Russell to be guest of honour at Inch DAVY RUSSELL and Tiger Roll adorned the front pages of most Sunday papers on both sides of the Irish Sea after their second successive win in the Randox Health Grand National. The size of the achievement by the former champion novice point-to-point rider may have fully sunk in when the Youghal native is guest of honour at next Wednesday’s Inch point-to-point. The 39-year-old learned his craft on the southern circuit before joining the professional ranks and he will undoubtedly prove popular at this fixture, which is celebrating 25 years at this location. The hugely popular Easter holiday fixture will play host to its usual attractions for families, while organisers will water the course if necessary to ensure safe ground to attract high-quality runners. In 2017, graduates from the fixture fetched more than €1m at subsequent sales.

Veteran On The Fringe still in the limelight

On The Fringe has undoubtedly been the hunter chaser of his generation, as his record in the Foxhunters at Cheltenham and Aintree shows and there is no sign of the veteran falling out of love with the game on the evidence of his latest success at Rathcannon. Now a 14-year-old, the gelding

was reunited with Aine O’Connor, who is unbeaten on him, and the pair picked up where they left off last season with victory in a Listowel hunter chase with success in the open lightweight. Although three years have passed since the last of On The Fringe’s spring trebles on the big stages at Cheltenham, Aintree and Punchestown, his love of racing has clearly not diminished, with this 15th career success. Owner JP McManus witnessed the victory, for which particular credit is due to trainer Enda Bolger, who has had On The Fringe under his care throughout his career. Considering he made his debut a decade ago in a four-year-old maiden at Dromahane, it is no mean feat to sustain a horse’s enthusiasm for racing across a ten-year period and he proved a treat for all those who saw him.

Nationwide focus on big-priced pointers

Last month’s Liscarroll meeting was the star of Friday’s Nationwide programme which provided a welcome piece high lighting the positives of the sport to a wider, non-racing audience. A nyo n e w h o m i s s e d t h e broadcast can watch it on-demand on the RTE Player. Friday’s broadcast was timely as it went out 24 hours after the

are becoming more commonplace, one four-year-old is beginning to look particularly good value in the context of those prices despite fetching £160,000. Borris House winner Sporting John was snapped up by Kieran McManus at the Cheltenham Festival sale after his debut success and the form of the race has received notable boosts over the last two weekends. Third-placed Vandemere was a seven-length winner at Portrush ten days ago, while fourth-placed Direct Fire became the latest winner to emerge from the race in the space of a month when he provided Brian Hamilton with his first winner in Gigginstown House colours at Moira on Saturday.

The attention attracted by fouryear-old maidens is unsurprising considering the headlines they continue to make on the track and in the sales ring. However, it was particularly pleasing on Sunday at CastletownGeoghegan to see local successes in the adjacent hunt race and older geldings’ maiden proved most popular with racegoers. Star Wizard carried the colours of the fixture’s clerk of the scales Hugh Mulvihill into the winner’s enclosure for the fourth time in the hunt race, while Thomas

Tormey won the concluding race with his home-bred ten-year-old Another Island, who had made his debut only a fortnight earlier at Durrow. Both men were surrounded by well-wishers who wanted to pass on their congratulations, ending the fixture on a high note.

Sisters come close to a remarkable success

Siblings Ballela Stor m and Annieguire almost pulled off the most unusual achievement of winning their maidens on the same weekend. The former became the latest winner produced by her unraced Mandalus dam, Ballela Girl, when a five-length winner of the mares’ maiden at Moira on Saturday for Ross McLeigh and Caroline McCaldin. Twenty-four hours later it was the turn of her Jeremy-sired halfsister, who is a year younger, to make her competitive debut in the four-year-old mares’ maiden at Rathcannon. The black filly, who was bought for €28,000 by the Monbeg team a year earlier, briefly held the advantage after the last under Jordan Gainford, but was reeled in and had to settle for a close second. That denied the Liam Cosgravebred pair one of the more unusual doubles this season.

Direct Fire ignites new era with Gigginstown win for Hamilton BRIAN HAMILTON saddled his first winner for Gigginstown House Stud when Direct Fire took the opening Dennison Commercials Ltd four-year-old maiden at the second time of asking. Four t h on his debut in a competitive maiden at Borris House, the son of Yeats was given a positive ride by Declan Lavery, before quickening to see off the strong challenge of Berties Girl, the only mare in the line-up, by two-and-a-half lengths. The well-bred gelding cost €65,000 at the Land Rover Sale last summer and has a pedigree to match his performance, as he is a half-brother to several winners including Mr Mole. Hamilton said: “He’s a gorgeous horse and I’m delighted with that. Whoever he moves to now is getting a lovely type. Philippa Baird, who bred the horse, worked for me a few years ago.” Tipperary owner Pat Coffey saw his silks carried to comprehensive victory by The Mulcair in the Albert Bartlett five-year-old geldings’ maiden. The son of Flemensfirth was not winning out of turn having shown potential in two four-yearold maidens last spring. Out of a half-sister to Imperial Commander, the Denis Murphytrained bay accounted readily for the previously placed Big Leg Up

Direct Fire quickened well to win his second start with minimum fuss and is a decent prospect under rules by five-and-a-half lengths. As the handler was absent, winning rider Luke Murphy said: “He’s a lovely horse but just needed a bit of time and they were patient with him. He is a big immature horse and will come on for that today. He could head to the sales now.” It was a day for first winners, with three riders getting off the mark, including Brid O’Neill in the concluding Wilsons Auctions winner-of-three on Alkaa Lion. The Wicklow-native has ridden the ten-year-old all season and this was a deserved success for the son of Alkaadhem, having already filled second spot twice. Never too far away from the lead, the bay stayed on gamely to see off the attentions of Vinnies Nephue by three lengths. “I’m delighted for Brid to get her first winner,” winning ownertrainer Peter McCreery said. “She’s been working with me for the last 11 years. He’s a great horse for her to ride, so we’ll keep him pointing now.” The Tullyraine House Stud & Tullyraine Equine Clinic five-yearold and upwards mares’ maiden

saw Downpatrick-native Ross McLeigh land his first career success aboard the Katherine Acheson-owned Ballela Storm. The five-year-old was getting off the mark at the sixth time of asking having unseated last time at Kirkistown when running well. She made no mistake here, coming home five lengths clear of the Derek O’Connor-ridden Fyfin Patsy, having been up with the pace throughout. With handler Caroline McCaldin away eventing with her daughter at Tyrella, her husband Alan said: “She showed a gear towards the finish that we hadn’t seen before. She has grown and got stronger throughout the winter. We’ll have a chat with the owners to see where we go next.” It was a red-letter day for Oran McGill, who steered home his first winner on his own Milan Flyer in the Alexander Mills Open. The novice rider was getting off the mark on only his fourth attempt, having finished a fine third on the 13-year-old a week earlier at Portrush. Having won this corresponding race last season, the son of Milan cut out much of the running on this occasion to see off Horendus Hulabaloo by a length. It was a family affair as the winner is trained by the rider’s father Gary McGill, who said: “He’s a grand horse and it’s great

for Oran to get his first winner on him. “Soft ground is the key to him and when we got rain during the week I was delighted. Providing the ground remains on the soft side we’ll keep him pointing.” In the Dalzells Electrical older geldings’ maiden there was a fourth success this season for Luke McGuinness on the Rodney Arthur-owned and trained Duty Calls. The six-year-old was getting off the mark at the tenth attempt,

having shaped with promise on a number of previous runs. Fourth on his most recent start at Armagh, the son of Arcadio was given a fine waiting ride by the Meath rider before cruising clear of the field to win by 15 lengths, with Devour filling the runner-up spot under Richie Deegan. “He’s run a few good races in defeat and got the rub of the green. He’s a smashing big horse and is a great mover. I’ll hopefully sell him now,” Arthur said.

ISLAND AT COURTOWN SUNDAY

Moonlit Wings flies home in style for Latta WEXFORD riders Rob James and Shane O’Rourke shared the day’s highlights with a double each at a well-attended meeting. The first of James’s successes came in the Stone Solutions and Park Engineering five-and-sixyear-old mares’ maiden on the impressive Moonlit Wings. Handled by Andrew Latta from B a l lyc a r n e y, We x fo rd , t h e favourite ran out a comfortable six-length winner over the Colin Bowe-trained Princess Cave, with winning owner Tommy James and his family on hand to greet the victor. The daughter of Presenting had finished an eyecatching fourth on her debut at Ballinaboola and stepped up for a comprehensive victory. The winning handler, who had also saddled a runner-up earlier on the card said: “She’s a really good mare who we have always liked, but she came back very sick after her run at Balinaboola. The James family who own her have been great supporters of mine, so I’m delighted to get a win for them. She’ll head to the sales.” James completed his double on Longhouse Music in the Casey Enterprises and Connollys Red Mills mares’ open for Sam Curling. Owned by John Duggan, it was a seventh success for the season’s leading mare as she joined Kruzhlinin at the top of the

Moonlit Wings was a class above her rivals as she ran out a comprehensive winner at just the second time of asking Champion Pointer leader board. The daughter of Gamut ran out a comfortable ten-length winner to beat the John Walsh-trained Loggan Lady. “She’s the type of mare you could run every week, it doesn’t take a bother out of her. We’ll stay going down this road now, as she’s joint with Kruzhlinin to be champion horse, then she might go fo r a c h a s e d u r i n g t h e summer,” Duggan said. Shane O’Rourke landed the first of his two winners in the Tattersalls Ireland Cheltenham April Sale four-year-old maiden on Crack Du Ninian. The French-bred gelding was winning at the first time of asking for Pierce Power, who had four days earlier saddled Burning Ambition to finish second in the Aintree Foxhunters. The winning son of Le Houssais made all to beat Cormac Doyle’s Young Offender, having been left clear at the last when Donnchadh Doyle’s Mackenburg fell when upsides. Owned by Una Lawlor, the winner is now sales bound. “He did it the hard way there.

I think he’s an out-and-out galloper and is tough as nails. Una is a good supporter of mine and that’s the first winner they’ve had. Her son Fergus is a good mate of mine, so we’re chuffed,” Power said. O’Rourke doubled up in the Goffs Punchestown Sale five-yearold geldings’ maiden on Five Star Getaway for Shirley Berry. The son of Getaway got off the mark at the second time of asking having pulled up at Knockanard in February, as he got the better of Latta’s Doubleubee for Barry O’Neill. The winning handler’s husband Johnny Berry said: “We always thought a fair bit of him. He had one run down in Knockanard and he wasn’t right, his bloods were completely wrong afterwards. He looks a big staying chaser and’ll probably head to the sales now. My cousin John Berry owns a bit of him with us.” The season’s leading rider managed to go one better in the Kenneth Davies Tree Surgeon six-year-old and upwards maiden on Sadhbh’s Delight. The Kieran Roche-trained daughter of Doyen eased clear of her rivals to land an eight-length success over the recent Ballyragget faller Carrig Hill. The John McCabe-owned winner scored on her 14t h attempt after placing five times.

Baptism Of Fire hits top gear in debut win Eoghain Ward assesses winning performances at the weekend meetings

Saturday April 6

Direct Fire (91+) was aided by some particularly bold leaps inside the final mile as he overcame the challenge of the potentially smart mare Berties Girl (83+) from the last to win going away. The Mulcair (88+) looked a sound stayer as he had only to be pushed out to win snugly on his return from a 14-month absence. Ballela Storm (76+) made a bold bid to kick on climbing out of the back straight and that enterprising move proved decisive as she powered clear from the home bend, building an unassailable advantage. It will be interesting when she takes on fellow winners. Milan Flyer (101) was given an aggressive front-

running ride to his recent effort at Portrush. On this occasion his connections reaped the reward for taking advantage of his staying ability as he found plenty to prevail in a protracted battle up the home straight. Duty Calls (82+) has plenty of experience behind him in competitive younger maidens, and so his connections, perseverance was rewarded. Alkaa Lion (89+) may now be a ten-year-old, however he has run some fine races in defeat this season, including at Ballyragget and Belharbour, and so was a deserving winner of an average winner-of-three race.

Sunday April 7

Baptism Of Fire (90+) had seemed held in fourth jumping the fourth-last. However, as the principals began to tire he struck top gear to stay on relentlessly. Crack Du Ninian (88+) was lef t clear by the fall of the challenging Mackenberg (88x) and just held on in a slowly run contest. M o o n l i t W i n g s (80+)

travelled with particular ease into the race, and began to stamp her authority from the last in the manner of a wellabove-average mare. Five Star Getaway (89+) took lengths out of his rivals at each fence on the final circuit in an assured round of jumping. He will be seen to best effect when launched over fences on the track. Costalotmore (96++) was more than a class above his rivals as he dismissed them with the minimum of fuss. A bright track career awaits. Longhouse Music (95++) dominated what turned out to be an ordinary race once the ground went against her chief rival. Sadhbh’s Delight (76++) took on geldings for the first time in this sphere, as she gained what was a long overdue maiden success to follow up five placed efforts this season. She should have little trouble moving into w i n n e r s ’ c o mp a ny. More ratings, page 7

Winning handler Kieran Roche said; “She’s a consistent mare. I’m delighted for her owner John McCabe, who is a great supporter of mine. “James Walsh would have ridden her but he’s out this weekend with concussion. She

deserved that. We’ll now go for a winners’ race.” Winning rider-handler Mark Scallan recorded a second consecutive success wit h Costalotmore in the Ire-Wel Pallets and Mr Chris Hattom winner-of-one race.

The son of Primary came home a clear of eventual runner up Singing Banjo, who is trained and owned by John Walsh. Owned by Desmond Ellard, the five-year-old was following up his stylish success at Lingstown. Scallan said: “He’s a very good horse and still improving. The form is standing up from the maiden he won at Lingstown and I’ll leave it up to the owners, but we might sell him.” The f ir st division of t he Tattersalls Ireland Cheltenham April Sale four-year-old maiden race was a strongly run race which saw €48,000 sales graduate Baptism of Fire and Jamie Codd come out on top for Denis Murphy. The son of Jeremy produced a late challenge to beat the Colin Bowe-trained Tupelo Mississippi by a head. The winner, who is also owned by Murphy, will head to the sales now. “He probably looked a little too well in the ring, another couple of weeks wouldn’t have gone astray on him, but he just rattled home. His work was unreal; you’ll hear a lot about this lad,” said Murphy.

WESTMEATH AT CASTLETOWN-GEOGHEGAN SUNDAY

Some Are Lucky bounces back after Foxhunter disappointment THE Grenville Arms Barbour Cup open novice riders’ race went to Some Are Lucky who landed his fifth success of the season for owner-handler Sam Curling under Gerry Spain. He ran out an impressive tenlength winner of the eight-runner race, getting the better of the Rory O’Meara-handled pacesetter Sound Money. Some Are Lucky made it as far as the 11th fence in the Cheltenham Foxhunters last month and now looks set to remain pointing for the rest of the season. Curling said: “That was mighty. He is an ideal open horse and just really loves it. Gerry gets a great spin out of him and we’ll keep him point-to-pointing for the rest of the season.” Fergal Stack secured success in the six-year-old and upwards geldings’ maiden on Another Island. The son of Turtle Island, who is the first foal out of Ramble Home, beat the Ciaran Murphytrained Fiddler of Dooney by three-quarters-of-a-length. The ten-year-old winner, who is bred, owned and handled by Thomas Tormey, made his debut two weeks previously when unseated in the seven-year-old and upwards geldings’ maiden at Durrow. Tormey said: “I gave him his first run at Durrow and he was just unlucky, and got unseated at the first. If I’d got that run into him I would have fancied him more coming here, but he’s a tough horse. I have all the breeds

The winner, who was given a patient ride by Quinlan, making good progress from the fourthlast in a strongly run race to beat Diamond Grove by four lengths. The runner up, who was locked in a battle with the winner from the second-last, was ridden by Derek O’Connor for Ellmarie Holden. The winning son of Stowaway, who was making hiss debut in the ten-runner race, cost €14,000 as a store. “Cormac said th he horse had loads of speed and that I did dn’t need to rush. He wass green from the back of thee third-last, but when I gave him m a squeeze, I ended up getting their t way too soon. “They went very quick q early on, but he has loads of class and plenty of speed. I would w say on better ground he will be an even nicer horse,” said the winning rider. Liz Lalor came on o top in the Goffs Punchestown Sale S five-year-

old geldings’ maiden on Fully Charged. Trained by her father Dick Lalor and owned by her mother Anne, the son of Fair Mix got the better of the Denis Murphy-trained Eurowork at the back of the last. The recent Durrow runner-up is now set to be offered for sale. “He’s tough. He’s so big that it just took him a while to come to himself. It was only the week before Durrow that he really started coming to form and you could feel him bouncing under neat h you,” said t he winning rider. Success in the Tullaghansleek Stud Adjacent Hunt winners race went to Star Wizard under Anthony Fox for Peter Flood. Owned and bred by the fixture’s clerk of the scales, Hugh Mulvihill, the eight-year-old was one of only two horses left in the race going circuit on to the final circuit.

He eased clear going to the second-last and went on to become a 20-length winner over Gemma Dewhurst’s Nineteensixteen. The race lost much of its interest when joint favourite Donjon came a cropper at the first fence. “It was unfortunate that Donjon fell early, but our lad has been flying of late so we thought he would go close. Up in Tyrella the last day the ground went against him and he hated it. “He’s after winning four races for us now and we’ll try and get him into a hunter chase,” said winning handler Flood of his now four-time winner. A Different World shows his class with narrow win DECL AN QUEALLY was the leading rider at the meeting, partnering two winners after opening his account in the Cork & Waterford Trainers older geldings’ maiden on the Debbie Hartnett-trained Exit Eleven. Runner-up on his previous start at Nenagh in mid-February, the gelding disputed the running after a mile until edging ahead after four-out. Exit Eleven was always in command from that point and stormed clear from two out to beat Gold Sun by ten lengths. “Declan was very positive on him and he jumped well. He’s a lovely big horse and perhaps we could now run him in a hunter chase,” said the winning handler of Exit Eleven, who is owned by Joe Walsh from Mullinavat in County Kilkenny.

A Different World showed a very likable attitude in the closing stages to fend off the challenge of another smart looking runner. He could be exciting under rules

Rob Royal brought up the Queally double with a pillar-topost success in the closing race, the Goggins Hill Knackery and Member s of Killeady Hunt adjacent maiden. Robert Tyner’s grey, who fell on his only two previous starts, got into a lovely rhythm in front and the sweet-jumping sevenyear-old asserted from two out to beat Red Vita by six lengths. Tyner said of his wife Mary’s winner: “He has been somewhat frustrating, but he’s had a few

niggly issues. He has that bit of class about him and he’ll probably now go for a bumper.” While Derek O’Connor was in action at bot h CastletownGeoghegan and Fairyhouse, the Galwegian’s wife Carol O’Donnell was present to see her colours carried to success by newcomer A Dif ferent World in the opening Cork and Waterford trainers four-year-old geldings’ maiden. The gelding, trained by Derek’s brother Paurick, was always well positioned and the son of Jeremy moved through under Eoin Mahon to overtake the wellsupported Commit Or Quit on the run to the final fence. There was ittle to separate the pair but A Dif ferent World maintained a narrow advantage to the line to win by half a length.

The pair returned 18 lengths clear of the third-placed Quirt Evans. The winner is an full brother to Manofthemoment, who won a fo u r- ye a r- o l d m a i d e n a t Loughrea last year and has since made his mark over hurdles for Tom George. It is probable that A Different World, a €9,000 graduate of last year’s Goffs Land Rover sale, will be offered for sale. There was yet another close finish in the eight-runner Cork and Waterford trainers five-yearold geldings ’ maiden wit h newcomer Doyen Dancer winning under his handler Denis Hogan’s 19-year-old cousin Jack. Remedy Z set out to make all and still held a fract i o n al advantage when erring at the last. The Doyen-sired winner, who did well to survive a notable

blunder at the fifth fence, was in full f low and the Raymond Treacy-owned bay surged to the fore on the flat to account for Remedy Z by a half-length. A little under two lengths covered the first four home. The physically imposing Doyen Dancer is a half-brother to Grade 2 novice hurdle winner Real Steel. Shane Baragry partnered a fourth winner of the season by joining forces with Donie Murphy to triumph on newcomer Velkera in the 13-runner Gain Horse Feeds & Clona Dairies five and six-year-old mares’ maiden contest, the race that attracted the biggest field of the afternoon. The well-supported Wouldubewell appeared to make the decisive move by edging ahead after the second-last. However, the triumphant

daughter of Sholokhov forged to the front on the f lat to beat Wouldubewell. The mare is owned by Jeff Murphy, who said: “Velkera is a lovely mare who I bought from Donie Murphy’s brother Matt as a three-year-old and there will be plenty of improvement in her.” The Crossbarry Inn Open saw the Eugene O’Sullivan-trained It Came To Pass supplemented for last month’s Lismore victory by sauntering home under the handler ’s daughter Maxine O’Sullivan. The half-brother to former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Lord Windermere won by four lengths from Timewaitsfornoone. “He showed a bit of class and he’s qualified for the winners of one hunter chase at Tramore,” said O’Sullivan.

Pure bliss for Murphys as Goodoldtimes lands double UNRELATED Wexford duo Luke and Denis Murphy were on the money again when following up their victory at Moira 24 hours earlier. Their first success came with Pure Bliss in the Tattersalls Ireland four-year-old mares’ maiden. The daughter of Mount Nelson took over at the head of affairs after the last and battled gamely to deny Annieguire by threequarters of a length in a thrilling finish, forcing the fellow Wexford combination of Jordan Gainford and Donnchadh Doyle to settle for the runner-up spot. The winner, a half-sister to four-time winner Secret Edge, trained by Alan King, was subject to good reports before racing and went off the market leader. Denis Murphy’s representative Tom Cloke said: “This mare had given us plenty of encouragement at home, so we really fancied her. She was good and tough at the end too and will go to one of the upcoming sales now.” The second of two successes on the card for the Murphys came in the Lord Harrington five-year-old geldings’ maiden with Goodoldtimes. The son of Gold Well has enjoyed two good runs, finishing second at both Lingstown and Oldtown earlier in the spring, and this was a well deserved success. The €32,000 sales graduate still has to be considered a fortunate winner as he found himself a couple of lengths adrift of the favourite Shannon Tide, who fell at the last, leaving Cremant to claim the runner-up position under Jordan Gainford for Colin Bowe. The winning rider said: “This

is a good, consistent horse. He’s b e e n u n l u c k y to go d ow n narrowly on his other two runs. He’s tough and was staying on and I felt he might have got to the other horse that fell in front.” Firak came out on top in the Goffs Punchestown Sale fouryear-old geldings’ maiden for Donnchadh Doyle and Jimmy O’Rourke, as the French-bred son of Fuisse, battled gamely to deny Monty Guiry. The pair were left to battle out the finish after Castle Robin departed on the road crossing between the final two fences. This was the winning gelding’s second start of the season having finished in second place on his debut at Ballyarthur in March under Rob James. Purchased by Ryan Mahon for €20,000 at the Arqana Sale in 2017, the gelding is a half-brother to the ten-time winner Virak, who was trained by Paul Nicholls until April 2018 and is now set to be offered for sale. The 14-year-old had not been seen since winning a hunter chase at Listowel in June and proved to be one of the most popular winners of the day. Bolger said: “We’re thrilled with that; it all went to plan. He’ll be entered in the Joseph O’Reilly Hunters Chase and also in the Champion Hunter Chase at Punchestown. Taking up the initiative with two to jump, the six-year-old was in control from that point as he provided Stephen Connor with his first success after a leg injury which had kept him on the sidelines for much of the season. The winning trainer, who is from Johnstown, Kilkenny, said: “He did it really well, thankfully. He’s improving all the time. You’d be very pleased with the way he travelled and he put in a superb round of jumping.” The Dunraven Arms, Adare & mount Coote Stud five-and-sixyear-old mares’ maiden went to Huckleberry Hill, providing local trainer Lenny Flynn with his f ir st success as a handler. Partnered by Dean Sinnott, the daughter of Shantou battled back gamely to head The Distant Lady to win by half-a-length. An experienced campaigner, t h e m a r e s ’ o w n e r , To n y M c Na m a r a f r o m M u n g r et , Limerick was on hand to greet his winner. Flynn, who is based near Crecora, said: “This is a nice mare who has been coming along with each run. The bit of nicer ground was a big help to her today and I’ll chat with Tony [McNamara] about future plans for her next week.”

Coconut makes a splash with impressive victory Eoghain Ward assesses winning performances at the weekend meetings

CastletownGeoghegan Sunday April 7

Coconut Splash (92+) began to catch the eye as he picked off rivals along the back straight to come from off the pace in a strongly run contest. Producing a smart turn of foot, he won easily, and is a horse with plenty of speed who will likely benefit for a drop back in trip. Fully Charged (87+) has

prog ressed wit h eac h r un, culminating in this fine staying performance in another strongly run contest, dominated by three pacesetters. Star Wizard (83++) returned unchallenged in a race which fell apart, as only one rival remained running with a mile to race. With this fourth success, he has been a credit to connections and can remain competitive on his preferred good ground. My Newbrook Rose (74+) was left in front when the strong travelling pacesetter Katoune Tara exited at the second-last, robbing the race of much of its depth. Some Are Lucky (105+) had briefly appeared to be in trouble

from the third-last, but that proved to be short lived as he won convincingly. He can continue to mop up similar races when the best in t he division can be avoided. Another Island (83+) flew home to spring a big surprise and has very few miles on the clock for a ten-year-old.

Dromahane

Sunday April 7

A Different World (91+) showed a likeable attitude as he got the better of an extended battle from the last in a race in which the front pair pulled clear of their rivals. Doyen Dancer (87+) came t h r o u g h to l e a d a f t e r t h e pacesetting Remedy Z (86+)

made a mistake at the last, and clung on in a bunched finish. Velkera (74+) was one of the first of the principals to come under pressure around the home bend. However, she stuck to her task well to make a winning debut against more experienced rivals. It Came To Pass (107+) landed what proved to be a comfortable success as he looks likely to become one of the top open horses. E x i t E l e v e n (84+) has progressed with each run this campaign having changed yards during the off-season, and there is no reason why he cannot continue to improve with a step up in grade. Rob Royal (85++)

d o m i n a te d i n t h e m a n n e r expected of a shor t-pr iced favourite and can go on to better things.

Rathcannon Sunday April 7

Pure Bliss (80+) showed a fine attitude after being headed after the last, battling back to win in a bunched finished with little separating the first four home. Firak (90+) was left in front when Castle Robin exited in dramatic fashion over the road crossing in a race in which only two horses completed. The wellrelated French-bred backed up his second at Ballyarthur. Shannon Tide (91x) is a well-bred son of Mahler who looked booked for an impressive

debut success, only to crash out at t he last, handing Goodoldtimes (89+) a fortunate win. Huckleberry Hill (72+) took a big step forward to get of f t he mark at t he 11t h attempt, but she may need to continue improving. On The Fringe (102+) clearly ret ains plenty of enthusiasm for the game as he landed his 15th career success in fine style. He can continue to provide his connections with plenty of sport. Panthers Creek (82+) won snugly and now looks to be back to the promise he showed at Curraghmore 12 months ago.

ENTRIES have a reference number to the horse’s last run, form figures (latest on right), owner, handler and exclusive rating (same scale as rules RPR). For penalised horses we suggest deducting half a point per pound (penalties not confirmed until race-day). Irish point-to-point entries are ordered as follows: 1 Horses whose owner has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) owner, (b) horse. 2 Horses whose handler has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) handler, (b) horse. 3 Remaining horses, ordered alphabetically. Abbreviations: B-brought down; b-baulked; C-carried out; d-disqualified; F-fell; P-pulled up; R-ran out; r-refused; S-slipped up; U-unseated rider.

Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point

We can be extremely proud of what Gigginstown has done for Irish racing

A

JOHN GROSSICK (RACINGPOST.COM/PHOTOS)

INTREE was the focus of attention for the Irish pointto-point world last week and things could hardly have gone much better, even though it was a Flat-bred former juvenile hurdler Tiger Roll who captured the headlines for Gordon Elliott and Gigginstown in the Grand National. Anyone involved in point-topointing will be delighted for Eddie and Michael O’Leary, who have been great supporters of the game since the David Wachman-trained Tuco got them going. Funnily enough it was Davy Russell who won a maiden at Tallow on him and a couple of months later Mark Grant rode him to win the Goffs Land Rover Bumper, beating a field which included Beef Or Salmon. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then and we can be extremely proud of what Gigginstown has done for Irish racing. Davy has a unique place in the history of our sport and is a brilliant ambassador for Irish jump-racing. Elliott rode more than 150 winners in points too and had a major impact as a handler before Gigginstown changed their way of doing things. Congratulations to the whole team.

Memorable meeting for Irish pointers

A host of recent maiden winners and other promising youngsters changed hands for good money at last week’s Goffs UK sale and there was no shortage of former Irish pointers on the track. The Grade 1 Mildmay Novices’ Chase was a highlight. It was won by Lostintranslation, who got his early education from the late Willie Codd. He excelled in beating the RSA Chase winner Topofthegame, winner of a maiden at Belclare three seasons ago for Donnchadh Doyle. Another excellent result was the Grade 2 mares’ bumper, won by the former Colin Bowetrained The Glancing Queen, who beat Minella Melody and Daylight Katie, a maiden winner for Aidan Fitzgerald.

From left: Gigginstown owners Michael and Eddie O’Leary celebrate with Davy Russell and trainer Gordon Elliott after Tiger Roll wins back-to-back Grand Nationals

Colin and Donnchadh had terrific results in the sales ring. Colin’s Papa Tango Charly, who made a huge impression when winning a maiden at Liscarroll, set a record by topping the sale at £440,000. His Ballynoe winner It Sure Is made £150,000 and he also achieved two more six-figures sales. One of Donnchadh’s two Portrush maiden winners, Grandads Cottage, fetched £200,000, and there was a fantastic outcome for Josh Ryan, who sold debut Ballyarthur winner Adrimel for £280,000. There was big interest from buyers from both England and Ireland, and healthy trading at every level. A solid middle

market is something you always want to see and is more important in the long run than the headline prices.

Top Wood dashes Irish hopes at Aintree

I was delighted with the spin Burning Ambition gave me in the Foxhunters’. Pierce Power produced him in terrific shape and he took to the fences really well. As we suspected, the flat track and the 2m5f trip helped to bring out the best in him. When we got level with Top Wood at the Elbow I guess it looked as though we were going to win, but the other horse had a huge amount of experience and rallied well.

He has put in good runs at the last two Cheltenham festivals, especially last year when he lost out narrowly to Pacha Du Polder, and was a deserving winner for Tabitha Woods and all his connections. I’m hopeful Burning Ambition could come back and go one better next year. He’s only eight and all the other horses in the first five were 12-year-olds. We were well clear of the rest, but Road To Riches ran a good race to take third for David Christie and David Maxwell, and Coastal Tiep was a respectable fourth at 50-1 for Stuart and Ben Crawford. All in all, it was a better race for us Irish than the

Cheltenham event in which the home team took the first four places.

Gypsy Island impressive at Fairyhouse

I ended a busy week on a high by riding Gypsy Island for JP McManus and Peter Fahey in the Listed bumper at Fairyhouse. She won by a big margin from the Willie Mullinstrained pair Yukon Lil and Colreevy and really impressed me. I’ve been aware of Colreevy since she first ran in a mares’ maiden at Lemonfield two seasons ago. That’s a race which worked out amazingly well thanks to the winner Posh

Trish, who has won six races for Paul Nicholls, runner-up Getaway Katie Mai, the Grade 2 Aintree bumper winner for John Queally last year, and third-placed Ellie Mac, now a good novice chaser for Henry de Bromhead. Perhaps Colreevy needed the run on her first outing since winning at last year’s Punchestown festival, but Yukon Lil is a talented mare too and to beat them both so convincingly makes Gypsy Island a lovely prospect. She’s had a run over hurdles, so she’s not eligible for the Grade 1 bumper at Punchestown. She would have not been out of place in it.
