FROMCATEGORY
It’s time to implement the first ever Customer First Ranging (C1R) review for Red Wine. We have reviewed the entire red wine floor, and this will be the single biggest range change ever seen in the Australian Liquor Market let alone Dan Murphy’s.
Lloyd Kelly MESSAGE
future we see Grenache (+16% YTD) and Tempranillo (+3% YTD) as the next two varieties we want to explode and drive growth in, and I’m pleased to say, as of this review, we will have two bays of Grenache (20 new lines) and a bay of Tempranillo (12 new lines) in all stores. Further to this, we have also taken the opportunity to clean up the red blends planogram and break it out to Red Blends, GSM, Grenache, Tempranillo and Other Varietals, with Malbec (five new lines) grouped together. All up we have over 200 new lines coming as part of this review with over 40 new Pinnacle reds on the way. This guide is designed to help you navigate our outstanding new Pinnacle range with helpful tips, tasting notes and selling suggestions for each wine.
It’s no secret the most significant growth category in red wine has been, and will continue to be, lighter style reds lead by Pinot Noir (+9% YTD). Given this growth we are making macro changes in a large proportion of stores to give an extra bay of Pinot, we also have 54 new lines coming across various state and cluster combinations to support the increased space. Lookout for one of my personal favourites, Distant South Pinot Noir from Tasmania via LookingPinnacle.tothe

We have taken huge learnings from the first two trials in Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc that we have applied to red wine. We are doing a heap of work behind the scenes to make sure the +200 new lines we are ranging up are ready to order, power bays POS and information is accurate, and that clearance is keyed once rather than in waves.
Initial results from the red wine trials are showing significant uplifts in sales and range perception.
A key part of the C1R process is planogramming all the fixtures on the wine floor, meaning no more fine wine or optional range. The benefit that this gives us moving forward is we will know what wine is in what store, and will be able to start talking to our customers about all of our great wine range by store, by cluster in the future.

Pinot Noir is the greatest grape on the planet. Bar none. Now, this will and has obviously been debated long into the night. Lovers of the other contenders, especially Cabernet, will have none of it. Some say it is the battle for head (Cabernet) or heart (Pinot); the cerebral (Cab) or seductive (PN). Pinotphiles will not be moved. A great Pinot Noir is a thing of exquisite beauty, finesse and elegance. They will be silky, vibrant, complex, red-fruited and most of all, they will reflect a sense of place. Pinot tells you where it is from, more than any other red. Pinot Noir is also a most capricious variety. For a long time there was a school of thought that Pinot could only be successfully grown in Burgundy, but regions in America, New Zealand and Australia have proved that wrong. Pinot Noir does require the right conditions and appropriate vineyards, otherwise it will produce mediocre wines. But when everything comes together, no grape that can soar to greater heights. It is the Holy Grail for both winemakers and wine lovers.
3
Just as hogs in the woods can ferret out hidden treasures, so too have our winemakers left no stone unturned in seeking the finest sources of Pinot Noir from throughout South Australia. No surprise that Adelaide Hills provided the starring role. A lovely fresh style with plums, dark fruits and those intriguing forestry characters exploding across the palate. A treasure uncovered, indeed.

This fine example shows all the elegance that has become the hallmark of Tassie Pinot. It offers the classic varietal notes of plums and red cherries, backed by a little spicy oak. A delicious savoury style.

Bodegas Borsao has been producing fine Spanish wine from the north-east of the country for decades. Today, the co-operative has more than 375 contributing growers. No grape personifies this more than Garnacha – Grenache to you and me – the most planted red on the planet. The region claims to be the birthplace of this great grape. This is a delightful mix of rich flavours and soft tannins with a persistent finish. Olé!
BORSAO CLÁSICO $9.99
Grenache
Grenache is an underrated grape and wine lovers are often stunned to discover that they have been drinking and enjoying it for decades. Grenache can soar on its own as a serious red; it can be made as a light, fresh, easy drinker; often it will form a blending component, especially with varieties like Shiraz and Mataro; it is ideal for Rosé; often used in fortifieds; and too often represents a large percentage of bulk wines. Good Grenache will come from select regions like the Barossa, Clare Valley and McLaren Vale. The vineyards will be dry grown (non-irrigated) and it is a variety that really does benefit from vine age. There are arguments over its history, but France’s Rhone Valley is the grape’s spiritual home. Spain and even Sardinia make claims – Sardinia calls it Cannonau, as legend has it that they grew and made wine from this grape, which they exported to Spain, in return for cannons and cannon balls. These wines will be far more elegant, with finesse, great length and silky tannins, than many of the blockbusters that these warm regions often produce. They can develop further over time, if well cellared. Naturally, such versatility makes them the ideal food wine, with an ability to shine when matched with a wide range of cuisines.

The famous region of Krondorf, in the Barossa, settled by Germans in the mid 19th century, is renowned for Shiraz so it makes perfect sense that the Rhone Valley’s other great varietal, Grenache, should also perform beautifully here. In typical Barossan style, this Grenache is full of red berry spice with seductive, velvety tannins on the finish.

THE DAN MURPHY'S WINE PANEL
Imagine standing in a Spanish wood and breathing in the aromas and scents of wild red berries, earthy smells, oak and forest floor. That pretty much sums up this red wine variety of Spanish origin. This deliciously more-ish blend (pardon the pun) is made from a blend of fruit from South Australia’s iconic wine regions of the Barossa and McLaren Vale.
Tempranillo
8
Although its spiritual home is Spain, the Tempranillo grape performs exceptionally well in the continental and maritime climates of the Clare Valley and Fleurieu Peninsula where the days are warm and the nights are cool. This premium expression of a South Australian Tempranillo is of medium body and elegant finesse and best paired with Spanish style tapas. Try it with chorizo and olives.
HOGS
Here’s a fun fact, Tempranillo dates back to 1100 BC. That’s one extremely old grape variety that has seen a lot of history. Tempranillo reigns in Spain where it is said to have been brought over by the Phoenicians. There you will find 80 percent of the world’s Tempranillo vines. Temprano means ‘early’ in Spanish and is so named because of its tendency to ripen sooner than other varieties. Its thick black skin is rich in tannins and tolerates sunshine and heat, but also thrives in high altitudes where it gains elegance and acidity from a cooler climate. Tempranillo can be medium to full-bodied, deep coloured, savoury and earthy with red fruit characters. If aged in American oak, flavours can range from cedar, leather, spice to tobacco and sometimes strawberry. Tempranillo loves our sun-drenched country as much as it does Spain and produces delicious styles in the Clare and Barossa Valleys. Tempranillo is also an excellent food wine because of its savoury quality. Tapas such as jamón and chorizo is the obvious choice but any grilled meat or smoky dishes make a perfect match with a glass of Spain’s favourite red. IN THE WOODS $13.99

We all know about the classic red varieties such as Pinot Noir, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon, but what about all those other reds and delicious blends. Lighter more savoury, food friendly reds are back on the agenda, a spin off from the world’s current love affair with Pinot Noir. Argentina’s Malbec for example is a good example of a style that is earthy and delicious and also shows great expression in Australia’s Clare Valley. Italian and Portuguese red wines make great alternatives for red wine lovers open to different tastes and flavours while getting their European vibe on. They are traditionally made to be savoury and complex so they marry beautifully with food. Others to add to the mix include one of the world’s favourite red blends, the GSM, Shiraz and Mataro. The Barossa is producing some fine examples with all their christmas cake fruitiness. The possibilities are endless with red wine, get experimenting with a world of varieties and blends.

Clare Valley has been a quiet stronghold for Malbec (generally in blends) for decades. Malbec is ideal for customers looking for relatively alternative varieties but a wine that has a flavour profile that is very acceptable to Oz palates. The wine has a vivid purple colour with plushness and deep berry flavours. It has body and a depth of rich flavour that belies its humble price.

The Montepulciano grape is the indigenous variety planted in Abruzzo and is made into the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC wine in central Italy. Nicola Illuminati is not from a Dan Brown novel but was the man behind ‘Nicò Farm’ the winery he founded in 1890. This wine is full-bodied, deep and round, harmonic and persistent, like a typical Italian, and has garnered excellent reviews over the years from the world’s harshest wine critics.
“Dorrien Estate, located in the heart of South Australia’s Barossa Valley is the engine room of Endeavour Drinks’ plan to improve sales and margins at Dan Murphy’s and BWS. The viticulture and winemaking team, headed up by chief winemaker Nick Badrice, has achieved an enviable reputation for its sustainable vineyard management practices, intuitive winemaking, technology and consistent results at wine shows or in critical reviews. There are few wineries in Australia that can boast the diversity of regional styles and track record of quality. Because of Dorrien Estate’s role in supplying wines exclusively to Dan Murphy’s, BWS or Cellarmasters etc, the PR machine tends to highlight the latest results rather than the overall fidelity and exceptional winemaking standards at the winery. Yet the extraordinary successes at wine shows, comprising an astonishing array of regional styles including Barossa Shiraz, Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon, Tasmanian Chardonnay and Yarra Valley Pinot Noir, tells a story of commitment, focus and taking the extra mile. As custodians of our brands like Krondorf, Riddoch, Stonyfell etc, it behoves our retail teams to support and highlight these exceptional wines to our customers. With a relatively low visibility compared to heavily marketed wine brands, our proven experience and reputation, underpin an impressive portfolio of beautiful and impactful wines. Having been involved with various Classification tastings and new product development projects over the last 8 years, I am impressed with the attention to detail and overall quality of wines made at Dorrien Estate. The five star winery rating by James Halliday, multiple trophies, gold medals and other shrapnel are all great validations but in the end it is important that our teams understand there is a genuine purpose behind the sourcing, winemaking and regional styles, especially creating excitement, authenticity and value to our customers.”

Arguably the world’s most ubiquitous white wine, Sauvignon Blanc can be as polarising as it is crazy popular. Lovers of the great Sauv Blanc will tell you there is no other white in their drinking repertoire and, will sing about the green notes of peas, asparagus, leaves, nettles and gooseberries, of its zesty, herbaceous and crisp palate. Haters of Sauv Blanc will tell you it tastes like grass and smells like ‘cat’s pee on a gooseberry bush,’ a description that was bandied around a bit by the non-believers. Despite the naysayers, the palate profile of Sauvignon Blanc can be wildly different based on its origins and the way it is made. It is thought to originate in France’s Bordeaux where it is one of the region’s dominant white wine varieties, along with Semillon, but further research has linked it to the Loire Valley. Its name originates from the French word for sauvage meaning wild because the shape of its leaf is similar to that of wild grapevines. New Zealand’s Marlborough is globally acclaimed for its unique expression of Sauvignon Blanc with its traditionally unoaked style of mouth-puckering acidity, crisp, zesty fruit and intense green flavours. In the Margaret River in Western Australia Sauvignon Blanc delivers vibrant tropical fruit flavours, citrus and spice.

The most adaptable of all grape varieties and one of the most beloved white wines, Chardonnay is grown anywhere wine is produced. Its style is often created in the winery where Chardonnay can be easily manipulated by the winemaker. Its expressions can be vastly different, from fresh, flinty and minerality to unctuous honeyed peach flavours. Chardonnay was the universal grape of choice for white wine drinkers and became a global brand of its own. It was so popular that by the late 1980s the world had grown tired of the over-oaked butter bombs that was the style at the time and the term ‘ABC - Anything BUT Chardonnay’ was coined leading to consumers to experiment with other fresher white wine styles. Today Chardonnay is back. Winemakers of the modern style of Chardonnay are focussing on the vineyard first to deliver the true fruit expression of the grape and a leaner, cleaner palate profile. Australia produces some glorious expressions of this versatile grape including complex, Burgundian-style Chardonnay from the Yarra Valley to bright sparks bursting with vibrancy from the Margaret River. New Zealand’s cool climate styles are also sought after for their crisp elegance and finesse.

Bottle sizes are a strange thing. There was a time when pulling out a half bottle for dinner was as common and accepted, as we find the full bottle is today. Larger formats are not so common, though magnums are most useful for a crowd, or for long term ageing. Champagne, in particular, loves the big bottle. Somewhat bizarrely, the different sizes for fizz have all been given biblical names – Balthazar, Solomon, Salmanazar, Nebuchadnezzar and more – though no one seems to know quite why. A heavenly experience, perhaps? The famous old quote is that the magnum is the perfect size for two people at dinner, as long as one is not drinking – but attitudes have changed! These days, the trend is very much towards drinking better but drinking less, and a half bottle is absolutely the ultimate size for this. The sales growth of wine in a can and piccolos support this trend. A half bottle is an ideal amount in many circumstances. Dining solo or where everyone only wants a small glass. It is a great size for an aperitif, before one moves to the full bottles. If you want to experience a number of wines, what better way? Good things come in small packages.

For more than a century, Australians have celebrated a life well lived with Minchinbury. Our story began in the 19th century when Captain William Minchin established a colonial property in Sydney. The property was purchased by Dr McKay who would go on to plant the first vines on the land establishing the Minchinbury brand in 1859. With a history stretching over three centuries, Minchinbury has been an integral part of the Australian wine landscape, celebrating Australian achievements, moments and milestones. Notably Minchinbury gained a huge reputation in the 20th century for its sparkling wines. While still producing the iconic sparkling wines we know and love, the Minchinbury brand is now available in an exciting new range of still wines. Minchinbury still wines offer something for everyone with a selection of all Australian single varietal wines such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, as well as classic blended styles such as Cabernet Merlot, Shiraz Cabernet, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, while not forgetting a delicious Rosé.
