The Psychology of Pool PLAYING YOUR BEST POOL: WALK THE WALK

DR. CHRIS STANKOVICH Dr. Chris Stankovich, known as “The Sports Doc,” is a national expert in the field of sport & performance psychology and has been featured on ESPN for his work with elite athletes. His #1 best selling pool video “Mind of Steel: Mental Toughness for Pool Success” has been used by thousands of players to improve focus, increase confidence, and eliminate anxiety. You can learn more about Dr Stankovich and Mind of Steel by visiting drstankovich.com

I regularly work with athletes to help them develop their mental toughness and ultimately play their best, and as you might imagine confidence plays a big role in this process. By being confident this does not mean being “cocky,” but instead suggests that you truly believe that on any given day on any given rack YOU, not the opponent, can come out victorious. In fact, countless sport psychology studies have shown for years that the more confident you are, the better you will perform – making it vitally important you develop your self-confidence! By feeling confident your body will follow suit by being more relaxed, better focused, and you will actually “see” more shots on the table as a result. Interestingly, the way in which you carry yourself will either support this mindset, or crush it, depending on what you do.

MIND OF STEEL MENTAL TOUGHNESS FOR POOL SUCCESS Eliminate nerves & anxiety, beat pressure, and DOMINATE THE COMPETITION!! Streaming in HD on any device 24/7/365

Dr. Chris Stankovich DRSTANKOVICH.CINEVEE.COM OnTheBreakNews.com

For example, if you tell yourself that you really can be the best player in the room your entire body will work in better synchrony, allowing you to casually walk in, warm up, and play your game. On the other hand, if you don’t feel like you have much game, your body will respond by being tight, and you might even give away your nervousness with shaky hands and twitchy body movements that are driven by anxiety. The way your body responds, however, is largely up to the way in which you program it (believe you can or you can’t, but the choice is up to you). When I suggest to “walk the walk,” it really means for you to think through how you want to be perceived by the competition. When you appear to be confident, it often has the exact effect

on the competition – meaning your confidence will likely strike anxiety and fear into their game. In order for you to enter the room at your peak state, consider the following tips: •

Review your goals. Before you go to the pool room take a moment to read through your personal goals (yes, you should set some!), and try to focus on the things you want to achieve today. Be realistic. While you always want to strive to be the best, it is important to play within yourself and focus on the things that are more realistic to happen today. For one player that might be running a single rack, while another player may have realistic expectations of running through a tournament. One game at a time. Yes, this sounds cliché, but how many times have you allowed your thoughts to jump too far ahead and ended up missing an easy shot as a result? Believe it or not, staying in the moment and only focusing on the next shot is a very challenging skill for players to develop – but one very worthwhile to learn. Stick with routines. Your pre-game routine is vitally important toward your success! Learn about the significance of deep breathing, imagery, and positive selftalk to name a few, and develop your own re-game routine that allows you to play with comfort and confidence. Take a timeout. Sometimes when we feel the wheels falling off we simply keep playing, missing shot after shot and only becoming angrier with ourselves after every miss. Why do we do this when we play a game that allows for brief timeouts to re-gather our thoughts?? Sometimes it’s best to step back, breathe, and re-think the table so that you can regain your confidence and composure and still save the rack (and maybe the tournament).

I would like to hear from you. If you have a question for me please submit to: information@drstankovich.com

SHUT UP AND PRACTICE! by Tom Simpson © September 1999 – All Rights Reserved – PoolClinics.com

Tom Simpson

Tom Simpson

November 2017

Most of us don’t have the raw natural talent to become great players without working at it. If you’re good, you practice. If you want to be good, you practice. You won’t be getting better if you’re not practicing. And meanwhile, somebody else, who may beat you in the future, is putting in that practice time.

is hanging in the corner pocket, drawing more accurately, remembering to plan at least three balls ahead, checking where your tip is actually hitting the cueball (vs. what you believe), experimenting with controlling sidespin, jumping, curving, rail shots, kicks, banks, etc. There is enough to keep you engaged for a lifetime.

If you actually want to get better, you’ll make time for practice. 15 minutes of concentrated practice will do more for your game than hours of play.

So, there’s banging balls around the table, and then there’s practice. BCA Master Instructor Jerry Briesath says “Perfect practice makes perfect.” He means you get better not just because you practice, but because you practice the right things, in an effective way. I say “Practice makes permanent.” You have to “burn in” your improvements, or they will fade away.

“OK. I practice. I drill a few straight-ins, shoot a coupla spot shots, try a cross-side bank, and I’m ready to play,” you might say. I’d say this is all useful, but it’s not practice. It’s checking out the equipment and your stroke. Many players practice by throwing a few balls on the table and trying to run them out. Other times, they shoot low percentage shots. This is fun stuff. When you succeed, you look good and feel good. When you fail, well, it was a low percentage shot, what the hey? This type of practice is getting you nowhere. If you only practice what you’re already good at, you’ll look great, but your game will not improve. Practicing what’s easy is too easy. On the other hand, don’t spend your practice time on extremely difficult shots. You’re going to miss them and not know why. You won’t get better, and with all that missing, you won’t be building your confidence. Practicing failure is not a good idea. What types of things should you practice? Practice the things you do worst. This is obvious, but how many players actually do this? How else are you going to get better at them? Improving your worst things will raise your entire game. How about practicing that shot that cost you the match, that angle you always see wrong, shooting softly, shooting hard, getting position when the object ball

Rack’em

OnTheBreakNews.com

Often, the most effective way to practice is what’s called “progressive practice.” Billiard Digest columnist Bob Jewett promotes this method, and I’ve seen it yield wonderful results. Here’s how it works. Pick a shot or skill to work with. Let’s say it’s medium speed spot shots. The usual practice method – setting it up and having a whack at it 5 or 10 times – is not going to help much if you’re only making it 1 time out of 5. The trick to progressive practice is to start with the easiest possible version of the shot, instead of starting where you’re already having trouble. So, for our spot shot example, spot the object ball, and then move the cueball forward along the line to the object ball until it’s only a diamond or so away. Shoot the shot. If you make it, move the cueball back a diamond or a half diamond for the next try (making it progressively harder). Shoot 15 or 20 times. If you miss, move forward to the next easiest shot position. When you make it, make the next one a little tougher. This type of practice quickly shows you where your trouble begins, and keeps you working right near the edge of your current ability. Try it. Make progress.

PIN BALL POOL Here is one of my creations from a long time ago. Since there is a lot of action and ricocheting going on, this shot reminds me of a pin ball machine. It is not an easy shot but it should definitely be made within 5 tries. All four object balls must be pocketed.

STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com

Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

Let’s start by setting up the first couple of object balls, the Black and the Brown one. The Black ball needs to be situated at one-ball + 2mm distance from the long rail, at the first diamond from pocket C. The Brown ball must be frozen to the Black ball at one-ball distance from the rail. As a result, their line of centers aims at the right point of pocket A, as shown in the diagram by the dotted brown line. Add the Red ball hanging by pocket C and the Blue ball by pocket D. Then place the Cue Ball at about 1.5 diamond distance from the Black ball and in a straight line with it. In this shot it is particularly important for all the balls to be very clean.

A

Let’s aim the left half of the Black ball and use a 4 o’clock, 1 tip of English, 2.5-speed stroke on the CB. By doing so, provided, as I said, the balls are fairly clean and therefore there is not much friction between them, the Brown ball should sink into pocket A, while the CB hits the long rail, bounces off of it, makes the Red ball F and travels towards the Blue ball to pocket it as well. In the meantime, the Black ball hits both long rails to end into pocket C, while avoiding colliding with the CB.

B

E

The only adjustment that may be necessary, in case the Brown ball hits the long rail and does not sink into pocket A, will be to place the Black ball closer to the long rail, using for both the Brown and the Black ball the same one-ball distance from it, in order to compensate for the excessive throw.

Good luck!

KISS SHOT DRILL

Bob Jewett

Bob Jewett

I recently took a lesson from the former European Champion Alex Lely. One of the drills he had the students do was a series of kiss shots. For some of them I was surprised by how easy they were if the balls were sitting right. I don’t propose that you make this drill a weekly practice but if you spend 15 minutes with it two or three times, I think your percentages will go way up and you will start seeing more kiss shots in games. The point is to get some feel for kiss shots before you have to play one in a match.

BIH

This kind of shot is very useful on a crowded table such as eight ball right after the break. Another good place to use it is when the ball you are kissing off of, such as the 4 in Shot 1 is part of a cluster. That kind of break-out is often overlooked. In Shot 1, put the 4 ball about a diamond out from the side. From where it is sitting, the 1 ball needs to hit the 4 nearly full to get the kiss angle into the pocket. Try it several times and move the 1 ball towards the 2 if you need to. You will have to shoot firmly to hard to keep the 1 ball from acquiring follow on the way to the 4 ball.

Shot 1 4

Shot 2

Next in Shot 1, try playing the 2 ball off the 4. You have cue ball in hand for the shot. With this intermediate angle, you can let the 2 ball roll into the 4 at much slower speed and that is the best way to play the shot. Have the 2 ball hit about half the 4. Finally, play the 3 off the 4 with a pretty thin hit. I think you will find this angle really tough. Shot 2 is similar, but the balls are farther from the side pocket. With the kiss ball (4) in the middle of the table, is any angle odds-on to go? After you have some experience with them, try each shot 5 times and note your success rate. Shot 3 is a less structured practice I like to play. With balls in random positions and cue ball in hand, find and play a kiss shot. Which shots do you see at that end of the table? The 5 off the 7 is similar to the 1 ball in the first set of shots. With the greater distance to the 7, you have to be more careful not to let the 5 ball acquire much forward roll before contact. The 5 off the 8 is similar but even a little harder. Shots like this are a lot easier if the cue ball is in hand or just happens to be in the ideal spot. Do you see any shot at all with the 2 ball? The kiss off the 5 with a softly rolling ball is nearly a

natural. I think off the 7 is impossible since it is about 90 degrees. Kissing off a ball to a side pocket or the other end of the table looks unlikely. The 6 ball has three easy shots. You can slow roll it off the 7, 2 or 8. This kind of slow roller with about a half-ball hit comes up all the time in the rack area and you have to be ready to see them. The main things to note when you are practicing kiss shots is which angles are total naturals for a slow roller, which require more care aiming, such as the very thin hits, and which require high speed to preserve the ideal kiss angle.

OnTheBreakNews.com

The guys over at Accu-Stats, have a huge amount of data from hundreds of thousands of games that were played in the 1980s. As of late 1987, top professional players operated with a Total Performance Average of .811 (meaning the were successful with whatever they attempted to do during a game around 81% of the time). They successfully kicked balls 79% of the time. They ran-out 56% of the time, and they pocketed roughly 90% of the shots they decided to shoot. Professionals also pocketed a ball on the break 51% of the time and got position on their next shot 93% of the time. Most amateurs could easily narrow the gap between themselves and professionals by: • Increasing their overall knowledge of the game. • Implementing better patterns when choosing to run-out • Knowing when and how to play safe • Developing a consistent pre-shot routine • Practicing their kick shots TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF THE GAME What are the more important technical aspects of the game? To increase your overall performance, you’ll need to become proficient in the following areas: 1. STROKE If you’re not making consistent contact with the spot on the cue ball you intend to strike, your fighting an uphill battle. In studies that have been done on the subject most amateur players do not hit the cue ball exactly where they intend to contact it. Most amateurs need to put their stroke in a groove. You can do this simply by getting a coke bottle and stroking your tip and ferrule in and out of the bottle repeatedly. If you can do this regularly without touching the side of the bottle you have developed a fairly accurate stroke. 2. AIM Being able to aim is just as important as striking the cue ball where you intended to hit it. If you can’t pick out the spot on the object ball that needs to be struck then you are going to have some serious work to do. Pick out an effective aiming system and learn it well. It will pay dividends quickly. 3. SPEED CONTROL Speed control is just as important as your stoke and aim. Without it you

www.facebook.com/onthebreaknews

Buddy Hall and Larry Hubbart -1982 Clyde Childress Memorial Pool Tournament - Photo by Mike Haines & Bill Porter – Courtesy of Mary Kenniston can’t play position on your next shot or play effective safeties. IMPORTANT MENTAL ASPECTS OF THE GAME 1. POOL KNOWLEDGE When I give lessons to professionals, I have noticed over the years that their shot selection is always good. Most amateurs however, need a lot of work on their “KNOWLEDGE OF THE GAME” that is, picking the right shot to shoot. Most amateurs play the wrong patterns and tend to play safe at inopportune times. They are also ineffective kickers. Being able to choose the right shot doesn’t require any skill development, it’s just about gaining knowledge. You can gain that knowledge from watching lots of professional pool matches. 2. PROCESS What is that you need to focus on during your “preshot routine” to maximize your chances of success? Professional players won’t attempt a shot unless they are 100% committed to it. I can guarantee that! The first thing to do is look at your current angle and determine the speed and spin the shot needs to be hit with to get to the desired position area. From there it’s all about subconscious delivery. Implementing an effective pre-shot routine will also help you keep negative thoughts from entering your mind. 3. RISING TO THE CHALLENGE If you’re interested in some of the exercises that can help you put together a more effective practice routine to narrow the gap between you and a professional, check out my website (www.poolteacher.com) and enroll at Virtual Billiard Academy.

The No Master 8-Ball Tournament on October 14-15, 2017, presented by Big Dog Billiards in Des Moines, IA and Kamui, was another huge success! We ended up with 121 players, just 7 players short of filling the event. The field was made up of players from 6 different states. We would like to thank each and every player that played this past weekend. You all showed great sportsmanship, and were the reason this event ran so smoothly.

These events require so much work in the way of checking players ratings to make sure they are eligible to participate. Over the last few years we have strived to prevent master players from sneaking in, and I think we’ve succeeded. A lot of times there is a very fine line on player ability, and it can be a very tough decision whether to let someone in or not. With each No Master Tournament we hold, we get closer and closer to an even playing field. An example being, in this event there were 57 hill/hill matches, which I believe is the most to date. As a tournament director, there is nothing more satisfying than watching these up and coming players battle it out in a very fair format, with not one player being questioned on their eligibility.

The long hours researching player history and stats definitely pay off. Being that this event is held in Des Moines, I find myself pulling for the local players. Very happy to say that 18 of the top 32 players came from our local pool community. Great shootin guys! Congrats to top finishing local player Anthony Ludwig on his 3rd place finish! The top female player in the event also came from Des Moines. Sharon Rinkert earned $100 for her tremendous play. Also, very proud of the local junior players for getting in this. I want to encourage them to keep playing in these events. Proud of each of you! Again, thank you to each and every one of the 121 players that played this weekend! This event was held at the Spirit Lake Casino & Resort in Saint Michael, ND on October 5-8, 2017. Also, thank you everyone for competing and making this event successful. Neal Burr posted on FB: Good afternoon, well I lucked out and WON the 5th Annual Spirit Lake Open 8 Ball Tournament, Men’s Open 8 (B) Division held at the Spirit Lake Casino & Resort in Saint Michael, ND. Went undefeated in the tournament, man it was a good four days of tough competition with a lot of table time. I got to visit with some new and old friends whose greasy faces I missed talking to and laughing with, lol. I would like to thank everyone who participated and helped put on this event, it was good run pool tournament. Hope everyone has a blessed Sunday, be safe out there. Daniel Thompson posted on FB: The sad part of pool to me is I’m sitting here watching a great finale between Rory Hendrickson and Michael Perron Jr. and there only 4 people watching here live. I always try to stay and watch to the finals it’s my way of showing my support for this game that I love. On a different note this is a great tournament put on by Spirt Lake Casino I’m not sure why this tournament isn’t filled up every time. GRAY & MCMINN Take Top Honors in WICHITA!!! Joey Gray Club Billiards in Wichita, KS was the venue this past weekend, September 28-October 1, 2017, for the $3000 added 2nd Annual John Guffey Memorial and had a variety of events for the players and fans. The main event was one pocket – sixteen players including last weekend’s Carom Room One Pocket champ Jeremy Jones joined the fray to duke it out for top honors. First round action saw Joey Gray send Shane McMinn west while Chip Compton and Gabe Owen battled it out in the second round. Chip joined Shane on the loser’s side. Third round action had two marquee matches – Gabe defeated Jeremy while Joey took down Charlie Bryant. Both winners advanced to the

hot seat match with Joey locking up his seat in the finals. West side action saw Jeremy defeat Shane leaving him with a 4th place finish. Gabe put a stop to Jeremy’s quest to make it two in a row - JJ settled for third and Gabe got another crack at Joey. Since this was true double elimination, Gabe would have to defeat Joey twice for the title but Joey had other ideas. He defeated Gabe 3-1 to take it all. Good tournament, Gabe! Congratulations, Joey! Meanwhile, Joey continued his winning ways as he split top honors in the bank ring game mini with home town favorite Mike Beehler. Thirty-two players showed up on Saturday for the 8-Ball event. When the smoke cleared, it was down to four players. Charlie Bryant

Meanwhile, on the one loss side, Jeremy Jones defeated Terry Young leaving Terry in 4th place. With his eyes on the prize, Jeremy knocked Charlie out of the way leaving Hillbilly with a 3rd place finish. Again, this being true double elimination, Jeremy would have to defeat Shane twice. This was not to be, as Shane beat Jeremy 7-5 to take the win. Great tournament, Jeremy! And, congratulations to Shane!!!

Pena & Chau Unchallenged Ernesto Bayaua, Kevin Guimond, Alex Calderone, Manny Chau

On October 14th-15th, 2017, the Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour held its tenth stop of the year at Bogies West in Houston, Texas. The tour would like to thank Bogies West and staff, title sponsor Poison by Predator Cues, and sponsors Cyclop Pool Balls, Ozone Billiards, APA of North Harris County, OutsvilleBilliards.com, and Realtor Jimmy Jenkins, for their continued support. Justin Pena of Kyle, Texas, took down the Poison Lone Star Billiard Tour’s amateur 9-ball division, winning his first-ever, amateur title, while Manny Chau secured his fourth, open 9-ball division win this year. Pena went undefeated, overcoming Austin’s Floyd Smith in the final set, 5-4, while Chau also went unchallenged, ousting Alex Calderone in the first set of the true, double elimination final, 7-6. In the amateur division, Justin Pena took no prisoners on his way to the winners’ side final four. Pena hit Jeremy Byrd, 5-2, and Pete Charles, 5-2, while Bill Fuller tagged Brian Rosenbaum, 5-4, and Floyd Smith, 5-1. Will Felder chipped away, booking wins over Freeport’s Alan Myers, 5-1, Austin’s Mark Smith, 5-1, and Bobby Broussard, 5-1, while Chuck Adams

Back on the east side, Fuller fell to Pena, 5-4, and Adams overcame Felder, 5-3. The hot seat match featured two, brand new participants, both vying for their first hot seat win, and a possible a tournament victory. Pena overpowered Adams, 5-3, earning himself a ticket to the finals, while Smith ended Felder, 5-0, and Myers depleted Fuller. Smith went on to extinguish Myers, 5-3, and Adams, 5-1, for a shot at Pena. In the final set, Pena powered through, sliding by Smith for the win, 5-4. Robyn Petrosino, Natalie Rocha, Ellen Robinson, Toni Esteves Natalie Rocha went undefeated to win the most recent Gulf Coast Women’s Regional Billiards Tour 9-ball event, held September 30th, 2017, at Bogies Billiards in Houston, Texas. In the final, Rocha faced off with recent Houston Open Champion, Robyn Petrosino, overcoming the upand-comer, 7-4. Twenty-seven women attended the ninth stop of the 2017 season, and the tour would like to thank all those who came out to support the event, along with Bogies Billiards, and tour sponsors, Cyclop Pool Balls, Ozone Billiards, APA of North Harris County, Outsville Billiards, and Jimmy Jenkins Realty. Following a short players’ meeting and draw, action commenced around noon, and Natalie Rocha came out firing. On her way to the final four winners’ side, she ousted Monica DeTuncq, 7-2, Gail “Thunder” Roles, 7-5, and Jillian Nickerson, 7-2. Gail “Virginia Slim” Eaton was on her way, securing wins over Natalie Mans, 7-5, Christy Stanton, 7-0, and Toni Esteves, 7-3. Robyn Petrosino bested Joyce Davis, 7-4, Brittany Williams, 7-2, and Loretta Lindgren, 7-4, while Kim “Texas Heat” Pierce took care of Terry Petrosino, 7-6, and Mona Nesh, 7-1. One loss side action kicked off, with Lindgren eliminating T. Petrosino, 5-1, and Esteves sliding by Roles, 5-3. After suffering a second-round hit, Ellen Robinson won five matches, including wins over DeTuncq, 5-4, Yvonne Asher, 5-1, and Nesh, 5-1. Nickerson overcame Tiffany Mundie, 5-1, to line out the final four players remaining on the one loss side. Back on the east side, Eaton overcame R. Petrosino, 7-5,

and Rocha sent Pierce west, 7-5. Rocha made quick work of R. Petrosino, claiming the hot seat, 7-1. In the west side stretch, Esteves overpowered Lindgren, 5-1, and Pierce, 5-4, while Robinson overcame Nickerson, 5-2, and Eaton, 5-4. Robinson won her fifth match, squeaking by Esteves, 5-4, but fell to R. Petrosino, 5-3. Once again, R. Petrosino would tee it up with Rocha, in search of a different outcome. Rocha was in rhythm, and R. Petrosino kept pace, until Rocha pulled ahead to end the set, 7-4. Congratulations to Natalie Rocha on

Eaton Erupts on Gulf Coast Tour

Lindgren, 5-4, while the elder Petrosino blew past Roles, 5-1, and Garland, 5-3, and Asher, 5-0, marking up seven wins, and earning another chance at Eaton. T. Petrosino was thirsty for her first win, while Eaton searched for that fifth notch in her belt. All year, the battles between these two players have been epic, full of twists and turns, ups and downs. In the final set of what she’d hoped to be the first of two sets, T. Petrosino appeared more determined than ever, as she took the lead, 4-2. Following an unforced error on the 8-ball, Eaton capitalized, closing in at 4-3. This caused a slight shift in momentum, but T. Petrosino answered back. Toward the second half of the set, never more than a game apart, Eaton inched ahead to victory, 7-6. Congratulations to Gail Eaton on her fifth win this year! The tour would like to congratulate Shreveport’s very own, Stasie Knight, on her best finish to date! The final event of the 2017 season will be held on November 11th-12th at Fat Rack’s Sports Bar and Billiards, 11813 West Ave., San Antonio, Texas 78216. This 9-ball event will be two-days, $1,000 added, played on 8’ tables with Cyclop Pool Balls. The first annual Gulf Coast Tour Awards will be presented at this event and will include Tour Champion, Sportsmanship, Best Attendance, and Most Improved Player. Free practice begins at 10am, and the mandatory players’ meeting begins at 11am, followed by the awards ceremony. For more information about the WPBA sanctioned, Gulf Coast Women’s Regional Billiards Tour, visit GulfCoastWomensTour.com. Gail Eaton, aka “Virginia Slim”, went undefeated to win her fifth Gulf Coast Women’s Regional Billiards Tour 9-ball event of the 2017 season. Eaton faced off with Terry “The Terrorizer” Petrosino, narrowly defeating her in the first set of the true double elimination final, 7-6. Following a brief players’ meeting, matches commenced, and Gail Eaton was on her way to the winners’ side final four. PERFORMANCE

MAKES ALL OF THE DIFFERENCE The most important factor in cue ball deflection is cue end mass. Katana shafts use a ferrule that is half the length with thinner walls to reduce the amount of cue ball “squirt” during play.

7 Responsive Top Layers The top 7 layers are medium density boar hide, tanned naturally up to 12 months to achieve maximum control and consistency.

3 Foundation Layers The bottom 3 layers are high density pig skin, selected for its premium durability and legendary feel.

KATANA PERFORMANCE SHAFT TECHNOLOGY 10-Piece Spliced Radial Construction The grain in a solid wooden shaft creates a natural spine which affects how the cue ball reacts to impact. Rotating the cue, even a quarter turn, will change how the shaft performs. By splitting the shaft into ten sections and alternating the direction of the grain, Katana removes natural variances and provides lower deflection and more consistent results.
