Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point
Vaucelet a prime contender for next season’s top hunter chases
I
T’S been a busy week, starting off with a rare midweek meeting at Ballyknock. There was point-to-point action over the three days of the Easter weekend, as well as four hunter chases and two point-to-point bumpers. It was a good weekend for several of the leading personalities on the point-to-point scene in Northern Ireland. David Christie, who went so close with Winged Leader in the St James’s Place Hunter Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, saddled Vaucelet to win the Frank & Teresa O’Reilly Memorial Hunters Chase at Fairyhouse. He gave an impressive performance to come home well clear of Sam Curling’s Aloneamongmillions, who won the Tetratema at Gowran and is unbeaten in his six Irish point-topoint outings. David has been patient with the seven-year-old Vaucelet who won the big novice hunter chase at Stratford last May. He was tempted to send him for the Foxhunter at Aintree but decided to hold off. Decisions like that are always difficult, but I think David did the right thing. In hunter chasing terms, Vaucelet is a young horse with time on his side. He looks like maturing into a top-class performer. With Winged Leader being only one year older, the stable could have a big influence in the Cheltenham and Aintree hunter chases next season. Good ground seems to bring out the best in Vaucelet and he probably didn’t like the soft conditions when third in the hunter chase at Down Royal’s Christmas meeting. The winner of that race Dorking Cock took the open at Oldcastle, completing a good couple of days for the Crawford brothers who won both four-year-old races at Loughanmore. Largy Force, a newcomer by Workforce, battled well for a short head win in the mares’ race, and the French-bred It’s For Me looked above average in taking the geldings’ race for leading owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede. He’ll be one to look out for on the track. The Loughanmore card ended with a win for the Caroline McCaldin-trained Faith Loving who has now won twice in points since

finishing fourth in the Down Royal race win by Dorking Cock. This was a milestone for Noel McParlan as it was his 200th point-to-point winner. Noel is only the third Northern Irish-based rider to reach that mark, after the legendary Willie Rooney, who rode 401 winners in a 50-year career, and Mark O’Hare, who had 244 winners between 2001 and 2020. Noel has always been a great competitor and
‘Noel has always been a great competitor and has ridden plenty of winners on the track as well’
has ridden plenty of winners on the track as well, including Missed Approach for Warren Greatrex in the 2018 Kim Muir Chase at the festival. Northern stables had the upper hand for the second leg of the Loughanmore fixture on Monday. The first two races were won by rider Cormac Abernethy on horses trained by Colin McKeever and Caroline McCaldin. David Christie’s good form continued with wins in the two main races, Alice O’Byrne in the mares’ winners-of-two and Some Man in the open. Reappearing only nine days after his Taylorstown win, Some Man beat the Crawford runner Stamp Your Feet, who was having his first run since joining the stable from Enda Bolger. Barry O’Neill rode the
two Christie winners and completed a treble on Near Dark for Wexford handler Andrew Latta.
Point-to-point riders make the headlines at Cork
With so many of the professionals in action at Fairyhouse on Easter Monday it makes sense that the Cork card on the same day provides opportunities for amateur riders, with three hunter chases and two point-to-point bumpers. The mares hunters’ chase was won by the Eoin McCarthy-trained Ifeoinly, a first racecourse success for Brian Lawless, who has been making a name for himself in points. He was joint-champion under-21 rider with Ben Harvey two seasons ago and is having a good campaign. He rode his 14th winner of the season at Curraghmore on Saturday and is joint-sixth in the senior title race with Chris O’Donovan and James Hannon.
It was also a big day at Cork for Charlie Mullins, younger brother of Grand National-winning jockey David. He has ridden winners in bumpers, on the Flat and over hurdles but had never ridden in a chase before partnering Its On The Line to win the John Thomas McNamara Series Maiden Hunters Chase for his cousin Emmet. A couple of weeks ago Timmy Love got a taste of the National fences, riding Down The Highway to complete the course in the Aintree Foxhunter. On Monday he gave the nine-year-old a good ride to peg back Lord Schnitzel in the Jack Tyner Memorial Hunters Chase. Easter Monday is a big day in the Love family history. The rider’s grandmother Dot enjoyed the biggest moment of her career when saddling the 2013 Irish Grand National winner Liberty Counsel. Wexford rider Jack Hendrick is having his best season in points. He had a winner at Ballyknock last Wednesday and at Loughanmore on Saturday to bring his total to 18, putting him fifth on the table. He’s making an impact on the track as well and rode Monbeg Park to win the geldings’ point-to-point bumper for Sean and Donnchadh Doyle. The Walk In The Park gelding, whose dam is a sister to Shark Hanlon’s top-class Hidden Cyclone, has overcome an injury problem and looked a bright prospect, beating the Henry de Bromhead-trained Senior Chief who was a ten-length maiden winner for Colin Bowe at Carrigarostig in January. Senior Chief’s trainer won the mares’ bumper with Belle The Lioness, a Soldier Of Fortune filly who showed potential when third in a Boulta maiden for Donal Barry in December. With the focus on Fairyhouse, it was good to see the point-to-point sector getting a big slice of the track action at Cork. Finally, congratulations to Dermot McLoughlin on a brilliant training feat. His 2021 Irish National winner Freewheelin Dylan ran in six points and won two before making a winning racecourse debut in a hunter chase at Listowel. Lord Lariat had only one run in a point and was pulled-up, but that’s where it all started, at Monksgrange just over three years ago.

TALENT SPOTTER
‘From the very start speed was a big attraction. I was hooked’
Barry Stone explains why going freelance has proved such a good idea
I
HAD a great day in Taylorstown this month when I rode a treble for the first time. Going up there I thought that Wideeyedandlegless in particular had a good chance. He’d been doing everything very easily at home and we took him to Monksgrange and he’d done a couple of nice pieces of work. That gave us a bit of confidence he would run well but you’re always hoping it works out. To end up with
three winners was brilliant. Even before Taylorstown things had been going well this season. I’ve had ten winners, which is my best yet. I decided to take a different approach this year and see how going freelance would work out. I’m in with my uncle Benny Walsh and Jonathan Fogarty and I school for a good few handlers – the likes of John Walsh, Brian Jordan and Mick Goff. Then, whoever needs me, I try to make the time for them. I was with James and Ellen Doyle for two seasons. I found when you’re based in just one yard it’s hard to pick up outside rides because you’re not schooling for other lads. You can’t go schooling whenever you need to or meet

Patience rewarded for McParlan and Doyle
EASTER brought notable milestones for two stalwarts of the weigh-tent, with Noel McParlan achieving his 200th pointing winner, while Eoin O’Brien reached the 100-winner mark. McParlan became just the 24th rider in the history of the sport to reach 200 winners, a feat he achieved in the finale at Loughanmore on Saturday on Fa i t h L ov i ng f o r Ca ro l i n e McCaldin. That came 20 years after the Down native recorded his opening success between the flags. Since then he has risen to the top of the sport within the region, winning the northern title three times to become the most successful northernbased rider still active. O’Brien had been on the 99-winner mark for three and a half months but that winless run in the pointing fields came to an end when Hipop deadheated in the adjacent maiden at Ballyknock. His career has been almost as long as that of McParlan, with the Cork native in his 17th season, and throughout that time he has amassed a wealth of connections with many handlers, particularly on the Cork-Waterford circuit, turning to him for his experience.
While some riders elect to focus on the backing of one stable, O’Brien has built his successes through a freelance approach, evident in his 100 winners being provided by 50 individual handlers.
Ballyknock only last Wednesday and it leaves him some way short of the 18 fouryear-old maidens his Monbeg Stables landed in spring 2019 with just six weekends remaining of the campaign.
Bowe and Doyle youth team yet to hit stride
Grand National clean sweep for pointers
Two of the sport’s powerhouse handlers, Colin Bowe and Donnchadh Doyle, have been conspicuously quiet in the four-year-old maiden division this spring. F o r B o w e ’s M i l e s t o n e S t a b l e s, t h e s p o r t ’s m o s t successful yard in each of the last seven years, the four-yearold maiden season began in the manner expected with Captain Teague, Willmount and Sleeping Satellite winning races in February. However, since Sleeping Satellite’s Ballycrystal success on February 20 the stable had been without a four-year-old maiden winner until I Will Be Baie at Taylorstown this month. Contrast that with the s t a b l e ’s 1 5 f o u r- y e a r- o l d maidens in the last uninterrupted spring season in 2019. The change of fortunes for Doyle has been even more stark. He recorded his first four-year-old winner of 2022 at
Lord Lariat completed a clean sweep of Nationals this spring for Irish point-to-pointers as, for the second year in a row, Dermot McLoughlin won the Boylesports Irish National with an outsider. Unlike last year’s victor Freewheelin Dylan, who he had sent out to win three point-topoints having acquired him from Shane Donohue, Lord Lariat was with Stamullen handler Patrick Casey when he ran in a Monksgrange fouryear-old maiden in March 2019, pulling up in that only outing between the flags. The run was notable as his handler returned to the saddle in the pointing field after a ten-year absence when he put on the colours of Lord Lariat’s owner Patrick Blake. The victory follows the successes of Win My Wings in the S cottish National and Noble Yeats at Aintree on the two previous weekends.
seeing the benefits of going freelance I wouldn’t go back to working in one yard for a whole season again. I’d always like to stick to this approach and have two or three yards behind me, then fit in as many around it as I can.
I did have a good run with the Doyles. I got my first winner for them in a four-yearold maiden at Loughrea and my first three winners were all on four-year-olds for them, which was a great start. Harley Dunne had been working there at the time and James Doyle was looking for staff. Harley told me to come in for a few days and see what I thought and I ended up staying there for two seasons. Harley left to go out on his own and I ended up getting plenty of winners there as it was just Luke Murphy and me riding there. It was good timing. It was my uncle Benny who started me off in racing. He had me riding out when I was 12 or 13. From the very start, speed was a big attraction. It didn’t take me long to catch the bug and I was hooked. I’d grown up with ponies and horses around the place at home. I’d been riding horses for as long as I can remember.
We did everything with horses as kids, from hunting with the Killinicks, to crosscountry and showjumping, but once I sat on a racehorse for the first time the ponies were never going to match up any more. The adrenaline rush from the speed of a racehorse is a lot greater than sitting on a pony or a cob. When Benny started bringing me into a racing yard it would have been to Brian Jordan’s, so it was great to be able to complete my hat-trick in Taylorstown on Kalanisi Flash for Brian. He’s been a great supporter of mine alongside John Walsh, who supplied me with the other two winners. I’d started the season with the aim of trying to ride out my claim. After the three winners in Taylorstown that brought me to 19 career winners so I’ve almost managed to do it. Hopefully, I’ll get across the line now in the next few weeks.

Politicianspromise delivers dramatic unseat for Dunleavy BRIAN DUNLE AVY experienced the highs and lows of being a jump jockey with his 12th winner of the campaign before producing one of the season’s most spectacular unseats. His upside-down moment came in the afternoon’s final race, the T & M Fitzgerald & Kelkab Ltd adjacent maiden when his mount Politicians promise was cannoned into by a loose horse approaching the seventh fence. The six-year-old gelding stayed one side of the fence, allowing Dunleavy to perform his own version of a flying dismount on the other side. Both rider and horse returned unscathed. It was a memorable race in two other respects. It produced Eoin O’Brien’s 100th points victory in the saddle on the Olivia Hegarty-trained Hipop, and a dead-heat with Colin Motherway’s Big Gangsta. The once-raced Hipop made the best of his way home from five out only to be joined on the line by the Brian Lawlessridden Big Gangsta. A stewards’ inquir y was called for possible interference but the result was allowed to stand.

Getupearly was one several winners to benefit from positive tactics at a track which played to frontrunners
Dunleavy had earlier continued his excellent season by teaming up with Micheal Griffin to collect the Goffs Punchestown Sale four-yearold geldings’ maiden with Catuaba. One of seven newcomers in the line-up, Catuaba picked up the running after three out, while runner-up Low Mileage closed from the last. The winning son of Jet Away was in no mood to be denied and he held on to win by one and a half lengths in the colours of his trainer’s wife Kay. “He had been working well at home and will probably now go to a sale,” said Griffin’s brother Colm of the €7,200 graduate of last year’s Tattersalls Ireland August sale. Low Mileage’s rider Jack Hendrick didn’t leave empty handed as he later combined with fellow County Wexford native Robert Tector to collect the East Cork Oil winner-ofone on Killybegs Junior.
Keep Me Posted attempted to make all, but Killybegs Junior moved closer from two out and took command on the flat to account for Laura Costello’s mount by a neck. “He’s a very tough horse who is improving the whole time and he’ll now go to Monksgrange on April 24,” Tector said of his fifth winner of the season. The Mattie Collins-trained Getupearly fulfilled the promise of his third-placed debut effort at Carrigarostig in mid-Januar y by landing a competitive renewal of the Hurley’s SuperValu Midleton five-year-old geldings’ maiden under Chris O’Donovan. Getupearly was always positioned at the head of affairs and the €30,000 Derby sale graduate gradually increased the tempo in this truly run contest from five out. H o w e v e r, l a s t s e a s o n ’s Tipperary bumper runner-up Zero Tolerance moved through to challeng e on the outer approaching the last. The winning son of Getaway was in no mood to be denied, however, and dug deep on the flat to account for Zero Tolerance by a neck. Getupearly, a half-brother to
Swinton Hurdle winner War Sound, is owned by his trainer’s son Pat Collins. “Chris O’Donovan gave him a peach of a ride and he jumped from fence to fence,” the younger Collins said. “I couldn’t really see him getting beaten here and if he’s not sold, he will go for a bumper. “ T h e D o n n c h a d h D oy l e trained newcomer Love At Sea similarly impressed with a clearcut success in the Tattersalls NH, Mag & Noel Long, & Hickey’s Bar Mount Uniacke four-year-old mares’ maiden. In a race in which four of the nine runners drew clear from three out, Love At Sea assumed c o m m a n d f o r R o b Ja m e s before the last and the winning daughter of Affinisea scorched clear on the flat to dismiss Goodtimecrew by a widening three lengths in the familiar Monbeg Syndicate colours. “Donnchadh thought she would run a nice race. She would be good enough for a bumper and she’ll be sold,” Doyle’s brother Sean said of the €13,000 Derby sale graduate, who is a half-sister to Listed placed hurdler Lone Wolf. Five-horse handler Terence Leonard, who sent out Koyote to win last month’s Gain Mares’
Final, recorded his fifth success of the campaign courtesy of Apple Away in the second division of the Ahern’s Centra & Mark Landers Financial Ser vices five-year-old and upwards mares’ maiden. Apple Away was always on the pace and last month’s Nenagh debut third eased clear under Mikey O’Connor from two out to beat Chitchat Sally

‘He’s one to look forward to’ – Crawford
DAY one of the Loughanmore Easter fixture saw Stuart Crawford send out his first pointing double since Tattersalls in December 2020. As was the case then, the Simon Munir and Isaac Souede ownership again featured at the heart of it with It’s For Me impressing in the Dennison Commercials four-year-old geldings’ maiden. Bought for €40,000 by Highflyer Bloodsto ck, the French-bred was produced from off the pace by Crawford’s younger brother Ben. Once asked to extend in the home straight, the response was immediate as he made the best possible start to his career by accounting for fellow
newcomer He’s Ultimate by eight lengths. In the process, he provided former French jumper Jeu St Eloi with his first pointing winner, six days after Nina Carberry’s Hilton De Chaillac was his first offspring to feature in an Irish point when second at Tattersalls. “He’s a nice, young horse,” the winning handler said. “It was always the plan to have him held up. He’s a young hors e and w e’re tr ying to educate him. He’s one to look forward to wherever he goes.” That c o mp l e t e d a c l ea n sweep in the day’s four-yearold races for the Larne outfit as the Crawford brothers opened the card by sending out Largy

It was not as straightforward a task for her introduction as she was strongly pressed by Donnchadh Doyle’s newcomer Windtothelightning, with just a short head separating the pair at the line. Following that agonising defeat for one of Donnchadh Doyle’s two runners on the card, it was left to his younger brother Cormac to uphold

One of four newcomers on the day to make the perfect start to their racing careers, Jack Hendrick overhauled the long-time pacesetter Northern Edge at the final fence on the son of Westerner and they had enough in reserves to fend off Derek O’Connor’s mount Inis Oirr by a length. Downpatrick rider Declan Lavery had two good reasons to celebrate the debut success of the well-named Shecouldbeanything in the Tattersalls N H f i v e - y e a r- o l d m a r e s ’ maiden as not only did he ride the Malinas mare to victory he did so while sporting his own silks for the first time. She proved 13 lengths too good for fellow debutante Call The Barmaid for the biggest margin of victory across the seven races run. “We didn’t think she would
be beat today,” Lavery said of the Patrick Turley-trained mare. “She’s a very honest, straightforward mare. She has a lot of ability. She jumped well, travelled and has a big engine. Hopefully, she’ll go on to bigger and better things now.” The victory of Faith Loving in the Fleet Financial winnersof-two will forever be associated with providing the former three-time regional champion Noel McParlan with his 200th victory between the flags. The Kilcoo rider produced Caroline McCaldin’s sevenyear-old at the final fence from where he denied Turley and Lavery a double by beating their Tareeshar by two lengths for a famous victory.
The Gooner scores on impressive debut THE Matthew Flynn O’Connorowned and trained The Gooner hinted that a bright track career awaits by posting a stunning debut success in the Tattersalls NH four-year-old geldings’ maiden. The favourite Bill Jack moved through to dispute the running at ha l f- way a n d h e e dg e d ahead four out. The Gooner, however, went in pursuit from the third-last and edged past the marketleader before two out. Despite jumping out to the right at this penultimate obstacle, the winning son of Flemensfirth powered clear under Brian Lawless between the final two fences to dismiss Bill Jack by 12 lengths with the pair being the only finishers from the dozen participants. The Gooner gave handler Flynn O’Connor, who previously started off Sporting John in points, with an initial fouryear-old winner of the season. “The Gooner is a lovely horse and he will now be sold,” the Ballycrystal stables operator said of The Gooner, a £39,000 acquisition at last year’s Goffs UK store spring sale. “My horses were below par for a while this year, but they’re back in top form again.” Susie Doyle consolidated her advantage in the lady riders’ championship by bringing her seasonal tally to eight on the

Mikey Sweeney teamed up with handler Pat Crowley to win the first division of the Lake Tour Stables & John Flavin Racing five-year-old geldings’ maiden on newcomer No But I Will. Battle Of Mirbat set out with the intention of making all but he was overtaken by the sweettravelling winner before the last. With Battle Of Mirbat exiting there when held in

We’ll find a new home for him now,” Crowley said of the yearling acquisition his wife Hazel owns in partnership with Morgan Sheehan from Dungarvan. Battle Of Mirbat’s handler Kieran Purcell and rider Shane O’Rourke experienced better fortune in the second division of the race when Scamallach Liath re c o rd e d a b att l i ng success. Dorking Cock rules the roost DORKING COCK was a surprise winner when taking the hunter chase at Down Royal on St Stephen’s Day at 22-1 and he made his muchawaited return to action for the first time since with victory in the feature Bective Stud open. Sent off as a relatively easyto-back favourite, the Stuart Crawford-trained eight-yearold set a good tempo in the early stages and coped well with the rain-softened conditions to beat the former Willie Mullins-trained Vis Ta Loi on his third start for Garristown handler Nick O’Reilly. “It’s been a good weekend,” Crawford said, having saddled a Loughanmore double 24 hours earlier. “He was very impressive at Down Royal but then had a wee bit of trouble with his splints so that’s why he hasn’t been seen since. “It was unfortunate because I was hoping to go to Aintree with him, but he was just a wee bit short of work. “He was bought to go hunter chasing but there’s probably a good handicap to be won with him somewhere down the line, so we’ll see.” The soft conditions were
possibly the undoing of fellow northern raider Carlotalin in the Tattersalls NH & Foodalicious mares’ maiden. Liam Lennon’s six-year-old had finished placed twice previously at the Meath venue, including a career-best effort on the opening day of the season, however she proved to be no match for Mark Scallan’s Califet mare Notkeepinyagoing. She galloped her two rivals into the ground under Mark S c a l l a n t o re t u r n w i t h 4 5 lengths to spare over her challengers. The Rea McGee Auctioneers older maiden for novice riders proved much more dramatic. Walious Bay looked to be in pole position to provide his young rider Ivan Ryan with a first success in the saddle, only to come a cropper at the final obstacle. His departure cleared the way for Serious Mickey to provide Cavan handler Patrick Magee with his first success in the sphere since 2017. With Liz Lalor’s title rival Susie Doyle featuring among the winners at Curraghmore on the same afternoon, the victory of De Legislator in the

Fortunate Soldier made all the running and had plenty left in reserve to repel all challengers
Triermore Stud five and sixyear-old geldings’ maiden was key for the former eight-time ladies’ champion to ensure she remained three winners adrift of Doyle. The Shirocco gelding, whom h e r p a r t n e r To m Ke a t i n g picked out for €33,000 as an unraced three-year-old in 2018, quickened best from the final fence to beat the improved Snake Roll by two lengths and is now likely to be offered for sale. The excellent form of the Liam Kenny stable continued when Fortunate Soldier tookadvantage of his experience in the Goffs Punchest o w n S a l e f o u r- y e a r- o l d maiden. An encouraging third on his debut at Lisronagh behind subsequent £200,000 sale Act Of Authority, he franked that form by getting the better of the Jack Hendr ick-r i dden American Sniper to provide
Ja m e s K e n n y , s o n o f t h e winning handler, with his fifth victory of the season. The six-length success was a third winner between the flags in as many weeks for the Ballydarragh handler w ith this Soldier Of Fortune gelding sporting the Patrick Redmond silks made famous by 2010

The Knockanard adjacent maiden winner appreciated the underfoot conditions under Walshtown rider James Murphy as he bounced back from a comprehensive defeat by the ill-fated Plan B at Liscarroll. “He’s a lovely horse and a yard favourite,” handler Paul
COUNTY CLARE AT QUAKERSTOWN SUNDAY
Foreverwalking follows the Bacardys path for THE Goffs Punchestown Sale four-year-old maiden at Quakerstown has quite a roll of h o n o u r, w i t h C ha m p a g n e Fever, Bacardys, Next Destination and Brewin’upastorm among its winners in the last ten years. Given that record, big things will be expected from Foreverwal ki n g, w h o o p e n e d h i s account at the first time of asking in this renewal. His handler Pat Doyle had saddled subsequent Grade 1 hurdler Bacardys to win the race seven years ago and this €70,000 purchase from the sponsor’s 2021 Land Rover sale had seemed to have an easy victory sewn up approaching the final fence as he battled through the heavy rainfall. A mistake at that obstacle saw his resolution fully tested as it gave Rath Gaul Hill the chance to come back at him.

Foreverwalking looks to be another notable name to emerge from the Quakerstown four-year-old maiden
However, he was picked up by Pa King to win by a head. “That was a very good performance first time out in tough conditions,” the winning rider said of the Walk In The Park gelding. “He got a bit lonely in front late on but when the other horse came to me he picked up well again. He’s still immature and will have come on plenty for that.” The Tipperary rider moved on to the 25-winner mark for the season when he teamed up with Getaway Train to land the concluding Clare Bookmakers
Foreverwalking was a brave winner on his racecourse debut
& Pier Head Restaurant confined maiden. The five-year-old had failed to trouble the judge in two previous outings but took a notable step for ward by dismissing the challenge of his stablemate Jacks Orchard by three and a half lengths. The success completed a memorable eight days for local handler Donie Hassett, who had sent out Grand National winner Noble Yeats to finished second in a Ballindenisk maiden two years earlier. T h e re w a s f u r t h e r l o c a l su c c e ss w h e n S earch For Glory provided Conor Costello with a winning return from injury in the Tattersalls NH, D a n Mc In e r n e y & S o n s & Conor Engineering five-yearold geldings’ maiden. Glory gelding, who was purchased by his handler John Costello as a foal from Tallow breeder Pat Connell, was left clear at the final fence by the departure of the challenging Fulgurant to defeat Old Folk Tale and Harley Dunne by five lengths. After two seconds on the card, Harley Dunne fared better in the ITBA & Gort Co-Op mares’ maiden when Noplacetobe justified her position at the head of the market to beat a vastly improved Finding Fame and her first-time rider Evan Nugent. Cashman said. “He’s honest, he’s tough and he gallops and jumps. “He’s a real old fashioned chaser and we love him to bits. He’ll make a good open horse in time but whether we keep him or not I’m not sure. That will probably be him for the year now.”
Dorking Cock followed up his 22-1 victory at Down Royal in December with a win in the Bective Stud open
trainer Doyle Opportunity at Loughrea three weeks earlier. Having partnered his 100th pointing winner at Ballyknock four days earlier, Eoin O’Brien r e t u r n e d t o t h e w i n n e r ’s enclosure after the Connolly’s R e d Mi l l s o l d e r g e l d i n g s’ maiden as the victory of Meetmeatthearch was a family success for the Mitchelstown native. Owned by his wife Marie and trained by his father Vincent, the Jet Away gelding showed the benefit from his introductor y r un at Ballynore last month to beat Road To The Weir by three lengths. “He ran better than it looked in Ballynoe first time out as he was badly hampered by a loose horse and that experience stood to him today,” O’Brien said after his 101st pointing winner. “The bit of rain helped and you’d really like the way he
finished his race.” Debbie Cody was also thankful for the rain that had fallen through the afternoon as she sent out Grade 1 winner Killultagh Vic to take the O’Connor Family ladies’ open. The Kilkenny handler had saddled the 13-year-old to win at Comea in February, and her daughter Emily was once again in the saddle as Rose Boyd’s Old Vic gelding doubled his tally for the season by beating the long-absent Dubai Dandy by 25 lengths. “I brought him to Tattersalls last weekend but didn’t run him as I felt the ground was too quick so I was delighted we got the heavy shower of rain here as he likes soft ground,” Cody said. “He’s a wonderful horse to have around the place and we might put him away until next season now.”
Dennison rewarded on home turf with Hold Up La Colmine upset LANDOWNER Wilson Dennison had the best possible start to Monday’s fixture at his Loughanmore venue when his colours were carried to victory in the opening Topping Meats adjacent winners-of-two in front of a packed crowd. Hold Up La Colmine, the outsider of three having not previously won, upset the odds when the Cormac Abernethyridden son of Choeur Du Nord accounted for the impressive Nenagh victor Coco Masterpiece by two and a half lengths. “Cormac gave him a great ride. I told him ‘Don’t let those boys tell you what to do, you follow and watch the whole race, you’re riding a nice young horse,’” local handler Colin McKeever said. “They went a nice steady pace and he got into a nice rhythm. I think he could be a good horse.” That long-standing partnership of Dennison and McKeever could easily have doubled up as Toomebridge held the initiative coming to the last in the Dennison JCB six-year-old geldings’ maiden, only for the CastletownGeoghegan runner-up to come down at that obstacle with the race seemingly at his mercy. However, up stepped Dennis o n ’s d a u g h t e r C a r o l i n e McCaldin to uphold family honours as her Ballyhack burst through to defeat Ballyferris to complete a double for Dungannon native Cormac Abernethy. The ten-length victory of the Beat Hollow gelding was a sixth victory of the season for McCaldin as her best season continues to go from strength to strength. R id i ng h o n ou rs w e nt to re i g n i n g c h a m p i o n B a r r y O’Neill as he kick-started an Easter Monday treble on Alice O ’ B y r n e i n t h e W i l s o n ’s Auctions mares’ winners-oftwo. The Vinnie Roe mare had returned from a mid-season break when a beaten favourite i n Tay l o r s t ow n n i n e d ay s earlier but she showed the benefit of that run when easily dismissing the challenge of Rock The Hill by 15 lengths. Presenting Ana was back in third on her second appearance of the weekend at the Antrim venue.

Near Dark had the form in the book from Monksgrange and she proved to be a class apart from her rivals
“We took her to Tinahely and she had a horrendous fall at the last,” Alice O’Byrne’s trainer, David Christie, said. “When she came back we couldn’t get her right, not for love or money. I said to the boys to take her home for a while over the winter. “They went and rode her here, there, and everywhere, and brought her to the sea. We’ll try get another run into her before the end of the season and will probably head to the
track then for the summer.” The Fermanagh handler sent out his third winner of the weekend, after the emphatic 20-length victory of his Vaucelet in Saturday’s Frank & Teresa O’Reilly Memorial hunter chase at Fairyhouse, when Some Man became the sixth horse to win a fourth race this season. Like his stablemate Alice O’Byrne, he too had been in action at Taylorstown nine days earlier, and with his regular rider Rob James contesting the Irish Grand National the same afternoon, it was O’Neill who deputised. The pair recorded a comfortable eight-length defeat of the ex-Enda Bolger Stamp Your Feet in the John Thompson & Sons open.
Christie admitted he would take a look at the champion point-to-point title for the nine-year-old, a title he won two years earlier with another owned by Ray Nicholas, Eddies Miracle. O ’ Ne i l l m ove d o n e st e p closer to retaining the northern title for a third straight year by extending his advantage in that regional championship to six winners when completing his hat-trick on Near Dark in the I s l a n d b a w n o l d e r m a r e s’ maiden. The victory could scarcely have been recorded in easier fashion as Andrew Latta’s mare, who brought the strongest piece of form into the race courtesy of a fine effort in defeat at Monksgrange three weeks earlier, breezed clear of her rivals from the home bend to beat Youghalbegood by 12 lengths. Richard Black had not sent out a runner since December 2020 but he announced his return in emphatic fashion by saddling stable debutant Ohzark to land the Jackson’s Butcher Shop & Bakery older geldings’ maiden for novice riders. The near-white Schiaparelli gelding had not seen competitive action in more than three years but he made light work of his return, defeating the now three-time runner-up Patriot’s Prayer by a distance in the hands of Oulart rider Bertie Finn.
