The ruggedly spectacular vineyards of Tasmania have proved themselves capable of producing such fine sparkling wine that many think them the most serious challenger to the great Champagnes. The traditional grapes of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir make this Distant South sparkling, a wine of finesse and complexity, of length and flavour. A rich toastiness mingles with crisp apple notes, backed by a persistent creamy texture. A sparkling wine of outstanding quality.
The name ‘Fleur de Prairie’ means ‘wildflowers’ and anyone who has visited the Provençal region in the south of France will have seen the sweeping fields of lavender and sunflowers. A blend of Cinsault, Grenache and Muscat, gentle ripening in ideal conditions have ensured that this fresh and floral sparkling is redolent with juicy strawberries and a mix of red berries. Amelia Burge is the 6th generation of one of Australia’s most famous winemaking families and already forging a stellar reputation for herself. The history and legacy of the Barossa runs in her blood, but she is already writing new chapters. Her delightful sparkling wine combines classic varieties and neatly entwines that history with a contemporary perspective. VERSUS BY AMELIA
Versus is a fun take for a serious wine. This collaborative effort between the competitive 6th generation of the Burge family, Amelia and Trent, Barossa stalwarts, has seen brother and sister push each other to new heights. The result is this delicious sparkler. A Chardonnay Pinot Noir blend with notes of fresh summer fruits yet real complexity, a rich mouthfeel but a light and crisp finish.
Cremant de Bourgogne, once massively popular, is now a local gem far too rarely seen beyond Burgundy’s borders. Simonnet-Febvre, a leading producer of Chablis since 1840, offers this delightful example, made from a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, a reminder of past glories and a prime example of today’s gems. A wine of finesse, it offers fresh bread, minerals and citrus, with mouth-watering acidity, supple texture and a long, clean finish.
L’EGLISE 729982BLANQUETTESAINT-MARTINDELIMOUX
From France’s fabled LanguedocRoussillon region, made from Chardonnay and Blanquette, which is sometimes known as Mauzac, this wine continues the legacy established back in 1531 when Limoux produced the world's first bottle-fermented sparkling wine. A delightful sparkler with a supple texture, crisp acidity and persistent bead, the flavours move through grapefruit and lemon curd to flint and yeast. A pleasing alternative to Champagne and one which offers excellent value.

While New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc has grabbed all the attention over recent years, it is easy to forget that the grape’s spiritual home is France’s Loire Valley, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. There, with generations of experience behind the makers, it makes a more subtle, less aggressive wine than its Kiwi counterpart. This fine example offers a pleasing mix of floral notes, vegetal characters and lovely hints of exotic fruits. A lovely rounded, balanced wine.
