I S S U E 03 EDITOR’S NOTE Two years ago, I was approached with an opportunity to make a mark on the face of Ryerson University’s Faculty of Communications and Design. It derived from a vision that eventually evolved into this publication. A vision to promote and celebrate the work of passionate, and creative minds that would one day shape the industries of Fashion, Photography, and Design. It is quite staggering how much RADmag has grown and accomplished in the past two years. It is a testament to how an idea, with hard work and dedication, can become something great. It is a dream that has become a YLHSP[` 0 ILSPL]L 0 ZWLHR MVY HSS VM [OL MV\UKPUN Z[Hќ TLTILYZ ^OLU 0 ZH` [OH[ RADmag, and the new generation of exceptionally talented people who take our place have exceeded, and will continue to exceed all of our expectations. <USPRL [OL ZLU[PTLU[Z VM [OPZ SL[[LY ^OPJO HYL H YLÅ LJ[PVU VM [OL WYLZLU[ and the past, the content of this issue is clearly focused on the future. The submissions made by the creatives from fashion, photography, and design for the Fall 2015 issue have made it clear that they intend on shaping the environments of their various industries. From otherworldly landscapes, to the induction of old and new fashions, or even the revitalization of the mythical, it is clear that the students of Ryerson have a vision of the future, and I am pleased to share their visions with you. As my last act as Editor in Chief I would like to say farewell. It has been such a pleasure working with the individuals of RADmag towards creating this publication. Maxwell N. Burnstein is the Editorin-Chief of VULKAN magazine and a globally published handmade collage artist located in Toronto, Ontario.

Brandon Chan is a designer who is inspired by visual graphics and spatial exploration. He is an alumni of Ryerson University’s Interior Design program, and over his four years has received many awards for his work and involvement with the school. He has worked for numerous leading Canadian KLZPNU ÄYTZ VU WYVQLJ[Z HJYVZZ 5VY[O America, Europe, and the Middle East, and uses the knowledge gained from these international endeavors to fuel his current design practice.

Rudra Chauhan is a recent graduate of Ryerson University’s School of Interior Design, and is currently working at )\YKPÄSLR H ;VYVU[V IHZLK KLZPNU ÄYT Originally from Ahmedabad, India - a city which was an architectural playground for Le Corbusier, Louis Khan, and Frank Lloyd Wright - Rudra was fascinated and inspired by the buildings, as well as the spatial relationship between the built and natural environments.

A recent Bachelor of Design graduate from Ryerson University, Maxwell has received the opportunity to create artworks for 50+ projects across five continents. His clients include Elite Models NYC, Toronto, and Miami, Flaunt Magazine, and Fashion Glossary UK. He has created dozens of editorial spreads, has been selected for an exhibition at FIT Museum in NYC, and has also begun working on an exhibition of original works. With a global social media following of 20K+ unique users, working with only globally established talent and having strong ties with global press, Maxwell N. Lucinda McGroarty is currently a Masters of Design student at Emily Carr University in Vancouver, British Columbia, and graduated from Ryerson University’s School of Interior Design in the Spring of 2013. During her four years at Ryerson University, Lucinda became increasingly interested in the profound impact that design can have on all aspects of daily living. As a fresh undergraduate student, she watched [OL KVJ\TLU[HY` 6IQLJ[PĂ„LK and embraced the words of Paola Antonelli: “I want designers to be the culture generators... they should become fundamental bricks in any kind VM WVSPJ`THRPUN LŃœVY[ š

Kate O’Reilly is a 2014 graduate from Ryerson University’s Fashion Communication program. While completing her degree, O’Reilly began working as a freelance fashion stylist. By second year she was signed with Making Of, a production agency based in Vienna, Austria, where she lived and worked before attending Ryerson.

Hugo Soo is a recent graduate of Ryerson University’s School of Interior Design, and currently works as a designer at DIALOG participating in several hotel and hospitality projects.

Lucinda is fascinated with the idea of cross-pollination: designers working alongside other industries to create change. Currently, she is involved in a new interdisciplinary project, and is using her design knowledge in collaboration with the healthcare sector. Lucinda is in the process of employing co-creation methods to aid in the design of a tool to be utilized by Canadians living with type 1 diabetes. Through peer-to-peer communication,

As a designer Hugo believes that design decisions should be based on H M\ZPVU VM KPŃœLYLU[ OVSPZ[PJ L_WLYPLUJLZ He is driven by the ideation of a project and concept development. Hugo also feels that great projects are often built with a concrete foundation of research, or questions that are meant to be answered during the creative process. X is a unisex clothing collection for the Fall/Winter 2015 season, and is named after the shared chromosomes between men and women.

Stephanie executed this collection by designing each garment to be genderless, and attempted to blur the line between masculine and feminine fashion. Tricolour Movement documents the relationship between individuals and urban space, showing how people’s actions reflect design. The architecture and design of a building form a language, which is then absorbed and understood intuitively by the people who interact with the space. This subconscious conversation between the mind and the architecture then manifests itself through individuals’ interactions as they navigate the environment.

In Courage of Love, [OLYL HYL Ä]L LU]PYVUTLU[Z that represent the possible scenarios that may overwhelm love-seekers throughout their emotional journey. These environments are experienced one after the other, and are YLWYLZLU[LK [OYV\NO KPќLYLU[ Z[Y\J[\YLZ HUK ZPT\SH[LK ZWHJLZ ;OLZL Ä]L ZJLUHYPVZ PUJS\KL! 1. Encountering each other during an uneasy time in life.

The project site is a ruin nunnery on an island in the Venice lagoon. With the sea level rising in recent decades, this island has been divided into two islets and the goal was to create a new environment. The concept was inspired by Noah’s Ark, and the remains of the colossal structure is applied to the site to create a connection between the two islands which represents the connection between two lovers. More importantly, this represents the spirituality of love.

STEPHANIE MOSCALL-VAREY NORFOLK

Stephanie Moscall-Varey is a designer from the small town of Port Dover in Norfolk County, Ontario. She is inspired by the beauty of natural structures, human’s interaction with nature, and the contrast between city and country life. Stephanie strives to experiment with shape through the use of bonded textile manipulation, and her goal is to create an interesting visual contrast between movement, WH[WXUH DQG FRORU 6KH H[SUHVVHV KHUVHOI WKURXJK ZHDUDEOH DUW ZKHUH WKH IHPDOH ƂJXUH LV KHU FDQYDV and believes that the body brings life to her extravagant and abstract designs.

Norfolk by Moskal is a collection based on two concepts merged together: the geographic area of Norfolk County and the art of natural architecture. It is the synthesis of these two ideas that sparked the inspiration for the Norfolk collection. This Art-to-Wear womenswear collection is for Fall/Winter 2015, and focuses on the shapes and structures that convey the fantasy of a beautiful savage. Norfolk is to be seen as a work of art with fashion as the medium. The designs are inspired by various aspects of the small southwestern Ontario county, including the vegetation of the Carolinian forest, and the popular local sport VM O\U[PUN ( KPNP[HS WYPU[ VM ^PU[LY JHTV\Ă…HNL is incorporated into the garments, as well as thickly woven fabrics with raw edges to mimic the rough wilderness. Necklines are high and structured to represent the peer through hunting ISPUKZ ;OL V\[Ă„[Z OH]L THU` SH`LYZ ^P[O SLH[OLY

accents to call upon the heritage of historical Canadian hunting wear, and also feature random HYLHZ VM NVSK MVPSPUN [V ZPNUPM` [OL ZVPS HUK Ă„S[O VM the environment in a glamorous way. The shape of natural architecture further inspired the curved visuals and contrast of textures in the garments. The colours of the collection are centered on neutrals that embrace femininity while contrasting with the rigid attitude of the garment. Although inspiration from its namesake ran deep for the Norfolk JVSSLJ[PVU H ZWLJPĂ„J WLYZVUH PZ mainly what guided the creative process. NICK DOWNIE FABRICATED NATURE

Nick Downie is currently a third-year Photography student at Ryerson University. The primary inspiration for his photographic practice is his strong connection with the environment, which he developed at a young age. His work focuses on man’s material wealth, the growth of metropolitan cities, cars’ and industries’ affects on the planet, and the overall negative pressure the human race puts on nature. :RUNLQJ PRVWO\ ZLWK VWLOO OLIH KLV PDLQ FKDOOHQJH LV WR WDNH IRXQG REMHFWV ZKLFK PLJKW RQ Ć‚UVW PHHWLQJ have no apparent dialogue, and breathe life into them until they can communicate an underlying message. Though Nick creates work that is strongly centered on environmental issues, he puts HTXDO IRFXV RQ WKH DHVWKHWLFV RI KLV SLHFHV WR GLUHFWO\ UHĆƒHFW FRQWHPSRUDU\ VRFLHW\ +H VKRZV through his unique visual language the value of beauty, the need for environmental awareness, and the capacity to look at environmental issues in creative ways.

The alarming rate at which society and overindustrialization are depleting the world’s natural resources inspired Fabricated Nature. The purpose of this series is to resurrect a forgotten wonder of the natural world, and experience JVU]LU[PVUHS HUPTHSZ PU HU LU[PYLS` KPŃœLYLU[ MVYT The images presented are both cultural and meditative, and question what people will miss by tampering with the environment. In each stilllife, the natural world is represented through completely unnatural elements. These elements speak metaphorically about their inherent worth as seen through the eyes of a Western consumer.

The tools and parts that make up the creatures also indicate human’s inability to manufacture nature. It becomes clear that the closer people come to mimicking the natural world, the further they are separated from it. Fabricated Nature is also a politically charged work, as it rejects the industrial modes of assembly line production. The series embraces the tradition of hand-crafted objects as viable methods of self-sustainability, and cements memories of the past that are necessary for life in the future.

Jeesun Lee, the creator of Muskode Men’s street couture contemporary apparel is a recent Ryerson University graduate. Born in Seoul, South Korea and raised in Vacouver, Canada, she has both East $VLDQ DQG 1RUWK $PHULFDQ KHULWDJHV :KLOH UHƃHFWLQJ WKLV LQWHUHVWLQJ PL[ RI GLYHUVH KHULWDJHV LQ her work, her focus is artistic aesthetic, uniqueness, comfort, and quality. She is currently working as a freelance patternmaking contractor for a private fashion boutique, but is looking to build her own fashion business in menswear, and hopes to collaborate with young talent who share similar visions and goals.

Muskode (a hybrid word of “Musk” and “Dress Code”) is a men’s contemporary collection for Fall/Winter 2015. The collection is simultaneously masculine, beautiful, sentimental, and somewhat nostalgic, and the theme is inspired by the junction of historical and modern Seoul, South Korea. Katya Koroscii A SIREN’S GAZE

A recent Ryerson alumni, Katya Koroscii continues to explore the fashion industry through her photographic practice. Katya’s work deals with a sensitive portrayal of the human subject by challenging and expanding the ideas of femininity, masculinity, and beauty.

A Siren’s Gaze is an editorial fashion series that was inspired by Romanticist art. Priscilla Lee is a recent graduate of Ryerson’s School of Interior Design. She is greatly inspired by her peers at school, and the surrounding architecture and structures of Toronto. As an interior designer, Priscilla aims to create environments that provide a multi-sensory experience for individuals, all while focusing on aesthetics and spatial design.

By observing the constant change in water levels, individuals become aware of the powerful consequences that water can have.

This spiritual experience can be generally represented as the relationship between humans and a “higher power”. Nature plays a dominant role in all living things, and can be argued as one of the highest powers that is tangible to humans. In nature, the element of water is always present and is vital for life on earth. Humans have been abusing water throughout history, but need to understand the importance of this element; they need to understand their relationship with it and ;OL ÄUHS L_WLYPLUJL VM [OL ZWHJL PZ PUZWPYLK with the rest of nature. by the feeling of submission and acceptance. The creative team behind the newly established Three Eighths label is Warren Scott of Victoria, B.C. and Daniel Finlan of Peterborough, Ontario. The duo met while studying Fashion Design at Ryerson University in Toronto. Upon discovering a shared design sensibility, and a complementary skillset, they decided to create a capsule menswear collection together.

This capsule collection is based on the idea that ¸>L ^LHY SH`LYZ [OH[ NV VU HUK JVTL Vќ K\YPUN one’s personal style grows and develops over the course of the day. There is a simplicity and time. Lyndsey Constable is a recent graduate from Ryerson University’s Photography program, and specializes in shooting portraiture to create visual composites and narratives. Lyndsey is interested in the constructed image, and the relationship between and among photography, sculpture, and drama. Melissa Poon is in her fourth year at the Ryerson School of Interior Design. She came to be interested LQ WKH GHVLJQ Ć‚HOG LQ KHU HOHPHQWDU\ \HDUV WDNLQJ RQ YLVXDO DUWV DV ZHOO DV DVSLULQJ WR EH DQ $UFKLWHFW Following this ‘creative’ incentive, she became an art major in high school, and was soon captivated by the diverse creative and technical elements of the Interior Design industry. In recent years, her design approach has shifted to take on a bold, simple, and sophisticated quality. She is inspired by architect legends such as Kengo Kuma, Tadao Ando, Mies Van der Rohe, and Santiago Calatrava. Although her design process and implementations are far from perfect, she LV FRQWLQXDOO\ VWULYLQJ WR Ć‚QG D XQLTXH GHVLJQ LGHQWLW\ ZLWK DQ RSHQ PLQGHGQHVV IRU DQ\ GHVLJQ inspiration around the world and from the past. Her current aspirations are to one day use her NQRZOHGJH DQG EDFNJURXQG RI GHVLJQ WR VWDUW D QHZ Ć‚UP GHVLJQ Ć‚OP VHWV IRU EORFNEXVWHU PRYLHV and perhaps even construct housing and amenities for developing countries.

Carved from a single piece of basswood, this ‘unique’ spoon was designed to represent the distinctive methods of the local Stop Community Food Centre. This organization is not a typical MVVK IHUR P[ Z[YP]LZ [V PUJYLHZL HJJLZZ [V OLHS[O` MVVK PU H KPNUPĂ„LK THUULY HUK KPTPUPZO [OL stigma associated with charity.

Food Center supports the community in an PUUV]H[P]L ^H` <USPRL JVTTVU MVVK IHURZ [OH[ provide canned foods in a relatively degrading manner, the Stop’s mission is to change society’s false perceptions about food insecurity by conscientiously supporting members with fresh food.

Inspired by this unique philosophy of the Stop, the predominant feature of the spoon’s design is the way in which the handle supports the rest of [OL \[LUZPS <USPRL JVTTVU ZWVVUZ [OL OHUKSL º^YHWZ HYV\UK [OL JHUVL ZOHWLK IV^S ;OPZ generates an illusion: while it appears that the design is comprised of two separate elements, the entire spoon is a singular component. The way the handle uniquely supports the spoon bowl is parallel to how the Stop Community

+LZPNU 7YVJLZZ! -YVT H ZPUNSL ISVJR VM basswood, the rough form of the spoon was cut several times through with a bandsaw, then manually carved into with various chisels to provide detail, and subsequently endured U\TLYV\Z OV\YZ VM ZHUKPUN ;OL Ă„UHS MVYT ^HZ treated with tung oil to provide it with its stained quality.
