SUMMER YEARLINGS FIRST-SEASON SIRES
Welcome to our essential sales guide
I
T IS ridiculous, really, that we’re on the eve of yearling sales season in Europe – it seems barely five minutes ago that we were putting the Bloodstock Review to bed, reflecting on all 2021 had brought. But here we are, with the Arqana August Yearling Sale about to kickstart the merry-go-round. It will likely provide a spectacular springboard, with highlights set to include a brother to Sealiway, a brother to Sottsass, a half-sister to Native Trail, a half-sister to Nashwa, and a half-brother to Treve. It will be interesting to see how the new format works, with the sale taking place over three days, from 2pm on Saturday and from 5.30pm on Sunday and Monday. The Prix Jacques le Marois across the road at Deauville racecourse on Sunday gives the middle day a proper blue-chip feel. Just because trade at the breeze-ups and store sales has been strong does not automatically mean the yearling sales will follow suit, but it would be a major surprise if they don’t. In this Summer Yearlings supplement, we also bring you the lowdown on the Goffs UK Premier Sale in Doncaster, the Tattersalls Somerville Sale in Newmarket, and BBAG’s flagship Baden-Baden auction that effectively add up to a first half of the European yearling sales circuit. Kitty Trice, Martin Stevens and Scott Burton cover the bases, through star graduates, the lots to look out for and interviews. We will, of course, be bringing you all the details of the key trades as they happen, online and in the newspaper, plus previews and analysis of the action, which extends into the autumn. Strap yourself in as we’re about to take off! ANDREW SCUTTS, BLOODSTOCK MANAGING EDITOR

OO DARN HOT was the most expensive new recruit to the European stallion ranks in 2020, having been installed in Dalham Hall Stud at a fee of £50,000 on the back of being an unbeaten champion two-year-old and dual Group 1 winner at three with an impeccable pedigree to boot, as a son of Dubawi and Dar Re Mi. The majority of his yearlings are set to go under the hammer at the autumn yearling sales, but there are some extremely appealing opportunities to get in early and net one this summer. Too Darn Hot’s draft at Arqana August includes a filly out of dual Italian Group 2 winner Night Music, a Sea The Stars half-sister to German champion Night Magic (lot 66), from Haras du Cadran and a half-brother to Poule d’Essai des Pouliches heroine Beauty Parlour (220) from Baroda Stud. The pick of the sire’s three lots at Goffs UK Premier on paper is probably Newsells Park Stud’s three-parts brother to Group 2 winner and Group 1-placed Aljamaaheer (74), while another impressive page belongs to Gestüt Brümmerhof’s BBAG-bound half-brother to multiple Group 3 scorer Namos (54).
Regally bred Too Darn Hot was the most expensive new recruit to the European stallion ranks in 2020
The class of 2022 first-crop yearling sires includes four Classic winners, all of whom have lots to offer on pedigree. Magna Grecia, who took the Vertem Futurity at two, has received a big update to his page since retiring to Coolmore, as an Invincible Spirit half-brother to last year’s four-time Group 1 hero St Mark’s Basilica. His largest draft this summer comes at Goffs UK, where the eight on offer include a half-brother to useful sprinter Justineo out of Listed winner Loulwa (103) from Hillwood Stud.
Irish National Stud, has seven entered to sell at Doncaster this month, including fillies out of Italian champion two-year-old filly Fly On The Night (7) from Drummona House, and Listed-placed Beach Wedding, whose first foal, Dark Thirty, ran third in the Superlative Stakes this season (358), from Lynn Lodge Stud. Among Phoenix Of Spain’s trio of lots at Tattersalls Somerville, the Ringfort Stud-consigned colt out of Empress Stakes runner-up Pearl Diva (9) catches the eye.
Both lots by Magna Grecia available at the Tattersalls Somerville Sale also happen to be siblings to black-type winners – Max Ervine’s half-brother to Marygate and Westow Stakes scorer Main Desire (23) and Whitwell Bloodstock’s half-sister to French Listed winner Partner Shift (102). Magna Grecia had to settle for fifth behind Phoenix Of Spain in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, with Too Darn Hot in second. The winner that day, a welcome stallion son of Lope De Vega who stands at the
Derby hero Masar, by New Approach from the family of Urban Sea, has an unusual race record for an Epsom Classic winner as he won over six furlongs on debut in May at two and held a high level of form that season. He was also a close third in the 2,000 Guineas. Houghton Bloodstock consigns both the Dalham Hall sire’s lots at Goffs UK Premier, one of whom is a half-brother to seven-time winner Equidae out of a Pivotal mare from a top Moyglare Stud family (415), while Norris Bloodstock’s half-brother to two scorers out of a winning half-sister to high-class sprinter Mince (26) is one of two chances to buy a horse by the sire at Tattersalls Somerville. As is the case for Masar, most of the opportunities to buy a yearling by Prix du Jockey Club victor Study Of Man lie in the autumn. But Lanwades Stud’s son of Deep Impact from the family of Miesque has three lots at BBAG not to be missed, including Gestüt Fährhof’s filly out of Prix du Lutèce third Mystic Sunshine (147), related to German champion two-year-old Monami and her Classic-winning daughter Miss Yoda. Waldgeist (right) was only a short head off being a Classic winner, when pipped at the post by Brametot in the French Derby. The son of Galileo from an incredibly fruitful family was already a Group 1 winner at two and went on to land the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud,

from Advertise to Waldgeist Prix Ganay and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in a glittering career. The Ballylinch Stud resident, whose debut foals were in notably strong demand last year, is well represented at the early yearling sales in France and Germany. He is showcased in Deauville by his home stud offering a colt out of a placed Dark Angel half-sister to Group 3 winner New Providence (63) and by his co-owner and breeder Gestüt Ammerland presenting a colt out of the Listed-winning Lope De Vega mare Sassella (124). Ammerland’s consignment to BBAG includes more beautifully bred Waldgeist yearlings, namely a filly out of German Oaks third Aigrette Garzette (25), a half-brother to Irish 2,000 Guineas third Blue De Vega (79), a half-brother to US Grade 3 winner Dalika (133) and a half-sister to Group 3-placed Magical Beat (143). If raw speed is more your thing, there were some top-notch sprinters among the 2020 intake of sires. Blue Point, a son of Shamardal who marked himself down as a rare talent by winning the King’s Stand and Diamond Jubilee Stakes four days apart at Royal Ascot in 2019 before retiring to Kildangan Stud, fields strong delegations to the summer yearling sales. The well-supported sire has eight on offer at Deauville this month and Ammerland is responsible for the most strikingly well-bred lot among them, as it offers a filly out of its dual French Classic heroine Golden Lilac (290). The pedigrees of Ecurie des Monceaux’s half-brother to Group 3 winner Devant (251) and Haras de Saint-Pair’s filly out of Poule d’Essai des Pouliches runner-up Irish Rookie (311) aren’t too shabby, either. There is a cracker of a page among the quartet of Blue Points catalogued for Goffs UK Premier, too, with Longview Stud set to sell a colt out of Listed-winning sprinter Riskit Fora Biskit (203). Advertise, a son of Showcasing who was a three-time Group 1 winner in the Phoenix Stakes, Commonwealth Cup and Prix Maurice de Gheest, was originally sourced at Goffs UK Premier and he has a strong representation at this year’s auction. His sextet in Doncaster
Commonwealth Cup winner Eqtidaar (right) has 12 of his first-crop yearlings set to sell at the Tattersalls Somerville Sale next month
include the Whatton Manor Stud-consigned colt out of stakes-winning Royal Applause mare Simmy’s Temple (236) and Stratford Place Stud’s half-brother to smart pair Acapulco Gold and Ken Colt out of the Group 3-placed Velvet Revolver (301). Ten Sovereigns, a son of No Nay Never who had been an unbeaten Middle Park Stakes winner at two, had the measure of Advertise in the July Cup and appears in the index of sires in catalogues for most of the summer yearling sales. The five by the Coolmore sire at Arqana August include a half-sister to Prix d’Arenberg winner Yakaba out of Listed scorer Kayaba from the Fairway Consignment (7); the eight at Goffs UK Premier include Jamie Railton’s half-sister to Listed winners Band Practice and Nice Name (21); and the three at Tattersalls Somerville include a half-sister to highly rated Prop Forward out of dual Listed winner My Propeller offered by Keith Harte (303). Another son of reliable speed source No Nay Never with first-crop yearlings on the ground is Richmond Stakes winner Land Force. Highclere Stud’s charge, who hails from the fabulous family of Cassandra Go, Halfway To Heaven and Magical, has 17 lots bound for Goffs UK Premier and nine for Tattersalls Somerville. Look out for the Folland-Bowen Bloodstockconsigned half-brother to three winners out of Listed Richmond winner Land Force is well represented at this year's summer yearling sales
scorer Kasumi (71) and Natton House Thoroughbreds’ half-brother to the aforementioned Fly On The Night (122) at Doncaster, and for Oaks Farm Stables’ half-brother to two winners out of stakes-placed Byrony (152) at Newmarket. Soldier’s Call, another by the increasingly influential Showcasing and a winner of the Flying Childers at two and multiple Group 1-placed at three, has predictably deep drafts at Goffs UK Premier and Tattersalls Somerville. There are no fewer than 15 to choose from at Doncaster, with his custodian Ballyhane Stud sending a half-brother to classy pair Fact Or Folklore and Laviniad (59) and Tinnakill House consigning a half-brother to Marygate Stakes winner Sardinia Sunset (212). Among those heading to Newmarket next month is a filly out of Group 3-placed Megec Blis, making her a half-sister to Listed-placed sprinter Kyllang Rock (292) from Trickledown Stud. Breeders were spoilt for choice of new stallions from the Invincible Spirit line in 2020 and his Group 2-winning and Group 1-placed sons Inns Of Court and Invincible Army proved particularly popular at Tally-Ho and Yeomanstown respectively. Inns Of Court has 17 lots at Goffs UK Premier, including Moigne Combe Stud’s half-sister to Abernant Stakes winner Keystroke (8) and Tally-Ho’s own half-sister to the admirably prolific Corinthia Knight (303), and the same number at Tattersalls Somerville, among them a half-brother to Cornwallis Stakes runner-up Clem Fandango (25) and half-sister to Group 2-placed sprinter Big Boots (176), both from Tally-Ho again. Invincible Army’s 14-strong contingent at Doncaster features a colt out
of Group 3-placed Shes Ranger (231) from Yeomanstown and a half-sister to dual Listed winner Washaar (390) from Ringfort Stud, while the six going to Newmarket next month include a half-sister to Pomfret Stakes scorer Another Touch (119) from Yeomanstown. Nunnery Stud’s Eqtidaar, another by Invincible Spirit in this peer group, has covered
fewer mares but shouldn’t be underestimated as a Commonwealth Cup-winning half-brother to Dewhurst and 2,000 Guineas runner-up Massaat. Tattersalls Somerville might be his time to shine as he has 12 on offer there, two of whom are siblings to stakes winners – Fernham Farm’s half-brother to Prix Hampton victor Stormbringer (31) and Byerley
Stud’s half-sister to Del Mar Listed scorer Jakaby Jade (109). Calyx, the runaway winner of the Coventry Stakes who was bought from Juddmonte to stand at Coolmore, is another representative of this line as he was the first by Invincible Spirit’s brilliant son Kingman to be assigned a stallion role. Among his standout lots on pedigree this summer are Haras des Capucines’ closely related half-brother to Prix de Fontainebleau winner Welwal (235) at Arqana, Browne Brothers Bloodstock’s half-sister to fine sprinter Easton Angel (250) at Goffs UK and Norris Bloodstock’s half-sister to the useful handicapper Notre Belle Bete (123) at Tattersalls. Invincible Spirit’s half-brother Kodiac is the sire of the great white hope of the German stallion ranks, Grosser Preis von Baden and Caulfield Cup hero Best Solution. BBAG boasts 13 first-generation yearlings by the sire, headed by a half-brother to this season’s Italian Derby winner, Ardakan, from Gestüt Röttgen (76).

SUMMER YEARLINGS GOFFS UK El Caballo
3yo b c Havana GoldShowstoppa (Showcasing) El Caballo first went through the ring at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale in 2019, when breeder Whitsbury Manor Stud sold him to Luke James for 17,000gns. Nine months or so later, he was reoffered through Battlefield Stud as a yearling in Doncaster, where the hammer came down at £30,000. It has proved to be money very well spent by trainer Karl Burke, who signed the docket, with El Caballo notching six wins and a second from his first seven starts. The Havana Gold colt was bred out of Showcasing’s daughter Showstoppa, a winner over five and six furlongs, and is a half-brother to Italian juvenile winner Avengers Queen, who landed the Listed Premio Mario E Vittorio Crespi, while year younger half-sister Katey Kontent has also been doing the family proud by winning her first two starts this season and finishing a decent sixth in the Queen Mary Stakes. Her older sibling was second on his debut at two but won his next couple of starts of 2021, and continued where he left off this year. The high point is his victory in the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock.

2020 sale, going to £40,000 to secure the son of Kodi Bear out of Lilbourne Lad’s daughter Lil’s Joy, who won twice at two. She can produce juvenile
winners as well, with Ever Given getting off the mark first time and adding three more successes while earning prize-money on all eight starts
last year. The most valuable triumph came in the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Stakes. Full-sister Harmony Lil matched her dam by winning

As for Ever Given, he has gone on to do well at three, winning the Listed Surrey Stakes at Epsom, finishing third in the Group 3 Criterion Stakes at Newmarket and then was far from disgraced upped again in class in the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, when sixth behind Sandrine.
Isaac Shelby
2yo ch c Night Of ThunderKentucky Belle (Heliostatic) This colt has the honour of gracing the sale’s catalogue this year, his battling success over favourite Victory Dance in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at the July meeting ensuring pride of place for the son of Night Of Thunder. Isaac Shelby was bred by Elaine Chivers out of Heliostatic’s unraced daughter Kentucky Belle, who she acquired for 4,500gns, and named after the first governor of Kentucky, who later served a second term. The name Shelby has become synonymous with the TV series Peaky Blinders, but thanks to the Brian Meehan-trained colt is also making a splash in our world. Isaac Shelby was offered at last year’s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale through Ruth Pitman’s Park Wood Stud, and made £92,000 to Sam Sangster.
Sent to Meehan and into the ownership of Manton Thoroughbreds, and wearing the famous Sangster silks, Isaac Shelby, whose older half-sister Sirya Star won at two in Italy, was quite well fancied on his debut at Newbury and duly won going away by three and a half lengths. That was over six and a half furlongs and, edged up to seven furlongs at the July course, he followed up gamely to leave connections harbouring early Classic hopes.
Malavath
3yo ch f Mehmas-Fidaaha (New Approach) Malavath would go on to be one of a growing number of poster girls and boys for the breeze-up sales, but her first sales ring date was at the 2020 version of this auction, when offered by Tally-Ho Stud. By that stud’s fine sire Mehmas and the first foal of New Approach’s daughter Fidaaha, who showed little in four starts on the track but is a sister to Del Mar Grade 3 winner Ceisteach and half-sister to dual Group 3 winner Steip Amach, Malavath sold to Star Bloodstock for £29,000. She commanded a heftier sum of £120,000 back at Doncaster the following spring

SUMMER YEARLINGS GOFFS UK Kitty Trice with her pick of 12 yearlings from the catalogue who could grab the limelight in Doncaster Lot 7 ch f Phoenix Of Spain-Fly On The Night (Equiano) Consigned by Drummona House This filly by the Irish National Stud’s Irish 2,000 Guineas winner will be one of the first lots into the ring at Doncaster and she should attract a flurry of bids if her page is anything to go by. The April-born lot is the third foal out of Equiano mare Fly On The Night, a champion two-year-old filly in Italy whose wins included the Group 3 Prix du Bois and Listed Premio Alessandro Perrone. Her first foal, the two-year-old Invincible Spirit filly Shawasha, made 150,000gns when selling from this year’s Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale, having cost 55,000gns as a yearling from the December Sale. Fly On The Night is out of a half-sister to Ballyogan Stakes winner Miss Anabaa and to the dam of Prix Robert Papin winner Ventura Tormenta. Further back, it is also the family of champion European sprinter and July Cup winner Owington.
Lot 15 ch f Decorated Knight-Gilt Edge Girl (Monsieur Bond) Blue Diamond Stud Blue Diamond Stud consigns a filly by the Irish National Stud-based second-season sire Decorated Knight, whose
Too Darn Hot colt and filly by Cracksman are just two to catch the eye uptake of winners has shown no signs of slowing in recent weeks. She is a daughter of Prix de l’Abbaye winner Gilt Edge Girl and therefore a half-sister to two winners, including Time’s Arrow, a son of Redoute’s Choice who landed the Listed Prix Servanne. Gilt Edge Girl is out of Tahara and so is a half-sibling to Flying Childers Stakes winner Godfrey Street and to the dam of Sirenia Stakes winner Streamline. Under the third dam, Park Stakes winner and Irish 1,000 Guineas third Tarwiya, is Prix Morny scorer and sire Arcano, as well as Curragh Cup winner Sword Fighter and Chesham Stakes victor Big Audio.
at the upcoming yearling sales will be in plenty of demand. Glebe Farm Stud’s filly has an attractive and precocious pedigree, being out of Exceed And Excel’s Lowther Stakes winner Infamous Angel, and a half-sister to the dam of this season’s Hoppings Fillies’ Stakes winner Poptronic, by Nathaniel. This colt is one of only three yearlings by the three-time Group 1 winner at this sale and he catches the eye as a close relation to Dubawi’s classy Summer Mile winner and Queen Anne Stakes runner-up Aljamaaheer. The Dubawi-Rainbow Quest nick has produced a dual Group 3 winner in Astrophysical Jet and nine winners overall, while this colt’s page received a nice boost with Naval Crown’s Platinum Jubilee success in June, the Godolphin runner featuring under the third dam, Irish 1,000 Guineas and Moyglare Stud Stakes heroine Arctique Royale.

excellent and timely boost when his three-parts brother Isaac Shelby defended his unbeaten record when taking the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket last month. Offered by Ruth Pitman’s Park Wood Stud, the Al Kazeem colt is the fourth foal out of the unraced Kentucky Belle, a half-sister to American Grade 2 winner Ramazutti and from a family filled with American Graded performers. Isaac Shelby looks set to have a crack at more Group-race targets, including the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster next month, and there could therefore be add-ons to his sibling’s value.
colt immediately takes the eye on pedigree. He is the second foal out of Qatar Racing’s Group-winning Frankel mare Lightening Quick (inset, right), who is in turn a daughter of Cheveley Park Stakes heroine Lightening Pearl. Lightening Pearl is a sister to Japanese champion Satono Crown, whose victories included the Takarazuka Kinen and Hong Kong Vase. Lightening Quick’s first foal, the Zoustar filly Starstriker, has run twice in the US, while she has a Kingman colt at foot. It is a page that definitely has the potential for further updates.

Consigned by Baroda Stud, the colt is also from the family of the stakes-placed Wisdom Mind, by Dark Angel, and the promising Noble Dynasty, a son of Dubawi who sold to Godolphin for 3,600,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2019. The third dam is the multiple Group-winning Cheyenne Star, while other notable family members further down the page include the durable Sprint Cup and Prix de la Forêt winner Gordon Lord Byron.
Lot 201 b c Le Brivido-Rioticism (Rio De La Plata) Overbury Stud It has been a busy period for Overbury, with Jayne McGivern sending the stud her recent acquisition, the Derby and Arc hero Golden Horn, and this colt has plenty going for him, in particular the recent Sapphire Stakes success of his half-sister Ladies Church, a daughter of leading second-season sire and dual Guineas winner Churchill. By a Jersey Stakes winner and Poule d’Essai des Poulains second in Le Brivido, the colt
is the second foal out of Rioticism, a daughter of the late Rio De La Plata whose three wins included the Listed Prix des Rêves d’Or. Rioticism hails from a family that includes Prix Saint-Alary scorer Rosefinch and stakes winners Roscius, True Story and Team Talk.
Lot 213 ch c Ulysses-Russian Punch (Archipenko) Bearstone Stud Deborah O’Brien’s colt is one of the standouts – certainly on paper – of the two-day sale given his half-brother Bradsell’s exploits this season, not least his runaway win at Royal Ascot. Bradsell, who sold at the Tattersalls Somerville Sale as a yearling to Highflyer and Harry Dunlop for just 12,000gns, exploded on to the scene in May when a nine-length winner of a York novice, while his Coventry success was followed by a fourth in the Phoenix Stakes, in which the colt unfortunately suffered a season-ending injury. This colt also has the attraction of being by an
up-and-coming sire in Cheveley Park Stud’s Ulysses, a dual Group 1-winning son of Galileo and Oaks heroine Light Shift who has been well advertised by the likes of Ballysax Stakes winner and Irish Derby second Piz Badile, Chesham Stakes scorer Holloway Boy and the promising Listed winner Mighty Ulysses. Russian Punch was no slouch on the track herself, striking at Listed level in the Radley Stakes, while her three-year-old Mayson filly, May Punch, has also won, taking her dam’s record to two winners from three runners.
Lot 220 b f Iffraaj-Saria (Stimulation) Llety Farms A filly with plenty of residual value as she is out of a half-sister to two black-type performers, notably the Flying Childers Stakes winner and Nunthorpe runner-up Soldier’s Call, a son of Showcasing who is now based at Ballyhane Stud and who has his first yearlings selling this term. Soldier’s Call won four times for Archie Watson, with his other black-type wins coming in the Windsor Castle Stakes and Prix d’Arenberg, while he was also third in the King’s Stand and Prix de l’Abbaye.
He and Saria are half-siblings to the Listed-placed dual winner King Leo.
Lot 272 b f Kodiac-Taliyna (Dawn Approach) Tally-Ho Stud Any lot offered by Tally-Ho Stud is worth a second look and this daughter of its stalwart sire Kodiac has a quality pedigree full of black-type winners and performers. She is the first foal out of Taliyna, who is in turn out of a Dalakhani mare in Galtres Stakes winner and Park Hill Stakes third Tanoura, making her a half-sister to Silver Flash
A close relation to lot 220, Flying Childers winner Soldier’s Call will have his first yearlings sell in 2022
Stakes winner Tanaza, by Dubawi, and Prix du Pin scorer Taniyar, by Shamardal. Tanoura is out of Pretty Polly Stakes winner Takarouna, who is also the dam of American Grade 2 scorer Takarian and the Royal Whip Stakes winner Takali. Takarouna is a sister to Dante Stakes winner Torjoun and is out of a sister to Top Ville.
Lot 341 b f Cracksman-Ashadihan (Kyllachy) Trinity Park Stud Darley’s first-season sire and dual European champion Cracksman has made a great start to his second career, with seven winners led by unbeaten Listed scorer Dance In The Grass, thus guaranteeing his yearlings won’t be overlooked. Trinity Park’s filly is out of the Kyllachy mare Ashadihan, winner of the Chartwell Fillies’ Stakes and second in the Albany. Ashadihan is a half-sister to another black-type winner in Beauty Filly, by Invincible Spirit, and the pair are out of a twice-raced half-sister to Sander Camillo, winner of the Albany and Cherry Hinton Stakes. The third dam is Staraway, whose 20 wins in the US included a handful at stakes level.
OAK LODGE & SPRINGFIELD HOUSE STUD BY GROUP 1 SOCIETY ROCK Champion 2yo and Group 1 winner of the Prix Morny Group 1 in the fastest time in the last ten years faster than Lady Aurelia, Shalaa, No Nay Never, Dabirsim, Johannesburg, Zafonic and Machiavellian.

SUMMER YEARLINGS GOFFS UK MOIGNE COMBE STUD Martin Stevens speaks to the people behind fledgling venture
T
HERE is, quite rightly, a lot of consternation about the diminishing number of private thoroughbred studs in Britain, but there is good news about one magnificent property that has been converted to such purposes in recent years by its enthusiastic new owners. The picture-perfect Moigne Combe Estate in Dorset was built in 1900 and formerly owned by the Bond family, who inspired Ian Fleming’s fictional spy, before its purchase by horse lovers Justin and Emma MacRae around three years ago. With the help of family friend and experienced stud manager Paddy O’Shea, they have installed purpose-built
On a mission, the team with big ambitions facilities that include a state-of-the-art stable yard complete with extra-large padded foaling boxes, as well as a six-horse walker, a 30ft round pen and a large all-weather turnout. The newly minted Moigne Combe Stud makes its consigning debut at this month’s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale with three eye-catchingly well-bred pinhooks – an Inns Of Court half-sister to Abernant Stakes winner Keystroke (lot 8), a Kodiac half-brother to Listed-placed True To Herself
(359), and an Acclamation colt out of Hilary Needler Trophy scorer Chica La Habana (380). “We’ve been heavily involved in polo over the last ten years, and owned legs in a few jumpers and point-to-pointers and bred a few, but the Flat side is brand new to us,” says Emma MacRae. “We always loved the idea of having our own stud, and when we bought Moigne Combe it just seemed the perfect location to do it. “We’re big believers that if you’re going to do something, you might as well do it well, so we want to establish a
high-quality, boutique breeding operation, with the emphasis on quality. We’ve invested a significant amount in it, and believe we’ve got the right people and right horses in place.” Those horses who are enjoying the lush proven pasture on the 141-acre estate – “they have to go on a diet more often than not,” laughs MacRae – comprise four broodmares and two other pinhooks bound for Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. MacRae and O’Shea braved
Emma MacRae and Paddy O’Shea at the picturesque Moigne Combe Stud
last year’s bull market for foals by picking the pinhooks together at Goffs and Tattersalls in November. “We didn’t want to set the world on fire – we went for lots by good sires with nice pages, and we came away feeling that we hadn’t paid over the odds considering the market conditions,” says MacRae. “It really was pure luck that
we managed to get the half-sister to Keystroke for such a good price [€24,000]. Paddy had his eye on her all along, but there were quite a few by the sire going through around the same time, and we were surprised we got her for what we did. She wasn’t even pencilled in as a maybe, she was one we firmly wanted, so someone was looking after us.

‘We want to produce quality horses by top stallions’ Paddy O’Shea, manager of Moigne Combe Stud
“We think we got excellent value for money with the Kodiacs and Acclamations we bought too.” Regarding the new business’s approach to pinhooking, MacRae adds: “We’re looking at doing it in the long term, so that we have a range of options of generating income, and looking at how well the horses have thrived here since we bought them, we think we’ve made the right decision. “Paddy’s been instrumental in all of it. He’s meticulous in his care for the horses. He insists on hand-walking them
and keeping numbers at a reasonable level so he doesn’t compromise the one-on-one treatment he gives them.” O’Shea gives a run-down on the inaugural Moigne Combe Stud draft at Doncaster, saying: “They’re three cracking individuals. “The Inns Of Court filly is a half-sister to a Group 3 winner and from a wonderful Cheveley Park Stud family. She’s a big, correct, racy filly with an amazing walk, plenty of scope and a great temperament. “Then we have a big, strong colt by Kodiac out of a good
black type-producing mare bred by Lady O’Reilly from the family of Petrushka, and a precocious, big-walking, free-moving colt by Acclamation out of a very fast two-year-old winner by Havana Gold. “We have two other colts in sales prep at the moment, both for Book 2 – an Acclamation from the family of Alexandrova and a Kodiac out of a daughter of the Group 1-winning mare Fraulein.” Giving more detail on the first broodmare residents of Moigne Combe Stud, he adds:
“It’s always a tough decision whether to buy proven mares or young, commercial but unproven mares. We decided to go for a bit of both and so the first mare bought was Laughing Dove, who’s out of Cherry Hinton Stakes winner Asfurah. “She has a sharp filly foal by Ardad at foot, and she’s back safely in foal to Ardad. She’s a lovely mare and had a great Sea The Moon colt who made £85,000 at last year’s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale. “The next in-foal mare we purchased, at Goffs in
November, was Fleur De Cactus, who was bred by Ballymacoll Stud from the family of Islington. She’s the dam of two black-type horses and has a gorgeous colt by Phoenix Of Spain at foot and is back in foal to Havana Grey.” The tally of broodmares at Moigne Combe Stud was doubled by the private purchase of two mares from Kingwood Stud this year. “Both are well-bred and barren from the previous season, which suited us as we wanted to use Irish stallions but didn’t want to send our young foals on the long journey,” says O’Shea. “We used Lucky Vega on Comeback Queen, a black-type mare who is the dam of five winners with a great page. Our oldest mare is now Something Exciting, who finished second in the Oaks and is the dam of
the black-type horse Istan. She visited Nando Parrado. “We want to produce quality horses by top stallions at Moigne Combe Stud and I’m a big fan of using stallions who produce precocious horses, and we used Ardad and Havana Grey because of that. Hopefully, Nando Parrado and Lucky Vega will follow suit.” “Paddy’s like an encyclopaedia,” marvels MacRae. “Justin and I intend to dip our toes into racing later this year, but in the meantime Paddy has entertained us with a racing syndicate he started that involves the rugby legend Sean O’Brien, called BlueHenHorseRacing.com.” The Moigne Combe Stud team undoubtedly have lofty ambitions for the business, inspired perhaps by the Bond family’s familiar motto that is inscribed above the door of the main house: Non Sufficit Orbis, or The World Is Not Enough. “I’m really excited for Doncaster, and looking forward to catching up with all the contacts we made at Goffs last year,” says MacRae. “It will be good to take the pinhooking process full circle.” And is the world not enough for this up-and-coming consignor? “Oh absolutely!” she responds. “Let’s just hope it’s not a case of the money is not enough.”

SUMMER YEARLINGS TATTERSALLS SOMERVILLE
Likely types who could star in sales ring . . . Half a dozen yearlings who stand out on paper and could light up Park Paddocks Lot 67 gr/ro f Havana Grey-Springing Baroness (Bertolini) Consigned by Hillwood Stud Leading first-season sire Havana Grey has made a blistering start to his stud career and his progeny are likely to be in huge demand as the yearling sales season gets under way. This April-born filly, consigned by Hillwood Stud, is out of a six-time winner in Springing Baroness and is a half-sister to Molecomb Stakes third Show Me Show Me (above), by another of Whitsbury Manor Stud’s
stallions in the admirable Showcasing. Under the second dam, Spring Surprise, is another son of Showcasing in Mill Reef Stakes winner Toocoolforschool, while there are also plenty of classy American performers further down the page, such as Grade 3 winner Cannon Boy.
Lot 73 b f ProfitableStreet Fire (Street Cry) The National Stud This is a filly with plenty of appeal, being out of Street Cry mare Street Fire, the dam of Group 1 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 scorer Salute The Soldier. His other victories include the Group 2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 and Group 3 Burj Nahaar.
The filly’s second-season sire is responsible for five black-type winners, including Queen Mary Stakes scorer Quick Suzy, while her dam hails from a family which includes Breeders’ Cup Classic hero Skywalker, another US Grade 1 winner in Monzante and Grade 2 Malibu Stakes scorer and Hollywood Derby third Pac Mania.
Lot 119 b f Invincible Army-Alsalwa (Nayef) Yeomanstown Stud High-class sprinter and Yeomanstown Stud resident Invincible Army has his first yearlings to sell this term and hopes are high they will follow in the success of his foals last year; for example, the colt out of Living Art who sold to Peter and Ross Doyle for €85,000 at the Goffs November Sale. This filly is out of the winning Nayef mare Alsalwa and is a half-sister to Listed Pomfret Stakes scorer Another
Touch, by Arcano, as well as three other winners. Under the second dam, the Danehill mare Ros The Boss, is Bengough Stakes winner Eastern Impact and Abernant Stakes victor Summerghand, both out of Ros The Boss’s daughter Kate The Great.
Lot 132 b f Bated Breath-Atlantic Drift (Oasis Dream) Trickledown Stud The March-born daughter of Bated Breath is already related to a Group performer in the shape of Marble Hill Stakes second and Railway Stakes third Arctician, the pair out of an Oasis Dream half-sister to Sussex Stakes hero and Tweenhills’ first-season sire Lightning Spear.
This filly’s second dam, the Royal Academy mare Atlantic Destiny, was a multiple stakes winner in Britain and the US and has also produced stakes winner Ocean War and two other stakes performers.
Lot 218 b c Mayson-Finalize (Firebreak) Bearstone Stud Mayson has established himself as a reliable source of classy and genuine performers, and this yearling half-brother to Group 1 performer Ventura Rebel (left) is likely to have been noted by plenty of prospective buyers. Out of the once-raced Firebreak mare Finalize, this colt’s Pastoral Pursuits half-brother won three times for Richard Fahey, including the Renaissance Stakes at the Curragh in 2020,

2yo b c Tasleet-Russian Punch (Archipenko) Bred by Deborah O’Brien, Bradsell is the fourth foal out of Listed Radley Stakes winner Russian Punch and is a half-brother to a minor winner in May Punch. He sold to Highflyer and Harry Dunlop for 12,000gns at last year’s Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale, a price that has come to look an absolute bargain. He was consigned by Mark Grant to the breeze-ups in the spring and changed hands again, this time for £47,000 to Blandford Bloodstock. On his debut for the Archie Watson yard, he ran out an impressive nine-length winner at York, booking his ticket for the Coventry Stakes. The son of Shadwell’s first-season sire Tasleet did not disappoint at Royal Ascot, beating a deep field of 16 rivals. The form has since been boosted by runner-up Persian Force, who won the July Stakes, third-placed Royal Scotsman, winner of the Richmond Stakes, and fourth home Blackbeard, who landed the Prix Robert Papin. He was sent off favourite for

Bradsell, who cost just 12,000gns at this sale last year, spreadeagles the field in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes
Swiss Dream, this colt sold from Bearstone Stud to Blandford Bloodstock and Middleham Park Racing for 45,000gns last September. Bradsell’s stablemate is proving to be a highly consistent son of Whitsbury Manor Stud’s red-hot first-season sire Havana Grey, justifying favouritism at Southwell on his debut and progressing well on turf. He belied odds of 40-1 to finish third in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot
and occupied the same spot in the Dragon Stakes at Sandown, also at Listed level. His day in the sun then arrived in the valuable Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury. Eddie’s Boy was then far from disgraced in fourth on his first crack at Group level in the Molecomb at Goodwood.
New Collection
2yo br f Brazen Beau-Mutoon (Erhaab) A daughter of Australian
speedster Brazen Beau, New Collection is the ninth foal out of the placed Erhaab mare Mutoon and is a half-sister to six winners. The sextet includes six-time winner Rattling Jewel and Alabama Whitman, who was fourth in the 2019 Albany Stakes behind the smart Daahyeh. The Robert Pocock-bred filly made just 4,500gns here last year when consigned through her breeder’s Stringston Farm but has made
something of a mockery of that price tag. After winning a Capannelle newcomers’ race for fillies over five furlongs by no fewer than six lengths at the start of May, the margin of victory in the Listed Premio Alessandro Perrone back at the same track three weeks later was nearly matched, with New Collection this time running out a five-and-a-half-length winner for trainer Sebastiano Guerrieri, who also part-owns her.

Counterattack on offensive from the off with his first German-sired crop HOLGER FAUST
Zargun (74), a half-brother to Group 3 winner Mylady (144), a half-sister to Group 1-placed No Limit Credit (148), and a half-brother to Preis von Europa heroine Donjah (177). “People who come to the sale will see that all the Counterattacks are particularly good movers – that’s been the case from day one,” says Faust. “Domestic agents have always liked them and I’m excited to see how people outside of Germany rate them, as they’re all very nice yearlings with good pages. “One thing’s for sure: the fact that they’re by Counterattack won’t make them cheaper this season like it might have done in the past.” Karlshof hasn’t placed all its eggs in the Counterattack basket, and its consignment to Baden-Baden features several standout lots by other leading sires.
The bloodstock agent talks to Martin Stevens about a rising star
C
OUNTERATTACK has arguably been the surprise package of this year’s European second-season sires. The Australian-bred son of Redoute’s Choice, who was a Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed sprinter in his native country, has produced small crops in Germany without the fanfare of a lot of his peers, but he boasts a brilliant strike-rate and an ever-growing roll of big-race winners. Counterattack has sired ten winners from 18 runners in 2022 at a clip of 56 per cent, a figure beaten only by Zarak, and his progeny includes the Italian 2,000 Guineas hero See Hector and Listed scorers Peshmerga and Pirouz. One man who is not so surprised by Counterattack’s successful start is bloodstock agent Holger Faust, who arranged the deal to stand the horse at his family’s Gestüt Karlshof, south of Frankfurt. “An Australian agent contacted me to say that his owner, Geoffrey Grimish, was looking for a stud to shuttle him to in Europe, so we looked up the horse and liked what we saw,” says Faust as he recalls how the arrangement came about. “We’d been searching for a son of Redoute’s Choice, so that was a key factor in why we took him, but his pedigree was very interesting actually, as he’s out of a Snippets mare, which means he’s bred on the same cross as the Australian champion sire Snitzel. “He also showed a lot of soundness in his racing career, running 26 times, and he was precocious, fast and tough. We thought he was the full package and that’s why we wanted to give him a go.” Faust might have been convinced but the import of Counterattack was an unusual move for Germany; in fact, he is believed to be the first horse to shuttle from Australia to the country. So what did other breeders make of the exotic visitor? “There was some interest,” Faust says. “But to tell the truth, it’s always pretty much the same for every new stallion in Germany. It doesn’t matter where they come from or how
Shuttle stallion Counterattack has been an instant hit since his secondment to Gestüt Karlshof; (inset) bloodstock agent Holger Faust
they are bred, if they didn’t do something really out of the ordinary in their racing campaign, like win the Arc, the bigger stud farms prefer to stay patient. “So if you decide to stand a stallion in Germany, you know you’re really going to have to make the stallion yourself, and most of the mares he has covered have been our own and those belonging to some small German breeders. Geoffrey Grimish helped out by buying half a dozen mares for him, and one of those was Paper Faces, who is the dam of Peshmerga.” Counterattack covered around 35 mares in total in his first season, which dipped to around 30 in the following years, with the Covid crisis of 2020 and 2021 not helping the cause. He continued to receive a good level of quality mares throughout, though. Those figures make his strong early results all the
more admirable, and Faust says: “Counterattack didn’t have that numerical support you really need to make it as a stallion and that’s why I think he’s outperforming his opportunities. “When you look at his numbers as a whole, he’s had 19 runners in his first two seasons – mostly three-year-olds but a few juveniles already – and he’s had 14 winners. He’s also in fifth position out of 73 second-crop sires worldwide by number of stakes horses, which is an excellent achievement, so I’m really proud of him.” So does Faust feel that Counterattack has earned the respect of German breeders now?
“We’ll see – obviously we won’t know until next year’s breeding season, but I’d be very surprised if he didn’t cover his best book yet in terms of numbers,” he replies. “I sense there’s a lot of respect for him. “It’s always the same; when he had his first black-type winner, people said, ‘Okay, but maybe he’s a one-hit wonder’, but as his success snowballed, and he got his four black-type horses including a Classic winner in Italy, they became more convinced.”
H
AVING strongly supported Counterattack throughout his stallion career, Gestüt Karlshof is now in the deserved position of having some choicely bred lots by an upwardly mobile young

stallion to offer at next month’s BBAG Yearling Sale in Baden-Baden. The Faust family’s draft includes six by the sire – headed by lot 64, a full-sister to See Hector, who was so impressive when collecting his Classic laurels at the Capannelle in May but hasn’t been seen in public since. In the meantime, though, those siblings’ two-year-old full-brother See Paris was an easy winner on his debut for Henk Grewe at Cologne last month. “See Hector suffered a lung infection when he returned from Rome to Cologne, so he needed time to recover, but he should make his comeback next month,” reports Faust. “See Paris is a very good two-year-old, he had to beat some good horses in an auction race. “The key moment will be two days before the sale, on August 31, as See Paris is scheduled to run in the Group 3 Zukunfts-Rennen at Baden-Baden. I expect it to be a strong race, as he could meet a few winners including Gestüt Fahrhof’s exciting filly Habana. “Hopefully, See Paris will win and then we’ll look to get a fair price for the full-sister. She’s a very, very extraordinary filly; really good-looking and athletic, and just a great mover.” Gestüt Karlshof’s band of Baden-Baden-bound Counterattack lots is completed by a colt out of a half-sister to German champion miler Alianthus (26), a half-sister to the Group 3-placed sprinter
F
AUST says the Sea The Stars colt out of the Henrythenavigator mare Seductive (160) – descended from blue hen Sacarina, from whom Karlshof bred German Classic winners Salve Regina, Samum and Schiaparelli, as well as the dam of Sea The Moon – is “a very exciting horse”. “He was bred on a foal share, and we bought the partners out for €105,000 when he was offered at the BBAG mixed sale last October,” he continues. “He has improved very much, and is now just like how the good Sea The Stars look at this time of the year.” Karlshof’s Isfahan full-sister to Group 3 winner and German Oaks runner-up Isfahani (43) is also especially close to Faust’s heart. “This is for me, personally, one of our most exciting lots,” he says. “I bought Isfahani for Darius Racing and she won the Premio Guido Berardelli in Rome on her debut at two, becoming the first German horse in history to win a Group race first time out. “She finished second in the German Oaks and third in a Group 2 at Baden-Baden, and we really believed she was going to run a big race in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, but tragically she died suddenly after suffering a haemorrhage last September. “In my opinion, the sister is even more exciting than Isfahani, who was strong and tall but not the prettiest filly you could imagine. This one is more athletic and more beautiful, which is what you want when you’re buying a yearling filly. She’s very interesting.”

SUMMER YEARLINGS ARQANA Angel Bleu
3yo b c Dark Angel-Cercle De La Vie (Galileo) Another leading offspring of Yeomanstown Stud’s stalwart sire Dark Angel, last season’s dual Group 1-winning juvenile was a €100,000 private sale when offered by Monceaux. Racing in the silks of Marc Chan for trainer Ralph Beckett, the colt won on his second start at Salisbury in April last year and followed up with a victory at Pontefract the following month. He bounced back from defeat in the Coventry with a Listed second in the Pat Eddery Stakes at Ascot, before a first Group success in the Vintage Stakes over Coventry winner Berkshire Shadow. His Goodwood triumph proved to be a stepping stone to greater things as he went on to land a French Group 1 juvenile double in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère and Critérium International. Back at Goodwood last month, he wasn’t disgraced in fifth behind Baaeed in the Sussex Stakes, although a fetlock injury means we won’t see him again until 2023. The Pan Sutong Racing Bloodstock-bred colt is one of 12 winners (from 19 runners) on the Dark Angel-Galileo cross, as he is out of the placed Cercle De La Vie, a sister to the popular globetrotting multiple top-flight winner Highland Reel, as well as Australian Group 1 winner Cape Of Good Hope and three-time Group-race victor Idaho. The quartet are in turn out of a Group 1-placed sister to the top-class Haradasun.
Hello You
3yo b f Invincible Spirit-Lucrece (Pivotal) A fine performer in the silks of Amo Racing, Hello You sold from Haras du Mézeray to Robson Aguiar for €350,000 at the sale in 2020. The daughter of Invincible Spirit was bred by Serge Boucheron and looks a fine broodmare prospect when her racing days are done as she is out of a half-sister to Signs Of Blessing, a gelded son of Invincible Spirit who won the Prix Maurice de Gheest in 2016. Hello You has also proved a more than capable operator on the track, making a wide-margin winning debut at Wolverhampton last year before a fine second in the Albany and a third in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes for Ralph Beckett. Switched to David Loughnane after that Newmarket effort, her four subsequent runs in 2021 included a victory in the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes from subsequent 1,000 Guineas heroine Cachet. Her best efforts from four runs this term are a third in the Nell Gwyn behind Cachet and fourth, not beaten far, in a big-field Oak Tree Stakes behind Oscula.

From ‘€90 in the bank’ to major players LA MOTTERAYE Scott Burton talks to the team behind La Motteraye
I
F THE landscape of thoroughbred breeding across France is unrecognisable from the scene ten or 15 years ago, that is in large part because of the arrival of a new generation of stallion masters and breeders, most of whom travelled extensively before putting down roots in the Normandy soil. Gwenaël Monneraye and Lucie Lamotte have become a growing influence in this new wave through their La Motteraye operation, which will consign 20 yearlings at Arqana August, including a very rare pearl indeed; the first product of 2019 Prix de Diane heroine Channel, a Sea The Stars filly who will make a little bit of Deauville history when she enters the ring. As Monneraye explains, the couple returned from their travels with concrete plans, though they far outstripped their modest means. “The accountant told us we had €90 in the bank and so, to begin with, there was no way we could buy horses to start breeding for ourselves,” he says. “We absolutely had to find
some clients and the story revolves around the people we’d met on our travels. Wherever we went, we’d told people that one day we would go out on our own and that I would be calling them to send us a horse. “That’s exactly what we did and I’d say 20 per cent of people decided to help. But that was fine because we moved in on December 5 and began making calls the following day. By the evening of December 6, the stud was full.” Surveying the sweep of 140 acres of the present-day La Motteraye – soon to grow by another 50 – which nestle in a valley on the border between the Calvados and Orne departments, it is hard to
imagine such threadbare beginnings. Monneraye says: “We rented everything, we couldn’t buy anything. At the end of the first year we went to Arqana with the idea we could start a little bit of pinhooking and they lent us a not-inconsiderable amount of money. I can’t say for sure I would have lent that kind of money to two people under the age of 30. “But it worked because we were able to buy our first mare
and, step by step, it began to snowball.” The early support of Sylvain Vidal and through him Gérard Augustin-Normand was a key break, while the farmer in Monneraye is adamant about the most pivotal element in the La Motteraye story. “The major turning point was the purchase of our first land,” he says. “It took six years from starting out, and owning our own land and building our own barn was like a real breath of fresh air. “We were able to organise the work much better and we’d never had more than one or two staff, so there was no time to think. We were able to take a step back and really put a plan in place for the farm, investing in an intelligent way. That was the real start.” Despite his easy personal manner, Monneraye is a man who plans almost obsessively. The yearling barn is built with the finest materials and is a triumph of labour-saving design – “I spent 15 years mucking out for other people, so had a lot of time to think about how best to do it,” he says – while the acquisition of their own land has enabled the couple to really grow their own breeding operation in parallel with consigning for clients. “Since we’ve been here, we’ve bred [Group 3 winner] Pao Alto from a very small number of mares and then, when we got to 25 mares, [Tattersalls Gold Cup winner]

Alenquer was born and raised on the farm,” he says. “More recently, we bred [Group 3 scorer] Deauville Legend and really the results prove this land is a tremendous boost to what we’re doing. “We’ve been able to continue investing in the broodmare band and we’ve attracted new clients.” Organisation and planning is key in the high-pressure environment of the August sale, whether it is liaising with agents for viewings or clients in the moments before a lot enters the ring. In that sense, Monneraye’s muscle memory of sales around the world will be crucial when the Channel filly goes through. “When she goes into the ring there is obviously pressure but you are in a bubble at that stage,” he says. “You’ve done the maths and we put the reserve in only three lots beforehand. I leave it to the last moment because you are caught up in the action. “We have 60 lots that go through the ring in December
but I manage to speak to each client at the last moment. It has to be then and it takes a lot of organisation. But I think it is our strength that we work so closely with people.” He clearly loves the cut and thrust of the sales ring, whether it is Newmarket in December or on a sultry Deauville summer night.
H
E SAYS: “You might have a doubt whether one person or another is going to be in on a horse, but you get to know people and you can tell a lot by who does what when they are in the ring outside before they go into the pavilion. “I worked for James Egan at Corduff Stud and he taught me a lot about reading the market for a particular horse at the last moment.” And what of the queen herself? Conscious not to favour one client over another, Monneraye is guarded about picking out highlights in the draft, but his eyes light up as we watch the Sea The Stars-Channel filly

(lot 234) led up in front of the offices. “It’s pretty extraordinary,” he says. “I think it’s the first time a first product of a Diane winner has gone through the Arqana ring. It’s amazing to be entrusted with a filly like her.” Memories flood back to the joyous scenes at Chantilly, when Channel made the dreams of Samuel and Elodie de Barros come true, right at the start of their thoroughbred journey. Monneraye says: “The owners have invested heavily over a short time, having previously been involved with trotters, and they have paid a lot for broodmares, while they have gone to Dubawi, Frankel and Sea The Stars for their covers. “It’s fantastic they trust us and, on top of that, they are lovely people who are very passionate about the game. We obviously want to sell the filly as well as possible and it’s just a great thing to be involved with.” Monneraye compares his and his wife’s travels around New Zealand, Australia and the US, as well as Britain and Ireland, to the way Chinese industrialists have observed and learned from their western counterparts. “I can look the English in the eye now and say that I have put everything at my disposal into being as good as they are,” he says.

SUMMER YEARLINGS ARQANA Kitty Trice pinpoints a dozen yearlings who could dazzle in the sales ring in Deauville Lot 10 b c Galiway-Kensea (Kendargent) Consigned by Haras de Colleville The son of Haras de Colleville’s stalwart sire should help proceedings start with a bang as he is a brother to none other than last year’s Champion Stakes hero Sealiway. The four-year-old’s nap hand of career victories also includes the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère of 2020, in which he defeated Coventry Stakes winner Nando Parrado by eight lengths, while he was also second to champion three-year-old St Mark’s Basilica in last year’s Prix du Jockey Club. Sealiway full-brother is up early doors but choice lots abound in quality catalogue Touquettes operation sold this lot’s Kingman half-sister to Godolphin for €950,000 at last year’s sale. The reason is somewhat obvious given they are half-siblings to last year’s European champion two-year-old and now Irish 2,000 Guineas hero Native Trail, who has also run well in defeat twice this year in the Guineas at Newmarket when second behind stablemate Coroebus and when a close third to Vadeni in the Eclipse. This daughter of the Aga Khan’s French champion sire also hails from a brilliant Juddmonte family as her dam is an Observatory sister to Haydock Sprint Cup winner African Rose (the dam of Fair Eva) and to Helleborine, a Group 3 winner at two for Criquette Head and the dam of Coventry Stakes scorer Calyx. They are in turn out of a

Lot 149 b f Kingman-Speralita (Frankel) Haras des Capucines This daughter of Kingman holds plenty of residual value as a racing prospect and broodmare given she is a sister to this season’s Jersey Stakes winner Noble Truth, who was also runner-up in last year’s Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère and was himself a seven-figure purchase from this sale in 2020. The April-born filly is out of the unraced Frankel mare Speralita, a half-sister to the hugely talented Stacelita, a
daughter of Monsun whose victories included the Prix de Diane, Vermeille, Saint-Alary and Beverly D Stakes. Stacelita has proved equally as adept in her second career as she is the dam of champion Japanese filly Soul Stirring, a first top-level (Hanshin Juvenile Fillies) and Classic (Japanese Oaks) winner for Frankel.
Lot 154 ch c Siyouni-Starlet’s Sister (Galileo) Ecurie des Monceaux Monceaux’s brilliant producer Starlet’s Sister is responsible for €3.972 million-worth of yearlings over the years, with Peter Brant’s Arc and Prix du Jockey Club hero Sottsass (inset, right) leading the way
on the racecourse after selling to Oceanic Bloodstock for €340,000 at the sale in 2017. Such is the daughter of Galileo’s dominance, Sottsass’s price tag was dwarfed when his Dubawi half-sister sold for a hefty €2.5m at the 2020 auction to Oliver St Lawrence. Now named Pure Dignity, she provided further lustre to the page when making a winning debut this summer for Roger Varian. Starlet’s Sister is well named as she has also produced another star in multiple US Grade 1 heroine Sistercharlie, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf in 2018 for Chad Brown and Brant. The daughter of Myboycharlie went for just €12,000 at Arqana’s October Yearling Sale in 2015. It is safe to say this colt has plenty to live up to, and fireworks could again be the result of this latest progeny of Starlet’s Sister to take to the Arqana sales ring.
Lot 171 b c Intello-Trevise (Anabaa) Haras du Quesnay Another product of a fabulous producer in the winning Anabaa mare Trevise, this Haras du Quesnay-consigned colt looks a standout on paper given he is a half-brother to

Racing Post Thursday, August 11, 2022
the mighty dual Arc heroine Treve, one of the most accomplished mares of recent years. The colt is also related to the Group 2-placed stakes winner Trois Rois, a daughter of Hernando, and this is a family chock-a-block with quality as the second dam, Trevillari, has produced a Grade 1 performer in Tsigane and is a sister to Prix SaintAlary winner Treble.
Lot 220 b c Too Darn Hot-Bastet (Giant’s Causeway) Baroda Stud Champion two-year-old and Sussex Stakes winner Too Darn Hot has his first yearlings heading for auction and Baroda Stud’s colt could get his sire off to a cracking start. The April-born colt is out of the Listed winner and Group-placed Giant’s Causeway mare Bastet, making him a half-brother to a Classic winner in 2012 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches heroine Beauty Parlour as well as the stakes winner and Grade 2-placed Barocci, both by the much-missed Deep Impact.
Further down the page littered with black-type winners is Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup winner Might And Power, Hong Kong Mile winner Lucky Owners and Listed winner and Grade 1-placed Buenos Dias.
Lot 227 br f Wootton Bassett-Black Dahlia (Dansili) Ecurie des Monceaux SF Bloodstock’s wonderful producer Black Dahlia sadly died this year after foaling and her penultimate progeny by Wootton Bassett looks set to take high rank at this year’s sale. The dam has produced five winners, including Round Tower Stakes scorer and the multiple Group 1-placed Lope Y Fernandez, who has finished his first term at the National Stud, and the ill-fated Vintage Stakes winner Dark Vision, who also struck at Group 2 level in Germany. This filly would take pride of place in any racing yard or, further down the line, broodmare band, and she comes from a family with
plenty of depth as under the third dam is Rockfel Stakes winner Isabella Giles and fellow Group winner Majestic Dubawi.
Lot 234 ch f Sea The Stars-Channel (Nathaniel) La Motteraye Consignment The first foal out of the Prix de Diane winner Channel, a top-class daughter of Nathaniel who already has his first Group 1 winner as a broodmare sire through last year’s Prix Marcel Boussac scorer Zellie, this is a yearling who clearly has the potential to be a big hitter for La Motteraye. There is quality throughout the page as the third dam is Cheveley Park Stakes winner Magical Romance, herself a half-sister to Epsom and Irish Oaks heroine Alexandrova, Derby third Masterofthehorse and Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial second Washington Irving. It is also the family of Prudenzia, the dam of Magic Wand and Chicquita, as well as Melbourne Cup hero Rekindling.
Irish and European champion sire Frankel and from a family with a fine lineage, Monceaux appears to have another lot capable of commanding a sizeable price tag. The colt is out of the winning Shamardal mare Correze – a cross that has produced smart performers like Listed winner Mehnah and Musidora Stakes second Frankellina – who is in turn a half-sister to Group 3 winner Queen’s Best, the dam of Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine Queen’s Trust, stakes winner Urban Castle, herself the dam of triple US Grade 1 winner Domestic Spending, and Reverie Solitaire, a Listed winner and producer of Group 2 scorer Royal Solitaire. Under the third
dam is Italian Derby hero Luso and dual Coronation Cup winner Warrsan.
Lot 247 b f Frankel-Crystal River (Dubawi) Haras d’Etreham The Frankel-Dubawi nick is already responsible for this season’s Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Homeless Songs and Saratoga Oaks winner With The Moonlight, as well as last year’s Derby and King George victor Adayar, and this filly’s page is a sea of black type. The February-born filly is out of the stakes-winning Crystal River, a half-sister to Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère scorer Royal Marine and Godolphin Mile victor Secret Ambition. Their dam, the Singspiel mare
Lot 244 b c Frankel-Correze (Shamardal) Ecurie des Monceaux A son of the reigning British,
Dual Arc heroine Treve is a half-sister to lot 171, a son of Intello
Inner Secret, is a half-sister to Group 1-winning milers Dubai Destination and Librettist, while their half-sister, Dubawi mare Nafura, is the dam of this season’s Lockinge and Queen Anne runner-up Real World, who struck in the Prix Daniel Wildenstein last autumn.
Lot 261 b f Camelot-Elbasana (Indian Ridge) Camas Park & Glenvale Studs There is plenty to like about this filly’s page given she is out of a mare who has produced two black-type performers and is a half-sister to the likes of Gold Cup winners Estimate and Enzeli, as well as Irish Oaks heroine Ebadiyla. In short, it is a wonderful Aga Khan family and she has plenty of residual value for when her second career beckons. Her dam, the Indian Ridge mare Elbasana, is out of the brilliant producer Ebaziya, a Listed winner and Group-placed daughter of Darshaan whose prolific progeny fill up more than half of this filly’s page. As well as Estimate, Enzeli and Ebadiyla, there is also Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Edabiya and Eytarna, the Listed-placed dam of Blandford Stakes and Irish Oaks third Eziyra.
