an extreme vision of the future of cycling In the early 1980s, as a member of the Veloce Club Bolzano cycling team, out training that little bit which you could in winter, 5kg heavier than I wanted to be -but only because of the weight of my cold weather kit!- I started catching glimpses of a few fluidly pedaling Martians out on the road. On closer examination, these Martians proved to not actually be Martians but snobs, connoisseurs and professional riders, or more specifically: cyclists who were wearing giacche termiche, thermo-combi bodysuits, the first lycra bib shorts… These were the first images I caught of the modern clothing project as applied to cycling: lightweight synthetic performance fabrics, anatomical cut, ease of movement. I immediately fell in love with the purity and essentialism of the designs, the ideals of the project. Not long after these first experiences I began to involve myself more directly in the design of these “martian” outfits and for the next 20 years I would work on garments regarded as amongst the world’s most highly performing pieces of cycling clothing.. The startling innovations in cycling clothing design continued throughout these years, some originating from the company I worked for, others not, some visually striking, others powered by hidden technologies, all very pure: the first socks to employ open mesh weave panels (a true ‘body mapping system’), Windstopper™ laminated membranes which immediately shaved hundreds of grams from thermal jackets, the first elastic chamois insert in bib shorts in 2001, a certain American company’s plastic eyewear, which gave technical credibility to a product which had previously been considered ‘poor’, the development of the first seamless base layers, which completely revolutionized the layered approach to dressing for riding… The clothes designed by Q36.5 belong to this history
of pure innovation. Some of our designs are entirely innovative and create new clothing systems, others instead refine the details of an industry benchmark, making it even purer. In each instance every piece of clothing carrying the Q36.5 label always brings with it a distinctly new feeling relative to anything the rider has previously worn on a bicycle. This unique, and historically new tactile quality is something invisible but at the same time the real signature of the brand. -Luigi Bergamo-

Salopette L1 Essential The king of the collection and the key garment for understanding the Q36.5 mission. Nothing extra. Nothing standard. 160g per pair and totally new ‘feeling’ in the history of the modern bib short. The new feeling of the Salopette L1 Essential which the rider will immediately notice not just in the particularly snug and supportive fit of the bib shorts but also the increased smoothness and stability of his pedalling action can be explained in terms of following innovations:
UNIQUE CHAMOIS – the Salopette L1 Essential is the first bib short in the world to use both sewn and thermo-moulded padding technologies in a single chamois, fusing the best of both into a single design: 120kg highest density open cell foam is cut and sewn for the perineal (front) area, where the most flexibility and breathability is required while ‘smooth’ multi.density thermo-moulded pads are used for the ischial (rear) area, where flexibility is at less of a premium, compared to support and padding.
UNIQUE PATTERN- the Salopette L1 Essential is inspired by neither the 2-panel (Descente) or 8-panel (Assos) concepts which have dominated since the mid-80s, but is cut according to an entirely new ERGOGENIC PATTERN for the astute calibration of support for different muscular groups during exercise, all with minimal use of seams (and none frontal facing, for increased aerodynamics).
UNIQUE LEG GRIP SYSTEM - the use of the traditional elasticated leg opening (which can bother riders in moments of maximum exertion) is eliminated entirely in favour of a softer treated polyamide-elastane gripper sewn into the inner side of the opening.
UNIQUE FABRIC – the Salopette L1 Essential is built entirely from one Italian 6.6 polyamide woven in 4 different densities used at different points of the design for maximum athletic efficiency. The greatest density (Modulus Force warp 510, weft 620) is used in the lumbar panel of the shorts where it works actively to improve stability and body alignment during the pedal stroke as well as reducing muscle fatigue. All other panels are similarly calibrated, in co-ordination with the unique minimally paneled pattern of the shorts, to actively support the rider during activity: sensitive riders will notice the sensation of ease of movement, as the motion of the legs are guided by the particular VECTORIAL ELASTICITY of the garment. -The threads used for the fabric undergo a water-repellence treatment before being woven (so as to maintain their ‘natural’ structure), improving drying time as well as resistance to water making the bib shorts a particularly good riding choice in wet weather. -Differently to the traditional knitted fabric used for most top-end bib shorts, the extraordinarily high-density nylon 6.6 structure used in the Salopette L1 Essential allows for maximum robustness at a lower weight, as well as a significantly longer product life. UNIQUE BRACES – the Salopette L1 Essential is constructed with an entirely new proprietary TUBULAR BRACE SYSTEM which provides a softer and more anatomic fitting and removes all seams from contact with the body for greater comfort.

Salopette L1 Lady The Salopette L1 Lady has been constructed to replicate the same radical new feeling of the men’s Salopette L1 Essential. There are, though, two subtle differences. Namely: The particular EMANA® weave used in the main leg panels. This variant of the polyamide 6.6 of the Salopette L1 Essential is made from a distinctively softer version of material used in the men’s model. This fabric, in addition to its softer feel, has a unique polyamide formula that offers significant improvements in circulation. The proprietary TUBULAR BRACE SYSTEM which provides a softer and more anatomic fitting and removes all seams from contact with the body: unlike its male counterpart here the braces are strategically placed on the side of the body, using an X-shape to maintain maximum tension without irritating the chest area. Jersey Short Sleeve L1 High-performance minimalism. 120g (weight is always the result, never the objective) of pure summer jersey calibrated for the intense versatility required on high-performance summer Dolomite (and similarly challenging rides), where the range of riding conditions is often great and potentially dangerous if not appropriately dressed (temperatures between 15°-40°c, 100-180bpm range of heart rates, 8-80km/h range of riding speeds). The jersey is constructed from a polyester microfilament (UniqueFabricL1) which conjugates the need for breathability (given naturally by the fabric’s structure), superfast drying speed, lightest weight and ergogenic fit in order to produce the requisite amount of versatility required for the extremes of intense summer climbing and descending. In fact sensitive riders will immediately notice the extra comfort given the slightly thicker and softer fabric which, while in no way comprising breathability, pulls the moisture away from the body far more efficiently than the paper-thin fabrics used in other true lightweight jerseys. This offers significantly greater protection to the body while riding long descents immediately after arduous climbs. The jersey’s construction is itself a piece of advanced sartorial engineering, employing a new jersey pattern and kimono-esque sleeve design which minimizes the use of seams (none frontal facing for increased aerodynamics) and an ergonomic ‘pre-shaped’ fit (note the way the jersey ‘falls’ into a riding position even when unworn, on a hanger), which is snug without being constrictive, thanks to the fabric’s elasticity. The minimal look of the jersey is accentuated by the entirely new Q36.5 proprietary invisible pocket system, which replaces the traditional 3-pocket patch found on all other jerseys. High UV protection +50SPF. 3mm camlock zips throughout.

Vest L1 Essential The first cycling Gilet was introduced in the 1980s, shortly after the advent of laminated ‘shell’ fabrics. From the very beginning this piece of clothing was imagined and developed specifically for Professional riders as the maximum expression of versatility and essentiality; a true ‘emergency friend’ capable of offering a broad range of protective features with minimum volume. Over time the Gilet has conjugated itself into two distinct categories: the windproof/ rainproof Gilet and the thermal Gilet, used as protection against the cold. The Q36.5 gilet eliminates the distinction between the two categories with a hybrid 4-season 137g piece of equipment. This is achieved primarily through the use of the UFHyrbidShell material, a thermal ribbed fleece material which, while constructed without a membrane (which would confer wind or waterproofing qualities) is woven, on its outer side, with such an extraordinarily high density so as to create a wind resistance comparable to that of a traditional soft shell fabric, while maintaining a high degree of breathability. Sensitive riders will immediately appreciate the advantages on long descents, where the sweat soaked jersey is able to wick through the gilet and properly dry, an entirely novel sensation for riders used to the gilets currently available on the market. The material has also undergone a treatment before being woven (as opposed to a ‘finish’ employed on the fabric, choice which allow the threads to maintain their natural characteristics) for water resistance and fast drying times. Cut on the same fit block as the Short Sleeve L1 jersey and constructed with same advanced sartorial techniques. No rear pockets but two invisible slits for accessing rear pockets of jersey or jacket worn underneath. RIRI 4mm Acquazip.

Base Layer 1 sleeveless Exploiting the possibilities of cutting-edge Karl Maier Seamless knitting machines, Q36.5 has developed a technologically extreme vision of the traditional seamless base layer. Even riders who are already familiar with high performance seamless base layers will immediately be able to notice the new feeling introduced in this product. Most notably: -Significantly greater elasticity and lower resistance to movement in all directions, given by the Karl Maier machine’s ability to construct multiple tubes without any seams (most ‘sleeveless’ base layers still nevertheless are technologically obliged to be sewn around the armhole, for example). The removal of all seams (with the exception of two short joining stitches at the shoulders) obviously also greatly increases the comfort of as tight-fitting a garment as a base layer. -A much tougher and less fragile lightweight material, since unlike other seamless machines Karl Maier machines are able to develop a true rip-proof mesh. The base layer’s fabric is left un-hemmed, which further removes stitching from the garment: in fact it can be cut and modified as the user wishes, without compromising the durability of the product and no risk of unraveling threads. The ‘honey-comb’ pattern of the knit is deployed in various different densities, along with open-mesh sections, mapping the thermal requirements and regional sweat rates of an athlete’s body. Not only does this allow for the best rider comfort and protection, it also allows for the volume of the product to be significantly reduced where possible. The result is a startlingly pure and minimal base layer. Weight is 75g (result of the design, not an objective) and is best used above 22°C.

Ultralight There’s only one colour scheme for a secret-weapon sock if a sensitive and particular pro wants to wear it without breaking a sponsorship contract: all white, no markings. Without giving too much away this sock (in its original version) is all white and has no markings. Originally designed for the elite cyclist who prefers to wear a tighter fitting shoe for more direct pedalling sensations and thus requires the thinnest sock that technology permits. This seamless tube sock is knitted using an ultra-fine, incredibly soft, microfilament with high elastane content for a snug fit and zero-crease interface with the shoe. It is designed with strategic mesh panels for breathability and 2 multi-channel ribbed padding zones, one in the metatarsal area, the other to protect the Achilles tendon. You’ll barely notice you’re wearing it. 8cm cuff length Technical Specifications: Materials: 62% polyamide 6.6, 15% polypropylene, 23% Elastane Weight: 26g per pair Sizes: 36-39, 40-43, 44-47 Cuff length: 8cm Gender: unisex When: best use above 22°C Product Code: Art.200 (pure white), Art.201 (white ITA), Art.202 (black ITA), Art.203 (vaccaboia orange edition), Art.204 (vaccaboia green edition), Art.214 (green fluo), Art.215 (orange fluo), Art.221 (yellow fluo)

Compression This sock is an evolution of the traditional compression sock, often thought of as a recovery garment, into an active performance and racing direction. Use of the same lightweight microfilament as the Ultralight but in a more compact knit and with higher elastane content allows for the construction of a 32g active compression sock that can be comfortably used in full summer on performance rides, where reduction of muscular fatigue is most vital. Designed with an atypical ‘cone’ shape for gradual “pump action” compression of the foot, with density increasing from the top to the bottom. Identical Achilles and metatarsal ribbed padding as the Ultralight. 12cm cuff length. Technical Specifications: Materials: 50% polyamide 6.6, 10% polypropylene, 40% Elastane Weight: 32g per pair Sizes: 36-39, 40-43, 44-47 Cuff length: 12cm Gender: unisex When: best use above 18°C Product Code: Art.206 (white ITA), Art.207 (orange white) Art.208 (orange black), Art.209 (green white), Art.210 (green black), Art.216 (orange fluo), Art.217 (green fluo), Art.222 (orange fluo), Art.221 (yellow fluo)

Plus Essential for those who prefer that full pedal to the metal thin sock feeling all year round, this is an avant-garde ultra light winter/mid-season sock constructed with superior natural thermic merino wool and silk threads. The sock follows the same lightweight density construction techniques of the Ultralight adapted for use in cooler climate conditions: the addition of silk (scarcely used in cycling socks) to the merino wool increases the thermal properties of the fabric while at the same time significantly reducing volume and weight. 13cm cuff length. 37g per pair. Please note that this wool-silk thread blend will shrink slightly (though not enough to necessitate wearing a larger size than usual). For ultimate zero-crease contoured fit we recommend cold washing the sock before first use. Technical Specifications: Materials: 52% merino wool, 13% silk, 10% polyamide, 25% elastane Weight: 37g per pair Sizes: 36-39, 40-43, 44-47 Cuff length: 13cm Gender: unisex When: best use above 8째C Product Code: Art.211 (grey), Art.223 (camo green), Art.224 (camo orange), Art.2 (Santino Italy)

Summer glove L1 A stripped-down and essentialist modern Grand Tour summer glove. 13.3g per glove. Lightweight and highly breathable, like the entire collection, these gloves have been constructed with minimal padding in the palm area (for nerve protection), synthetic leather micro-perforated mitts and Japanese synthetic suede details. The uppers use a bacteria-static polyamide/carbon fibre which the rider will notice provides a particularly crisp and fresh tactility on demanding rides. There is also a small micro-fleece towel below the thumb and forefinger. The glove has been cut with a ‘pre-shape’ pattern, meaning that even when unworn it curls forward in the wrist and thumb-forefinger areas, mimicking the riding position of the hand, for the smoothest flowing hand movements when worn riding.
