He’s gone from strength to strength and is unbeaten in four racecourse starts. Considering there’s room for improvement in his jumping, he can be given extra credit for the way he battled to beat the favourite Ile Atlantique. The Mullins novice team is as strong as ever, and one of the most exciting prospects is Ballyburn, who started with Wilson Dennison and

Colin McKeever, whose nursery has produced many top-class jumpers over the years. He won at Loughanmore in the 2022 autumn campaign and was unbeaten in two bumper starts at Punchestown last season. Gordon Elliott’s talented threetime bumper winner Firefox just got the better of him on his hurdling debut but he bolted up at Leopardstown after Christmas. He’s a lovely horse for Ronnie Bartlett, another massive supporter of Irish point-to-points. High Class Hero, winner of the WT O’Grady Memorial at Thurles on Sunday, has a similar profile to Readin Tommy Wrong. He’s also unbeaten in five starts since joining the Closutton team, a bumper, and four races over hurdles.

Winner of a maiden at Loughbrickland for Matt O’Connor Flynn in November 2021, he was sold the following month but didn’t appear again for 18 months. That was a long absence for a young horse, but he may just have needed it to fill out his frame, and it certainly hasn’t done him any harm. I Will Be Baie is a lightly raced point winner who could go on to better things for the Mullins team. This former Colin Bowe-trained Taylorstown winner is now a bumper and maiden hurdle winner. The form of his Fairyhouse maiden win was advertised by the runner-up My Trump Card winning at Navan last Saturday. The Elliott and Mullins yards house most of the stronger novices who have graduated from point-topoints, but Henry de Bromhead can have big hopes of getting in on the act with the Robcour-owned Slade Steel, winner of a Grade 2 contest at Navan in December. Pierce Power had this Telescope gelding when he won at Dawstown in the spring of 2022. Mention of Telescope as a sire brings us to top hunter chaser Ferns Lock, who did his reputation no harm at the weekend. David Christie’s star had experienced a few reverses since his 20-length win over the talented Billaway at Thurles this time last year. He suffered a shock defeat at Fairyhouse last April and a less surprising loss when beaten by last season’s Punchestown festival winner Its On The Line at Down Royal at Christmas. He had a bit to prove at Thurles on Sunday but did it style, putting in a fine round of jumping and dominating all the way to beat Limerick winner Romeo Magico by eight lengths without being asked a serious question by Barry O’Neill. It was interesting to hear Ruby Walsh comment on Racing TV that Ferns Lock might be more suited by the level Aintree track and the shorter trip of its Foxhunter Chase rather than the St James’s Place at Cheltenham. However, David has Cheltenham firmly in his sight now. And of course, the double is not impossible. Enda Bolger did it with On The Fringe in 2015 and 2016, and completed the treble at Punchestown for good measure in both those seasons.

IN FOCUS Edmond Roche reflects on a special day after his first riding success on Farmers Future

C

ROSSING the line in front on Farmers Future at Aghabullogue this month was all a blur really. It was mighty. I didn’t expect to be riding a winner. I only took out my licence to have a bit of fun, so to get a winner was a complete bonus – I’m delighted. I have always wanted to ride in races but I didn’t really think it was possible because I am so tall and weight would be an issue. But when I went full time at it I made a good effort to get my weight right and, thankfully, it has worked out. Growing up, my Dad, who is also Edmond, had young horses around at home. We didn’t race many, but there were always a couple of younger horses there. Dad always bought a couple of foals that would have been sold as three-year-olds – they were there and then I started off on ponies when I was seven or eight at a local riding school, before I got my own pony when I was 11, and it went from there. I started at Marie Harding’s stable when I was 16. It was the first racing yard I was in and I have been there ever since. Her place is only two miles over the road from me. She has played a huge part. I wouldn’t have got the licence only for her encouraging me. I mentioned it to her that raceriding was something I had in my head that I would like to do and she was very supportive of it. That was massive. Farmers Future is in her yard and is a horse who my sister

Edmond Roche earns his first success aboard his sister’s Farmers Future at Aghabullogue this month

Niamh owns. His work had been pretty good at home of late, especially in the last six weeks or so; we were just worried about the ground for him. His best run last season was his final one at Dromahane in April when the ground was good. He ran a great race that day and, while he is a big horse who we thought might have wanted a bit of an ease in the ground, he seemed to like the

good ground that day. That was in the back of our minds going into Aghabullogue, but I would say this year Farmers Future has matured physically; he is a stronger horse and he coped well with the slower ground. The race itself worked out well; we got into a nice position and he jumped well. Touch wood, his jumping has been very good, and the further we went into the race

the better he was travelling. He really warmed to it and it was probably in that last halfmile that he was doing his best work. My family was there on the day and a good few friends from Marie’s too – it was a great day and one I won’t forget, that’s for sure. It was a mighty day in the end with Marie having a double; her horses are running really well, thankfully, so to get

a double in consecutive races was fantastic and made the day extra special. I’ve been working full time for Marie since I finished college. I studied agricultural science at CIT in Cork. Farming is what we do at home in Castletownroche, County Cork; we have dry stock and some tillage. It’s something I’m interested in and we have started breeding too, so horses and farming will

NEWS AND VIEWS

definitely be a big part of my future. Working for Marie I have learnt an awful lot about all aspects of the industry. She does a lot of sales prep under Glen stables, alongside breaking and training point-topointers, so there is a good variety of work. Nearly everything I’ve learned about racing has been from Marie. Attention to detail would be a big thing for her, not just sales prep, but everything really, so you would learn to have the same approach from her that anything you are going to do with horses should be done right from the start. It pays off when you put in the extra effort. She has fantastic staff too, which is worth a lot. When you are working with people such as Eoin O’Brien, Pierce Gallagher and Joanna Walton, who are very good at their jobs, you are learning an awful lot from them too once you are taking it all in. They have all been a massive help, giving me advice to help improve my riding and offering advice with race riding too. Farmers Future will go for a winners’ race now in a few weeks’ time. Hopefully, we will have a bit more fun with him and anything now will just be a major bonus. EDMOND ROCHE WAS TALKING TO EOGHAIN WARD

Carrigarostig abandoned after three races STORM ISHA left its mark on last weekend’s pointing action, as heavy rain and strong winds affected Ballycrystal and Carrigarostig. The latter was hit most severely, with the stewards abandoning the fixture at the halfway point. A total of 16 runners took to the track for the first three races and, after the mares’ winnersof-two race the acting stewards met the IHRB medical officer, IHRB officials, a delegation of riders and members of the Killeagh hunt committee to discuss concerns over the accessibility of medical services on the course in the deteriorating conditions. After considering the matter it was decided to abandon the

meeting. It was a disappointing day for the committee with the weather intervening in what is usually a well-attended fixture. It was understandable that only a dedicated few braved the conditions at both venues, but the two committees have to be praised for their efforts, particularly after a week of hard frost which presented its own problems in the run-up to the fixtures.

Doyle’s double a sign his yard is hitting form

A total of 90 handlers had saddled at least one winner this season before last weekend’s action, but that list did not include Donnchadh Doyle (right). That was until he sent out a

d ou b l e at Ba l l yc r y st a l o n Sunday, with the victor y of M illie he Supreme in th s i x- y e a r- o l d and-upwards m a r e s ’ maiden a belated first success of the campaign. A former c h a m p i o n handler, a priize he olin Bowe Bo e shared with Colin in 2015, Doyle’s steadier start is more notable as it comes after one of his most successful campaigns with 25 winners and a strike-rate of 32 per cent. After the second of his Ballycrystal winners, Doyle said he hoped the day’s results were a

sign his horses are coming back to form and, if that corner has indeed been turned for the s t a b l e ’s runners, it could be a notable line for pointing followers in coming weeks as he will no doubt want to make up for lost time.

History to be reprinted in Tyrella card

The East Down Foxhounds celebrate 60 years of staging p o i nt-t o -p o i nt f i xtu re s at Tyrella this season, beginning with the first of their two

fixtures this year on Saturday. The picturesque coastal venue was first used by the East Down on Saturday, March 21, 1964 as they moved from their venue at Moneycarragh, near Clough, and the cover of the racecard from that 1964 fixture is reprinted in the programme for the fixture on Saturday. Dur ing the 60 years the hunt has raced there, the track has developed a reputation for producing drier ground in t h e d e p t h s o f w i n t e r, a s handlers target the course’s t w o f i x t u r e s w i t h b e t t e rground horses. The 2021 Ir ish National winner Freewheelin Dylan features among the entries for the open lightweight race. Now a 12-year-old, Dermot

Mc L o u g h l i n ’s 1 5 0 - 1 I r i s h National hero has not been seen since finishing sixth in an open at Tinahely in October. That race was won by Focus Point, who could again renew rivalr y with Freewheelin D y l a n a s h e a l s o f e atu re s among the Tyrella entries and, although the eight-year-old Focus Point has not backed up his Tinahely victory in two subsequent starts, the form of that race has held up considerably in the intervening period. Th e r u n n e r- u p Fakir D’Alene went on to finish third in the € 1 0 0 , 0 0 0 T roytow n Chase at Navan in November, while the third and fourthplaced horses, Ramillies and Dinny Lacey, have won four open races between them.

Shamrock’s change of luck down to tactical switch MELBOURNE SHAMRO CK was on home turf when opening his account as the Ballycrystal fixture took place on a course inside the gallop of his handler, Matthew Flynn O’Connor. T h e € 7 0 , 0 0 0 Ta t t e r s a l l s Ireland Derby sale purchase had not made much of an impact on his debut at Quakerstown in November. However, a change of tactics to ride him from the front to set a strong gallop in the Tattersalls NH Screws & More and Village Bar Clohamon five-year-old geldings’ maiden, produced a vastly improved result. One by one his rivals faltered, but the Hillstar gelding galloped on resolutely under Brian Lawless to hold off the strong-finishing effort of Ma g s Mu l l i n s’ n e w c o m e r Colonel Nelson. “He just wasn’t ready the first day but has improved loads, and has really come good in the last six to seven weeks,” Flynn O’Connor said. “We always knew he had the ability, just getting it out of him was the thing.” The local Ballycrystal stables team had high hopes of a double at their home fixture when their Dark Soldier held every chance approaching the final fence in the Triple Threat & MSK Silversands confined maiden, only to come down. His departure allowed Patriotik to run out a 20-length winner for Rob James and Donnchadh Doyle. That completed a double for Doyle’s Monbeg stables after the debut success of Millie Supreme in the Baltimore stables & Ballyboy stables older mares’ maiden. Bought for just £16,500 in a ThoroughBid online auction in November 2022, the six-yearold was patiently produced by James to beat Take A Hike by eight lengths. “She’s a lovely mare and I was late getting her,” Doyle said. “She’ll go for a winners’ race

now in a couple of weeks.” Having b e en on b oth of Doyle’s winners, James had opened his treble when teaming up with Robert Tector’s Little Miller in the B a r l o u Wo o d c r a f t , H o r s e Ha p py Ve t e r i n a r y & G a i n Equine Nutrition five-year-old mares’ maiden. This was another race in which the final fence proved decisive, as Gordon Elliott’s newcomer Ocean Brew still held an advantage when making a mistake and parting ways with Harry Swan. Her departure left the Court Cave-sired Little Miller in front and she held off a wall of challengers by a length and a half. Backinaction had made a promising debut at the same venue in October and, after disappointing subsequently at Tinahely, D enis Murphy’s runner bounced back to form by claiming the Moses Coffey, L & M M o t o r s, Ja s o n Ke l l y Specialist Cars, Jason Farrell Auto Body Repairs & Ronan Fu rl o ng Ty re Wo rl d o l d er geldings’ maiden. The six-year-old’s supporters had Jack Hendrick to thank for the victory as he did well to recover from an early mistake before beating Grange Soldier by four lengths. Sam Curling was the only non-Wexford-based handler to get on the scoreboard when De Nordener gained a deserved third career success in The Paddocks winners-of-two. An unlucky final-fence faller a week earlier when in pursuit of the talented Ramillies in an o p e n , t h e e i g h t- y e a r- o l d reaped the rewards of the drop in class. Toni Quail’s mount took

control off the home bend as a six-length defeat of Prophet’s Corner saw him supply his sire Ocovango with a ninth success of the season. “Derek O’Connor and Tom Keating recommended him, and we got him for Toni to ride really,” Curling said. “She is a big part of the team at home. She does a lot of work with the young horses and is a v e r y g o o d r i d e r. KILLEAGH AT CARRIGAROSTIG SUNDAY Pictures: HEALY RACING

Bluey lights up difficult day to keep Cotter riding high HIGH winds and heavy rain forced the Carrigarostig meeting to be abandoned after only three races and 16 runners but not before the Billy Coddtrained Bluey lit up the raindrenched afternoon. She came home as she pleased in the opening Hurley’s SuperValu, Midleton five-yearold mares’ maiden and, along w i t h t h e d a y ’s o t h e r t w o winners, is scheduled to be o f f e re d at t h i s Sat u rd ay ’s Tattersalls sale after racing at Cheltenham. A daughter of Affinisea who had finished second in similarly testing conditions at Ballyknock last Easter, Bluey was bounced out smartly by 17-year-old Shane Cotter and made all the running to give an exhibition of fencing. Having enjoyed a clear lead early on, Bluey’s advantage was eroded setting out on the final circuit. However, she was still able to receive a couple of timely breathers before being closely attended by Runaway Bride and Grainne A Chroi on the run to two out. The chasing pair were unable to cope with the bay, who was well in command approaching the last. Bluey, who was having her fifth start, drew clear on the incline to the finish to beat the staying on Either Way by an unchallenged 11½ lengths. She gave Britway, County Cork, r i d e r C o t t e r, w h o w o r k s alongside Denis Murphy, his second success. “She’s a smashing mare and she was sick after she finished fifth in Lingstown the last day,” Codd said of his daughter-inlaw Robyn Codd’s winner, who is out of a half-sister to three black-type winning racemares i n My s t i c Th e at re, Ca s t ra Vetera and Morello Royale. “We knew she was back to herself and we really fancied her today.” The Tom Keating-trained Mill ie B l a n d e d h e r t h i rd success from three starts in the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders Association mares’ winners-oftwo, a race in which the sevenrunner field was the largest of the races that took place. ENTRIES have a reference number to the horse’s last run, form figures (latest on right), owner, handler and exclusive rating (same scale as rules RPR). For penalised horses we suggest deducting half a point per pound (penalties not confirmed until race-day). Irish point-to-point entries are ordered as follows: 1 Horses whose owner has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) owner, (b) horse. 2 Horses whose handler has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) handler, (b) horse. 3 Remaining horses, ordered alphabetically. Abbreviations: B-brought down; b-baulked; C-carried out; d-disqualified; F-fell; P-pulled up; R-ran out; r-refused; S-slipped up; U-unseated rider.

Irish industry urged to move goalposts for jumpers

… There was no dissent among the panel who, for varying reasons, agreed with the need for an earlier start. [Anthony] Bromley, who has purchased countless stars in both Ireland and France, pointed out how that desire for quicker returns reflects wider societal changes. “The way life is now, people can’t wait for later maturing stock to develop,” he said. “Society has become much quicker and people want things to happen faster.” , 19th January 2024
