Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point

Autumn point winners already making their mark on the track

T

HE next few weeks will see a big focus on the four-year-old maidens with many promising youngsters attempting to stake their claims before a trip to the sales. The new crop has plenty to live up to. I think it’s fair to say that the reputation of Irish pointers has never been higher. From what we saw at the sales during the autumn campaign, the quality is impressive and trade is strong, One of the major success stories of 2021 was the aggregate £690,000 fetched at Tattersalls Cheltenham December sale by two maiden winners produced by Wexford handler Matthew Flynn O’Connor at the Lingstown fixture the previous weekend. Deeply Superficial, a filly by Flemensfirth, was the star of the show, bought by Mouse O’Ryan and Gordon Elliott for £385,000. Her stablemate Stay Away Fay, a Shantou gelding, fetched £305,000 and has gone to Paul Nicholls. Huge money by any standard. As we are only too aware, that is never a guarantee of success, but the early signs for Deeply Superficial are encouraging. Mullenbeg, a Michael Butlertrained filly who finished ten lengths second at Lingstown, was picked up by Milton Harris for 42,000gns at an online sale in mid-December. She made a good impression when beating a subsequent winner in a bumper at Ludlow and backed that up by winning the Listed mares’ bumper at Cheltenham at the end of last month, a race won last season by the talented Eileendover. The mares’ maiden at Turtulla in November is also working out well. That event was a triumph for Richard Morrissey, from Dungarvan, with his home-bred Notnowcato filly Rockonsoph, who made all under James Hannon to beat the Sean Doyle-trained Roc Of Dundee and was subsequently bought by the much-respected Gerry Hogan for £95,000 at the Goffs Sale at Yorton. Roc Of Dundee has done her bit for the form since purchased by Donald McCain for a relatively bargain £30,000 at the same Yorton sale. Just like Mullenbeg, she is unbeaten in two bumpers, winning

GROSSICK RACING (RACINGPOST.COM/PHOTOS)

The Denis Murphy-trained winner Present Soldier and the placed horses, Arctic Bresil (Sean Doyle) and Master Chewy (Pat Doyle), beaten three-quarters of a length and the same, fetched an aggregate £905,000 at public auction. I rode the favourite An Mhi in that race for Gordon Elliott, and we finished fourth. Gordon and Mouse bought the winner, the runner-up was a Gerry Hogan purchase, and the third has found a very good home with the Twiston-Davies team. Mister Chewy is the only one of the trio to have appeared on the track so far and there will be no panic after his narrow defeat in a Chepstow bumper. The winner, Sporting Ace, second to the promising Grangeclare West in a maiden at Lingstown in November 2020, already had two bumper outings under his belt.

N Mullenbeg delights jockey Mitchell Bastyan with victory in the Listed mares’ bumper at Cheltenham last month

at Wetherby last month and defying a penalty at Ascot last Saturday. With any luck, she should do well over jumps. She’s a half-sister to Ben Dundee, who has won three races and finished second to School Boy Hours in the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown at Christmas. The overall standard in mares’ maidens during

‘My Silver Lining, produced by Donie Hassett, has joined Emma Lavelle and is a novice hurdle winner at Lingfield’

the autumn was high. It’s good to see some of them making an immediate impact on the track in Britain. Others who spring to mind are Plenty Of Time and My Silver Lining, who fought out a good battle at Rathcannon in October. I rode Plenty Of Time for Sam Curling that day and liked her a lot. Tom Malone bought her for £75,000 and she seems to have settled in well with Harriet Brown in Dorset. She was second to a bumper-winning gelding at Wincanton on her first start over hurdles and got off the mark with a wide-margin win in a mares’ race at the same venue at the beginning of the month. My Silver Lining, produced by Donie Hassett, has joined Emma Lavelle, and is a recent novice hurdle

winner at Lingfield. She is a halfsister to Ink Master, who won nine races over jumps in Britain after starting his career at Dromahane. There’s a good programme for mares in Britain and Ireland. At home, the top stables have things pretty much sewn up when it comes to the Graded races, but our mares’ maidens are proving an important source for a wide range of trainers and owners across the water. Headline acts are just that, there’s only one Honeysuckle and a small number of genuinely top-class mares. More important, in overall terms, is that we’re producing plenty of good mares for a solid middle tier of competition. Of course, the sales-toppers are hugely significant in promoting the sport. When it comes to the geldings, you can’t ignore the importance of high-profile maidens such as the one at Tattersalls Farm in November.

ATURALLY, the fouryear-old maiden winners attract the most attention, but we shouldn’t forget that point-to-points cater for slowermaturing types as well. A good example during the autumn campaign was Grey Skies, a five-year-old trained by Liam Casey. I rode him in a maiden at Dromahane in November in which he finished only sixth behind Captain Broomfield, who has since joined the Lavelle team. Grey Skies returned to Dromahane at the end of December and opened his account. He was a 12-1 winner of a maiden hurdle at Uttoxeter on his first outing for Donald McCain and won again at Kelso last week, impressing as a horse with a future over staying trips. Meanwhile, Forpaddytheplumber, the horse I rode into second behind Captain Broomfield, was good enough to win a Haydock bumper on his first start for McCain. As for Captain Broomfield, he was unfortunate to run into the highclass McCain recruit Jungle Jack at the same venue on his first start for the Lavelle yard. Now three from three over hurdles, Jungle Jack won his only point-topoint start for champion handler Colin Bowe. Just another of the many promising horses advertising the merits of Irish point form in recent weeks.

TALENT SPOTTER Dan Nevin reveals how his ambition has always been to become a jockey

B

OTH my parents have worked in racing and still do, my father is over in England and works at Godolphin Stud and my mother works in the office for Jim Bolger. I grew up with ponies but I have three older sisters so I was always getting the leftovers of their ponies when they were getting new ones! Since I could talk all I’ve wanted is to become a jockey, there was never going to be anything else. It was that or nothing. When I was in transition year at school I went to work for Jane Foley at Ballyhane Stud. She had Flat horses, breezers and a couple of National Hunt horses, and that is where I had my first introduction with thoroughbreds. I was there for about a year and then I moved to Willie Mullins. That was my first proper racing yard to work in. I was thrown in at the deep end, but sure it made me the person I am now. You had the best of

‘No better place to learn’ – Willie Mullins yard was the perfect introduction

jockeys there and they would be helping you along, teaching you all the time – there was no better place to learn. I was working weekends in Willie’s during fifth year when I decided to drop out of school and work there full time. School was never for me and racing is all I wanted, so it was a good move in my eyes. I spent two great years there and then one day Harley Dunne rang me out of the blue to offer me a job with him. I knew Harley was riding away but I didn’t know him personally at the time, but he told me he would do what he could for me to help me along the way and, to be fair to Harley, he stood to his word. He got me going in point-topointing and gave me all the experience I needed, getting me in with the right people

and he really set me on the right road. If it wasn’t for Harley I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in today. It was Harley who put me in contact with Tom Power, who has been a massive supporter. I’ve had a lot of rides for Tom. It’s a small bunch of horses he has, but I’ve ridden a few winners for him now. I rode my first ever winner for Tom on a mare called Lawlor’s Choice at Tinahely and it was great to have my first winner for him because himself and Annette Lawlor love the game. They work very hard and they have been top

class all the way with me. That first winner was in February 2020 and I’ve improved my total each season since. When Covid stopped point-topointing last year I decided to go out to America to work for Keri Brion. Two days before I was due to fly I rode my first track winner for Keri aboard Scorpion’s Revenge at Cork. It was the best way to start the trip and it proved the experience of a lifetime. I won the $60,000 Maryland Hunt Cup, a four-mile race over timber fences on Vintage Vinnie, and I ended up riding

two more track winners and one in a point-to-point there. If I hadn’t gone over I would have absolutely regretted it and it’s something I’d love to go back to do all over again. Just before I was due to come home, Mick Murphy rang me and told me he had a job for me if I wasn’t going back to Harley. I came home and went down to him, had a look around the place and talked it through with him and we have been going great guns since. Mick said if I came here and did the work I’d be riding the horses, and he’s stood to his word. I’ve ridden nearly everything there. He’s had three winners so far this season and a lot knocking on the door so it’s been good to see the horses running so well. It’s already my best season. It’s absolutely brilliant but an

NEWS AND VIEWS

absolute killer at the same time because I’ve had 13 seconds and eight third-place finishes. It’s good to see all the horses running well but as a jockey finishing second all the time can be frustrating. All I do is think to myself what if those 13 second-place finishes were winners, we would be flying. That’s just the way it goes sometimes. I am second on the under-21 leaderboard and that’s my aim for the season; it would be great to have that on the CV. I was leading for a while and now I’ve gone two behind but that gives me determination to drive on and work harder to get back in front. All we can do is our best, keep the head down and work hard. HRB quick to reschedule lost meetings LAST weekend’s programme was torn apart by the storms with three of the four fixtures claimed by waterlogging. The Island Hunt fixture at Ballycrystal was the only meeting to survive the high winds and heavy rain to avoid a complete washout of the weekend programme. Full credit has to be given to that committee and their band of volunteers for braving the elements in tricky conditions to complete the six-race card. The IHRB has swiftly announced new dates for last weekend’s cancelled fixtures, with Kildorrery the first to be rescheduled. It will now take place this Saturday, with the original 114 entries remaining in place. Fresh entries will be taken for Nenagh on its new date of March 13. The North Tipperar y Foxhounds were unfortunate as their fixture had survived an inspection on Saturday afternoon before further heavy rain fell on the morning of the fixture on Sunday which left the track unraceable. The replacement date on the Sunday before the Cheltenham Festival was made possible by the Tipperary Harriers having brought their fixture forward to race last month at Turtulla. The Ward Union were not as fortunate with their fixture at

HEALY RACING

All six races were completed at the weekend’s sole surviving fixture at Ballycrystal including this five-year-old geldings maiden

Oldtown having to be cancelled for the second weekend in succession due to waterlogging and it will not be rescheduled.

Tricky for trainers to qualify for Cheltenham

Those weekend weather woes have left some trainers facing an anxious last-minute bid to

gain qualification for the Cheltenham Festival hunter chase. Sunday is the final day in the qualification window to meet eligibility criteria for the hunter chase season focal point. For those seeking to meet entry criteria with point-topoint results, either two open victories or a combination of

one open win and finishing either first or second in a hunter chase since October 2019 are required, which will put additional emphasis on this weekend’s open action. Opportunities since the turn of the year have not been as plentiful as may have been expected for the time of the

year due to a combination of insurance and weather issues. This is emphasised by all five of this weekend’s fixtures featuring an open lightweight, in contrast to just ten races in total in the division taking place in the last eight weeks. The additional opportunities should dilute what has been a

robust level of quality in the division to provide greater chances for those horses who may have been falling short in the category this season. L a st Su n d ay ’s f i xtu re at Nenagh was due to host the first four-year-old auction maiden of 2022 – races restr icted to those horses purchased at the store sales last summer for €25,000 or below. These races have struggled to gain traction in the spring term and the Nenagh race continued that trend, attracting an entry of ten from six handlers. The inclusion of the race on the Nenagh programme had generated discussion, particularly among handlers, who raised the programming of these races during the spring season at last year’s annual review meeting that had followed the conclusion of the 2020/21 season. On the back of that represent at i o n f ro m ha n d l e r s, t h e INHSC confirmed the number o f f o u r- y e a r- o l d a u c t i o n maiden races would drop to four for the spring term. How e v e r, t hat e x p e c t e d reduction has not been borne out in the provisional summary, with Sunday’s race due to be followed by races at Tyrella, Rathcannon, Monksgrange, Dromahane and Ballingarry.

‘Peach of a ride’ from Lawless as Ifeoinly stuns rivals THE arrival of three storms in four days was not enough to scupper the plans of the Island committee whose Ballycrystal fixture was the only Irish pointto-point meeting to survive last w e e k e n d . T h e m e e t i n g ’s survival enabled Brian Lawless to partner the sixth double of his career. His first success came when Ifeoinly upset two of her more fancied rivals, The Forge Hill and La Feline, in the Combined Garages mares’ open to ensure it worked out a worthwhile trip from Athea for Limerick handler Eoin McCarthy. The lightly raced eight-yearold Ifeoinly had already proved herself in soft ground and a c o m m e n d ab l e m ove f ro m Lawless to set sail for home on the climb from the third-last fence was rewarded when she became just the sixth horse to record three victories this season with this two-and-ahalf length defeat of course winner The Forge Hill. “I’m delighted for her owner Brendan Walsh as that’s her third of the season,” McCarthy said. “I thought Brian gave her a peach of a ride. He was very good on her and got the fractions right. “We’ll stick between pointto-points and hunter chases for the rest of this season.” Wicklow native Lawless then teamed up with his father Gerard to complete his double when newcomer Red Ford Lad belied his inexperience to take the Denis Murphy Ballyboy Stables & Sean Doyle Monbeg Stables older maiden. The Court Cave gelding, a € 2 , 0 0 0 a c q u i s i t i o n by t h e winning rider, outbattled Peter Flood’s Benjamin Braddock by four lengths. After seeing his advantage in t h e r i d e r s’ c ha mp i o n s h i p whittled to a solitary winner by Rob James on the previous weekend, Barry O’Neill responded with a double on home turf. It began when he led home a one-two for Colin Bowe in the

Screws and More Ltd, Tattersalls NH & Gain Equine Nutrition four-year-old maiden on Sleeping Satellite. The son of Mahler, who had been bought by the Milestone Stables operator for just £13,000 last year, took over from his stablemate Puddlesinthepark after the final fence to win by two lengths on his debut. “He’s a lovely, professional horse. He was supposed to go t o Ne n a g h t o d a y a n d t h e second horse was coming here, so I’ve probably cost myself a winner,” Bowe said of his third four-year-old maiden winner this month. “He’s straightforward. Barry said he just ran around a little in front, but he’s a nice horse.” The five-time champion rider was at his best when he teamed up with Vincent Halley’s Mizuma to land the Baltimore Stables winner-ofone contest. O’Neill’s saddle had slipped on the seven-year-old which meant all his balance and strength was required to maintain the partnership up the run-in, and his skill was rewarded as the pair held off the locally trained Hector Jaguen by three-quarters of a length in a slow-motion finish. After sponsoring that winners’ contest, the Baltimore Stables team of siblings Ellen and James Doyle managed to get on the scoreboard themselves as they provided Birr native Eoin Middleton with his first success in the saddle when Well P stepped up to take the Codds Kilrush five-year-old geldings’ maiden. An encouraging fourth in vastly different conditions at Ballinaboola on his stable

debut this month, he was always to the fore in the race which produced the biggest field of the day with 13 runners, and he clung on from the fastfinishing Blue Fin to win by half-a-length. “Eoin owns him with his father Patrick and he started working for us in the summer. When he came he brought the horse with him and he has done all the schooling with the horse to have him ready for today,” locally based James Doyle said. “I’m delighted Eoin has got his first winner. He’s only 18 and he will keep riding the horse in winners’ company; that’s one way for young riders like him to get experience.” The Orhre–O’Reilly Hyland Real Estate mares’ maiden produced a similarly close finish when Robert Tector’s mare Rock The Hill provided the Rathnure handler with his third victory of the campaign. The Shirocco mare showed the benefit of her Lingstown introduction before Christmas, as two assured jumps in the home straight helped her on her way to a three-quarter length defeat of the back-toform Lingstown runner-up Some Woman.

The field in the five-year-old geldings maiden won by Well P kick up plenty of mud at a meeting that did well to survive the weekend’s storms
