AVONDHU AT KNOCKANARD SUNDAY SAM CURLING’S De Nordener continued his rich vein of form with a third success of the campaign in the Coolmore and Grange Stud open over the banks course. Knockiel Synge and Midnight Maestro took the eight runners along with De Nordener always in cruise control in third spot in a race in which 24 fences were jumped. Four-year-olds are in full flow and showing all the right signs

HE four-year-old campaign is in full swing and I was very happy with my two runners at the weekend. Both came through a first test successfully, Thatsdwayimthinkin at Oldtown on Saturday and Goraibhmaithagat at Knockanard on Sunday. Thatsdwayimthinkin did it nicely. He’s a good, speedy jumper and travels well. Sometimes, it’s hard to get a definite handle on the fouryear-old form at an early stage but I take positives from this performance, such as the fact that the second, You Proof, is trained by Pat Doyle whose team is in great form, and the third is trained by Ellen Doyle, who produced the promising Idaho Valley to win at Tallow the previous Sunday. It’s a good sign in this age group when you beat horses from in-form yards, and Pat Doyle got another four-year-old win on the board thanks to the Pa King-ridden Big Cadillac at Nenagh on Sunday. Thatsdwayimthinkin is by Getaway out of Sway, whose progeny have a great record for Gavin Cromwell in the JP McManus colours. This fellow is a half-brother to Limerick Lace, winner of the Listed mares’ chase at Doncaster at Christmas after finishing second to Coko Beach in the Troytown. The dam has produced several other very useful horses, including Ulster National winner Spades Are Trumps. Goraibhmaithagat picked up well for me at Knockanard. That was a pleasant surprise because he had given me the impression at home he was more of a staying type. He showed more speed than I had seen before from him. He has a good attitude and it was a nice race to get him started. This time Ellen Doyle supplied the runner-up Starzand, and Pat Doyle had the third horse. By Flemensfirth, Goraibhmaithagat is out of a Galileo mare who won over hurdles and comes from one of the Aga Khan’s top families. The dam is a half-sister to top Flat stayer Akbar, and it’s a family that has also produced some good jumpers. Christmas meeting, and Edward O’Grady stepped him up in class in a Listed hurdle at Punchestown on Sunday. He was no match for the winner Tullyhill, but I liked the way he battled away to finish second after making a mistake at the last. Tullyhill could be exceptional. His reputation took a knock when he was well beaten on his first start over hurdles, but he won a Naas maiden easily and is now showing the sort of form you would have expected when he was second to A Dream To Share in the

Grade 1 bumper at last season’s Punchestown festival. He was produced by the Wilson Dennison-Colin McKeever team and Cormac Abernethy rode him to win a maiden at Moira in the 2022 autumn campaign. One of the big performances on the track at the weekend came from the Gavin Cromwell-trained Yeah Man in winning the Grand National Trial at Doncaster. Two seasons ago he won a maiden at Loughanmore for Cormac Doyle, with Jack Hendrick riding. On Sunday the same trainer and rider teamed up with Yeah Man’s half-brother The Jukebox Kid in the five-year-old geldings’ maiden at Tinahely. He looked promising in

scoring by 16 lengths from Achille Des Rocs, a Colin Bowe-trained gelding who was placed at Ballinaboola earlier in the month. It was a brilliant weekend for Jack Hendrick with four wins and a second from five rides. He rode two winners at Oldtown and helped Cormac Doyle complete a Tinahely double with Borna Gem, a well-related daughter of Mount Nelson, in the mares’ maiden. Four lady riders were successful at the weekend. Toni Quail continued her good partnership with Sam Curling’s De Nordener, who beat stablemate Stormy Story in the open over the banks course at Knockanard. Maxine O’Sullivan came home alone on Tracey Gilmour’s Come To Me in the Ladies’ open at Nenagh. Joanna Walton had her second win of the season on John O’Donovan’s Wise Move at Tinahely, and the same card provided a first success for 21-year-old Holly Dunne, who rode the former Henry de Bromheadtrained Plan Of Attack to win the novice riders’ open for Ben Halsall. The winning rider was placed on Plan Of Attack at Quakerstown and Borris House before Christmas and she’s built up a good partnership with him. He’s an ideal horse to give experience to a young rider since he was a high-class chaser at one stage and also ran several good races over the cross-country course at Cheltenham, including when third in the dramatic 2022 race in which Delta Work beat Tiger Roll. Last season he never found his best form, but in the same way as many talented ex-track performers, he has got a new lease of life in pointto-points, which is where he started almost seven years ago winning a maiden at Loughbrickland for the Crawfords. Another talented ex-track horse in action at the weekend was Early Doors, winner of the 2020 Galway Plate for Joseph O’Brien and also a Cheltenham Festival winner in the 2019 Martiin Pipe. Enda Bolger has him now and he felt in fine shape when I rode him to beat David Christie’s talented veteran Some Man in the open at Oldtown on Saturday. It was a pleasing display on his first run in over a year.
