Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point
Points producing fast hurdlers as well as top staying chasers
S
TAMINA and speed are what jump racing is all about. Often it’s a case of one or the other, but the very good ones usually have a mix of both. Last week I wrote about Thyestes Chase winner Longhouse Poet and mentioned other recent winners of the big Gowran Park race who started off in the point-to-point field. Naturally, it was a list of chasers whose most important attributes included stamina and the ability to jump well over three miles in winter ground. Those are the qualities many racing followers think of when they see a horse referred to as “a former point-to-point winner”. But some of the main stories of the season highlight a different aspect. The novice hurdling scene in Ireland and Britain is dominated by horses who started in Irish points. And we’re not just talking about horses bound for races such as the 2m5f Ballymore Hurdle or the 3m Albert Bartlett, but several of the speed horses in the 2m division. Sir Gerhard was one of the stars of the Dublin Racing Festival. I rode him to win a maiden at Boulta for Ellmarie Holden towards the end of 2019. I thought he was a gorgeous horse with a huge amount of scope. That day he won by a dozen lengths from the John Nallen-trained Minella Drama, a good novice hurdler for Donald McCain last season and a talented novice chaser this term, winner of a 2m4f Grade 2 chase at Haydock last month. At first sight, Sir Gerhard impressed me as a future chaser, but look what he’s achieved since: winner of the Cheltenham bumper and now a 2m Grade 1 winner over hurdles, and potentially set for a Supreme Novices’ clash with two Nicky Henderson-trained point graduates. I’m familiar with both Jonbon, who I rode to win for the Holdens at Dromahane just a few days before he made headlines in the sales-ring in November 2020, and Constitution Hill, a horse I schooled before he finished second for Warren Ewing in a maiden at Tipperary last April. They are 2m novices of real quality, already high achievers, with the promise of much more to come. I wouldn’t be in a hurry to predict how
HEALY RACING
they will match up against each other at Cheltenham but it will be a spectacular start to the festival if all three turn up in top form. The big Leopardstown meeting
‘Rob James (right) and Harley Dunne have a great work ethic. They have energy and a hunger for success to go with their skill’
was memorable on many levels. The brilliant Honeysuckle was the star of the show – 14 out of 14, said a lot of reports. But recall where she first appeared: Dromahane, trained by Jerry Cosgrove, ridden by Mark O’Hare – 15 out of 15. And let’s not forget some top horses who failed to win a pointto-point, such as Gordon Elliott’s Irish Gold Cup hero Conflated, a faller in a race at Borris House as a four-year-old, and Saturday’s Grade 1 novice hurdle winner Minella Cocooner, second at Turtulla for John Nallen only 15 months ago. Finally, Birchdale winning the Leopardstown Chase for JP
McManus, Enda Bolger and young Mark McDonagh brings us back to the theme of staying handicap chasers. There have been some bumps along the way since his time as a novice hurdler in the Henderson yard, but it was good to see him deliver on the promise he showed in winning at Tyrella for the Wilson Dennison-Colin McKeever team as a four-year-old.
Young handlers make big splash with four-year-olds
The opening four-year-old maidens of the year run last Sunday were a triumph for the younger generation of handlers. Ballinaboola winner Doyen For Money was ridden to victory by his owner-trainer Harley Dunne, while his County Wexford colleague Rob James was on the mark on the other side of the country as trainer and
Sir Gerhard, now a candidate for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, lands a Boulta maiden in 2019 under Derek O’Connor
rider of Bellharbour winner Out Of Office. David Murphy, another young handler with riding experience, saddled Matata to win at Tallow. Doyen For Money’s win reflects great credit on Harley who bought him at the Tattersalls store sale last August. That’s a short turnaround to produce a horse to win a competitive race on the first Sunday in February. He won comfortably from the Colin Bowe-trained odds-on favourite Ideal Vert. The Ballinaboola race was over 2m4f, and Doyen For Money looks a horse with plenty of pace, whereas Out Of Office, a half-brother to the talented Bright New Dawn, is more of a staying type in the making. He beat a well-fancied runner from a respected source, the Pat Doyletrained Readin Tommy Wrong. Rob, who completed a riding double on Donnchadh Doyle’s impressive five-year-old Fact To File, is having another highly successful season and lies second in the table behind Barry O’Neill. He and Harley have a great work ethic and have picked up valuable experience in the big Wexford yards. They have energy and a hunger for success to go with their skill, and I can see them becoming more and more influential as producers. James Hannon took the riding honours at Tallow, riding a treble which included the Open on Na Treachtalai Abu, trained by James Motherway for Brian Acheson. He was returning to his roots almost eight years after his Dromahane debut. Along the way he has won five races, including the Midlands National at Kilbeggan and has been placed 17 times. The 12-year-old still has plenty of ability. The Keith Watson-trained Amaulino is another useful track winner now getting his chance to reinvent himself as an open horse and hunter chaser. He made the long trip from the north worthwhile by winning at Bellharbour under Harry Swan. If he wins closer to home at Armagh next time he could go to Cheltenham.

TALENT SPOTTER Brian Dunleavy reveals how his fierce ambition to be a jockey began at an early age
T
HERE was never a plan-B for me. I have wanted to become a jockey ever since I was eight or nine and starting out at pony camp. I don’t come from a horsey family but I was brought up around racing. My dad bought a racehorse about 20 years ago, Knocknakeo Lady, and my early racing memories are of going racing to watch her run. When she retired we bred from her, and one of the first racehorses I ever sat on was her first foal, Rocking Dj. I was mad keen to get going. I started pony racing when I was 12 and I stayed at it until I turned 17. I didn’t ride too many winners – I had only about 12 or 13 – but I had great opportunities. Every weekend I was going racing for four or five rides and it gave me great experience – learning to get balanced at a young age, pushing out a horse in a finish and how to use your whip. It was at pony racing that I met Liam Healy, a man who has done more for me than I
‘The more contacts you have the more chances you have’ can ever thank him for. One of my best friends is Joey Sheridan; we started off pony racing at a very young age together and Liam was very good to us. It’s always good to have someone like that giving you advice and Healy’s photographers in Listowel still sponsor me. Joey and I are still very good friends and it’s nice the way we have gone in different directions. Once I turned 17 I took out my point-to-point licence and it was always the route I was going to follow. I’ve was tall from an early age. Jennifer Pugh (IHRB senior medical officer) measured me at 6ft 5in at Fairyhouse a month ago, so I had no choice which direction to take my career. My weight is very good though, but for me it was
always point-to-pointing. I love the points, even if I was to ride on the track I wouldn’t get the same kick I get at a pointto-point. I come from a very horsey community in Dungourney. Cork-Waterford point-topoints would all be local to me and every Sunday I would have been going to them. My father, Liam, is chairman of the Dungourney point-to-point and he would always have been stewarding or helping out. When I was making the switch from pony racing I set
myself a big goal: to ride my first winner when I was 17. I was very lucky to do that on a horse for Alan Ahern, who is from Dungourney too. Since then, things have been going well but I decided to make a change this season. I turn 20 this week and I have done a couple of years now based in Cork and built up a lot of strong contacts, but I felt that in Cork, although there are a lot of handlers, there wouldn’t be a big number of four- and five-yearold horses. At the end of last summer I
started doing the odd day in John Nallen’s stable and I went into Tom Keating’s too – it opened up my eyes a bit. I rode my first winner for Tom at Oldcastle on the first day of this season, and after that I started going into James and Ellen Doyle in Wexford for one day a week. I’m living in Wexford now and in with the Doyles three or four days a week. I still go to Tom every Wednesday and I’m travelling north once a week to Graham McKeever too. You have to put in your graft and it’s a bit of a journey, but that extra day of racing you get out of it up there on a Saturday is a big help chasing winners and extra contacts, when you would only have had racing on a Sunday otherwise. I think that is very important. I would go to America in a
NEWS AND VIEWS
canoe if it meant riding for a new person, because at the end of the day I know people will say that it’s the same names winning all the races, but it’s not really, and the more contacts you have, the more horses you sit on, the better horses you sit on, the more chances you have of winning. Thankfully, it’s paying off, I had my second double of the season at Tallow on Sunday (left), although I don’t know if I count my first double as it came with two dead-heats. Tallow is only ten minutes down the road from home. It’s a very tight community, so to ride winners for Alan Ahern and Michael Griffin was special. I have a couple of horses in training with Michael, including Plan B, who completed my double. Michael is only five minutes from my home place. He has a public gallop there and when we had horses at home, even back to the flappers, we would take them there and he has been very good to me. I go back to Michael in the afternoon to ride them out. It’s two and a half hours away and I do that most days, then come back to Wexford again. It’s a lot of travelling but it has to be done, and Michael is a shrewd operator, so I’m happy to have the horses there. BRIAN DUNLEAVY WAS TALKING TO EOGHAIN WARD

Records keep coming for brilliant Dromahane graduate Honeysuckle HONEYSUCKLE added yet another chapter to her remarkable career on Sunday with her third consecutive victory in the Chanelle Pharma Irish Champion Hurdle. The success further cemented her place in racing history when matching the longstanding record of Bula by winning 14 successive races over hurdles. That winning streak began after her successful debut at Dromahane in April 2018 when she won a four-year-old mares’ maiden for Banbridge trainer Gerry Cosgrave. Her win was one of four at the top level for graduates of Irish pointing who won half of the Grade 1 races at the Dublin Racing Festival, including the feature races on both days after the Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup victory of Conflated. Emphasising the versatility of horses coming from the pointing ranks, the Grade 1 novice hurdle victories of Sir Gerhard and Minella Cocooner came at either end of the distance spectrum, mirroring the Grade 1 success in the open
Rachael Blackmore and Honeysuckle return to cheers after their third Irish Champion Hurdle victory
division of Honeysuckle and Conflated over two and three miles respectively.
Comea ‘will be very good for spectators’
The Scarteen Hunt will belatedly unveil a new course for their point-to-point this
Sunday when racing takes place at Comea, a track which is just two miles from their longstanding course at Kilfeacle. Widely regarded as one of the toughest tracks on the circuit, the galloping Kilfeacle course first staged a
point-to-point in 2001 and produced a number of subsequent Graded performers, including First Lieutenant and On The Blind Side in the 18 years of racing at the track. Comea had been scheduled to replace it with a first pointto-point fixture last year before
the season was interrupted by Covid-19 restrictions. Bill Hanly will fill the role of secretary for the first time at S u n d a y ’s f i x t u r e a n d h e expressed the appreciation of the hunt at having found a new track. “We were very lucky to get another track so close to the old course and within our hunting country,” said Hanly, whose colours will be familiar to point-to-point followers through the exploits of his dual point winner and hunter chase regular Three Loud Knocks. “ The new track is righthanded in one large field that is all in grass. It is a one-mile circuit with five jumps on each lap and we have one fence in the home straight with a slight pull to the line. “We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone to the track and it should be a good viewing track for spectators.”
Rewards attract young entrants to training
The start of the four-year-old maiden season is always keenly anticipated and results of the
opening three races in the division on Sunday perfectly illustrated the changing face of the spor t, when the three winning trainers were all aged under 30. David Murphy was responsible for the winner at Tallow and Harley Dunne and Rob James rode their own horses to success at Ballinaboola and Bellharbour respectively. Not only are all three aged 28 but they are also all riders who have either moved fully into training or continue to balance the two roles, as is the case of the latter pair. The path from race-riding into training is a well worn one, however it seems more riders are electing to take that route at an early stage as they try to break into the ultra-competitive and ultra-rewarding fouryear-old division. W i t h p o i n t- t o - p o i n t e r s already grossing more than €16 million at public sales this season, the rich rewards that p o i n t- t o -p o i n t i n g o f f e r s , particularly in the four-yearold maiden division, is proving to be a hard draw to ignore.

WEEKEND REPORTS
WEXFORD AT BALLINABOOLA SUNDAY
Doyen For Money follows illustrious Ballinaboola path WITH Envoi Allen and Telme somethinggirl heading the recent roll of honour for the spring four-year-old maiden at Ballinaboola, the Tattersalls NH-sponsored contest was always likely to be a hot race and it was Doyen For Money who made most to add his name to that illustrious list. Harley Dunne sent his mount on in the home straight and although Mark The Man attempted to close at the final fence, where he and rider Adam Leahy went their separate ways, it was left to Doyen For Money to return seven lengths clear of the staying-on Ideal Vert. “He idled a bit up the straight but he was there for two and a half miles on his own in front. It was a good performance and we fancied him big time today,” said Dunne who bought the sales-bound four-year-old in partnership with fellow rider Simon Cavanagh for just €11,000 last August. Sean Doyle has farmed the Cooney Furlong five-and-sixyear-old mares maiden and he won the contest for a third time

in the last five runnings when Credrojava created a ver y favourable impression on her debut. Ca r r y i n g t h e c o l o u r s o f Henry Chamney, Jamie Scallan always had the daughter of Presenting to the fore, and although the more experienced From This Moment provided a persistent challenge, it was one she was able to rise to as she forced From This Moment to fill the runner-up spot for the third time this season with a half-length victory. Further success followed for the Scallan-Doyle combination when Is A Real Champ landed the concluding Ballywalter Farms winner-of-three contest. It was honours even between the eight-year-old and Midway To Getaway entering the race after their two most recent encounters in hunter-chase company and the pair came to
the fore on their return to the pointing fields. However, it was Is A Real Champ who took the initiative in the home straight, keeping on best in the deteriorating conditions for a ten-length victory. “He had a great run in Limerick and I probably shouldn’t have run him in Clonmel the next day but he’s a great horse to have. We’ll go back for a hunter chase now,” the Monbeg trainer said. Former rider-turned-trainer Mark Scallan is enjoying by far his best season as he saddled his fourth winner of the campaign when Wasini Island claime d division one of a strongly run Coolbawn Gallops five-year-old geldings maiden. The Conduit gelding had shown considerable improvement when fourth at Moig South in the autumn and he continued in that progressive vein by overhauling the experienced long-time leader Tapley at the final obstacle, before he was driven on by Sean Staples to win by three lengths.
WEST WATERFORD AT TALLOW SUNDAY
The judge was unable to split C a p t a i n C h e c kd o w n a n d Chosen Witness in division two of that contest, with the former having made much of the r unning under Jack Hendrick before a slight error at the last allowed the Barry O’Neill-ridden Chosen Witness to join him in the dying strides to force a dead-heat. Winning trainers Andrew
Latta and Colin Bowe indicated that both winners were now likely to be offered for sale. The Devereux family continue to enjoy good fortune with their homebreds, and Worthatry became the latest winner to emerge from their Rostoonstown Stud on the Wexford coast with victory in the Jason Higgins Sporthorses six-year-old geldings’ maiden.
Having chased home subsequent £160,000 seller Grand Soir at their local track at Lingstown before Christmas, the Publisher gelding was entitled to put in a big display, which he did by accounting for Dream View by four lengths in the hands of Shane O’Rourke. “He showed what he can do today and he did it easily,” the winning rider said. “He still
Hannon takes the honours with first treble in
THERE’S nothing quite like winning in front of a home crowd and James Hannon did just that at his local Tallow meeting when dominating the West Waterford Foxhounds fixture by partnering the first treble of his career. Hannon experienced the best possible start when teaming up w ith Thurlesbased handler David Murphy to win the Fifty Stars four-yearold maiden with wellsupported newcomer Matata. The Vadamos-sired Matata bounced out in front and led until overtaken by Bannow Bay Boy two-out. Matata surged back to the front approaching the last to beat Bannow Bay Boy by three lengths with the pair the only finishers. “He was broken in early and we expected him to do some thing like this,” Murphy said of Matata, a brother to five track winners and who he trains for his landlord Donal Commins.

Also benefiting from frontrunning tactics, the winning son of Well Chosen got the better of patiently r idden newcomer Flash Conroy to win by a length in the closest finish of the afternoon. “ He’s a b i g h o r s e w h o’s savage to jump and we think a lot of him,” Goff said of the towering Well Dick, a €15,000 acquisition as a foal who is out of a sister to black type-placed chaser It’s Crucial. five-time winner under rules who landed the most prestigious of his track victories in the 2019 Midlands National at Kilbeggan, completed the Hannon hat-trick by making a victorious return to hunt racing duties in the Rathbar r y & Glenview Stud open. Na Trachtalai Abu, who was partnered by Hannon on his only other points start when second in a Dromahane fouryear-old maiden in March 2014, tracked long-time leader Lord Schnitzel in second spot. The 12-year-old made his challenge coming to the last and the Brian Acheson-owned bay mastered Lord Schnitzel on the flat to win by one and a half lengths. “Brian was anxious to come back pointing with him,” said Motherway of Na Trachtalai Abu, who also finished second in a Munster National and third in the Kerry National. “We’ll go for another open with him.”

Ian McCarthy’s newcomer Max’s Champ was an unlucky loser in the Coolmore Stud National Hunt Division older geldings’ maiden as he held an eight-length advantage when falling two-out. Out Of Office enjoys a romp by the sea ROB JAMES enjoyed a profitable trip west to the Burren, l e av i n g t h e C o u n t y C l a re coastal venue with a double initiated by Out Of Office in the opening Costello Family fouryear-old maiden. Th e latte r wa s t r ying t o uphold trainer Pat Doyle’s remarkable record of having won half of the last ten runnings of the race. However, it was Out Of Office who proved the stronger, powering home to effect with two lengths to spare at the line. “This is a good horse with a big pedigree,” James said. “It’s great to get off the mark early with the four-year-olds. He’ll have learned a lot from that and will be sold now.” T h e 2 8 - y e a r- o l d r i d e r r e t u r n e d t o t h e w i n n e r ’s enclosure when teaming up with regular ally Donnchadh Doyle as they unleashed Fact To File to make an impressive winning debut in the Tattersalls NH & Sixmilebridge Mart five-year-old geldings maiden. One of two winners on the card to have been bought at the Arqana sale, this Poliglote gelding produced a devastating turn of foot off the home bend that left his rivals trailing. Such was his superiority, he returned six lengths clear of Asian Master despite being eased close home. “This lad has always shown us something a bit special at home. He’s always done everything asked of him very easily,”

ENTRIES have a reference number to the horse’s last run, form figures (latest on right), owner, handler and exclusive rating (same scale as rules RPR). For penalised horses we suggest deducting half a point per pound (penalties not confirmed until race-day). Irish point-to-point entries are ordered as follows: 1 Horses whose owner has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) owner, (b) horse. 2 Horses whose handler has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) handler, (b) horse. 3 Remaining horses, ordered alphabetically. Abbreviations: B-brought down; b-baulked; C-carried out; d-disqualified; F-fell; P-pulled up; R-ran out; r-refused; S-slipped up; U-unseated rider.
