DES MOINES, IA The 4th annual Midwest Billiards & Cue Expo is a wrap. It featured some of the world’s greatest players again this year, along with pool’s biggest fans. Dennis Orcollo, also known as “Robocop”, is truly a force to be reckoned with in the great game of one pocket. The scenario leading up to the finals was exactly the same as last year, with Alex Pagulayan losing his first match of the event, but fighting his way back to the finals against Orcollo. This time however, Dennis wouldn’t be denied, capturing the one pocket championship in convincing fashion, 7-2. Tony Chohan played very well as always, and finished in 3rd. Tony Chohan showed us that he is also a great rotation player, not just a one pocket champion. The 10-ball challenge was played on the bigfoot diamond table, where most spectators thought Tony didn’t have a chance against the likes of Rodney Morris, Jeremy Jones, Francisco Bustamante, and the great Efren Reyes. But Tony proved everyone wrong, capturing the title. He defeated “the rocket” Rodney Morris, 11-8 in finals, with Busti finishing in 3rd. Alex Pagulayan showed all of us why he is considered one of the best bankers in the world. The “lion” was roaring with some tremendous banks to win the “by the rail” Banks ring game over Francisco Bustamante. John Hennessee, one of the toughest players in the country on a bar table, put on a clinic. The 9-ball portion of the expo featured 142 great bar table players. In the finals, it came down to a match between two of the hottest players out there right now, John Hennessee vs Jason klatt. The match would be decided by who broke better, and Jason came up dry 3 times in the finals, which cost him at the very least the first set. John made the most of it, and got the win in a hill thriller, 7-6. Somphet Thongsouk, one of our great local players from Des Moines, finished in 3rd. Danny Olson finished 4th. Sarah Rousey was our highest finishing female player in the event. Sharon Rinkert was our highest finishing local female player. As the

tournament director, I would just like to thank all the players for their sportsmanship, their promptness when matches were scheduled, and the quickness at which they reported their scores. You, the players, made my job easy. I could go on and on about the stats from the event, but I feel that the fans that support these great events don’t get enough recognition in articles like this. Just like the previous 3 years, the fans travelled from far and wide to play in the open event and to watch their heroes battle it out. On the event facebook page, I asked that anyone that attended the event send me their pics taken with the pro players. You can see just how much it means to them to interact with the greats of the game. That’s what keeps them striving to be best they can be, and also travelling all over the country for events like ours. An example being a young guy from Illinois, Nick Ciaccio. If you’ve ever talked with him, you will know how passionate he is about pool. He has attended the Midwest expo the last couple of years, and has met some of his biggest heroes. One story he tells is about how he had Alex Pagulayan talk to his brother on the phone. His brother didn’t believe that he was really speaking to Alex Pagulayan. So Alex sent him a selfie from Nick’s phone. I was talking with Nick on Friday night, and I told him that him and others like him are what makes these events great. We could have the top players here every year, but without fans like Nick, the event would mean nothing. Seeing how Alex, Busti, Justin, Rodney, Efren, and others interact with fans of all ages is something that will never be forgotten. To me, I rate our events by how many people walk away having the best experience possible. I would say this year’s Midwest expo might get the highest rating yet. I thank all the fans that attended, played, or watched from home. You guys are the best. I want to thank our sponsors for the Midwest billiards & cue expo. Pat Diveney, from Diveney Custom Cues, has been one of the biggest driving forces behind this event. We appreciate everything he does not only for this event, but for his players, the fans, and his customers. A great ambassador for the game. Dave Jacoby has also

been right here from the start. He shares Pat’s passion for the game, building the highest quality cue out there, and putting on the best event possible. John Bertone and Kamui tips are also a big part of our sponsorship team. Diamond billiards products. Ivan Lee from Iwan Simonis and Aramith. Rex, Jason, and Steven, from poolplayermatchups.com. Ramin and MaryAnn from goplaypool.com. Again, we thank you. The vendors play such a big part of this event. It was great to have them all here. Diveney Custom Cues, Jacoby Custom Cues, Sureman Cues, AVS Cue Shop, Keith Walton Cue sales, Palmer Cue Sales, Terry Ashelman Cue Repair, and Action 24/7 gave all the players quite a show. Thoroughly enjoyed by all. We thank them all for setting up their respective booths.

The staff at Big Dog Billiards went above and beyond again this year. Everyone, including the bartenders, the wait staff, the kitchen staff, the set-up crew, the assistant tournament directors, and the owners, put in very long hours to provide the best experience possible for all players and VIP’s. They truly deserve this recognition. On behalf of Monica, Rachael, Bri, Tody, Vicky, Shanna, Des, Michele, Cara, Jaymi, Anthony, John, Charles, Jessica, Kevin, Rick, Dylan, JJ, Marcus, Bob, Curtis, Jim, Randy, and myself, we would like to thank all who attended. You made the long hours worth it. I can’t say enough good things about the team from poolplayermatchups.com. these guys make the tournament experience great not only for the players, but the tournament director as well. In the 9-ball, we had times posted for all matches from start to end. It allowed the players to have breaks to enjoy some pro matches, get in some action, eat dinner, or just relax. We hope you enjoyed the change from previous years, where we were more of a shotgun style event. Ray Hansen with poolactiontv.com, put on a great show for everyone at home, and here at Big Dog Billiards. He also did a great job with player auctions for the pro events. I think he has learned a lot from watching the Chris Miller show. We would like to thank him for his help with promotion of the Midwest expo, promotion of pool in general, and all the behind the scenes help. They say that a successful event is one that achieves your goals and exceeds your expectations. I believe we can say without a doubt that we accomplished both this year. See you all again very soon. The Psychology of Pool DR. CHRIS STANKOVICH

Dr. Chris Stankovich, known as “The Sports Doc,” is a national expert in the field of sport & performance psychology and has been featured on ESPN for his work with elite athletes. His #1 best selling pool video “Mind of Steel: Mental Toughness for Pool Success” has been used by thousands of players to improve focus, increase confidence, and eliminate anxiety. DO SUPERSTITIONS HELP IN POOL? Does playing pool wearing your lucky shoes, keeping 4-leaf clover in your pool case, or eating a specific meal the day of big tournaments really make a difference with the way you play? The answer to this question might actually surprise you when I say YES (but only if you believe those things “work”). Most people have some kind of superstition they use to manage their way through life. In most cases the thought, ritual, or behavior is something quirky or fun, and while it may not have any magical power it does provide the believer a sense of comfort. In science we call it the placebo effect when something with no value (i.e. a 4-leaf clover) appears to have had a positive effect (the clover appears to have helped you to play your best). Why superstitions “work” Superstitions “work” in the sense that they provide the believer with confidence that he or she is doing everything within reason to be successful. When we feel comfortable with our approach, our nerves settle, our focus becomes more refined, and inevitably all of this combines to allow for our minds and bodies to work in perfect synchrony and make shots on the pool table. As you can see from this example, the superstition does not have any power by itself, but often what superstitions do is allow us to take our mind away from negative distractions (i.e. the person we are playing, or the crowd that is watching) and instead refocus on the table and making the shots we know how to make. If this sounds simple it is, but it is also often the difference between wins and losses, and between good and great.

MIND OF STEEL MENTAL TOUGHNESS FOR POOL SUCCESS Eliminate nerves & anxiety, beat pressure, and DOMINATE THE COMPETITION!! Streaming in HD on any device 24/7/365

Dr. Chris Stankovich DRSTANKOVICH.CINEVEE.COM OnTheBreakNews.com

When superstitions don’t work As I previously mentioned superstitions are not magic, and when they do “work” it is anchored in the belief that the superstation works, not the superstition itself. What this also means is that if you don’t believe in something, it’s likely you won’t see any difference with your game, either. Try instead to think of superstitions as little “helpers,” and not magic. Bottom line Every pool player needs to do what makes them feel the best they can feel, and if this includes quirky superstitions that don’t negatively effect the player then keep doing what works! Superstitions can help ease anxiety, increase confidence, improve focus, and sometimes even get in the head of the competition – all things that help players WIN MORE GAMES! But remember, for superstitions to “work,” you have to believe in them; otherwise you’re probably wasting your time keeping that 4-leaf clover in your pool case.

I would like to hear from you. If you have a question for me please submit to: information@drstankovich.com

STROKIN’ VS. POKIN’

Tom Simpson

July 2017

Ask anybody. Stroking is better than poking. Now ask them why. “Um, uh, it looks better.” Yes, it certainly does look better, but let’s peer a little more deeply. This is a big deal. The jump from poking to stroking is huge. But if you’re ever going to be an excellent player, you’re gonna have to do it. A nice stroke is highly desirable. With it come better touch and speed control, and more consistent action. It feels good, and it looks good. So what are we talking about? We’ve all seen beautiful strokes, and somehow knew they were beautiful, even though they may have looked quite different from each other. We’ve heard comments like “he’s got mercury in his arm,” or “that’s a sweet stroke.” What are we seeing there? I think we’re seeing a silky, fluid, ultra-smooth swinging motion. It’s a motion that tells us that cue is pretty much directly connected to the player’s intent – his mental image of what he wants the ball to do. It’s a stroke that has been honed through hundreds or thousands of hours and is now smooth, simple, effortless, and accurate. Pioneering instructor Jerry Briesath says a stroke is “a beautiful throwing motion.” I like that image. What are some of the qualities of a stroke? The stick swings without effort, very smoothly, with no jerky transitions, no hitches, no muscle. It feels like you’re ever so smoothly throwing the stick through the ball. The right feeling is to feel like you’re accelerating through the ball. You’re releasing the stick, not pushing it or pulling it back. When you’re not ready to shoot – not focused, don’t like your plan, not confident you’re aiming accurately – your stroke will suffer. A great stroke is without doubt. What characterizes a poke? Pokes are jerky. The stick looks like it’s being muscled around. Often, an overly tight grip will lead to pokes. If your hand is clenched, your forearm is also involved, along with some of your upper arm musculature. This “extra” muscle use interferes with the fluidity of the swing, making it look more like a jab. Where a stroke can be said to accelerate smoothly forward, a poke decelerates, actually slowing down on the way to the ball. Here’s where you can see it. A lag speed stroke might naturally yield a follow-through of about 4” or 5” past the cueball. This is because the player doesn’t try to stop the stick. He throws it and commits. Meanwhile,

Rack’em

OnTheBreakNews.com

a lag speed poke may follow through only half-way into the cueball, or not at all. This is because the player is slowing the stick. Watch closely and see how players don’t follow through, or just follow a little. To do that, they had to be pulling back against the forward motion of the stick. Instead of just allowing the bicep to pull the stick forward in the swing, the tricep is working too. They’re fighting each other. It’s pretty hard to have the kind of touch and consistency you need as a player when you’re moving in two opposing directions at once. Here are a few things to try in your quest for a better stroke: • Check your follow-through. The idea is to allow the natural amount of follow-through for the speed of the stick. Poking comes from interfering with the simple, natural forward swing. Throw the stick and let it go as far as it goes. Don’t pull back. Forward only. • No clenching. Any muscle tension you’re holding, especially in the shooting arm, interferes with the free flow of the stroke. Try to find your clenches and let them go. One way to do that is to clench a muscle hard and try to stroke. Let it go. Soften. Now, let it go some more. Keep stroking and observe what happens as you soften. • Increase touch. Most good players heft the butt of the cue as part of their pre-shot routine. They are trying to get the feel of the cue, connecting with its weight, shape, and texture. For most players, a light grip provides better touch, a better joining of cue and player. • Slow backswing. Fast, jerky backswings often lead to poking. The purpose of the backswing is simply to get the stick back to the hit position without disturbing your aim. Slow and smooth is what you want. • Melt your triceps. On the hit stroke, try an image of the tricep giving up more and more completely as the stick moves forward through the swing. • No hitting. Pokers hit the cueball. They hit it and stop there. Strokers toss the stick confidently through the ball, like it’s not even there. Be a stroker and play with more ease, beauty, and consistency. Show the flow.

ONE MORE GREAT ESCAPE STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

This month’s shot is another “useful trick shot”. More so if you are playing against a good safety player. It was shown to me about 10 years ago by my good friend and toughest opponent Mike Massey. Let’s suppose we are playing 9-Ball. Place the CB frozen to the long rail at 1.5-diamond distance from pocket A and the yellow 1-ball right by the C-Pocket. Then let’s block the CB from any direction by placing a ball (the blue one) on the long rail at about one-ball distance from the tip of pocket A, two balls (the pink and the red) frozen to it and perpendicular to the long rail, another ball (the green one) right behind it at about ½ ball distance from the same long rail and let’s finish the set up by placing 3 balls frozen and perpendicular to the short rail, with their left edge even with the first diamond from pocket A. I am right handed so I will lean over the table as much as I can by putting my right leg on top of it. You can obviously do the opposite and use the mirror image of this shot if you are left handed. Elevate your cue by about 45°. Unless you are very tall, your forearm will now be parallel to the table’s surface. Aim slightly past the first diamond on the long rail (red line). Shoot into the rail and use a 10:30, 2-tip, 2.5 speed stroke. The CB will gain a generous amount F of left spin so once it hits the short rail, it will bounce off it and curve enough to likely clear the red ball and head towards the yellow OB laying by pocket C. Speed or, if you wish, power, affects this shot so you will need to find the right amount of force to use: if you shoot too soft, the CB will curve too quickly and hit the red and 45° pink balls whereas if you shoot too hard, the English E on the CB won’t have enough time to grab and it will hit the 3 balls on the short rail. A great and very useful shot for sure!

July 2017

The first big pro tournament I attended offered a lot of lessons. One of them was an introduction to Shot 1. Hall of Famer Irving Crane was faced with Shot 1 (after a break shot at straight pool) and I was wondering what he was going to do. This is a shot that I hated because it was really hard for me to keep enough draw on the cue ball to avoid scratching if I hit the 1 ball straight and there was too much distance to try to cheat the pocket. The Deacon didn’t even slow down to think about it, he just rolled the 1 ball in by hitting rail first with an easy stroke and got easy position on a ball on the foot cushion. There are systems for aiming shots like this, but for now let’s ignore those and just get a feeling for playing the shot. So that you can repeat a shot precisely, I’d like you to get two practice aids. First, a bunch of paper reinforcement donuts will let you put the object ball back in exactly the same place a few times so you can zero in on the shot. Second, a round paper target the same size as a pool ball will let you try shooting along the same line multiple times. It’s shown up on the rail by the corner pocket. It probably won’t be 2 necessary to position the cue ball precisely, so just noting about which diamond you are shooting from will be sufficient. In the diagram, Shot 1 is being shot from 3/4ths of a diamond from the corner pocket measured along the head rail. Ready? Start with Shot 1 but with the 1 ball only half an inch off the cushion. I think the easiest way to shoot it is with a low-speed rolling cue ball and no side spin. You probably won’t need the round target. Practice the shot just until you make it three in a row. Then move the ball to an inch and then two inches from the cushion. For these shots, the target may help. Place it so that you are shooting the cue ball straight at the target. Once you see the right distance up the rail to hit, go for your three in a row without the target. Once you have the simple shot down, it’s time to move on to doing more with the cue ball. Shot 2 shows some of the possibilities. If you happen to have left yourself straight in on the 2 ball, they give you a way to get the cue ball across the table. The first to try is the follow shot, similar to Shot 1, but start to crank up the speed to get more movement on the cue ball. Running english, in this case right side, will also help move the cue ball. With the changes in speed and spin, the aim is going to change some as well. You may want to use the round target as a guide 3 even when the 2 ball is close to the cushion. Increase the speed and spin and see how far you can get the cue ball to go. Can you get it back to the kitchen? The

Rack’em

OnTheBreakNews.com

next thing to try is to get the cue ball to go straight across the table after hitting the 2 ball by using draw. What is the slowest you can hit the shot and keep a little draw on the cue ball? Finally for Shot 2, use more draw and pull the cue ball back after hitting the 2 ball. Right english will help get the cue ball back to the kitchen after hitting the right side rail. These shots at higher speed are very challenging with the object ball more than a fraction of inch off the rail, but try a few to get a little experience with the more difficult positions. Shot 3 is an advanced one-pocket shot that’s worth a few minutes practice. You have pocket A. The simple bank has a kiss (or maybe it is blocked in a game situation), so the kickbank is the best option. The donut and target will definitely help with this shot.

Anthony Beeler is a 2013 BCA National 9-Ball team champion. He also finished 9th out of 1086 players in the 2013 BCA National 8-Ball Championships. He is a certified Level 3 instructor for the American CueSports Alliance and is the founder of Maximize Your Potential Billiards Academy located in Bradfordsville, Kentucky. Beeler is also a fully licensed Kentucky Educator having, received his bachelor’s degree at Campbellsville University and his master’s degree in Education Leadership at Eastern Kentucky University. Throughout his pool-playing career Anthony has won over 300 tournaments and has defeated numerous professional players in tournament competition.

As a Master Instructor, I work with numerous students each year. One of the most popular topics in pool of late has been the discussion of how professional players aim. Many pros use the old ghost ball system, or aim through the aid of their memory from of thousands of shots they have struck during their careers. However, the majority of professionals prefer to use some type of concrete aiming system. Aiming systems range from the very simple to the complex (Center to Edge). Personally, I find that most students really don’t want to learn an aiming system that is overly complicated, and I also find that the simplest systems (like ghost ball) just aren’t all that effective. I have found that the best aiming system for most players is one that is both simple and effective. The system that I use is both easy to learn and accurate. I like to call this system, “Point and Aim.” This system is very similar to the one previously taught by Bert Kinister and Shane Van Boening. Parts of the technique I am referring to were previously referred to as “The Edge of the Shaft” system. As you can see here, the first shot is straight in. For this shot you would use the center of your shaft through the center of the cue ball and draw an imaginary line into the base of the object ball. You can also use the center of your shaft to calculate slight variances up to around 14 degrees. Simply point the center of your cue into the point on the object ball that is on the line into the pocket. Once you reach 15 degrees, the system changes slightly. For a 15 degree cut to your right, you should aim the right edge of your shaft into the imaginary line on the ball that points into the center of the pocket

(center of the white line as shown). For a 30-degree cut to your right, you

OnTheBreakNews.com

www.facebook.com/onthebreaknews

should aim the right edge of your shaft into approximately 25 percent of the left side of the object ball. For a 45-degree cut to your right, you should aim the right edge of your shaft into the left edge of the object ball. In essence, the idea is to use the right edge of your shaft if you are cutting a ball to the right and use the left edge of the shaft when you are cutting balls to your left. The problem with the system is that once you go beyond 45 degrees there is nowhere on the object ball that you can point your shaft to. Anything beyond a 45-degree cut requires a player to use a slightly different strategy. In other words, for really thin cut shots to the right, you should aim using the right edge of the cue ball into the left edge of the object ball and vice versa for thin cuts to your left. I believe this collection of aiming strategies will come in handy for you during match play. The strategies will serve as a solid foundation for aiming and will create a direct connection between your cue stick, the cue ball, and the object ball. With some practice, the “Point and Aim” system above will give you a solid framework that will help you pocket balls more consistently. Remember, practice makes perfect. In the words of Annie Oakley, “Aim at the high mark and you will hit it. Not the first time, not the second, and maybe not the third. But keep on aiming and keep on shooting. Finally you’ll hit!”

Gail Eaton HOUSTON, TX Gail Eaton, a.k.a. “Virginia Slim”, secured her fourth Gulf Coast Women’s Regional Billiards Tour victory of the season, overcoming Terry “The Terrorizer” Petrosino in the finals, 7-1, 5-4. In a second round match-up, Petrosino sent Eaton to the one loss side, 7-5, and went on to secure the hot seat over Yvonne Asher, 7-5. Eaton came back, winning nine matches, and reaffirming her number one ranking, on the Gulf Coast Tour. On June 10, 2017, female pool players from across Texas and Louisiana converged on Bogies Billiards and Sports Bar in Houston, Texas, to compete in the one-day, $500 added, 9-ball event, searching for their place in Gulf Coast Tour history. Room owners David and Shannon Richardson, along with tour sponsors Cyclop Pool Balls, Ozone Billiards, APA of North Harris County, Outsville Billiards, and Jimmy Jenkins Realty, facilitated another successful event for the women of the Gulf Coast Tour, the sixth stop of eleven events scheduled this year. The WPBA sanctioned regional tour has already amassed 82 player members, surpassing its entire 2016 membership, and anticipates breaking 100 members, this year! On the edge of securing her first tour title, Terry Petrosino took out Dallas’ Cindy Cole, Gail Eaton, 7-5, and newcomer Laurie Clouette,

7-4, while Natalie Rocha bested Gail “Thunder” Roles, 7-2, and Loretta “The Gem” Lindgren, 7-1. Yvonne Asher was on a role, ousting San Antonio’s Marilina “Big M” Nieves, 7-4, Kim “Texas Heat” Pierce, 7-6, and Round Rock’s Veronica “Pistol” Perez, 7-6, while Tiffany Mundie surged, with wins over Julie Enzensperger, 7-6, Bonnie Mason, and D’Andrea McQuirter, 7-2. As the final four took shape, one loss action was underway. After suffering a first round blow at the hands of Petrosino, Cole came back to win four matches, eliminating Hopey Carter, 5-3, Bonnie Mason, Terri Resendez and Loretta Lindgren by the same score, 5-3; while Pierce ousted Amber Keithley, 5-1, and Clouette, 5-4. Nieves took out Roles, 5-2, Liz Yorek, 5-0, and McQuirter, 5-3, while Eaton sent home Julie Enzensperger, 5-1, Toni “Copperhead” Estevez, 5-0, and Perez, 5-1. As the final four on the one loss side rounded out, winners’ side actioned witnessed Petrosino overcome Rocha, 7-4, and Asher defeat Mundie, 7-3. Petrosino was on a roll, overcoming Asher for the hot seat, 7-5, drawing one step closer to victory. Back on the west side, Pierce overwhelmed Cole, 5-0, and Eaton ended Nieves, 5-2. Eaton went on to defeat Pierce and Asher by the same score, 5-2, to meet Petrosino in the finals. In the first set, Eaton came on strong, winning 7-1, but Petrosino wasn’t quite ready to relinquish the throne. In the second set, Petrosino answered back, but it was too little too late, as an unforced error sealed her fate, ending the set, 5-4.

Gerald Holland, 5-4, Sonny Bosshamer, 5-2, and Robert Cooper, 5-0, while Hiro Nakahara overcame Dave DeVaney, Johnny Cope, 5-0, Robyn Haak, 5-0, and Jim McCary, 5-4. After losing his second round match to Bosshamer, 5-3, Pete Charles came back to win eight matches on the one loss side, including wins over Kevin Johnson, 5-4, Holland, 5-3, Joe Fagan, 5-3, Salinas, 5-0, and Robert Cooper. Bill Fuller terminated Vic Sorto, 5-0, and Richard Hernandez, 5-3, before falling to Jim McCary, 5-3. In similar fashion, Felder sent home Brian Rosenbaum, 5-1, newcomer Red Hutch, 5-0, and Chris Ramoz, 5-3, only to be stopped short by Guzik, 5-3. Bosshamer made his play, ending DeVaney, Chris Rocha, 5-0, and Steve Williams, rounding out the final four on the one loss side. Winners’ side action witnessed Gray fall to Nakahara, 5-1, and Espinosa surge past Chauncey, 5-3. Espinosa was on a roll, and went on to secure the hot seat over Nakahara, 5-1. Back on the west side, it was Guzik over Bosshamer, 5-3, and Charles over McCary, 5-1. Following his seventh win, Charles slid by Guzik, 5-4, but fell to Nakahara, 5-3. This turn of events pitted a rematch for Nakahara, whose only hope to win this event, was to beat Espinosa two sets. Hungry for his first tour win, Nakahara overwhelmed Espinosa the first set, 5-1. Espinosa collected himself, bearing down and winning the second set, 5-0. Congratulations to Justin Espinosa on his third, amateur division title.

OnTheBreakNews.com

Round Rock’s Justin Espinosa clenched his third, consecutive amateur 9-ball division title on the Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour, defeating Hiro Nakahara in the second set of the true, double elimination final, 5-0. Espinosa now joins an elite list of fellow tour players whose game has drastically improved on tour, and have graduated to the tour’s prominent “Open Division Player List”. In the open 9-ball division, an undefeated Manny Chau racked up his second win of the year, overcoming Chase Rudder in the final set, 7-2.

on Poison Lone Star Tour In the 39-player, open 9-ball division, Manny Chau began his trek with wins over Kevin Johnson, 7-6, Robyn Haak, 7-2, and Brian Rosenbaum, 7-2, while Waco’s Doug Young bested Robbie Salinas, 7-2, Hiro Nakahara, 7-2, and Jim McCary, 7-5. Chase Rudder defeated Paul Alderete, 7-3, Bill Fuller, 7-1, Justin Espinosa, 7-2, and Joey Torres, 7-3, while Sonny Bosshamer took care of Adam Gomez, 7-3, Jamie Polk, 7-5, and Richard Hernandez. Following a 7-2 upset at the hands of Hernandez, Ernesto Bayaua took charge, eliminating Chris Ramoz, 7-1, Tom Rehm, and Jim McCary, 7-4. Other one loss side action witnessed Espinosa take out Cody Smoke, 7-2, David Chow, 7-0, and Brian Rosenbaum, 7-1. Nakahara was on the comeback trail, blazing through Mike Robles, 7-2, Will Felder, and Hernandez. Guzik made his bid for the final four on the one loss side, logging wins over Fuller, 7-6, Haak, and Richie Richeson, 7-3, until he was halted by Torres, 7-2. Back on the east side, Rudder overcame Bosshamer, 7-5, and Chau made quick work of Young, 7-2. Thirsty for his second tour victory of the year and anxious to regain his number one ranking, Chau overcame Rudder for the hot seat, 7-5. Back on the west side, Espinosa took out Bayaua, 7-0, and Bosshamer, 7-0. Torres tamed Nakahara, 7-6, but fell to Young, 7-6. Young went on to defeat Espinosa, 7-5, only to be put out of commission by Rudder, 7-2. It was a hot seat rematch for the two, heavy hitters. Rudder, vying for his first title of the season, faced off with Chau, who was anxious to repossess his place in the rankings. Chau was focused, and his determination bled through to the table. Rudder was controlled and concise, but couldn’t keep up. Chau closed out the first set, 7-2, taking home his second victory, and enough points to regain his throne in the open division rankings.

Hopey Carter from Shreveport, LA, won the Poison Cue Raffle, taking home a VX Stroke Playing Cue, valued at $239. Pitts Undefeated at Memorial Day Omega Billiard Tour Stop Article & photos from Melinda Bailey

1st $1000 2nd $850 3rd $510 4th $390 5/6th $310 7/8th $220 9-12th $100

Douglas Pitts Dave Faver Juan Bautista Tony Barrington TJ Davis, Phillip Palmer Greg Sandifer, Crispian Ng Phil Autieri, Alberto Nieto, Oscar Araujo, Denny Sneed 13-17th $75 Omar Bengochea, Peter Villatoro, Duane Randolph, Mike Stankiewicz 17-24th $50 Justin Whitehead, Brandon Thrasher, Robert Kempf, Mike Voelkering, Ron Pate, Jake Polendo, Robin Barbour, Marc Gonzales

Dave Faver, Juan Bautista, Doug Pitts Douglas Pitts chalked up his second victory (his first in a couple of years) on the Omega Billiard Tour with an undefeated run on the weekend of May 27-28, 2017. He had to get by David Faver twice to do it; once, in a winners’ side semifinal and again, in the finals. The $1,700-added, 5th stop on the tour drew 87 entrants to Puckett’s in Fort Worth, TX. For a while there, about three matches, it looked as though Pitts was just going to breeze through the field. He shut out his first opponent (Eric Solomon), gave up three racks to his second (Travis Landsdowne), and surrendered a single rack to Robert Reighter before running into three straight double hill matches that eventually put him in the hot seat. He survived his first double hill match in a winners’ side quarterfinal against Tony Barrington, and then, in one of the two winners’ side semifinals met up with Dave Faver, who’d arrived on the scene with a ‘back story’ that had a way of focusing a lot of attention on what he eventually accomplished as the event’s runner-up. Last July, Faver was diagnosed with esophageal

cancer, and after a tough fall and winter, characterized by chemotherapy, radiation and a bout of pneumonia, had his esophagus (and the cancer) removed in April. Exhausted and weak all weekend, according to tour director Melinda Bailey, Faver literally battled through to his winners’ side, double hill semifinal against Pitts, and then won three on the loss side to challenge Pitts a second time in the finals. As Pitts and Faver struggled through their double hill ordeal, Juan Batista and Phillip Palmer battled in the other winners’ side semifinal, won by Bautista 6-5 (Palmer racing to 7). Pitts claimed the hot seat 7-5 over Bautista and waited on Faver’s return. On the loss side, Faver picked up TJ Davis, who’d gotten by Oscar Araujo 9-4 (double hill), and Crispian Ng 9-5. Palmer drew Barrington, who, after his defeat at the hands of Pitts, had defeated Denny Snead 8-3 and Greg Sandifer 8-6. Barrington then downed Palmer 8-6 (double

hill), and in the quarterfinals, met up with Faver, who’d eliminated Davis 7-7 (double hill). As tired and exhausted as he was, Faver locked up in his third straight double hill fight (against Barrington) and won it (7-7). His second (possibly third or fourth) wind kicked in during the semifinals, in which he defeated Batista 7-3. Pitts, in the finals, ended Faver’s extraordinary run. He defeated Faver 7-3 to claim the event title. Tour director Melinda Bailey thanked the ownership and staff at Puckett’s as well as sponsors Michael Hoang of OMEGA Billiards Supply, FargoRate.com and OB Cues. SVB Wins Pac-West Invitational by: Carissa Biggs Portland, OR – Marc Adamus, Carissa Biggs, and Valerie Schwartz teamed up to make cue sports history in the Pacific NW with the $10,000 added Pac-West Invitational. With the additional prestige of being a Mosconi Team USA points earning stop, the event attracted contenders like Skyler Woodward, Dennis Hatch, and Hunter Lombardo. Top local and regional players converged to put their skills to the test and try to send out-of-towners home! Russell Cearley from the Eugene/ Springfield area caught a nice branch and made his way through the winner’s bracket to face Ernesto Dominguez in the quarterfinals of the winner’s side. Russell had been sold for only $25 in the auction, but he kicked himself hard for not buying his half! Local Sam’s player Scott Pahl also made a run for it, falling to Russell in the match before, and then Ramil Gallego on the one-loss side. Chris Byers had beat Hunter Lombardo on the backside, but fell to Oscar Dominguez one match before the money. Darin Walding however, made his way through the backside of the bracket, and didn’t fall until he hit Skyler Woodward in the 9th place position! There were definitely enough professional players to go around, Paul Marquez faced Corey Deuel right away and put up a great fight. Steve Lingelbach took his 2 losses to Antonio Lining and Dennis Hatch. Bob Zack faced an absolute barrage of champions: Mika Immonen, Dan Louie, Paul Potier, and Ramil Gallego where he was stopped in his tracks. Shane VanBoening cruised smoothly through the winner’s bracket defeating Ernesto Dominguez in the hot seat match. Ramil Gallego worked hard and gained momentum on the backside earning his place in the finals against Shane. Both competitors treated spectators to quite an exhibition of talent driving the score to an 8-8 thriller in the first set of the true double elimination tournament. Shane captured the final game and earned the title in addition to a cool $6,000 first place prize. Simonis Cloth, Aramith Balls, Coors, and Miller Highlife all provided support to the event, and we sincerely appreciate their assistance. Many people helped with all kinds of different aspects of the event – Paul Marquez, Liz Cole, and Kirsten Hermanson-Fery all helped with the auction. Pat Mowdy, Steve Schneringer, and David Scarth all assisted by providing their referee skills. John Evans, Shirley Morgan, and Maddy Mowdy helped with crowd control. Steve Lingelbach, Darin Walding,

Yo Claims Second Win

Jennifer Yo

Austin’s Jennifer Yo did it the hard way, coming through the one loss side to defeat Brittany Williams in the finals, and secure her second Gulf Coast Women’s Regional Billiards Tour title. In February of this year, Yo captured the first tournament of her career on the Gulf Coast Tour, and her second win more than establishes her position among the most talented, female players, spanning Texas and Louisiana. On May 27th-28th, 2017, the Gulf Coast Tour held its 6th stop of the year at one of its newest venues, CK Billiards in Dallas, Texas. Room manager, Jamie Charbonneau, and tour sponsors Cyclop Pool Balls, Ozone Billiards, APA of North Harris County, Jimmy Jenkins Realty, and Outsville Billiards, facilitated a successful tournament which featured a two-day 9-ball event, non-smoking venue, and a generous $1,000 added to the prize fund. In only her second appearance on tour, hailing from Hallsville, Texas, Brittany Williams came out firing, ousting San Antonio’s Megan Hardin, 7-1, Dallas’ Aryana Lynch, 7-2, and Veronica “Pistol” Perez, 7-3, while Kim “Texas Heat” Pierce took down newcomer Ellen Robinson, 7-4, Gail “Thunder” Roles, 7-2, and Cindy Cole, 7-4. Jennifer Yo was on a roll, securing wins over Sophia Lopez, 7-1, Angie Payne, 7-5, and Jennifer Dooley, 7-4, while recent event winner, Kawania Watson, overcame Sherry Gear, 7-3, and Shreveport’s Tina Williams, 7-6. As the winners’ side final four unfolded, the one loss side was in full swing, with 14-year old Lynch eliminating Shreveport’s Doria Rhone, 5-1, newcomer Stacy Tucker, 5-1, Dooley, 5-3, and T. Williams, 5-0, to reach the

final six. After suffering a loss to B. Williams in the third round, Perez came back with wins over Payne, 5-4, and Cole, 5-0, also reaching the final six, and the money. Back on the east side, Williams slid by Pierce, 7-6, and Watson defeated Yo, 7-4, pitting Williams and Watson for the hot seat. Watson fought an impressive battle, but when the smoke cleared, it was Williams by a game, 7-6. On the west side, Yo came back to life, ending Perez, 5-3, while Pierce overwhelmed Lynch, 5-1. Yo went on to defeat Pierce, 5-4, and redeemed herself against Watson, 5-1, marking her third win on the one loss side. The final match featured an undefeated Williams, vying for her first-ever tour victory, and Yo, going for win number two, as the first set of the true double elimination final got underway. Yo took the first set, 7-4, but Williams wasn’t down for the count. The second set was a real crowd pleaser, and although Williams fought diligently, Yo came with it, hill-hill, ending the second

Team USA Standings as of June 30th ONCE AGAIN, it was Shane Van Boening who took the honours as the eighth event on Team USA Mosconi Cup qualification took place in Oregon. The tournament was the Pac West Invitational and it was Van Boening who triumphed beating Filipino Ramil Gallego in the championship match to take maximum points. High finishers included Dennis Hatch who is chasing a fifth Mosconi Cup appearance nine years after he made his MVP-winning debut at the MGM in 2009. Other contenders harvesting the points included Oscar Dominguez, a team mate of Hatch in 2009, and Skyler Woodward who enters the top ten for the first time. The name of the game is to finish inside the top ten of the ranking once the 17th and final event has concluded in early September. Following that, Team USA supremo Johan Ruijsink will be making his picks from the top ten finishing players. To give himself some leeway in this make or break year for Team America, Ruijsink will be selecting four players from the top ten plus another whose final ranking won’t be of significance. PERFORMANCE

MAKES ALL OF THE DIFFERENCE The most important factor in cue ball deflection is cue end mass. Katana shafts use a ferrule that is half the length with thinner walls to reduce the amount of cue ball “squirt” during play.

7 Responsive Top Layers The top 7 layers are medium density boar hide, tanned naturally up to 12 months to achieve maximum control and consistency.

3 Foundation Layers The bottom 3 layers are high density pig skin, selected for its premium durability and legendary feel.

KATXS1

TIP: 12.5mm Katana tip by Tiger FERRULE: 3/8” Long Thin Wall Fiber TAPER: Pro

KATXS2

TIP: 11.5mm Katana tip by Tiger FERRULE: 3/8” Long Thin Wall Fiber TAPER: Conical

KATANA PERFORMANCE SHAFT TECHNOLOGY 10-Piece Spliced Radial Construction The grain in a solid wooden shaft creates a natural spine which affects how the cue ball reacts to impact. Rotating the cue, even a quarter turn, will change how the shaft performs. By splitting the shaft into ten sections and alternating the direction of the grain, Katana removes natural variances and provides lower deflection and more consistent results.
