astonishingthat so much of the year hasgone already that we areinto yearlings supplement season.
Buthereweare, on the eveofthe Arqana August Sale.Wehavethe same FridaytoSundayformat as lastyear, whichcertainly did no harm to the figures, beingupacrossthe board on 2022, when the sale was conductedfromSaturday to Monday.
Generallyspeaking, whatever the category so far this year, trade hasbeen selective. Thereare still plenty of punchyprices for the mediatolatch on to,but, away from the headline lots, it hasbeentough going.
Therecordprice at Arqana,€2.6 million, has stood since 2015. It will be fascinatingtosee how closethis year’s toplot comes to that figure. Certainly, recentstar graduates likeAce Impact and Look De Vega have done their bit for the sale’s reputation, while around two-fifths of the original catalogue areout of black-type mares.
Amongmanywho catch theeye areEtreham’s Dubawi half-brother to Group1winners Wooded and BucaneroFuerte, Monceaux’sStMark’s Basilica half-sister to top-flightwinners Chicquita and Magic Wand, and Beaufay’s Acclamation half-sister to Coventry Stakes winner Rashabar
Aweekand ahalflater and the circuit moveson from DeauvilletoDoncaster and the GoffsUKPremier YearlingSale, at which last year’s figuresclosely resembled2022 levels
BBAG fared slightly less well 12 months agorelative to 2022, butitcontinues to be ayearlingsalethe Racing Post is keen to supportand we’ll be doing so againina coupleofweeks’time.

Bay filly AcclamationAmazonka (Camelot)
Consigned by Haras de Beaufay
This daughter of Acclamation received a royal update when her year-older half-brother Rashabar sprung an 80-1 surprise in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot
The Holy Roman Emperor colt is set to bid for Group 1 success in the Prix Morny at Deauville this Sunday.
The pair are out of Camelot’s unraced daughter Amazonka, whose half-sister River Of Stars, by Sea The Stars, provided another pedigree update when landing the Listed Pontefract Castle Fillies’ Stakes in June She had previously struck at Group 3 level in last year’s Bronte Cup Fillies’ Stakes and was subsequently twice placed at Group 2 level that season.
This filly’s third dam, Amarette, won the Preis der Diana and is the dam and second dam of Group winners, namely Criterium International victor Alson and Oettingen-Rennen winner Ancient Spirit
Lot 109
Ch colt Zarak - Donjah (Teofilo)
Haras de Montaigu Zarak’s stock continues to rise and 2024 has been another excellent year for the Aga Khan sire. His successes have included Metropolitan, winner of the Poule d’Essai des Poulains, and Prix Ganay victor Haya Zark, as well as Prix d’Harcourt scorer Zarakem, who gallantly chased home Auguste Rodin in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot Haras de Montaigu’s colt is the first foal out of Teofilo’s Preis von Europa winner Donjah Teofilo’s broodmare sire record already includes this year’s Oaks heroine Ezeliya and Commonwealth Cup winner Inisherin, as
well as 2022 Guineas winners Coroebus and Cachet
This colt’s page features another top-level winner in the prolific European campaigner Earl Of Tinsdal, while Dante Stakes winner Thunderous stands out as another familiar name
Lot 134
B c Dubawi - Frida La Blonde (Elusive City) Haras d’Etreham
This colt’s sister sold to Oliver St Lawrence for a cool €2.4 million at last year’s sale and it is not hard to imagine him commanding a similar price. He is a half-brother to two Group 1 winners in Wooded and Bucanero Fuerte, both by Wootton Bassett. The former is
off the mark with his first runners at Haras de Bouquetot this year, while the latter missed his Commonwealth Cup assignment due to travel sickness but can hopefully add further lustre to the page later this season.
The trio’s Dubawi full- or half-sister, now named Battle Rhythm, is in training with William Haggas for Victorious Racing.
Lot 144
Gr c Dubawi - Golden Valentine (Dalakhani)
Ecurie des Monceaux
Another yearling by Darley’s phenomenal sire who is expected to raise the roof at Arqana The appeal with Monceaux’s grey is very apparent as he is a brother to
last season’s Futurity Trophy and Autumn Stakes winner Ancient Wisdom Godolphin’s colt was snapped up by Sheikh Mohammed’s operation at the Deauville sale two years ago, fetching €2m, and a seven-figure sum for his younger brother would not be out of the question.
The duo are out of the Group-winning Dalakhani mare Golden Valentine and it is a family replete with star quality as further down the page is the outstanding champion Goldikova.
Another famous name is Prix Vermeille winner Galikova, while also part of the clan are Group winners and top-level performers Terrakova and Anodin.
Lot 156
Gr c Kingman - Hidden Breeze (Dark Angel) Haras d’Etreham
A colt by the sire of this year’s 1,000 Guineas and Prix de Diane winners and out of a mare by another super stallion whose broodmare sire record includes Havana Grey, Content and Bedtime Story, he’s one not to miss.
Haras d’Etreham’s colt is the first foal out of Hidden Breeze, a winning sister or half-sister to two black-type winners in Lily’s Angel and Zurigha, as well as a half-sibling to the Japanese Group 1-placed Labeling.
The grey hails from the exceptional George Strawbridge family of In Clover, a daughter of this colt’s third dam Bellarida and the dam of Group 1 winners
Stakes form of lots’ siblings (Arqana Deauville August V2 Sale – up to August 4)
Call The Wind, With You and We Are. She is also the dam of stakes winner Incahoots, the dam of 2023 Prix de la Foret scorer Kelina, and this year’s Pretty Polly Stakes winner Friendly Soul.
Lot 178
B f St Mark’s BasilicaKnyazhna (Montjeu) Ecurie des Monceaux
Hailing from the first crop of Coolmore’s Dewhurst Stakes winner and world champion three-year-old, this filly rates an exciting prospect as a close relation or half-sister to three black-type performers.
Out of the unraced Montjeu mare Knyazhna – a daughter of a sister to St Leger hero and Derby second Rule Of Law –the January-born yearling is a close relation to Sacred Life, a Grade 3 winner and top level-placed performer in the United States, and a half-sister to Feed The Flame, last year’s Grand Prix de Paris winner who has placed in more Group 1s this season.
Under second dam Katyusha is Migwar, second in the Prix du Conseil de Paris, while Rule Of Law features under the third dam, the stakes-winning Crystal Crossing, as does US Grade 2 scorer Honor Marie and another Pattern winner in Chartwell Fillies’ Stakes victress Tomyris.
Lot 188
B c Wootton Bassett - Lady Dahlia (Australia)

INRURAL Normandy the immaculately preserved12th century Norman keep at Chambois is an unmissable landmarkonthe road outofTrun.
Butcontinue down the road for another twomilesand you will find an altogether more modern monument, the thoroughbred breeding stronghold that is Harasdu Cadran.
Pierre Talvardstartedhere with tenboxes and 16 hectares of land “justafter Mitterrand was president” and has gradually built up to be one of the mostimportantoperations in France, one which now affords him regularaccessto the winner’s enclosureondays when it counts most.
Thecentral partofthe main housedates from 1760 and, sittingacrossfromhis son Emmanuel and daughter-inlawAngelique,Talvardpuffs on atrademark cigarand recites the storyofhow he built Cadran from nothing.
“Quite quickly it became an obsession to grow the farm and to improvethe quality of the broodmare band,”says Talvard, who nowhas 300 boxesand 400hectaresinhis care.
“I knew Icould never have a ‘Classic’breedingoperation on the level of the AgaKhanor the Wertheimer brothers. ButI wanted to be able to pointto havingbredatleast one Group-race winner ayear, which is the place we have got to,savefor the fact that this year we have gottwo
“Wehavegeared everything towardsthat aim and we are obliged to have aset-up on this scale because Iinsistthat everyhorse hastheir ownbox duringthe winter. That is imperativetome. Step by step we have grownbut nowwe have reachedthe limit of that and we canfocus on buyinga few moremares.”

rarely absent and the mention of his twocurrent champions is timely, given that Daylight will attempt to puther name on the Cadran Group1roll of honour in this Sunday’s SumbePrixMorny, sixweeks after Puchkine landed the Prix Jean Prat on the same Deauville dragstrip.
“Ithelps me to forgetthe pressure of the sales for a while, because thereismore pressure around havinga runner in the Mornythanthe August Sale,” says Talvard, only half-joking.
“Honestly, she wasalwaysa nice filly butnot spectacular Shewas never my horseofthe year. She wasserious and had no faults. Now she hasbecome spectacular. And the greatest pleasureisalwaystobeatthe English or the Irish.”
Talvardadds: “Itwas differentwith Puchkine because Iloved him as a yearlingand Ipushed Jean-Claude Rougetinto puttinghim into training. Whenhecame to see the horses he said of him,‘He’s average, he’s mediocre.’Ikept sendinghim photos urging him to takethe colt and finally he agreed
“His career hasbeenvery skillfullydeveloped and I thoughthewas brilliantinthe Jean Prat. Formehehad alreadyshown that brilliance at twoina wayyou rarely see at Bordeaux.Hewas certainly ayearling Inoticedalot morethanDaylight.”
Puchkine wasborn and raised at Cadran for his owner Alain Jathiere, a clientfor adozen years and aman who wasenjoyinghis firstGroup 1success on the Flat afterfourdecades in harnesswith Rouget, while Jean-Claude Seroul is
another majorFrenchowner to have entrustedTalvardwith his broodmares.
‘AllezDaylight’
Emmanuel Talvardserveda longapprenticeshipathome beforespreadinghis wingsto see howthings aredone elsewhere, returningamatter ofdaysbeforePuchkine’s Jean Prat success.
Remarkably, hewas in charge at HarasdeBeaufay when Rashabar –the winner of the Coventry andone of Daylight’s chief rivals in the Morny– wasbred.
“AllezDaylight!”says Emmanuel when challenged by hisfather to declarehis interest. “I’m asupporter of Cadran. It’s like Iplayedfor ParisSaint-Germain before and nowI’vetransferredto Olympique Marseille.
“SoAllezDaylight, tho I’dobviouslybeveryhap if theother one finishes second.”
He continues: “Nothingwas really pre-ordainedand I worked for him [Pierre]for 15 years. Butinorder to grow you need to go andsee other things and have other experiences “I enjoyedhavingthe responsibility and know
that someone elsetrusted me with decision-making. Iloved it.But the logical conclusion wastocome home to aplace with greatfacilities and agreat broodmare band.
“It’sexcitingand theproof is that Icame backatthe beginning of July andonthe 7th Puchkine wona Group1 and then on the 28th Daylight wonthe Cabourg. That’s the proofthat Cadran hasabig future. Youwanttobe somewherethat has‘game’ and cancompete.”
He adds:“We’requite differentbut we discuss things –beinnodoubt he’s difficult! –and obviouslyIhavetogo carefully to begin with. But he’s receptivetomyideas and we getalong very well.Plus he’s mellowed with age. When
Iwas herebeforeitwas much harder!
“I’vebroughta few external clients with me and thereisa fabulous team here. Youcan’t have 400 hectares,100 mares and yearlings on topwithout the personneltobackitup, who followthe ‘bigboss’”.
‘I don’t reallyenjoy theyearlingsales’
IfPierreTalvardhas mellowed, he certainly hasn’t changed his opinions radically on which parts of beingabreeder really thrill him.Watch him amongfriends on the racecourseorbattling in the ring to securea new member of the broodmare band, and you will witness Talvardinhis element.
“I don’t really enjoythe yearlingsales,” he says with no hintofsarcasm.“Ilovegoing racingand Iwould rather sell ahorsefor €10,000 and wina Grouprace than have a sale-topper that goes on to winnothing. If Isold an expensivehorsethat turnedout not to be anygood,Iwould almostfeelshame
“Butsellingahorse for €10,000 that turns outtobegood, that brings me greatpleasure.
Thesales areanecessary partofitall and importantto
my bank manager. Ihavetobe thereofcourse, just to find out if I’mstillsolvent or not.”
Talvardhas developed a very happyknack when it comes to beingonthe other side ofadeal, and hasbought some maresthat have helped change the farm’sfortunes
“The breedingstock sales come just beforeChristmas and eachyear Itell myself I will buyone or two, perhaps three presents,” says Talvard. “Itgets quite onerouson occasions!
“But it gives me enormous pleasuretowalk through the paddocksand thinkthat is a really nice mare, andnot just the sister of agood mare.I have associates in many of the horsesand Ilovetobuy at least one expensivemarea year, evenifcurrently most of oursuccess is with more cheaply boughtstock
“For instance,Ibought Latita, the dam of Daylight, for €20,000, which you could call asuccessful purchase.”
That ambition when it comes to buyingmares looks settotakeonanevengreater dimension, with Talvardopen abouthis intention to invest heavilyagain at the end of the year, with aknock-on effect on howlarge his future yearling drafts will be.
“I have alreadyalerted Arqana to my need for30slots innextyear’sAugust sale, against20this year,” he says “All the good maresthat I have boughtrecently have beautiful-lookingfoals Notably, Ibought QueenTrezy in partnership with Ballylinch Stud, Jean-Pierre Dubois and another partner,Ecurie Melanie, who hasabeautiful Lope De Vega foal.
“I have a wonderful Wootton
Bassettfoal outofFlighty Lady, who wasthirdinthe Prix Marcel Boussac. AndIhavea Siyouni foal who is completely outofthe ordinary.
“I boughtall of thosemares for very good money–between €600,000 and €800,000 –and Iamproud totaketheir progenyto market.”
‘Qemah changed everything’
Cadran hascertainly moved onto adifferentplane in the lastdecade,asTalvard constantly soughttoimprove the broodmare band. And he hasnohesitation in nominatingthe horse that changed the natureand scale of his ambitions
“Qemah (right) wasareal catalystfor the farmbecause her greatvictories allowed me to sell her dam Kartica toMonsieur [Katsumi] Yoshida, who remainsaloyal clientand keeps ten or so mareshere,”saysTalvard. “She gave me thedesiretogoout and buymoreand better mares.
“When IboughtKartica, [her trainer] Philippe Demercastel told me that if she hadbeen sounder in her fetlocks, she would have wonaGroup 1. I alreadythoughtshe had
achieved plenty and the funny thingwas that immediatelyI thoughtofgoingtoDanehill Dancer
“I don’t knowwhy butthat idea came to me rightoff the bat; Iboughta coverfor Danehill Dancer at the sale, eventhou wasold and ha variable fertilit by that stage of his career Isenttwo maresto him and both came backinfoal. So the sale of Karticareally w an important moment.”
Talvardmight liketotell unwary journalists hismating

“I hate breedingand Pointhas the jadvantage that he hasnoNorthernDancer blood in him,”says Talvard. “Hewas averytough

“Hebringsacertain precocity, which afair few of ourmares lackalittle, and so I used himalot from the start. Lastyear we hadayearlingby him who unfortunately had kneeproblems and this year we have three fillies, aswell as acolt at another farm. We have three foals on theground by Blue Pointand we went back to him again this year
“Heisnow on his wayto achievingthat level [£150,000£200,000] so it’s greattoget inearly, butwe’ll carryon usinghim even though he’ll become moreand more expensive. Forme, he is an extraordinarystallion by dint of the number of winners he’s had.
“He’shad some very good horses butitisthe numbers that arereallystriking andyou getthe impression nearly everythingwill be arunner, whichisfar from the case with everystallion.
“Wewill visit him abit less inthe futureifhebecomes really expensive, butwe continuedtogotoSiyouni, to WoottonBassett,toNight Of Thunder and Lope De Vega; he’s an extraordinarysireand we have three maresinfoal to him.”

JENNY NORRIS ON THE SUCCESS OF GOFFS UK GRADUATE JASOUR

CONSIGNORS alwaysfeelasense of achievementin tradinggood horses, and rightly so,but JennyNorrishas derived even more pleasure from the high-classsprinter Jasour, whom she sold at the Goffs UK Premier YearlingSale for£85,000 twoyears ago.

Jasour arrivedwith Norrisat her Redenham Park Stud in Hampshireasafoal and was presentedatDoncasterinthe following year, justashis sire wastakingthe industryby stormwith his firstcropof two-year-olds.
He wasboughtbyCliveCox for Al MohamediyaRacing, and wonthe July Stakes at Newmarketlastyearand the Commonwealth CupTrial at Ascot this season, before finishingaclosethirdto Inisherin in the bigrace itself at the royalmeeting.
Norrisdescribes her relationship with the talented grey, which is closer than usual between aconsignor and graduate,as“an interesting story”
“I took ashare in thefoal, alongwith the breeder, and said to my staff herethat I’d split whatever he made with them, sohewas apool horse effectively,”she explains
“Then Havana Grey took off and the horsehimself did well between his foal and yearling

“Heduly went andmade £85,000 at Doncaster, which we weren’t expectinginour wildestdreams, although he waswell liked on the grounds, to be fair.Everyone was thrilled. Good staff arevery hard to find and I’mlucky I’ve gota greatgroup of girls with me here, so it’s only fair to reward them.”
Sheadds: “It’sbeenfun following himinhis racing career.Wheneverheruns we make sure there’ssomeone from the studtheretocheer him on. We allwenttoRoyal Ascot to watch himrun, and it wasgreat to see him come thirdinaGroup 1.
“Itwas an amazingday when we sold him,and forhim to backthat up by beingsuch a good horsehas been phenomenal. He wasn’t all that bigasayearling, andafew people knockedhim for that, butthen Havana Grey isn’t that bigeither, although, aswe knownow, heiswellableto getgood-sized horses.”

Since Annelie took over managementofthe yearling prep six yearsago, ithas sold severalhorseswho have wonfor British and Irish connections and beentradedonfor profit –perhapslastmonth’s promising Beverley two-year-old novice stakeswinner Lazy Griff will be the next– and thisseason its draft to the BBAG YearlingSale hasbeenboostedbyGeorg von Opel’shomebredsfor the first time “Wesold twocolts who
made connections anice profit at the BBAG YearlingSale of 2021,”saysIrish National Stud breeding managementcourse graduate Annelie Rodde, who gained valuable work experience with Malcolm Bastardand hasworkedfor a wide rangeofBritish and Irish farms as well as Brighthill Farm in NewZealand.
“Lordship, ason of Lord Of England relatedtoLomitas, was purchased by Jeremy Brummitt for €38,000 and wastrained by Wiliam Haggas to winfourraces includingtwo bighandicaps. He wasresold for 160,000gns at last year’s Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale, torace in Australia
“Campaign Trail wasalso sold for €38,000, to Alex Elliott, and wastrainedbyRalph Beckett to winthree races in
2023. He wassoldatthe same Tattersalls Autumn Horses in TrainingSale,toEdBaileyand Peter Kerr for 200,000gns
“Itgoestoshowthat sharper horsesmight be more fashionable, but theywin at twoand maybeonce or twice at three andthat’s it,you can’t sell them on as well. Butwith German horses youcan win moreracesatthree andthen sell them on for alot of money to Australiaand other nations.”
Lazy Griff, the firstwinner from GestutWesterberg’sdraft at the 2023 BBAG Yearling Sale, isalsorapidly rising in value.Signedfor by Brummitt at €75,000 and trainedby CharlieJohnston for Middleham Park Racing, the sonofProtectionistfinished second to subsequentVintage Stakes runner-up Wolf Of
Badenoch on his debutat Doncaster and, after running down the field in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot, broke his maiden in smartfashion at Beverley in recentweeks
“LazyGriff hadgood size and scopeasayearling, and wasa lovely moverand very well balanced,”saysRodde “Some people don’t like buyinghorses who aresobig and strong, as they think they won’t go on,but it showsthey have talenttoo
“He’sout of aDanish-bred daughter of Rock Of Gibraltar calledLinarda, who was ownedbySwiss clients of the farm. Shewas agreat racemare for them, winningthe Swiss 1,000 Guineas. That mightnot be as good as the German 1,000 Guineas, whichitself
clearly isn’t as good as the English and Irish 1,000 Guineas, butitstill made her a decentblack-type filly.
“WeboughtLinarda from them to breed from her,and she’s beenreally lucky for us, alsoproducingthe Group3 winner Lambo, although we struggledtosellhim and eventually made aprivatedeal at €5,000 for him.”
Antara, adaughter of Platini bred by GestutWesterberg clientThomasGehrig, was another talentedperformer who struggledtofind favouras ayearling at BBAG.She went unsold at just €14,000 butwon aGroup 3atHoppegarten by eightlengths at three beforea privatesaletoGodolphin, for whom she wonthe Princess Elizabeth Stakes twice and finisheda head second to
Stacelita in the Prix Jean Romanet
“She was a very interesting filly, as she turned out to be a brilliant racemare and has produced the Group 3 winner Algiers and this year’s Royal Ascot winner Wild Tiger,” says Rodde “Aff Un Zo, who is out of Antara’s half-sister Andarta, was sold as a yearling for €13,000 and has become a bit of a star in Germany.
“He finished fifth in the German Derby and won two Group 3s including the German St Leger at three, as well as the Group 2 OleanderRennen last year.”
Boccassini, a daughter of Artan who took the scalps of Beauty Is Truth and Magic America in the Prix Robert Papin, was another potential bargain at the BBAG Yearling Sale, having been knocked down for just €6,000.
However, Gestut Westerberg received due reward when a son of Teofilo and Boccassini topped the fixture in 2011, bought by John Ferguson for Godolphin for €220,000. Broughton, as he was named, won three races for Godolphin, including a valuable handicap at Glorious Goodwood, before evolving into a useful jumper, taking the Scottish Triumph Hurdle Trial and Grande Steeple Chase di Milano
“He won 14 races over Flat and jumps,” says Rodde “He’s the perfect example of the class and durability of German-bred horses.”
The stud could conceivably top the sale again this year with one of the three lots by Wootton Bassett being consigned on behalf of Georg von Opel, who races under the Westerberg banner and has adopted the stud’s maroon and royal blue silks
All have impressive pages: a colt who is the first foal out of
Preis der Diana heroine Miss Yoda, herself a daughter of Sea The Stars and German champion two-year-old filly Monami (Lot 192); a filly who is the first foal out of Deia, a Listed-winning and Group 2-placed Soldier Hollow full-sister to champion Dschingis Secret and Deutsches Derby runner-up Destino (66); and another filly who is out of a Galileo halfsister to Royal Lodge Stakes scorer Foundation (180).
“The colt out of Miss Yoda is particularly special as the dam was the first racehorse bought by Georg, and she was pretrained by Malcolm Bastard while I was there,” says Rodde. “She gave the family many happy memories when coming back to Germany to win the Oaks, and so I’m delighted to be selling her first yearling.
“He’s a big horse with plenty of size, scope and balance, and he’s an unbelievable mover. He’s also a very honest and gentle horse to deal with The pedigree backs it up, so what more can I say? He’s the full package, and very exciting.”
AS FOR the other lots sold on behalf of Georg von Opel, she adds: “The filly out of Deia is very interesting, as her dam was bought for a lot of money and rightly so, as she’s a full-sister to two stallions, including our own Destino
“I’m absolutely in love with the filly out of Fallen Lady. She’s a queen, an absolute ‘black beauty’ type of horse; just the most wonderful mover.”
Describing how Georg von Opel’s racing operation interacts with Gestut Westerberg, Rodde explains:
“My parents have been running the stud for 26 years, but he discovered his interest in racing only five years ago, starting with Miss Yoda and then becoming heavily involved with Coolmore.
“When he first started he asked my parents if it would be okay to use our name and our colours, as he would like to
honour the family’s history of breeding and racing, and they said it was a great idea
“His idea is to race fillies and keep the good ones for his own broodmare band, like the great owner-breeders always have.”
The Gestut Westerberg draft at the BBAG Yearling Sale isn’t all about Georg von Opel’s trio of lots by Wootton Bassett.
Rodde describes it as “full of Westerberg power” as it also contains five youngsters bred by her parents and three pinhooked by herself, along with four being sold on behalf of farm clients
Among the Rodde family’s homebreds, the filly by promising second-season sire Study Of Man – 9.1 per cent stakes winners to runners in Europe at the time of writing –out of Dyveke, a Lando full-sister to Group 1 winner Donaldson, making her a halfsister to German champion two-year-old filly Diamond Dove (69), catches the eye.
“She’s a typical Study Of Man: a classy, elegant filly and very straightforward,” says Rodde “The dam has done very well, producing five winners, and Diamond Dove was an excellent filly, also finishing second in the Preis der Diana at three.”
The consignment also includes three lots by home stallion Destino, a son of multiple champion German sire Soldier Hollow who went down by only a neck in the German Derby. They are a half-brother to Group 2 winner Itobo out of a winning Lomitas half-sister to Preis der Diana victress Iota, who found further fame as the dam of In
Swoop (19); a three-parts brother to champion threeyear-old Wai Key Star (96); and a three-parts sister to champion two-year-old filly Well Spoken (205).
“Destino’s oldest crop are three-year-olds and he hasn’t had a winner yet, but he’s had a few runners-up and we’re hoping he’ll break his duck before the sale,” says Rodde “He covered only 20 mares in his first season, too. It’s so difficult for nearly all German stallions because they receive such small books.
“It’s a real shame because good stallions aren’t given a chance We saw that with Adlerflug, who also started with small crops Nobody believed he would be as good as he turned out to be, and by the time they realised it was too late
“We’ve always stood behind Destino and still believe in him, though You can see that from the pages of those wellbred yearlings by him in the BBAG catalogue.”
Rodde’s pinhooks are an Australia filly out of a Champs Elysees half-sister to Rose Bonheur, the Listed-winning dam of high-class stayer Nayef Road (151); a Zelzal filly out of champion older filly Ajaxana, a daughter of Rock Of Gibraltar who has already produced three winners (166); and a Cracksman filly out of a winning Pivotal full-sister to Group 3 winner and multiple Group 1-placed Calyxa (172).
“All three were bought at the Goffs November Foal Sale and are bred to run over middle distances, and two of them are out of German mares,”
IT’S A REAL SHAME BECAUSE GOOD STALLIONS AREN’T GIVEN A CHANCE. WE SAW THAT WITH ADLERFLUG, WHO ALSO STARTED WITH SMALL CROPS
she says “They’re exactly what we need in Germany, and I think I was lucky to get them for good prices at a sale where everyone else was looking for speedier, more precocious horses.”
THE Gestut Westerberg draft shouldn’t be ignored by trainers or traders looking for a sharper type, mind you Among its members who might appeal to that sector of the market is a Mehmas colt out of a Danehill Dancer mare from the family of champion siblings Valirann and Valyra (190).
“He’s a bit of a bull, very strong and athletic,” reports Rodde. “German sales are known for those middledistance horses and stayers who win at three, and can be resold as horses in training for good money, and there’s definitely value for those, but there are speedier horses at BBAG who offer great value too Buyers will pay a lot less for them there than they would in Britain or Ireland.”
Summing up the strengths of German horses, highlighted on the international stage once again by the victory of Goliath in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes last month, she adds: “We breed robust, solid and healthy
horses They’re slower maturing and need a trip, so they’re not always deemed as being commercial in Britain and Ireland, where the emphasis is on speed on speed on speed
“But it’s a good thing to come to Germany and source some fresh, invigorating blood to send to mix with those speedy pedigrees There’s serious value to be had, too.”
Not everything in the garden is rosy, though, with the German foal crop declining by alarming levels year on year Is Rodde, only 24 and hoping to take over the reins of Gestüt Westerberg in future, worried?
“Definitely a little,” she admits “It feels like there are fewer and fewer people getting involved in breeding and racing in Germany. Prizemoney isn’t great and the whole process of breeding a horse costs a lot of money, so it puts people off
“But the recent rise of new syndicates has given cause for hope Liberty Racing, the biggest one in German racing, has won the German Derby two years in a row now, which is unbelievable It spent a million euros at the BBAG Yearling Sale last year, which was a great help for everyone
“Last winter I pre-trained a few horses for a new group called Turf Syndicate BadenBaden, which comprises 20 ple from the city. They’ve three nice horses. the future, and we ally need to try to get more people involved that way.”
Fingers crossed those syndicates help secure the future of the sport in Germany, and in turn ensure the continued success of Gestut Westerberg.
