Mullins lays it on the line with pair of hunter chase victories
W
E HAD two hunter chases over the Christmas period with the main focus being on a high-quality contest at Down Royal. It produced a good battle that saw Its On The Line, running for the first time on the racecourse since winning the Irish Daily Star Champion Hunters’ Chase at last season’s Punchestown festival, beat Ferns Lock, the favourite in a field in which his trainer, David Christie, saddled four runners. Barry O’Neill went to the front on Ferns Lock at the tenth of 16 fences. Two out he faced a challenge from Ramillies, one of his stablemates. He won that battle, but Charlie Mullins was beginning to get a good response from Its On The Line, who had appeared to be struggling a little at the second-last. When you consider that Charlie was claiming a 7lb allowance it’s fair to say that both the Emmet Mullinstrained winner and the second emerged with a lot of credit. The two horses were then still a week away from their official seventh birthday, so their connections have a lot to look forward to. Ferns Lock is unbeaten in four starts in point-to-points and this was only his second defeat on the racecourse. He’s very much in the mix for the season’s main events, but things are not going so well for his stablemate Vaucelet, who won the Down Royal race last season but was beaten a long way in fifth this time. He was second to Its On The Line at Punchestown last spring but hasn’t managed to show his best form since. He was second in Stratford’s big hunter chase in June but finished only third in his pointto-point races at Portrush in October and Lingstown in early December. However, he’s in very good hands with David, who has a great knack for getting the best out of horses who have lost their way a bit. That has usually been with older horses who have been in other stables. This time he’s working with a horse who has only just turned nine and has been with him since 2020 after running in a couple of maiden hurdles. I certainly wouldn’t rush to write him off.

Romeo Magico and Dara McGill (left) get the better of Casey West in the maiden hunter chase at Limerick
A day after Its On The Line’s Down Royal win Emmet Mullins struck with Romeo Magico in the maiden hunter chase at Limerick. A halfbrother to Ruaille Buaille, a mare who won a bumper and three races over hurdles for Willie Mullins, Romeo Magico was having his first outing since last May and battled

away well to beat Casey West from the in-form Philip Rothwell stable. The Affinisea gelding got a good ride from Dara McGill, who also partnered a handicap chase winner at Down Royal and has ridden ten winners in points this season. Next on the agenda on the hunter chase front is tomorrow’s maiden contest at Clonmel. It has attracted 13 runners, including Casey West and the Gordon Elliott-trained Ringcraft, who was second on his only point-to-start in the 2022 autumn campaign. I’m hopeful of being in the mix on Miners Bridge, a Mahler gelding. I felt I had a bit in hand when he won a maiden at Boulta in November, and the runner-up Electric Dreamer has won since at the same venue.
Thrilled to end year with a double for Ellmarie Holden
After the Christmas break, point-topoint action resumed at Dromahane on December 30 and I was thrilled to end the year by riding a double for Ellmarie Holden. We kicked off in the five-year-old geldings’ maiden with the promising Frisby, a son of Flemensfirth. He was bought as a store at the Goffs Land Rover sale in 2021, so connections have had to wait a good while, but it’s been worth it. This was a professional performance and he looks readymade for the track. The double came on Hitak in the open. I rode him on his debut in the 2022 season but he spent a long time off after that and it was only last month that Ellmarie got him back to win a maiden at Tattersalls Farm, giving Paddy Cody a first point-topoint win. On paper, I thought he faced a very tough task against Winged Leader,
winner of 13 of his previous 20 starts in points and probably best known for losing by a neck to Billaway at the Cheltenham Festival in 2022. Winged Leader was unbeaten in four starts in points last season. Although he disappointed when favourite for the Foxhunters’ at Aintree, he ran well behind two good yardsticks Dinny Lacey and Lifetime Ambition, both race-fit, on his seasonal debut at Ballindenisk at the beginning of December. He made most of the running and jumped well but I was able to close on Hitak to lead two out and he went away on the run-in to win by six lengths. It was a lovely performance by a horse having only his third race. Ellmarie is having a good season, despite having saddled little more than a handful of runners. She made it five wins from only six individual runners this season when Locken Lady won the mares’ maiden at Tinahely on Sunday, a big moment for Johnny Barry, riding the 200th point-to-point winner of his career. He’s been associated with many talented young horses, including 2021 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Minella Indo, who he rode to win a maiden at Dromahane in 2018 for John Nallen.
High-quality Queallys
Declan Queally’s record as a rider this season is incredible. He made it ten wins from 12 rides since October with a treble at Ballindenisk, shared with his father. The pair won two maidens and took the open with The Jam Man, the 2020 Troytown winner. Manatee Du Brizais, winner of the five-year-old geldings’ maiden, could head for a bumper soon. He’s out of an Aga Khan-bred Galileo mare who is a half-sister to Sayar, a Grade 3 hurdle winner for Willie Mullins. The Tinahely fixture was memorable for Jordan Kidd, who rode his first winner on Arverne for Gavin Cromwell in the open, and for Christine Worrell also off the mark, riding Elusive Touch in the mares’ maiden. This was a very poignant occasion. The mare was a first runner for handler Paddy Quinlan since he and his wife Eilis suffered a terrible blow when their daughter Dani, a talented showjumping rider, died early last month after a battle with ill health.

IN FOCUS Mick Goff (below) on producing his first Grade 1 winner and a successful Christmas period
J
ANGO BAIE was the first Grade 1 winner I’ve produced with his success in the Formby Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree on St Stephen’s Day. I was hoarse after watching it. I roared at the TV so much; it was a dream to watch it. He’s a horse I bought from the Bleahans, and this game has a habit of repeating itself. When you’ve had success you tend to go back to the same sources. I got Daly Tiger from them, and he was a good horse who won a couple of big pots and was placed in Grade 2 and Grade 3 races. Any work we did with Jango Baie was always very good. Before he even ran in his point-to-point, I asked JD Moore to go to France for me and take a look at a couple of his siblings because I thought he was that good. There was a brother who was very small and a half-brother who was a fine, big lump of a horse. We left the brother behind but I have the half-brother here. Jango Baie finished second for us at Knockanard in February on his debut. The race didn’t pan out our way. We were upsides one of the Doyles’ horses and it fell which left us in front too long. It’s a big ask on those horses, but it just shows you how strong
‘When something like this happens and it does click, it’s unreal – it is the dream’ point-to-points are at the moment that he’s a Grade 1 winner inside a year. I went to the sales at Cheltenham with him after, and I sort of stuck my chest out and said he was a very good horse. If you go and do that and they fall flat on their face, which unfortunately has happened, it doesn’t argue in your favour, but when something like this happens and it does click, it’s unreal – it is the dream. I’ve had horses beaten in point-to-points who have gone on to be very good and I have no doubt that the winner in Knockanard [No Flies On Him] will probably go on to be something special. The result is a brilliant buzz for Jerry McGrath too, who bought the horse at Cheltenham, as it is the first Grade 1 winner he’s bought. He is trying to get going at the game and the way you get going is by buying good horses and having your name associated with these Grade 1 winners. That’s what we all want.
JOHN GROSSICK (RACINGPOST.COM/PHOTOS)
Jango Baie wins the inaugural Formby Novices’ Hurdle less than a year after his pointing debut
It was a good Christmas for our horses. San Frandisco won a bumper in Haydock for Jamie Snowden, Outlaw Peter finished second for Paul Nicholls and Path D’Oroux was very unlucky to fall at the last in Leopardstown. Before Christmas I sold a Malinas horse at Cheltenham really cheaply. Rosscahill is his name. He won a four-year-old maiden at Boulta and he will be a Graded horse. Whether he is Grade 1 or not, time will tell, but he is very good.
Everyone is starting to turn their attention to the new bunch of four-year-olds at this time of year. I have 20 or 25 four-year-olds for spring and I still have a couple of nice fiveyear-olds to run too. There is a Mister Dinos and a Mahler who are two lovely horses and will probably be two of the first four-year-olds of mine to run, and they might go back to Knockanard. My son Harry has started riding in point-to-points this season. He is trying hard at it
and he goes down to Jamie Codd for a couple of hours a week. You couldn’t be in a better place when trying to learn. Two years ago he had no interest in horses. He wouldn’t even come up to the yard, and then one evening he came over and said, ‘Dad I want to ride a horse’. I told him to work away on some of the ponies, but he was adamant he wanted to ride a point-to-pointer, so he came up and rode one and then he wanted to ride two.
NEWS AND VIEWS
Next, he wanted to leave school to ride horses but I told him he had to finish his leaving cert. When he finished that I asked him if he was going to go to college or what he wanted to do. He said he was going to leave it for a year or two and go fully at the horses, and if he wasn’t happy with it he would go to college. He’s only 17 but he took it on his own bat to go to Jamie’s and take out his riding licence. Every week, when we’re doing entries, he’s there beside me, saying we should enter different horses at particular tracks. He has a very good interest. My other son, Oisin, has been pony racing and he rides very well. He won a pony race and it was like winning the Grand National. I was hoarser that day than I was any other day. I have a little girl Caitlin too, and she has also ridden in a pony race. Pony racing is a great education for kids starting off. They get competitive, they make good friends, but they also learn about pace in a race. They will never learn about pace going around a gallop, that only comes in a race. It is nice to see their interest as you need the young people coming along. MICK GOFF WAS TALKING TO EOGHAIN WARD

Barry’s mileage and hard graft rewarded
EIGHTEEN years after making h i s d ebu t i n t h e p o i nt i n g fields, John Barry reached a milestone 200th success between the flags on Sunday. Teaming up with Kilkenny handler Ellmarie Holden for just the second time in his career, the Conna rider guided Locken Lady to victory in the Tinahely opener. In doing so, he became the 25th rider in the history of the sport to reach the 200-winner mark. Noel McParlan was the previous most recent rider to do so last year. Few riders will be able to lay claim to covering as many miles in a season as the Corkman, who travels the length and breadth of the c o u nt r y e a c h w e e k e n d i n search of winners. This is evident in the fact that
his 200 winners have been recorded at 71 different courses, an accomplishment few have achieved. That hard graft has been richly rewarded.
Tinahely or Cheltenham all alike to Cromwell
Gavin Cromwell has gained plenty of attention for his strike-rate at Cheltenham this season, with former pointer Stumptown his latest winner at Prestbury Park when landing a £55,000 handicap chase on New Year’s Day. The Meath handler’s runners between the flags may not be as frequent, but they are proving just as successful. At Tattersalls in October Cromwell sent out Fameaftertheglory to beat the likes of Screaming Colours and subsequent winner Ramillies by a
wide margin on his first start in the division. The eight-year-old finished third in the cross-country race at Cheltenham last month, losing his hunter certificate for the rest of the season. However, his stablemate A r ve r n e ma d e a s i m i l a r l y immediate impact on his open debut at Tinahely on Sunday. He was owned by JP McManus in whose colours he finished third in the 2018 Grade 1 Coral Finale Juvenile Hurdle at Chepstow on his final s t a r t f o r Ad r i e n L a c o mb e before joining Cromwell. His track career may not have hit great heights since but by winning the Tinahely race the nine-year-old has supplied his trainer with a second open success with his second runner in the division this season.
Queally treble puts title pressure on Bowe
A treble in front of a big crowd at Ballindenisk has moved Declan Queally to within two winners of reigning champion Colin Bowe at the top of the handlers’ leaderboard. The Waterford operator is having another phenomenal season as Sunday’s winners move him on to 16 this season. With close to five months of racing to come, that leaves him just five winners shy of eclipsing his best total of 21 achieved last season. Those 16 winners have come from just 28 runners, a highly impressive strike-rate of 57 per cent. While his son and namesake has said a title challenge is unlikely to materialise once Bowe takes the wraps off his
new crop of four-year-olds next month, it is testament to the yard’s changing fortunes that such a lofty rate of success has been maintained. Winning with new additions to their Lisroe set-up has been a trend in recent years and last weekend’s results demonstrated that with the victory of The Jam Man. Seven years after Queally jnr rode the gelding in a four-yearold maiden at the Cork venue when he was under the care of Eugene O’Sullivan, he was reunited with the 11-year-old, who gained attention during his spell with Ronan McNally, for whom he won the 2020 Troytown Chase at Navan. Winless since then, he was m o st re centl y w ith Phi lip Rothwell, running four times on the Flat last summer, but on
his first outing for the Queally family he justified market support, which was a measure of the confidence in his chances given that the recent impressive course victor Dinny Lacey lined up in opposition. Queally’s win-rate is bettered this season by Ellmarie Holden, who is striking at 71 per cent. The Kilkenny handler may not have sent out as many runners as Queally, but when she runs a horse this season it almost invariably wins. Locken Lady at Tinahely was her fourth winner in a row, a sequence which has included a Dromahane double over the Christmas period, and means that since the end of February, her eight runners in the pointing fields have all finished in the money.

WEEKEND REPORTS
UNITED LISGOOLD AT BALLINDENISK SUNDAY
The Jam Man provides sweet third leg of Queallys’ treble THE 2020 Troytown Chase winner The Jam Man provided credence to the maxim “once a good horse, always a good horse” by making a victorious first start for handler Declan Queally on his return to points in the Kepak open. The concluding leg of a treble for Cappagh-bas e d trainer Queally and his son and namesake who was on board the 11-time track winner, The Jam Man was always on the pace in this five-runner contest and he edged ahead with two fences remaining. Dinny Lacey threw down a challenge approaching the last fence and, although he reached the girths of his rival, that was as near he got as the winning son of Papal Bull asserted on the run to the line to beat him by a length.

There was no stopping Manatee Du Brizais as he opened up on the climb to the winning post to leave his rivals toiling
“We bought him from Ronan McNally two and a half months ago and it’s great that Ronan’s son Tubs was here to lead him up,” Queally jnr said of The Jam Man, who is now owned by the rider’s mother, Bernie. “He worked well during the week but is still carrying a bit of condition. He’ll probably now run at Dungar van in three weeks.” The father-and-son combination opened their treble with Diamond Nora in the John Gray Auto Services five-yearold mares’ maiden.
Diamond Nora, the only newcomer in the five-runner field, was bounced out smartly at the head of affairs and gave a superb display of fencing. The winning daughter of Diamond Boy, having enjoyed a clear advantage to half-way, threw another fabulous leap at the final fence and was too strong for runner-up Honeywort with one and a half lengths separating the pair. “She’s a nice mare and, if she’s not sold, she’ll go for a winners’ race,” the younger Queally said of the Rachelle Fitzsimmons-owned Diamond Nora. Manatee Du Brizais was the Queallys’ remaining winner in the Tattersalls NH five-year-old geldings’ maiden, the race with the biggest field of the afternoon of ten runners.
The French-bred had held placed prospects when departing two out in the Boulta maiden won by Rosscahill last month and he made his way to the front two out to see off The Wrecklessruler by a widening eight and a half lengths.
“He was bought in France and would be better on nicer ground. If not sold, he will go for a bumper,” Queally jnr said of the Sean Browne-owned winner. There was another fatherand-son success as 19-year-old

Good N’ Kind hands out 28-length thrashing THE day’s racing was punctuated by a minute’s silence held in memory of Willie O’Neill, a Cork and Waterford point-topoint stalwart who died two days earlier. On the course, the Colin Motherway-trained Good N’ Kind created a highly favourable impression by cruising home in the Tattersalls NH f o u r- y e a r- o l d g e l d i n g s’ maiden. Fourth on his Boulta debut, he was always at the head of affairs alongside Chesnut Grove. The winning son of Arctic Cosmos is homebred by Cork All-Ireland hurling winning captain Mark Landers, who is a member of the winning Good N Kind Partnership. Barry O’Neill notches his 20th success of the season on Admiral Stewart in the five-year-old geldings’ maiden
Barry reaches 200-winner landmark on Locken Lady JOHN BARRY emerged from the dense fog which enveloped Fairwood Park to claim his milestone 200th success with the debut victory of Ellmarie Holden’s Locken Lady in the Weatherbys Ireland five-yearold mares’ maiden. The Snow Sky mare was one of three horses to jump the final fence in unison but the newcomer responded gamely to her rider’s urgings on the short run-in to edge half a length clear of the more experienced Fire Force. “Ellmarie had Locken Lady’s ha l f- b ro t h e r G e ra l d o a n d before he ran I went to see this one in Wexford and I bought her out of a field,” said John Fitzpatrick, representing the winning handler. “Johnny rode her like the best horse in the race and was full of confidence at the bottom of the hill.” At a rather earlier stage of his career, 21-year-old Jordan Kidd was one of two riders to gain their first victory when teaming up with Gavin Cromwell’s Arverne in the Shillelagh and District open.

Placed in Grade 1 company when under the care of French trainer Adrien Lacombe, the nine-year-old was appearing in the pointing field for the first time having appeared to have lost his way on the track. The change of discipline was in his favour as he just held off the fast-finishing Stranger Danger by a rapidly diminishing half-length. “Gavin said to just leave him where he is happy,” Kidd said. “Nobody seemed to want to go forward, so I let him bowl along in front as I knew he was fit. “The idea of me riding was to get a feel for how a race is properly run. Down the line I want to be a trainer. I’m too tall [to be a jockey]. I’m 6ft 2in, so I don’t know how long I will get at riding.” Twenty-year-old Christine

Owned and trained by Paddy Quinlan, whose daughter Dani died a month earlier, the nineyear-old was appearing for the first time in almost two years and having switched stables from Martin Brassil, she was always holding Robin Des Boston to win by a length. “Hopefully, now she’ll stay sound and go for the farmers’ race at Punchestown,” Quinlan said. “We’ve been third in it twice and I’d love to win it.” Kyle Valley may have been a surprise maiden winner at Borris House before Christmas, but she proved it was no fluke by backing it up in the Michael Doyle Auctions winners-of-one for novice riders. Making all the running, the Doyen-sired six-year-old had t h e f i t n e s s e d g e ov e r t h e returning Oldtown winner Ryehill and that allowed her to gain her second career success
by three-quarters of a length. Admiral Stewart had been beaten 33 lengths into fourth place by D es er t Ian when making his debut at Ballindenisk a month ago, and the Soldier Of Fortune gelding credited his conquerors with a notable form boost after his clear-cut victory in the Winners Enclosure Bookmakers fiveyear-old geldings’ maiden. A €78,000 purchase at the 2022 Land Rover sale, Colin Bowe’s bay is now set to come up for sale again after he comfortably brushed aside the Moig South third Skuna Bay by six lengths to supply the re i g n i n g c h a m p i o n B a r r y O’Neill with his 20th success of the campaign. O’Neill had approached the final fence in the Central House older geldings’ maiden in front on Creegh Native, seemingly e n ro u t e t o c o m p l e t i n g a double, but his mount was outjumped by Class Award, who landed with the momentum to prevail by a neck for Darragh Higgins and Michael Murphy.

ENTRIES have a reference number to the horse’s last run, form figures (latest on right), owner, handler and exclusive rating (same scale as rules RPR). For penalised horses we suggest deducting half a point per pound (penalties not confirmed until race-day). Irish point-to-point entries are ordered as follows: 1 Horses whose owner has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) owner, (b) horse. 2 Horses whose handler has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) handler, (b) horse. 3 Remaining horses, ordered alphabetically. Abbreviations: B-brought down; b-baulked; C-carried out; d-disqualified; F-fell; P-pulled up; R-ran out; r-refused; S-slipped up; U-unseated rider. 8 68 9 63 10 62 11 148 12 13 107 14 142 15 16 17 115 18 129 19 20 21 115 22 141 23 24 25 606
