WORLD’S BEST RACEHORSE RANKINGS ANALYSIS Paul Curtis
H
E LEFT it late but Cracksman’s dominant display to land a second Qipco Champion Stakes on his final start at Ascot last October sees him rightfully retain his position as the leading horse in Europe in the 2018 Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings. Rated joint-top overall with Australian win machine Winx, his official mark of 130 matches that afforded him after his three-year-old season and is similarly reflected in a peak Racing Post Rating of 131 for each campaign. While last year’s Champion Stakes success lacked the depth of his 2017 romp, his six-length slamming of King George runner-up Crystal Ocean in first-time blinkers nonetheless showed he retained the ability of his Classic campaign. He joins a select group, headed by the great Frankel, to have held top spot in successive years and his Ascot performance was the best in the world last year on RPRs. A week later wondermare Winx extended her winning sequence to 29 when winning a historic fourth Cox Plate, but not for the first time last year the competition was not exacting and she started no bigger than 1-4 for each of last year’s seven Group 1 victories. Indeed, she’s started no bigger than that price since March 2017. As such, it was hard to afford a big figure to Winx on last year’s form, and the official handicappers have been kind in rating her 130, down 2lb from the previous two years. Officially rated at least the joint-best turf horse in the world for the past three years, ironically despite that 2lb drop this is the first year that she sits atop the overall standings, with no dirt stars such as Arrogate and California Chrome to contend with. While a peak RPR of 126 for last year falls 4lb below her very best figures, it would be hard to say for certain that her powers were on the wane. In similar vein Enable’s mark has taken a hit despite winning all three starts in a delayed 2018 campaign. Her new official mark of 125 is down 3lb from her three-year-old level, which is mirrored by RPRs of 129 for 2017 and 126 for 2018. Certainly last year’s Arc was not at the same level as her 2017 success but, as with Winx,
EDWARD WHITAKER (RACINGPOST.COM/PHOTOS)
Cracksman produces the signature performance of 2018 with his six-length victory in the Champion Stakes at Ascot
Alpha Centauri still gains recognition as an outstanding threeyear-old filly at a mile and the best performer at the distance in Europe last year with her 124. Also rated 124 on RPRs, she could have been considered a match for Roaring Lion with her fillies’ allowance, though whether the three-year-old champion would have proved as effective over a mile is debatable.
T Cracksman joins select band with shared honours it’s hard to say for sure she doesn’t retain all her ability. There are also positives aside from the figures to be drawn from her Breeders’ Cup Turf triumph, as despite an RPR of 122 showing the form to be not outstanding she succeeded in following up her Arc success in the US where seven before her had tried and failed. There is a case for thinking that her three-year-old figure was slightly inflated by weight for age, but any advantage has been diminished in recent years and she could yet return to that 2017 level. In a notable year for John Gosden, the champion trainer was also responsible for last year’s leading three-year-old Roaring Lion, whose official mark of 127 sees him ranked the best of his generation in the world.
That a mark of 127 can head the Classic crop illustrates that the standard among last year’s three-yearolds was disappointing, not just in Europe but worldwide, with US Triple Crown winner Justify registering only 125. The pair also head the RPR lists for last year’s three-year-olds on the same marks, though at least Roaring Lion did prove himself against older horses and also displayed versatility in dropping back to a mile to win a substandard Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Roaring Lion gets his figure from the Juddmonte International Stakes, where he thwarted Poet’s Word’s bid for a Group 1 hat-trick with clearly his best performance, though the King George winner was not at his best at York. In a World’s Best Racehorse
Rankings with few discrepancies with RPRs, putting Roaring Lion ahead of Poet’s Word looks questionable. Yes, he beat Poet’s Word well at York, but the latter’s earlier Royal Ascot defeat of Cracksman, the pair eight lengths clear of the third, rates stronger form. The official handicappers took that view themselves in midsummer with Poet’s Word initially upgraded to an inflated 130 after adding the King George to his name. The Ascot midsummer showpiece was never worth that lofty figure, but the subsequent 4lb drop to 126 for one below-par effort at York looks to overcompensate and Poet’s Word has the edge over Roaring Lion on RPRs by 1lb with a rating of 128. Although just edged out of the top ten worldwide in the 2018 WBRR,
HE sex allowance would also give her claims on official figures against Beauty Generation but that surely does the star Hong Kong miler a disservice. An RPR of 129 rates a more positive assessment of his exploits since the autumn and rates him the best miler in the world, regardless of allowances. Domestically Battaash deservedly gets the nod as leading sprinter with an official mark of 123, 1lb ahead of Harry Angel and reversing placings from the 2017 rankings. Both sit just behind Breeders’ Cup winner Roy H in the official lists, though. Although they never met, there was clearly little between the top British sprint duo, and after sharing RPR honours on 128 as three-year-olds Battaash edged it last year with 129 against 127 for Harry Angel, whose season proved disappointing after an impressive return at York last May. Roy H rates joint-top sprinter on RPRs with Battaash on 129. That the sprint figures appear at odds with the official marks is in line with recent publications of the WBRR, with sprint figures seeming depressed across the board. That Harry Angel couldn’t go on from his winning Duke of York Stakes return serves to underline that earlyseason form might not read so well by the season’s end, particularly with three-year-olds. Both Guineas winners found others improving past them through the year, with Roaring Lion gaining revenge on Saxon Warrior in the Eclipse and shock winner Billesdon Brook failing to confirm form with the next three home from the 1,000 Guineas. Official figures of 121 and 115 for the Guineas winners (against RPRs of 122 and 115) stack up pretty well against recent winners considering the standard of last year’s Classic crop. Similarly, Masar’s official mark of 121 (RPR 122+) sits at the bottom end of expectations for the Derby winner, but while the bare Derby form may be wanting Masar will hopefully have the chance to build on that this year.
Britain’s strength is simply not reflected in this Oz-fest Sam Walker assesses the 2018 world rankings – and finds much to disagree with THE World Rankings committee went big on Australia this year. They did the same with Japan in 2014, when two horses you’ve never heard of (Just A Way and Epiphaneia) topped the list. Now it’s Australia’s turn in the sun. The headlines from Oz-fest 2018 are that eight-year-old Winx has been ranked as world champion alongside Cracksman, four Australian races
have been named in the world’s top ten and there’s an unbelievable 31 Australian races in the world’s top 100. I could just put a crying smiley emoji here but there is more to say on the curious case of the World Rankings committee and the wild deviation from reality, part two. It was actually Britain, not Australia, that had a superb 2018. Barely a week went by without a British trainer winning something on the world stage. The biggest show of strength came at Longchamp on Arc day, when they landed five of the six Group 1s on the card. A month later British trainers had
won both Grade 1s at the Canadian International meeting, a Caulfield Cup, a hat-trick of Breeders’ Cup victories and then Cross Counter sealed a historic win in the Melbourne Cup. By the end of the year British trainers had won 37 overseas Group/ Grade 1s, dwarfing the achievement of the next best, Ireland (16). In short, there was a mountain of international form lines in 2018 and British racing was right at the top of it. Australia, the darlings of the rankings committee, had just one winner and a third (both in New Zealand) from 14 Group 1 runners across Britain, Dubai, Hong Kong and
New Zealand in 2018. Their record of home defence was equally weak. Australia welcomed 18 British runners across nine Group 1 races and the Brits won four and had six in the places. It’s very un-British to trumpet our own but the superior bloodstock and horsemanship on these shores was overwhelming last year, with a dozen different trainers sending horses to win Group 1 races overseas – and this strength is simply not reflected in the World Rankings. Britain had just 19 races in the world’s top 100 compared to Australia’s 31. The Racing Post closely monitors thousands of cross-border runners
every year to ensure our ratings (RPRs) are reflective of the relative abilities of horses from different nations, and Cracksman sits 5lb clear of Winx (131 to 126) judged on their best RPRs of 2018. It’s not politics, just facts, based on thousands of lines of form and analysis. If it was an emotional decision you could argue Winx deserves a world title on the back of her sterling career, but to do that you would have to ratchet up a number of races to unrealistically high levels, which would in turn cause Australian races to feature heavily in the list of top ten and top 100 races. Hang on a minute . . .

WORLD’S BEST RACEHORSE RANKINGS Simon Turner says class of 2018 are the most exciting juveniles since Frankel’s year
T
HERE was never any doubt Too Darn Hot would be crowned last year’s champion two-yearold. The European Thoroughbred Rankings committee have certainly been bold in their assessment of the unbeaten son of Dubawi, rating him the joint-best twoyear-old of the past 20 years on a mark of 126. Since 1997 champion Xaar (127), just four horses have earned such a rating – Dream Ahead, Frankel, Johannesburg and New Approach. This year’s rankings feature an excellent champion but slightly below-average depth – just 44 juveniles have been awarded ratings of 110 or more, nearly ten per cent below the ten-year average and the second-lowest such number in the past 20 years. It’s the fifth straight year there has been a marginal reduction in the number of two-year-olds in the rankings and the second-lowest tally of 110+ horses in 20 years. That said, in terms of potential, the class of 2018 are perhaps the most exciting crop since 2010, when a certain Frankel shared top billing with Dream Ahead. Too Darn Hot sits 5lb clear at the head of the rankings, thanks in the main to his impressive Dewhurst success. John Gosden’s colt lined up even-money at Newmarket following fine wins in the Solario and Champagne Stakes and didn’t let his growing band of admirers down. An ultimately comfortable defeat of Group 1 winner Advertise (119) and Group 2 winner Anthony Van Dyck
HOT STUFF (118) is a very solid line of form however viewed. There is little doubt the latest star foal of Dar Re Mi is worthy of his lofty rating. His mark of 126 means, in terms of racecourse achievement, Too Darn Hot is the best two-year-old John Gosden has ever trained, his rating being 3lb higher than his trainer’s previous champion, Oasis Dream (123). As in recent years, the accuracy of this year’s rankings are hard to fault. In fact 96 per cent of the figures differ by less than a length from their Racing Post Ratings, which rather tells its own story. Quorto (121) sits second in ppleby s the rankings. Charlie Appleby’s colt is unbeaten after three hony starts and also had Anth Van Dyck behind when an earning his mark with a ational impressive win in the Na Stakes. Seemingly sure to stayy beyond a mile, Quorto iss a he very exciting colt and th best two-year-old the resurgent Godolphin operation have enjoyed since 2012 champion Dawn Approach. The fact Quorto is a homebred son of their flagship sire Dubawi will doubtless make his success all the sweeter for Godolphin. The top three juveniles head into theirr n, Classic season unbeaten
with Ten Sovereigns (120) sitting third. A ridiculously impressive maiden win was quickly followed by a Group 3 success before Aidan O’Brien’s colt completed his 35-day hat-trick in the Middle Park. Ten Sovereigns was comfortably on top of the previously unbeaten Jash (118) on the Rowley Mile. With a couple of reliable markers in behind, his Newmarket form has a solid feel and he’s clearly open to significant improvement. The son of No Nay Never is a tremendously exciting prospect for Aidan O’Brien, who once again dominates the rankings numerically, being
responsible for no fewer than 16 of the 44 110+ horses, a marginal increase percentagewise on his excellent returns of the past two years.
I
F THE point about highclass potential wasn’t already evident, we now come to Calyx (115), who appeared to have the world at his feet after his impressive success in a particularly solid renewal of the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. Runner-up Advertise (119) was the first home on the opposite side of the track at the royal meeting and hardly let the form down later in the year. Back in June you’d have got fairly generous odds about Martyn Meade’s colt ending the season th he higher-rated horse, but b injury prevented Callyx running again last year and Advertise proved himself a collt of high talent with his h Phoenix Stakes win n and Dewhurst second. Calyx was hugely impressive in the Coventryy, tanking to the front of his group before running right

away just ten days after his winning debut. The son of Kingman finished more than six lengths clear of the other ten to race on the stands’ side at Ascot and looked nailed on to rate significantly higher before injury struck. He is yet another highpotential, unbeaten three-yearold to look forward to this year and the fact his master trainer seems confident that he will return fit and well for 2019 is a tantalising prospect.
The champion juvenile filly of 2018 has been awarded to Prix Morny winner Pretty Pollyanna (116), another decision that is hard to quibble with. Both her Deauville success and wide-margin win in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes warranted something like her final ranking. However, the facts are that Michael Bell’s filly was unable to quite replicate that form later in the season and is yet to prove her stamina for a mile. The standard of last year’s fillies was far from outstanding and, with many still having their stamina to prove, the way is open for one or more less exposed sorts to come through and make an impression at the top level this year. We have a contrasting situation with the colts, with one of the highest-rated twoyear-olds of the past 20 years coming into 2019 unbeaten, underpinned by two other unbeaten 120+ horses who would have rated champion juvenile themselves in three of the last ten years. It’s hard to remember a year when so many high-achieving three-year-olds have started the season unbeaten, and the immediate supporting cast also has some solid members. At the very least 2019 promises to give us a golden generation of three-year-old milers, which should start with one of the strongest renewals of the 2,000 Guineas in recent times. The fact Too Darn Hot boasts a level of form that would have won ten of the last 12 renewals and is proven on the Rowley Mile puts him firmly in pole position for what should be a race to savour.
