‘Viewers will get a flavour of what point-to-point means in rural Ireland’

ISCARROLL on Sunday provided the highlight of the pointto-point season so far, a fantastic occasion with a great crowd and a brilliant atmosphere. Congratulations to all members of the Duhallow committee who helped to make it a wonderful day. Everyone involved deserves credit, but I don’t think anyone would object to singling out the pointto-point secretary Siobhan Madden for her great work in coordinating all the organisation. For three years in a row Liscarroll has been a highlight. In 2017 the fixture celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Vincent O’Brien at nearby Churchtown. Last year we were honoured by a visit from President Higgins, who enjoyed his day thoroughly and showed a great knowledge and understanding of the point-to-point world. This year was marked by another special event, with the crew of RTE’s Nationwide programme in attendance to record a segment for the popular news slot. The organisers went out of their way to make the day a family occasion for the local community, and I couldn’t speak highly enough of the hospitality that was given to the riders. It was a bonus the cameras were there so that viewers will get a flavour of what point-topointing means to so many people in rural Ireland. And the racing was good too, that’s most important. We saw several promising performances, the highlight from the Colin Bowe-trained Papa Tango Charly in the fouryear-old maiden. I rode Fort Summer for Warren Ewing and he was understandably well fancied after finishing third to the Bowe-trained Giants Table on his debut at Ballycahane. He’s not a bad youngster by any means, and yet we could manage only fifth place, just run out of fourth by a Gigginstown horse trained by Mouse Morris. The winner jumped and travelled well, showing a high

HEALY RACING

cruising speed. He could go straight to a bumper judging on how effectively he dealt with the Donnchadh Doyle-trained Big Bresil, a promising horse in his own right. I rode Forthegreatergood to win the mares’ maiden for Sam Curling. She’s a daughter of Yeats and was having her third start after finishing second at Kilfeacle and Nenagh in her first two races, and I think she’ll continue to progress. I could see her being competitive in a bumper before she goes jumping. The up-and-coming Mikey O’Sullivan kept up the momentum with a win on New Earth for Michael Kennedy in the winners-of-one, and the day ended on a happy note with the victory of Doyen Bay for trainer Eoghan O’Grady in the older geldings maiden. This was a memorable success for his sporting rider Bernard O’Neill, a financial analyst for Gasworks Ireland, who has not ridden much in points since his last success in 2007. After taking a break for quite a few years, he is back with all his enthusiasm intact, and it was fitting to see him rewarded in front of a big attendance at the end of a fabulous day’s racing.

Durrow has something for all shapes and sizes

The two-day fixture at Durrow provided plenty of entertainment for spectators, but this is probably the closest thing we have in the point-topoint world to the “industry days” common on the track. Every type of horse, in terms of age-group and standard, is catered for over the two days, and the range of opportunities helps to ensure support from a wide range of handlers. The standard was varied, but there were several notable efforts. I liked the look of Peter Flood’s Cloudings filly Moore Clouds, who won the mares’ maiden on Saturday. She jumped well, and despite being a bit keen out in front she didn’t seem to get tired in fairly testing conditions in a race in which there were several casualties. The other four-year-old race

Derek O’Connor and Forthegreatergood winning the five-year-old mares’ maiden at Liscarroll for trainer Sam Curling. Report, page 7

on Saturday was an auction event, confined to horses who cost €25,000 or less. It was won in good style by Hometown Boy, a big, strong Curtain Time gelding trained by Cormac Doyle. By my reckoning this was as good a race as any typical maiden, despite the restrictions involved. These races can be extremely competitive, since many handlers with an eligible candidate want to try to take

advantage of the opportunity The five-year-old geldings’ maiden was divided. Jack Hackett, winner of the first division for Ciaran Murphy, is a nice prospect for Ciaran, whose brother Aaron rode the Beat Hollow gelding, and fellow owner Sean Reilly. It’s fair to say he didn’t do himself justice when down the field behind Minella Melody in a point-to-point bumper at Gowran this month.

He’s a brother to Hollowgraphic, who looked really smart when winning a Punchestown bumper for Willie Mullins last season and is closely related to Dawn Shadow, a talented mare for Dot Love. It’s a strong pedigree all round.

Looking forward to Ballynoe on Sunday

This coming Sunday sees the

staging of the GAIN Mares Final at Ballynoe. It’s always one of the best days of the season, and I hope the Cork crowds turn out in force for a second week in a row. There is a €3,000 bonus for the winning owner of the feature race this year, thanks to GAIN Equine Nutrition and the local committee, adding further spice to this series finale which has a long history and is always keenly contested.

NEWS AND VIEWS

Eoghain Ward

O’Neill ends 12-year wait for win with Doyen Bay THERE was a memorable success for Bernard O’Neill on Sunday when he won the concluding race at Liscarroll. The victory on Doyen Bay was the first for the Corkman in almost 12 years. That horse’s trainer Eoghan O’Grady had been responsible for providing him with his last winner at Cregg in October 2007. O’Neill had been absent for eight years before returning in 2017, and it was a deserved success having been forced to settle for second on three of his eight rides this season.

Ballynoe to host GAIN mares’ series final

One of the highlights of this coming weekend’s action will be the final of the GAIN mares’ final at Ballynoe point-to-point on Sunday. The long-running series which continues to support the owners and trainers of mares, began at Damma House in Kilkenny in early November, with 21 races taking place across seven counties all building to this weekend’s series finale. GAIN Equine Nutrition and the Ballynoe point-to-point committee will again present a bonus of €3,000 to the winning owner, with a host of connections out to try to claim that valuable prize, won 12 months ago by the County Derry raider Noel Kelly. His Milan Dancer won the 2018 renewal under former northern champion Noel McParlan. That success highlighted the appeal of the series across the country, and its success is evident in its longevity. Race series such as this GAINsponsored one are far more prevalent in British point-topointing and it would be a welcome development if the Irish authorities were able to get more off the ground to inject new life into some areas of the sport which may not be faring as well as the four-year-old maidens.

Fences repositioned on bumper Durrow weekend

As soon as the final horses trailed

across the line in the last race at Durrow on Saturday afternoon and the crowd began to trickle out of the venue, Michael Corbett and his team began to move each of the five fences out on the track to provide fresh ground for the second day of the two-day Brosna Foxhounds fixture. Aided by five members of his family and some of the organising hunt members, they had the fences repositioned in just over two hours to get the track laid out for the following day’s racing. The Westmeath man, whose family have had a long association wit h t he Sout h Westmeat h Foxh ound s ’ f ixt ure a t The Pigeons, has taken over from Charlie Moore in supplying fences for point-to-point race meetings, and he has been delighted with the feedback his fences have been receiving from riders and hunt committees. W i t h t wo s e t s o f f e n c e s available to committees, he is hoping to build on the work of his predecessor and is already working to provide fences in all corners of the country.

IHRB’s rider-testing regime under way

After the second of two antidoping seminars which took place last Wednesday for jockeys, the IHRB began their new regime of testing riders at point-to-points for banned substances on Sunday. The first of these took place at Durrow on Sunday, with the IHRB Chief Executive Denis Egan in a t t e n d a n c e t o ove r s e e i t s introduction, as a number of riders were tested in a camper van behind the weigh tent.

RTE cameras out in force at Lisronagh

The RTE Nationwide cameras were out in force at Liscarroll on Sunday, with presenter Mary Kennedy sampling all the day’s action, and with a bumper crowd in attendance to reward the hardworking efforts of the organising committee, it was an ideal fixture to highlight all that is good about the sport to a wider audience.

HEALY RACING

Doyen Bay winning under Bernard O’Neill on Sunday

The RTE cameras will be back point-to-pointing this Sunday f ilming at t he Tipperar y Foxhounds fixture in Lisronagh. They are set to spend the day following Liz Lalor as she continues in her quest to become the most successful female pointto-point rider of all time. Fresh from success in the ladies’ open at Durrow on Sunday, Lalor will be in action in the four-mile ladies’ open at the Tipperary venue, which is round three of the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Ladies’ series. After the opening two rounds, it is Lisa O’Neill who leads the way on eight points, three clear of Sheila Aher n, wit h Aine O’Connor and Karen Ferris in third.

Fixture Update

Last Sunday’s postponed Galways Blazers fixture at Loughrea will now take place on Sunday May 19, when it will run alongside two ot hers on t he same afternoon at Ballindenisk and Stradbally. The fixture at Largy, due to take place on the previous afternoon, has been cancelled.

Moore Clouds avoids trouble to score for in-form trainer Flood PETER FLOOD landed the Kepak & Walsh Family four-year-old mares’ maiden with Moore Clouds to continue his blossoming career as a trainer as seven races were held at Durrow on Saturday to mark the first day of the Brosna Hunt’s two-day meeting. Ridden by Anthony Fox, the daughter of Cloudings ran out a two-and-a-half-length winner defeating the Ashleigh Murphytrained Imperial View ridden by Tiernan Roche. Despite a large number of casualties in the race the winner, owned by the DD Partnership, managed to steer clear of trouble by setting a good gallop. The winning trainer said: “She’s a great jumper and has been showing us plenty. We haven’t been running too many lately, they just weren’t all right and she is the first to run since. “But she is as game as you want and has loved it since day one. She will probably be sold now.” The second instalment of the Tattersalls Ireland four-year-old maiden auction race was held on Saturday. The races are confined to

horses purchased last summer for less than €25,000 and it was the €15,500 May store sale graduate, Hometown Boy, who came out on top for Wexford handler Cormac Doyle. The debut winner ran keenly in the early stages but went on to gain a three-length victory over the long-time leader Flying Garry. The winning son of Curtain Time will now head to the sales. “He has always worked well but he was a bit keen at the start of this race and got caught in a bit of traffic, but in the end he did it well,” said Doyle. John Barry landed the second division of the Goffs UK, Aintree Sale five-year-old geldings’ maiden on Brandy Pad for Caroline McCaldin. The son of Watar pulled up on his debut in the autumn at Loughanmore but battled gamely this time for a narrow victory over Tony The Bear ridden by James Walsh. Alan McCaldin, husband of the winning trainer said: “We think a lot of the horse, so we were confident. We knew he was fit. He jumped very well and Johnny (Barry) brought him home for us.

Star performance

Jack Hackett could develop into a fine staying chaser after making all to record a comfortable success “That is John’s first winner for us. We have had a string of seconds in the last couple of weeks, so we knew the yard was in good form and really appreciated the win here.” Division one of that five-yearold geldings’ maiden went to Ciaran Mur phy wit h J a c k Hackett under the winning trainer’s younger brother Aaron. The son of Beat Hollow ran out a comprehensive eight-length winner defeating the Dick Lalortrained Fully Charged, with daughter Liz in the saddle. The winning trainer owns the gelding in partnership with Sean Reilly, who also bred the horse and has enjoyed notable success with his half-sister Dawn Shadow. Winning rider Murphy said: “It took him the last two runs to mature. He is a proper galloper that goes on easy ground and he is a big three-mile chaser. |He is a horse that is for sale.”

Kieran Roche and John McCabe had been forced to settle for the second spot in division two of the five-year-old maiden and they once again filled the position of runner-up in the Connollys Red Mills & ITBA six-year-old mares’ maiden with Sadhbh’s Delight. Success in this race went to Vincent Devereaux with Getawaytonewbay under Shane O’Rourke. The winning daughter of Getaway put up a good performance on her last start at Lingstown against geldings and was not winning out of turn. “I don’t think she would have liked the soft ground here too much but she did it well. We’ll probably try for a winners’ race now and see where we go from there. “I think on good ground she might be good enough for the track but we will go for the winners first,” said Devereux. Sam Curling continued his run of good form when adding the Rathbarry & Glenview Stud & BD Flood, Trim six-year-old geldings’ maiden to his season’s haul with Berkerys Enigma. The son of Flemensf ir t h,

ridden by Derek O’Connor, was left clear at the last when Fiddler Of Dooney fell while disputing the lead, allowing Berkerys Enigma to come home six lengths clear of Duckphil. “He is a nice horse and had a good run the last day. He only came to me this season, but he will improve plenty from that again. He might run in a winners’ race now and then head to the track,” said winning trainer Sam Curling. Success in the Midland Veterinary Tullamore mares’ winner-of-one race went to Gerard Kelleher and Michael O’Sullivan when Maif itz’s Madonna won by a length and a half. Running in the colours of owners Larry Buckley and Jackie Beirne, the mare enjoyed success at Turtulla earlier in March, and she doubled up when getting the better of a prolonged battle with the recent wide-margin Lismore winner Seaside Girl. Mikey Kelleher, brother of the winning trainer said: “The mare ran well and is very tough. She’ll go to Cork for the mares’ hunter chase now over Easter.”

New Earth worth following after demolition job Eoghain Ward assesses winning performances at the weekend meetings

Durrow

Saturday March 23

Moore Clouds (83+) is a strongly travelling individual who made all the running and found plenty when challenged to r un out a comfor table winner. She has plenty of pace to drop back in trip. Hometown Boy (90+) raced keenly in the closing stages and overcame a mistake at the third-last to make a winning debut in an average renewal. J a c k H a c ke t t (89+) galloped his rivals into submission in quite a taking display. The all-the-way leader was challenged at the thirdlast, but picked up resolutely on the climb into the straight to win quite cosily. He is a three-mile chaser for the future. Brandy Pad (87+) proved his toughness as the long-time leader was headed in the home straight and, when seemingly set for second, fought back to get up in the dying strides. He

is clearly a strong stayer. Getawaytonewbay (76+) had already proved herself against geldings recently and so was always entitled to win a race like this. She can be even better in quicker conditions. Berkerys Enigma (84+) was left clear at the last, which simplified his task considerably having been disputing that advantage at the time. Maifitz’s Madonna (85+) put in a faultless display of jumping, allowing her to get the better of less-experienced rivals.

Durrow

Sunday March 24

Howya Hun (77+) is unlike most maiden winners, as she is proven in winners’ company, having recently places, and so should easily step up. Casey Jem (91++) never had to be asked an overly serious question as he won wit h considerably more in hand than the winning margin suggested. Trickey Trix (75+) is a strong stayer and a decisive move around the home bend paid dividends. Fenno’s Storm (111) was given a stiff test by the eyecatching mare Holly Flight (102), but he seemingly has stamina in abundance and raised his game in the closing stages.

Walshestown (83++) is well bred and outclassed his opponents. Kr isquin (82+) seemed booked for second before taking advantage of a mistake from Cosmic Flight (80) at the last.

Liscarroll

Sunday March 24

Papa Tango Charly (93+) produced a striking turn of foot approaching the second-last to quicken impressively off a slow gallop. That speed will allow him to make an impression over shorter trips on the track. Forthegreatergood (78++) gained a deser ved success when winning with a bit in hand. New Earth (95+) destroyed the field with one of the more notable performances in the winner-of-one division this season. He is one to follow closely. Keep Wondering (92+) had notable Oldcastle form and accounted quite comfortably for useful rivals in a good time. He is a strong stayer who seems to hold bright prospects. Winter Getaway (77+) eased her way to t he front approaching the home bend and can easily follow up. Doyen Bay (83+) jumped well on his way to taking an average race.

Runners jump off for the five-year-old mares’ maiden won by Howya Hun

Howya Hun gets off the mark on her sixth attempt TIERNAN ROCHE landed his fifth success of the season when steering Howya Hun to victory in t he opening Kilmur ray s Hardware five-year-old mares’ maiden. Trained in Wexford by Ashleigh Murphy and owned by husband Michael, bay mare was not winning out of turn having previously been placed in fouryear-old maidens and in winners’ company recently. Providing her sire Stowaway with the 13th winner of the season, the consistent mare found plenty for pressure in the home straight to see off the previously placed Racks Cross by a length. Representative Gary Murphy said: “She deserved that as she’s run a few big races this season. She’s a fine straightforward mare and they might go for a winners’ race with her if she isn’t sold.” The prolific Fenno’s Storm brought his career tally to ten for owner Maurice Walsh, when taking the Dunnes Stores ladies’ open in the hands of Liz Lalor. Successful in the Tetratema Hunter Chase earlier in the m o n t h , t h e e i g h t - ye a r- o l d bounced out and made all the running in this five-runner contest, eventually getting the better of the promising Holly

Star performance

Although belatedly winning at the sixth attempt, Howya Hun showed plenty of promise on her previous starts Flight by four lengths. With trainer Declan Queally absent, Declan Queally Snr said: “We will keep him in if the ground stays soft and he might go for the Joseph O’Reilly at Fairyhouse. “He won’t get into the Irish National unfortunately, but we might go somewhere with him Sunday week. It was great to have Liz Lalor; she is phenomenal.” The Midland Veter inar y, Tullamore winner of one saw Richard Black saddle Casey Jem to his second success of the season, having recorded a widemargin maiden success at Tallow in early February. A son of the late sire Jeremy, the five-year-old was given a positive ride by Luke Murphy, forging clear from the penultimate obstacle to comfortably see off t he attentions of eventual runner-up Clutch by two lengths. “We took him to the sales, but when he didn’t sell the owners were happy to have a bit of fun with him. He’s improving and getting stronger all the time. I

might aim him at a hunter chase at Cork over Easter,” said the Wexford trainer of the James Casey-owned gelding. Paul Bannon was seen to good effect when partnering the Pat Mackan-owned Trickey Trix to success in the ITBA older mares’ maiden. The seven-year-old was the c l e a r p i c k o n fo r m i n t h e 15-runner race and was duly sent off 2-1 favourite having finished second on her last two starts at Oldtown and Farmacaffley. Never too far away from the lead, the seven-year-old forged clear from three-out to win by a comfortable four lengths, with Awesome Lady in second. “She was due a twist as she is a tough genuine mare who stays and jumps well. She might go to the track now, although I might see if I can find a winners’ race for her first,” said successful trainer Dermot McLoughlin. T h e C l a i r e B e r r y- ow n e d Wa l s h e s t o w n r a n o u t a comprehensive winner of the Glen Wood, Tullamore five-yearold and upwards adjacent maiden providing Cork jockey Johnny Barry with a winner on both days of the two-day fixture at Durrow. Making his debut for the Aidan Howard stable, the imposing son

of Flemensfirth powered clear in the closing stages to account for r unner-up Sastr uga by f ive lengths. Interestingly, the six-year-old is out of a half-sister to 2015 Irish Grand National winner Thunder And Roses who finished third in the ladies’ open on the same card. With the successful trainer on duty at Naas, representative and former jockey Barry Cash said: “He was good there; he is a grand big horse that took a bit of time. “Johnny gave him a lovely patient ride. We will have a chat with the owner now and see what they want to do.” There was a major upset in the concluding Coolmore NH Division & Tullamore Agri older geldings’ maiden with one of the outsiders of the field, Krisquin, getting the better of the even-money favourite Cosmic Flight. Trained by Shane Nolan, the successful eight-year-old was getting off the mark at the 13th attempt having previously been placed on a couple of occasions. A spare ride for Pa King, the winner was handed the advantage at the final fence when the favourite erred in front, enabling the Moyville Racing Syndicateowned gelding to snatch a length and-a-half success.

Casey Jem and Luke Murphy before scoring at Durrow on Sunday

“That was well overdue,” said Nolan. “He had shown a bit of from early on and then lost his way. I just freshened him up and I am delighted for his owners.

“A lot of people would have given up on him but they wanted to give him another chance. We’ll look for a winners-of-one now in four or five weeks’ time.”

DUHALLOW AT LISCARROLL SUNDAY

Papa makes scintillating debut in front of TV cameras IN FRONT of a Nationwide camera crew fronted by presenter Mary Kennedy, the Colin Bowetrained Papa Tango Charly impressed everyone by posting a scintillating debut. Victory came in the Goffs UK Aintree Sale four-year-old maiden under runaway jockeys’ table leader Barry O’Neill. Always well positioned against nine rivals, he moved through to dispute briefly with long-time leader Fort Summer on the incline from four-out. The winning son of No Risk At All took command on the run to two-out before unleashing devastating acceleration after the flight, then forged clear on the run to the final fence to account for Big Bresil by four lengths. “He’s a nice, slick type who was always pleasing us at home and he will be sold now,” said Bowe of t he Una Connors-owned winner. Topline Burtons, Kanturk fiveyear-old mares’ maiden saw the Sam Curling-trained Forthegreatergood vindicate the promise she displayed by finishing second on her previous two starts at Kilfeacle and Nenagh by coming home as she pleased under Derek O’Connor. The daughter of Yeats was always positioned close to the lead and the result was never in doubt once the winner moved through to challenge long-time leader Rockfield Fame on the run to two-out. The five-year-old then powered clear to dismiss recent Lismore runner-up Finisk Mist by six lengths. “She deserved that. The drying ground helped and her experience also stood to her,” said Curling of the 2017 Fairyhouse August sale graduate, whom he shares with his father-in-law Jim Doyle. Mikey Kennedy’s New Earth supplemented his maiden success at the Killeagh Harries meeting at Boulta in January by winning hard-held under talented claimer Michael O’Sullivan in the Sygma Automation winner of one. The gelding, who fell when lying in second spot at the last on his most recent start in the Bandon winners contest won by Monty’s Mission, led from the

Papa Tango Charly posted an impressive performance when taking the opening four-year-old maiden on his debut for Colin Bowe. The French-bred looks to have a dangerous combination of speed and stamina and could be top class under rules

third fence and the towering son of Getaway got into a lovely rhythm in front. He seemed to be containing the pursuing Aughnacurra King when the market-leader fell two-out, and he then coasted home with 25 lengt hs to spare over Alloverafiver. “I’m delighted wit h t hat performance. The track and the drying ground suited him and he’ll now go for a winners-oftwo,” said trainer Kennedy of New Earth, owned and bred by longstanding point’s supporter Karen O’Driscoll. The FarmFirst Insurance fiveyear-old geldings’ maiden saw the Donnchadh Doyle-trained Keep Wondering atone for slipping up after three-out on his previous start in Ballycahane on March 3 by returning to the coveted number one slot with Rob James. The bay, who was a runner-up on his only outing last season at Oldcastle, made progress from mid-division three-out. After fractional leader Ashtown Lad erred at the second-last, Keep Wondering touched down in front over the fence and swept clear on the run to the final fence to account for last month’s K n o c k a n a r d r u n n e r- u p Barrowlands by eight lengths. “He’s a gorgeous, big horse who was bought as a three-year-old at the Land Rover sale. He’ll now go to the sales,” said trainer Doyle of the Monbeg Syndicate-owned winner. Michael Winters likes nothing more t han winning at t his meeting and the trainer struck with Winter Getaway in the Collins Bros Garage, Liscarroll older mares’ maiden, which attracted 17 runners.

The winner made progress for Chris O’Donovan from the thirdlast and stormed past Lemon Hill on the inner after two-out. The result was never in doubt from there and af ter the promising Lemon Hill unseated at the final fence when destined for the runner-up berth, it was left to West Vintage to secure second spot four lengths back. “She was sick at Christmas time and she’s a laid-back sort that has only come back to herself over the past few weeks. She’s a lovely prospect for the future,” said Winters of Winter Getaway, owned and bred by Edmond Cogan from Doneraile. The Exors of late Dr RJ Sheehy older geldings’ maiden is one that will live long in the memory of Bernard O’Neill as the Mallow native, who works as a financial analyst for Gasworks Ireland, rode his initial winner since the autumn of 2007 by returning to the coveted number one slot here on the Eoghan O’Grady-trained Doyen Bay. A respectable fourth on his retur n to point duty in the Kildorrery adjacent hunts maiden last month, Doyen Bay made virtually all running. His task, however, was greatly simplified when the challenging Witness Protection made a raceending blunder two-out and the winning son of Doyen ultimately beat Kanturk Bard by seven lengths in the colours of Eamonn Tarant, from Banteer. “Bernard rode four seconds for me recently. It’s great to give him a winner at a local meeting and he comes in to ride out with us at weekends,” said Ballycloughbased operator O’Grady.
