e are hearing many reports of vast social disadvantage in our communities: people with nowhere to live, and many who are unemployed and struggling to make ends meet. Our society is highly dependent on private vehicle transport, as evidenced in our research for the 30-year Greater Hobart Mobility Vision, which showed 84% of residents take a private vehicle to work. This has caused me to reflect on those people who do not have access to a vehicle, or who can’t afford to access our public transport system. How do they travel around? How do they get to work, if they have a job? Is an inability to access transport affecting their opportunities to work or study? How do they shop for food? How do children get to school? How do they get to medical appointments? Or even just socialise or play sport? In the Tasmanian climate it is often not practical to cycle or walk – activities that also leave these road users vulnerable in the face of motorised transport. How do we make mobility fair and equitable to access? How does it become affordable, safe and convenient? Our Public Transport Policy urges the Tasmanian Government and transport operators to ensure that people who live away from key corridors, have mobility limitations or need to travel outside peak periods can overcome transit barriers through start and end-of-line facilities. These need to include low cost/free parking as well as efficient transfers from urban fringe and rural areas onto high-frequency corridors. These would connect regional and urban fringe locations with employment, services and education in CBD or urban areas.

AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2019

We urge all levels of government to improve urban planning strategies so residences are closer to public and active transport corridors, employment, education, services, and recreational activities in order to reduce car dependency and transport disadvantage. In addition, our Greater Hobart Mobility Vision calls for all Tasmanians to have access to reliable, affordable, convenient and sustainable transport. Some of the main actions in the first five years of the Vision that will address this include:

Affordable, accessible transport - Establish a limited ferry service with up to three routes between the CBD and the eastern shore. - Establish a scheme to subsidise patronage of public transport. - Create ‘end of line’ park-and-ride facilities to service key population centres (eg. Bridgewater, Kingston, Sorell, Howrah and Claremont) with low cost/ free parking. - Remove on-street parking in key locations to facilitate prioritisation measures for public transport (eg. Main Rd/Elizabeth St, Sandy Bay Rd), as well as separated cycleways. - Upgrade public transport infrastructure

Roar Film & Edge Film

Our 30-year Greater Hobart Mobility Vision calls for better access to affordable public and active transport options.

‘But we know, as an organisation that aims to enhance the lives of all Tasmanians, that we can do more.’ and access to information (eg. bus shelters, arrival and departure times). - Develop a settlement strategy that encourages infill development and densification around public transport routes and active urban centres. This should focus on: • Appropriately pricing and managing supply of parking opportunities in the CBD. • Higher density in existing urban areas. • Shifting some large-scale industry and freight services from the Derwent Park area closer to the Brighton industrial hub, allowing for more residential development closer to the Hobart CBD. - Commence planning for systems to enable a mobility network where users can access all transport modes

under a single ticketing and payment gateway (ie. ‘mobility as a service’).

Safer active transport - Deliver infrastructure projects that reduce interaction between people and vehicles in the CBD (eg. shared spaces similar to Liverpool St). - Start work on active transport spines in the CBD in each direction, including from the Rivulet Track to Intercity Cycleway, Elizabeth St southbound and northbound, and from Sandy Bay to the CBD. - Retrofit existing infrastructure to provide connections to active transport spines. We continue to meet with all levels of government and key stakeholders to progress our Vision and its initiatives. We are also in the planning stages for Vision processes in Greater

Launceston, and in the north-west of the state. We continue to investigate the evolution of autonomous transport options, including on-demand vehicle services, which would assist people who are unable to drive. We have also supported organisations such as Kennerley Children’s Homes with driving tuition for their residents to assist them with study and work opportunities. And we conduct education programs for older drivers to fit them to their vehicle for the most comfortable and safest driving position, as well as updating their knowledge and building their confidence to maintain independence on the road. But we know, as an organisation that aims to enhance the lives of all Tasmanians, that we can do more.

FROM THE GROUP CHIEF EXECUTIVE Harvey Lennon

A

s my time at RACT draws to a close, I have been reflecting on the changes I have seen in the past 21 years, and particularly my nine years as Group Chief Executive. There has been a significant period of growth for the organisation. I am reminded of a letter I received in my first year as CEO. It was from a member who had hit a kangaroo on a dark road at about 9.30 at night. She called RACT for roadside help but, as is our business practice, she was told that it was an insurance matter, and as she wasn’t insured with us we couldn’t help. This is a story I told our staff many times in the next few months, as it highlighted a significant change we needed to make. RACT should be there for members no matter what the circumstance, and while business rules need to be followed, we should find ways to make their lives better. And so sparked a period of revitalisation at RACT. We changed our vision to ‘We find ways to enhance life in Tasmania’, and undertook an

internal commitment to become living, breathing representatives of this. Each and every day we look to make people’s lives better – through a friendly smile, a helping hand, and going above and beyond in our customer service. Since then, I have received many letters, emails, phone calls and comments from members praising our staff for their service and approach. It is great to see that we are able to be an important part of their lives – particularly when they need it most. We have also increased our focus on what we can offer to our members. From new roadside assistance products to insurance and travel services, to Tasmanian accommodation and experiences. I also recall in my early days that we operated franchised driving schools. One of the important decisions RACT made was to buy back those businesses to give us a stronger connection with younger drivers. This continues to help us look after the future of the organisation. RACT has made a number of major changes to its insurance offering over the years, entering a successful relationship with Suncorp that remains in place today. That relationship – and the overall strength of the insurance business – has provided the financial strength for the organisation to move forward and to explore new opportunities. In 2015 we moved into owning and operating tourism properties and

the Gordon River Cruises business, acquiring properties on the east coast, west coast and north-west from the Federal Group. While there are challenges with operating in regional areas, the organisation’s commitment to increasing tourism in these iconic locations and growing the local economy is yet another way we are enhancing lives in Tasmania. Today, our membership numbers are good, climbing to 195,000 this year – a far cry from the less than 100,000 when I joined RACT. It is a strong position (and a significant number) in any Tasmanian context. We also maintain strong focus on members by offering various and diverse benefits. In particular our partnership with United Petroleum, where the fuel discount has been accessed by more than 50% of members, has been beneficial. I cannot think of a better organisation to work for – it has been a very fulfilling and rewarding time. Leading this diversified group has presented many challenges, but at all times I believe we have maintained a heart in terms of our communitycentric approach to doing business. I will watch with interest as the organisation continues to grow and adapt to the inevitable changes that will come, but I am confident that the RACT will evolve to meet these changes and challenges and continue to deliver outstanding service to our members.

WE’RE HERE TO HELP KEEPING OUR KIDS SAFE

W

e don’t often realise how many good and bad habits our kids pick up in the car. To help them learn the good habits that will keep them safe in the future, road safety education can be introduced at any age. RACT RoadSafe is a fun, free and interactive online resource designed for Grade 3 and 4 students. Through a series of quizzes, games and videos, students can test how much they know about road safety. Our most recent RoadSafe sessions told us that 89% of students stop, look, listen and think when crossing a road, but 52% of students don’t know how to get in and out of cars safely. Similarly, 82% of students know how to behave in the car so the driver can keep them safe, but 53% don’t know the difference between a stop and a give way sign. RoadSafe helps schools to track their students’ knowledge and gives them an opportunity to identify any gaps that need addressing. We offer free classroom sessions to teach students about the importance of road safety, or teachers can use RoadSafe independently.

In the session we provide tips on how a supervising driver can empower the learner driver to make their own decisions behind the wheel, and ‘find their own way’ to becoming a safe driver. This approach is based on Keys2drive, a national program dedicated to teaching young drivers and their supervisors the skills to stay safe on the road for life, not just to pass the licensing test. The Keys2drive program also includes a free driving lesson for learner drivers and their supervisors, which is offered through RACT Driver Training. The program is now available to high schools and colleges throughout the state.

POLICY SERIES

SAFE ROAD USERS

ALEX LUTTRELL

T

asmania’s roads are increasingly being used by people in different ways. Passenger vehicles, heavy transport, vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians, incident response workers and road maintenance workers all share the road. Everyone has a right to be safe on our roads regardless of their age, chosen mode of transport or career. We have developed a new Safe Road Users Policy to raise awareness of what everyone can do to help. ‘Young Tasmanians and motorcyclists are over-represented in serious crashes,’ RACT Executive General Manager, Membership and Community, Stacey Pennicott said. ‘Cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists are very vulnerable in a crash, while young children require car seats to help protect their smaller bodies. ‘Emergency service workers and our roadside patrols are also in danger when attending crashes or breakdowns, and road workers are particularly vulnerable when drivers don’t obey the restrictions put in place for their safety. ‘We also have an increasing number of visitors, who can be at risk due to unfamiliarity with our roads and road rules.’ Ms Pennicott said a key part of the policy was calling for increased logbook hours, education and limitations for learner and provisional drivers under the Graduated Licensing Scheme (GLS).

10  Journeys

AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2019

‘Tasmania has one of the most lenient schemes in Australia, with a standard GLS model introduced in 2009, compared to a mix of more rigorous models interstate,’ Ms Pennicott said. ‘While we support the government’s changes to the GLS, we would like to see a more advanced model adopted in the long term.’ We are also encouraging better communication between researchers, driver trainers, parents and young drivers, focusing on education. All Year 10 students should undergo compulsory road safety education. We would also like to see an online assessment replacing the existing learner knowledge test, and the ability to submit driving hours electronically. We support pre-learner training and mentoring for motorcyclists, as well as pre-provisional assessments and refresher courses that cover wearing safety gear, safe riding behaviours and sharing the road. We also want to see the government develop a sharing the road course for motorists to make them aware of motorcyclists’ vulnerability, which would cover lane filtering/splitting. We urge all levels of government and key stakeholders to support the safe coexistence of cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles through better education, enforcement and engineering. This could include separated cycleways, wider footpaths, street

‘We have developed a new Safe Road Users Policy to raise awareness of what everyone can do to help.’ furniture, landscaping, overpasses, narrower streets, improved signals and crossings, as well as lower speed limits. We also support the reduction of speed limits to 40km/h and below in areas of high pedestrian and cyclist traffic, and minimum vehicle passing distances from cyclists. We also support education and highly visible police enforcement against the Fatal Five dangerous driving behaviours: speed, seatbelts, alcohol and drugs, distraction and fatigue. ‘The proceeds of fines must be returned to road maintenance, road safety programs, initiatives, public education and black spot road programs,’ Ms Pennicott said. Lastly, we support: reduced speeds around incident response workers, programs for elderly drivers to assess driving abilities, tourist driver education and child-seat education.

RACT ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

M

embers are advised that the 96th Annual General Meeting of the Royal Automobile Club of Tasmania Limited will be held at the RACV/RACT Hobart Apartment Hotel in Hobart at 5pm on 13 November 2019. The Constitution of the Club requires that the official Notice of Meeting, listing the Agenda items, be published at least 30 days before the date of the meeting and it will therefore be published in the October/November edition of Journeys magazine. Should any eligible member wish to be nominated for election as a director of the Board, a nomination form can be requested from Michael Hopster on (03) 6236 4301 or by email via companysecretary@ract.com.au Eligibility to nominate for election

and the election process is governed by RACT’s Constitution and Election By-laws which can be found on the RACT website ract.com. au/about-us and will be provided along with any nomination forms requested. The closing date for completed nomination forms will be 5pm on 13 September 2019. It should be noted that the position of director on the Board of the Club carries with it a number of legal responsibilities such as a requirement to act in the best interests of the Club as a whole, setting aside any contrary personal opinions a director may have. Indeed if a director has an interest in a matter or is connected with an organisation that is interested in any matter, that director will not be able to take part in any vote on the matter.

The RACT prides itself on being an independent voice for Tasmanians and consumers across the areas of its business activity. The Club’s business is increasingly complex and any successful nominee will need to have significant business acumen and be able to understand financial reporting in order to contribute to the Board and the continued successful guidance of the Club. The Board expects that nominees will have skills or experience at a senior level in relation to: accounting and finance; strategic development and implementation; risk management; WH&S and human resources best practice; legal, commercial and business acumen; advocacy, stakeholder engagement and government relations; and marketing, digital and data technology.

YOUR VIEWS EV concerns

I note that the RACT is very keen for the government to subsidise the adoption of electric vehicles (Journeys April/ May 2019). This support includes a demand to ‘incentivise’ the use of EVs by lowering their registration charges, stamp duty and the luxury car tax, providing free/low cost charging stations, preferential parking and transit lanes as well as a lower tariff to charge vehicles. Incentivise is clearly the new word for a subsidy. My concern is that the ‘incentives’ will be funded by taxpayers who cannot afford to buy an EV until they are cheaper and who are already facing higher costs for domestic electricity. Robin Claxton, Dilston

RACT has a long-standing position that opposes any increase to roadrelated taxes for Tasmanian motorists, therefore we would not support any additional costs for motorists – regardless of the purpose. The countries in which electric vehicle uptake has been highest have adopted a range of different measures, including Government subsidies for early adopters. We are supportive of electric vehicles being more commonplace in Tasmania, in part due to our renewable energy profile. If there are Government subsidies involved in achieving this, they will need to work out how to finance this without the rest of road users paying for it.

Traffic woes

I have been driving in the Launceston CBD for five years now as a volunteer with CTST. Never have I seen the build-up of slow-moving traffic in hotspots so early in the afternoons as has occurred in 2019. There are a few simple solutions to some of it. The blocking of the turn right choice at many inner-city intersections during peak times is one measure. This would greatly assist at the Charles St bridge and accidents would diminish. There are several places where parking spaces could be removed to allow better egress for both buses and cars. The slip lane at the bottom of Mowbray hill into Invermay Rd could be reinstated, or at least the turn left light arrow made to function earlier. The same at Lawrence Vale Rd intersection with Five Ways. Even getting an extra six cars through does help. Geoff Dean, Exeter

It is good that the RACT is pushing for specific improvements to all our traffic arrangements (‘Our vision for the future’, Journeys June/July 2019), but go easy on the ‘vision thing’, as it is no substitute for serious evidencebased planning. This is emphasised by the caution about ‘multiple buses and

Who are the actual commuters needing ‘mass transit’, rather than the more vague ‘public transport’, for their 200+ weekday home-work-home single-purpose rides? And yes, ‘electric scooters are [allowed] in many cities world-wide’, but that’s relevant only if we know about the topography of those cities and specifically how many have very uneven terrain squeezed between a deep estuary and rugged mountain foothills, plus how their rainy days compare with Hobart’s 145 days per annum. And, no, nice shiny new buses are not part of the solution. Leonard Colquhoun, Invermay

With regard to Hobart’s traffic situation, to reduce the number of vehicles in the city I believe it would be possible to build a number of multistorey car parks around the city on metro bus routes. This would allow the general public who work in the city, as well as residents, to park then bus into the city, which would reduce the amount of traffic. Harvey Bird, Launceston

More on number plates

I refer to the letter from Alex Kremneff (Journeys June/July 2019) in which he points out that many personalised number plates are illegible. I agree. The purpose of number plates is not simply for the benefit of speed cameras. Equally important, I suggest, is that the public can readily record the registration number of a vehicle which may be involved in criminal activity or perhaps a hit and run incident.

CLOCKWISE: Penthouse living at Change Overnight; a waterfall and shipwreck at Penny Royal; a burger with soul.

Good for the soul KATIE REYNOLDS

A

s a working parent, I know I’m not alone in thinking that carving out ‘me time’ feels like an insurmountable task when you’re doing life. Life is busy. And when you’ve got work, family and social commitments piling up, finding a little bit of time just for you not only seems indulgent but also a little selfish. Therefore, when I was given the opportunity to travel to review our new Launceston member rewards partners, I felt like I’d won the lottery. Twenty-four hours of me time. I admit to imagining snuggling into an empty king-size bed, sans kid limbs and the possibility of getting a full night’s sleep.

Play

Every time I walk up the sandstone steps and through the golden, embellished gates of the Penny Royal, I’m transported. I instantly feel like I’m in an Indiana Jones film searching for treasure, and my explorer mode is engaged. It’s a place made for adventure. The challenge I have is working out if I go straight for ice cream or to one of the many adventures that can be enjoyed. The answer to this will generally depend on whether I’ve got a child tagging along, but since I was alone I actually wandered over to talk 16  Journeys

to the staff and find out more about this gem. Located on the shores of the Tamar River, nestled into the cliffs surrounding Launceston’s Cataract Gorge, there’s a picturesque lagoon in the middle that reflects the stunning surrounds and supports a cruise on the brig Tamar. At the back there are rock-climbing walls, cliff walks and ziplines as well as eateries and shops. In the corner there’s a waterfall and a shipwreck that makes you feel you should be holding a treasure map. Although I didn’t do any rides on this visit, we came in summer with my then four-year-old, who enjoyed firing a cannon aboard the Brig Tamar Cruise, looking for ghosts on Sarah Island and floating along The Dark Ride. She was too young for the cliff-face adventures at that time but that’s the beauty of Penny Royal – each time you visit you can have a different experience. Considering ‘me time’ is often spent at the gym, I also took the chance to check out Health & Fitness World. This warehouse-style gym has everything – a cross-functional fitness area, a floor of old-school weights, quieter workout rooms, group fitness areas and cardio machines aplenty. The gym is staffed 4am to midnight

every day so you’ll never have to worry that you’re there alone, or that you’ll lose your fob. Whether you’re a local or passing through with reciprocal club benefits, you can maintain a schedule that best suits you.

Eat

A trip away is never complete without one decadent meal, and this was no exception. Seeing as I had the ability to take photos at leisure, my choice for the evening was the stunning Penny Royal Restaurant. Before dinner, I enjoyed a glass of wine outside while looking through a lens at the brig Tamar as the sun set in an array of pinks and purples. When it got too chilly, I was disappointed to have to move inside behind the windows, but I shouldn’t have been. The service was so impeccable I was promptly directed to a small table close to an external door that would take me directly to the balcony whenever I wanted. To save food order panic, I ordered a three-course dinner experience and was suitably sated with delicious eats. I could tell you about dinner but, being a sweet tooth, nothing was ever going to beat the dark chocolate pot. The homemade honeycomb and burst of raspberry coulis that sat atop a thick

indulgent mousse and mascarpone finished my evening off perfectly.

Stay

Change Overnight is a hotel with a difference. It’s a hotel designed to make you think about giving back to the world. Knowing that you’re helping make a difference means you’ll already sleep better – and the most comfortable bed in the world does the rest. The hotel is unstaffed but this doesn’t make things hard or impersonal at all. The night before I was due to stay I received a welcome email from Anna, the Operations Manager, letting me know how to find the hotel, access the building and enter my room. All of this was quite exciting, and in a way it began to feel like a bit of a mystery. The instructions were easy to follow, everything worked as it should and I was able to find my way to the hotel with ease. The air of mystery continued through the darkened corridor where the rooms were identified with stencilled letters instead of numbers and Banksy-style artistic gems greeted me in the most

Katie Reynolds

unassuming places. With limited lighting guiding the way, I wasn’t 100% sure what to expect when I opened the door. The contrast was unbelievable. I’d entered a spacious double-storey room styled simply and elegantly, with sunlight shining in from floor to ceiling. When I met with Anna later that day, she advised this was an intentional feel to the hotel – creating an ‘out of the dark, into the light’ sensation. Each room of the hotel is a feel-good room with a different story and vibe. Each one features a handpainted image by a local artist and locally sourced products that are socially conscious. When you book, you have the option to choose from one of eight causes to contribute to. You’ll know exactly what your stay will be doing to help and how you’ll be making a difference. The locality of the hotel makes it a perfect base for visiting relatives or friends from interstate. If you’re travelling into Launceston for the weekend or the kids are playing sport, Change Overnight would make the perfect place to stay.

Katie Reynolds

To finish my stay and to ensure I was sustained for the drive home, my last stop called for a juicy burger. But not just any burger, a burger with soul. The atmosphere gave me some old-school feels as the music streamed through speakers and my drink was delivered in a glass bottle with a red and white paper straw sticking out. My thick chunky chips with soul mayo and Hawaiian Honey burger arrived in a timely fashion. When I took my camera out to capture the scene, I was pleasantly surprised by streaks of sunlight giving my chips the perfect bokeh background. As a burger lover, I’ve been going to Burger Got Soul for a few years now and they always hold up.

‘The G80 feels like the type of luxury sedan you would buy if you wanted to stand out from the crowd.’

FIRST DRIVES: GENESIS

W

hen thinking luxury car brands, the names that come to mind include BMW, Audi and Mercedes. But many people wouldn’t consider Toyota, Nissan or Hyundai. And yet, all three are making waves with their own independent luxury brands in Lexus, Infiniti and Genesis respectively. Launching the Genesis as an independent brand for the first time in Australia is a bold move for Hyundai. However, if the quality and service continue along the lines portrayed at launch, it is destined for success. Jumping into the G80, there is a distinct feeling of maturity. Cream leather interior, sleek styling with walnutlook finishes on the dash, and an analogue clock all speak to the market Genesis is trying to attract. Genesis has been building cars in Korea for the past 11 years, so it has had time to refine the design. However, adapting it for the right-hand drive market isn’t without its challenges. The engineers have done well to maintain a comfortable and well-balanced drive – if a little heavy on the steering at times. Available in two variants – 3.8 and 3.8 Ultimate – with optional sports styling on each, the G80 feels like the type of luxury sedan you would buy if you wanted to stand out from the crowd. The wide body gives it a broad stance on the road, and combined with a head-turning colour range, front grille and badging, as well as 18 or 19-inch alloy wheels, makes for an impressive first impression. Inside, the mature styling continues, combined with two driver position memory settings; 12-way automatic driver and front passenger seats in the 3.8; and the 3.8 Ultimate gaining a 16-way driver seat with seat base extension for the longer-limbed, inflatable side bolster and adjustable lumbar support. The Ultimate also features power adjustable rear seats, which return to upright when the corresponding rear door is opened. 24  Journeys

AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2019

Under the bonnet, the 3.8L V6 engine produces 232kW @ 6000rpm and 397Nm of torque at 5000rpm, with an 8-speed automatic transmission on the rear-wheel drive that can be controlled by steering wheel mounted paddles. The driver can select from four modes – normal, eco, sport and snow – depending on the conditions. Testing the vehicle out in normal and sport modes showed quite a difference in performance and handling – something that would take a bit of practice to know which is best for the individual. Safety features abound, including nine airbags, blind spot collision warning, driver attention warning, forward collision avoidance assist for cars and pedestrians, lane departure warning and rear cross-traffic collision warning, as well as smart cruise control, surround view monitor and parking distance warning. For me, the better Genesis model is the G70. You can choose between a 2L turbo (179kW and 353Nm) or 3.3L twin turbo V6 (272kW and 510Nm). Both have been tuned to Australian roads and are capable of producing a sporty drive, so it’s up to you how much power you want at your fingertips. Zipping around the roads of country Victoria, the car felt more than comfortable as both a driver and passenger. And when time got tight to make our flight out of Albury, the twin-turbo V6 proved more than capable of handling whatever I asked of it. The styling is more sleek, more modern than the G80, and along with nine exterior colours and six interior colours to choose from – some with optional contrast stitching – the difference in the target market is clear. The G70 boasts a similar suite of safety features as the G80, albeit with only seven airbags instead of nine and the surround view monitor only available in the Ultimate variants. Similarly the intelligent seating options mirror those of the G80, including the driver position memory system.

Mark Bramley

Mark Bramley

Mark Bramley

For those into tech, all G70 models feature an 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system, including sat nav with up to 10 years of free map updates, digital radio, Bluetooth, and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The G80 has a 9.2 inch screen, sat nav (with the same 10 years of updates), Bluetooth, video on demand, DVD player and ‘jukebox’ function – which I didn’t test out but sounds like fun. All Genesis models come with five years’ complimentary scheduled servicing (up to 75,000km), five-year warranty and five years’ roadside assistance. My only concern for the future of Genesis is the sales and service process. Starting with a showroom, or ‘studio’ as the makers like to call it, in Sydney, much was made at launch of the ‘Genesis to you’ service. This means if you want to test drive the Genesis, they

will bring it to you. If you want to test drive all models and variants, they will bring them to you. And when it comes to servicing, they will come to you, leave you with a courtesy car and take the vehicle away for a service – provided you live within 70km of the service agent. If not, you may have to spend more time behind the wheel – but if you’re driving a Genesis, I don’t think you’ll have much cause for complaint. Genesis G70 starts at $65,408 drive away for the 2.0T; G80 starts at $75,957.80 drive away for the 3.8. For more info: genesis.com FINANCE IT WITH US! HOMING IN ON RANGE ALEX LUTTRELL takes the new fully electric 2018 Hyundai IONIQ on a trip from Hobart to Launceston and finds that more needs to be done if we want the uptake of EVs to increase.

M

ost drivers would have experienced that little heart-sinking moment on a long-distance journey when the fuel light comes on and there isn’t a service station in sight. Well that’s pretty much what it’s like driving an electric vehicle (EV) on any journey in Tasmania, even when starting on a full battery, due to the current lack of charging stations. I recently shared a drive of the all-new fully electric 2018 Hyundai IONIQ from Hobart to Launceston with my colleague Will Oakley. This was my first long-distance trip in an EV. Before departing, we jokingly contemplated the IONIQ failing to reach the northern capital. It was a real possibility, even with makeshift charging options at Campbell Town. That possibility seemed to turn to reality when we stepped into the car and found that the battery had just 194km of range. The journey to Launceston’s Paterson St car park, which is home to Tasmania’s only fast (DC) charger, is about 200km. Puzzled and stressed, we turned to air conditioning off and up jumped the range to 225km. Note to self: with the current lack of charging infrastructure, don’t drive long distance in an EV on a hot day – you may not make it. Now with a full battery, we set off relatively optimistic. I took the first shift and was instructed to sit on 80-90km/h on the Midland Highway in order for us to actually reach Launceston. For anyone that’s driven this highway, you’d be aware the limit is 110km/h, so we were moving at a snail’s pace. Once we passed Kempton, I started to notice how rapidly the battery was decreasing due to the highway’s elevated landscape. By the time we reached Oatlands, the IONIQ had used 102km of battery on an 85km journey, even without air conditioning and us travelling 20km/h below the speed limit.

LIFE ON THE MOVE

Adam Gibson

This was turning into a really interesting experience. With 123km left in the battery and about 116km ahead of us, we started to feel seriously nervous. That was until I set a feature known as ‘regeneration’. When activated, regeneration uses the kinetic energy generated during deceleration to add more range to the battery. While it only works efficiently when travelling downhill, we managed to add about 10km to the battery during the trip. I started using the feature as we hit roadworks between York Plains and Tunbridge, helping us gain a few kilometres. The lower speeds also assisted a great deal and we passed Ross with 87km left in the battery. This was a more impressive range loss of 36km, the exact distance from Oatlands. Nonetheless, Will decided it would be best to charge the car at Campbell Town using a Hyundai adapter designed for home charging. This is different to a charging station. We stopped at Campbell Town with 70km of range left and a 67km trip ahead of us. Rather optimistically, we thought we could add about 10km of range after a bite to eat and a coffee. However, after lunch, we found just 5km had been added to the battery in half an hour. With just 75km of range, the next 45 minutes were going to be very touch and go. Will took over on the home stretch and decided to switch on the cruise control in the hope it would create more consistency with battery usage. His theory seemed to work wonders, particularly when we encountered lower speeds at

the Epping Forest roadworks. We reached Perth for a quick photo stop by the South Esk River with 30km left and a 19km journey remaining. However, just out of Perth the warning lights began flashing on the infotainment system. Low battery: 13%. We had just 23km left up our sleeves. But, despite the warning sign screaming at us, we knew once we reached Launceston’s Southern Outlet that we were out of the woods. As we turned the corner onto Patterson St and entered the car park, we spotted the fast charger and breathed a sigh of relief. Against the odds we had made it with 18km left in the battery. However, in order to conserve energy, we’d had to sit well below the Midlands’ 110km/h speed limit and switch off the air conditioning. We had also struggled with battery capacity on uphill sections due to the increased power needed to maintain the same highway speed. This indicates the technology has a long way to go in terms of battery capacity, but also in relation to Tasmania’s need for a fast charging network. The Paterson St DC fast charger bumped the IONIQ up to 177km of range in just 28 minutes, for free. This was astonishing compared to our Campbell Town experience, demonstrating that a fast charging network is essential if Tasmania is to reduce range anxiety, increase electric vehicle uptake and improve environmental outcomes across our state. The first generation Leaf sold about 630 vehicles in the six years it was on sale in Australia. Most went into fleets and to early adopters. Range was around 120km on a good day and charging facilities other than at home were almost non-existent. Not an ideal place to start, but Nissan was the pioneer of EVs in Australia and should be recognised for that. Moving to 2019, things have changed a lot. There are quite a few more EVs available and charging infrastructure is becoming more common. The cost of Lithium-Ion battery technology has gone down and now allows a lot more real-world range. People are talking and considering EVs as their next vehicle, so the time is right to release the second generation Leaf. The new Leaf has four drive modes. D for maximum performance from the 110kW 320Nm electric motor. B-mode gives maximum regenerative braking. Eco-mode reduces performance to increase your mileage. Eco B+ mode maximises your range with the best of eco and regenerative functionality. Adding to Eco B+, a push of a button will select e-pedal. Nissan claims using the e-pedal under normal driving conditions will reduce the need to use the vehicle brakes up to 90% of the time. Real-world range is around the 270km mark thanks to a larger 40kWh battery, but can depend on things like driving conditions, speed, topography, ambient temperature and the in-vehicle accessories you’re using. Nissan has teamed up with Jet Charge, who’ll install a wall mounted AC charger in your home for just under $2000 (providing your existing supply and switchboard is up to it). This gives an empty to full charge time of about 7.5 hours. Normal AC charging from a power point will take about 24 hours, but research shows this will be more of a top-up

mode. A bit like your mobile phone, which you might charge and top up most nights. The fastest charging will come from a DC charger, which we’ll see more of with the State Government providing some subsidies for installations across the state. What’s even more interesting, the new Leaf provides the technology for bi-directional charging. This means you can potentially use your Leaf to power your house, similar to stationary storage batteries. While the technology to use this feature isn’t available in Australia yet, it’s likely to be here in the next 12 months. Nissan claims this will be the beginning of the end of residential stationary storage. Imagine if you could charge your car for free at work and then plug it in to power your home overnight. Shhh, don’t tell anyone! The new Leaf is full of intelligent safety features including forward collision alert, AEB with pedestrian detection, active cruise control, 360 degree around-view monitor with moving object detection, rear cross traffic alert, high beam assist, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning and lane keep assist. Available in one specification with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, an 8” centre infotainment touch screen with a 7” driver-assist information display, heated seats and steering wheel, climate control, parking sensors, tyre pressure monitoring systems, sat-nav and 7-speaker Bose audio, you’ll want for little. The Leaf will cost you $49,990 (plus on-road costs), which is pretty close to the price of the original Leaf. But of course time has moved on, and with around double the driving range, a full suite of safety features, a premium interior, all new styling with significantly improved driving dynamics, a five-year vehicle warranty and an eight-year battery warranty, the value proposition over the original Leaf is compelling. There is, however, a premium for an EV, but the gap is closing. AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2019

IS YOUR AIRBAG SAFE?

W

hat if something that’s meant to protect you in a crash is a danger to you and your family? The ACCC says there are still more than 16,000 faulty Takata airbags that need replacing in Tasmania. This is a worrying number, which is why we want all Tasmanians to check if their car is safe. The Takata airbag defect is linked to a faulty inflation canister, which can rupture when the airbag inflates. This could potentially cause serious injuries and even death as metal fragments are propelled out through the airbag cushion. As of March, 63,700 faulty airbags had been replaced in Tasmania. However, there are still 16,400 to go, with more cars being added to the list as the airbags get older.

Takata ‘alpha’

There are a small number of the critical Takata ‘alpha’ airbags in Tasmania that need replacing. These were supplied between 2001 and 2004 for models of BMW, Honda, Lexus, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota. These airbags should be replaced immediately. If your car is fitted with these

particular airbags and you haven’t replaced them under the mandatory national recall, you’ll receive a letter from the Registrar of Motor Vehicles cancelling your registration.

More models

As of July 2019, the overall recall list includes models of Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Citroen, Ford, Holden, Honda, Jaguar, Jeep, Land Rover, Lexus, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, SAAB, Skoda, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota and Volkswagen. It’s unknown how many more Tasmanian cars will be added, but more are set to join the recall list between now and January 2020.

What should you do?

If your car’s manufacturer contacts you about replacing your airbag, get in touch with your dealer immediately who will replace it for free. If you’re selling, buying or registering a car, you and the owner are responsible for checking if it’s fitted with a faulty airbag and, if it is, to organise a free replacement. DID YOU KNOW? Motorcycle lane filtering – when a motorcyclist moves between stationary or slow-moving vehicles that are travelling in the same direction – is legal on Tasmanian roads. You cannot lane filter when: – You don’t hold a full motorcycle licence; – You are travelling at more than 30km/h; – In a school zone during school zone hours; – Between the edge of the road and other vehicles; – Next to parked cars. rsac.tas.gov.au/road-users/motorcyclists

SUV FANS FACE HIGHER COSTS

S

UVs now outsell passenger cars in Australia, but owners are paying the price, according to our latest vehicle operating costs survey. If you compare a Hyundai Kona, the leading vehicle in the small SUV category, with the small car classleading Kia Cerato, motorists will pay more than $6500 extra over a five-year ownership period. The survey uses Tasmanian data, with all expenses associated with normal car ownership (purchase price, interest, fuel, electricity, servicing, new tyres, insurance and depreciation) taken into account. This year’s cheapest car to own and run is the Kia Rio S in the light car category, which at $107.97 a week is cheaper than all the vehicles in the micro class and more than $17 per week cheaper when compared to the Fiat 500 in the micro category. In the volume selling small car class, the Kia Cerato is cheapest to run with a weekly cost of $130.90 – more than $15 per week cheaper than the next cheapest car in that category. If you want to stick with an SUV, the recently released Toyota RAV4 GXL is the cheapest vehicle to keep on the road at $188.81, despite the new vehicle getting a price increase. Good depreciation predictions, leading fuel economy and fixed price servicing contribute to the RAV4’s low overall cost. The Mitsubishi Triton was the

A wild western family adventure

CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: Kids at Cradle Mountain; Road trip towards Cradle Mountain; Children’s Room at the Wilderness Gallery.

DANIELLE ROSS-WALLS takes a trip with her family to the wild west of Tasmania. She shares her top 10 memorable experiences. 1. Watch out for bushrangers

4. Tiger tales

2. Creature comforts

5. Making magical memories

3. Rare wildlife encounters

6. Take the camera

Head north from Hobart and when you hit the Southern Midlands the family will delight in spotting the black silhouettes that make up ‘Shadows of the Past’ – an exhibition by local artists. Following the highway starting around Kempton, it offers a glimpse into colonial life – think bushrangers, stagecoaches and more from the era of Van Diemen’s Land. Take the slight detour to Oatlands – be sure to check out the landmark Callington Mill and the town’s picturesque streetscape of grand architecture. Next, continue on to the small township of Ross for a visit to the tragic yet fascinating Ross Female Factory. Don’t miss the convict-built bridge – it makes for a stunning photo. As you make your way into pristine Cradle Country, keep a keen eye out for the wildlife – meandering wombats, curious wallabies and pademelons are frequently sighted. You’ll find Cradle Mountain Hotel nestled in alpine woodland along the Cradle Mountain Road, less than a five-minute drive from the Information Centre and the entrance to the Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Park. Relax for the night at Altitude, the hotel’s restaurant and lounge, and enjoy a selection of the freshest Tasmanian produce and local wines. Finish up relaxing in a cosy communal lounge (older kids might enjoy a game of billiards), or grab your glass of pinot or a pot of tea and sit next to the roaring open fire enjoying complimentary WiFi. The Devils@Cradle conservation sanctuary is in the National Park, less than a five-minute drive from the hotel. It offers a rare chance to encounter the world’s largest surviving marsupial, the iconic Tasmanian devil, in a group night-time feeding frenzy. This tour is one of the most popular. Tasmanian devils are nocturnal, so night-time is often where the action is! If you can’t make this tour, the sanctuary welcomes guests to wander at their leisure during the day or to join one of its other tours. The sanctuary is home to the closely related spotted-tail and eastern quolls – also threatened in the wild – and your entry ticket supports the sanctuary’s valuable work in combatting the devil facial tumour disease and other challenges facing our native wildlife. 36  Journeys

AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2019

After a generous buffet breakfast at the Hotel, head next door to the Cradle Mountain Wilderness Gallery. See the stunning work of Tasmanian artists on show, sharing stories from around Tasmania as well as work that celebrates the Cradle Mountain wilderness. Kids will especially love the Tiger Room – a fascinating attraction that combines history, storytelling and original artworks. The Children’s Room also offers a space to explore, draw, play and investigate – all with Tasmanian themes. Kids (and parents) might like to save up their pocket money – the gift shop next door has a beautiful selection of Tasmanian keepsakes. Entry for hotel guests is free. The magical Enchanted Walk will take you through oldgrowth rainforest and button grass moorland and along the Pencil Pine Creek. The easy circuit is approximately 1.1km, taking about 20 minutes, and makes for an ideal family walk (although perhaps a tad more difficult when covered in snow). Along the track you’ll see several wombat burrows, with their inhabitants usually being spotted around dusk or dawn. The walk includes fun interpretive tunnels perfectly suited for kids to crawl or walk through. Don’t miss the small but stunning waterfall towards the end of the walk, and if it’s fungi season, kids will love to discover these colourful gems. The popular Dove Lake is definitely Insta-worthy! Formed by glacial activity over millions of years, the lake has the stunning backdrop of the Cradle Mountain range. There are well-maintained walking paths around the lake – the main walk is about 6km (approximately two hours). Don’t forget to sign in the visitors’ book and take sufficient food, water and appropriate clothing and footwear – alpine areas are known to have four seasons in one day. For a shorter walk of less than 15 minutes, head towards the boatshed for that perfect, and possibly familiar, photo. The habitat in this area is unique and includes snow gums, pencil pines, tussock grasses and the Tasmanian deciduous beech. Wildlife is regularly spotted, especially wombats and wallabies.

7. Picture postcard

Arrive at your waterfront destination - Strahan Village - on the edge of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Picturesque Strahan is a working fishing port nestled on the banks of the Macquarie Harbour. Your accommodation offers sweeping water views and makes a perfect base for exploring the rugged landscape of the west coast wilderness. Strahan has a multitude of activities that the family can enjoy. In particular, don’t miss Ocean Beach – Tasmania’s longest beach stretching over 35km. The beach is best enjoyed standing safely on the shore, as it is famous for its howling winds, known as the ‘Roaring 40s’, and its massive waves. It is fringed by the Henty Dunes – a natural phenomenon where the sand reaches a massive 30m at some points. If you’re feeling adventurous, hire a toboggan in town and take a ride.

8. Pack a picnic

Pack some morning tea and head to the People’s Park where the gentle walk to the stunning Hogarth Falls begins. The park is easily reached – less than five minutes’ drive along The Esplanade in Strahan. Named as one of Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks, it makes an ideal option particularly with younger children, being approximately 40-50 minutes (1.2km one way), although children will need supervising as there is unprotected track edges and fast flowing water. Soak up the peaceful atmosphere as you meander among the towering eucalypts and rainforests of myrtle, leatherwood and sassafras. Keep an eye out – platypus are known to frequent the area. Along the way, local schoolchildren share their connections with the area on interpretive signs. Parents will appreciate BBQs and picnic tables, as well as toilets, at the start and end of the walk.

9. World Heritage wonder

An absolute highlight – an opportunity to experience Tasmania’s stunning west coast region at its finest – is a Gordon River Cruise. No preparation is needed today (just coats and camera) when you treat yourselves to the Premier Upper Deck aboard the Spirit of the Wild. After an elegant buffet breakfast/morning tea, soak in the views of Macquarie Harbour, and then head through the famous Hells Gates and into the Southern Ocean. Shortly after, you’ll reach the majestic Gordon River – famous for its deep tannin colours and rainforest reflections. The first stop at Heritage Landing allows time to soak up the ambience with a rainforest walk where you can marvel at the ancient Huon pines. Back on board for lunch, think decadence – including freshly caught local salmon and ocean trout. Next, step back in time at Sarah Island where convicts laboured under the harshest conditions, and solitary cells were not much bigger than a coffin. Sadly, Indigenous Australians were also imprisoned and tragically many died. The experience provides some perspective before you head back to a sumptuous afternoon tea of wine, local cheeses, coffee and chocolates.

10. Round the twist

As you make your way home to Hobart (about four hours’ drive), you’ll pass the crater-like terrain created by early 1900s copper mining as you follow the Lyell Highway back through Queenstown. You’ll reach the stretch aptly named ‘99 Bends’ by locals, and don’t miss the ‘lookout spot’, offering a fascinating view of Queenstown. Also keep an eye out for Horsetail Falls, a stunning surprise around one of the bends, where the water falls down the mountain and is easily visible from the road. If you’re lucky to be there when it’s raining, you definitely won’t miss it in its forceful glory.

n the far southern forests of Tasmania, the Arve Road to the Hartz Mountains and the Tahune Airwalk winds inland through some of the world’s ultimate Eucalyptus forests. During a tense few weeks in January 2019, large expanses of these remarkable forests were scorched in a wide-ranging bushfire, starting a new chapter in a long story of rebirth. Now that the route is open up to the Hartz Mountains, you can easily and safely see some of these striking landscape changes from the comfort of your car. You can travel into the Huon Valley (making sure to stop in at Geeveston to say hello) and head out along the Arve Road, following signs for the Hartz Mountains National Park. The farm paddocks appear untouched, with little sign of the determined struggle to protect the properties. But a few kilometres along, you’ll enter the forest to discover the strong fragrance of peppermint and ash. The road curves its way into the valleys behind the mountain range, offering an intimate view of the burnt forest. What was once thickly clad with our distinctive Southern Hemisphere rainforest trees has now opened up to the tall 38  Journeys

standing Eucalyptus trees above. Many of them – especially the older and rotten ones – have died, but many others have already begun resprouting. Along with the new fronds of the tree ferns, these intense splashes of green stand out in the charred scenery. The ancient beech trees and thickets of horizontal, massive tumbled logs melting into moss are now replaced by small fallen trees, charred chunks of wood and drier, crisper sticks jumbled in all directions. Just past the Arve Picnic Area you’ll come to the Hartz Road, heading steeply up into the mountains. You’ll start gaining altitude and soon exit the burnt zone into the higher subalpine forests. Here, the Eucalyptus trees are smaller but, like the giants below, have been waiting for a fire to clear the rainforest beneath so they can continue to dominate. Unfortunately for these upland Eucalyptus, they’ve missed out on this fire event, with the rare montane rainforest plants surviving another year. This includes the celery top pines, Antarctic beeches, waratah and more, which you can discover on the mountain walking trails in the national park. So, things have indeed changed. The forest, as an ecosystem, is not totally

destroyed, and the surviving Eucalyptus of today may be the exceptional giants of a future century. The rainforest plants will, much more slowly, begin to sprout in the shadows of the Eucalyptus, and if there is no fire for a few hundred years, they may transition back to mossy emerald forests. When I was a first year forestry student in Seattle, we learnt about the world’s ‘sclerophyll’ (leather-leaved) forest zones. These fire-adapted forests are found in the temperate regions of western North and South America, the Mediterranean, Southern Africa and Australia. I asked a professor if Eucalyptus was a sclerophyll plant, and he chuckled ‘Eucalyptus is

the ultimate sclerophyll’. These forests growing along the Arve are arguably prime examples of this ultimate fire tree. It’s been 20 years since that conversation, and 50 years since the extensive southern Tasmanian bushfires of 1967. Much has happened for us humans since then. However, those years have passed quickly for the centuries-old Eucalyptus trees, which have been waiting patiently for a burn like this one. As we go year by year into the future, we’ll be able to see the changes as the forest grows, and compare it to our photographs and memories of an earlier time. Let’s see what develops. A SEA OF GREEN

W

hen bushfires ripped through southern Tasmania in January, images of the Tahune Airwalk, which appeared to bear the brunt, were stark and startling. They reflected the feeling of a community whose tourism industry relies heavily on the 85,000 visitors the airwalk attracts each year. While the site remains closed, the story is a much more positive one than the original images portrayed. ‘If you stand on the deck of the visitors’ centre, you could imagine nothing has happened,’ Tahune Adventures director Ken Stronach said. ‘A lot of the big trees are still there, and you just see a sea of green. It’s really the forests along the roadside that have taken most of the impact. ‘Driving in along the Arve Road it’s not surprising people think that the

40  Journeys

AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2019

airwalk has been devastated by fire, but that’s not the case. ‘Most of the airwalk structure remains intact, and the engineers have confirmed that we only need to replace the timber entry, the supporting guy lines and some other minor works to get the airwalk itself up and running. ‘We’re aiming to reopen the airwalk and visitors’ centre as soon as we can get all of the works completed.’ It has taken a team of six arborists working up to six days a week to make the area safe for visitors. ‘Many of the side tracks and walks still need to be rebuilt and will take more time,’ Ken said. ‘But the main attraction is still a fantastic experience.’ Tahune Adventures is a member of RACT’s Royal Rewards program. We will give an update of the benefits members can receive closer to the airwalk’s reopening.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX

H

ave you ever wondered what it would be like to see a Tasmanian tiger in the flesh? Should we be trying to bring these animals back from extinction? These questions and more will be addressed at BeakerStreet@TMAG as Professor Mike Archer from the University of New South Wales presents a talk about de-extinction and whether it’s possible to bring back the thylacine. The extinction of the thylacine is something that’s engrained into the minds of many Tasmanians. Thousands of locals and visitors have wandered the halls of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and seen the black and white footage of the last known thylacine from 1936, with many speculating if they’re still out there. Mike and his team might just make it a reality. ‘I’m particularly focused on the animals that we as humans are responsible for making extinct,’ Professor Mike Archer said. ‘We’ve slaughtered so many animals, directly or indirectly. ‘We feel the technology has given us the tools to redress that inappropriate behaviour.’ During his talk Mike will explain the intricate scientific technology behind bringing a thylacine back to life using preserved DNA. He will also explore how this project could be managed if it actually came to fruition, such as the thought-provoking idea that we could keep thylacines and other native animals as pets. ‘Nothing we’ve ever put our arm around and valued has ever gone extinct. It’s what we don’t value and leave on the other side of the fence that’s in trouble,’ Mike said. Mike will also shine a light on the potential boost in tourism thylacines could bring to the state, as well as the opportunities for new scientific research. ‘One of the saddest and most depressing facts about the loss of the thylacine in Tasmania is that no scientists were actually out in the bush studying it,’ Mike said.

Professor Mike Archer.

‘By the time it went extinct we didn’t know anything about its actual biology in the field. ‘This would be a wonderful thing to learn about if we can get them back out into the bush.’ Mike will also be showcasing Australia’s world records. Australia was home to some of the world’s most intriguing species that shaped life on planet earth. We’re talking about the oldest rocks and animals, the biggest dinosaurs, the first songbirds, the world’s only ‘drop crocs’ (crocodiles that climbed trees) and the largest creature (Neptune sea grass, which grew 8km in diameter and weighed 6000 tonnes), just to name a few. ‘Australians should be proud of the incredible records that are here,’ Mike said. ‘It’s part of our national identity that we really should embrace.’ Mike’s work will certainly open your eyes to what nature and science is capable of. BeakerStreet@TMAG will run 16-17 August at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery as part of National Science Week. For more information visit beakerstreet.com.au

‘This really was impressive, and the crew made everything happen with seamless perfection.’

With Tasmania’s cruise ship numbers booming, you may have failed to notice a smaller, more intimate option cruising the coastlines of our island state. Janet Bidgood steps aboard with Coral Expeditions.

I

’ve travelled on large, medium and smaller ocean cruise ships before, as well as river cruising, but having never been on an ‘expedition’ cruise, I really didn’t know what to expect. What a surprise – not only was the Coral Discoverer a very comfortable small ship, which was able to take us to remote places and get up close to seals and dolphins, but the service was outstanding. How often are you greeted in person by the ship captain when you board a cruise ship? This really was impressive, and the crew made everything happen with seamless perfection. They also served Tasmanian produce and local specialties onboard, as well as some of our state’s finest cool-climate wines. We boarded the ship in Hobart bound to places where very few people get to go – Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area, including Port Davey, Bathurst Harbour and Recherche Bay, which was absolutely stunning. We were the only small ship allowed in the area. Then we cruised up the east coast of Tasmania to the Freycinet Peninsula, including Wineglass Bay, and back, with several stops along the way. If you have never actually been on an expedition cruise, Tasmania is the perfect place to start. The Coral Discoverer and its small tender vessel Xplorer are able to get

AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2019

into small coves and remote areas that you otherwise cannot experience. The company follows strict guidelines on where the ship can moor and when you board and leave the tender, as well as a ‘leave no trace’ ethos that includes washing your shoes before and after you explore a remote area. All of this left us feeling that we were experiencing something very special, but also not disturbing this pristine environment. By the time we disembarked our cruise, we knew all the passengers on board as well as all of the crew, having spent time with everyone. And we had seen amazing flora and fauna under the guidance of our expedition leaders and professional speakers. Coral Expeditions provides a number of expedition cruising options in Tasmania between January and March onboard Coral Discoverer, including seven and 14-night cruises. You can also choose a Chase the Race cruise from Sydney to Hobart in December, following the competitors in the iconic Sydney-Hobart yacht race. Bookings for next season are available now. If you wish to explore further afield, Coral Expeditions also has cruises in The Kimberley, Great Barrier Reef, and Cape York and Arnhem Land in northern Australia, as well as international cruises in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. Janet Bidgood was a guest of Coral Expeditions.

SETTING SAIL FOR NEW SEASON

V

oyage Log: Bruny Island: ‘Our exploration of Adventure Bay began with a hazy veil hanging thickly over the eucalypt-forested hillsides. As the fog evaporated, the bright day breathed colour and clarity into the view. We landed ashore in two groups – one took on the Fluted Cape track, climbing through open forest to the giddy height of almost 300m above the pulsing ocean directly below. Trekkers caught their breath, and the view in photographs, then traced the cliff line and descended by the organ pipe cliffs. Bennett’s wallabies, superb blue fairy wrens – resplendent in their bright summer plumage – and endemic green rosellas flitted in and out of view, and a remarkable white wallaby momentarily appeared. ‘Far below, the second group of hikers had traced the Adventure Bay shoreline, hearing tales of the sea, strange fishes, whales and whalers, timber and tiger snakes. A great morning hike in a truly beautiful and arresting national park.’ Marking Coral Expeditions’ 35th anniversary year in 2020, we are delighted to share our improved Tasmanian

itineraries. Sailing aboard Coral Discoverer, our focus is comfort and exploration, with expert guides and local storytellers. Our Pristine Tasmania seven-night expeditions provide an opportunity to discover what few get to see, with excursions to artisanal food and wine producers, hikes in national parks including remote Port Davey, or you could ‘Chase the Race’ on our Sydney to Hobart voyage. Highlights of our 16-night Circumnavigation of Tasmania expedition include visiting the Bass Strait islands of Flinders and King and venturing down the remote west coast of Tasmania. NEW HOME IN MELBOURNE

I

t’s almost time for Celebrity Cruises to make its mark in Melbourne when, for the first time ever, we home port one of our luxury cruise ships Celebrity Eclipse there during the 2020-21 summer season. The 2850-guest, 120,000 tonne Celebrity Eclipse will arrive in Melbourne on 23 December 2020 – fresh from a multi-million dollar modernisation – for her inaugural season, which runs until April 2021. The cruise ship will be the newest to ever home port in Victoria and will deliver significant benefits to the state. Eclipse will be the first ship in Australia to undergo the $700 million ‘Celebrity Revolution’ – a modernisation of nine of Celebrity’s 12-strong luxury fleet – which is already underway. The revamp will see the accommodation, culinary program and public spaces completely modernised by a formidable line-up of world-renowned experts, including famous UK interior designer Kelly Hoppen.

Relaxing view of the spa.

From its arrival in Victoria on 23 December 2020, guests can choose from seven round-trip sailings from Melbourne, between eight and 14 nights, to destinations in the South Pacific, New Zealand, Queensland, Tasmania and South Australia. Two one-way, 11-night New Zealand sailings between Melbourne and Auckland will also be offered. Eclipse will finish her inaugural Australian season on 4 April 2021 with a 19-night Melbourne to Honolulu voyage. For more information, visit your local RACT Travel branch.

CRUISE SALE DAY

RACT TRAVEL

TAKES YOU AWAY

We hope you will join us at our annual Cruise Sale Day on Sunday 11 August, at our new venue – Wrest Point Casino. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn all about cruising from the experts, with more than 40 cruise lines represented, supplier presentations, exclusive savings and mystery gifts for all bookings on the day. Our professional team of travel advisors will have a fully operational travel agency on site to help make choosing your dream holiday easy and affordable. See you there from 10am-3pm. And if you live in the north, there will be deals available for you instore at our four northern locations – Burnie, Ulverstone, Devonport and Launceston – during our following Cruise Sale Week from 12-16 August. All the deals will be hot, hot, hot – so be sure you don’t miss the boat!

EXPLORING P&O RACT Travel and Cruise Travel Centre staff are very fortunate to be able to inspect many of the ships that come into Hobart. Darren White from our Rosny Travel branch was impressed by P&O’s Pacific Explorer when it visited Hobart for Dark MOFO and has shared some of his thoughts with us:

Some people love statistics

77,000 gross tonnage / 1998 passengers / 11 decks

Some people love food

19 dining options with daily changing menus (don’t judge me, ice cream is still a dining option)

Some people just love being at sea

There is so much to do, you can be as active or as relaxed as you choose Pacific Explorer has a beautiful balance of all things cruise. Walking onto the ship you are greeted by the four-deck atrium looking fresh and airy. The colours are so relaxing and it creates a mood for the entire ship. New to the fleet, Pacific Explorer sets a new style and feel for the cruise company that has served the Australian market for decades. Listening to their cruising passengers, P&O has refined the way it does things. You still get great attentive staff, great food and some of the best entertainment and activities at sea, but some new ideas have been added such as shows for adults and The Bonded Store – a venue where you can have a masterclass in whisky and gin. But all the fun isn’t necessarily just inside and it isn’t all for adults. Try P&O Edge, an adventure at sea for all ages with rock climbing, flying fox and even walking the plank. The water park has large water slides as well as an exclusive area for kids. While the kids play, the Oasis pool and bar is the adults-only retreat. It is near the gym, but if that isn’t your thing then the Elemis Day Spa is right next door. Something new from March 2020 will be cabins capable of sleeping a fifth person. While brilliant for families, the number is limited – so book early! Come and see me on Cruise Sale Day and book a cruise holiday to remember. CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: On board P&O Pacific Explorer – sun deck with pool; Four deck Atrium; Dragon Lady Asian restaurant. AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2019

OPEN YOUR EYES TO NORWAY

C

ome aboard with Princess Cruises as we open your eyes to one of the most beautiful countries on earth. This 15-day journey starts in London, where you board the luxury Crown Princess bound for Norway. The first stop is Haugesund, where you will cruise the spectacular Akrafjord, one of Norway’s most scenic fjords, and see the Langfoss Waterfalls – voted by CNN as one of the 10 most beautiful waterfalls in the world. Take a helicopter to Pulpit Rock – also known as Preikestolen – with its steep cliff rising 604m above the stunning, winding Lysefjord. You then sail on to Flaam (Sognefjord), home to one of the steepest railway tracks in the world. Hop aboard the Flaam Railway express, one of the most dramatic train rides in Europe, visit an exceptional 12th century stave church, and see the natural splendour of Naeroyfjord from a unique vantage point – the seat of a kayak. From here you set sail for Honningsvag, with stops at Olden and Trondheim along the way.

Pulpit Rock, Norway.

Located at the northernmost point in Europe, Honningsvag is the gateway to Norway’s North Cape – the true Land of the Midnight Sun. Not to be missed are the towering North Cape cliffs, offering stunning views of the Arctic Ocean. Board a helicopter for an adventure that explores the dramatic beauty of the North Cape and a bird’s-eye view of Honningsvag. The Lofoten Islands (Gravdal) feature historical Viking museums, picturesque fishing villages and charming colourful buildings, which you can take in on an unforgettable sightseeing excursion. Your last Norwegian destination is Bergen, known as the gateway to the fjords. Take a ‘Highlights of Bergen’ sightseeing tour, and make your way up to the top of Mt Floyen by a funicular to take in the magnificent panoramic view.
