Derek O’Connor Straight to the Point
I’m proud to support coaching scheme to develop young riders
I
’M delighted to be involved with a new jockey coaching programme that has just been launched. At the moment it’s designed as part of what’s called a “continuing professional development” scheme for claiming professional riders, conditionals, and apprentices. The plan is for the scheme to be extended to qualified riders before too long and I’m sure it will be a major benefit to young point-topoint riders in due course. Over the last number of years, since becoming one of the more senior riders on the scene, I’ve been trying to give something back to the sport that has given me so much by helping to bring on young riders. I’ve enjoyed being involved in courses at Race (Racing Academy and Centre of Education), and I’m looking forward to this role that I’ll be sharing with some well-known riders with a lot of diverse experience. There are five of us and we’ll cover the country between us. Top Flat jockey Niall McCullagh, still going strong in the saddle, and former jump jockey Paddy Flood will be in charge of the east and the midlands. Another former jump jockey, Robbie Moran, will handle the southern counties. Nina Carberry will oversee Meath and the north, and I’ve been assigned the west. We’ll be supplying mentoring and specialist instruction. We’ll be working with Barry Geraghty, not only one of the best jump jockeys of all time, but now a qualified life coach who has put a lot of his practical knowledge to good use in helping to design this programme. The most important thing about this project is that it is carefully structured to provide an overall level of support for young riders, who will have to attend five sessions with the coaches over a year. It will be tied in with the roles of professional specialists, covering areas such as diet, strength and conditioning, and sports psychology. If a rider is going to develop to full potential, he or she has to work on all the aspects that make a top sportsperson. Being a naturally gifted rider will get you only so far if you want to make the grade in the professional ranks. You need to be a

serious athlete who knows how to look after the body and the mind. There may not be as much pressure on the amateur rider, but to anyone riding at any competitive level, my advice is to try to give yourself all the advantages you can. You also have to gain the confidence to make the right decisions on the track in the heat of the moment. That chiefly has to come from race-riding experience, but a good jockey coach can prepare a young rider to cope with these challenges. It’s a tough sport. You have to keep yourself in good shape, and you have to keep yourself mentally fit as well. I hope the mentoring that my colleagues and I bring to this project
can be of benefit to career development and help young riders achieve their ambitions.
Dara McGill well placed to retain under-21 title
There’s no shortage of young riders coming on the scene at the moment, although there’s not quite the same strong competition in the under-21 category this season as there was in the 2022-23 campaign when three riders, Dara McGill, Bertie Finn and Brian Dunleavy, all reached double figures. Dara took the honours with 16 winners. With ten wins on the board already this season, he’s well placed to retain his title since he’s five clear
of Alan O’Sullivan, and no other rider has had more than three winners. There’s still plenty of time left for some others to

make up the ground. In general, it’s encouraging to see so many fresh names appearing on the list of winners. Last Sunday’s Dungarvan fixture started with a second win of the season for local lad James Fennell, who rode Mozzies Sister to win the mares’ maiden for the in-form Queally team. Another Dungarvan youngster, Kieran Power, also enjoyed a second winner, partnering Knightsphase for his father Edmund. O’Sullivan was on board the David Kiely-trained maiden winner Fort Henry. On the same card, Toni Quail followed up her previous week’s Ballycrystal win by taking the novice riders’ open on De Nordener for Sam Curling, and Emily Cody, a veterinary student at UCD, got off the mark for the season on Ask The Flick for her mother Debbie. Susie Doyle leads the field among the lady riders this season with five wins. She went very close on her two rides at Cragmore on Sunday. In the winners-of-one she rode I Masked Du Potier and lost out by a head to My Best Valentine, a second winner of the season for Stefan Tobin. The margin was the same in the next race when I just denied her, riding Headcorn. The winner is trained by Michael Phillips, whose daughter Hannah has ridden three winners this season and is Susie’s main challenger at the moment. In the north at Tyrella last Saturday, it was senior riders who took the headlines, with Noel McParlan and Barry O’Neill both recording doubles. Dara McGill couldn’t manage to extend his lead in the under-21 title race but was placed on four of his five rides. He was on the favourite Jay Bee Why in the open, but Warren Ewing’s gelding was unable to cope with the class horse of the race, the Grade 1 winner Battleoverdoyen. Now an 11-year-old, it was good to see Gordon Elliott’s runner putting in such a lively performance seven seasons after making a winning debut in a maiden at Loughanmore in April 2017.

IN FOCUS Toni Quail on the benefits of her background in eventing and learning from top Wexford stables
T
HIS is my second season with Sam Curling (pictured below). I had two winners for him last year, and that is three winners this season thanks to De Nordener at Dungarvan on Sunday. He’s a horse who joined the yard only this season but he’s been in great order and his races aren’t taking much out of him, which is brilliant. It’s been slow to get going this season but, hopefully, we will keep the ball rolling now. My background is actually in eventing. I started off in the pony club, then did a lot of eventing through the pony club, and I also played mounted games. It was through eventing that I got on Ireland’s European junior team and the young h was a rider team, which great experience. I he went to Italy for th juniors and France for the young rider championships. After I finished school I started riding outt in the mornings. I ug just caught the bu for it and said to myself that I wanted to try this. The eventers had a charity race in Dundalk, and I won that. I couldn’t believe it really, so I went and got my licence to ride in races. I am from Downpatrick, so I did a year with Brian Hamilton before I went down to Wexford. When I was going point-to-
NEWS AND VIEWS THE Eclipse Awards are not usually connected to point-topointing on these shores but last week the coveted prize of America’s champion steeplechase horse at the prestigious ceremony went to a graduate of the sport in Ireland. Merry Maker was the name added to the roll of honour for 2023 to cap a highly successful campaign for the seven-yearold in which he gained a breakthrough top-level success in the Grade 1 Lonesome Glory Handicap Hurdle at Belmont in mid-September. It marked the culmination of a journey which started with p o i n t i n g f o r t h e We x f o rd h a n d l e r P i e rc e Po w e r f o r whom he won a four-year-old auction maiden at Tipperary racecourse in April 2021. That came during the second of two Covid-enforced breaks in the action in pointing fields, and, interestingly, he emerged from the same point-to-point meeting at Tipperar y that

I was like, ‘What are they doing differently?’ So I went down to work there, and it was good to get an eye-opener seeing two big Wexford yards. I did a year and a half with James and Ellen Doyle before I went to Colin Bowe. It’s been brilliant to have had the opportunity and I’m veryy grateful g to them. I got to t ride two winn ners on the traack for Colin, which was great. w John Adams J was w the first at Sligo. It was S during the d Covid pandemic, C so there wasn’t much h point-topointing going on, which probably helped. It was brilliant to get, though; some people try to get track winners and never manage it, so to be able to have had two of them, I’m very grateful. I also had my first point-topoint winner during Covid when there was nobody there

– it was very strange, but those winners are very special to me, so I will always remember them. Last year, I was lucky enough to have my own four-
year-old, Patrick’s Well, who won in Stowlin. Jeremy Maxwell is a neighbour of ours at home. He is just at the top of the road, and he bred Patrick’s Well.
He had taken him to the May sale, but he didn’t sell. Jeremy rang him and asked if I wanted to take a look at him. So I went up and he was a handy little horse, and I thought for my
Merry Maker award points to importance of the US market produced none other than superstar hurdler Constitution Hill, who finished second in a division of the four-year-old geldings’ maiden which followed later on the card. Merr y Maker followed fellow pointing graduates Hewick and The Mean Queen, who were crowned American champions as part of the Eclipse Award programme in 2021 and 2022. While Hewick remains in training with Shark Hanlon on these shores, the titles for Merry Maker and The Mean Queen, two horses exported directly to the US, highlight the growing importance of the North American market.
Quinn in seventh heaven on home soil
The Tyrella card marked the long-awaited return of action n circuit after on the northern an exaggerated absence of two months without point-to-pointt action in the region. The loss of Kirkistown’s November fixture, and the ultimatelly foiled attemp t at rearranging it for mid-December, er resulted in an extended break, even longer than the often
frustratingly long gap over Christmas for the region’s participants and supporters. The return of racing in the region was clearly welcomed, with the five-year-old geldings’ maiden becoming the eighth race of the season to be divided. Ger Quinn (pictured) is one person who certainly welcomed racing being back in his home region, as he has been the handler to follow. The victor y of Raceview
Road at Tyrella was his seventh in the region from just 15 runners, giving him an impressive 47 per cent strikerate. That is four more than any other handler has managed at the five fixtures in the region, with the impressive four-yearo l d Te e s h a n a m o n g h i s northern point winners this season. Then owned by Philip McBurney, the Loughanmore victor has since joined Paul Nicholls and could appear for the first time since his 41-length debut success, as he features among the entries for a bumper at Sandown on Saturday.
first young horse to do, he would be a good one to start with. I broke him at home and got him going there and when I came down to Sam’s I asked him if I could bring him down. I’d already done a lot with him at home, including crosscountry, so it was just a case of getting him going over fences and galloping at Sam’s. I rode him the first day; we just tipped him around as we didn’t want to be too hard on him. Then I broke my wrist, so I couldn’t ride him in Stowlin, but Pa King took the ride and was savage, brilliant, on him. It was a different feeling as an owner compared to riding. I was probably more nervous watching on compared to being the rider, but it was lovely the way it worked out. We sold him in Doncaster and he is with Sue Smith now, so hopefully he will go on and do well for them. It’s something I would like to do again, but unfortunately, I didn’t pick anything up in the summer. I did a lot of sales work, and nothing really fell across me like Patrick’s Well had. I still do eventing during the summer too. I think it’s very beneficial for my racing. It really helps me with spotting strides coming into a fence. I would recommend it to anyone to do the groundwork in eventing or showjumping because I think it really stands to you. I have an event mare, Wellan Summertime, who is up to three-star. She actually finished second to the Olympic gold medalist Laura Collett at her last event, so my aim this year is to get her back in and try to go to four-star during the summer when I find the time as it all just keeps going! Eoghain Ward McKeever’s Down day lifted at Doncaster
Colin McKeever may have left Tyrella empty-handed, with Cresthill faring best of his four runners at the Down venue when second in the winnersof-three race. However, action on the same afternoon at Doncaster will have been a great source of pleasure when Jeriko Du Reponet maintained his unbeaten run with a third successive victory over hurdles in the rearranged Grade 2 SBK Supreme Trial Rossington Main Novices’ Hurdle. The Fren ch-b re d s on of Choeur Du Nord has long had a lofty reputation to maintain since his debut four-year-old maiden victory for McKeever at Kirkistown last year, after which he was bought privately by JP McManus. His Doncaster success followed successive wins in less demanding company at Newbury earlier in the season.

WEEKEND REPORTS
EAST DOWN AT TYRELLA SATURDAY
‘The further he went the better he was going’ – Battleoverdoyen’s winning return BATTLEOVERDOYEN was the star attraction as the Grade 1 winner made a winning return to the pointing fields with a three-length victory in the Cosy Roof open. Absent since finishing fifth in t h e To p h a m C h a s e o v e r A i n t re e’s G r a n d Na t i o n a l fences last April, the Gordon Elliott-trained 11-year-old, twice a winner at the top level earlier in his career, ended a losing run which had stretched to July 2021. Despite three open winners this season featuring among his four rivals, Barry O’Neill’s mount proved to be up to the task, continuing the success of Grade 1 winners in the race after back-to-back victories for Brain Power. “Barry is delighted with him. He jumped and travelled and

An eyecatcher before falling two out on home turf at Loughanmore last year on the second of three starts for Colin McKeever, Ballybrittas joined the Dromara stable of Denn ison’s daughter during the offseason and, after finishing fourth at Portrush on his stable debut in October, he proved three-quarters of a length too g o o d f o r C o l i n B o w e ’s newcomer Duffry Trixs. It was the colours of McCaldin’s husband Alan, a former physiotherapist to the Ulster rugby squad, that Slievehill carried to complete her double in the Bluegrass & Dengie older geldings’ maiden. McParlan’s intentions set out from the drop of the flag as he immediately took the sevenyear-old to the front. Their advantage grew further with each furlong and at one point they were a fence clear of their seven rivals, who ultimately never managed to land a challenging blow. At the line, the Kayf Tara gelding had 31 lengths to spare over Forgoodrforbad. That victory completed a double for former northern
champion McParlan as he had earlier combined with Gerald Quinn’s Raceview Road to land the James Armstrong A u c t i o n e e r s & Va l u e r s winners-of-three. “He will probably go into open company now and we might even consider a summer campaign as he likes a bit of nice ground,” Quinn said. Former jockey Chris Timmons enjoyed a particularly profitable season last year with his string on the Flat, and
his burgeoning career added a first winner over jumps when Squiggles, his first runner between the flags, made a winning debut in the Tattersalls NH five-year-old mares’ maiden. Although somewhat slow two out, the winning son of Ocovango, who previously represented JP McManus, was in a different league to his toiling rivals as he powered clear to beat Plan Of Attack by 28 lengths. “I was a bit worried about the ground, but he was great out there,” Quail said of Daniel Boland’s £10,500 purchase at last year’s Goffs UK September sale in Doncaster.
Mozzies Sister lands the five-year-old mares’ maiden by 12 lengths
“He will probably now get a break for a couple of weeks, but his main objective will be the Ladies Cup over the banks at the Punchestown festival.” Nineteen-year-old Kieran Power, from a mile outside Dungar van, partnered a second career winner on his father Edmund Power’s wellrelated newcomer Knightphase in the Tom Morrissey Building Contractor five-yearold geldings’ maiden. Knightphase moved closer on the approach to the secondlast fence and the son of Sageburg, whose dam is a halfsister to Willie Mullins’ six-time Cheltenham Festival-winning racemare Quevega, took command from the last to see off favourite Canunclecani by two lengths.
Owner-trainer Power, who is a l s o t h i s m e e t i n g ’s v i c e chairman, said: “I bought him off his breeder, Denis Hickey, as a three-year-old and he’s a horse who still needs to furnish. He will probably now go to the sales.” Power works with Declan Queally and the Cappaghbased handler continued his terrific campaign by bringing his seasonal tally to 17, two behind championship leader Colin Bowe, after the favourite Mozzies Sister landed the Murrays Family Pharmacy & Gain Equine Nutrition fiveyear-old mares’ maiden. unlikely six-length success. Mark Scallan gained his first victory of the campaign when h i s B r e a k Th e B o u n d a r y repelled the challenge of the well-bred newcomer Jubilant in division two of the five-yearold geldings’ maiden. Having pulled up after a costly mistake on his debut at Tattersalls last season, there was no repeat of that jumping er ror for Tiernan Pow er ’s mount as a one and a halflength victory saw him become
the first son of French Navy, sire of the dual Grade 1 winner Marine Nationale, to win in the pointing fields. Big Girl Betty had finished second in a hunter chase at nearby Downpatrick racecourse when last seen in competitive action in May. Mozzies Sister, representing the For The Love Of It syndicate, will now be prepared for a tilt at the Gain Mares’ Final. Emily Cody, a third year UCD veterinary student, partnered an eighth winner on Ask The Flick, who is owned by her mother Debbie, in the Topline Currans six-year-old-andupwards geldings’ maiden. Ask The Flick, who was never a factor when pulling up on his debut at Ballindenisk three weeks ago, made most of the running and bravely kept Walk Easy at bay in the closing stages to win by a head.
Racegoers were treated to another pulsating finish in the Conor Lannen Country Store & INHSC older mares’ maiden, a race that came with a generous €800 bonus to the winning owner, as the Ray Hurleytrained Lucky Mahler fought back with a renewed effort for Eoin O’Brien to beat Minella Soprano. Lucky Mahler is owned and bred by Bernard O’Mahony from Innishannon in County Cork. Most local interest revolved around the Al Eile Stud adjacent hunts maiden and the David Kiely-trained nine-yearold Fort Henry, representing the Sgeal Shee syndicate, led on the inner before two out under Alan O’Sullivan to deny newcomer Ahanaglogh by a length.

The nine-year-old grey was first past the post in a Grade 3 novice chase at Naas on the corresponding day 12 months ago when under the care of Willie Mullins, only to lose the race in the stewards’ room. There was no need for a stewards’ inquiry a year on, such was his superiority over his three rivals, with Barry O’Neill sitting motionless as the pair crossed the line 64 lengths clear of Cloudy Tuesday. “Coming here before Naas was always the plan,” handler David Christie said. “All he had there today was a gallop around and that should leave him spot on for Naas now. “All I do at home is keep him fresh and happy. The Cheltenham Foxhunters is still his first target at the big spring festivals.” That drama-free feature race was a complete contrast to the i n c i d e n t-p a c k e d o p e n i n g Eleanor Gammell five-year-old mares’ maiden when the loose horse Remma took out three of the remaining nine runners before the fifth-last fence. Boombox Baby benefited from her prominent position to avoid that grief, as the Boulta fourth stepped up from her debut to beat Harmony Heights by f o u r l e n g t h s f o r B r i a n Lawless and Matthew Flynn O’Connor. “This is a nice mare. She was fourth first time out in Boulta in a g o o d m a i d e n ,” F l y n n O’Connor said. “She was a bit green then and wanted the run that day.” Flynn O’Connor had sold his recent Ballycr ystal winner Melbourne Shamrock to Emmet Mullins for £125,000 at the previous evening’s Tattersalls Cheltenham January sale, and he came close to capping off the weekend with a double, when Aboutdamntime came out second best in the Tattersalls NH & Heineken five-yearold geldings’ maiden. M i c k G o f f ’s n e w c o m e r Clondaw General ultimately proved too strong with the €48,000 Goffs Land Rover sale purchase having their measure by three and a half lengths. “This is a really nice horse who we really fancied coming down here today,” Goff said. “He’d shown up really well in a couple of schooling bumpers

G l e n e t t y ’s r i d e r, D e r e k O’Connor, gained compensation when Headcorn lowered the colours of the favourite Tory Hill in the Macro Stainless older geldings’ maiden. The Jet Away gelding had posted a career-best effort at Turtulla a fortnight earlier and he built on that for Michael Phillips to force the Pat Doyletrained favourite to fill the runner-up spot for the third time on the trot.
