“None of us had unlimited funds and eventually Billy threw his hands in the air and said – you win.’’ Williams says he is pleased to see subsequent Ipswich committees and control bodies keep the Vince Curry as the world’s number one maiden race. “Dapto still has their big maiden and it’s worth $25,000 to the winner nowadays. Wentworth Park introduced their Mega Maiden a few years ago and that’s also $25,000 to the winner. But Ipswich and Queensland remain way out in front,’’ he declared. • Paul Dolan rates the top Vince Curry Memorial winners – Pages 4-5

Not only is the event the richest maiden for greyhounds in Australia, with a winner’s purse of $40,000, inquiries to the USA, England and Ireland reveal no maiden series worth that amount of money. So it’s safe to say the Vince Curry is the richest race of its type in the world. Vince Curry was one of the finest sports broadcasters this country has ever seen. When the Ipswich G.R.C. was in its infancy in the early 1980s, Vince assisted by arranging for radio 4BC to provide coverage of the new club’s Saturday night racing. Broadcasting greyhound racing was a new venture for the radio station. Vince died in November 1982, aged 54 years, after a long battle with cancer. The Ipswich G.R.C. committee, under inaugural president Ted Meehan, thought so highly of Vince that they created the new feature race. The first winner was Katie’s Lad for Peter Coleman. For several years through the 1990s, Ipswich club was engaged in something of a friendly battle with Dapto for the honour of staging Australia’s richest maiden. Chris Williams was the president of the

We rate the top Vince PAUL DOLAN The Vince Curry Memorial Maiden is a firmly established race on the Australian greyhound calendar. First run in 1985, and won that year by the Peter Coleman trained Katie’s Lad, there have been some outstanding winners. I think any fair and unbiased person would say there have been three Vince Curry winners who, due to what they did subsequently, stand ahead of the rest. That trio is Token Prince, Just the Best and High Earner. At the time of the Vince Curry, which was at the start of their careers, nobody could have predicted the great deeds that those three would eventually accomplish. I’ve got a list of ‘best eight’ Vince Curry winners, compiled more from memorable performances in that race rather than what the winners did subsequently. 1993 – EIRA GWYN: The bitch went into the ďŹ nal as a 33 to 1 outsider and landed the money from box three. Eira Gwyn was trained by Elaine Williamson. Why memorable? Eira Gwyn was raced by some of the staff of the Ipswich club, ofďŹ ce and canteen workers primarily. The cheering was deafening and the celebrations went on into the wee hours of the morning. “Eira Gwyn popped onto the fence from box three and luck fell her way,’’ Elaine’s husband Bevan recalls. And I’m glad I was there to see it happen and call the race. 1994 – CLASSY MARCY: This Gary Ralph trained bitch produced one of the most amazing runs I have ever seen, not only in a Vince Curry, but any feature race. Drawn box ďŹ ve, the daughter of Shining Chariot and National Queen was stone

Brook Lee – 2012

High Earner – 2009

cold last along the back stretch. She unleashed a sensational ďŹ nishing burst to get up and win, with the crowd shaking their heads in disbelief at what they had seen. First prize was $16,000. Classy Marcy indicated that night that she might be a stayer in the making and that’s what happened. She got to top level in distance races in Sydney. 1997 – TOKEN PRINCE: Mick Abbott brought this dog up from New South Wales and Token Prince went through the four nights of the series undefeated. There was drama when the dog appeared to ease close to the ďŹ nish in the semi ďŹ nal. He still won, but very narrowly. Stewards deliberated and deemed that the dog may have shied at the lights above the winning post and didn’t impose a failing to pursue penalty. Token

Willow Park GREYHOUNDS

Prince didn’t give us anything to worry about in the ďŹ nal the next week, winning by four lengths over another budding star, a bitch named Heart Spark. There was a gap of seven lengths back to the third placegetter Solo Sailor. Token Prince’s deeds at stud are legendary and we ďŹ rst heard about him at Ipswich. 1999 – JUST THE BEST: The royally bred son of Credibility and Flying Amy won the ďŹ nal by fourteen lengths, a margin which no winner, before or after, has put to the test. Paul Felgate’s excitement machine did that from box six and ran a race record of 29.76. The distance in those days was 512 metres, later increased to 520 metres. As a sire, Just the Best produced high class racers and stud dogs including Surf Lorian, Big Daddy Cool

and Elite State. And Queensland and Australian Hall of fame bitch Bogie Leigh. 2005 – VIZCAYA: It’s quite an achievement to go through the four rounds of the Vince Curry undefeated. The majority of winners were beaten somewhere along the line in the ďŹ rst three rounds. But not Vizcaya. The Sarah Pringle trained bitch not only won each of the four rounds, but was never headed in any of those races. Vizcaya was an odds on favourite for the ďŹ nal, romping home from box four by seven lengths. Her times through the series were 31.02, 30.85, 30.81 and the ďŹ nal in 30.82. How’s that for consistency? 2009 – HIGH EARNER: When this son of Collision and Double Guess was the fastest winner on night one in 30.47 in the non betting qualies, we

all knew that David and Christine Robartson had produced something special. But High Earner finished third in his quarter final then second in a semi final, striking trouble from boxes four and six. In the final ‘lady luck’ again deserted the dog with a box draw of five. But he pinged straight to the front, winning by eight lengths in race record time of 30.56. High Earner turned out to be one of the best named greyhounds ever, amassing $610,070 under the Robartson’s care and later with Kel Greenough in Victoria. It’s one of the great racing tragedies that High Earner died in May, 2012 of bowel complications at the young age of five years. That was after a sound start to a stud career which has seen many of his pups which raced racing age do extremely well.

2012 – BROOK LEE: This winner was memorable for a few reasons. She was the last winner to contest a Vince Curry series consisting of four rounds. And she was the first winner since Vizcaya in 2005 to win on each of the four nights. Bred and raced by Paul Felgate, Brook Lee was trained by then 23-year-old Christina Harman, the youngest trainer to ever win the race. And only the sixth female to win it, from to this point, 28 runnings. Brook Lee (Brett Lee – Miss Brook) was afforded no favours in the box draw, yet went through undefeated with times of 30.99, 30.90, 30.55 then 30.78 winning the final from box seven. 2014 – JUNGLE JUNCTION: Victoria’s Jason Thompson sent this bitch to his Queensland mate Reg Kay, specifically to be trained for the Vince

Curry. It was the first year that non betting qualies were dispensed with by the club. Jungle Junction won her heat from box four in 30.66, beating another subsequent star, Iva Vision. She drew box five in the semi final, finishing second to Clash of Kings, a dog later to win the Darwin Cup. In the final, you guessed it, another horror box draw, this time number four. But Jungle Junction exploded straight to the front and won by five lengths in race record time of 30.46. That was nearly two lengths quicker than High Earner’s previous record, set five years earlier. Times are almost everything in greyhound racing, so the race record breaker must rank right up there with the best. Jungle Junction is still racing with success in Victoria.

BREMER (Kinloch Brae – Great Gunns, trainer Greg Brennan, South Maclean): A six times winner in Victoria. Two Albion Park runs from boxes three and five for a win and a third. Some experienced trainers will tell you it takes six or more starts to ‘get the hang’ of Albion Park. Bremer can do but one thing – keep improving for each run there. Best career strike rate has been from box eight. GUNNADOO DELTA (Collision – Moonshine Shadow, trainer Nancy Maynard, Townsville): Rising through the low grades and doing particularly well from boxes seven and eight. That’s not to say he won’t handle traps one and two when the occasion arises. WINTON BURN (Spring Gun – Diamond Series, trainer Andrew Monaghan, Casino). Four Northern Rivers wins and four placings from nine starts. Recently stepped up to 520 metres with an unlucky second at Lismore. Tipping him to be an Albion Park Thursday winner sooner than later.

Watta Whisper won an amazing 48 races with a further 35 places. Boasts an incredible 80% strike rate in relation to win/place ratio He was crowned 2011 and 2012 NSW GBOTA Provincial Greyhound of the Year. Ran a track record Dapto 16.74 and still holds that honour to date His dam produced 226 race winners from only 3 litters which included 7 individual Wentworth Park winners. His impeccable pedigree boasts a double cross of Credibility.

Mensa Miss was a strong bitch who was a winner from 520m up to 600m including a city win over 600m at Albion Park. She’s a litter sister to group winner Dance A Jig as well as speedy city winners Spindle and Lacoste. Other winners in the litter include Mega Bucks Magic, Just A Tad & Zaza Bank. Mensa Miss is from a great damline and her dam, Tad Smarter (Albion Park greyhound of the year) has thrown quality dogs such as Celtic Diva, Jake’s Thunder, Shianne, Clan Eirann, Grundon, Haisu, Smart Force, Graduation Girl, Smart Assignment, Smart Enforcer, Divvy Up and Hot Muffin. The sire Superman, was specifically selected for Mensa Miss due to the proven and successful cross with bitches that have Head Honcho or Just The Best in their pedigree. Mensa Miss has both and was a strong race bitch who was also placed in city class over 710m.

PAUL DOLAN When Whata Nice Size won a Monday night fifth grade at Albion Park in December last year, winning owner Len Antonio made a statement. “I’ve got high hopes that this dog can go on to some good quality wins,’’ Antonio said at the time.

Once again, the eagle-eyed, 77-year-old, Ipswich-based retiree was proven right. In the recent Molly Campbell Memorial Silver Dollars final at Albion Park, it was all Whata Nice Size, leading all the way in race record time. The son of Elite Blue Size and Chevy Cherokee ran 29.89 seconds. This was the 18th running of the Silver Dollars, an event restricted to greyhounds up to 27 months of age. The race record had stood to year 2008 winner, Paul Felgate’s Matching Outcome at

30.03. Whata Nice Size is, in fact, the first winner of the race to break 30 seconds. Time comparisons at Albion Park with yesteryear are somewhat pointless, though. The starting boxes have a different timer activation, resulting in faster first sections and overall times. And greyhounds are racing on a recently reconstructed track surface. Still, Whata Nice Size has his name in lights and that’s all that matters to Antonio and trainer Tony Brett. Antonio purchased Whata Nice Size from Julie Edmondson in November last year. At the time, the dog had raced five times for three wins, all over 395 and 431 metres. “Len rang up and asked could I fit another dog in. I said, Len, I’ve got a full kennel and they are queuing up at the front gate. But I did manage to find a spot for this dog. I must admit I had reservations whether he would run out a strong 520 metres. Once again, Len proved to be a good judge,’’ Brett said. Edmondson put Whata Nice Size through the 2013 Ipswich Magical Puppy Auction, meaning the dog is eligible for the auction race related series which commences on the 14th of next month. That’s a group two series, worth $40,000 to the winner. Whata Nice Size collected $6,860 winning the Silver Dollars at Albion Park, as well as the Harris family donated trophy of two sets of mint condition silver dollar coins, purchased from the Royal Mint in Perth. “We usually purchase one set of four coins but it’s not that simple,’’ Molly Campbell’s son Billy said. “You put your name on a waiting list and sometimes get what you want, sometimes not. In this case, the set we were allocated wasn’t the same as in recent years so we purchased four additional single coins to keep the value of the trophy similar.’’ Tony Brett feels there is a definite place for memorial races. “Obviously they are named after special people. The Brisbane club runs a maiden series in memory of my dad (Dave Brett) and it was a huge thrill the first time I won that race. As it is with the

as ‘the Lure’ in the 1960s. It was later called the Queensland Greyhound Form Guide. Production ceased in the year 2000 with the diminishing race crowds, some track closures, and form becoming available via the internet. At one stage, the form guide was produced for each of Queensland’s 14 greyhound tracks.

Keith simply Caught the bug PAUL DOLAN Like a good wine, Keith Sternberg keeps getting better with age. The 85 years old North Ipswich resident is a catcher for a number of trainers, catching their greyhounds mainly at Ipswich but also Albion Park. Sternberg keeps a record of how many greyhounds he catches and his 2014 figures are his best ever. He caught 1800 greyhounds last year, for 407 winners, 287 seconds and 266 thirds. He caught 260 winners in 2011, 270 in 2012 and 293 in 2013. “There were a couple of factors for the big tally last year. Ipswich had six weeks of conducting Albion Park meetings while that track was closed for reconstruction. And I managed to stay out of hospital all year,’’ Sternberg said. “It all started many years ago. My son Greg owned dogs which were trained by Ron Ball. I used to go to the trials and get up close and personal.’’ “Tony Brett saw me there one day and said – you look like you want to get involved. How about we get you a handler and catching license? That’s what happened.’’ Greg Sternberg is the well known veterinary surgeon, based in Laidley. “I remember the first winner I caught. It was Zippy Zena for Gary Moore,’’ Keith said.

When asked about the best greyhound he has caught, Sternberg is a little coy. “It would be Tony Brett’s champion, Bogie Leigh. She didn’t get beaten very often but when she did, it was usually me who was the catcher. I was sort of blaming myself for those defeats and said to Tony that it might be best if I didn’t catch her any more.’’ As well as attending several race meetings each week, and repairing broken muzzles for trainers, Sternberg manages to find time to do voluntary work with Meals on Wheels every Tuesday in Ipswich.

Well Old Mate it won’t be the same at your Rosco, we will be thinking of you every time

Rosco, ‘Old Mate’, of course we were on! We start 2015 with a very happy New Year to our fellow greyhound colleagues. On a personal note, I started 2015 awful with the tragic death of a real good mate of mine, Rosco Gorman, who passed away on the 1st of January 2015. Rosco was one of the true real good blokes of our sport and I had the privilege of knowing him for over 35 years. Growing up in Grafton in the early 80’s we would go to Grafton greyhounds or gallops on the Saturday and then after the last race we would hop in the car and head straight over to casino or Lismore dogs - whichever track was racing (they would take it in turns as there was no TAB then just bookies). This is where I first met Rosco his wife Freda and kids Mark, Tony, Tracey and one of my best mates Johnny.

Albert’s Diary Darryl ‘Albert’ Gleeson is not only a cornerstone of the small Chase newspaper team, he is also regular and welcome face at greyhound tracks across Queensland and NSW. Here’s Albert’s Diary – an insightful look into the busy life of the bloke ‘who knows everyone’. My great mate Rosco Gorman

table anymore without you, but I will tell you we have a harpooner (schooner) In our car would be my dad, ‘Chicka’ mum Maxine, brother Peter, myself and later in life Terry and Russell Bailey and George Ward. I swear some Saturday nights there would be more people from Grafton over there then Richmond people. Rosco, he had four nicknames. The first was Rosco P.K. - the character out of that wacky comedy show the Dukes of Hazard in the early 80s. Then there was ‘The Legend’, which Craig Hackett gave him for his tipping ability and drinking ability (we all tried to beat him, but good luck to that. He was an A grader). And the third one which I gave him was The Sticker. He would back Dennis or Matt Reid’s dogs at any price. He wouldn’t care if they where $34 or $1.50, he just wanted to be on. This was his camp as son Johnny is often seen leading Matty’s dogs to the boxes Australia wide. The best two results to prove this was the 1994 Topgun. Rosco and Freda where on course to cheer New Fox home at the juicy odds of $26. Rosco has $50 each-way ‘Zorba’ as we knew him (New Fox). Straight to second down the back and it was all over. Zorba bolts in, Rosco ‘The Sticker’ fattens up a nice win. The latest one was last year. Another one of Matt’s - Arctic Star - won the final of the John Stollery Trophy race at Lismore at $21. Rosco ‘The Sticker’ again cleans up. He says ‘when will they learn’. And his last nickname was ‘Old Mate’. Col Graham, a good mate of Rosco’s from Kyogle, had a dog called Old Mate in the 80s. We had a bit of luck on the punt with this dog and the name is still used as we speak now between John, Col and myself. Rosco also liked the gallops, following mainly

Rosco’s family, from left, Johnny, Mark, Freda, Tracey and Tony. two jockeys. The first, our little mate Benny ‘The Ferret’ Looker, around the locals and a fanatical greyhound follower. But his favourite jockey of all time was Melbourne hoop Craig Williams. Rosco would always be heard saying at his favourite table with all his mates – ‘Youse can have Purton, Oliver, Bowman, Rawiller, Boss this bloke Williams has lengths on them. ‘I don’t know about that old mate’, I would say and the argument would be on.

Couper Geysen FAMILY AND ANIMAL LAW

Everyone would go to the Services Club for a drink - and it was always to Rosco’s table (if you could get on it). Blokes like The Coach (Mick Landy), Craig and Steve Hackett, Noel Corcoran, The Goose, Johnny and the normal mates when they where in town like Geoff Sattler, Bobby Slade and Bobby MacMurrey. Well Old Mate it won’t be the same at your table anymore without you, but I will tell you Rosco, we will be thinking of you every time we

have a harpooner (schooner) - oh that’s right Old Mate it has to be Tooheys New. PS: You wouldn’t believe it. The night of January 1 Rosco’s favourite dog, Miner’s Moss, trained by Matty Reid of course, won at Albion Park at the luxury odds of $7.20. I can just hear Rosco saying from the TAB in the sky: ‘I hope you was on Old Mate’, and the answer was, ‘We sure were’. And I bet you were of course.

‘Silvie’ now a gold “

They have virtually paid for half this property. We bought it for the dogs, now they have to pay it off.

MIKE HILL ‘’It’s like winning the lottery.’’ Those were the words uttered almost in unison by Bill and Cyndie Elson as they spoke about their outstanding broodbitch Regal Silver while walking around their 40-acre greyhound training and breeding complex at Churchable. Regal Silver, or Silvie as she is known to the Elsons, is fast becoming one of the star broodbitches in Queensland. She wasn’t a standout on the track, winning nine races from 61 starts for $5946 in prizemoney, but in the past 18 months, members of her first litter to Premier Fantasy - they could be better called the Magnificent Seven - have amassed in excess of $300,000 without the help of a group win.

mine for the Elsons Bill unsure of flying Fantasy Churchable trainer Bill Elson has admitted he was contemplating a Melbourne mission for one of his kennel stars, Bill’s Fantasy, pictured left. Elson said he had spoken with leading Victorian trainer Darren McDonald during the Brisbane Cup carnival late last year about preparing the 20-race winner, including 15 at Albion Park, for a stint in the southern capital. galloper Cydnie’s Special finishing fourth in the final. The win topped off a fantastic 2014 campaign for Keybow, which also included victories in the Group One Perth Cup and the Group Three Silver Bullet. He also finished second in the Group One Australian Cup, the Group Two Cranbourne Cup and the Group Two Queensland Derby and third in the Group One Melbourne Cup. McDonald told Elson’s wife: ‘’Cyndie, the dog will be fine. I’ll take him. You know he will be in good hands.” She admitted Bill’s Fantasy is her

Abby’s Fantasy

Litter’s winning % 22.3, place % 57.7 Source: GRV website The litter is headlined by the super consistent Cyndie’s Special ($77,235) and the hard chasing Bill’s Fantasy ($72,490), while the other five all city winners - are Hope’s Fantasy ($55,785), Abby’s Fantasy ($46,870), Trav’s Fantasy ($31,605), Wazz’s Fantasy ($16,645) and Shanae’s Fantasy ($4010). “They have virtually paid for half this property,’’ said a doting Cyndie. ‘’We bought it for the dogs, now they have to pay it off.’’ Because of Silvie and her offspring, Bill and Cyndie, who has given up her job to work fulltime with her husband, say they are living the dream. They only moved into the property three months ago and already their glory ride has lifted an extra cog with Regal Silver’s second litter. Another clutch of seven -- this time by Magic Sprite -- began hitting the tracks in late October with instant success and amazingly they, too, can boast being a 100 per cent winning litter. Collectively their record so far is 20 wins, 10 seconds and five thirds from a total of 57 starts and they have banked more than $39,500. Most of that success has come at Ipswich because when they began racing Albion Park was closed due to track renovations, said Elson. Cyndie added: ‘’It worked out great for us. Ipswich is closer and the ‘Magic’ pups just love the Ipswich track.’’ Bill, who has already refused an offer for Cyndie’s Magic (four wins and two seconds from eight starts), has high hopes for the litter. He believes they will be better than the Premier Fantasy seven, and feels he may have his first group winner somewhere in the litter. Elson has been training for more than 30 years and says he has to pinch himself occasionally to make sure he is not dreaming. So successful has he been in recent times, he says he occasionally gets a ribbing from rival trainers when he doesn’t win a race. Cyndie admits they are lucky to have Regal Silver, a striking blue bitch by Surf Lorian out of the very smart Placard bitch Wongawillisue.

husband’s favourite dog from their highly successful Premier FantasyRegal Silver litter. Cyndie said her husband then started to have second thoughts. ‘’Bill said ‘I don’t know if I will let him go’. McDonald told the Elsons to give him a ring in a week’s time’. ‘’During that week Bill had changed his mind,’’ Cyndie said. Elson later admitted he wasn’t completely opposed to sending Bill’s Fantasy to Melbourne sometime in the future. Let’s see.

Broodbitch Regal Silver .... a little gold mine for her connections. In 2008, the Elsons’ son Travis and his wife Hope travelled to Dapto for the annual puppy auction. ‘’We had all picked out these dogs we were going to buy,’’ said Cyndie. She said when ‘the kids’ arrived at the Dapto sales there were a few problems and they had to change their plans. ‘’Trav rang me and said ‘mum we are going to buy this bitch, it is only going to cost us $5000’,’’ she said.

‘’He said there is a sister to the dog (which Cyndie had picked out, later to be named Major Billy Blue). She’s really good looking and you can have her for $5000. ‘’I said ‘well grab her’. So that’s how I came to get her, which is amazing because she has turned out to be a terrific bitch.’’ Major Billy Blue may have been better than his sister on the track with 22 wins and $14,718 in stakemoney from 103 starts, but Silvie is proving to be a little gold mine in the breeding boxes.

“And she is a fantastic mother, she just does everything right,’’ said Cyndie. Showing her ability as a broodbitch, Regal Silver finished second to Kenneth Crawford’s Where Are You in the Brisbane club’s dam points award for 2014 and indications are she could be an early favourite for this year’s title. Adding to her glowing reputation, Cyndie’s Special was a narrow runner- up to You Can Talk in the Brisbane greyhound-of-the-year title. The Elsons have their fingers crossed that more success is not far away. Silvie has a litter of 10 to 2012 National Sprint Championship winner Fabregas that are six or so months away from debuting and a third grouping of seven by Cosmic Chief that has Cyndie’s heart racing. “They are gorgeous looking pups ‘’ she said. And for the first time Regal Silver has thrown several non-black pups. ‘’There are a number of beautiful red fawn and fawn pups in the ‘Cosmo’ litter. They are magnificent,’’ said Cyndie. As far as the Elsons are concerned, Regal Silver has given them the opportunity to start a damline that could rival the best in the land. They have already targeted bitches from the first two litters to, hopefully, carry on Silvie’s success. And a tip for punters - follow the dogs with Cyndie in their name in future litters - Cydnie’s Special is one of the standouts from the first litter and Cyndie’s Magic has Bill excited from the Magic Sprite litter. Bill admits his wife has a good eye for spotting a smart chaser and, as the official owner of Regal Silver, Cyndie gets first pick at naming a pup in each litter. * In last month’s edition of the Chase, it was stated in a feature by David Brasch that the odds of breeding a litter that contains 5 individual city winners are 1 in 3000. Regal Silver has done better than that in her first litter and the Elsons are hoping she can repeat the feat in subsequent litters.

Sticka’s miracle return “ “

The fact that she is back racing is a testament to the dedication of Mal and Ross

MIKE HILL Anthony McVicker credits the devotion of a dedicated trainer and the professionalism of a country vet for Sticka Size’s amazing winning comeback at Albion Park last month. Almost 12 months earlier the daughter of Bekim Bale and Size It Up - and sister to Grouplevel performers Oscura and Size Does Matter had shattered her rear right leg in a 520m race at Albion Park. She had won three of her first six starts and was in a winning position when tragedy hit, said McVicker, who lives on the NSW central coast. ‘’I wasn’t at the meeting. All I knew was that she was leading when it happened,’’ he said. ‘’Some patrons even thought she should be put down. ‘’But we were lucky. ‘’Mal (trainer Mal Cuneo) knew how good she was and her potential as a broodbitch and with the help of the course vet they decided to bandage the injury. The vet took her home to his place for the night and then transferred her to Kyogle vet Ross Brown the next day.” Then began Sticka Size’s long rehabilitation under Brown’s watchful eyes. ‘’The leg had been broken in too many

places for the vet to use screws to repair it,’’ said McVicker. ‘’So he patched the bones back together and put the leg in plaster for two months. After that it was just bandaged.’’ Brown visited the injured greyhound many times at Cuneo’s Yorklea kennels near Casino as the vet and trainer maintained a constant vigil as the bitch made a slow but sure recovery. ‘’The fact that she is back racing is a testament to the dedication of Mal and Ross,’’ said a proud owner. McVicker had purchased Sticka Size from well-known owner-breeder Julie Edmondson for $4000. “We knew she was going to be good,’’ he said. ‘’She had broken in well and was a star in the making. After her first few runs we had hoped to send her to Melbourne for some group races.’’ McVicker has about a dozen greyhounds in Melbourne under the guidance of leading trainer Paul Anderton . As time went on Cuneo and McVicker’s confidence grew that their smart bitch would once again return to the track. “Just before Christmas we knew she was back,’’ said McVicker. ‘’She put in three very fast post-to-post trials.’’ Then came January 19 - D-Day for Sticka Size and her connections. Would her leg stand up to the crash and bash pressures of racing.

UBET you can PAUL DOLAN Stand by for a name change for Tattsbet.

Miracle dog Sticka Size wins her comeback race at Albion Park. As it turned out, McVicker and Cuneo, who has just relocated his training operations to Churchable west of Brisbane, had nothing to worry about. Sticka Size bounced out of box five and gave nothing else a chance, winning by six and a half lengths in 30.06 - .01 outside the best time of the meeting. A week later she was back at the Brisbane track, but it wasn’t one of her better runs, she

finished fifth, beaten four and a quarter lengths. ‘’She pulled up fine,’’ said McVicker. ‘’However, she did hit a flat spot mid-race, but she finished off well. Maybe it was the second-up run hoodoo that many punters talk about. McVickers agreed, particularly after such a long spell and such an horrific injury. ‘’There’s nothing on the horizon in the short term for her,’’ he said.

“We will give her a couple of weeks off and then take it race by race. ‘’She might have a couple of starts and then I might retire her. We’ll see.’’ And anyone hoping to buy a Sticka Size pup is likely to be disappointed. ‘’I won’t be selling many of her pups, if any,’’

The original Queensland TAB became Unitab and later Tattsbet. Now, it’s changing again, this time to be known as UBET. One of the reasons for the change is to establish uniformity in Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory which have all been under the Tattsbet banner, but known by different names locally. Previously, you had the TAB in some states and the Tote in others. Also, UBET is, in the minds of its creators, a more catchy name. And UBET is designed to reflect a changing marketplace, where betting and wagering is more than just on racing and at the TAB. UBET means bet on everything and anything, as is possible nowadays. Sports betting is a real growing part of wagering. Progressively over the next few weeks, the name of Tattsbet will be phased out in signage, websites, retail outlets and anywhere else the name has popped up. Viewers on Sky Racing will notice that the word ‘Tatts’ is replaced by ‘UBET’ where odds are displayed. Tatts chief executive Robbie Cooke describes UBET as a ‘punchy, vibrant, live and young name’.

said McVicker. ‘’I don’t like selling my pups.’’

“ Victoria follows her calling “

I love being a part of all the excitement that is racing and I truly believe that

The “Girls on Track” promotion, an initiative of Racing Queensland, aims to highlight the important role that females play in all three racing codes. In addition, there are hopes that this promotion will also attract new participants to this industry of ours. Each code has its own specific events that are a part of this concept, with greyhound racing having three special races (The ‘Women in Racing’ Classic, Winged Runner Trophy and Female Trainer’s 5th Grade) in the spotlight. The finals of all three events will be held at Albion Park on March 26 and we are pleased to have Victorian race caller Victoria Shaw to call these races. For those that aren’t familiar with Victoria and her achievements in racing, she has a very interesting background and many varied contributions to the sport. While she is mostly recognised as being involved in thoroughbred racing, Victoria has an interest in all three codes. She remembers as a kid having a greyhound trainer living across the road from her parent’s home and these days has huge admiration for greyhound racecallers. “I really believe that it is the best ‘economy of words’ in calling greyhound races. It’s such a short time you are on air and you need to fit so much into it to be really effective. I have always wanted to call greyhounds and I’m really looking forward to doing so for the first time when I come to Albion Park,” she says. While Victoria is thought of by many as the first female race caller in Australia, that title in fact belongs to the late Pamela Knox-O’Connor, who called a race at Hanging Rock back in 1948. Ironically Victoria called her very first thoroughbred race at that same venue fifty years later, to the day! Since then she has called picnic race meetings throughout the states of Victoria and New South Wales on a regular basis. Victoria has also ventured into the ‘hallowed territory’ of metropolitan tracks Rosehill (NSW) and more recently Sandown (VIC) for broadcasting duties as well as being a guest caller at several TAB venues around the country. In a sport that has always been traditionally ‘male dominated’ in every aspect, over the years the barriers have gradually been torn down in racing and females have been able to prove that they are very capable in training, riding/driving (in horseracing of course!), being a bookmaker, racing administration and on-course roles such as judge etc. The last male dominated role is of course race calling and Victoria is hoping that one day, hearing a woman’s voice on air anywhere as a race caller is accepted as the ‘norm.’ “It’s been tough to be taken seriously, I don’t want to be seen as just ‘grandstanding’, it really is a passion for me,” Victoria states. “I love being a part of all the excitement that is racing and I truly

Legendary race caller Bill Collins believe that as a caller, I am carrying the hopes and dreams of all the people involved with that particular animal. From the owners to the trainers, the track staff…I always strive to do my absolute best for them each and every time I call a race.” Victoria had long held a dream of working in live radio and television broadcasting of racing but it wasn’t until a visit to Gippsland radio station 3TR as a trainee that she knew which avenue

within racing that she really wanted to pursue. “I saw a picture of legendary race caller Bill Collins on the wall in the foyer of the station and it cemented in my mind the direction I wanted to go. The excitement, the immediacy and the fact that there is no opportunity for ‘take two’ – well it just ticked all the boxes for me.” A conversation with the late and great man himself still leaves Victoria emotional before a

race meeting. “I spoke with Bill before he died – he was in a shocking state with cancer, but was so wonderful to me. He was very encouraging of me and my calling aspirations and said ‘I will be with you every step of the way’, yes it still leaves me teary…” Victoria’s first radio call was actually at a harness meeting at Devonport, in Tasmania. “Oh I will never forget that moment,” she laughs. “I had turned up at the meeting in my peppermint-coloured Versace waffle frock

February 2015 - Volume 3 Issue 2

as a caller, I am carrying the hopes and dreams of all the people involved (Victoria is always immaculately dressed at every function or race meeting she attends) and instantly realised I was very overdressed! “I met caller Shane Yates for the first time there and proceeded to enquire about the gear needed – binoculars stand etc. He had turned up without it and I was wondering how I was going to call this race properly. “Shane said ‘leave it with me’ and shortly turned up with a stick, and five rolls of air-conditioning duct tape to put around my binoculars! He began to fashion something that really resembled an item from a museum of modern art, and I said to him ‘how on earth is this going to work?’ “He came up with the idea that he would get down on all fours in front of me and move the stick so that I could follow the horses in my call. So there I was calling the fourth at Devonport with Shane in what could be interpreted as a ‘compromising position’ by anybody who didn’t know what was actually going on! It was hideous!” she laughs. “But I have been friends with Shane a long time now and he is a gem. He’s a wonderful all-rounder, being able to call all three codes well and is a great tipster too.” Along Victoria’s journey towards her dream, she has gathered an impressive CV of racing related roles such as being a spokesperson for TABCORP, prior to their acquisition of the NSW TAB. In this role she delivered both live and pre-recorded promotions for major race meetings and betting opportunities for women. Although betting on the races is something that is also seen as mainly for men, this is far from the truth.

“Many women may not necessarily have had a comfortable experience in the past or even a prior exposure to wagering over the telephone, internet, trackside or at the local TAB. We needed to show that it can be a positive experience and done in a way that was neither condescending nor confusing,” she says. Being a track MC, racing luncheon compere and hosting Fashions on the Field competitions have been other roles, along with being a racing panellist on various shows and a contributor to “Ladies in Racing Magazine”, but it is being a broadcaster that is Victoria’s greatest desire. She works fulltime as a secretary during the week to meet financial commitments, so her racing interest and passions take place during weekends and annual leave. “Hopefully the path I have chosen in the racing industry opens women’s minds to new possibilities as I continue to chase my own dreams,” she says. Queensland’s Hall of Fame greyhound commentator Paul Dolan recalls a female doing the race calling at Whyalla in South Australia about twenty-five years ago. “There was no caller in the town and the lady who was the secretary of the club stepped up to do the job. I phoned her and did an interview, during which she replayed one of her race calls and it was a good standard. “That track has since closed and I’ve always thought that somewhere along the line a female race caller might make her mark in the role. “I’m looking forward to Victoria Shaw being a part of what should be an exciting promotion, which will undoubtedly attract a lot of attention.”

Paul ‘Dogsy’ Dolan as we know and love him – a great race caller

Dogsy’s ‘double’ life

My logic is, if it makes someone’s day, why spoil their fantasy

F FROM THE CALLER’S BOX By Paul Dolan It is said that somewhere in the world, everyone has a double. I’m a bit different, it seems that I have more than one double! Way back when I went to school, there was a teacher, a Mr. Thorn, who regularly confused me with a classmate named Kevin Sadler. It was in the days when teachers addressed students by their surname. Mr. Thorn would regularly call me ‘Sadler’ and vice versa. Kevin and I were good mates and wondered at the confusion, as no other teachers identified us wrongly. We were never game enough to confront Mr. Thorn on the matter! Fast forward to my racecalling days. I turned up at Border Park, Tweed Heads one day, as the stand in caller while the regular guy was away. I pulled up at the ticket box and said to the lady: “Hello, I’m Paul, I’m doing the racecalling today.’’ Her face lit up and she said: “So you’re Paul Ambrosoli, I’ve always wanted to meet you.’’ I didn’t have the heart to let her down with the news that I was, in fact, Paul Dolan. We had a very brief chat and I’m sure, to this day, that lady thinks she has met the legendary Ambrosoli. You may know of Jamie Dunn, quite a big star on television in the 1990s with a puppet he created named Agro. Dunn lives in south-east Queensland and has worked in radio for about the past twenty years. Quite regularly, people approach me, believing that I’m Jamie Dunn. There is certainly a resemblance. A conversation usually follows, along the lines of where do you live, what are you doing these days etc. Like with the lady at Tweed Heads, I just play along for a bit of fun. One night, at a pub in Toowong in Brisbane, I was attending a mate’s birthday party. It also happened to be cheap drinks night for the university students. A young girl approached me, amazed that Jamie Dunn would be in her local pub. I told her why I was there and she was really nervous and completely overwhelmed. She pulled a small notebook out of her shoulder bag and requested my autograph. I asked her name, then

Proving they aren’t the same person – Jamie Dunn, left, and Paul Dolan. wrote: “To Susie, great to meet you, all the best, Jamie.’’ There are other occasions when I have signed an autograph too. Very recently, I pulled up at a shop to make a quick purchase and a young guy standing nearby said: “ Hey Jamie, you’re car is parked crooked.’’ I said thanks but I’m only going to be parked there for a minute.’’ When I came back out, the guy was still there, he was very polite, and offered to give me directions how to back my car out onto the

street without hitting the gutter. That happened, I put the window down and thanked him and he said: ‘’I can’t believe I have given driving instructions to Jamie Dunn.’’ My logic is, if it makes someone’s day, why spoil their fantasy? Not that many years ago I attended a function where Jamie Dunn was the compere. I went and saw him and told him how I get mistaken for him on a regular basis and he thought that was quite funny. He did concede that we look alike to some

extent. I asked Dunn has he ever been mistaken for Paul Dolan and he said: “No.’’ Clearly he is much more famous than me! Nowadays Jamie lives quite close to me and it’s only a matter of time before I see him again. And it’s odds on that there will be more people who will fall for the mistaken identity trick.

‘Clem’ a popular victory PAUL DOLAN Anyone within listening range of Selena Zammit during the recent Clem Jones Cup at Albion Park may have thought the trainer had lost the plot. “Go Clem, Go Clem,’’ she screamed as her bitch Buck City led the Cup field from box eight. Clem Jones is the former Brisbane Lord Mayor and sporting identity for whom the $20,000 Cup is named. He passed away in 2007. The ‘Clem’ to which Zammit was referring was not the late Mr Jones but Buck City, whose kennel name is Clementine or Clem for short. “That’s what we’ve always called her, so what a great race to win,’’ Zammit said. Buck City has come a long way in a short time. She won her maiden over 395 metres at an Albion Park Wednesday meeting almost six months ago to the day. The bitch is by Collision out of Lorralai. Zammit trained the dam who won 27 of her 72 starts. Buck City is owned by a group of five people. Some are newcomers to greyhound racing. Freddy’s Smile for John Dart finished second with Darren Russell’s Kidatee Croc third. Buck City clocked 35.01, which followed a 35.00 fifth grade win the previous week. Buck City paid $11.80 for a win in the Clem Jones Cup. The First Four on that event paid $6,234.10. Tattsbet had a quadrella jackpot on that meeting, with the Clem Jones Cup being the final leg. The jackpot starting amount was $12,611 and the pool finished at $65,054. The dividend was $6,604.50. So did Selena Zammit snare all or part of the winning quadrella or First Four dividends? ‘’I don’t make those type of bets. I had $10 each way on our bitch,’’ she said.

Close call in top award Queensland Greyhound of the Year

Flash Reality - won the group 2 Queensland Derby and group 3 Winter Carnival Cup at Albion Park

Iva Vision - became the first Queensland trained greyhound to win the Group 2 Sandown Shootout

Qld Awards night: Kedron-Wavell Services Club on Friday, March 13

PAUL DOLAN Tradition dictates that there are usually three finalists for the Queensland greyhound of the year award. On some occasions there have been four finalists. That has occurred when, in the opinion of the judging panel, there were four greyhounds with outstanding credentials. Or to put it another way, the one eliminated would be very badly done by. When the 13 member panel met recently to select the finalists and winner for the 2014 Queensland greyhound of the year, there was lengthy discussion as to whether four finalists should be declared. It would be fair to say that 2014 didn’t produce the best greyhounds ever but there were many worthy candidates. A starting list of twelve was culled down to eight and that’s where the discussion turned to having four finalists. But that wasn’t an easy task, with a ‘struck match’ between most under contention. In the end a secret ballot was done to determine three finalists, and it came up as, in alphabetical order, Flash Reality, Iva Vision and Yogi Blue. Highly commended and just missing out were Benarkin, Happy Haswell, Late Angel Lee, Rose of Galo and Wag Tail. With thirteen people selecting a winner from

Yogi Blue - won the group 2 Lismore Cup a list of three, a dead heat was possible. For example, the voting could have been 6, 6, 1 or 5, 5, 3. But the announcement was made that there was an outright winner, whose name remains a secret until the Queensland Awards Night at KedronWavell Services Club on Friday, March 13. Flash Reality, trained by Tony Brett, won the group 2 Queensland Derby and group 3 Winter Carnival Cup at Albion Park. The dog’s Albion Park record was 11 wins from 13 starts. Performances on all tracks throughout Australia

are taken into account, with an emphasis on Albion Park. Iva Vision for Peter Young won the group 3 South Australian Derby and group 2 Sandown Shootout. He became the first Queensland trained greyhound to win the Shootout. At Albion Park, Iva Vision won nine of his 14 starts. Yogi Blue for Peter O’Reilly won the group 2 Lismore Cup. He won six of 23 Albion Park starts. As well as the greyhound of the year, nominees were discussed and voted on for four important

awards. There were eight nominations for the Queensland greyhound racing Personality of the Year. There were five for the Women in Racing Award. Three names were put forward for the Young Achiever of the Year, for persons up to 35 years of age. The Top Simbi Award is given to a person, greyhound, organisation or event which created positive publicity for greyhound racing. There were three nominations for that category. The judging panel for the awards was made up of: Michael Byrne (Racing Queensland greyhounds chairman), Chris Williams (RQ board member), David Aldred (RQ greyhound racing manager), Doug Lutherborrow (RQ grader), Dale Cartwright (Brisbane G.R.C. president), Bob Lambert (Brisbane club vice president), Dennis Pegg (Brisbane club committee), Neil Beaton (Brisbane club committee), Darren Barbour (Brisbane club racing services manager) and media representatives Chris Bassani, Gerard Daffy, John Brasch and Paul Dolan.

Keybow wins the 2014 SKY Racing Brisbane Cup. The race will now be worth $100,000 to the winner.

Brisbane boosts prizemoney The Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club recently announced it will inject $104,500 into feature races conducted by the Club over the next 18 months. These increases are in addition to the increases to feature race prizemoney announced recently by Racing Queensland. Brisbane Club President, Mr Dale Cartwright said the club decided to increase its funding

commitment to feature prizemoney from the $32,000 provided in 2013/14 to $45,000 in 2014/15 and then $60,500 in 2015/16. Mr Cartwright said the increases were funded from the returns from the international export of racing vision of the Club’s races and via returns from the Club’s investment portfolio. “We are delighted to be able to inject further prizemoney increases into our feature races,” he said.

Three-State showdown Runners from Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria make up the field for the group 3 Big Dog Cup final at Albion Park (Thurs Feb 5). Three heats of the 600 metres event were run on January 29. Joe Borg from Maryborough in Victoria produced fastest winner Ralphy Cinel who carved out splits of 9.77, 11.89 and 13.00 en route to a sizzling 34.66 overall time. The track record stands to Oreo at 34.57, a long standing record which was set in August 2004.

Darren Russell’s Kidatee Croc chased Ralphy Cinel all the way and didn’t shirk the task. Terry Auckram’s Mister To Us made good ground from the back of the field to finish third. Borg has been training Ralphy Cinel since April last year for owner Michael Crowe. Ralphy Cinel has been excelling at distances around 600 metres in Victoria, at Sandown in particular. Ralphy Cinel is a son of former Queensland and Victorian trained superstar High Earner, who tragically died not long after going to stud. Borg finished second with Come on Fantasy in

The Reg Kay trained Good Call Paul stalked the three leaders to the top turn where he found an inside run to go on and score in 34.88. “Good Call Paul has pulled up one hundred percent after the win,’’ Kay said. Recent Clem Jones Cup winner Buck City for Selena Zammit led all the way from box seven to score in 35.08. Longshot Bon Yeo finished second for John Adams. The Tweed Heads based trainer is recovering from a recent stroke. The box draw for Thursday’s $25,000 to the

I would urge all participants in this industry to pay a visit to this facility to see for themselves what tremendous work is being done by only 3 people

GAP venue is an ideal facility Eleanor Wallis (Treasurer Brisbane Greyhound Club)

GREYHOUND

I recently had the fortunate experience of visiting the property where the GAP (Greyhound Adoption Program) is based. Thanks to the generosity of Dennis and Nina Uhrhane, GAP has the lease on a former kennelling property at Churchable, near Atkinson Dam, Queensland. Set on 40 acres of well maintained land, this facility is idyllic for the housing of the dogs to prepare them for re-homing. Couple this with the commitment of the 3 (Yes, only 3) staff, Bronwen, Sandra and Garry, and you have the perfect environment for these beautiful dogs to be ‘house trained’ for their new life. Many single use kennels are positioned all over this land; which is fully fenced, has stacks of trees for shade and also has a dam in another large paddock so the dogs can cool off. Other kennels are inside an air conditioned, insulated building. There is a kitchen, vet surgery and storage sheds and other well appointed amenities. We read news reports that RSPCA is rehoming large number of unwanted pets. RSPCA has a much larger profile. GAP does not enjoy

Adoption Program QLD Above and below: Part of the great GAP environment at Churchable. this wider profile and I think the Queensland Greyhound Industry needs to get behind the GAP program to enlarge its profile. I would urge all participants in this industry to pay a visit to this facility to see for themselves what tremendous work is being done by only 3 people. The dogs I saw were happy and contented, able to run around in large paddocks, or lounging in the air-conditioned kennels. From my observations of this fabulous facility, I think what this committed organisation needs is: a) Ongoing support from the industry for its wonderful cause b) A tractor to mow the grass (they have only a push mower now‌!) c) Hopefully scope to take in even more dogs. These beautiful creatures deserve all the love and care they get from everyone and GAP

“ Dyna Villa on the rise

Dyna Villa made some history, with the Jenny Hunt-trained chaser becoming the first greyhound to win the Paws Of Thunder and Melbourne Cup.

Dyna Villa ($2.20) continued his meteoric rise up the sprinting ranks, taking out the recent Group 1 Ladbrokes Paws Of Thunder (520m) at Wentworth Park. Jumping from box eight, Dyna Villa was able to cross from the wide draw and hold out the early pacesetters to lead going through the first turn. From there, Dyna Villa entered another gear, pulling away from his rivals to win by 2 1/2 lengths in 29.69. Assertive Bella ($4.70) held on well for second place with Kerrigan Bale ($11.90) a further 4 1/2 lengths away in third. Dyna Villa made some history, with the Jenny Hunt-trained chaser becoming the first greyhound to win the Paws Of Thunder and Melbourne Cup. Dyna Villa took his record to 19 wins from 30 appearances and has already earned more than $600,000 in prizemoney. While Dyna Villa’s dominant effort was tremendous, run of the night (and possibly year) came in the Group 2 Ladbrokes Summer Distance Plate (720m), in which Space Star, staged a breathtaking performance to win.

Space Star ($1.30) copped a severe check in the early stages and gave fellow Victorian Starc ($6.30) a huge start, only for the Robbie Brittontrained stayer to run him down in the final stages. Amazingly Space Star was able to cover the 720m in 42.18, 0.2 faster than he posted in his allthe-way heat win a week earlier. Robbie Britton has won dozens of group races but even he was gob-smacked at Space Star’s effort. “That was a run and a half, a beaming Britton said after the race. “I didn’t see him get hit in the early stages and when he dropped back sharply I thought he had broken down. “Then when he got going again I still believed he was gone and could not get anywhere near the leader from where he was. Meanwhile, Dyna Nico won the tenth running of the Collerson. Jumping smartly it was a one act affair, with the Andrea Dailly trained sprinter leading throughout for the Wheelers. After the placed runners the field finished in the following order Whittaker ($13.00), Maximum

Dyna Villa storms home in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Paws Of Thunder (520m) at Wentworth Park Lil ($18.50), Spring Leaf ($14.10), Shoulders ($6.80) and Coolabah Jet ($11.90). He has raced 30 times for 19 wins and nine placings. After adding the $100,000 first prize for the Paws of Thunder his stake earnings stand at $629,990. After the placings in the Summer Plate the field finished in the following order Pumped Up

Zarr ($20.30), Double Rinse ($38.80), Big Kat ($27.90), Serena Nimbus ($18.40) and Zipping Rory ($9.50). Space Star is a Black dog whelped June 2012 by Bekim Bale from Tonta Tears (Kiowa Sweet Trey x Tears) he is raced by Camilla Limon and trained by Robert Britton at Lara in Victoria. By Luke Gatehouse Brisbane Greyhound Club We are hoping for plenty of new faces and excited regulars over the next few months at Albion Park. The Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club is embarking on a new and exciting promotional program to reward regular race day punters and attract new patrons to the club on feature race nights. Race-goers attending the Brisbane Greyhounds will have the chance to win major prizes at all Feature and Group Race Nights commencing with the upcoming Group 3 Big Dog Cup Final on 5th February 2015. On this night 2 major prizes are up for grabs – a complete set of golf clubs with bag valued at $2,000 and an overnight stay at a Sunshine Coast Golf Resort with a round of golf for 2 people valued at $500. And these great prizes are just the beginning

with the major prize draws set to continue and include 3 and 4 night stays on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, boys and girls new bikes, theme park passes, family theme park resort holidays, cruise liner holidays, a box trailer full of camping equipment, trip to the 2015 AGRA National Championship Finals in Sydney. Plus at the Group 1 Garrard’s Horse and Hound Winter Carnival Cup on 2nd July one lucky patron will drive away in a brand new car. When announcing the prize booty, the club’s Vice President Les Bein said he believed the mega prizes will add to what is already a very attractive Feature Race period for the Club. “With the recent announcement of a significant prizemoney increase for feature races the BGRC Mega Prize Draws will further boost the profile of Greyhound Racing, both within the Industry and to the general public” he stated. “We want these Prize Draws to attract newcomers to the races, turn them into greyhound racing fans and reward them for it,” he added. So whether you are a track veteran or a firsttimer there has never been a better time to come to the dogs at Albion Park.

When is broodbitch’s use-by date IT’S common knowledge that dogs age faster than people. But the conventional wisdom that one dog year equals seven human years is an over-simplified view of how old your dog is in human years. Although a dog’s age averages out this way, there is quite a bit of variation. For example, dogs mature quicker than children in the first couple of years. So the first year of a dog’s life is equal to about 15 human years, rather than seven. Size and breed also influence the rate at which a dog ages. Although smaller dogs tend to live longer than larger dogs, they may mature quickly in the first few years of life. A large dog may mature slower at first but already be considered elderly at age five. So, what has all this got to do with breeding the greyhound? Well, I recently noticed a topic on the Greyhound Data website that asked about breeding with broodbitches that had reached eight years old. It was interesting stuff to say the least.

BREEDING DAVID BRASCH So I did a bit of study and came across a timetable that relates to greyhounds and their relative age in human terms. It is: Age of Human Dog Years 1 15 2 19 3 24 4 33 5 40 6 47 7 54 8 61 9 68 10 75

Grand dam of these pups is Apache Arrow. This line has produced That’s Just Me, Sunro Clapo, Best Percentage, Sneaky Little Me, Arrow on Fire, Stop Scrammin, Might Be Me, Just Like Me, Silent Effective, Oh So Striking, Wee Fire, Janda.... Think About Me’s full blood sister Best Percentage (1st BDC x AA mating) was also mated to Cosmic Rumble and produced Silent Effective. As most greyhounds live to about 12 years of age, that equates to 89 years in human terms. So, anyone planning on breeding with a greyhound bitch of eight years old can ask themselves would they put their 61-year-old grandmother through the same thing. The answer is most likely “no”! So what does all this tell us? It tells us that young, vibrant bitches, not long off the racetrack, are generally the best option of producing better quality race dogs. There will always be exceptions to every rule. A survey conducted in the US on the number of dogs from litters that went on to race in Group races showed the percentage started to drop off after the bitch turned five, and also after the third litter. (More of that later.) With that in mind, I looked through the results of every Group 1 race run in Australia in 2014 and looked at the age of the dams when they whelped their Group 1 winner. Race Winner Dam Age of Dam Silver Chief Ollie Bale Zambola Bale 4 Paws Iona Seven Iona Habit 3 Nat Futurity Rue De Kahn Shelbourne Dawn 4.5 Nat Derby Zipping Brock Cho Chang 4.5 Perth Cup Keybow Key Exit 5 WA Galaxy Born Ali Born Princess 3 Zoom Top Cheetah Zorro Fallen Zorro 4.5 Rookie Rebel Hawk Alone Glamorous Jade 3 Temlee Zelemar Fever Noaki Pace 3 Super Stayers Destini Fireball Greys Destiny 5 Association Cup Sweet It Is Off Springer 4.5 (NB: Sweet It Is also won Bold Trease, Sandown Cup, Nat Distance.) That is pretty much confirmation of what the US study found, with the inevitable few

exceptions. Also as an exercise, I decided to look through some of the greats. Brother Fox’s dam Pitstock Park was nine when she whelped the great sprinter and stud dog. Pitstock Park had litters in 1981, two in 1983 and a one pup litter in 1985. Temlee’s dam Temora Lee was three when she whelped the legend in 1972 her first litter. Temora Lee had litters in 1973, ’75, ’76, ’77, 78’ and ’80. Her champion producer daughter Viola Lee (dam of Tegimi) was a litter sister to Temlee.

But her very good producing daughters Misty Lee Piper and Temora Piper came from her 1980 litter. Viola Lee whelped Tegimi in 1977 when she was five. The legend Princess Diro was just two and a half when she whelped Bowetzel and then came back to racing. She would go on to have four more litters and the great producer Shining Light would come from her 1979 mating to Satan’s Legend. Shining Light was five when she whelped champion Shining Chariot and then three years later she produced Centrefire who would become

the dam of the great Light Of Fire. Legend Elsie Moss was whelped in 1959. She had litters in 1964, ’65 (twice), ’66 and was then sold to the US and whelped to Venerated in 1968. From that final litter came a dog called Thunderbolt Moss who was a very good stayer in the US and is found in a number of pedigrees of today including the damline of Kinloch Brae. Champion producer Secretly was prolific. She had litters in 1967, two in ’68, and one each in ’69, ’70, ’71, ’72, ’73 and ’74.

• From Page 33 From an early litter to Come On Clopook she got Academy Lass the dam of Dusty Rapid who is found in many, many pedigrees of today. But from her 1973 litter to Newmore King she produced the sisters Bonnie Secret and Newmore’s Secret who are found in the pedigree of Brother Fox and Pretty Short respectively. Champion Promises Free had seven litters from 1983 to 1991, so her last one was at the age of 11. The best litter she had by far was the 1986 litter which produced the “litter of the century” as it were described, including Amerigo Man, Walkabout Sid, West Cape etc. Now back to that US study. It was undertaken by a US greyhound racing devotee called Martin Roper. I hope he does not mind if I use his data. Reading through the Breeding and Whelping pages of Greyhound Review and seeing broods in the auction or in the classified section of the NGA website who are eight years old or older made me wonder what the productivity of these females might be, and especially why some top breeders would be selling bitches that had had successful litters. Were they worth buying? (In a bid to check the stats, Martin came up with a formula.) The only thing that has remained constant is the All America teams which have contained about eight greyhounds every year since its inception in 1963. Dam’s No of All Age Americans 2 11 3 38 4 68 5 99 6 64 7 37 8 24 9 9 10 1 It’s pretty clear a serious drop-off starts at age seven and decreases dramatically thereafter. Indeed, in the history of the All America awards, only one greyhound, Kithed, was whelped

after his dam’s 10th birthday, even though Hall of Fame broods were bred even after that without result. Roper, and those who study such facts and figures, can obviously conclude the Law of Diminishing Returns is clearly in effect when breeding dams over the age of six. Despite the fact they are “proven,” the likelihood of their producing anything like they produced in previous litters decreases exponentially every year. Indeed, a breeder is just as likely to produce

top-grade progeny from an unraced two-year-old than from a “proven” nine-year-old. Unproven three year-olds clearly outperform “proven” eightyear-olds. Obviously more five-year-olds are bred than nine-year-olds. This may be true, but I doubt that very many more five-year-olds are bred than seven-year-olds. Further, one would assume that of the older girls, the more proven ones are being bred. They should produce more right? A great historical example is Hall of Famer Miss Gorgeous.

offspring in 11 litters. Her first litter at age three (1987) produced Blendway and Bartie, who, along with their littermates, ran out $500,000 in purses. Her Bara Ray litter (at age four), produced Bara Buzz. Her Dutch Bahama litter (at age five) produced Buzz Around. Her last litters, whelped in 1992 and 1993 at age 8 and 9, produced little of note. Exceptions can be found, of course, but they do not prove the general trend wrong. In human beings we know that the older the woman the greater likelihood of birth defects, mental retardation, low birth weight, and complications in pregnancy. Dogs are no different. The 19th century’s great greyhound writer Stonehenge made similar analysis of major stakes winners in England between 1843-1853. His conclusion was that it was best to breed from bitches younger than seven years of age.

To get the final words on the subject of breeding with bitches of advanced age, I decided to call Paul Wheeler. If anyone knows about breeding broodbitches in the greyhound world it is Paul Wheeler. “It all depends on the broodbitch,” he said. “We’ve got successful litters from bitches that were 10 when they whelped them. “But, like all aspects of breeding, it depends on just how well the bitches are themselves. “We won’t hesitate to use an old bitch if she is still sprightly and not showing her age. It’s like women. Some might be 60 but appear and act like they are 40, but the reverse can always be the case. “If a bitch is starting to show her age, we will retire her from breeding.” Wheeler is in the enviable position of having plenty of quality race bitches to choose from and replace those older matrons. “Everything has to do with just how well that older bitch is,” he said.

Starting from box five, the son of Magic Sprite and Kara Janx pushed hard into the first corner, working his way into second position behind early tearaway leader Dyna Villa. Slowly but surely, the Rob Britton-trained star reeled in Dyna Villa, eventually striding to a one and a quarter-length victory in 29.78. Early leader Dyna Villa ($2.80) held on for second, while Dyna Double One ($2.30) lost no admirers with a third-placed finish after finding trouble early in running. The victory was Above All’s 10th from just 16 starts, pushing his prizemoney to $218,000 in the process. The win was a fantastic result for owners Merv O’Brien and Alison Lee, sending Above All to the Britton kennel after just two starts in New Zealand. In that time, the black chaser has made the Melbourne Cup final, won the Hobart Thousand and now adds the first Group 1 event of 2015 to his already bulging resume. Britton, who is one of Australia’s most successful trainers over the past 20 years, said Above All had special qualities. “I don’t know if he’s the quickest greyhound I’ve ever trained but he’s certainly among the most tenacious,” Britton said of Above All. “He reminds me of a dog I trained in the late eighties called Barbariot, who was so good that whenever he raced I felt that only bad luck could beat him.”

“That’s how I feel with Above All, except it was hard to be confident tonight because there were some really good dogs in the race.” “But he’s now won two Group 1s from Box 5, which is pretty special.” The night also saw a new time standard set over the 525 metres, with Allen Deed shaving .08 off Heston Bale’s former track record, running an amazing 29.37. The son of Jarvis Bale and Greta Bale run home in an amazing 11.73 to become the third consecutive Paul Wheeler-owned chaser to break the sprint record at the track. It was one of seven winners for Andrea Dailly on the night, including the first five past the post in the night’s Free For All and a third in the Group 1 final. In the Silver Chief after the placed runners the field finished in the following order 4th Midnight Flynn ($19.30), 5th Emrys ($34.90), 6th Amaro Bale ($49.70) 7th Gorham Bale ($28.80) and Dyna Quirk ($39.20). Above All is a Black dog whelped July 2012 by Magic Sprite from Kara Janx (Fashion Thief x More Than This). He is raced by Alison Lee and trained by Robert Britton at Lara in Victoria. He has now won ten races and been placed on three occasions from his 16 starts. The Silver Chief first prize of $100,000 brings Above All’s overall prizemoney to $218,165. The Classic is one steeped in tradition, first being run in 1964. Directors of the Melbourne Greyhound Racing association saw fit to name The Classic after the greyhound Silver Chief.

Hull name spreads in

Darren Hull is now making a name for himself at the Bulli club.

There were cables, wires everywhere, hanging off roofs, you have never seen anything like it. The meeting went ahead and Wagga had their first TAB meeting. When the subject of Wagga is brought into conversation in this sport there is no doubt that one name is responsible for the lift to the club’s current level of success and that name is not just one that is associated with greyhound racing alone.

The ‘Hull’ name is known to everyone in the Riverina of NSW in business, politics and sport. But the new millennium founded a new name in greyhound racing - Darren Hull who was to become the saviour of the Wagga Greyhound Club in 2002. His father, Graeme was the President of the club back then at the old North Wagga track before they moved to their current site at the Wagga Showgrounds. “Dad approached me and in a desperate way asked if I could stand for president as the club was in a bad way,” Darren recalls. He took up his father’s challenge and was elected unopposed. Darren had no idea how bad the club’s position was until he delved into the books and realised the mammoth task that lied ahead. “I don’t think many knew how close the club was to folding then, they were well into the red with the bank, pile of unpaid bills and the club had the lowest TAB distribution”. When Darren left school he completed his apprenticeship as a panel beater which led him into the family business.

GARY CLARK

His dad and mum (Kay) started up the Graeme Hull Smash Repairs. “From the clothes they (mum and dad) stood in the business was formed and I eventually joined them,” Darren explained. In fact Darren operated the business for 12 years before he switched to greyhound racing. His father had been a big part of Darren’s life - he saw his son as inspirational in any venture he may be involved in in the future. His mum Kay won her first political fight when she became the first woman to obtain a NSW tow truck driver’s licence. From there Kay saw another career path that she was ready for and became the Federal Member for the Riverina for 13 years before retirement. For Darren his dedication was now with the Wagga Greyhound Club and a proposal to change the TAB distribution to clubs to incorporate an incentive scheme was approved by GRNSW. With the increase in distribution the income generated through this new scheme in the first

three years had now contributed to the club getting out of debt. “Our balance sheets looked brighter, maintenance issues were resolved and in 2013 I lodged an application to GRNSW for a new track surface,” Darren remembered. Probably the moment that consolidated the club’s future was a phone call from GRNSW CEO Brent Hogan on the 25th August, 2007 at 3.00p.m. “I was sitting in my car watching my son Nick play soccer when I took the call,” Darren recalls. This was at the start of the equine influenza outbreak that crippled the gallop industry in the State. With all meetings cancelled on that Saturday, Wagga greyhounds was the only non-Tab meeting on the Sunday and the TAB were looking to urgently try to fill the holes that were accruing in the TAB slots. “Brent asked is it would be possible to run Wagga as a TAB meeting, I made a couple of fast phone calls and rang Brett back and said we would have a crack.” What took place in the 24 hours that followed was amazing in itself, but the club had Darren Hull at the helm. The club rang every trainer to inform them to be dressed for a TAB meeting and also organise a vet. But the real test was to have the track cabled and ready for SKY to present the meeting. “There were cables, wires everywhere, hanging off roofs, you have never seen anything like it. The meeting went ahead and Wagga had their first

TAB meeting. “We had no sleep that night but it was all worth it. The help from Wayne Milgate form the Harness Club who had already SKY meetings was invaluable.” Darren was already thinking ahead, he was contacted by Sam Nati of SKY the next day to congratulate him and expressed if he could return the favour to let him know. So Darren took the opportunity there and then and asked Nati if he could have TAB coverage for their Cup meeting and that was granted. Then when Sky 2 was launched Darren made application for Wagga to become a full time TAB club as all the optic fibre was in place and the club was granted the TAB licence. Then in December 2013 a shock wave went through Wagga when Darren resigned and left for the coastal town of Bulli. “The GBOTA was looking for a fresh start at the track, new management and new ideas so I decided to make the decision and head into new territory.” This was a huge move for Darren, no one in the industry could believe he had left Wagga, it was like Santa leaving the North Pole, the Riverina was his home, always had been but due to personal issues Darren was on the move, and it was time. “The one thing that impressed me was the structure the GBOTA had in place to run race clubs with a major emphasis on accountability.”

NSW greyhounds Darren was also was very complementary of the GBOTA’s Operations Manager Ellen Harris who he said is a very hard worker and values her input and assistance. “I have a very good team to work with at Bulli. I have a long term commitment here and see the Bulli complex having so much potential.” Already in his first 12 months, Darren has moved the 400m boxes to new ground which ensures a cleaner start, introduced a new 590m start and has given travelling trainers the chance to compete at Bulli by way of a heat and final series during the year with clubs like Wagga, Temora and Goulburn. While Darren has always been on the side there has been one occasion that he decided to try his fortune at training but that was short lived thanks to one incident at his home track. Darren got a giveaway dog to start his training career and it had a few problems, mainly in the boxes, he kept turning around. So Darren worked hard with his dad at rectifying the problem and the time had come for him to have his first starter. “Club Secretary at the time was Arthur Thompson and he approached me after kennelling with a suggestion to let a new person handle the dog as this may fix the problem, I didn’t really know a lot about it so I let Arthur box the dog this day,” Darren explained. As the runners were behind the

boxes, Arthur fell over and couldn’t get up. He wouldn’t let go of the lead so the Steward went without Darren’s first runner. As the race commenced Arthur and the starter were wrestling with the dog behind the boxes. Darren did find time over the years to enjoy some social sport and loves his cricket. After being out of the sport for 15 years, six years ago the idea was put forward to have a son and fathers’ cricket side, so he made his return to the pitch. After a few hidings Darren had a good first year back scoring 600 runs. Eventually they got better and made a few finals. “The moment came in 2013 when we won the Grand Final and both my sons, Josh and Nick played with me, so for all three of us to enjoy this moment was special,” Darren says. Darren also enjoys throwing a line into the water and relaxing and later this year has plans to go to the USA with Nick. At the age of 49 Darren Hull has been a family man, loyal to the commitment set by his mum and dad, a man that has his own ideas, many that have helped others and set standards. The Hull name is in foreign waters these days but the people of the South Coast of NSW are about to realise they Darren Hull, brother Brett and Mum Kay at the 2013 presentation for the Graeme Hull Memorial Wagga Cup have one very special and gifted per- won by Victorian trainer Michael Carter (left) and Jimmy Lane. Patience pays plenty “

That’s pups it takes a while to build consistency but Boxhead has now shown some ability.

ANDREW THOMSON

A LITTLE bit of patience has paid big dividends for Lara trainer Jeff Britton in the rich Warrnambool VicBreeders maiden series. The interestingly named Boxhead went through the series undefeated, clocked a slick 25.18 seconds in the semi-finals and then started as a short-priced favourite in the final before winning as predicted. Britton said another up-and-coming chaser Mine Craft had to be scratched from the Cranbourne VicBreeders after clocking a super quick 30.45 in the semis due to kennel cough and Boxhead came down with the same complaint soon after winning the Warrnambool series. “Boxhead was able to go through the series and get the cash. He’s then gone to the Meadows got held out in the run to the first corner and ran a pretty handy second so he’s coming along all right,” Britton said. “We’ll just ease off him now he’s got a cough and then get him back to the track.” Britton said Boxhead had graduated from breaking in with glowing reports. “As a pup he came with as big wraps from the breakers, but he didn’t show much for three months,” Britton said. “He wasn’t showing much at all until I took him to Warrnambool for a solo trial on a Saturday morning and he ran 25.46 which was a pretty good run,” he said. “He then just kept improving. The rest of his litter are the same. They’re all coming good now,” he said of the Collision sired youngsters. “That’s pups - it takes a while to build consistency but Boxhead has now shown some ability. It was a bit concerning he came with such big wraps and he wasn’t going as well as half of my pups but the good news is he’s come good.” Britton said experience had taught him to treat each pup differently. “It depends on the dog. Some you keep a bit longer and give them that time just to make sure. You don’t want them to go somewhere else and take off - they can make you look a bit silly,” he said. “Some times you do give them that extra month. Boxhead had a few injury problems and that can hamper their development. It was nothing major but just enough to knock him around a bit.” The Lara trainer said he was coming off his best ever year and was looking forward to the future. “Having said that we’ve got a few down with injuries and a bit of a cough going around, we probably should be having a week off,” he said. “But that’s greyhound racing. It certainly helps when you have lines like Barry Smith’s Mepungas coming through. That line is just getting stronger and stronger. They used to lead and they would be a chance of getting run down,” he said. “But now if they lead they generally just keep getting further in front. I’m trialling some good Mepunga pups at present and they look like they are going to be pretty handy,” he said.

Matthews response Stawell district greyhound breeder Paul Matthews, who previously owned Deadly Vane wanted to respond to last month’s story on gun trainer Joe Borg.

Britton said he was also curious about the Victorian thoroughbred horse trainer currently being investigated for allegedly using stimulant cobalt. “I heard about cobalt for the first time a couple of months ago. There’s always something coming along as a topic of conversation,” he said. “If it’s being used in horses I don’t know of it being used in greyhounds. I suppose the authorities need to look into that and come up with a level. All we want is for everyone to be on a level playing field. “It doesn’t really worry me - swabs are being

kept - everyone knows that so those who chose to go down that path will be caught up with sooner or later,” he said. The Warragul cup heats in mid January produced one of the most stirring match races in recent years with boom youngster Big Ticket and country cups supremo Luca Neveelk going head to head. Big Ticket looked to have eventually got on top in the shadows of the finish post only for the champ Luca Neevelk to fight back right on the line and snare a stunning win.

Matthews, who breeds, breaks-in and pretrains, said Deadly Vane was bred and owned by him and his ex-wife Michele Matthews. He said both he and Michele decided to sell the well-performed dog when their relationship broke down. Matthews disagrees with Borg’s claim in the story that: “He (Deadly Vane) was sold from underneath me”. According to Matthews: “Joe had several opportunities to purchase the dog. “When the (final) offer came for $76,000 we still messaged Joe to give him the last chance to purchase, but didn’t hear from him in the time-frame asked, so the dog was sold. “We have never sold a dog when placed with a trainer before this time and have no plans to in future. “It’s so hard to get dogs with the best trainer and we were disappointed with the context of last month’s story.” Matthews said Deadly Vane always had ability and was trialling 25.60 around Ballarat before Borg took over training duties although he agreed Borg had done an outstanding job turning the chaser into one of the most promising in the land. “There’s no doubt Joe did a super job with the dog,” he said.

The GBOTA has been forced to look at the viability of its canteen at Capalaba

Bad news start to 2015 QGBOTA President TONY ZAMMIT

Isn’t it amazing how things change in the racing industry from one year to the next.

Thankfully, with the printing of the Chase newspaper on a monthly basis we highlight some of the good news and wonderful amazing people in our industry.

At the end of 2014 everyone was on a high because of increased turnover and increased prizemoney, appearance money to help with our travel expenses to race meetings, a new track on the horizon to be finished by July 2015 etc. Just when we think we’ve conquered the critics, 2015 arrives and yes you guessed it, a new scandal for the racing industry appears with the Cobalt swab affair. Headlines in the newspapers, bad news on television screens depicting the racing industry of drug cheats again. No doubt more will come to the surface in the near future, but it’s publicity the industry doesn’t need. One thing the greyhound code can be thankful for is that our owners and trainers are not involved in this scandal, but still racing needs more positive and good stories than bad. Thankfully, with the printing of the Chase newspaper on a monthly basis we highlight some of the good news and wonderful amazing people in our industry. With all the anti-racing people out there trying to discredit us many in the media jump on the bandwagon. Recently there have been more postings on websites trying to depict greyhound racing as a cruel sport. Even the Greens political representative for the Logan area is campaigning against a track at Logan as well as rebel rousers protesting around the site. Even late last month at Albion Park, there was a current affairs film crew turn up. Albion Park management were not too happy that a licensee would invite them to the track. Thank goodness owners and trainers responded by giving them a wide berth. They filmed nearly every race watching to see if anything happened which could be of interest to their show. One thing is for sure, they were not there to film races for form or to have a punt next week, nor were they there to sample the A La Carte food at the canteen. Let’s just wait and see what sort of story will be presented when it is all edited. Anyone who races at Capalaba will know the QGBOTA run the canteen on race days and for about 15 years have been able to work well with the Capalaba club and committee. When we first started the building was provided and the GBOTA paid for all the fittings, fridges, freezers and cooking equipment. For many years Pat

Marchant and Stephanie Houghton organised food and menus and volunteers from committee and members would provide assistance. We run raffles in conjunction with the club raffling meat trays supplied by Oxley meats at Redcliffe and we sincerely thank them for their support. In the last 3-4 years committee member Joanne Hutchinson has been our registered caterer and with her expertise, Joanne has endeavoured to

spice up the menu with a varieties of food and to her credit has pleased all of our customers. Joanne has also been assisted in the cooking department by Helen Sant and Cliff Houston, who are also in the catering business. Their voluntary work is also much appreciated. Just recently, Joanne has had so much on her plate that she will have to retire from cooking at the canteen and because we are not just running a sausage sizzle on the barbie, we have

to employ a registered caterer. That would be fine except we have also over the past year been faced with problems at Capalaba. Getting new volunteers has become so hard lately and I have expressed concerns and sought assistance. With much of our funding going towards our trial track at Lawnton there has been no response from north side members. Sadly, we are at a point where the canteen may be closed. We are presently going to meet with the Capalaba committee to try to work out a solution. We still own all the equipment and have to decide with the committee where we will go with that. Someone who will be greatly disappointed will be John Pay who visits the canteen very frequently on race days. Again, I thank all committee members and anyone who has been of assistance to the canteen over many years. I would like to welcome new members Keith Donaldson, Doug Currie, Glen Boody, Bev Beesley, Glenda and Darrell Wallam, Justine and Clint Winchester, Keith Raines and John Watts.

Hats off to Ritza Ritza Hattie took her prizemoney earnings to more than $200,000 by taking out the recent Group 2 Woy Woy Poultry Supplies Gosford Gold Cup.

Trained by Mark Gatt, Ritza Hattie ($7.90) stalked the early pace set by Jewel Action and Rue De Kahn ($10.90) before taking the lead in the final straight to win in 29.58. Ritza Hattie finished a length in front of a gallant Rue De Kahn, with Queenslander Farmer’s Gold ($15.30) making up huge ground late - coming from near last to be a further quarter of a length in third. Zipping Willow, the odds-on favourite, could not get into the race after a tardy beginning and finished in fifth. The win took Ritza Hattie’s career record to 17 wins from 41 starts. It was also her fourth Group race win, having previously won the Group 2 Sandown Laurels and the Group 3 Nowra Spring Puppy Classic in 2013 and the Group 3 Sprint Series at Wentworth Park in 2014. The daughter of Bombastic Shiraz also finished second to Tommy

Brislane in last year’s Group 1 Sportingbet Megastar at Dapto. Like the Megastar, the Gosford Gold Cup was a leg of the new Thank Dog It’s Friday series which showcases the best provincial racing in NSW in a primetime Friday night slot. As such, a great crowd was trackside to witness what was a terrific night’s racing. In other results, the Anthony Azzoparditrained My Boy Snoop caused an upset when he took out the Gosford Cup Consolation, while the Ian Morgan-trained Raramuri came within 0.03 seconds of Dusty Moonshine’s 731m Gosford track record to win the night’s staying event. After the placings the field finished in the following order 4th Jewel Action ($11.00), 5th Zipping Willow ($1.70), 6th Magic Display ($26.00) 7th Zipping Angel ($21.00) and Are Jip ($7.00) fell. Ritza Hattie is raced and trained by Mark Gatt at Thirlmere in New South Wales, she is a Black bitch whelped November 2011 by Bombastic Shiraz from Midnight Flare (Spiral Nikita x Midnight Drama). Ritza Hattie has won 17 and

been placed 20 times from her 41 starts and with the $40,000 first prize for the Gosford Cup it took her current stake earnings to $226,765. The greyhound industry is fortunate to have such a generous sponsor as greyhound lover, owner and trainer Laurie Refalo, the owner of Woy Woy Poultry Supplies. Not only does his company Woy Woy Poultry Supplies sponsor The Gosford Cup ($40,000 to the winner) but also the Gardens Young Guns ($10,000 to the winner). The Gosford Cup became the club’s feature race for the year when they changed their surface to loam in 2003. At the same time a circuit of NSW Country Cups was started. It was a Group three race worth $10,000 to the winner to start with and has risen in status and profile to Group two in 2006 and in 2007 prizemoney increased to $40,000 to the winner. Loyal sponsors Woy Woy Poultry Supplies has being with the race in all of its 13 years.

New product gave Shadow some spark An interesting product came across the Chase Editor’s desk this week – Vita Might 2 Nourish. The makers of the greyhound supplement have advertised in this month’s edition and the promotional material around it sparked a phone call to company director Philip Seletto. It turns out his family company, based in Brighton, Victoria, has been involved in farm animal nutrients for more than 30 years and the path from cattle and sheep to greyhounds is an interesting one.

About three years ago Philip had produced a new supplement for calves. He then began thinking about adapting this product to one suitable for working dogs. His ‘guinea pig’ turned out to be his beloved, but old, farm dog Shadow. Shadow had been a family pet and working dog for many years, but age was taking its toll. However the new supplement gave Shadow a new lease on life. And as the supplement was adapted to canines so to came the interest from greyhound owners and trainers.

The product specifically for greyhounds has only been on the market for a few months and Philip says he has received unanimous ‘positive plus’ results. “The most common comment we get is: ‘Finally we have a supplement that gives all the required elements and nutrients in the one product’.” Chase does not endorse, or not endorse, this product but we are always on the lookout for innovations that the industry may find of interest.

A flashback to the ‘Class on the Grass’ mantra that was Casino.

Work is on track for the new surface to host Casino’s first meeting on sand on February 27

Casino Greyhound Club’s new catchcry:

Grand on Sand PAT McLEOD It used to be ‘Class on the Grass’, but in just a few short weeks Casino Greyhound Racing Club will be celebrating it’s ‘Grand in Sand’. When Chase checked in with Casino club

manager Ron Herd just before going to print, he reported that everything was on schedule for the new loam track to be up and racing for the gala opening on Friday, February 27. “We have lost a few days because of rain, but that was planned for. And in fact on those days we were doing other work that wasn’t really affected by the wet,” he said. “Everything is going exceptionally well and already the surrounds look exceptional. The sand

should be on in the first week of February; the work should be finished in the second week and trialling should be starting on Monday, February 16.” Herd said the $800,000 transformation from a grass to a sand racing surface would have huge benefits for the club. Casino would now fall in line with all other TAB clubs in NSW, the track would be able to be used a lot more for trials, it would be far less

effected by the weather and in fact would possibly pick up meetings from wash-outs at other tracks. “I have no doubt we will attract a better class of greyhound, now that we are on sand,” said Herd. “I am already fielding calls from trainers about trialling. The boxes are in the same place, but I think everyone will be really happy with how the re-development has come along. “I am very excited to start racing again.”

Wes retires, Dark Vito surprises BRENNAN RYAN The 62nd Group 3 Devonport Cup was run and won in an exciting fashion, back in early January. With the 2015 edition held at the Devonport showgrounds, this race has been won by such top sprinters as Shantung Tiger (1997), Awesome Cole (2004), Big Moose (2008), Gardam Prince (2010), St. Pierre (2011), Rewind (2012) and Are Ate (2014). The two-week series attracted two interstate trainers in Kelly Bravo and Craig Davies, who had both brought some quality chasers to compete. Meanwhile, Tasmania was well represented by trainers Edward Medhurst, Anthony Bullock, Gary Fahey, Gary Johnson, Robin Grubb and Butch Deverell. It had been quite a roller-coaster weekend for leading Tasmanian trainer Edward Medhurst, with the retirement of his superstar Buckle Up Wes. After dropping his back muscle in a heat of the Ladbrokes Paws of Thunder, the 55-year-old had no other choice but to end what has been a fantastic career for the Apple Isle’s most popular greyhound. Reports confirm that the son of Collision – Everlong Bale will stand at stud, with details yet to be released. Meanwhile it came to Devonport’s biggest event on the calendar…..THE CUP. Medhurst would put the polish to his best finalists with Dark Vito and Prescribe, just three days later. Both had respectively won their heats, with Prescribe clocking the fastest of the seven heats in the time of 25.33sec. Dark Vito would clock in the winning time of 25.37sec. 2015 Group 3 Dowling McCarthy Hankook Tyres Devonport Cup (452m) Box Draw: (1)

Her Highness (Kelly Bravo), (2) Dark Vito (Edward Medhurst), (3) Pipstar (Robin Grubb), (4) Breaker’s Tip (Gary Fahey), (5) Prescribe (Edward Medhurst), (6) Bruny Venture (Gary Fahey), (7) Rip And Tear (Gary Fahey), (8) Senor Slamma (Gary Johnson). Recording the new race record time of 25.25sec, Dark Vito would claim the $25,000 to-the-winner by scoring by a length to Senor Slamma (El Grand Senor – Tequila Mail) and Prescribe (St. Pierre – Wongawilli Wala) in third. The race record formerly stood with the Morris

Strickland-trained Rewind in 25.31sec. The win by the son of Collision – Carlita Bale gives Edward Medhurst his third Devonport Cup, with the other two wins by Blazenka’s Flyer (1990) & Supa Instinct (2005). Dark Vito is raced in Partnership by Debbie Cannan and Ian Sewell, with Ian already tasting group race success with Ralph The Mouth in the Group One Hobart Thousand back in 2005. Medhurst has had quite high opinions of Dark Vito. “I have always had a good opinion of this dog

and since he recovered from a virus he has gone ahead in leaps and bounds,” Medhurst said. “This is his sixth win in a row and that’s what only good dogs can do. Medhurst said Dark Vito is unlikely to reach the heights of Buckle Up Wes but he said the dog might be capable of winning at Group 1 level. “He has impeccable manners and he is a very keen chaser so we can only hope that he matures into a top class sprinter,” he said.

Warragul Cup career high for trainer By GRV Marketing Dept Ronray Spirit provided trainer Terry Reid with his biggest thrill in greyhound racing winning the recent Group 2 Lion Quality Products Warragul Cup.

Post Box takes out the 2015 Cairns Greyhound Racing Club New Year’s Cup (544m)

Hickmott rings in New Year in style Brennan Ryan wraps up greyhound racing in North Queensland We’re Back….welcome to 2015 for greyhound racing in the north, unfortunately it’s not good for Townsville. The years started with the Townsville showgrounds circuit under work repairs. During that period most of the local-based trainers had made the decision to race at Cannon Park in Cairns over the last few weekends. The first meeting for 2015 was to be held on Sunday 4th January, with the eight race program highlighted by the 2015 C.G.R.C New

Year’s Cup (544m). Due to heavy rain this was moved to the Tuesday night. The 2015 C.G.R.C New Year’s Cup (544m) Box Draw: (1) Not Salty, (2) Saltwater Blue, (3) Post Box, (4) Knock The Top, (6) Railroad Rocket, (7) Starzar Gold, (8) Scotch Magic. In-form Bluewater-based chaser Post Box had continued his winning form to take out the $560 to-the-winner final. Completing 2014 in style by taking out the Lord Mayors Trophy, the Michael Hickmotttrained greyhound had recorded his third win at his sixth start over the track and distance. Raced

by Philip Thompson, the son of Fear Zafonic – You Can Too had scored by 5 ¼ lengths to Starzar Gold (7) (Allan Metcalfe) and Railroad Rocket (6) (Robert Lound) in third. It was the greyhounds’ tenth win from forty-seven starts, along with a prizemoney total of $9,570. Post Box’s feature race CV has recorded a C.G.R.C New Year’s Cup (544m), TCC Lord Mayors Trophy (498m), North Qld Cup (498m) and the T.G.R.C Anniversary Trophy (498m). The official race time was 31.99sec, which is well outside Post Box’s personal best of 31.77sec over the 544m.

Olsen continues northern domination Trainer Glen Olsen has continued his winning success at Cairns’ Cannon Park by taking out three of the eight races on a recent program. Starting off for what was to be a great night for the kennel, promising pup White Ant had continued its love affair with the track, by notching one hundredth of a second off its personal best from 23.78sec to 23.77sec. Raced and prepared by Olsen, the daughter of Fear Zafonic – Terrific Style had scored by 11 lengths to Hez No Good (2) and Hank Snow (1) in third. It was the greyhounds’ second win from start number five. The Gary Heath-owned Elkington had recorded its first career win from its third appearance at the Cannon Park circuit.

The son of Surf Lorian – Tokay Siyan had scored by a half-length to the David Wolfindentrained Miss Denmark (8), along with the winning time of 24.15sec. The third and final leg to Glen’s big night, had seen Divvy Up add to her massive winning streak of five wins at both Cairns and Townsville. Raced by Olsen’s wife Yvonne, the daughter of Fear Zafonic – Tad Smarter had scored by three and a half lengths to Thinner (8) and Shake Your Booty (7) in third. It was the greyhounds’ seventeenth win from forty-five starts

Cannon Park double for Shafer

Garbutt-based trainer Jay Shafer completed a winning double at Cairns’ Cannon Park on a

recent Sunday night. Starting with Edge ‘Em Out, who had broken its maiden class status over the 410m, also started at the bookmaker’s price of $2.20fav. Raced by Bradley Woods, the son of Dyna Lachlan – Miss Intimidate had scored by 5 ½ lengths to Tokalon Hotshot (3) and Selfie (4) in third. It was the greyhounds’ first career win from four starts. Var Monte Carlo (Lochinvar Marlow – Wiggle Dooley) was the second and final winner on the night, recording a 24.41sec victory from box three, to take out the Jeff Puzutti, 410m 5th Grade. Raced by the Jac Syndicate, it was the greyhounds’ fourth win from thirty-two starts.

Reid, whose father Peter Reid is a hall of fame trainer, has been involved in greyhound racing his entire life with this triumph the best of his career. “I’m over the moon, I haven’t had a thrill like that in ages. It’s probably the greatest thrill I’ve had in the sport,” an elated Reid said after the race. “It is really special to me (winning the Warragul Cup), I spent most of my early life in Gippsland. We’d drive from Murrumbeena, which is where Dad trained his greyhounds. “When I got a driver’s license Warragul moved to Friday nights and I’d be up here (at the track) until the trials had finished. “I was 35 years old before I realised that you could go home before the last trial had finished,” he laughed. Reid believes that early speed is his greyhound’s best attribute but having a greyhound that wants to run to the fence - Narralee - in box seven for the final helped his cause because it provided extra room early in the race. The son of Cosmic Rumble and Ronray Disco has spent most of his career in New South Wales. His Warragul Cup victory was made possible because of a strong friendship and some masterful placement. “A very good friend of mine, Ray Steel, trained him in Sydney and the dog was flying and he rang me and said ‘look, I’ll send him down for the Shepparton Cup’, Terry recalls. “When he won at Ballarat in 24.94 (seconds) I said why don’t we go to the Warragul Cup and he said ‘you’re in charge, you’re the trainer do whatever you like’. “So we’re here, we won and we’re just over the moon.” Ronray Spirit (box eight – $8.00) beat $1.80 favourite Luca Neveelk (box one) who missed the start but powered through the field while Ride The Rails (box four – $4.10) produced an outstanding run to finish third after being near the rear of the field. The talented chaser will be targeted at the Shepparton Cup with the heats of that race to be run on Monday 2 February. Ronray Spirit’s career record now stands at 11 wins and four placings from 19 career starts with the $45,000 first-prize taking his career earnings to $59,000. Ronray Spirit is a Black dog whelped December 2012 by Cosmic Rumble from Ronray Disco (Bombastic Shiraz x Ronray Lass). He is raced by Ray & Irena Steel and trained by Terry Reid at Yuroke in Victoria. He has now won 11 races and been placed on four occasions from his 19 starts. The Warragul Cup first prize of $45,000 brings Ronray Spirit’s overall prizemoney to $59,645. After the placed runners the field finished in the following order Big Ticket ($17.50), Jubilea Bale ($39.60), Caustic Bale ($7.70), Narralee ($31.80) and Sisco Rage ($65.80).

The Ladbrokes Park greyhound racing track at Lismore is officially opened. Lismore races ahead “

What is even more pleasing is what this sponsorship will do for the club and the sport of greyhound racing

PAT McLEOD Lisa Vanderstok says it was the ‘best night since I have been here’.

The Lismore greyhound club manager has been in that role for four years, so the unveiling of the track’s new name – Ladbrokes Park – late last

month must have been quite an occasion. There were dignitaries from the political world, greyhound racing, Ladbrokes and of course plenty of locals on track for the official unveiling. “The night went like clockwork,” said an obviously pleased Vanderstok. “But what is even more pleasing is what this sponsorship will do for the club and the sport of greyhound racing.

“It is a significant five-figure amount each year for three years. “Initially this will help with repair and maintenance costs around the track. We want the regulars to keep coming back and we also want new faces to the sport. “The aim is to offer an entertainment package that equals any other night out in this region. We believe greyhound racing can offer that. So this

Northern Rivers GBOTA area manager Joe Cotroneo celebrates his birthday on the night with wife Dianne and family.

sponsorship will really help us lift the profile of greyhound racing. “I think it was significant that one of the speakers at the opening remarked how an international company, such as Ladbrokes, was willing to invest in this club. It gives us a great deal of confidence in the future.”

The first winning honours on the newly named track went to trainer Lee Wylie’s Soccer Ball, handled by Robyn and Ron McCalmer.
