Botani looks a great prospect for Mullins after encouraging debut

I

combined a trip to ride in a couple of the early races at Ballinaboola with the big meeting at Leopardstown on Sunday. With the ground riding quick, Joseph O’Brien had no option but to withdraw last year’s winner Edwulf from the Irish Gold Cup, so the only ride I had was on Botani for Willie Mullins, in the Grade 2 bumper. For a mare having her first race in an event of that standard, she did well to finish fourth behind Santa Rossa, a lovely prospect for Dermot McLoughlin and the Conway family, who have had some fine chasers with Jim Dreaper, including Harcon and Notre Pere. I always enjoy being involved in the action on a big occasion like the Dublin Racing Festival, but at the same time it was a pity this one clashed with the Belharbour fixture, always a good day-out in my part of the country. I heard there was a great atmosphere this time, with a lot of excitement generated by the race for female riders run as part of a fundraising effort for Breast Cancer Ireland. Congratulations to Aishling Wixted, from Sixmilebridge, who won the event on Bubbles and to all the riders who raised more than €9,000 for a great cause. There were also many attractions for children and families, and the committee and their supporters deserve a lot of credit for making this a successful community event. The four-year-old maiden campaign has started and there was a familiar look to the Belharbour race won by Pat Doyle with the French-bred Fado Des Brosses. Pat, whose Kaiser Black put in a brilliant effort to finish second to La Bague Au Roi in the 3m Grade 1 novice event at Leopardstown, has used this race to introduce some promising youngsters, including the 2017 winner Dorrells Pierji, a winner of four races on the track for Willie Mullins. Ridden by Johnny Barry, Fado Des Brosses was getting on top when left clear by the fall of the Colin Bowe-trained

Sidetracked, a half-brother to retired chaser Cue Card, was a popular winner of the open at Belharbour when beating stablemate Home Farm for trainer Gearoid O’Loughlin

Goaheadwiththeplan at the last. Sidetracked was a popular winner of the open – his trainer Gearoid O’Loughlin, now based in County Meath and doing a fine job for successful owner Chris Jones, is a native of County Clare. For good measure he also supplied the runner-up Home Farm, with the favourite Burning Ambition only third. A half-brother to Cue Card, Sidetracked won a maiden hunter chase at Clonmel last month. He’s a six-year-old with time on his side and it will be interesting to see which route they take with him. It is quite possible he could have a successful career in handicaps, but if he stays in points and hunter chases he will be a major force. Winning rider James Hannon

completed a double on Serious Mood for local trainer Norman Lee, and Johnny Barry also made it two for the day, partnering Robin Des Champs gelding Perpignan to land the winners of one for Holycrossbased Edward Power. Hardly any fixture these days is complete without a Wexfordtrained winner and this time it was Cormac Doyle who came up with the goods for the Monbeg Partnership, saddling In Too Deep, a five-year-old newcomer by Malinas to win the five-year-old geldings’ maiden.

Ballinaboola winner has a hard act to follow

The form of last year’s fouryear-old maiden at Ballinaboola hardly needs introduction. But for those who have forgotten, it was won by Colin Bowe’s Envoi Allen, who

maintained his unbeaten record for Gordon Elliott and Cheveley Park Stud when winning the Grade 2 bumper at Leopardstown on Saturday. Colin won Sunday’s renewal with me Telmesomethinggirl, a filly by Stowaway. She did it well for Barry O’Neill but the complexion of the race was altered when both Jamie Codds’s mount The Grey Falco and the Harley Dunneridden Alfa Mix fell at the second-last. I wouldn’t take anything away from the winner, but it will be interesting to see if the two fallers redeem themselves quickly – they both showed definite potential. The fences at Ballinaboola are the same ones which caused issues at a Borris House fixture earlier in the season, and it might not be a bad idea to have them checked out, just

in case there is something in the dimensions which needs adjusting. They seem to be catching out an above-average number of horses. Barry also rode Winged Leader to win the winners of three on his first start for David Christie. The five-year-old was trained by Donnchadh Doyle when winning at the same venue in November and has looked an encouraging prospect since winning at Loughbrickland at the start of the autumn campaign – he’s a very useful addition to David’s yard. There was also a good performance from the John Paul Brennan-trained Oscar mare The Three Wizards. She showed a good turn of foot to win by eight lengths on her debut under John O’Neill. Sunday’s other fixture was at

Ballyvodock where Eoin O’Brien made the headlines with a treble. He kicked off by making all to win the mares’ maiden on Paul O’Flynn’s promising newcomer Quarry Lil, completed a double for the trainer on Boulta maiden winner West Cork Wildway, then took the finale for Marie Harding on Bright Rhett. West Cork Wildway, who runs for the 13-member Fernhill Tower Syndicate, looks a likely type for a point-to-point bumper and you can also expect to see Theflickeringlight on the track in due course. The Flemensfirth gelding, bred by Davy Russell’s father Jerry, carrying the colours of his sister Aileen and trained by Colin Motherway, added to his debut win at Aghabullogue with another promising win under Luke Murphy.

James hot on rivals heels after 18th winner TITLE-CHASING jockey Rob James showed another side of his talents at the weekend. The Wexford native, who has ridden more than 170 winners since his first pointing success in 2012 and landed the 18th winner of the season on Cormac Doyle’s In Too Deep, demonstrated he has an eye for selecting young equine talent. In the day’s opener at the Belharbour meeting in County Clare, James was on his own aboard Goaheadwiththeplan, a son of Stowaway who he bought at the Goffs Land Rover sale last summer. The Oliver Loughlin-bred fouryear-old had led the field to the final fence, where he came to g r ief, denying James t he possibility of a monopoly in the day’s four-year-old races with horses whom he had bought at the sales. That was because at the same time on the opposite side of the country, Barry O’Neill had just guided Telmesomethinggirl to a three-length success in the day’s only other four-year-old maiden at Ballinaboola. Like his own Belharbour mount, Telmesomethinggirl is also by the late stallion Stowaway, with the bay filly having been bought by James alongside winning handler Colin Bowe at the Tattersalls Ireland May sale for €39,000. The team at Tattersalls could scarcely have wished for a better start for that inaugural store sale, which was introduced to provide added time for horses to be produced for the spring four-yearold ld season. That Ballinaboola maiden in particular saw four-year-old fillies returning in first and second, and although the race featured several late fallers, their defeat of geldings continues to highlight the growing impact fillies are having in the younger age division.

The improved track programme has added value to those selling fillies who win a point-to-point and that has provided trainers with the necessary confidence to increase their investment in fillies to the undoubted benefit to the wider national hunt breeding sector.

Racing TV to showcase four-year-old stars

Point-to-point will again have an important shop window, when Racing TV begins broadcasting a weekly feature highlighting star performances in the four-year-old maiden division. Supported by Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, the programme, which is expected to be broadcast during ‘Mark Your Card’ on Thursday mornings beginning tomorrow, will also highlight other notable races, including the performances of leading open lightweight horses with one eye on the big hunter chases in the spring, offering a rounded view on point-to-point racing in Ireland.

Popular race raises money for charity

The County Clare hunt once again put on a tremendous show for all who were at their Belharbour point-to-point on Sunday, with the undoubted highlight the Hunt Members Race for female riders. Despite being the final race of the day, it was as big a draw as any of the preceding six races, with a big local crowd turning out to support the 12 riders. The biggest compliment goes to the organisers and participants in the race, who have managed to raise a substantial amount of money for charity. Point-to-point secretary Paul O’Neill reported more than €9,000 was raised from the race for Breast Cancer Ireland and their pioneering research.

The Cormac Doyle-trained In Too Deep puts in a fine leap before landing title-chasing jockey Rob James his 18th winner of the season

Plenty of pointers at Dublin Festival

Almost €500,000 in prize-money was earned by former point-topoint horses at t he second running of the Dublin Racing Festival. The Grade 1 Irish Gold Cup produced a titanic battle between t wo o f t h e s p o r t s l e a d i n g graduates, as Colin McKeever Moira’s four-year-old maiden runner-up Bellshill (below) just got the better of Road To Respect, who won a Monksgrange fouryear-old maiden for Eoin Griffin. Envoi Allen continued to bolster his reputation, with his biggest success coming in the Grade 2 Matheson Bumper, 12 months to the weekend that he four year old maiden for won his four-year-old Colin Bowe at Ballinaboola.

BARRY O’NEILL extended his advantage over Derek O’Connor at the top of the riders’ table from one to three after landing a double. His 24th winner of the season came on Telmesomethinggirl in the opening Arctic Tack Stud four-year-old maiden. One of two mares in t he line-up, the debutant was given a positive ride before taking up the advantage on the run to the penultimate fence. The Milestone Racing Partnership-owned mare was left clear by the departure of her two closest pursuers at this point, but to her credit the daughter of Flemensfirth picked up readily o n t h e r u n - i n to b e a t t h e staying-on Zero To Hero by three lengths. “Barry couldn’t pull her up afterwards so she had plenty left in the tank. We’ll go to the Cheltenham sales now,” said trainer Colin Bowe. O’Neill’s double and 25th winner of the season was brought up by t he hat-trick-scoring Winged Leader. Against only two rivals, O’Neill elected to make much of the running on the five-year-old, with t h e e v e n t u a l r u n n e r- u p , Ballinasilla, joining the leader five-out and still holding every chance turning in. However, the John Hegarty and Jennifer Kane-owned winner

The Three Wizards showed a nimble turn of foot to beat a couple of in-form mares and could be interesting under rules quickly put the race to bed on the run to the last, coming home eight lengths clear. The son of Winged Love was having his first start for trainer David Christie, who said: “We will go for another point-to-point, maybe an open, just to teach him more and if everything is well, we’ll look at the hunter chase at Down Royal on March 17.” John O’Neill enjoyed a winner on his second ride of the season when taking the Gain Equine Nutrition five and six-year-old mares’ maiden on The Three W i z a r d s , w h o p o s te d a n impressive performance on her debut. Carrying the colours of Marie Brennan, she was ridden in middivision before easing clear under a hands and heels ride in the closing stages. Thats The Truth was eight lengths back in second, while Subtle Quest was placed for the fifth time after finishing third. “I hoped she would put in a performance like that and we’ll sell her now,” said trainer John Paul Brennan. T h e Ta t t e r s a l l s I r e l a n d

C h e l t e n h a m f i v e - y e a r- o l d geldings’ maiden saw Rapid Raider post a fine front-running performance under James Kenny. The debutant put in a solid round of jumping and held every chance at the final fence when left clear by the departure of Clondaw Promise. To his credit he showed no signs of stopping on the run to the line, coming home five lengths in front of Enjoy D’Allen. Owned by Gavan Kinch, the five-year-old was bought for €20,000 at the Derby sale in 2017 and trainer Liam Kenny said: “We were hoping to run him as a fouryear-old as we had him ready to go, but then he got a bit of a nick, so we had to take our time. The plan would be to go to t he Cheltenham sales now.” Spanish Leather got off the mark at the seventh attempt in the Nitrofert six-year-old geldings’ maiden, having fallen on three of his previous six starts. Mark Scallan was content to track the leaders for much of the race before taking over on the run to the final fence. The Inish Stables Partnershipowned gelding secured victory with a good jump, coming home six lengths in front of Kilrane Road in second. Winning trainer Brian Jordan said: “ We will tr y him in a winners’ race now because we won’t be able to sell him just on

that and I think he’ll improve again.” Evan Dwan gave the Tony Martin-trained Cle En Main a patient ride to take the concluding Horse & Hound Hotel seven-yearold and upwards’ maiden for novice riders. The seven-year-old was settled in mid-division and despite a

couple of sloppy jumps, caught the eye travelling strongly with a circuit to race. Dwan was content to bide his time along the back straight before sweeping through to lead on the run to the second-last. T h e d e b u t a n t gal l o p e d o n resolutely for a six-length success over Mister Flemington.

The Three Wizards shows magic touch Eoghain Ward assesses winning performances at the weekend meetings

Ballinaboola

Sunday February 3

Te l m e s o m e t h i n g g i rl (82++) is clearly talented but the race did not allow her to show her real potential as two of her key challengers crashed out when the contest was beginning to develop. Rapid Raider (90+) has a very enthusiastic running style. He made all the running and was left in the clear when Clondaw Promise (90x) fell at the last. This race could produce a lot of winners.

The Three Wizards (82+) travelled ominously well into the home straight and went on to win in impressive fashion. She could hold black-type prospects in time. Spanish Leather (85+) had hinted at promise in the past and picked up well after the last to win going away. Winged Leader (96++) was the class act of the field and despite some slight errors on the final circuit, he dominated as expected. He can develop into a leading open or hunter chase horse in time. Cle En Main (86++) was well supported ahead of his debut and won with plenty in hand.

Ballyvodock

Sunday February 3

Silver Sheen (88+) stayed on

best in a competitive race to nar rowly win in t he dying strides, with the field tightly bunched at the line. Quarry Lil (77+) made all and showed a likeable attitude to repel the challenge of far more experienced rivals. West Cork Wildway (97+) only had to be kept to his work as he outclassed a solid benchmark in comfor table fashion. He can make t he transition to the track. Capture The Action (72+) was able to pull clear of the field and she picked up well after a bad mistake at the last, which could have proved costly. Theflickeringlight (90++) supplemented the promise of her Aghabullogue success when comfortably accounting for Givemylovetorose (88+).

Bright Rhett (86++) was the obvious form selection and he recorded a deserved success cosily.

Belharbour

Sunday February 3

Fado Des Brosses (92+) had to be chased exiting the back straight, but the further he went, the better he looked, and he appeared to be getting the measure of Goaheadwiththeplan (91x), who exited at the last. In Too Deep (91+) hit top gear approaching the last and pulled clear in impressive fashion. This was a quick time and a notable debut. Oscar Loca (75+) proved a more competitive force in following two runs over hurdles in the autumn. Sidetrac ked (106+) has

continued to improve with each outing this season and wo n a C l o n m e l m a i d e n hunters chase last time. He could become a leading hunter chaser with another season under his belt. Pe r p i g n a n (92+) is a lightly raced seven-year-old and he was found an ideal opportunity in this winner of one to make his stable debut for Edward Power. Serious Mood (85+) dug deep to beat a capable sort and can follow up in winners company.

UNITED HUNT AT BALLYVODOCK SUNDAY HEALY RACING

Silver Sheen could have bright future on track after victory Connections of Silver Sheen believe he has a bright future on the track in Britain after a gutsy victory on his second appearance. He was bought for only £10,000 at Goffs Doncaster sale in May 2017 and could turn out to be a bargain buy. The Paul Cashman-trained Silver Sheen stepped forward from his sixth-placed debut effort at Aghabullogue three weeks earlier by coming out narrowly on top under Michael O’Sullivan in the Water Rock Golf Course five-year-old geldings’ maiden. The son of Sulamani, who is out of black-type placed mare Silver Gypsy, came into contention after three-out and challenged Global Fame approaching the last, mastering the latter on the flat to win by a neck. Cashman said of his mother Catherine’s winner: “This is a nice horse that just needed the run in Aghabullogue. He’ll go to the sales at Cheltenham later this month and he should become a nice middle distance horse in the UK.” The rest of the afternoon belonged to jockey Eoin O’Brien, who landed a treble. Paul O’Flynn-trained newcomer Quarry Lil provided him with his first winner with an authoritative, front-running win in the O’Connell Group five-yearold and upwards mares’ maiden.

Star performance

Debutant Quarry Lil made all the running before holding on gamely to beat a solid in-form mare and could be a decent prospect under rules The debutant bounced out in front and was mostly foot-perfect with favourite Shallow Run being her closest pursuer throughout. The market-leader had to be rousted along on the run to twoout, but the five-year-old wasn’t for passing. Although blundering at the final fence, she still beat Shallow Run by two lengths. O’Flynn gave O’Br ien his second winner when West Cork Wildway easily justify odds-on favouritism in the Jerry McCarthy Car r igtwohill, Shopping & Business Centre winner of two. The five-year-old took the eye in running and had just moved through to challenge fractional leader Call His Bluff when Niall Hennessy’s charge fell two-out. The winning son of Yeats was always in command and only had to be shaken up to beat recent Clonmel hunter chase runner-up Kiera Royale by three lengths. “We said we would run him here to get more experience and he’ll now go for one of the pointto-point bumpers,” said O’Flynn. The concluding Norman Walsh

and Guilders Bar six-year-old and upwards ge l di n gs ’ m ai de n brought up O’Brien’s treble when Bright Rhett benefited from a supremely confident waiting ride on last month’s Templenacarriga runner-up. Despite slipping in the market, Bright Rhett moved closer on the outer after the third-last and swept through to join issue with the gambled-on runner-up Doran The Legend before the final fence. After the latter blundered, Bright Rhett drew clear on the run-in to oblige by a length. “He was a little short of work at Templenacar r iga. Eoin’s instructions were to mind him here and get him home. Hopefully, we might go to the track with him now,” said trainer Marie Harding. In the The Midleton Park Hotel & Jack Spratts Bar, Carrigtwohill Mares’ winner of two, Colin M ot h e r way ’ s f i ve - ye a r- o l d Theflickeringlight showed she’s improving by giving a faultless exhibition of fencing under Luke Murphy to supplement her easy Aghabullogue debut victory. She took up the running six-out before favourite Givemylovetorose we n t o n w i t h f o u r f e n c e s remaining, but the eventual winner reassumed command after the third-last and the market leader was already emitting

distress signals when erring twoout. Although Givemylovetorose went down fighting, she was still two lengths adrift at the line. Trainer Motherway, saddling his fourth winner of the season, said: “This mare has a heart of gold and is lightening quick over her fences. She has improved since Aghabullogue and if we still have her, she could go for the Gain Mares’ Final in Ballynoe.” Theflickeringlight is owned by Youghal-based Aileen Walsh and was homebred by her father Jerry Russell. The mare C a p t u r e T h e Action provided Shane Baragry with an initial success for trainer Jimmy Mangan by running her rivals ragged from the front in the Brown Island Stables five-year-old and upwards maiden. The six-year-old, a penultimate fence faller when beaten on her previous start at Templenacarriga, was positioned quickly at the head of affairs and established a commanding advantage on the run to four-out. The mare was gone beyond recall after three-out and a finalfence blunder didn’t make the slightest difference as she beat Our Majella by ten lengths. “We’ll take it from here, but she’ll probably be aimed at the Gain Mares’ Final,” said Mangan.

COUNTY CLARE AT BELHARBOUR SUNDAY

Doyle extends impressive maiden record FADO DES BROSSES improved Tipperary trainer Pat Doyle’s great record at Belharbour and looks to have a bright future. Doyle has won the opening four-year-old maiden race before with the likes of Dorrells Pierji, a four-time subsequent winner on the track for Willie Mullins. The trainer’s record at the County Clare course was improved further after Johnny Barry gave the French-bred Fado Des Brosses a patient ride on his racecourse introduction in the Costello Family four-year-old maiden before sweeping into the lead approaching the final fence. His victory was made certain when Goaheadwiththeplan fell after being overtaken, but Fado Des Brosses looked to be going the better and won easily, beating the well-backed favourite Minella Lightning by 15 lengths. The winner, a €45,000 Land Rover Sale graduate last June and now likely to be sold, could be a useful recruit for the track, a point not missed by owner Mary Doyle, wife of the Tipperary trainer. “He’s a really good horse. He’ll

In Too Deep travelled well before picking up in the home straight for a five-length victory on debut – there could be plenty more to come from this likable sort hopefully go to the sales now,” she said. Cork native Barry landed a double af ter Per pignan recorded a two and a half-length success in the Sixmilebridge Co-Op Mart, Kerry Co-Op and Pier Head Bar & Restaurant winner of one. The seven-year-old gelding gave former jockey Eddie Power a day to remember having saddled his debut winner as trainer on his first day with runners. After another patient ride from Barry, the son of Robin Des Champs picked up the running jumping the penultimate fence before staying on gamely to see off Alkaa Lion. “We’ve had a great day and I’m over the moon. This is a lovely

horse and he’ll go for a winner of two in a few weeks; we’ll take it from t here t hen,” said t he winning trainer. Rob James teamed up with trainer Cormac Doyle to take the Tattersalls Ireland five-year-old geldings ’ maiden wit h t he debutant In Too Deep. Owned by the Monbeg Farm Racing Partnership, the gelding jumped and travelled well in a prominent position, before lengthening clear in the closing stages for a comprehensive fivelength success over When You’re Ready. It provided the stallion Malinas, who stands at Glenview Stud, with a one-two in the race and connections hinted the €31,000 Derby sale graduate could now be sold. Osca Loca was a poignant winner of the Gain Horse Feeds, Gort Co-Op Mart and MacMahon Oil five-year-old and upwards mares’ maiden, as she was carrying the colours the exors of the late Carl Beame, who passed away last summer. The six-year-old won at the

fif th time of asking having previously raced under rules. Never too far away from the lead, she showed a likable attitude to beat the previously placed False Getaway by four and a half lengths. “This is a mare who will win plenty of races. Chris [O’Donovan] is r iding ver y well and I’m delighted to give him a winner,” said trainer Michael Winters. Clare-native Gearoid O’Loughlin had a day to remember at his local fixture when saddling the first two in the John O’Donnell General Merchant, Clare Marts and Linnanes Lobster Bar open. James Hannon did the steering on the winner Sidetracked, who landed a maiden hunter chase at Clonmel last month. The well-bred six-year-old was positioned in mid-division before r unning on gamely to beat stablemate Home Farm by a length. The odds-on favourite Burning Ambition finished back in third under Rob James. “ H i s l o n g - te r m a i m w i l l hopefully be the Bishopscourt

Serious Mood (far side) before winning the concluding maiden

Cup in Punchestown. I’m thrilled with the run of Home Farm as well,” said O’Loughlin. Hannon brought up a double in the concluding Kilnacrandy Farm and Clare Road Tyres sixyear-old geldings’ maiden on Serious Mood. The son of Scor pion was winning at his fourth attempt having shaped with promise on all his starts.

Sporting the colours of Sarah Hogan, the six-year-old gelding disputed the running before fighting out a thrilling finish with the previously placed Generator City, a head separating the pair at the line. “This horse has been unlucky up to now. We thought he was working well and thankfully he got the job done. He’ll be sold now,” said trainer Norman Lee.
