Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point

Bowe’s first winner for Gigginstown should be a taste of things to come

S

ATURDAY’S Kirkistown fixture saw a result that is almost certainly a taste of things to come, a first success for the combination of Colin Bowe and Gigginstown. The new association between the champion trainer and the O’Leary team came about in a reshuffle announced last summer after the retirement of Eddie Hales. With Gordon Elliott no longer training pointers for Gigginstown, Colin and northern-based Brian Hamilton are now involved along with Mouse Morris and Pat Doyle. Point-to-points have played an important part for Gigginstown since the early days. Tuco, the David Wachman-trained gelding who could be said to have started it all for Michael O’Leary by winning the Goffs Land Rover Bumper at Fairyhouse in 2001, had run previously won at Tallow. The owner’s first Grade 1 winner, War Of Attrition, was first seen in public at Horse And Jockey, though he fell that day. Hell’s Canyon made an impressive debut for the powerful combination, quickening up well under Barry O’Neill to win by ten lengths from his main market rival, the Warren Ewing-trained Favori De Champdou. It was a perfect start to the weekend for Barry. He completed a double for Colin on the mare Fort Worth Texas later in the day, and also rode two winners on Sunday’s Stonehall card at Cragmore. Gold Des Bois, trained by Peter Fahey and ridden by Jamie Codd, put in a nice performance to win the fiveyear-old maiden at Kirkistown, making up for his fall when holding every chance at the last on his initial outing at Templenacarriga. It looked a strong maiden, and the Stuart Crawford-trained runner-up Lowtown Charlie will be hard to beat next time. Jamie didn’t have to exert himself in riding Kruzhlinin to a sixth points win of the season in the open. Runner-up Winged Leader had looked progressive in winning three in a row, including at Ballinaboola the previous weekend, but she was

no match for the Camilla Sharples-owned gelding. Brian Lawless rode Lough Derg Lyric to a maiden for his father Ger. He looks like a very capable rider, great value for his 5lb claim. The Lawless family are from County Wicklow, and it’s not surprising Brian is showing promise, since his father is an expert in a highly skilled and specific area of horsemanship. At his Ballydonagh Stables he has provided training for stuntriders involved in action scenes in films and television programmes such as Vikings. It just goes to show the wide range of talent connected to the point-to-point scene.

Well-related mare stars at Cragmore

The victory of Cool Dove for the Bowe-O’Neill combination in the mares’ maiden was the highlight of the day at Cragmore. A daughter of Flemensfirth out of Lonesome Dove, a bumper and hurdles winner for Charlie Swan, she has plenty of physical scope and looks a nice prospect for the track, as well as of being long-range interest for breeding. Her dam, by Milan, is a halfsister to the Irish Grand National winner Thunder And Roses, also to Shirley Casper, a high-class mare for Dessie

Hughes, and to the 2016 Kerry National winner Wrath Of Titans. The four-year-old maiden was won in good style by Wide Receiver, trained in County Wexford by Cormac Farrell and well handled by Simon Kavanagh. The Sholokhov gelding was a €25,000 Derby sale purchase, and should attract plenty of interest when he goes back to the sales. In-form trainers Declan Queally and Robert Tyner were also on the scoresheet, as was Andy Slattery whose weekend started with a 6f maiden win for Cityman at Dundalk on Friday night.

Dwan has day to remember at Oldtown

Pat Doyle has his four-year-old team in good order. He followed up his Belharbour win with Fado Des Brosses when Slip Road, a €95,000 Land Rover sale purchase won the opening race at Oldtown from Bold Assassin, another second in the age-group for Warren Ewing after Saturday’s effort at Kirkistown. Slip Road was a first winner in a four-year-old maiden for Evan Dwan, who completed a great day by winning on the previous Sunday’s Belharbour winner Perpignan for Eddie Power in the winner of two.

Sunday’s Tallow fixture featured a couple of popular local rider-trainer successes: Johnny Hurley for the venue’s landowner Jimmy Mangan on Monty’s Mission, John Barry for Richard Cotter on Dubai Quest, and James Hannon on Hiupinthesky Dr Joe O’Keeffe. Dr O’Keeffe, owner, breeder and trainer of the six-year-old, was the medical doctor on duty on the day, Richard is a wellknown dairy farmer in the area, and Jimmy needs no introduction. It is great to see people closely involved in the community enjoying success at their local meeting – its big part of the attraction of the sport.

NEWS AND VIEWS

Eoghain Ward

Ideal winter ground leads to big-field maiden heat THE long-awaited arrival of soft ground this season was well received by trainers at Tallow on Sunday, when one of the biggest fields in more than a decade lined up for a February four-year-old maiden. No fewer than 12 runners faced the start for the day’s opener, with trainers making the most of the opportunity to run their young horses on genuine winter ground, as the day’s only four-year-old maiden over three miles, fared much better than the two similar age races on the day over the shorter 2m4f trip. In the nine years of point-topoint racing this decade, only once has a bigger field of horses been declared for a four-year-old maiden in February, that coming when Howlongisafoot beat 12 rivals, including the subsequent Grade 1 winner Shanehill, to win at Bennetsbridge in 2013 for Sean Doyle. Coincidentally, it was Doyle’s brother Donnchadh who won Sunday’s maiden at Tallow. Before that, it was the opening race on the Kildare Foxhounds card at Punchestown 10 years ago that had fielded the biggest line-up of four-year-old runners in the month of February, with a total of 12 horses in 2010. The prolonged dry winter has prevented many trainers from working their horses on grass, but with the ground beginning to ease, and early four-year-old hunter certificate numbers on a par with last year when heavy ground prevented many from running their young horses during the opening month of the new four-year-old season, the wide representation of trainers who ran four-year-olds indicates their keenness to take advantage of a suitable opportunity.

Strong demand for fillies’ maiden

No fewer than four fillies featured in the above Tallow four-year-old maiden, which follows on from the two who took on geldings at Ballinaboola a week earlier, and it is clear there is now the demand for a four-year-old maiden race, specifically for fillies, to be held during February. To date, trainers with a mare

must wait until March before they can race against their own sex, with Ballycahane on March 3, the first opportunity that is being afforded to them this year. Otherwise, they are forced to take on geldings, which Colin Bowe, Eddie Power, Eoghan O’Grady, David Fenton, Jimmy Mangan and Garrett Ahern have all elected to do this month. The early interest shown by trainers to run four-year-old mares is backed up in the hunter certificate numbers, which have j u mp e d by 4 0 p e r c e n t i n comparison with the corresponding point a year ago.

Equine flu hits track schooling

The equine influenza outbreak which shut down British racing had implications for all last weekend’s point-to-point fixtures, when it was announced on the eve of Saturday’s Kirkistown meeting t hat trainers were required to lodge passports for examination by t he IHRB veterinary team when attempting to declare a horse. Three of the weekend’s fixtures, Kirkistown, Crag more and Oldtown, were all due to stage schooling after racing, however, after advice on the flu outbreak, all three either cancelled or postponed their post-racing schooling sessions. Both Cragmore and Oldtown were able to reschedule schooling for Monday morning, which proved a relief for the many trainers desperate to get their horses to work on grass. While the Ward Union hunt was one of the two hunts able to salvage their schooling, the two hunt member races due to be run at Oldtown af ter racing on Sunday, had to be cancelled after advice from the Department of Agriculture, IHRB and Irish Equine Centre, which was a great disappointment for those hunt members and their local supporters.

Gigginstown adds Bowe to its quiver

Saturday at Kirkistown, and the Wexford trainer could scarcely have wished for a better start, when Hell’s Canyon returned a wide-margin winner of the fouryear-old maiden. Being a grey gelding, the success shared similarities with the subsequent Grade 1 Irish Champion Hurdle winner Petit Mouchoir, who carried the same colours to win the corresponding race in 2015. Bowe’s French-bred gelding is the third son of Martaline to carry the Gigginstown silks to success in a four-year-old maiden point, as he followed Grade 1 Cheltenham Festival winner Very Wood, and more recently Diol Ker. The reigning six-time champion trainer has taken out a hunter certificate for a further seven four-year-olds belonging to Gigginstown, in what is the first year he has trained horses for Ireland’s champion owner. He is joined by Downpatrickbased Brian Hamilton, who has also received Gigginstown horses for the first time, and he has already hunter certificated four of them to date. Pat Doyle and Mouse Morris continue to train for Gigginstown, and have between them taken out hunter certificates 21 horses.

NORTH DOWN AT KIRKISTOWN SATURDAY

Kruzhlinin wins sixth open in convincing style COLIN BOWE landed a double first for high-flying racehorse owner Michael O’Leary at this meeting. He won with Hell’s Canyon, the first runner he has saddled for O’Leary, chief executive officer of Ryanair and one of Ireland’s leading racehorse owners. Carrying the famous maroon and white silks of O’Leary’s Gigginstown House Stud, Hell’s Canyon was an easy ten-length winner of the opening Dennison Commercials four-year-old maiden under Barry O’Neill. The French-bred, an €85,000 purchase from the Goffs Land Rover sale last June by Navan trainer Noel Meade, had far too much for runner-up and fellow Frenc h-bred Favor i De Champdou. “He’s a lovely relaxed horse and has taken to racing very well,” said Bowe. “The ground suited him and he might even like it a bit softer. He should make a good staying chaser.” The combination of the reigning champion trainer and O’Neill returned to the winner’s enclosure when Fort Worth Texas dominated the Old Manor Mill mares’ winner of two contest to supplement her Dromahane success from December. The only five-year-old in the race, the Leo McArdle-owned daughter of Gold Well bounced

back from her more recent showing at Boulta to account for last-time-out winner Gold Time by eight lengths. “We’re going to go to the track for the summer and we decided to give her some more experience. She likes better ground, so maybe a summer bumper would suit,” said Bowe. Jamie Codd remains t he leading rider in the northern region t his season af ter he matched O’Neill’s double with a brace of his own, beginning with the deserved success of Gold Des Bois in the Albert Bartlett fiveyear-old geldings’ maiden. He had looked set to go very close on his debut at Templencarriga last month only to come down at the final fence, however the Peter Fahey-trained Frenc h-bred gelding made a m e n d s by b e a t i n g St u a r t Crawford’s newcomer Lowtown Charlie by a length-and-a-half. Winning owner Nigel Baring’s colours will be familiar to those regulars on the northern pointing circuit, with the likes of Bach De

Clermont and Lucky Pass having both carried them to success, while a year ago, he had success at the corresponding fixture with Bi Quini Tiep. “Coming here today we were a little worried about the ground, but it was lovely and safe and he did it well. He’ll mostly likely head to the sales, but I would love to hold on to him as I think an awful lot of him,” said Fahey. Kruzhlinin, untouchable in point-to-points so far and on course for the leading horse title this season, completed the Codd double when mastering what had seemed on paper to be his toughest test to date, with a decisive eight-length victory in the James Murphy Contracts open. The Camilla Sharples-owned 12-year-old supplemented his recent wide-margin Tyrella victory with his sixth win of the campaign, leaving him unbeaten between the flags in Ireland, after dismissing last week’s Ballinaboola winner Winged Leader. “There was some tacky ground around the bottom bend, so Jamie (Codd) took his time with him, and once he hit the better ground in the straight he went on and won snugly. He’ll continue pointing and possibly go for a hunter chase later in the spring,” said Simon McGonagle, head lad

for winning handler Gordon Elliot. Sarah Dawson saddled her second winner between the flags this season when Rubiana landed a dramatic Greenville Electrical five and six-year-old mares’ maiden. The luckless Lady Maureen was one of two horses to depart at the fourth-last in the six-runner race, and ultimately it was daughter of Scorpion who returned with two lengths to spare under Declan Lavery over Cream Sparkles. It was t he second mares’ maiden Dawson had won this season and, like her Loughanmore winner from the autumn, Angelic

Moon, this five-year-old was also for an owner-breeder, with Anne Wishart the winning owner on this occasion. “I am delighted for the owners, Anne and Andy Wishart, who also bred her. The plan was to win a point-to-point and she could head to t he track now,” said t he winning trainer, who had been touched off at Dundalk on the previous evening with 25-1 shot Magic Sea. The Lawless family made a worthwhile trip to Kirkistown when Lough Derg Lyric won the John Beers Recover y & C o m m e rci al Repai r s o l de r maiden.

The six-year-old had run eight times under rules for breeder Pat Coffey, but seems more at home between the flags for the father and son team of trainer Gerard and jockey son Brian Lawless, and showed that by denying Colin Bowe a treble with his newcomer Goldazar, who was beaten five lengths. “We were unfortunate to come up against a very nice horse last time. A lot of credit has to go to my daughter Katie, who schools the horse at home. Brian gave him an excellent ride, judging the race from the front, and he will probably go for a winners’ race now,” said the trainer.

STONEHALL AT CRAGMORE SUNDAY

O’Neill riding high after quickfire double BARRY O’NEILL continues to set the pace at the head of the leading riders table after a double which brought his tally for the season to 29, six ahead of nearest challenger Derek O’Connor. Cool Dove got the Wexford rider off the mark when taking the PJ Dore & Co Ltd five-year-old mares’ maiden. The daughter of Flemensfirth is out of a half-sister to Thunder and Roses and was making her debut in the colours of Youghalbased owner Maurice Mariga. The home-bred was given a positive ride before coming home a length-and-a-half in front of Seangoell. Winning trainer Colin Bowe, attempting to retain his trainers’ title, hinted this imposing sort would now be offered for sale. Fellow Wexford trainer Sean Doyle provided O’Neill with his second winner of the afternoon in t he Powers Solicitors, Kilmallock five-year-old geldings’ maiden on Offtheshoulder. The son of Gold Well is owned by the Monbeg Partnership and was one of three horses on the afternoon to get off the mark on debut. T h e € 3 0 , 0 0 0 D e r by s a l e graduate was never too far away from the lead and went on to overcome the attentions of the well-supported favourite Oscar Robertson by a length. “This is a gorgeous big horse. He was ready in the autumn but the ground was just too quick. He’ll head to the sales now,” said the Doyle. Cormac Farrell looks to have a smart prospect in the shape of Wide Receiver, who showed impressive speed to take the Tattersalls Ireland four-year-old maiden. Ridden by Simon Cavanagh,

the result never looked in doubt for this son of Sholokhov, who beat the Colin Bowe-trained Premiumaccess by eight lengths. The debutant was bought in June for €25,000 at the Derby Sale and was running in the colours of owner Edgar Allen. The Wexford trainer indicated the gelding would now be sold and said: “We were disappointed there were only five runners as we think this fella is the real deal. I think he is going to be a very high-class horse. I’m delighted for Edgar who’s been a lucky owner with us.” Derek O’Connor has fond memories of Cragmore, having previously partnered his 1,000th pointing winner at the course, and the Galway native didn’t leave empty handed as Detatched won the concluding Stonehall Harriers Hunt & Kerry Agri six-year-old and upwards geldings’ maiden. The son of Beneficial was favourite on this occasion after finishing third on his debut at Aghabullogue. The seven-year-old overcame a slow jump at the final fence to beat t he previously placed Verticalpebble by two lengths. “He had a setback last year and was off for a while. He was ready to run at the end of the season but we didn’t risk him on quick ground. He’ll go for a winners’ race,” said trainer Robert Tyner. The Fitsignage Shanagolden winner of two saw Declan Queally

saddle his 16th winner of the season as Givemylovetorose came home 15 lengths clear of the field. Having finished second the previous weekend at Ballyvodock, the six-year-old turned out again quickly to bring her tally to three for the season.

Given a positive ride by Queally, the daughter of Westerner eased clear inside the final half-mile. The successful Eileen O’Mahony-owned mare is now likely to contest a winners of three, before being aimed at in the Gain Mares Final at Ballynoe. Roger Quinlan is having a fine

season and Dont Say A Thing provided the Tipperary rider with his ninth winner in the High Design Askeaton six-year-old and upwards mares’ maiden. Trained by the rider’s main employer Andrew Slattery, the daughter of Doyen was landing her maiden at the second time of

asking, having come to grief when still in contention at Bellindenisk in the autumn, and showed a game attitude in the closing stages of the race. “She’s a very well-bred mare and Roger (Quinlan) liked her a lot today. She will go for a winners’ race now,” said Slattery.

REPORTS

WARD UNION AT OLDTOWN SUNDAY

Memorable day for Dwan as Perpignan provides first double EVAN DWAN had a memorable day after riding his first double, thereby doubling his season’s tally to four. The Tipperary rider got off the mark in the opening Goffs fouryear-old maiden on the Pat Doyletrained Slip Road. The son of Shantou passed the post a head in front of Bold Assassin after a protracted battle from the penultimate fence. The Mary Doyle-owned gelding cost €95,000 at last summer’s Land Rover sale having been consigned by Galberstown Stud. Shannie Doyle, daughter of the winning trainer, indicated the grey gelding would likely be aimed at a four-year-old bumper, with a race at Limerick having been identified. Perpignan (right) turned out quickly after victor y at Bellharbour seven days earlier, to land the Devenish Nutrition winner of two, bringing up the double for Dwan. Having been given a patient ride, the seven-year-old stayed on gamely for an easy 12-length success over Getaman. The son of Robin Des Champs has now won three from four runs between the flags and his ownertrainer Eddie Power said: “He

won easily last week and came out of the race very well. He went out in the field the next morning bucking and squealing, so I said I may run him again. He is a good horse with plenty of ability and I might try a hunter chase with him now.” After two seconds, Jamie Codd got off the mark for the afternoon on Mytermsoryours in the concluding Considine Family six-year-old geldings’ maiden, a race which saw several horses still in contention jumping t he penultimate obstacle owing to the slow early gallop. The Denis Murphy-trained winner had made much of the running under Codd and found plenty on the run-in to see off the strong challenge of the previously placed Bronco Bill. Getting off the mark at the fourth attempt, the six-year-old had run some games races in defeat as a four-year-old and

Murphy’s representative Tom Cloke said: “He will be kept in the yard and we are going to have a horse for winners’ races. “He was just late coming back in last year and the ground had turned before we could run him as he ideally needs a bit of soft ground.” Patrick Turley got off the mark for the season when saddling Tareeshar to take the Underwriting Exchange five-yearold geldings’ maiden. as The son of Morozov wa ne winning for owner Paddy Madin after finishing a fine second on he his debut at Kirkistown in th autumn. The bay came out on top undeer ne Declan Lavery in what was on of the closest finishes of the dayy, as the front trio flashed passed t h e p o s t t o ge t h e r, w i t h Goodoldtimes a head away in second and a further neck bacck to Willie Butler. at “At home he is not a horse tha would set the world alight, butt any time you bring him away to the track he is like a completely different horse. We will talk to the owners now and see whetherr he will be sold,” said the trainerr. Veteran rider Gerry Spain is i h having a wonderful time with

Some Are Lucky this season after the pair made it three wins from four starts when taking the Gannons City Recovery open for novice riders. The former Tom George runner won twice in the autumn before he finished a fine third at Boulta last month. The eight-year-old confirmed his game attitude to see off All Hell Let Loose, getting up to win by a length and a half. length-and-a-half.

Trainer Sam Curling was absent, but the winning rider said: “I knew after the last day when he came up against Arctic Skipper that he would come on for the run, as we were after giving him a break. He keeps pulling it out and that was brilliant there. We might look for a hunter chase somewhere along the line.” The Lougher Stables & ITBA five-year-old and upwards mares’ m maiden saw local trainer Dermot M McLoughlin saddle the first two h home, as Lady Breffni was a c comprehensive 14-length winner o over stablemate Trickey Trix. The successful daughter of Y Yeats was making her debut and, a after being given a patient ride b Noel McParlan, the mare eased by c clear in the closing stages for an impressive victory in the colours of Patrick Sheridan. “We thought she was a nice mare but we hadn’t been able to get her on to grass because the winter has been so dry, so we thought she would have been green. “But she did that well and is g going to improve. She might go f a winners’ race and then for p probably a bumper,” said Colm H Hand, representing McLoughlin. HEALY RACING

WEST WATERFORD AT TALLOW SUNDAY

Deploy The Getaway steals the show with impressive 20-length demolition DEPLOY THE GETAWAY’s r unaway 20-lengt h victor y marked him out as probably the leading four-year-old maiden seen so far this spring. In a competitive 12-runner Tinnakill House maiden, Wexford trainer Donnchadh Doyle’s gelding thrashed his rivals. The son of Get away was bounced out in front by James Walsh, gave an exhibition of jumping and, despite blundering at the final fence, had runner-up Our Miss Power 20 lengths back. The pace was so relentless that the rest of runners either fell or were pulled up. “He’s a lovely, good-looking horse and he has a great cruising speed. He’ll go to the sales now.” said Doyle of t he €25,000 purchase at the 2018 Derby sale. Richard Black, who started off last weekend’s Punchestown Listed novice hurdle winning mare Sinoria in points last season, struck with Casey Jem in the Goffs UK Aintree Sale five-yearold geldings’ maiden. Casey Jem, who was lying third when falling at the last on his career debut in the Ballindenisk maiden won by Rookie Trainer in December, was another to benefit from front-running tactics and the triumphant son of Jeremy was challenged by newcomer Kepagge from two-out.

The latter appeared to be coming off second best, some three-quarters of a length adrift, when falling at the last and the victor ious County Wexford challenger was left clear to dispose of the only other finisher Gold Bandit by a distance. “He improved plenty from his first run and the plan now is that he will go to Downpatrick next month for the hunter chase,” said 14-horse trainer Black, of the James Casey-owned gelding. The Old Road Stud & Gain Feeds five and six-year-old mares’ maiden saw Monty’s Mission, whom the meeting’s landowner J i m my M a n g a n t r a i n s f o r Hanford’s Chemist Limited, effortlessly justified odd-on favouritism under Johnny Hurley. The five-year-old had the best form considering after chasing home subsequent Ballyvodock winner Theflickeringlight on her previous outing at Aghabullogue last month, and disputed the lead until edging into a nar row advantage four-out. It was clear the daughter of Arctic Cosmos had the beating of runner-up Delight Of Dubai from t wo o u t , w i t h 1 0 l e n g t h s separating them at the line. “She was entitled to do that as she had the form. She’ll now go for a mares’ winners of one,” said the trainer, who also bred her.

Star performance

Deploy The Getaway left a big impression and his 20-length victory marks him out as one of the most exciting four-year-olds seen this spring Dairy-farmer Richard Cotter, who trains two horses a mile from the course in Ballynoe, struck with Dubai Quest in The Goulding Family, The John Connery Family, Aglish & BH Tree Services older geldings’ maiden. The son of Dubai Destination, stepped up from his third-placed debut at Kilfeacle a fortnight earlier by mastering long-time leader Cotton Rock to win by a head under Johnny Barry in the closest finish of the afternoon. “It’s great to win at our local meeting and there should be more to come from him as he’s bound to improve,” said Cotter, who also owns and bred the winner. James Hannon initiated the opening leg of a double by steering Harry Kelly’s seasonal debutant Oscar Contender to a resounding all-the-way success in the Rathbarry & Glenview Stud open. The eight-year-old, a Cork hunter chase winner last season, was another to benefit from pacesetting duties and jumped with aplomb at the head of the field.

He produced a good leap at the final fence before holding the closing Arctic Skipper by three quarters of a length. “We were fancying him coming here and James [Hannon] used his stamina very well. We’ve been waiting for soft ground for him and the plan now is that he’ll go for the Tetretema Cup Hunter Chase at Gowran Park next month,” said the Tipperar y trainer of the gelding, who is owned by Mar y Walsh from Carlow. James Hannon completed his double by teaming up with ownertrainer-breeder Dr Joe O’Keeffe from nearby Tallow, who was the doctor on duty at the meeting, to capture this closing race with the mare Hiupinthesky. An ex-track performer, who finished third in a Tramore bumper in December 2017, the six-year-old came from well off the lead and overtook long-time leader Killwinny King before twoout. With the latter falling when beaten in second, the winner was left clear to beat Mrs Mcro by 20 lengths. “She was entitled to do that and she’ll stay pointing, although we might also run her in a mares’ hunter chase,” said O’Keeffe, who also paid particular tribute to winning rider Hannon.

Hell’s Canyon (92++) outclassed his rivals exiting the back straight and simply ga l l o p e d h i s r i v a l s i n to submission. Gold Des Bois (89+) made his move from the second-last, where he got first run on the field, allowing him to account for the eyecatching runner-up Lowtown Charlie (87+), who came from off the pace and overcame a notable blunder at the last to finish a fast-closing second. The pair can win their share of races on the track.

Kruzhlinin (115++) had looked as though he may face his first serious test coming to the final fence, however the manner in which he picked up again in a matter of strides was impressive, a s h e p u t i n a r g u a b ly t h e performance of the season in the open division. He will be hard to beat if capable of maintaining this level for the rest of the season. Fort Worth Texas (84++) bounced back to her best in what was not the strongest of races, and she looks capable of switching to the track. Lough Derg Lyric (86+) made much of the running and won in the style of a horse who can win further races. This was a competitive maiden that will produce plenty of winners.

Cool Dove (77+) is a wellrelated mare who outjumped the closing runner-up at the final two fences, which proved crucial. Of f t heshoulder (88+) dropped two lengths behind the well-backed Oscar Robertson (87+) jumping the second-last, but he showed a likeable attitude to reel him in to win going away. Givemylovetorose (94+) is clearly a tough mare, as a week after running at Ballyvodock, she took on geldings for the first time with a dominant victory. She is closing in on mares’ open class. Don’t Say A Thing (77+) was another to have been aided by her jumping in the closing stages, getting the better of the short-priced favourite. This was a competitive race and she can be expected to follow up. Detatched (83++) appeared to have the race sewn up when

almost throwing away victory at the final fence. He must be value for the winning margin.

Tallow

Sunday February 10

Deploy The Getaway (95+) made all the running and began to stamp his authority on the race from an early point, having looked the likely winner before the home straight. Despite being heavily eased on the run-in, he still clocked a decent time and sets the benchmark in the fouryear-old division at this early stage. He looks very smart. Monty’s Mission (81++) was the clear form selection on w h a t s h e h a d a c h i e ve d a t Ballindenisk and Aghabullogue, and won in the manner expected. She is track material. Casey Jem (91+) was getting the argument with Kepagge (90x) when that rival departed at the final fence. The pair had pulled a long way clear of rest in a race run at a strong pace. Dubai Quest (83+) is clearly a stout stayer as he was doing all

his best work in the closing stages, outbattling a more experienced rival. He can be competitive against fellow winners. Oscar Contender (102+) made full use of getting first run on the favourite and has picked up where he left off in the spring. H i u p i n t h e s k y (75++) made the most of a winnable opportunity when landing a widemargin victory.

Oldtown

Sunday February 10

Slip Road (91+) overcame some far from fluent jumps, and being car r ied wide by t he runner-up after the last, but showed his class to record a battling success. He will improve significantly from this. Ta r e e s h a r (90+) was allowed to set his own pace as he dictated the tempo from an early stage. That ensured the race was run to suit him and he took full advantage, landing a game success over two capable rivals. A successful track career over middle distances likely awaits.

Perpignan (97) is clearly a strong stayer, as having very briefly come under pressure when Getaman (85+) made his move to the front, he quickly overcame t hat challenge and was doing all his best work late on to win going away. He would be an interesting prospect for a maiden hunter chase. Some Are Lucky (99) was another to stay on strongly in a tight f inish. He can continue to win these lesser opens. Lady Breffni (80++) made an impressive debut to win by a wide margin without coming off the bridle. Admittedly, it was not the strongest of races, but she could not have done any more and is a horse for the notebook. Mytermsoryours (84+) has placed form in maidens and was always going to win a race like this, which he did comfortably, despite their being a sprint finish.
