Jersey Jack Lynch Nabs Top Spot
at Omega Billiards Tour Second Stop of 2014 On the weekend of February 22-23, Jersey Jack Lynch claimed the top prize at the second stop of the 2014 Omega Billiards Tour at the Billiard Den in Richardson, TX. Jersey captured that first place spot by winning through a tough field of 80 players! Over $9,500 was given out in monies and prizes that weekend! (Tourney payouts + prizes + player’s auction.) After a bye, Jersey defeated David Josephson 7-5, then end-of-season-champ, Anthony Shea 7-4, then Steve Raynes and Kenny Rowell 7-5 each to meet newcomer Frankie Juarbe. Jersey would defeat Frankie hill-hill – another close match - to meet up with another newcomer to the tour, Steve Collins, in the hotseat Steve Collins made his way to the hotseat with a first round bye, then wins over Jeff Georges 6-3, Linh Nguyen 6-2, Willie Speed 6-2 and then a nail biter 6-7 over David Gutierrez to meet Jersey in the hotseat match. David G would go on the one-loss side and defeat birthday boy Steve Raynes 9-5, Frankie Juarbe 9-2 then Nick Conner 9-6. Jersey was doing damage in the hosteast match
and won over Steve Collins 7-2 which pitted Steve Collins and David against each other on the oneloss side for the semi-finals. Steve Collins would win hill-hill (6-8) over David, which sealed Steve to play a re-match with Jersey Jack in the finals. It was late in the night when the finals started and the first match would go hill-hill! Steve would prevail over Jersey Jack in the first set hill-hill to force a second match in this true double elimination tournament. Jersey wasn’t done though and made a comeback and prevailed with great play and a score of 7-3 to win his first Omega Tour stop!! Jersey earned $925 for First Place and Steve Collins earned $530 for Second Place. David had another great tourney placing 3rd and earned $400 and Nick Conner rounded out the top 4 with $340 for his fine play (payouts do not reflect the Player Auction). Special mention to David “Doc” Reyes and Frankie Juarbe for placing their highest finish yet on the tour: 5th/6th! Congratulations to ALL of the players for their fine play and great finishes! This event was the Omega Billiards Tour’s second stop with $1,500 added with 80 players!! Capture LSBT Spring Event Sylver Ochoa captured his ninth open division title while young gun Joey Torres took home his first-ever title in the amateur division at the Lone Star Spring 9-ball event held March 8th9th, 2014, at Bogies Billiards and Sports Bar in Houston, Texas. Ochoa defeated the renowned Rafael Martinez, 9-7, in the final while Joey Torres came from behind to defeat hot seat winner Erik Renteria two sets, 7-6, and 5-0. There were 71 players competing for over $6,000 in prize money at the second Lone Star stop of 2014. New to the tour, top ten Taiwanese player Kevin Cheng, the “Taiwanese Typhoon”, joined the illustrious, star studded field, but failed to make the cut. The open division yielded little surprise as Manny Chau teed off against Rafael Martinez, and Sylver Ochoa faced off with Danny Lee in the final four, winners’ side. After suffering a 9-1 defeat at the hands of Martinez, Cheng faced off with Chase Rudder, while Ernesto Bayaua battled Bill Fuller. Back on the east side, Martinez defeated Chau, 9-7, while Ochoa dusted off Lee, 9-2. On the west side, Bayaua eliminated Fuller, then Chau, 7-6, while Cheng overcame Rudder, but fell to Lee, 7-6. Ochoa ousted Martinez for the hot seat, 9-3, while Bayaua eliminated Lee, 7-5. Determined to make a comeback, Martinez eliminated Bayaua, 7-5, for a rematch with Ochoa. Steady as ever, in the final match, Ochoa coasted his way to victory, 9-7. There were 49 entries alone in the amateur division which saw Joey Torres lose his fourth round match to Will Felder, 7-6, and come back to win six straight sets, and his division. Danny Roland and Bob Guzik made their way to the final four on the winners’ side along with Will Felder and Erik Renteria. Roland overcame Guzik, 7-6, while Renteria sent Felder west, 7-5. On the east side, Torres was cleaning house. He eliminated Bobby Perez, 5-3, Guzik, 5-2, and Felder, 5-1.

Meanwhile, it was Renteria over Roland for the hot seat, which pitted a first time match-up between Roland and Torres. The match was a coin toss as players traded racks, until Torres pull ahead and ended the battle, 5-4. Torres made his way back to challenge Renteria for the title. In the first race to 7, Renteria missed a crucial 8-ball shot and Torres took full advantage, winning the set, 7-6. The second set was a different story as Torres won the flip and broke. Renteria never made it to the table. Houston semi-pro pool player Belinda Lee captured her first-ever billiard title on March 9th, 2014, when Bogies Billiards and Sports Bar in Houston, Texas hosted the second stop on the WPBA sanctioned, Gulf Coast Women’s Regional 9-ball Tour. Each contesting for their first title, Lee overcame Michelle Yim in the true, double elimination final. Yim closed out the first set, 7-4, but a resilient Lee forged ahead to win the second set, and capture her first title, 7-4. Following Sunday’s player meeting, match play commenced at noon for the one-day, Gulf Coast tour 9-ball event. Players aspiring to reach the pinnacle of female billiard competition (WPBA) turned out to compete for regional tour ranking points, and others, for the sheer opportunity to fine tune their games against some of Texas’ best, female pool talent. Winners’ side action saw Belinda Lee surge to the hot seat with wins over Mercedes Vasquez, 7-5, Bonnie Mason, 7-5, and Tiffany Mundie, 7-4. Michelle Yim blazed her own trail, upsetting Ming Ng, 7-5, and besting Loretta Lindgren, 7-5, to meet Lee for the hot seat. After suffering an early 1st Belinda Lee $200 loss to Lindgren, Teresa Garland 2nd Michelle Yim $115 Michelle Yim, came through the one loss side 3rd Loretta Lindgren $70 Belinda Lee eliminating Nellie Allen and Mundie. On the west side, Lindgren defeated Garland, but fell to Yim, leaving her a respectable third place finish. The finals between Lee and Yim were anything but boring. Shane McMinn took two out of three against Skyler Woodward to capture the Midwest 9-Ball Tour's Bar Table event, held on the weekend of March 8-9. Briana Miller went undefeated to claim the Ladies title. Hosted by Break Billiards in Cahokia, IL, the $2,300-added main event drew 74 entrants, while the $100-added ladies tournament drew 16. McMinn and Woodward met first in the winners' side final. McMinn had survived a double hill match against Chuck Raulston, while Woodward was busy downing Gary Lutman 9-5. Woodward then took the first of his three against McMinn 9-5 and sat in the hot seat to await his return. Raulston and Lutman got right back to work on the loss side. Raulston drew Robert Frost, who'd defeated Anthony Fanning and John Gabriel, both 9-6. Lutman got Brian Daniels, who'd survived a double hill match versus Mike Bergere, and an almost-double-hill match (9-7) against Rich Sager. Raulston defeated Frost 9-6, as Lutman was eliminating Daniels 9-4. Raulston then squeaked by Lutman in the quarterfinals 9-8, before McMinn took him down in the semifinals 9-2. McMinn forced a second set in the finals against Woodward with a 9-6 opening set, and though Woodward would force the second set to a single, deciding game, McMinn hung on to win it. Briana Miller and Julia Gabriel faced each other twice in the ladies event. Miller took the hot seat match 7-3, sending Gabriel to the semifinals and a match against Denise Grady, who'd just survived a double hill battle against Angela Vallair in the quarterfinals. Gabriel won the semifinal matchup against Grady 7-5 and got a second chance against Miller. Miller let Gabriel get two games closer in the finals, one game away from double hill, but she hung in to win it 7-5. 10 page

Chicago Tribune Mar. 17, 2014 Federal prosecutors want jailed TV pitchman Kevin Trudeau sentenced to at least 10 years in prison for repeatedly defying court orders to pay a whopping $37 million fine. With Trudeau scheduled to be sentenced on Monday, prosecutors ripped the infomercial king in a court filing for what they called his “brazen defiance” of federal judges in Chicago over the last decade and accused him of preying on the sick, the poor and the insecure over three decades of fraud and deceit. Trudeau has been jailed since Nov. 12 when he was convicted by a federal jury of criminal contempt for lying in infomercials about the contents of his weight loss book that called for punishing calorie restrictions and a crippling list of food restrictions. Prosecutors said Trudeau has made no payments toward the $37 million fine imposed by the Federal Trade Commission despite continuing to live a lavish lifestyle. One week after U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman ordered him to pay up “forthwith” in June 2010, Trudeau spent more than $4,000 on draperies, prosecutors said. Between mid-2010 and March 2013, Trudeau spent at least $12 million on first-class airfare, gym memberships, trips to the salon, $12,000 cufflinks, a six-figure Bentley automobile and a mansion in suburban Oak Brook and a California residence that cost a combined $15,500 a month, according to the filing Tuesday. Prosecutors urged U.S. District Judge Ronald Guzman, who will impose sentence, to view a televised interview of Trudeau from last year in which they said he acknowledged living a lavish lifestyle and boasted about avoiding paying the $37 million fine. According to the filing, Trudeau sold more than 850,000 copies of “The Weight Loss Cure ‘They’ Don’t Want You to Know About,” bringing in sales of $49 million. Some 57,000 buyers returned the book for a partial refund despite the difficult mechanism to do that, said prosecutors, who laid out a history of fraud by Trudeau that they said dates to the mid-1980s. Trudeau “preys upon the sick who want to be made healthy, the poor who want to become rich, and the insecure who want to feel better about themselves,” prosecutors wrote in the filing. “He exploits consumers’ insecurities and weaknesses, promising them an easy fix for whatever hurts or embarrasses them.” Trudeau’s promises can even be dangerous, said prosecutors, who expect testimony at sentencing from the brother of one man who they said died after he relied on Trudeau’s “Natural Cures” book and stopped taking his heart medication. Prosecutors said Trudeau faces as much as about 20 to 25 years in prison under federal sentencing guidelines but asked Guzman to impose a minimum 10-year sentence.

Most of us have pretty good bridges for getting over a blocking ball – at least when the blocker is not too close to the cueball. But what about when we have to seriously elevate our stick because the balls are close together, and maybe we need some draw? Much, much tougher. Unless you’re really tall, extreme elevation is a challenge. We’ll illustrate two different ways to accomplish extreme elevation and still keep your stick under control: the Press Stroke and the Shoulder Stroke. And yes, it’s even possible to get good draw while frozen to the rail! Part of the difficulty with elevating is keeping your stroke arm in the vertical swing plane. Most players wing their forearm out sideways to get more elevation. But then they can’t really see down their stick, and their tip is moving side to side as they stroke. Problematic. The photos below show two surprising ways to elevate to an extreme, see down your stick, and stroke straight. The Press Stroke requires flexibility and strength. Here are the steps, but once you have it, you can get there in one smooth move: Photo 1: Choke way down on the cue. Stand close to the table, pressing the table with your thigh. Form a high open bridge on the rail. Using the webbing between the thumb and index finger of your grip hand, press the front of the stick down securely into your bridge. Maintain that downward pressure as you bend forward from the waist and raise the back of the stick to get into shooting position. Tuck your bridge elbow to your body as you bend. To raise the butt of the stick, lift the point of your elbow straight up (vertically, not tilted). Unfortunately, we’re not ready to hit yet. Notice how my stroke arm is already fully folded. I have nothing to stroke with. The solution appears in Photo 2. Photo 2: The final move is pretty weird, but it works. To get stroke room for your arm, glide your head down the stick line until your forearm is perpendicular to the stick when the tip is near the cueball. This puts your arm in the proper place to perform an accurate, athletic stroke. Of course, it will seem very strange to have your eyes overtop the cueball, and you will have had to aim well prior to the head move. Don’t try to hold this position for long. You’re using lots of muscle. Finally, stroke and hit

while holding the stick against your chest for greater stability. The Shoulder Stroke is remarkably easy for most players. They’ve just never seen it. Even players with physical limitations like neck pain, stiffness, and lack of flexibility can usually do well with this technique: Photo 3: The beauty of the Shoulder Stroke is that you can stand up straight and comfortably see down most of the length of the stick. The actual stroke is different from the standard, but so is this technique. So what if the method is unconventional? It works, and it’s legal. Stand facing fairly square to the shot. Find a place on your shoulder where the stick can ride pretty smoothly and you can see down it. Make a high bridge. Here’s the key – grip the shaft about halfway between the joint and tip. Hold the stick gently against your shoulder and your bridge by pulling your elbow straight back along the line of your forearm. Find the angle and pulling pressure that allows the stick to stroke smoothly and straight, without slipping around on your shoulder or being loose in your bridge. Stroke with your forearm, right through the cueball like you’re trying to hit the table. On elevated shots like this, most players prefer looking at the cueball during the hit stroke. Notice in Photo 3, I’m taking a half tip of cushion. It’s rubber, after all. I’m going through like it’s not there. Draw off the cushion? Yep, it’s beautiful and it’s easier than you’d think, but it could cost you some “customers.”

He managed to stay away from the hustler life; he doesn’t believe in being dishonest in order to win money. He will, however, occasionally play for a beer or two at the local watering hole. I have been asked many times “what is the best practice routine?” The honest answer to that is “that depends.” And, of course, it’s the truth. Practice and drills are meant to help you hone and refine your problem areas, and make you a better player. Every player has different things to work on, so every player should have their own customized practice routines. But man, can it be boring! Sometimes, just playing a game against other people is what you want to do. The best choice is someone who has the same skill set as you, to give you a good challenge without making you sit in your chair all night. And you want someone who will play whatever game you want to play, right? Sometimes, your best opponent is yourself. That’s why I often recommend people play the Ghost. Playing the Ghost is a good tool to add to your practice routines. Practice can be quite boring sometimes, and tedious. While I am a strong proponent of working on your fundamentals, identifying problem areas, and working them out, I also believe that pool is supposed to be fun. So, it’s good to mix up your practice routines, and this is an excellent way to challenge yourself. If you are an intermediate or advanced player, then you probably already know how to play the ghost. You may skip to the optional variations outlined further down. So, what is the Ghost? The Ghost is an imaginary player. You are going to pit yourself against this player, and attempt to beat him. If you can do this, you will be able to beat almost anyone you play! So how does the Ghost play? Perfectly. Yes, that’s right. The Ghost never misses. If you
miss a shot during your turn, you assume the Ghost will run the table and beat you. Therefore, if you miss, you lose! Sounds terrible, doesn’t it? It’s not so bad. There are “conditions.” Here’s how to play against the Ghost: Set up your game of choice. Playing the Ghost works for almost any game. Break the balls the best you can. Do not worry if any balls go in or not, or even if you scratch. From this point, you have ball-in-hand. Put the cue ball anywhere you like, and try to run the table. If you run out, you win. If you don’t, the Ghost wins. Score accordingly, and re-rack. Play to a predetermined number of wins (I usually do a race to 5). When either you or the Ghost wins the match, start over at 0-0. That’s it! The wonderful thing about playing the Ghost is that it puts tournament-level pressure on you, helping you to learn to focus on your shots. And you get to do this while playing a real game, instead of just setting up practice drills. Good Luck! “Wait! Michael! I can’t beat the Ghost! I can’t run out a rack of (9-ball/8-ball/Straight pool). How do I play the Ghost if he always beats me?” Ah. Good point. That brings us to: Variations If you like, there are ways to vary the rules a bit. Here are a few suggestions, but the list is by no means exhaustive. After a certain point in your development as a pool player, improving your position skills will yield the fastest improvement in your game. Without the ability to move the cue ball to a reasonable angle for the next shot, your runs will end quickly. The basic skills of speed control and changing the cue ball’s deflection off the object ball with draw and follow are easy to understand and very basic drills like the progressive practice drills I’ve mentioned before will let you develop your technique with simple set positions. Add to that a little feel for how to use side spin on the cushions and a feel for how to adjust your aim for such shots, and you are ready for some more realistic position problems. I think the drill shown here is the best way to learn and extend cue ball control for intermediate players. I call it the “A2B Drill” since the point is to get from A to B. It is a lot like a practice tool called “Target Pool” which was great for training but is no longer made. (A demonstration of the A2B drill is available in the DVD series “Video Encyclopedia of Pool Practice” that I developed with Dr. Dave Alciatore.) The first part of the drill is to choose two points, A and B. You can do this in lots of ways including breaking nine ball and taking two ball positions as A and B or by drawing cards from a deck after assigning locations to each card. Shown in the diagram is one of many possible choices. Mark the points with chalk or stick-on donuts. The B target could be a cut-out circle the size of a ball or a larger bull’s-eye target as is used in Target Pool. For each shot, place the object ball at A and take cue ball in hand. You also need to pick a pocket for the shot, one of which is demonstrated in the diagram. The goal is to pocket the ball and leave the cue ball “pretty close” to B. The margin of error you give yourself is up to you, but always try to leave the cue ball exactly on B. Within three to five shots you should be able get a good if not perfect result. If a shot has you stumped, move on and come back to it later. In the diagram, the cue ball is about at the limit for playing a soft draw shot from A to B. Any thinner and either you won’t be able to get enough draw to curve the path of the cue ball back to B or the cue ball will go to far if you shoot hard enough to get the object ball to the pocket. The cue ball shown at X is at the other extreme with a nearly straight shot. You will need a lot of power and not much draw to move the cue ball to B from that position. Somewhere between those two positions

will be a position for the cue ball that will be most comfortable. If you had ball in hand during a game, that would be where you should place the cue for the shot but it’s important to know how to play the cue ball from the two extremes. To continue the drill, try each of the other pockets in turn, always placing the object ball at A and trying to get to B without the cue ball contacting a cushion. Find each “easiest” position and stroke and then see how much you can vary from that and still get position. For example, when playing to pocket G straight draw is the only solution but you can vary your speed and amount of draw. Next time we’ll look at using cushions with this same drill.

Viper: Where were you born? Joey: Oklahoma City Oklahoma Viper: What are your biggest accomplishments in the sport of billiards? Joey: Runner-up champion in the Derby City Classic One-Pocket championships. I have won numerous Midwest NineBall titles including some One-Pocket titles to my credit. As well as multiple Oklahoma 8-Ball and 9-Ball State Championships. Viper: Do you have a nickname yet? Joey: Mighty Joe Young Viper: What are your short-term goals? Joey: Recently trying to make the American Mosconi Cup team, as well as gain more rotation titles. Viper: What do you do when you’re not competing? Joey: I love to run long distance, especially marathons which are 26.2 miles. I love golf and spending time with my close friends and family. Viper: Do you have siblings? Joey: As far as family goes; I have 3 sisters and 1 brother. Viper: Who got you started in playing pool? Joey: I had a few friends in elementary school whose parents had a pool table and I would go there from time to time and play. Once I started improving I would go to the local poolroom and met some good pool players who really helped me out a lot. I give credit to Bobby Baldwin from Tulsa, OK and James Walden getting me started, and once I met my best friends and incredible players Chip Compton, Tyler Strawn and Shane McMinn, whom we all fed off of each other and that’s mainly how I improved. Viper: What do your parents think of
your pool career? Joey: They were very skeptical at first but once they saw my talent they truly approved and supported me in my mission to be great. Viper: In your opinion, what parts of the world produce the best players? Joey: Of course the Philippines, but recently I have been paying attention to the Taiwanese players who have incredible work ethic and I respect that. Viper: Who is/was your favorite pro player growing up? Joey: I liked watching Michael Coltrain play a lot, but being around James Walden in his prime was a sight to see. Viper: Do you currently have any sponsors? Joey: Mike Durbin custom cues, Jamaica Joes poolroom in Midwest City, OK and John Barton cue cases. Viper: Did you ever play in a pool league? Joey: BCA pool leagues. Viper: Are you good at any other sports? Joey: I was real good at soccer in high school. The past 7 years I’ve run 4 marathons. I’m also an avid golf player. Viper: Describe yourself in three words? Joey: Fun, determined and disciplined. Viper: If you had to live your life over again, what would one thing you change about yourself and/or your pool career? Anthony Beeler is a 2013 BCA National 9-Ball team champion. He also finished 9th out of 1086 players in the 2013 BCA National 8-Ball Championships. He is a certified Level 3 instructor for the American CueSports Alliance and is the founder of Maximize Your Potential Billiards Academy located in Bradfordsville, Kentucky. Beeler is also a fully licensed Kentucky Educator having, received his bachelor’s degree at Campbellsville University and his master’s degree in Education Leadership at Eastern Kentucky University. Throughout his poolplaying career Anthony has won over 300 tournaments and has defeated numerous professional players in tournament competition.

During the early 1990’s I spent a lot of time at JR’s Pool Room in Lancaster, Kentucky. I guess you could say I got a pool hall degree (PhD) there. I learned offensive play, but also a lot of defensive 8-ball strategy. In fact, I can recall when Florida native David Favor visited our billiard room. Favor was strong road player that displayed powerful offensive skills. One Friday night he entered our weekly 8-ball tournament. The fields were always tough but Favor added
remember him running down to his final 3 solids then missing. It was really quite a shock. Jack was left with the layout below. I can remember watching the wheels turn on Jack as he approached the table to return the shot. “Um hmm,” Jack said as he got down to shoot. Jack shot the cue ball slightly below center with a medium speed and played a combination on David’s six-ball, pocketing it, while hooking Favor from hitting his two remaining balls (leaving the cue ball
significant weight to the already formidable field. On a normal Friday night we usually had over 50 players. However, Favor was such a strong offensive threat I wondered how anyone could beat him. As the tournament progressed, Favor ran rack after rack. The competition seemed to be no match for him, but it wasn’t long until he ran into local hero Jack Howe. At that time, Jack was in his mid 60’s, a shorter southern gentleman, balding with dark gray hair. He was very offensive minded but was also a sharp cookie when it came to defensive play. I knew if anyone could beat Favor it had to be Jack. He had won more big 8-ball tournaments than anyone I knew. To most people Jack looked very unintimidating. However, I knew he had the heart of a lion, and it definitely was going to take someone ferocious to take Favor down. Favor broke the balls in the final game of the tournament. I can

Several questions came to mind as I pondered the situation. However, after carefully scrutinizing the result, I realized that Jack had completely eliminated any opportunity for David to pocket the six-ball or use it to breakout the troublesome cluster located near the end rail. It really was a brilliant move. David had no choice but to kick at his two remaining balls and pray for luck. However, this wasn’t the case. David missed the kick shot and Jack quietly pocketed his remaining balls to win the championship. After the tournament was over Jack went to the tournament director Wanda Renner, to collect his tournament winnings. If I recall, Jack won around $450.00 for 1st place. However, Jack didn’t take half of his self in the Calcutta. A man that was around 40 years old bought Jack and won nearly $800.00 from the auction. The man tipped Jack $100.00 for winning the tournament. I will never forget what Jack told me after being tipped. He said, “It sure was nice of that old man to give me a $100.00 tip!” It was obvious that Jack was 20 years older than the guy that bought him and I was shocked by the comment. I remember telling Jack “You think he is an old man?” He said, “Yes, I may be over 60 but I think like a 30 year old!” Always remember to look for ways to eliminate your opponent’s options. Sometimes pocketing your opponent’s ball may be the best solution. Jack was a master of defensive strategy and over several year’s I learned from watching the best. To this day, I owe a great deal of my 8-ball knowledge to Jack Howe, a true southern gentleman.

HAVE YOU EVER LOST BEFORE ?
You can always walk away learning something from a loss and that doesn’t make you a loser. I was recently at a tournament, with a lot of good players. A friend of mine had commented that during one of his matches that he’d beat a well known national champion during this tournament and he had done it pretty handedly. He walked over to shake his hand and told him “good play”. The person didn’t respond, was kind of moody and arrogant about it, being down from his loss I’m sure. My friend is somewhat outspoken and he just proposed a question to him, “Have you ever lost before?” The gentleman looked at him a little befuddled and said, “Well, yes”. My friend’s comment was to the point, “Then act like it!”, which in my opinion speaks volumes. We all like to win and we all lose but you’ve got to realize also that you’re probably going to do more losing throughout a years time than winning. It’s like any other sport, the batting average of any major league player is good if it’s 33%. So you figure if you lose a lot there has to be something to be gained from that loss. You can approach it in several different ways. You can become moody, arrogant, don’t want to talk to anybody, kind of brood about it. That is not very productive. We all tend to go over any game or any match we have lost to figure out perhaps where the turn around was, what we did. What we missed and how we could have done anything different. I know I have many times. If you walk away from a match after a loss and you’ve learned something from that, perhaps what not to do next time, then you gain. If we walk away with an attitude and figure, “Well, I’m just not on today”, “I’m

not in stroke”, “The other guy was lucky”, that may be true. The greatest part of this game is that you learn and you keep learning. I don’t care if it’s Earl Strickland or if it’s some average barroom player. You should learn from your mistakes or your losses. I like to watch opponents. Not necessarily opponents of mine but other opponents that I’ll meet some other time, on the road or even a little bit later in the tournament. I find their weaknesses so I can capitalize on my strengths. There’s many avenues that you can take to improve your game. Practice is only one of them, but to know the weaknesses of your opponents is a very crucial one. You can also learn from the mental attitude of an opponent. How he or she reacts in certain situations. If you play a lot of safeties that you don’t need to. You’re not in stroke. You’re on your ‘B’ game - so play a ‘B’ game. You run a couple and you duck and hide. Just one example that can be used. I’ve won a lot of games and many matches using the philosophy “Play to the level that you’re playing today”. Don’t think about how great you were. Don’t think about how great you could be. Think about how you are playing today and adapt. That’s what it’s about, it’s adapting to conditions that you’re playing. We all get bad rolls. We all get unlucky, but we all get lucky as well. We all get good rolls. That’s not saying that they average out but utilize how you play at the time you’re playing. Just because you lost doesn’t make you a loser. There’s always another match and another day. Revenge is always one of the best reasons for winning.

TAP RALLY TAP, Pools Amateur Tour held their Rally in Edison, NJ Dream Team and Singles competitions in conjunction with Allen Hopkins’ Productions Super Billiards Expo. Players from the USA and Canada came to The New Jersey Expo Center, which hosted the largest TAP event and the largest consumer oriented billiards trade-show in the world.

This 18th Annual Rally Event for TAP, Pools Amateur Tour kicked off with Registration into the event starting Wednesday night. Thursday morning the TAP National Meeting was held at the Sheraton in Edison in which TAP Licensees all met with the corporate office of TAP to go over all the new and exciting things TAP is going to bring to the player in 2014. Thursday afternoon, TAP’s Corporate office, the Schonter family and the TAP Family of Licensees and Players showed their respects to their beloved Founder and CEO Loyd Schonter, with a speech given by Kristen Schonter, Loyd’s Wife and TAP CAO and Celeste Schonter, Loyd’s Sister and TAP CAO. A slideshow memorialized the life of Mr. Schonter from his childhood, family, Kristen and his family, the start of TAP and the many years following with his management team, staff and licensees throughout the years, industry leaders of which he had relationships with, and the last event the TAP Nationals in Chicago, IL. Many spoke with the memorial coming full circle of the Schonters, Kristen, Celeste and Chuck dedicating and declaring the TAP battlecry, we will TAP ON ! Players entered the singles events which kicked off on Thursday night, under the 25th year Anniversary of TAP, which 2014 is. 8 and 9 Ball Dream Team events kicked off the morning of Friday, March 14th with the Round Robin to Single Elimination Format. Winners were awarded starting Friday night in singles events and went through to Sunday in which all events finished up. The twenty-second stop of the 2013-2014 Pure X Cues All American Tour stop – presented by the ACS was produced at Legends Sports Bar in Clinton, IA on Saturday, March 1. The $500-added 8-ball handicapped tourney was conducted on 7-foot Valley bar boxes. The A-side completed with semifinals wins by Al Martin (Clinton, IA) [rated a “5” on a regional rating system used] over Steve Aldrich [5] (Cedar Rapids, IA) 5-2, and Scott Hargens [6] (Cedar Rapids, IA) over Tim Krouse [5] (Clinton, IA) 6-0. In the A-side finals, Martin outplayed Hargens 5-4 to take the hot seat. On the B-side, John Sprague [5] (Albany, IL) eliminated Tim Krouse at 4th place by a 5-4 margin. The B-side finals showcased Scott Hargens ousting Sprague onthe-hill 6-4. The first set of the tourney finals also stayed close, but Martin again prevailed over Hargens 5-4 for the title! By virtue of Scott Hargens being the highest-finishing ACS member in the event, he qualified for a free 9-Ball singles entry into the 2014 Pure X ACS Nationals at the Tropicana Las Vegas. Wilson names USA Squad by: Luke Riches 21st March, 2014 FOLLOWING ON from his appointment in January, 2014 USA PartyPoker Mosconi Cup captain MARK WILSON today names his squad of eight players who will be tasked with winning pool’s most prestigious team trophy for the first time since 2009. Wilson has opted for a blend of experience and youth and his eight-man squad will be reduced down to the five who will travel to Blackpool, England at the end of November to contest the 21st annual Mosconi Cup. Head of the pack and named as one of his two vice-captains is SHANE VAN BOENING, who will be making his eighth appearance in the event. The 30 year-old South Dakota native said, "I have been looking forward to another chance to win in the biggest setting.

Winning is what I am focused on every day, and I want this one more than ever.” Wilson added, “Any reasonable person who was building a new team would look to have Shane to build around given his professionalism and success. Even more importantly, his character and principles are just the thing for new players to emulate. He sets a great example, and I expect to rely on him for leadership this year. “He routinely excels against the strongest players and deepest fields. He exemplifies the work ethic, sportsmanship, and proficiency expected from all members of the team. Team USA could not have a better leader on the table.” Looking to make his second appearance in the Mosconi Cup after being a member of the team that successfully retained the trophy in 2006 is ‘Mr 400’ JOHN SCHMIDT. The 40 year old, now residing in California, is the oldest member of the squad and is thrilled at the prospect, "Being chosen for this Team USA and the chance to play for a Mosconi Cup is the
most humbling experience and the biggest honor of my life." Wilson is delighted to be resurrecting Schmidt’s Mosconi Cup prospects; “I am pleased with what John brings to the table beyond his stellar play. He is passionate about pool and a very approachable person. He is blessed with a keen sense of humor and does not take himself too seriously. He comes up with very thought provoking points for consideration and positive suggestions that will be quite a plus for our team." Looking to make his eighth appearance is Prince of Pool, COREY DEUEL, who is hoping to add to his three Mosconi Cup wins. "The last time that I played was the last time that the US won and I have some new ideas to offer for preparation of this year's team - concepts that I will share with every team member. The Blackpool venue is so inspiring that I can hardly wait for December." The 36 year-old who is also an active snooker player, was an easy choice for the captain; “I felt that he has not only experience but also a youthful exuberance and fresh perspective that were too compelling for him not to be included. I view Corey as a huge asset to our team.” The fourth member of the squad is 30 year-old BRANDON SHUFF who received a Mosconi Cup baptism of fire at the York Hall on his only previous appearance in 2012. "This guy has a ton of heart along with a great work ethic, and will be primed for a great year,” said Wilson. “He puts himself out there by playing many

The first of the potential debutants is the highlyrated JUSTIN HALL, the 26 year-old from Palm Harbor, Florida. "I have known of this kid’s talent and allround skills for years, and now is the time that all of his previous success and experience will make the difference," said Wilson. A proven champion at both banks and one-pocket, Hall is determined to take his chance, “I always wanted to make the Mosconi Cup team, and now that the opportunity is here, I will further intensify my training. I love being under pressure to perform and am looking forward to both the challenge to make the final five, and the opportunity to win on the biggest stage." Another Mosconi Cup veteran hoping to return to the fray is California’s OSCAR DOMINGUEZ, who was part of 2009’s winning team on his only other appearance. "The pinnacle of my career was the 2009 Mosconi Cup victory; it was quite an amazing experience and I am very grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the team in 2014,” said Dominguez. “I'm looking forward to working with Mark Wilson and the seven other great players selected. I feel I'm a better, more seasoned, and smarter player than in 2009 and I am eager to start the preparation for a Mosconi Cup victory in 2014.” Wilson added, "Oscar epitomizes the new face of the sport - positivity, work ethic, passion, and great attitude. I played many times against his father Ernesto, and I knew this kid would be an ideal candidate. Beyond being respectful he is just the kind of guy that I would want by my side in combat.” The second rookie in the squad is 26 year-old JUSTIN BERGMAN who hails from Fairview Heights in Illinois. Justin has many regional victories and one major tournament win in the One Pocket division at the Southern Classic in 2012.

"Justin has been a good player since childhood; able to break and run out a rack on a 9' table since he was just 11 years-old. Given his recent form he will generate some real excitement and quite possibly shake up the pool hierarchy,” said Mark Wilson. Bergman added, "I have only dreamed of ever making Team USA and going to the Mosconi Cup. I have been very dedicated the last couple of years and feel that I am improving and getting results. This is the next step." The final piece in the Team USA jigsaw puzzle is Connecticut-based rookie JEREMY SOSSEI. One of the strongest players in the northeast, he has many regional tournament victories, and strong showings against some of the best players in the world. Wilson commented, "Jeremy is a solid candidate that tends to let his cue do the talking. I feel that he may have been overlooked in the past and I am thrilled to have him as a team member. He will contribute a great deal to the US effort in 2014." The 34 year-old said, "Getting the call to possibly represent the USA in the Mosconi Cup has been a dream come true. I'm ecstatic! I've been working hard on my game the last couple of years and I believe I'm ready. With team work we can get the Cup back." As well as Shane Van Boening, Mark Wilson has named DON WARDELL MD as his second ViceCaptain. The 60 year-old is a practicing physician with a passion for billiards. Wardell has a strong interest in billiards history, sports medicine, training techniques, and biomechanics. He will be assisting Mark Wilson throughout the preparation over the coming months as well as in Blackpool when the event gets underway. The 7th Annual Andy Cloth Wyoming Open consists of 3 Pro Events as well as 3 Divisions for amateurs. Morris has already won 2 of the 3 tournaments including a whitewashing of USA’s #1 Shane Van Boening. The 3 day Rocky Mountain pool extravaganza is taking place now and is widely considered to be the most anticipated tournament that players in this part of America looks forward to each year. Event promoter E.J. Glode manages to bring players of all levels nationwide to Saratoga, including some of the biggest names in the sport. The event is co-promoted by Dragon Promotions and is renowned to be the biggest pool event in the state drawing over 150 players. From beginner, intermediate, expert and pro/open level tournaments will all be available. The event is sponsored by widely popular Andy Cloth, Pechauer Cues, and Master Chalk. E J GLODE In the 10-Ball Masters, Morris took down Charlie Williams 6-4 in the opening match, and then defeated his next three opponents including Spain’s Marc Vidal. It now came down to the reigning US Open 10-Ball Champion vs the reigning US Open 9-Ball Champion. Facing Van Boening who earlier eliminated Mexico’s new champion Ruben Bautista, Morris was just too hot to handle as he blanked Shane 6-0 for the title. In the game of Saratoga which combines 8-Ball and 9-Ball together, Morris went undefeated until he ran into Ruben Bautista who defeated him. Deuel was taking to the new game well as he defeated Charlie Williams and eventually Van Boening in the hot seat. Morris cameback with a vengeance on the one loss side and avenged himself against Bautista, defeated Van Boening again, and then edged Deuel in the finals 9-7 to win the second event in a row. Today will be the final day and it comes down to the 8-Ball Division of the Andy Cloth Wyoming Open. Can Morris win all 3 events? We will soon see!

CSI NEWS Live Streaming & Video Capability
CueSports International, Henderson, Nevada (March 6, 2014) – CSI is proud to announce that it will begin live streaming its own events, Podcasts, challenge matches, instructional content, and much more. Previously, live streaming and video recording of CSI content was done by The Action Report (TAR) as a collaborative effort with CSI. Moving forward, this will be an internal capability. CAN ANYONE PLAY IN THE BCAPL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS?
Recently, CSI has received a repeat question – can anyone play in the BCA Pool League (BCAPL) National Championships? The answer is a definite YES! There is a general misconception that a person must be in a BCAPL league in order to compete in the National Championships. This is false. Anyone can purchase a “Player Membership” for just $25 and be eligible to compete in various singles and doubles events depending on their BCAPL ranking.

In an effort to provide more opportunities for all players CSI has added a new event, the 10-Ball Challenge, to the BCAPL National Championships schedule! By adding this event, there are now three back-to-back events that are open to everyone! Each of these are played on 7-foot tables. 9-Ball Challenge: July 16-17, double elimination, race to 7, $135 entry 10-Ball Challenge: July 18-19, double elimination, race to 7, $135 entry Grandmaster 8-Ball: July 20-22, double elimination, race to 9, $235 entry

Viper: How do you prepare for events? Joey: I love to run to clear my head and practice constantly. Also competing with my best friend Chip Compton helps a lot. Viper: What was the best advice you were ever given? Joey: You have to be got in order to get. Viper: What is one thing that you enjoy most while playing pool? however. This is supposed to be a challenge. Break fewer balls. Instead of a full 8-ball rack, rack a 9-ball version of the game (4 solids, 4 stripes, 8-ball). Instead of a 9-ball rack, rack 7 balls (standard 7-ball rack). After each shot, allow yourself to move the cue ball one hand-span in any direction. If that is too easy, only allow yourself to do this once or twice. Allow a certain number of misses. This downgrades the Ghost to a lower level player, essentially. I don’t really like this variation, but some people enjoy it. Allow yourself to take ball in hand one time during the course of your run-out. However, if you miss or foul, you still lose. Are you a straight pool player? Instead of a loss, give yourself a penalty for every miss. For example, during a race to 100, when you miss, the Ghost gets 10 balls. Essentially, you are playing a game of single-player straight pool, with 9 allowed misses. Giving the Ghost points, however, adds an element of pressure that forces you to concentrate. simply keep track of your misses, and play a set of 5 racks. Your total number of misses becomes your “handicap,” much like golf. Over time, your goal is to reduce that number. Compare with your friends to see who is the best! There are other ways to challenge yourself than playing the Ghost, of course. One of my favorites is Fargo (http:// tinyurl.com/fargorules). Playing the Ghost is a very aggressive form of pool, and it doesn’t work on every aspect of your game. It doesn’t allow for the incorporation of safeties, for example. But it does take some of the tedium out of your practice sessions. Pool is supposed to be fun. Unless you are a professional, practicing 8 hours per day, you are most likely not going to enjoy shooting 500 straight shots in a row. You want to play a game, and challenge yourself. Playing the Ghost is a great way to challenge yourself, set goals, and still enjoy your billiards game of choice. just smash the hell out of the balls, hoping something would drop. And many times, they did. But the most successful players understood where the balls were going, controlled their cue ball, and played clean, precise pool. Congratulations to Justin Bergman for being the cleanest and most precise, and winning the tournament. It was an incredible display of amazing 9-ball.
