Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point

Marronstown makes a smart start for Bright and Crawfords

L

AST weekend’s point-topoint action kicked off with two meetings on Saturday, at Kildorrery in the south, and at Farmacaffley in the north. The Tynan & Armagh’s Farmacaffley venue is one of the oldest in the country with a history going back to the end of the 19th century. Near the end of the 20th century it was the place where subsequent Grand National winner Bindaree made his first appearance. Northern trainers took five of the six races on the card. Several wellknown figures on the local scene are associated with Marronstown who made a good impression in taking the five-year-old maiden. The Frozen Fire gelding, trained by Stuart Crawford and ridden by his brother Ben, is owned by Jonjo Bright who has been inspirational in the way he has maintained his involvement in the sport since suffering life-changing injuries in a fall at Tyrella nine years ago. Marronstown was bought as a yearling for €4,000 by Ian Ferguson, a great judge of young stock. He has been associated with many important purchases for the likes of Wilson Dennison, Ronnie Bartlett, and Phillip McBurney, who are among the strongest supporters of point-to-point racing in Northern Ireland. Ian provided me with a Cheltenham Foxhunter success on Zemsky and was back in the numberone spot at last year’s festival as the temporary trainer of National Hunt Chase winner Galvin. He bought the Gordon Elliott-trained Cheltenham Gold Cup contender at the Derby Sale in 2018. It’s off to the sales now for Marronstown and he should do well for Jonjo. The horse he beat was An Mhi who got a mention in last week’s column on account of the fact that he was favourite when finishing fourth in the Tattersalls Farm maiden run in the first week of November which had such a big influence in the sales ring thanks to the winner Present Soldier and the placed horses Arctic Bresil and Master Chewy. On Saturday An Mhi was a strong odds-on favourite but he could not master Marronstown from the last after the pair had drawn clear.

emphatic winner in Between Waters, a Sean Doyle-trained Walk In the Park filly who made almost all under Jamie Scallan. Her dam Clear Riposte won the Grade 2 Denny Juvenile Hurdle for Willie Mullins and finished second in the Grade 1 Prix Alain du Breil at Auteuil. Warren Ewing saddled the winner of the four-year-old geldings maiden Better Days Ahead, a nice boost for his rider Dara McGill who has only recently returned from injury. The Milan gelding is a brother to three winners, including the Jonjo O’Neill-trained

Milan Bound who was sold after winning a Fairyhouse bumper for owner/breeder Tom Nagle. Barry O’Neill rode winners for David Christie and Colin Bowe at Farmacaffley on Saturday and made it three for the weekend on the Bowe-trained newcomer Haveanothergoflo in the first division of the five-year-old maiden. He won readily in a race in which the fences took a toll. It was the same story in the second division and there was hard luck for connections of the Finny Maguireridden Joe Dadancer who travelled strongly through the race and looked set for a convincing win when falling at the last. The Califet gelding, owned by Finny’s mother Sabrina and trained by Nicky Stokes, looks a good prospect and should have no

I was at Kildorrery on Saturday but unfortunately couldn’t manage a winner at a fixture I always enjoy. The local Duhallow committee provides great hospitality for the participants and always put on a good show. This year was no exception. Fittingly, it was local rider Chris O’Donovan who took the honours, starting with a front-running success on the short-priced Lord Schnitzel for Declan Queally in the open. A nine-year-old son of Getaway, Lord Schnitzel has proved a really smart recruit to the Waterford yard this season, notching four wins and two seconds from his six starts in points as well as winning the maiden hunters’ chase at Limerick’s Christmas meeting with plenty to spare. He ran against some very good horses including Faugheen in his novice chasing days and has done enough now to justify a trip to Cheltenham. There is also the option of Aintree. Chris, riding Clounts Glory for Mick Winters, dead-heated with Maura McElliggott’s mount Rose Of Corbally in the winners-of-three before teaming up with Artic Breeze, owned and trained by his father John, to land the finale. It was a good weekend for several other riders too. Novice rider Adam Feeney had a double at Bandon, as did Pa King on a pair of Sam Curingtrained winners. Jack Hendrick was the star of the show at Tinahely, riding the first treble of his career, kicking off with the Cormac Doyletrained Idalko Bihoue in the fouryear-old maiden. All in all, it was a busy couple of days and it’s great to see the whole point-to-point scene getting back to normality after all the difficulties and upset caused by the pandemic. Many of the maiden winners I’ve mentioned should be popular at the sales in the weeks ahead, and there’s a lot to look forward to on the racing front now that spring is in the air.

TALENT SPOTTER David Murphy recounts the big moments in his developing career

M

ATATA was my first fouryear-old maiden winner at Tallow last month, which was a big achievement, but training is not a route I had always planned to go down. My father Jeff rode as a professional for a long time and rode about 150 winners in the 1970s and 80s. He retired before I came along but my brother Brian was riding as a conditional when I was growing up so racing was always around me from an early age. When I was old enough I was going into yards with my father, but I didn’t do much riding until I was 14 or 15. Brian moved to America and I followed him there when I was 17. I was riding out in New Jersey and he put me in touch with a farrier who I helped out. I did a course in farriery and went working with Paul Tracey in Florida on the Winter Festival for showjumpers. I did nearly four years in America, which made it a bit of a shock to the system when I came back but I always wanted to settle down here and I was keeping an eye on the racing back home all the time. I rode in a few point-topoints on our own horses when I came back but I was always struggling with the weight. I thought I was going to be a jockey but I hadn’t realised I couldn’t lose a stone of weight every day I rode for the rest of my life. I’d love to have been a bit lighter to have been able to stick at it a bit longer but I can always say I rode a few winners and at least I can afford to eat my dinner now! With my father I bought a horse called Velkera who won first time out for me in Dromahane and Dan Skelton bought her. The day that we sold her I bought Etoile Du

Matin, who won by 20 lengths at Ballyvodock on his first start for me and then followed up in Bandon. When I sold him I bought Haston Clermont who went on to finish second at Moig South in a four-year-old maiden. I bought those couple of

horses at the start to try to make a few quid, but after those results I said we mustn’t be doing too much wrong. I suppose you could say I’m training by accident. I’m focusing on buying three-year-olds now with the view to selling them on after

they run as four- or five-yearolds. They’re not easy to buy. It’s hard to compete in point-topoints with the money that’s being spent. You have more chance of seeing a graded horse at Dromahane on a Sunday than you do at a

midweek meeting on a racecourse – it’s that strong. You might not be able to get the whole package because that would be out of my budget but you are trying to get a good stamp of a horse who moves well with a bit of a pedigree. I’m renting a yard in Thurles

from Donal Commins who bred Matata and it’s a brilliant facility. There are three gallops here, EasyFix hurdles and fences, paddocks, a walker and a big lunge shed. We’re close to a lot of places too. Michelle Gannon is only over the road, you have Liam Cleary’s schooling facility, which is very handy, and Pat Doyle is very close and he lets me in there which is all great for working horses. I worked for Pat when I was race-riding and I have taken an awful lot of how I train horses from Pat and Jonathan Sweeney - they were two good men to learn from. I have 17 horses here at the moment. That would be close to capacity but there is always room for a good one. Eight or nine of them are to run in point-to-points this season, I have a couple more that are for next year. I’m doing my portfolio to get my trainer’s licence so I’m hoping to get that for the summer. I’d like to expand and get more horses. I’ve been improving the quality all the time and that’s the whole thing with point-to-pointing at the moment, the quality is there so you need it to be able to compete. We did well this year and now I’m hoping to buy a couple more in the summer to start all over again.

Small stables cash in as big players light up sales THE fierce competition to secure the pick of the recent I r i s h p o i nt- t o -p o i nt f o r m horses was evident again at Thursday’s Tattersalls Cheltenham February sale, with Harold Kirk, Gerry Hogan and Eddie O ’L ear y among the agents outbid by Neil Mulholland as he secured Colin Bowe’s Willmount for the sale’s top price of £340,000. The Blue Bresil gelding had been rerouted to Comea after the cancellation of his firstpreference fixture at Oldtown on February 13 and the market

took a strong view of the race at the Tipperary venue. Denis Murphy’s runner-up Shannon Royale also proved a big draw in the sales ring when he was knocked down to Mags O’Toole for £300,000, almost m i r ro r i ng t h e p l e t ho ra o f £300,000 purchases in the s a m e s a l e s r i ng f ro m l a s t November which emerged from one maiden at Tattersalls a week before that sale. The latest big results in the sales ring are almost par for the course for the sport’s powerhouse stables, but one element

of Thursday’s results which will undoubtedly have pleased many were the smaller stables which featured among the eight horses who broke the £100,000 mark, with big results for Patrick Farrell, Gerard Lawless and Marie Harding. Colonel Harry is the only horse Far rell has r un this season and the Shirocco gelding generated £130,000 for his connections after his Ballyvodock maiden win. Wicklow-based Gerard L aw l e s s s e nt o u t h i s f i r s t runner of the season at

Bellharbour at the beginning of February. That was Thegingrin and the daughter of Milan became the top-priced mare at the sale at £115,000. Harding, who is secretary of the Kildorrery point-to-point, produced her Knockanard runner-up The Ballyline Man to sell for £100,000.

Flame Bearer shines a light on Doyle’s talent

Tipperary trainer Pat Doyle bypassed his local fixture at Lisronagh on Sunday for good reason as he saddled Grade 2

winner Flame Bearer in the BetVictor Novice Hurdle at Naas. The Fame And Glory gelding, who Doyle purchased as an unraced three-year-old in 2018, made his sole appearance in a point-to-point for Donnchadh Doyle at Borris House two years ago, when second to Hidden Commander. Switching back to Doyle after that initial effort, his Grade 2 victor y on Sunday was his fourth under rules and was a well-deserved moment in the spotlight for one of the most

successful producers of pointt o -p o i nt h o r s e s c u r re nt l y training. Three Cheltenham Festival v i c to r i es f o r the Sui r v i ew St ab l e s o p erat o r ’s f o r m er charges Appreciate It, Bob Olinger and Colreevy is just a snapshot of his roll of honour which would rival any producer in the sport and includes household names such as Brindisi Breeze, No More Heroes, Death Duty, Bacardys, First Lieutenant, Wishfull Thinking and Shattered Love.

The seven-year-old Moira maiden winner had finished fourth at 50-1 when taking on proven open performers in that hunter chase on St Stephen’s Day, and his belated return to the pointing fields, which was delayed by the cancellation of the fixtures at Oldtown on successive weekends last month, saw him make light work of the drop in grade. Noel McParlan steered the Ballingarry gelding to a halflength defeat of recent Bellharbour winner Everything Now. Barry O’Neill was the only rider to leave the fixture with more than one winner and began a double with On The Sod in the Armagh Construction open. He’s just a super horse. “The Tetratema at Gowran Park could be next on the agenda. The six-year-old, who is partially blind in one eye, had not been seen since falling at the final fence in a competitive five-year-old geldings’ maiden at Cork last April when holding place claims. He more than vindicated that promise when dismissing the challenge of the previously twice-placed Jack Doyen by five lengths. Former under-21 champion Ben Harvey also achieved a double as his victory on Mister Bo in the Fairyhouse bumper later that day followed his success on Cuta Des As in the Donnelly Brothers Dungannon mares’ maiden. Marronstown proved a popular winner of the McKinney Motors five-year-old geldings’ maiden as the son of Frozen Fire was sporting the colours of former rider Jonjo Bright. Guided to a one-and-a-half length victory by Bright’s close friend Ben Crawford, the pair quickened up the hill to beat Gordon Elliott’s Tattersalls fourth An Mhi, giving winning trainer Stuart Crawford an across-the-card double. “He’s a horse we’ve always liked,” Crawford said of his brother Stuart’s five-year-old.

“He’s big – 16.3 hands – and has taken a wee bit of time to come to himself. He was ready to run and I couldn’t have asked for mu c h m o re t ha n t hat. He travelled well and jumped well. It’s just great go get him over the line because the horse deserves to win a race.

The Declan Queally-trained nine-year-old will be entered for the St James’s Place Festival Hunters’ Chase. “The race today was like a piece of work,” Queally’s son Declan said. “Lord Schnitzel has plenty of experience at this stage and he can be a bit lazy in a small-runner field.” The Grade 1-placed chaser atoned for his eclipse by Na Trachtalai Abu at Tallow in his previous race by getting into a lovely rhythm in the lead in the Amber Oil & John McSweeney Livestock Haulier Open. His only anxious moment came when he blundered four out, but he was well in command from then on as he effortlessly maintained the tempo to account for Space Cadet by two lengths. O’Donovan, based just four miles away in Shanballymore, followed up with victory on Clounts Glory in the next race, the Crossmore Tyre Recycling, STR Scrap Metal Dealers & Thornhill Opticians winnersof-three, dead-heating with Rose Of Coolbally. Clounts Glory, trained by Michael Winters, jumped into the lead after the final fence, but Rose Of Coolbally, partnered by Moira McElligott for her husband Willie Murphy, fought back to force a dead-heat on the line. Artic Breeze, having finished an excellent fifth to Captain Broomfield on his previous start on good ground at Dromahane in November, edged into a fractional advantage over Clonmeen from four out, before running out a two-and-a-half length winner. “He’s a horse who just took a bit of time and he kept growing after we bought him,” the winning trainer said. “We have three in training and this fellow will probably be sold now.” Corbetts Cross vindicated the promise of his second to Red Dirt Road at Ballindenisk in Januar y by landing the Hanleys Butchers Mitchelstown five-year-old geldings’ maiden under Maxine O’Sullivan, daughter of the winning trainer Eugene O’Sullivan. Corbetts Cross went second from four out as last season’s Tipperar y runner-up Grey D’Alco led. He picked up the running before the last and asserted on the flat to beat that rival by four lengths.

“He’s a lovely horse who will stay with me and he’ll go for the point-to-point bumper at Cork over Easter,” the trainer said of Corbetts Cross, in whom Ger Stack and Tony Keating from Rockchapel also hold an interest. The James Sheehan-trained newcomer Kym Eyre created a f av o u rab l e i mp re s s i o n by coming home as she pleased in the Gain Equine Nutrition, Tattersalls NH & Vaughan family mares’ maiden, whose 16-runner field was the biggest field of the afternoon. We got him from John Bleahen who highly recommended him,” the Antrim fishmonger said of the horse who also carried his colours. “He’s a gorgeous horse and we came here fancying him today. He’s a supermodel to look at and he’ll go to the Cheltenham sales now.” That was one of two secondplaced finishers on the afternoon for former champion Derek O’Connor as he also had to settle for the runner-up spot in division one of the Kirbys

The Champs Elysees gelding took to the new test well as he found only the Tom Hamiltonridden Come On Paddy Mac three lengths too good at the line. Richie Rath’s charge stepped up from his fifth at Bellharbour three weeks earlier and the Jackdenny Syndicate-owned son of Libertarian could attempt to follow up in winners’ company. Division two of that race saw Richie Kiely open his account for the season when he teamed up with his brother Paul’s Glenavaddra. Now in his 12th season of point action, the Waterford

native kept the recent Tallow runner-up to the fore and the Jet Away gelding showed a likeable attitude, answ er ing e ver y question asked of him to beat the two-time track placed Desert Island by a length and a quarter. Cork rider Finny Maguire has been a more active presence on the point-to-point circuit this season and he was rewarded with a fifth win of the season when the newcomer Lady Stanwix outbattled the more experienced Ballyvodock third Lady Kate to take the Kenilworth House Stud five and sixyear-old mares’ maiden for handler Nicky Stokes. That victory was deserved compensation for Maguire and Stokes as they looked to have had division two of the Hotel Minella five-year-old geldings’ maiden wrapped up with Joe D a d a n c e r, w h e n t h e newcomer, who is bred and owned by Maguire’s mother Sabrina, came down at the final fence while holding a clear advantage. His late departure paved the way for Peter Flood’s Ferns Lock, a son of Sue Smith’s six-time winner Rattlin, to

Division one of that contest saw Colin Bowe complete an across-the- card double in fiveyear-old races as the victory of Haveanothergoflo followed the success at Tinahely of General Officer. The winning son of Court Cave is to be offered at an upcoming sale following his six-length defeat of fellow newcomer Lucky Zebo. Na Trachtalai Abu was the

Killybegs Junior takes Hendrick to first treble

JACK HENDRICK enjoyed the first hat-trick of his burgeoning career when the ex-Arthur Moore-trained Killybegs Junior stepped forward from his Ballyvodock third on his pointing debut to take the INHSC older maiden. Having just his second start for Wexford handler Robert Tector, the Court Cave gelding cut out much of the running alongside the locally trained Legacy Of Dreams, and it was that pair who fought out the finish. Killybegs Junior ultimately prevailed by five lengths and is likely to contest a winners’ race in the coming weeks. The day began well for the 22-year-old rider when his mount Idalko Bihoue was the only one of four runners to complete in the Biddy O ’ D o n n e l l f o u r- y e a r- o l d maiden. Playtogetaway when that rival crashed out at the second-last fence, the same obstacle which also saw the pursuing Genietoile depart, and it resulted in the Balko gelding returning alone. The victory was a first fouryear-old winner of 2022 for handler Cormac Doyle after three placed finishes from his stable’s other runners in the age division earlier in the month. Hendrick was then given the leg up by his second cousin Jamie Codd to ride Earl Of Desmond for Codd’s father

The Mayglass native had p a r t n e re d t h e P re s e n t i n g gelding to a somewhat fortunate maiden victory at Carrigarostig in mid-January, but there was no luck required here as the seven-year-old stayed-on best up the hill to defeat the dual winner Garm Colombe by eight and a half lengths. “That’s my first treble. I’d never ridden a double before today, it’s brilliant,” Hendrick said. “I part own the four-yearold with Cormac Doyle too, so that makes the day a little sweeter. I couldn’t ask for better than the day I’ve had.” It could well have been a four-timer for Hendrick as he still held a narrow advantage jumping the final fence in the Fitzpatrick, Gallagher, McEvoy S o l i c i t o r s f i v e - y e a r- o l d geldings’ maiden on Captains Nephew.

However, after setting a particularly strong tempo, the Mahler newcomer was collared close home by Colin Bowe’s more experienced General Officer. career as a rider, recording 28 victories there, and the Waterford native registered his first as a trainer at the Wicklow venue when Time To Rocco won the John R Fitzpatrick Agricultural Contractor fiveyear-old mares’ maiden. For the second Sunday in succession Brian Lawless was deserving of all the plaudits as an enterprising front-running ride on the daughter of Shirocco enabled them to defeat the improved Getabelle by two lengths. “I always thought a lot of this mare. She was running a great race down in Lingstown in a very good maiden which has pro duce d a couple of winners recently, and she just got tired and took a heavy fall at the second-last,” Motherway said. “I just probably ran her back too soon on horrible ground in Dromahane. She’s shown her true colours today.”

eyecatching winner in Between Waters. The Walk In The Park mare had cost €45,000 at the sponsor’s Derby Sale last June and that looked a shrew d investment as she made almost all the running in the hands of Jamie Scallan to easily brush aside the challenge of Ellen Doyle’s French import Realisation by eight lengths. “This is a high-quality mare. She’d a run in a schooling hu rd l e i n Fa i r y h o u s e t w o

weeks ago and she was just awesome,” Doyle said of the sales-bound bay. “We were expecting a big run today. I couldn’t see her being beaten.”

Legend lives up to name with a vintage display T H E G E R R Y K E L L E H E Rtrained veteran Macs Legend showed that age was no barrier to success as the 14-year-old took 22-year-old rider Adam Feeney to the first double of his career in the Barryroe Co-Op & Chris McCarthy Greenbuild novice riders’ open. Macs Legend, a three-time hunter chase winner who was posting an eighth success in points, got into a lovely rhythm close to the pace and the recent Knockanard runner-up effortlessly coasted clear on the descent to the last to beat Solomn Grundy by ten lengths in the colours of Shane Prenderville. The winning owner’s father John Prenderville rides out Macs Legend ever y day at Kelleher’s Macroom base. “He’s in great order and he’s like a two-year-old at home,” Kelleher said. “We’ll probably run him in another open in three weeks.” Feeney was earlier on the mark on his boss John Murphy’s Kitsilano in the Bandon Motors & Bandon Co-Op adjacent maiden. The five-year-old, having really caught the eye by coming fourth to Colonel Harry on his debut at Ballyvodock on January 30, was restrained in third as Dundaniel and No Pains No Gains vied for supremacy at the head of affairs. The winning son of Fame And Glory, also homebred at o w n e r - t r a i n e r M u r p h y ’s Highfor t Stud and a close relation to Grade 1 hurdle winner Abbyssial, eased to the front before the last to beat Dundaniel by ten lengths. In Murphy’s absence, his son George said: “Kitsilano won fairly easily. He’s one of eight pointers we have and a nice horse who will probably now go for a winners’ race. Adam is a great lad who works hard and it’s nice to see him having winners.” Pa King also left Bandon with two winners supplied by the absent Sam Curling with the pair signing off courtesy of Wasdale Park in a thrilling running of the Kevin O’Leary Group & McLaughlin’s Medical Hall Bandon winners-of-one. Wasdale Park made the best of his way home from two out but seemed in trouble when overtaken by runner-up Meetingofthewaters on the run to the final fence. However, Meetingofthewaters blundered there, losing valuable momentum as the winning French-bred forged back to the front to win by a half-length in

Star performance

Macs Legend belied his advancing years to record a popular victory at the age of 14

the closest finish of the day. “He’s a tough horse who jumps brilliantly and his leap at the last won it for him,” King said of the Orla McKevittowned Wasdale Park, who finished second in a Cork maiden hurdle last July. King was earlier on the mark on Curling’s Ask Lileen in the Glenview.ie mares’ maiden. The Comea third Ask Lileen, a granddaughter of Grade 1-placed hurdler Celtic Native, went to the head of affairs setting out on the final circuit

and she asserted before the last to beat promising newcomer Apple Away by six lengths. Ask Lileen represents Richie D ow n e s, w h o a l s o ow n e d Summerville Boy when the son of Sandmason made a winning debut for Curling in a bumper at Killarney in May 2017. Pallaskenry-based Downes indicated that Ask Lileen, whom he bought as a foal, was now likely to be sold. The Mattie Collins-trained newcomer Global Focus benefited from a vintage waiting ride from Brian Dunleavy to collect the Tattersalls NH fiveyear-old geldings’ maiden. Global Focus, an eye-filling son of Milan who was acquired for €25,000 at the 2020 Goffs Land Rover sale, eased his way to the front before the last to account for fellow debutant Divine Inspiration by three and

a half lengths. There was a further two and a half lengths back to recent Tallow runner-up Breeze Of Wind in third. Collins suggested his wife Bridget’s winner would now be sold. Whiskey For Jack, one of a handful of horses trained by Robert Moloney in nearby Bandon, provided the locals with cause for cheer by coming from behind to land the Springmount Stud & AIB Bank older geldings’ maiden. The patiently ridden Whiskey For Jack, owned and bred by Jack Griffin from Carrigaline, led from two out to beat Love The West by six lengths. Whiskey For Jack was ridden by Michael O’Sullivan, who had returned to action only three days earlier after a collarbone injury sustained at Lingstown in early December.

FredWinter Entries: GaelicWarrior readyfor battle

…..The major talking horse for the race has been Gaelic Warrior for Willie Mullins. Still not seen running on British or Irish shores since his switch to Closutton, Gaelic Warrior is as short as 7/2 in one place amidst glowing reports from connections and after some impressive performances over in Auteuil. He will be saved for the race and have his mark protected, so his price could be considerably shorter on the day and if the Mullins team are correct he could make a mockery of it. Horseracing.net

Harold Kirk/Willie Mullins gave €46,000 for Gaelic Warrior’s full-brother at the 2021 Tattersalls Ireland November NH Foal Sale
