Record-setting McDonogh was a powerful force for women riders
I
’M SURE many of those who attended last Sunday’s Meath & Tara fixture at Tattersalls Farm were thinking of the late Helen McDonogh, whose funeral took place on the same day. She grew up at Cherrymount, near Kells in County Meath. Under her maiden name, Helen Bryce-Smith, she probably rode at just about every point-to-point in the Meath area in the years she was leading woman rider in the country, throughout the 1960s and the first half of the 1970s. She was a very popular and highly respected figure in the racing community of Meath, and far beyond as well. Helen was a record-setter whose career total of 109 point-to-point wins lasted until Liz Lalor broke it last year. And, even more importantly in the long term, she was a driving force among a group of women riders who won a battle with the Turf Club for the right to ride against the men on the track. My late mother, Jean Moore, was one of those women along with the Rooney sisters, Anne Ferris and Rosemary, daughters of Willie Rooney, one of the legendary figures of the sport. All the women riders who came after them owe a debt of gratitude, and that was reflected in many of the tributes paid to Helen last week. Helen came from a family steeped in racing. She and her husband, Des McDonogh, trainer of the great Monksfield, continued the tradition as parents of top Flat jockey Declan McDonogh. Family stories such as this are part of the great strength of Irish racing. We see examples all the time. For instance, Sunday’s Meath & Tara meeting was a big day for Finn Buckley, who had his first Irish pointto-point win on Fameaftertheglory for Gavin Cromwell in an open race for novice riders. The winning rider is a brother of jockeys Tom and Kieren. They are sons of Ned Buckley, who is originally from Clonroche in County Wexford, although his children grew up in England. As a jockey, he rode for Arthur Moore and Terry Casey before going to England where he became an important member of Martin Pipe’s team at the end of his riding career. We had a case of brotherly rivalry
HEALY RACING
Ballygelly and Noel McParlan (left) are pursued by All Loved Up and Joey Dunne at Moira as they continue trainer Ger Quinn’s fine start to the season
at the Tattersalls meeting, with Dara McGill, riding Saint Kristobal to a front-running win for Warren Ewing in the four-year-old geldings’ race, holding off Jim The Wolf, ridden by his brother Oran for the Wilson Dennison/Colin McKeever team.
‘Helen came from a family steeped in racing. She and her husband Des, trainer of the great Monksfield, continued the tradition’
Oran got a winner on the board on Ballywalter in the Dennison colours, while Dara also enjoyed success on Saturday’s card at Moira, riding Springtime Promise in the winnersof-one. The Fame And Glory mare, who began the season with a maiden win at Portrush, is one of about 15 horses in training with Gary McGill, father of the brothers. She has been the stable’s only runner so far. Northern stables enjoyed a successful afternoon at Moira, keeping the southern challengers at bay in all except one of the six races. Pat Turley introduced a nice horse in the four-year-old maiden in Handstands, a halfbrother by Getaway to Kilconny Bridge, a Stowaway mare who won her only point-to-point for Colin Bowe and landed five of her six races
on the track for Anthony Honeyball. He’s also a half-brother to Benny’s Bridge who won a bumper and three races over hurdles for Fergal O’Brien. The dam Wattle Bridge is out of Be My Belle, a Thyestes Chase winner for Sean Treacy. Noel McParlan rode a Moira double on Millford Hill for Caroline McCaldin, and Ballygelly, who kept up a brilliant start to the season for her handler Ger Quinn by landing the mares’ maiden. The Quinn yard has already equalled last season’s tally of six wins, operating a near 50 per cent strike-rate in the first month of the campaign. Ballygelly had finished second to Springtime Promise on her debut at Portrush. Another Portrush runnerup, Wowsham, also went one better, taking the open race under Stephen Connor, beating the David Christietrained Ultimate Optimist. That form looks solid, since Ultimate Optimist made his mark on the hunter-chase scene last season,
winning at Limerick’s Christmas fixture and at the St Patrick’s Day meeting at Down Royal. After recording seconds at Moira, Barry O’Neill was back in the number-one spot twice on Sunday at Tattersalls Farm. Riding Honky Tonky Woman for Colin Bowe, he got the better of a battle with my mount Diva Luna, trained by Aidan Fitzgerald, in the four-year-old mares’ maiden. It was a tough tussle in demanding conditions and we finished a long way clear of the third. Another mare, Farfromnowhere, completed a double for the champion team. The hunt committees involved at Moira and Fairyhouse deserve a lot of credit for providing raceable ground after a spell of awful weather. It’s a sign of how bad things have been that we’ve already lost this Sunday’s fixture at Rathcannnon. Let’s hope action will go ahead as planned at Lisronagh on Saturday and Damma House on Sunday.

IN FOCUS Philip McBurney (below) talks about building his stable and Teeshan’s impressive debut
A
BOUT ten years ago, two of my good friends, Davy Crawford and Paul Ferguson, encouraged me to come along to a point-topoint, and I was bitten by the bug straight away. Paul’s dad Ian Ferguson was training at the time, and we started having a few horses with him, but it wasn’t long before I wanted to buy one myself. Luckily, I had a good start because the horse I started off with was Braid Blue. Ian had bought him and broke him for me, before we put him in training with Gordon Elliott, and he went on to win six races. Ever since I was bitten by the racing bug I had the idea in my head I wanted to have my own yard; it was something that I’d dreamed of. When Covid struck in 2020, like a lot of people I had the time to reflect, having been working in my dad’s transport business for 33 years, and I
‘Once I was bitten by the racing bug I dreamed of having my own yard’ said to myself it was now or never. We took the plunge and started off upgrading the stables on the old farm here at Caherty, which is near Ballymena. Originally, we started off with 18 stables and then began putting in the facilities piece-by-piece. We now have two walkers, a lunge pen, and the gallops. The first is a four-and-a-halffurlong gallop with a twofurlong circle and a twofurlong chute off it, which has a gradual incline on it. We have added a two-and-ahalf-furlong carpet gallop alongside and now have 50 stables. Back in 2018 I went to the foal sales and bought six horses with the plan to sell

them as stores, but then Covid hit, and we kept the horses to race and try to sell them that route. We had our first runner from the yard in September 2020 and it has come a long way in the space of three years. Ger Quinn came to work for us two years ago, originally to ride out, but then he was put in the position to train the horses and we haven’t looked back. Ger and I get on well and we have a very good working relationship. He has a great attention to detail, which I think is a big asset, but he is
also very dedicated to the yard and is always thinking. It’s been a great start to the season for us, with Ballygelly our latest winner at Moira on Saturday, and that came quickly after the win of Teeshan at Loughanmore the week before, which was something special. He’s a horse we spotted at the Land Rover sale in Goffs. Ger and I must have looked at him two or three times at the sales. He had a really good walk, he just seemed to float along the ground, and he had a good

Gain Mares Series is ‘extremely important’ The 2023/24 edition of the Gain Mares Series begins at Lisronagh on Saturday and will build to the traditional finale at Ballynoe in the spring. The most recognisable series in point-to-pointing has been
run for more than 40 years, putting an emphasis on the sport’s mares’ maiden division. Gain Equine Nutrition and the Ballynoe point-to-point c o m m i t t e e w i l l p rov i d e a €3,000 bonus for the winner of the final on Sunday, April 7. At the recent launch of the 2023/24 series in Wexford, Ferns handler Mick Goff spoke of the importance of the series. “This series is extremely important for the mares in particular,” Goff said. “Historically, the mares didn’t have a great platform in point-topointing and since the Gain Mares Series, it has definitely brought on the quality of the mares that are staying in the industry. “It is a privilege to win the series final, or even to be in it. In the point-to-point game, any incentive like this is a massive boost.”
Britain follows winning Irish pointing model Point-to-pointing on this side of the Irish Sea has long had a commercial element to it, with a particular focus on
younger-age maiden races which produce so many of the 1,549 races under rules won last season by former Irish pointers. It is a model the British au t h o r i t i e s hav e s h ow n a greater interest in lately, with a growing number of maiden races being programmed specifically for four- and fiveyear-olds. Horse & Hound recently published an article detailing an initiative being introduced to improve the standard of horses running in Britain, and to encourage young horses to begin their careers point-topointing in Britain. A bonus of £100,000 is being offered to any horse bought from either Goffs UK or Tattersalls between March 2024 and February 2025, which then runs in a point-to-point during the 2024/25 season under the care of a British-based trainer and goes on to win one of four selected races at the Chelt e n h a m Fe s t i v a l i n 2 0 2 6 , including the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and Champion Bumper.
It was great to have them all there in the winner’s enclosure to enjoy the moment, and I always think that it’s important to have our staff in the photo afterwards because they put in all the hours of work through wet and cold mornings to make those good days happen. I had lots of calls after the race. People were telling me that they had never seen the likes of what he did at Loughanmore before. We were all on a real high afterwards. He has been sold privately pending the completion of vetting and we just hope he goes on and delivers for his next set of connections, because that’s what it’s all about. Rathcannon’s Sunday meeting is first point card to fall to weather THE wet weather has claimed its first fixture of the season – this Sunday’s Limerick Bruff fixture at Rathcannon. Heavy rainfall has left the track with unsuitably testing ground and, in light of the unfavourable weather forecast for the coming days, the decision was made to cancel. The committee hopes the IHRB can find a replacement date for the fixture. There was better fortune for the Meath & Tara committee last Sunday when their fixture a t Ta t t e r s a l l s w a s a b l e t o proceed after a 7.30am inspection on the morning of the meeting. Unsurprisingly, heavy ground conditions meant just 24 of the day’s 43 runners completed their races.
stamp. There was just something about him really. When we are at the sales, any horses that we like we get Ian to run his eye over because he’s a big part of it and has a great eye for a horse. Teeshan was in training last season, and he had always impressed Ger, but we don’t like to rush the young horses, so we said we would leave him off for the summer, and it paid off as he’s been very straightforward. What he was able to do at Loughanmore was very impressive. My wife Helen, our kids and some of our friends were at Loughanmore to enjoy the day. All along, we have had great support from family and friends, they all like to come along to the races.

WEEKEND REPORTS
COUNTY DOWN AT MOIRA SATURDAY
‘She jumped brilliantly’ – Springtime Promise victory delights McGill father-and-son team SPRINGTIME PROMISE indicated she is on a clear upward trajectory by destroying the opposition under handler Gary McGill’s son Dara in the Albert Bartlett winners-of-one. After winning a four-runner Portrush race on her return to point duty two weeks earlier, Springtime Promise led from the fourth fence and jumped assuredly throughout. The six-year-old daughter of Fame And Glory was challenged by the favourite, Portrush runner-up Ballybentragh, from the fourth-last, but was always travelling more strongly than her rival and drew clear from two out to win by nine lengths. The previous Sunday’s Ballycrystal winner Commander Of Ten was a further one and a half lengths adrift in third. “They were going too slowly for her at Portrush,” Magherabased handler McGill said of Springtime Promise, owned by his elder son Oran.

Wowsham took a fine step forward from his recent Portrush effort to beat a high-quality field on only his second start in the open division
“I was delighted when it was raining last night and she jumped brilliantly out of the g ro u n d . S h e h a n d l e s s o f t ground really well and is a lovely mare to have.” Portrush form also came to the fore in the Randox Health o p e n a s R o s s C r a w f o r d ’s Wo w s h a m , w h o f i n i s h e d second on his initial points start behind Jay Bee Why at the Route Harriers fixture, won as he pleased under Stephen Connor. The eight-year-old eased to the front travelling best on the incline after three out and asserted after the penultimate fence to beat the only other finisher, Ultimate Optimist, a
dual hunter chase winner last season, by 15 lengths. “He ran really well at Portrush and we’ll make a plan for him in the next few weeks,” Aghory-based Crawford said of the 2021 Perth maiden hurdle winner, who is owned by his neighbour David Laverty. The Paddy Turley-trained newcomer Handstands got the day off to a perfect start for punters by justifying favouritism in the Dennison Commercials four-year-old maiden. The Getaway-sired €17,500 Goffs Land Rover sale acquisition, who is a maternal grandson of Sean Treacy’s Thyestes Chase winning mare Be My Belle, picked up the running before two out and quickened clear for Declan Lavery approaching the last. Despite running green in the closing stages, the winner still b e a t Hu r l e r s h i l l b y t h re e lengths, with the pair eight and a half lengths clear of thirdplaced Trojan Du Berlais.
“He’s a very good horse and I couldn’t see him getting beat coming here,” Turley said. Down rider Noel McParlan is always a jockey to be feared and he partnered two winners, the Caroline McCaldin-trained Millford Hill giving him his initial success in the Dennison JCB five-year-old geldings’ maiden. McParlan doubled up on the in-form Gerald Quinn’s Ballygelly in the Tattersalls NH fiveyear-old-and-upwards mares’ maiden. The towering winner, owned by Philip McBurney, went one
better than her second to Springtime Promise at Portrush with a pillar-to-post success to beat All Loved Up by six and a half lengths. Ten runners, the biggest field of the day, lined up for the Barclay Communications sixyear-old-and-upwards geldings’ maiden, which came with a bonus of €800 to the

‘We think he’s a little bit special’ – has Ewing found another Constitution Hill?
WARREN EWING, who started superstar hurdler Constitution Hill in point-to-points, thinks h e c o u l d h av e u n e a r t h e d another top prospect. After Saint Kristobal landed the Tattersalls NH four-yearold geldings’ maiden from Jim The Wolf, Ewing said: “We told everyone about him; we think he’s a little bit special.” The Dara McGill-ridden, French-bred gelding made much of the running before beating the strong-travelling grey Jim The Wolf by two and a half lengths. “Dara said he was very green in front. Every time they came to him he was locking on. He is very babyish but there’s a big engine and he’ll go to the sales.” T h e re i g n i n g c h a m p i o n u n d e r- 2 1 r i d e r m a y h av e beaten his brother Oran in that race but the elder of the McGill siblings fared better in the Dore & Co Solicitors unplaced maiden. The emphatic 15-length success of the James Lambetrained Ballywalter gave the recently turned 24-year-old rider his opening success of the season, proving the Tyrone handler right to give the son of Presenting time to mature. “This horse always promised a lot, but I ran him a couple of times and he was disappointing,” Lambe said. “I said to his owner, Wilson Dennison, that we’ll just give him a little time, and today he vindicated

what he’d been showing me at home.” A trip to the sales is also likely next for Honky Tonk Highway after she came out on top in a protracted battle with Diva Luna in the Boardsmill Stud & Sherr y Fitzgerald Country Homes four-year-old mares’ maiden. Colin Bowe’s Milan mare was three lengths too good to make a winning debut under Barry O’Neill, who was impressed by the debut victory. “It takes a good bit for a fouryear-old filly to do that first time out here, as that ground is tough,” O’Neill said. “She’s a smart filly and she was pretty green when she got to the front, but she did it comfortably enough.” Bowe and O’Neill doubled their tally when another newcomer Farfromnowhere recorded the most emphatic v i c t o r y o n t h e c a rd w h e n crossing the line 45 lengths clear of her rivals in the fourrunner Hannon Travel fiveyear-old-and-upwards mares’ maiden.
The field was swiftly reduced to three when Some Joy fell at the third, and the race was effectively over as a contest when the Shirocco-sired mare went clear inside the final half a mile, from where her advantage grew larger with each stride. “It was a muddling old race and she was green, but I think she is actually a very decent mare,” O’Neill said. “I would love to have ridden her in a good race because she can be very good.” Devon native Finn Buckley gained a first success on Irish soil when the younger brother of professional jockey Kieren
steered Fameaftertheglory to win the Bective Stud open for novice riders. The seven-year-old picked off the front-running Focus Point at the third-last and had too much in reserve for talented track horses, Screaming Colours and Ramillies, to win by 13 lengths for the in-form Gavin Cromwell team. “I came over from England in April and I work for Gavin five days a week,” Buckley said. “That was my first point-topoint ride here, but it was brilliant.” A change of scener y has clearly made the world of

difference to Wise Move. After showing little in seven previous outings, he proved to be a transformed individual in taking the Coral Gold Cup Sale by Goffs five-year-old geldings’ maiden on his first start for John O’Donovan. Joanna Walton’s mount beat deadheaters I Maske d Du Potier and Born Braver, by four lengths.
