Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point
Spread of young talent with big and small a healthy sign N INE maidens were run in the four-year-old division across fixtures at Boulta, Lingstown and Moig South last weekend, maintaining the high standard of recent weeks as we near the end of the road for this cohort of youngsters. It’s a sign of healthy competition that nine individual handlers were involved with the nine winners. This spread of winning trainers is good to see. It’s vital that the production of young horses continues to flourish in stables big and small and in yards in different parts of the country. The top handlers have raised the bar with the four-year-olds, making a big investment in store horses and reaping rewards in the sales ring so they can continue the cycle. The major Wexford-based handlers have been to the fore, but they don’t have things all their own way. That’s how it should be. There’s strength in depth to be found on the scene in Northern Ireland. The traditional heartlands of Cork and Waterford are still very much alive. There are some great operators around in Tipperary and in other counties in the south and in the midlands. A good few of us are doing our best to keep the flag flying west of the Shannon. In Meath, Gordon Elliott is still making his mark in point-topoints. Inevitably, the big teams are going to take the lion’s share of the fouryear-old maidens, but the results during the autumn campaign prove there’s plenty of competition. It’s worth remembering, too, that many horses do well in the sales ring, and on the racecourse later, having been placed in a four-year-old maiden.
Value in placed horses
Some buyers may see value in a horse who has finished second or third in a race won by one of the bigger stables. Rightly or wrongly, they may gamble on the fact that there may be more room for improvement with such horses. From that point of view, these maidens need to show depth in order for the sport to maintain its
HEALY RACING
attention after racing at Newbury on Saturday. Among the mares, I like Sam Curling’s Half Past Tipsy and Donnchadh Doyle’s Geturguccion, winner and second respectively at Quakerstown. They had a good battle and finished 40 lengths clear of the third.
Spirit is still strong
Lingstown scorer Presenting Doy was one of nine maiden winners in the four-year-old division last weekend
hard-won reputation for producing so many top hurdlers and chasers. On Monday, the catalogue for the Goffs Coral Gold Cup Sale, scheduled for Newbury on Saturday, took on its final shape. The entries included four of the weekend winners.
‘In Meath, Gordon Elliott is still making his mark in point-to-points’
Mulinas kept up a good run of form for Jonathan Fogarty and the Gaynestown Stud operation by taking the first division of Saturday’s Boulta contest, and he’ll be joined at Newbury by the winners of both divisions of the mares’ maiden at Lingstown, the Denis Murphy-trained Presenting Doy and Pat Turley’s My Forever Annie, as well as by John Flavin’s Moig South winner First Confession. Not surprisingly, champion handler Colin Bowe consigns a couple of noteworthy winners to
Newbury. Hawthorn Street, a Flemensfirth gelding from the family of Irish Grand National winner Thunder And Roses, impressed in scoring at Tinahely. Country Park, a Walk In The Park gelding out of a half-sister to the versatile Wicklow Brave, won a strong maiden at Quakerstown, scoring by a head from Donnchadh Doyle’s Getaway gelding Maximum Offers, who is also in the sale. The race was run in a quick time and can be rated one of the strongest maidens of the autumn campaign. Andy Slattery’s Turtulla winner Will The Wise and Gordon Elliott’s Tinahely scorer Big Debate are other geldings who should attract
While much of the emphasis during the autumn campaign has been on the younger-horse maidens, there has also been good competition among the older horses. There is a varied programme for open horses these days, including races for women and novice riders, and events confined to mares. On Sunday Lingstown hosted an open over its famous banks course. It was won by the Jack Hendrick-ridden Lough Derg Spirit, a Denis Murphytrained gelding having his first taste of this type of action. Still going strong more than six years after winning a maiden at Athlacca, he won four races on the track during his time with Paul Nicholls. He ran a fine race when best of the Irish challengers in third behind Famous Clermont in last season’s Foxhunters’ Chase at Aintree, and may contest crosscountry races at Cheltenham and Punchestown later this season. Sunday’s ladies’ open at Moig South was won by Ramillies, who gave Susie Doyle her third winner of the season. The eight-year-old winner started off with a point-topoint win for Sophie Lacey in Britain and won three races for Willie Mullins. He often ran in Graded races and looks a useful addition to David Christie’s strong team. Susie controlled the race from the front and Ramillies had no trouble adding to the win gained a week earlier for Alan O’Sullivan in a novice riders’ event at Turtulla. The Boulta open race was confined to mares and produced a good winner in Dul Ar Aghaidh, ridden by James Hannon for Jimmy Kelly. She has been a consistent mare since taking a maiden on the same card last year, and could now head for the maiden hunter chase at Limerick’s Christmas meeting.

IN FOCUS Simon Cavanagh on returning home to start his journey as a handler and the challenges of the foal sales
I
’M GOING to be putting in my application for a handler’s permit this week. After seven years down in Wexford with Denis Murphy, riding for him and the likes of Cormac Farrell, I’ll have to try to compete with them now in the training ranks. I have about eight or nine to run in the spring. There are one or two horses here who have been sent to me by local people and then there are a couple that a few of my friends bought, and I also bought one or two myself. The rest we have are homebreds. I was left a farm near home here in Westmeath nearly six years ago when my uncle Finian passed away. Dad gave me the encouragement to come home. He told me that he was going to step back from his work and he would be able to help me to do what I’d wanted to do. I said to myself I’d better do it now, otherwise I’d never end up doing it. I have a good family behind me helping me at the same time. Dad is always on the farm with me, my brother Richie helps me with the accounts, my mother is always here and a cousin of mine, Fergal, helps out too. I have a few pre-trainers and breakers in too, and we would happily take in more of them if anyone needed it doing. My partner Aisling is a big part of the operation, particularly with the sales horses we have consigned for the first time this year under Drumloose Stables.
‘The market had gone quite fickle but I wasn’t going to let her go for €4,000’ HEALY RACING
and the more schooling you can get into a horse, the better, and the more time they are on the lorry travelling, the better for them too. It relaxes their brain as they have seen so many different places; a four-year-old now would nearly want to be like a handicap chaser.
E Simon Cavanagh rode his first winner of the season on the David O’Brien-trained Roxhill Roise at Dromahane this month
The foal sales this year have been an eye-opener is how I would describe it. We saw that the market had gone quite fickle. If you don’t have the sire, you need to have a quality animal because if you have the sire, you might get away with a few faults. We had a Shirocco filly that I thought was nice. She might have lacked a small bit in size but other than that you couldn’t fault her, and she is from the family of Felix Yonger and Cedarwood Road.
I wasn’t going to let her go for €4,000, so I brought her home, and now I might go to the store sales or I’ll tip away with her myself. We have two horses going to Goffs, a foal by Court Cave who is an absolute cracker. He’s a half-brother to Shecouldbeanything, who is a three-time Listed winner this year for Gordon Elliott. We also have an Old Persian foal and they are two nice horses. Aisling and I moved here in April. The gallop went in only
at the end of April. It’s a fivefurlong sand gallop with a fibre schooling strip at the start of it, but I think I have a fair handle on it now. I won’t really know until that first runner, but it seems to be working well, and the horses seem to be fairly fit and strong from it. Ciaran Murphy comes down
to use it a good bit, and I will probably open it up to other people around who might want to use it too. What I learned from Denis has been a massive influence on me and how I’m approaching the training. The name of the point-to-point game at the minute seems to be schooling,
NEWS AND VIEWS
VEN going back eight years, you would ride in a four-year-old maiden and you would be lobbing along for the first mile, as nobody would want to be making the running. Now it can be a cavalry charge to the first, so your horse has to know how to travel and how to jump. If you don’t jump the first couple of fences, your race could already be over. Denis has taught me that you have to have a horse that is able to travel to a fence and jump at a decent enough pace without running around coming to it. I still plan to keep tipping away riding. I had my first winner of the season at Dromahane on Roxhill Roise for David O’Brien, and last month I won a beginners’ chase at Fairyhouse for Paul Flynn on The Big Chap, so I’m not retiring from the saddle just yet.

Leader McGill shows he’s a class apart on Millie B THE loss of the North Down fixture at Kirkistown has left an extended gap without racing in the northern region for 13 weeks, stretching from Moira on October 28 to Tyrella on January 27. However, the lack of racing in his home region has not prevented Dara McGill from building on his breakthrough u n d e r- 2 1 t i t l e - w i n n i ng campaign last year. The Derry native became the first northern-based rider to be crowned under-21 champion since the title was switched in 1991 from being a novice-rider title for 7lb claimers to one for those aged 20 or under at the start of the season. T h e b a c k i n g o f Wa r r e n
Ewing played a significant role in McGill’s title success, but his talents have been catching the eyes of a wider pool of handlers spread across the country this term. That has already seen him ride nine winners this season, with only Barry O’Neill having ridden more. McGill’s 32 per cent strike-rate leaves him sitting at the top of the under-21 leaderboard again. Last weekend McGill was unlucky not to add to his tally after making the five-hour journey to Boulta to ride the unlucky John Flavin-trained Aclass, who held the lead when jinking and unshipping him after the second-last fence. Compensation followed 24
hours later at Moig South, where Tipperary handler Tom Keating supplied the 20-yearo l d Mc G i l l w i t h a s e c o n d winner of the autumn term in the form of Millie B.
Divisions galore at busy Lingstown
Lingstown played host to the busiest fixture of the season so far as 79 runners ran at the Wexford track. It meant both the four-yearo l d m a r e s’ a n d g e l d i n g s’ maiden races had to be divided, creating an eight-race card. The Killinick committee are in the middle of a busy six-day period as they will stage an additional fixture this Saturday
to fill the date left vacant by the cancellation of Water ford Foxhounds’ fixture at Curraghmore. After what has been a slow start to the autumn term, it looks as though it will finish with a flourish after last weekend saw a division in the four-year-old geldings’ maiden at Boulta.
Newbury sale returns
Newbury’s Coral Gold Cup fixture on Saturday marks the return of a select point-topoint sale, when 21 horses with recent point-to-point form go under the Goffs h a m m e r i n t h e w i n n e r ’s enclosure after racing. Five of the 23 horses
remaining in the line-up for the £250,000 race at Monday’s confirmation stage were graduates of the Irish point-topoint fields, headed by Mahler Mission and Monbeg Genius, both exports of the Doyles’ Monbeg academy, and a strong performance from them should bolster the following sale. Five of the 21 horses set to be offered bring winningmaiden form from last w e e k e n d ’s a c t i o n : F i r s t Confession, Presenting Doy, My Forever Annie, Mulinas and Sawdust. The sale starts a busy end to the autumn term for point-topoint consignors, with the offering at Cheltenham on
December 15 bringing the preChristmas action to a close.
Dreaper gallops day in aid of Graham Lee
Point-to-point handler Tom Dreaper is organising a gallops day which will take place today at his family’s Greenogue gallop in aid of Graham Lee. All money raised will go towards the fund set up to assist the British-based, Galway-born jockey who received serious injuries in a fall at Newcastle last month. Dreaper is a long-time friend of Lee from his time riding as a jockey in Britain, and today’s fundraising gallops will begin at 11.30. The location can be found at Eircode K67 WV96.

WEEKEND REPORTS
WEST WATERFORD AT BOULTA SATURDAY
‘He’s a horse who needed some time’ – Belliano scorches home for O’Brien THE Terence O’Brien ownedand-trained newcomer Belliano landed a bloodless success in the second division of the Tattersalls NH four-yearold geldings’ maiden. The favourite Presenting Max ensured this eight-runner contest was run at a searching pace and John O’Donovan’s charge still held a slender advantage when unseating three out. It was then all to play for until Belliano moved to the front at the second-last of the 14 fences and the son of Black Sam Bellamy stormed clear approaching the final fence to beat fellow debutant St Olan’s Well by six lengths. There was a break of nine lengths to fellow newcomer Additional Time in third. “ H e ’s a h o r s e w h o j u s t needed some time as he was a bit weak in the spring,” O’Brien said of the €25,000 Derby sale graduate, a brother to five track winners and whose dam Miliana was a Group 3 winner at Saint-Cloud. “I’ve always liked him and he’ll now go to one of the sales.”

Dul Ar Aghaidh took a big step forward as her frontrunning performance turned the mares’ open into a one-horse race
Mulinas continued the excellent run of handler Jonathan Fogarty by making a victorious debut in the first division of the same race. The Malinas gelding, a threeq u a r t e r b ro t h e r t o L i s t e d placed bumper performer Malinas Jack, overtook The Long Point approaching the final fence. He then asserted for Barry Stone to beat the stayingon Potters Charm in the increasingly familiar Gaynestown Stud Partnership silks. “This is a nice horse by a good sire in Malinas and we were hoping he would have a squeak,” said Mikey Fogarty, brother of the winning handler. “We had a few horses who have already won this season and they were all bringing each
other along nicely at home.” The Jimmy Kelly-trained Dul Ar Aghaidh s core d at the fixture for the second successive year. Having taken the mares’ maiden 12 months ago, she made a victorious return under James Hannon in the Kenneally Steel mares’ open. Runner-up in last season’s Gain Mares’ Final, Dul Ar Aghaidh set off in front and established a commanding advantage. She was never in the slightest danger inside the final half mile as she returned with 15 lengths to spare over Helen O’Connor’s hurdles winner Little Token. “That was a great perform ance and she could now go for the maiden hunter chase at Limerick over Christmas,” Kelly said. Declan Queally maintained his 100 per cent strike-rate since reverting to riding in points this autumn as he partnered his fifth winner of the season on his father and namesake’s Don’t Matter Now in the closing winners-of-one. KILLINICK AT LINGSTOWN SUNDAY
Cheltenham banks date for Lough Derg Spirit DENIS MURPHY is eyeing a tilt at the cross-country race at C h e l t e n h a m’s D e c e m b e r meeting for Lough Derg Spirit after the 11-year-old made light work of his first start over the Lingstown banks. Jack Hendrick’s mount held off the Castletown-Geoghegan winner The Bosses Oscar in the Neville Hotels open to give Murphy his first success over the Lingstown banks since Theroadtocroker in the same race eight years ago. “He was the class horse,” the Ballyboy stable proprietor said. “Jack felt he was a different horse. He locked on going out the last time and, bar a fall, he said it was all over. It’s a big possibility he’ll go to Cheltenham next month now.”
That success completed a d o u b l e f o r t h e He n d r i c kMurphy combination as they had won the opening split of the Coral Gold Cup Sale by Goffs and Cooney Furlong four-year-old mares’ maiden with Presenting Doy. A faller on her debut at Dromahane a fortnight ago, the Doyen mare atoned for that mishap by beating the more experienced Whatmakes Honey B by two and a half lengths. It was tighter in the second division as My Forever Annie edged ahead of Railway Bell after the pair served up a huge tussle up the long run-in. The Champs Elysees-sired bay took victory by a short head to the delight of rider Declan Laver y and Downpatrick

Northern raiders enjoyed further success when Sawdust rewarded trainer Stuart Crawford’s long journey from Larne with a winning debut in the Fintan Carroll & Sons and
Kilmore Potatoes five-year-old geldings’ maiden. “A couple of lovely ladies own him and I’d say he might be kept for racing,” winning rider Derek O’Connor said. “He was a bit cautious going down to the last and he’s a lot more value than the five lengths winning result.” Gordon Elliott supplemented four track successes at Punchestown and Cork the same day with the impressive debut of Son Of Anarchy in a division of the Tattersalls NH and DR Logistics & Warehousing fouryear-old geldings’ maiden. T h e S o l d i e r O f Fo r t u n e gelding, partnered by seventime champion rider Barry O’Neill, justified the €85,000 Mags O’Toole paid to acquire
the chestnut 17 months ago for the Crocodile Pockets Syndicate with an easy 15-length defeat of fellow newcomer Jazz De Cotte. The victory was a welcome one for O’Neill, who twice hit t h e c ro s sb a r o n t h e ca rd , including with Casey West in the Rathangan Bar and INHSC older maiden. The three-time track-placed seven-year-old found Lonesome Boatman two lengths too good. The French-bre d s on of Jukebox Jury was a deserving winner for the Allen brothers, Darragh and Sean, as he had been disputing the advantage w i t h B e au ’s Ca n d l e w h e n falling at the last at Lisronagh three weeks earlier. Sean Doyle has a Gowran
Park point-to-point bumper in mind for Twoohthree after the Jet Away gelding took a big step forward from his Ballycrystal non-completion a month ago to claim the opening division of the four-year-old geldings’ maiden. Jamie Scallan’s mount rallied gamely in the dying strides to deny Ol Man Dingle by a neck. Fellow Wexford handler Paul Pierce sent out his first winner of the season when Theatre Light improved on her recent second at Dromahane to beat Ciakat by three and a half lengths in the hands of Sean Staples. “She’s a nice filly. We always thought she might want better ground, but she has strengthened up now and handled that well today,” Pierce said.

Sam Curling ’s Lisronagh runner-up Miners Bridge, representing Liam Cleary, who
owns this season’s dual mares’ winner Shiroccosmagicgem, recorded a clearcut success in the Dave Allen Engineering & McDonnell Bros five-year-old and upwards maiden. The task of Derek O’Connor’s mount was simplified when the pursuing pair, Fox Hardaway and Sense The Tension, fell two out.
Debutant Son Of Anarchy wins comfortably under Barry O’Neill
DAVID CHRISTIE wasted little time sending Ramillies back into action a week after the eight-year-old gained his initial success in the open division at Turtulla. And the result was the same as the grey returned to the winner’s enclosure a runaway 1-4 winner of the Cois Sionna Desmond Credit Union ladies’ open. Never far from the pace, Susie Doyle’s mount mastered the testing conditions to lengthen 44 lengths clear of the Cothelstone maiden winner Amenon. “That was brilliant. He travelled and jumped really well and seemed to love the ground,” Doyle said of her third winner of the season. “He was really good and I’m ver y thankful to David for letting me ride him. It’s always a pleasure to ride one of his.” Alan O’Sullivan, who had been on Ramillies a week earlier, gained his first fouryear-old success when guiding Michael Griffin’s Backmersackme home in the Tattersalls NH four-year-old maiden. That was Alan’s first spin for me and he was top class on him.” O’Sullivan was the only rider to complete a double at the Limerick venue when riding his second winner in the space of eight days for Castletownroche handler Marie Harding, Brave Endeavour running out a wide-margin winner of the INHSC & Stonehall Harriers older geldings’ maiden for novice riders. His owner-breeder Jamie O’Brien, from Buttevant, rides out an odd day for me at home, so it’s great for him. We’ll enjoy tonight before making further plans for him.” Nineteen-year-old Kieran Power will cherish fond memories of the fixture as Morrie In D Quarry supplied him with his first success in the saddle in the Brian Collins Bookmaker Askeaton five-yearold geldings’ maiden. Placed over hurdles at Limerick on his penultimate outing when under the care of Ross O’Sullivan, the Mahler gelding wasted little time in making an immediate impression on his switch to the pointing fields by beating Bigbraveboy by half a length to open his account at the first time of asking for his new trainer Declan Queally. “It’s nice for Kieran as he’s a good lad and has been with us
for a couple of years now,” Queally’s son and namesake said. “He’s a grand horse who’ll run in a winners’ race next, and he has the option of going back to the track in time too.” Bigbraveboy’s rider James Hannon enjoyed better fortunes in the Coral Gold Cup Sale by Goffs four-year-old auction maiden, as he teamed up with Tramore handler John Fl av i n t o ga i n h i s s e c o n d success of the weekend courtesy of First Confession. Victorious on Dul Ar Aghaidh at Boulta 24 hours earlier, the Tallow rider always had the €18,000 son of Affinisea in a prominent position, and they were not for stopping at the line to hold off General Briar by a length and a half. Dara McGill’s long journey from Derry was rewarded as he successfully teamed up with Tipperary handler Tom Keating on Millie B, who made all in the Roches Feeds Limerick mares’ maiden. The Workforce-sired fiveyear-old made light work of the testing conditions to beat Danesfort Mayfly by nine and a half lengths.

The three-year-old beat favourite Lark In The Mornin by nine and a half lengths and was instantly cut for the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. RACING POST
His only other runner under NH rules GORE POINT was runner-up in a 3YO Bumper at Ludlow earlier in the month.
