Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point
Veteran Ballyboker Bridge sums up spirit of Punchestown banks
I
N LAST week’s column I mentioned how the Punchestown festival has managed to keep its links with the past while also being a perfect seasonal finale for the best of Ireland’s jumping talent. Last week’s meeting proved this really works. The Grade 1 races were of a high standard, the handicaps were as competitive as you would expect, the bumpers were strong races in which we saw some promising young horses who look like maturing into high-class jumpers. Among all that, we had three cross-country races and two hunter chases which provided great stories, confirming that these events are an important part of the attraction of the festival. Nothing summed up the spirit of these races better than the sight of Ballyboker Bridge winning the La Touche Cup at the age of 15, and the reaction of his trainer Peter Maher who has done a brilliant job in keeping him on the go. In November it will be ten years since he made his debut at Ballinaboola. What a way to end his career, giving his rider Tiernan Power Roche a success he’ll always treasure. It was a memorable week also for his fellow Wexford rider Benny Walsh who won the Ladies’ Cup on Vital Island for Richard O’Keeffe and Saturday’s Dooley Insurancesponsored race on Hurricane Darwin for Cormac Farrell. Benny really knows his way around the course. Iain Cribbin deserves credit for his winning ride on the Ted Walshtrained Jezarus in the Bishopscourt Cup. For a rider with only a small amount of point-to-pointing experience, it was a some feat to win a race in which Barry O’Neill rode the runner-up. Barry also had to settle for second when Cheltenham winner Billaway beat Vaucelet in the Irish Daily Star Champion Hunters Chase. It might have been a different story if Barry’s mount hadn’t made a bad mistake at the last. It’s hard luck on David Christie to have lost out narrowly in the big two events of the season at Cheltenham and Punchestown. On the plus side, with Winged Leader and Vaucelet, he has two strong challengers for top honours next season.

I had several good bumper rides during the week. Miss Agusta, trained by Mags Mullins, ran a brave race from the front to beat all bar the impressive Absolute Notions in the Goffs Land Rover Bumper. Peter Fahey’s Battling Bessie confirmed she is one of the best mares around in bumpers with a third in a Grade 3 event. And thankfully I got a winner on the board on the last day thanks to Gavin Cromwell’s Path D’Oroux. As Gavin said after the race, things didn’t exactly go to plan because he ran a bit too freely for me and I could never get the cover I wanted. Fortunately, he was good enough to cope. Mick Goff produced Path D’Oroux to win a maiden at Borris House last December. Meanwhile, Tag Game, who finished second to Colin Tizzard’s good chaser Amarillo Sky in a race at Borris House two seasons ago, was a good winner of another of last week’s bumpers for Henry de Bromhead and owner Roger Brookhouse. All in all, it was a fantastic week for Irish racing, with Honeysuckle the star of the show, recording her 16th
consecutive win under Rules. It came four years and one week after her debut at Dromahane in the Goffs Punchestown Sale Mares’ Maiden.
Bowe on the mark with four-year-old talent
Colin Bowe, on course to win the leading handler title for the tenth time, was the main man on the fouryear-old front at the weekend. He started off with Doyen gelding

Divilskin at Largy on Saturday and kept up the good work with two sons of Soldier Of Fortune, Chapeau De Soleil at Stowlin on Sunday, and Royal Defender at Dawstown on Monday. All three Barry O’Neill-ridden horses were appearing for the first time, completing a great week for Colin who sold the exciting Monksgrange winner Jenny Wyse for €360,000 at the Goffs Punchestown sale last Thursday. There was a lot to like about his three weekend winners. Divilskin showed a good attitude in rallying after being hampered on the approach to two out. Chapeau De Soleil impressed with his physique, and Royal Defender showed authority in winning by ten lengths without having to get a hard race. He’s out of a full sister to Kings Palace who won seven of his 15 races for David Pipe. There were also a couple of smart performances in the mares’ maidens.
Seeyouinmydreams, trained by Paul Pierce, showed a fine turn of foot in going away for a 15-length win from the Bowe-trained Sheeka Supreme at Largy. The Denis Murphy-trained Take No Chances improved from her first run at Loughanmore to beat another Bowe-trained filly Southern Babylon at Stowlin. The winner is by Milan out of Coscorrig who was a talented mare for Andy Lynch and the late Dessie Hughes, winning six races including the Listed John Fowler Memorial Mares’ Chase at Fairyhouse. Northern Irish handler Noel Hynds sent Rossea on a long journey to Dromahane for her debut and was rewarded when she made almost all to win under Eoin O’Brien. She’s by Affinisea, who is a close relation to Soldier Of Fortune, and she’s out of a half-sister to Noel Meade’s Supreme Novices’ and Christmas Hurdle winner Go Native. With such a good programme for mares these days, maiden winners like Seeyouinmydreams, Take No Chances and Rossea are likely to be popular at the sales.

TALENT SPOTTER James Murphy is relieved to be injury-free and firing in winners
S
ERIOUS OPERATOR was my sixth winner of the season at Dromahane on Sunday and it was a great family success as he’s owned by my mother Geraldine and trained by father Daniel. Growing up in a racing yard in East Cork I was always surrounded by horses. I started off on ponies when I was six or seven, but I gave up riding them when I was about ten. I just lost interest and started playing football and hurling for my local club in Lisgoold. I came back to horses three years later and got a lot of experience jumping them, which was a big draw for me. I went to pony club, hunted with the United, did showjumping and at the same time I started on the racehorses at home. Once I turned 17 I took out my licence to go point-topointing on a real yard
‘I picked up my worst injury when I broke my hip in Kirkistown’ favourite in Bothair Clei. He had been with us since he was a foal. My parents tried to sell him a few times but nobody seemed to have any interest in buying him, which worked out well for us as he was beaten by only a nose in the 2015 Leinster National. He was a very quiet horse at home, so he was a savage horse to get started on. He gave me my first winner in a novice riders’ open at Punchestown in 2018. That was just my fourth ride, and it was nice to come into the winner’s enclosure at a place like Punchestown for my first winner. He was a brilliant
horse to have to start off because he was so competitive in opens every week. I haven’t had the greatest luck with injuries since then, which has been my biggest frustration. I’ve broken my collarbone twice, the first time was from a now famous horse called Cousin Pascal at Stradbally. He went on to win the Aintree Foxhunters’ last year after we sold him.
Then I broke my collarbone again at Boulta and picked up my worst injury when I broke my hip in Kirkistown last year. I was in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for five days and had to have a fairly big operation on my hip. I was stuck on crutches for three months and was out for a good four months. Thankfully, I’ve been injury free this year and it’s been great. I’m having my
best season and I’ve been getting great opportunities from outside yards. We used to have a lot more horses at home when I was younger, we could have had 25 horses riding out, but we are going into the sales horses now, consigning under Walshtown Stables. We have only 12 riding out now, with another 15 or 16 three-year-olds. We buy foals to sell them on as three-yearolds at the store sales. This season Paul Cashman rang and asked if I would go into him a few days a week and things have taken off. I spend three days of the week with

Paul, then I spend two days with Terence O’Brien and I have a full morning at home. I also fit in schooling for anyone looking for me as best I can. I’ve had four winners for Paul this season, which has been nice as our two families go back a good bit. My father used to work in the racehorse barn for the Cashmans for 15 years and finished there about five years ago. At the start of the season I just wanted to better my previous season then, when I got my fourth winner, I thought that was it, I couldn’t see winners coming from anywhere else, but the good run has continued. James Hannon and Darragh Allen have been a great help in getting rides, bringing me schooling, and they have brought me on a lot this season. They have been very good for advice. Darragh works for Terence O’Brien, so I see him a good bit and James has plenty of experience. They are very good in putting me up for spares and I’ve a lot to thank them for. King sews up western title to seal best season PA KING became the first rider to seal title success this season when he wrapped up the w e s t e r n c ha m p i o n s h i p at Stowlin on Sunday. Nine winners was sufficient to secure the Tipperary native a second regional title, denying Rob James success for the third year running, as he came up one winner short, despite success in the Stowlin finale. For 34-year-old King, the 2008 under-21 champion, this is a second regional title having been crowned champion in the southern area in 2020. It is fitting reward for a season which has featured 26
victories nationally, already a personal best by ten winners with four weekends remaining.
Tattersalls Store Sale back to its original date
The first store sale of the year takes place on Tuesday with the Tattersalls Ireland May Store sale returning to a May date for the first time since 2019. Its introduction in 2018 p rov i d e d ha n d l e r s w i t h a longer window to prepare horses for the start of the following year’s four-year-old maiden season and was recognition of how important they had become in the purchasing
bench of the store market. In contrast to that maiden preparatory need, Paul Pierce won an April four-year-old maiden last Friday with what must have been the final threeyear-old purchased last year bound for point-to-point fields. Largy winner Seeyouinmydreams had been bought just five months earlier at the Tattersalls Ascot December sale for £10,500, having been consigned by Shade Oak Stud, home of her sire Telescope. Her catalogue page stated that although the filly had been broken in, she was sold “guaranteed untried”, making it a
fine feat of training to produce such a precocious individual.
Corrie Auchterlonie is making a difference
Cafre College has long had a strong presence on the circuit, particularly in the northern region, where the college’s horses are seen regularly in competitive action. Th e En n i s k i l l e n c o l l e g e provides students with the opportunity to undertake a number of equine-related p ro g r a m m e s w h i c h o f t e n incorporates working within their on-campus racing yard. With education at the heart
of their activities, frequent success has eluded them, which made the victor y at Largy last Friday of their Boro Melody all the more notable. Nine years had passed since the college’s last winner at Loughbrickland in April 2013. However, they have enjoyed a change of fortunes this season after Corrie Auchterlonie, an instructor at the college, took over the handler’s permit. As well as saddling that longawaited winner for the college, a first in her name, she has also produced six placed finishers from 35 runners, which marks an upturn in their fortunes.
Grennan cancelled but Punchestown added
T h e K i l k e n n y Fo x h o u n d s fixture at Grennan, due to take place this Sunday, has been cancelled due to ground conditions and becomes the fifth raceday in May to be cancelled. To combat the loss of opportunities, a card has been added on May 14 at Punchestown. It will feature two four-yearold maidens for mares and geldings, a five- and six-year-old geldings’ maiden, farmers’ hunt winners’ race, a novice riders open and a five-year-old-andupwards mares’ maiden.

Ask D’Man keeps Lalor’s hopes alive of an eighth riding title L I Z L A L O R’S h op e s of a n eighth ladies’ title were kept alive when Ask D’Man provided the record-breaking Tipperary rider with her sixth success of the season in the Balmoral Connemara Ponies ladies’ open. The Ask gelding was sent off the even-money favourite on his return to the pointing fields after a number of placed performances in hunter chases. Once overhauling Noel Kelly’s Thomas Shelby at the p e nu l t i mat e f e n c e, Dav i d Christie’s charge was always keeping Lalor’s title rival Susie Doyle and her mount Sizing Rome at bay. The five-length victory for the eight-year-old saw Lalor briefly reduce the deficit to Doyle in the ladies’ championship before her rival countered by scoring at Dawstown on Monday. Pa u l P i e r c e ’s B l a c k h a l l Stables enjoyed the first of two four-year-old winners over the weekend when the newcomer Seeyouinmydreams showed her rivals a clean pair of heels from the back straight to run out an easy winner of the Randox Health four-year-old mares’ maiden. The Telescope mare was restrained in rear by a confident Sean Staples throughout much of the contest, however once gradually introduced into the race she swiftly cut through the field and her superior speed allowed her to breeze to a 15-length victory over fellow newcomer Sheeka Supreme.
Star performance
Seeyouinmydreams produced a turn of foot that her rivals could not live with from the penultimate fence
“We fancied her a lot. She just wants nice ground,” Andy Pierce, brother of the winning handler, said. “We were hoping everything would go right because her work had been very good. She’s probably not a three-miler and more of a two-miler, that’s why we sat her in and took our time.” Some Woman came closest to matching the double-digit winning margin of Seeyouinmydreams with a 12-length success in the Downpatrick R a c e c o u r s e o l d e r m a r e s’ maiden. The well-bred Presenting mare, who is out of a half-sister to the Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Denman, came into the race having finished second four times between the flags. Her comprehensive defeat of the now three-time runner-up You No Me Too Well would therefore have to be considered a deserving victory. The Donnchadh Doyle-trained sixyear-old ensured Wicklow rider Brian Lawless had a worthwhile trip to the Antrim venue for his only ride on the card. Gerry Cosgrave has had to endure a lengthy wait for his first success of the season, however Big Reggie ensured he recorded that victory in emphatic style in the Tughans
older geldings’ maiden for novice riders. The Norse Dancer gelding wa s a b e at e n f avou r i t e at Taylorstown last month but he made amends by posting a near foot-perfect round of jumping from the front under Alex Harvey, to defeat the longabsent nine-time placed Local Rogue by ten lengths. “He was just learning on the job and a bit green in his opening runs,” the Shanrod Stables handler said. “I don’t think he liked the ground the last day because he
didn’t jump as well. He jumped much better today. He’s for sale but if he’s not sold we’ll go for a winners’ race.” The biggest upset on the card came from Boro Melody when he ended an 11-run winless spell since recording his maiden victory at Kinsale in 2020 when under the care of Tipperar y handler Eoin McDonagh. Now with Corrie Auchterlo n i e at t h e Ca f re C o l l e g e campus in Enniskillen, the nine-year-old posted his best effort for his new connections
when Brian Barry steered him to a f our-length defeat of Leading Force. The victory was a first success as a handler for Auchterlonie, who was also responsible for the thirdplaced finisher The Bolder Boy. Hav i n g f i n i s h e d s e c o n d against geldings at Stradbally three weeks earlier, Tara Line continued in the progressive vein which has been her way this season by getting her head in front on the return to mares’ company in the Killultagh Investments five-year-old mares’ maiden. Harley Dunne set out his intentions from flagfall by immediately sending the Kayf Tara mare to the front. Aidan Fitzgerald’s bay was never headed as she went on to defeat Salacia’s Storm by six lengths. “She ran well at Stradbally last time when she was beaten by a gelding, so we thought she w ould r un w ell here,” the Carlow handler said. “I joked to Harley Dunne that it would be his fault if she was beaten. She’s a lovely mare who will win plenty of races.”

KILLULTAGH, OLD ROCK & CHICHESTER AT LARGY SATURDAY
Stratford target for bargain buy Stamp Your Feet STEPHEN CONNOR had double the reasons to celebrate the victory of Stamp Your Feet in the Randox Health open, as not only did he guide the tenyear-old to success but he had also bought the Galileo gelding. Formerly trained by Enda Bolger, the five-time track winner came up for sale at the Goffs UK January sale this year when the Galway native, who is now based in Antrim, secured him for just £2,000 in a shrewd purchase. Having chased home Some Man at L oughanmore on Easter Monday, Stamp Your Feet faced a rematch with this season’s four-time winner, however when the odds-on favourite was one of a number of horses to slip-up around the bend exiting out of the back straight, the race was left wide open. That was not the end of the drama however, as Rose Of Coolbally, who was turning out for the second day in succession at the Crumlin venue, was upsides at the final fence when she parted company with her regular rider Moira McElligott. That left Stamp Your Feet to return three lengths clear of Bajan Excell. “I have a few people to thank who put him forward to me when he came up for sale and it has paid off,” Connor said. “We might have a crack at another o p e n bu t I’d l i ke t o g o t o
Stratford [for the Champion Hunter Chase] with him to see if he’s in that calibre.” The victory started a double for Stuart Crawford as the Larne handler also claimed the Tasca Tankers adjacent maiden with The Sad Shepherd. The drop into hunt company was clearly expected to produce an upturn in fortunes for the twice previously raced Yeats gelding, as he was well supported before the off. Comfortably delivering on the market confidence, Crawford’s younger brother Ben guided the bay to a four-length defeat of Fitzburg. Ian Donoghue’s Bajan Excell had come up second best to a Crawford winner, however the Tankardstown handler enjoyed better fortunes in the Randox Health mares’ winners-ofthree when So Ladylike caused something of an upset. The easy-to-back favourite Alice O’Byrne had been friendless in the ring before the off, a n d t hat w e a k n e s s i n t h e market proved to be justified when the outsider of the quartet, So Ladylike, began to get the upper hand on the climb away from the final fence to provide Garristown rider Caoimhe O’Brien with the third success of her career. With the 18-year-old Leaving Certificate student set to go to c o l l e g e l a t e r i n t h e y e a r, connections indicated the Ye at s ma re i s l i ke l y t o b e

Divilskin did not enjoy a trouble-free passage, however he had plenty in reserve to win cosily on his debut
offered for sale at Doncaster this month. Less than 24 hours after suffering a second agonising defeat in one of the season’s principal hunter chases on Vaucelet, Barry O’Neill was back among the winners when reuniting with principal supporter Colin Bowe to claim the Dennison Commercials four-year-old geldings’ maiden with Divilskin. Bowe’s Milestone Stables had suffered something of a quiet period in the age division throughout the middle part of the spring term by their high standards, however the Wexford outfit are certainly making up for lost time. The €28,000 Doyen gelding overcame being hampered around the troublesome bend out of the back straight to show a decisive turn of foot away from the final fence which allowed him to edge three and a half lengths clear of fellow newcomer Easter Junction. The result was a particularly pleasing result for the absent Bowe as he had also bought the runner-up in partnership with trainer Denis Murphy.
Fellow Wexford handler Harley Dunne has been making waves with his recent runners but his riding career has also enjoyed a renaissance in recent w e eks, as on an afternoon when he finished in the money in each of his four rides he also claimed the card’s most valuable prize, the €4,750 INHSC maiden for handlers who had not trained more than ten winners. His mount, David O’Brien’s Step Above, overcame the challenging weather to beat Nearly Wed by two and a half lengths. “I had aspergillus [a breathing
problem caused by fungal spores] in my yard up until February, and he just wasn’t seeing out his races,” O’Brien said. “We got that sorted out, gave him a break and he was good today, thank God.” There was als o Wexford success in the Randox Health five-year-old geldings’ maiden when Mark Scallan had his long journey from Cleariestown rewarded by the 17-length success of Gametime. The easy defeat by the salesbound Gatewood gelding of C h a r l i e ’s R o c k s t a r w a s a second victory of the two-day fixture for rider Sean Staples.

Rossea defies Rebel Treaty to justify confidence of Hynds BANBRIDGE-BASED ownertrainer Noel Hynds made his first visit to Dromahane a memorable one as his newcomer Rossea justified market support by making all the running under Eoin O’Brien in the Goffs UK fouryear-old mares’ maiden. Rossea was for the most part fast and accurate at her fences and she was closely attended by f e l l o w d e b u t a n t R e b e l Treaty from three out. Although Rebel Treaty joined issue with Rossea on the run-in, she just couldn’t get past the winning daughter of Affinisea and was still a neck adrift at the line. “She’s a very nice filly. We said we would come here and take on the best at a good track,” Hynds said of Rossea, whose dam is a half-sister to three-time Grade winning hurdler Go Native, and whom he shares with breeder Patrick Murphy from Mayobridge. There were several close finishes throughout the day, especially in the Killian Lynch Auctioneers four-year-old auction maiden with the judge unable to separate Paul Pierse’s Marty McFly and the Donnchadh Doyle-trained Pride Of Erin. novice-rider open races before the end of the season now.” That family success was matched by the jubilant celebrations which followed as Ha n na h Ph i l l i ps ro d e h e r father Michael’s Miss Benjo to victory by a head in the ITBA & Liffey Mills five-year-old-andupwards mares’ maiden. Th e s e ve n - ye ar- ol d ha d finished placed three times since joining current connections from Sean Doyle and she took advantage of the finalfence drama in which Littletwinklestar exited and Imperial Lough made a serious blunder.
Josh Berry and A Rated record their fourth victory this season
The 25-year-old winning rider was welcomed into the winner ’s enclosure by her parents, former champion riders Michael Philips and Lucy Townsley. “We’ve had some great sport with this mare all season,” the Nutrition and Health Science graduate said. “She always runs her race for us, so it’s great she got her head in front today. “She found loads for me late on again and she will head for a winners’ race next.” Denis Murphy was the only handler to leave the Galway venue with more than one winner, as he enjoyed a double initiated by the game victory of Take No Chances in the Tattersalls NH & Bleahen Family four-year-old mares’ maiden. Her r ider Harley Dunne closed the door on Barry O’Neill and Southern Babylon when that combination tried to
get a run up their inner to the penultimate fence from where they were able to fend off that challenge to win by a length. The Wexford rider had a far more straightforward assignment when bringing up his fourth victory of the weekend by completing the Murphy double at Stowlin on Moodofthemoment in the Goffs Property five-year-old geldings’ maiden. His chief rival Great Samourai came a cropper at the penultimate fence, a departure which left the previously disappointing Shantou gelding to take this step forward by beating the newcomer Haggard by a distance. “This fella has had us scratching our heads as we fancied him very strongly first t i m e o u t i n t h e a u t u m n ,” Murphy said.

command from after two out with Conor Moore to dismiss Talkingthetalk in the ITBA fiveyear-old and upwards mares’ maiden. James Hannon filled in for Richie Kiely by teaming up with the latter’s brother Paul Kiely to win the closing sixyear-old and upwards geldings’ maiden on The Galahad Kid, who led from after three out to beat Turnthelightsoff by a distance.

fourth success “My horses were out of form then but thankfully we’ve turned a corner since and the horse showed us his true worth today.” Having finished second to both Murphy’s winners on the card, Colin Bowe enjoyed better fortunes with Chapeau D e Soleil in the G offs UK Spring Sale & Bleahen Family f o u r- y e a r- o l d g e l d i n g s’ maiden. O’Neill always had the €50,000 son of Soldier Of Fortune to the fore, and although John Nallen’s Minella Diamond was a persistent rival throughout, Chapeau De Soleil produced a striking turn of foot on the run-in to end the race swiftly as a contest. He sprinted clear in the closing stages to justify his favourites tag by five lengths. “We’ve always held this lad in very high regard,” Bowe said.
“ He’s a g o r g e o u s - l o o k i n g horse. Barry [O’Neill] felt he’d be even better again on a more galloping track, but he liked him a lot.” The near clean sweep of success on the card for We x f o rd c o n n e c t i o n s wa s completed in the Al Hayes Motors older maiden by Donnchadh Doyle’s Ultimate Optimist. Having cost €40,000, a price tag that would exceed the typical price of an older maiden winner, the Fame And Glory gelding had made his debut at the age of six earlier in the year. The six-length victory over Tom Dreaper’s Mac Suibhne, saw the bay gelding open his account in the style which had clearly been expected of him from the outset, having been sent off as favourite for each of his three starts.
Royal Defender makes a stunning sales pitch ROYAL DEFENDER went in many notebooks after he landed a stunning victor y under Barry O’Neill in the first division of the Tattersalls NH f o u r- y e a r- o l d g e l d i n g s’ maiden. Royal Defender, who is out of a sister to Grade 2 hurdle w i n n e r Ki ng s Pa l a c e, wa s always in cruise control before easing into the lead on the incline from three out. From there the Milestone B l o o d s t o c k- o w n e d b ay powered clear between the final two fences to beat longtime leader Ioupy Collonges by ten lengths. “He’s a fine, scopey horse who should make a nice chaser,” said Bowe, who will now send him to the sales where he is sure to garner plenty of interest. Pierse Power also has a fine prospect in debutant Slade Steel, a €30,000 graduate of the s p o n s o r ’s M a y s a l e w h o showed a potent turn of foot under Sean Staples to win the second division of this same contest. The Telescope-sired Slade Steel crept into the race from four out and quickened appreciably to pick up the running after the second-last and duly b e a t S e a Inv a s i o n by t w o lengths in the colours of The Hook Head Syndicate, a sixstrong group which comprises members of the winning handler’s extended family. “Everything has always been effortless for him and ‘Puppy’ [Power] was delighted with him when he rode him in a piece of work at the Curragh a few weeks ago,” Pierce said of the sales-bound Slade Steel, who traces back to John Kiely’s New Zealand-bred Grade 1 bumper winner Sweeps Hill. S e a I n v a s i o n ’s h a n d l e r Donnchadh Doyle and rider Brian Lawless later combined to record a double, the pair instigating their brace with Thermusa in the Masterlink five-year-old mares’ maiden. Thermusa moved into the race on the inner three out, but was still three lengths adrift of the leader Baiser Inedit when Benny Walsh’s charge fell two o u t . T h e K a y f Ta r a - s i r e d Thermusa was then left clear to beat Quakerstown third True Or False by four lengths. “She’s a fine, big, straightforward mare who will improve plenty for the run and will now be sold,” Doyle said of the Monbeg Syndicate-ow ned €20,000 foal purchase who is

out of a sister to Grade 1-placed hurdler Our Ben. The Castlelands runner-up Heros De Moutiers completed the Doyle-Lawless double by l a n d i n g t h e S i n g l e t o n ’s S u p e r Va l u f i v e - y e a r - o l d g e l d i n g s’ m a i d e n , w h i c h attracted the biggest field of the day with 14 runners. Heros De Moutiers edged into a narrow advantage at the second-last and the Frenchbred maintained that to the line to account for Concetto by
half a length in a race in which a little over three lengths covered the first five home. “We b ought him as a yearling. He had a couple of grand runs and appreciated the nicer ground here today. It was a bit soft for him at Castlel a n d s ,” D o y l e s a i d o f t h e Creacadoir-sired Heros De Moutiers, another Monbeg Syndicate-owned winner now likely to be sold. The Louise Lyons-trained Golden Bald, a first-season sixyear-old, posted his third straight success with regular partner Susie Doyle in the W & M Kiely Ltd winners-of-two. Golden Bald, having made a couple of jumping errors, was overtaken by Barnaleen at the third-last.
Clearly a teak-tough sort, he rallied to overtake the likeable Barnaleen in the closing stages to win by a half-length in the colours of the absent Ms Lyons’ partner Nicky Teehan. The Robert Tyner-trained homebred newcomer Keep On Digging gave a superb display of fencing from the front to win the Blarney Castle Hotel, FBD & Pegus Horse Feeds adjacent maiden. Keep On Digging, bred by Tyner’s wife Mary and owned by her sister Catherine O’Donovan, asserted between the final two fences under Derek O’Connor to beat fellow pacesetter Trojan Five by a widening six lengths. “He’s a fine big horse who j u m p s g re a t a n d h i s d a m S t r a n g e Ta l k w a s a g o o d enough mare that won three points before getting injured,” Tyner said. Chris O’Donovan filled in for the sidelined Andy Burke Ott by landing the closing Cork Recycling Ltd older geldings’ maiden on the te enag er ’s father Alex Ott’s Inchidaly Copper. The Owen O’Flynn-owned Inchidaly Copper, second on his previous start at Stradbally, had his task eased when the pursuing Lead The Field exited two out.
