WELCOME & CONTENTS

WELCOME TO THE STRUCTURAL TIMBER AWARDS 2020 WINNERS BROCHURE Now in it’s sixth year and taking place against the backdrop of COVID-19, this year’s Winner’s Brochure will guide you through the impressive portfolio of projects, technologies, individuals and organisations that have been crowned ‘Winner’ and/or ‘Highly Commended’ at the 2020 Structural Timber Awards. The year’s finalists, highly commended and winners have encompassed acclaimed architects, engineers and developers, as well as innovators who are new to the construction industry and have produced outstanding systems and solutions. As we have come to expect, the 2020 Structural Timber Awards attracted a rich vein of entries spanning architectural design and engineering projects, each of which uses timber technology to reap numerous benefits that would not be possible with any other structural material. These projects are representative of a construction industry that is now embracing digital tools and smart technologies. The timber industry is experiencing increasing demand, meaning that the Structural Timber Awards are more pivotal than ever. Amid the call for advanced digital design tools, inspiring architecture, cost savings, maximised sustainable credentials and health benefits that are achieved by a breadth of structural timber solutions, these are the projects and systems that push boundaries for UK construction. Once again, our fantastic sponsors have made contributions that are powering the continuing success of the awards. A huge thank you to each organisation that has sponsored the 2020 ceremony. Another big thank you goes to the Structural Timber Awards Judging Panel, whose task is so incredibly difficult. The standard of entries goes to show just how much competition there is in the timber industry. Ranking the projects has required an intense level of knowledge and consideration. Thank you to our judges for sharing their expertise in evaluating each inspiring award submission. And of course, thank you to all of our entrants, who really make the Structural Timber Awards the renowned success that it is today. You are the ones that provide us with projects to celebrate and share with the wider construction community to demonstrate what is achievable using sustainable timber systems and innovative techniques. STRUCTURAL TIMBER AWARDS 2020

MAGGIE’S LEEDS WINNER

WINNER OF WINNERS & HEALTHCARE PROJECT OF THE YEAR HEATHERWICK STUDIO

Heatherwick Studio was commissioned by Maggie’s, the cancer care charity, to develop a new centre on the site of St. James’s Hospital in Leeds, UK. Providing free practical and emotional support for people with cancer and their friends and families, the 462 sqm centre is designed as a group of three large-scale planters, built on a sloped site. Drawing upon the philosophy of Maggie’s and the belief that great design can help people feel better, Maggie’s Leeds uses several ‘healthy’ materials and energy-saving techniques.

14

Maggie’s brief was to create an inspiring home that visitors from varied backgrounds would ‘not have dared build themselves’. As well as serving 110 visitors a day, the studio wanted the centre to preserve the hospital’s only green space by making it more accessible and enjoyable. The site was the last patch of greenery at the hospital – a grassy hill next to the car park, bounded by roads on two sides and surrounded by large buildings. The six-metre difference in level across the site would typically

dictate a building dug into the slope but instead, they chose to follow its natural contours, so that at the highest point, visitors would have views of the Yorkshire Dales, and a connection with the world beyond the hospital. Heatherwick Studio knew that Maggie’s considered the kitchen to be the ‘heart’ of the centre so this informed the programming of the space with more social spaces for group activities including a library and exercise room surrounding the kitchen. By designing three ‘planters’, each of these could enclose a counselling room.

STRUCTURAL TIMBER AWARDS 2020

Why was timber specified as the central construction method of the project? The complexities of the compact sloped site and contaminated land from previous construction on an adjacent site, would have required expensive and significant piling into the natural bedrock. Instead, it was decided to create a raft foundation which lightly floated over the contaminated land spreading the load across its surface. The lightweight properties of timber were an important factor in achieving this foundation. Additionally, timber’s good insulating properties enabled the structure to run continuously from inside to out without requiring complicated cold bridging mitigation.

inherently possess the domestic and biophilic sensibilities that the studio wanted to permeate throughout every element of Maggie’s Leeds.

MEP Consultant Max Fordham Consulting

The centre’s interior explores everything that is often missed in healing environments: natural and tactile materials, soft lighting, and a variety of spaces designed to encourage social opportunities as well as quiet contemplation.

The site was also encircled by the hospital’s “blue” route which had to be kept clear to enable emergency vehicles to get access to A&E at all times. Therefore they could not afford to accommodate heavy lifting machinery and had to limit the disruption of deliveries to a minimum. A prefabricated timber system solved nearly all of site and design’s logistical complexities rather than creating any.

The studio also designed two tables, inspired by the building’s timber fins and built from cork and engineered beech timber, which reside in the centre’s heart.

With a timber structure, Heatherwick Studio could easily translate the design’s geometric form into a series of radiating fins. The structural fins are intentionally left exposed as they

The rooftop garden, designed by landscape designers Balston Aguis, is inspired by Yorkshire woodlands and features native English species of plants, alongside areas of evergreen to provide warmth in the winter months. Inspired by Maggie Keswick Jencks’ love of gardening, visitors are encouraged to participate in the care of the 23,000 bulbs and 17,000 plants on site. The team designed a structure that could be built off-site and assembled quickly on a concrete slab and retaining wall, with minimal disruption. The prefabricated insulated timber cassettes were manufactured in Switzerland and fixed together on site in just eight weeks. These are supported by glulam fins, whose modulations give the feeling of trunks rising up from the ground to support the gardens overhead.

REPUBLIC MASTERPLAN WINNER

SOLID WOOD PROJECT OF THE YEAR & COMMERCIAL PROJECT OF THE YEAR HEYNE TILLETT STEEL & STUDIO RHE

The Republic Masterplan comprises the retrofit of two existing office buildings alongside revitalised public realm. The project uses timber to deliver a next generation workplace for creative enterprises. The team undertook extensive archive investigations and material testing at the outset of the project which revealed detailed information about the building and its capacity for reuse. To extract the maximum value from the existing building, lightweight prefabricated engineered timber panels have been used to refurbish and extend the areas of the two existing office buildings. The team worked in close collaboration with the client, architect and timber subcontractors, to propose timber structures from a very early stage. Spruce timber and Siberian Larch timber, used respectively at the Import and Export buildings were carefully chosen for their pale aesthetic qualities, resulting in refined and tactile interior spaces.

16

Sustainability was key to the brief and the use of timber across the masterplan has significant lowered material waste and embodied energy. The completed buildings both measure well within the RIBA 2030 Target for non-domestic structures. As timber is a natural carbon sequester, for both buildings until demolition the structures store more than 1.5 times the carbon used to build them. Robert Wolstenholme, Founder & CEO - Trilogy Property: “Structural Timber is used extensively at Republic and has been fundamentally important to achieving our goal of minimising carbon emissions as we complete the radical overhaul of our buildings to create a next-generation work campus for creative talent and innovation. Studio RHE and Heyne Tillett Steel have identified strategic opportunities to improve the quality and quantum of space at Republic and the team’s skilful design for

RHS GARDEN BRIDGEWATER WINNER - PROJECT OF THE YEAR: HODDER & PARTNERS, HESS TIMBER & BAM CONSTRUCTION WINNER - ARCHITECT OF THE YEAR: HODDER & PARTNERS

The ‘Welcome Building’ at RHS Garden Bridgewater is designed predominantly as one open space, allowing the visitors to flow between the various uses and functions. All public elements are contained under a single overarching timber diagrid roof, supported on structural glued laminated timber columns, allowing the space to flex in response to seasonal demands. The roof structure consists of three different timber construction components: ‘cigar-shaped’ glued laminated timber columns, timber diagrid cassettes with diagonally arranged inner grillages and straight outer glued laminated timber rafters as well as cross laminated timber panels to tie the cassettes together.

18

The sanded “cigar-shaped” glued laminated timber columns rest on 16 reinforced concrete columns, each of which has a diameter of 450 mm. The glued laminated timber columns measure 3850 mm in length and 300 mm in width (in their centre) and are tapered to 200 mm at both ends to ensure an attractive, filigree and light overall appearance of the roof construction. The columns are structurally relevant and support the entire roof, which measures 2160 m² in total. The timber diagrid consists of individual cassettes dividing the whole roof into 6-metre grids. Each individual cassette measures 6 metres on the long and 3 metres on the short edge and consists of diagonally arranged inner grillages

and straight outer rafters which provide stability and bracing to the whole roof structure. This straightforward grid structure results in roof dimensions of 24 metres (8 x 3) in width and 90 metres (15 x 6) in length. Sustainability is at the heart of the proposals and embedded in the work of the RHS, the building benefits from rainwater harvesting, green roofs, ground source heat pumps, underfloor heating and cooling and natural cross ventilation. The visually impressive use of timber as the material of choice in the roof construction provide a constant reminder of the environmental aims as well as sequestering an approximated 350 tonnes of carbon into the structure of the building.

solution to control displacements and stresses induced into the historic tunnel located at shallow depth beneath the Sport Hall. An Embodied Carbon assessment was undertaken at the beginning of the design stages to enable the design team to reduce embodied impacts. This was achieved through specification of a glulam and CLT frame and generally very lightweight and low embodied carbon finishes, with as much of the structure being used as the final finish as possible. The building is connected to the King’s Cross site-wide energy network, which includes centralised heating and cooling networks, providing 99% of hot water demand across the estate. The Energy Centre also generates 79% of the total power demand across the estate with estimated carbon savings of over 45%.

PROJECT TEAM Main Contractor BAM Construction The 67-acre King’s Cross estate, located to the north of King’s Cross and St Pancras Stations; is one of the largest and most exciting redevelopments in London. An underused industrial wasteland has been transformed into an integral and thriving destination. There are three shallow parallel tunnels directly beneath the site which are used by all trains accessing King’s Cross station. Building Q2 is a new-build community leisure centre for Camden which in the interim, will offer a Construction Skills Centre whilst the Kings Cross development completes.

20

Timber was utilised for Q2 building as a direct result of what was buried in the ground. It had to be as light as possible due to the loading constraints of the tunnels. Timber was therefore chosen due to its inherent low density in comparison with other standard materials. The linear nature of the CLT walls enables the redistribution of the gravity loadings by spreading uniformly the mass of the building, which was a significant benefit compared with other more standard frame solutions which would result in high concentrated peaks. This combined with the lower density of timber provided the perfect

YORK HOUSE WINNER - CLIENT OF THE YEAR: THE OFFICE GROUP HIGHLY COMMENDED COMMERCIAL PROJECT OF THE YEAR

EURBAN, WEBB YATES ENGINEERS & DMFK ARCHITECTS

York House is located on Pentonville Road, set back quite a distance from the road, its dark brick façade with small windows gave the original building an unwelcoming appearance. Situated only five minutes’ walk from Kings Cross Station it was a prime site for redevelopment by the clients The Office Group (TOG). TOG asked their architects to transform and extend the existing somber 1980s block into a modern, light filled co-working space with state of the art facilities. dMFK Architects’ ingenious solution was to extend the anonymous block, not only upwards - but outwards, towards the street. not only for the load bearing capacity but also for the fire performance as they are left exposed.

There was a clear architectural intent to achieve a seamless junction between the existing concrete floor slabs and the new CLT floor slabs at the front of the building. The meeting of these 2 raw materials was to be celebrated and therefore left exposed.

PROJECT TEAM

The front extension houses a double height reception area on the ground floor and 3 floors of office space above. The exposed glulam columns and CLT soffit imbue the space with a warmth and intimacy despite the height of the space and visibility of the street. The glulam columns are 280 x 220mm in section and are over 6m in height on the ground floor, while on the floors above they are half this height, at nearly 3m. The large sections were required

OURHOME WINNER - LOW ENERGY PROJECT OF THE YEAR: IDEAL MODULAR HOMES & SHEDKM WINNER - PRODUCT INNOVATION AWARD: IDEAL MODULAR

Local authorities and housing associations are under significant pressures from the government to meet affordable housing needs quickly as demand for housing increases every year, without compromising on sustainability and design. OURhome was developed with this in mind. It can help housing associations meet quotas with high quality housing and help build communities through clever design options. OURhome meets operational Net Zero Carbon requirements, with energyefficient heating systems significantly reducing energy consumption resulting

24

in lower fuel bills by up to 50% for residents. Ideal’s modular homes also provide exceptional U-values, unbeatable air permeability and tripleglazed windows and doors, improving acoustics and thermal comfort. This, combined with solar PV and air source heat pumps, means the homes have the capacity to operate at net-zero carbon. To offset carbon emissions in construction, Ideal Modular Homes uses responsibly sourced timber frames or CLT. The high-quality construction of new homes under the initiative will make them more cost-effective to run, passing on considerable energy

savings to residents, while helping improve the sustainability of new build homes. The use of CLT offers a number of advantages, reducing time on site, sound and waste. The material is highly versatile and lighter than steel or concrete, ensuring lower carbon emissions. The development of OURhome was a collaborative process aimed at housing associations and developers to help combat the current UK housing crisis, taking around one year to design and develop the idea, with the initiative launching at the end of 2019.

STROUD CHAPEL WINNER - ENGINEER OF THE YEAR: CORBETT & TASKER HIGHLY COMMENDED - PROJECT OF THE YEAR: ZÜBLIN TIMBER

Stroud Chapel is a new building for the Christian Community and follows their design guidance for new churches; symmetry, lighting and movement along an east-west axis with the internal walls and roof being, paradoxically, calm but lively. Structurally the project uses CLT panels in a truly unique and innovative way; the team wanted to create a pure, elegant form internally, where walls flowed into a ceiling with no downstand beams. To this end they explored how CLT could be used as ‘folded plates’, with structural efficiency and elegance obtained by a geometry which created a lively dynamic feel as well as a timeless stillness. The structural folded plates are elegantly proportioned and allow the smooth flow of forces from the vaulted ceiling to the ground. The load is shared with an arrangement of glulam ribs, concealed above the CLT panels, at panel joints.

The timber vault is exposed within the church and is dramatically highlighted by distinctively shaped windows. The unique shape was developed in close collaboration with the acoustician, following the best tradition of cathedral building. The resonance of music and spoken word was modelled during the project’s design development, informing the final geometry.

Revd Tom Ravetz, Leader - Christian Community UK: “The impression of the space is one of breath-taking beauty and simplicity. I am sure that it will be a wonderful space to worship in.”

This low embodied carbon building used the latest computer aided design in its design and fabrication. During construction, the permanent glulam frame was installed preceding the roof panels and allowed for the contractor to negate the need for extensive temporary falsework to form the vaulted roof. Reducing the erection of the superstructure to 8 weeks, despite the complex geometry.

Architect Nicolas Pople Architect

The project was delivered within budget and was regarded as good-value for the dramatic space created.

HOPE RISE WINNER SOCIAL HOUSING PROJECT OF THE YEAR: ZED PODS

Providing affordable and low-carbon housing remains a fundamental challenge to Bristol City Council (BCC). They wanted to build high-quality, energy-efficient accommodations for young people in city centre location in alignment with their Climate Emergency Declaration. “Hope Rise”, in true collaboration with BCC, BHF & YMCA, has been designed as the first 100% affordable & zerocarbon housing scheme, built above existing car park in Chalks Road. In order to create the first 100% affordable and low carbon housing development, the team used CLT as the main building material for 9 X 1 bed units. The CLT system allowed

30

them to construct comfortable and sustainable buildings quickly, safely and economically. It also offered better embodied carbon benefits to achieve sustainable development in line with the declared climate emergency by Bristol City Council in 2018. • The structure represents an embodied carbon dioxide sink, rather than having a high carbon footprint. Most CLT processes are also closed loop, with waste products used in the production of heat and power. • CLT offsite modular homes are inherently stiff and better suit for moving volumetric buildings. CLT has been used due to its strength and dimensional stability.

SOCIAL HOUSING SPONSOR

• All walls are structural plates are accurately cut so it is easier to create an airtight structure & reduce thermal bridging. CLT can help regulate the indoor climate when left exposed. • The CLT has 60 minutes fire resistance accreditation and impregnated to achieve class ‘O’ rating. • The walls, floors and ceiling are solid structures around 100mm thick, made of 1 piece of solid timber (maximum panel size is 3m x 16m). This large panel format that reduces construction processes, speeds up time in the factory and reduces material interfaces in construction which is highly scalable.

PROJECT TEAM

Designed by CSK Architects & UCL Structural & Fire Engineering Arup Cork Supply Amorim Isolamentos Cork CNC Fabrication Wup Doodle Cork House is the first of its kind, with monolithic walls and corbelled roof pyramids made almost entirely from solid load-bearing blocks of cork in combination with structural timber components. Its distinctive structural form and atmospheric spaces are the result of a whole life approach to environmental sustainability. The project began as an inventive response to the complexity of layered building envelopes which typically consist of a wide range of materials, products and systems – instead, Cork House is the result of an attempt to radically simplify the building envelope

using only cork and timber. Designed and built as a prefabricated kit-of-parts, the blocks of expanded cork are easily assembled by hand without mortar or glue, like an oversized organic LEGO® system. This highly innovative form of plant-based construction has resulted in a building that is carbon negative at completion with extremely low whole life carbon of 618kgCO2e/m2 (as per British Standard BS EN 15978). Cork House establishes legible links between the design of the building and the ecological impacts of each stage of its life – an overarching ‘form follows lifecycle’ approach that emerged during the project.

WATER TOWER WINNER CUSTOM & SELF BUILD PROJECT OF THE YEAR: TONKIN LIU

SELF BUILD HOUSING SPONSOR

factors continued to drive the project: the client’s sustainable and material agenda, respect for the utilitarian character of the existing structure, and the desire to connect to the specific natural characteristics of place. Below the dark rendered tank, the entire steel frame structure is clad in light corrugated metal panels whose predominantly blank surface makes refers to the Castle Acre’s historic ruins. CLT panels infills in the steel frame to form wire-brushed timber panelled sleeping chambers, whose fully-glazed north elevations face away from the village and the summer sun, to enjoy the play of light and wind across the field of barley. Smaller side opening lights to east and west provide high and low cross ventilation.

The water tower has stood alone in a field marking the end of the village that it has served for many years. The storm-grey coloured tank is held aloft by a light skeletal frame, the very heavy sits upon the very light in a feat of engineering. Just as many agricultural buildings on the perimeter of the village have been brought back into the life of the village through their conversion into domestic properties, the water tower that once provided the castle acre with water has been brought back life.

The clients engaged the local community in the tower’s preservation, restoration, and conversion to a family home, drawing great support from them. The planning application attracted 25 declarations of support and only 2 objections. Subsequently, the project’s self-build construction phase also drew support, skills, and labour from the community. To stay within the budget and the ethos of the project, the client became the project manager. Three interwoven

In the stair tower a cantilevered CLT stair forms a compression spiral that stabilises the historic steel frame structure by delivering wind loads to the ground. Like the centre of a sea shell, the spiralling treads give stiffness to the entire structure, enabling the four-storey high shear walls to be ultra-thin. The structure has minimal windows with a central sky oculus to emphasis its verticality nature. The double balusters made from reclaimed tie rods from the water tank, and the double timber steps both help to amplify the sculptural form of the compression spiral.

NORTHSTOWE EDUCATION CAMPUS WINNER EDUCATION PROJECT OF THE YEAR: KIER CONSTRUCTION, EURBAN & FRANK SHAW ASSOCIATES

Northstowe Education Campus is located at the heart of the new town situated north of Cambridge. The £42M campus consists of a secondary school with accompanying SEN along with enhanced sports and leisure facilities to serve the growing new community. An exemplar design was required to suit Cambridgeshire County Council’s aspirations and the demands of the local masterplan. Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) was the chosen structural solution for three reasons; speed of construction, sustainability and interior design. CLT enabled fast track construction, with good thermal properties, low air leakage and a natural aesthetic where it’s left exposed. As the programme was extremely challenging, the team reviewed

34

three possible modern methods of construction namely; precast concrete, volumetric modular and CLT. With constraints imposed on the other methods, CLT was chosen to meet the environmental credentials for reductions in noise, dust, construction deliveries and site waste. The school has been developed in close consultation with the School sponsor, Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust alongside Cambridgeshire County Council and Homes England. The design has been tailored to suit the Trust’s vision as well as allowing for future flexibility. The use of CLT enabled the team to better our Air Permeability Target by 35% on the secondary school. Set at 5 m³/ (h.m² at 50Pa) for both Schools we achieved 3.22. This allows a significant

EDUCATION SPONSOR

saving in ongoing energy wastage through air leakage. The use of CLT also achieved significant net locked-in carbon savings at source, equivalent to nearly 3,000 tonnes of carbon. Alison Revell, Education Capital Projects Manager: “I wanted to convey my thanks to all of [the team for their] expertise in delivering a truly exceptional school that will hopefully make many more visitors say ‘wow’ as they walk from space to space. From the frosted glass in the hydrotherapy pool which illuminates the room beautifully, to the cut outs in the dining hall walls …and the impressive vista sitting on community square. It is truly an asset that the residents of Northstowe should be proud of.”

What makes the Hybrid range unlike any other insulation system? Maybe because it’s cleaner, with less waste and environmental impact. Maybe because it’s leaner, saving space and project costs. Or maybe it’s just because it creates a reduction in thermal bridging that provides the most impressive SAP improvements. Whichever way you look at it, the Hybrid range is the future of insulation.

It’s time to make the change. To find out more visit insulation-actis.com or call 01249 462888

DELAMERE VISITOR CENTRE WINNER INSTALLER OF THE YEAR: PLOTFORM

Delamere Visitor Centre, Cheshire is an impressive CLT and glulam structure erected to a high standard in just three weeks. The structure comprises of a CLT and Glulam framed building with a mixture of duo-pitch roof profiles and includes a number of different ridge heights which Plotform installed. The time scale and logistics to the project were key due to the CLT and Glulam being imported. The building on plan forms an L shape with a cafe area forming the shorter leg and a mixture of meeting/conference rooms and a reception and toilet block forming the longer leg. The general form for the superstructure is a pin jointed glulam beam and post structure with CLT walls forming

36

the perimeter walls. The roof deck is formed from CLT roof panels that are supported by the glulam frame. The CLT is designed to span beyond the external walls and parapet walls in order to form the perimeter cantilever detail. The installation sequence was essential especially with the trusses because if any members were installed out of sequence, then it would prevent the installation of following members. For instance, the glulam beam and the roof panel where phase 1 meets phase 2 had to be temporarily left out to ensure the truss could be lowered into position. Sequence of the trusses was critical. Aside from the main glulam primary frame, there are additional secondary glulam beams required to the perimeter

of the building in order to provide support to the roof structure where full height glazing is present. There are also some additional glulam beams over the meeting/conference areas which are required to support moveable partition walls. Plotform’s operatives completed the STA Timber Frame Competency Awards at the beginning of 2018. They are committed to ensuring that new operatives undertake this scheme as part of their training. The team have NVQ’s in carpentry and steel erecting which demonstrates their skill set is raised to an acceptable level of competence.

Ramboll have consistently proven their capabilities as one of the leading pioneering consultancies in timber engineering and have been instrumental in the conception and delivery of impressive and inspiring timber projects. This is across a wide array of building sectors, from commercial and office, groundbreaking modular projects and cultural settings. Ramboll actively encourages the uptake of timber structures through University lecturing, research and innovation and have left a lasting impact on the industry with a demonstrable reduction of carbon emissions.

38

In delivering the Stora Enso Timber Office Concept, Ramboll have led the way in securing the place of timber construction as a mainstream material in the office sector. The concept was formed in a way that allows flexibility in design and inherent adaptability in a project life-cycle, bringing clarity to timber design in an office context. By driving this message, it allows the user; from client to contractor, to have greater confidence at an earlier stage, thus driving a positive perception of the material in the industry. Ramboll was also instrumental in developing the modular timber guide for NuBuild and Swan Homes. The guide provides tools for designers to develop their

own projects in modular timber, whilst providing information on the principles of how each module is made, transported and assembled at every stage of the design development. This helps to give greater confidence in the systems, meaning their adoption is more likely and the end product is of high quality. Ramboll have made a lasting impact on the built environment, current and future carbon emissions as well as inspiring positive change to the understanding and appreciation to mental health.

EILEAN DONAN CASTLE WINNER RETAIL & LEISURE PROJECT OF THE YEAR: STORA ENSO, ANTA ARCHITECTS & EURBAN

Eilean Donan Castle is one of Scotland’s most iconic castles. It is situated at the Kyle of Localsh in the Scottish Highlands and was originally inhabited in the 6th Century with the first fortified castle built on the site in the 13th Century. Architect Lachie Stewart has a long standing family relationship with the Castle. His great grandparents, Craig and Bella Gilstrap, restored it in the Arts & Crafts style during the 1920s and Lachie has been directly involved for almost 30 years since completing restoration works in the early 1990s then designing the first visitor centre in 1998/9 and this building’s subsequent extension in 2005. Visitors to the Castle currently number around 600,000 annually and have increased hugely in the past five years which has necessitated further extension of the visitor areas. The new

40

visitor centre creates a protected inner space for the Castle in its exposed maritime position. The original ‘U’ shaped visitor centre was open to the sea and a prevailing wind from the south west and this has been screened off by the new building which creates a full enclosure to the courtyard and provides valuable shelter for those buying tickets. The pitched roof cantilevers almost 3 metres at both ends of the building and features a large roof light at its apex. Two deep glulam beams support the roof and roof light and give it a distinctive character.

to be a reference to the castle. All the Castle’s other buildings are very simple in terms of their roofscape and their vernacular design is almost agricultural and the new extension embraces and develops this theme.

Internally the CLT has been left exposed throughout with surface mounted services giving an industrial feel which contrasts well with the historic context of the castle. A key driver in the design was for the building to be ‘subservient’ to the castle because the castle is the hero. It was important that the new building shouldn’t try to be ‘baronial’, or

An exemplary piece of contemporary architecture, Copperas Reach is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and capitalises on beautiful surroundings and stunning views. Intended as a holiday home, the customers wanted a sustainable, low energy property that responded to the area. Built with a timber frame and covered in wood cladding, this home uses as much FSC sustainable timber as possible; firstly in the plywood boxes that make up the Facit Chassis™ and secondly in the red cedar cladding that

42

is used for the exterior of this home. The timber frame Facit Chassis™ is the base of every Facit Home. It is custom manufactured for each of our projects using digital tools and technology, ensuring that any bespoke design can be CNC cut from plywood even if it requires a number of complex structures. Digital manufacturing meant the team could ensure there was less waste and more efficiency in the production of the materials and the progress of the timber construction. The design and construction of this project resulted in a unique home that

responds to the landscape surrounding it and will age beautifully. The customers benefited from a choice of materials and designs that the manufacturing process could accommodate to create an exceptional home. The views over the water are outstanding, so the design naturally incorporated large, custom manufactured, triple-glazed windows that combine outstanding performance with contemporary style and allow natural light and incredible views from every room in the home.

KINGSTEIGNTON PRIMARY SCHOOL WINNER SIPS PROJECT OF THE YEAR: INNOVARÉ SYSTEMS

Delivered under the Priority Schools Building Programme, Kingsteignton Primary School combines the architectural expertise of Scott Brownrigg with Galliford Try’s awardwinning Optimum Schools principles and Innovaré’s acclaimed structural timber technology. The development seamlessly interconnects education zones delivering adaptable spaces which promote teaching and learning. The design champions the use of Innovaré’s award-winning i-SIPS – a BBA Approved Structural Insulated Panel System. The only one of its kind manufactured in the UK, i-SIPS can measure up to 6x3 metres – few build methods can match the speed and performance levels achieved with these large format panels. The structure was completed in just 14 weeks and the enhanced performance

benefits will reduce ongoing maintenance and energy costs for the lifetime of the building. The Innovaré team managed the structural design, manufacture and installation to meet performance specifications defined in the Optimum Schools protocols. The project was delivered 50% faster than other proposed build methods. From concept to completion – the development achieved both cost and programme certainty, ensuring the new £5m stateof-the-art school opened on time and within budget. Dr Penny Fitch, Principal Kingsteignton Primary School: ‘The building proceeded at a pace which can only be described as amazing. We do not feel that there are any areas that could be improved on in terms of

communication, quality and speed of the programme. Delivery of this new facility is a key element in the area’s continued expansion. More than 12,000 new homes are planned for Teignbridge in the coming years with hundreds of those being built right now next to our site at Newcross. People rightly call for the infrastructure to serve our growing communities and this is an excellent example of that happening.”

G-FRAME STRUCTURES, FLETCHER CRANE ARCHITECTS & BINDERHOLZ Water Gardens Pod is a three-bedroom luxury dwelling for the rental market that nestles beneath a seventeen storey tower block, built on a concrete plinth which forms the roof of an existing office building below. The scheme clearly demonstrates the way in which building with CLT can meet very complex design and site requirements, whilst blending into an architecturally important and historically sensitive setting. Water Gardens Pod has brought to life a small and forgotten about brown field site that, on first sight, offered limited options to build a new three bedroom

44

home. Fundamentally, the project addresses the issues of high density living in an ingenious and creative way, with the efficient re-use of existing structure. In terms of land use, the scheme is all about re-use and adaption which are two of the key issues of our time for inner city living. CLT’s relatively light weight, innate environmental qualities and speed & ease of construction were key considerations to deliver the project. Aesthetically, CLT has contributed greatly to achieving a pared down elegant aesthetic which was the design intent from the outset.

SELF BUILD HOUSING SPONSOR

G-FRAME STRUCTURES, KSKA ARCHITECTS & STORA ENSO

The unique CLT folded plate Origami structure provides a one bedroom family annexe in the rear garden of a listed house situated in a West London Conservation Area.

Origami House replaces a dilapidated brick-built home office that had little architectural merit except for its unusual polygon shaped footprint, which presented geometric opportunities to re-sculpt the space. In considering the most elegant way to create the roof, while overcoming height constraints of the conservation area, a folded plate roof solution flowed naturally from the existing polygon shape. The use of CLT achieved this and enabled the creation of a spacious, open plan interior uninterrupted by beams which would have been necessary with more traditional methods of construction.

The new building, which has been designed to meet Passivhaus standards, is formed of two simple rectangular volumes for the bedroom and dining spaces, arranged to produce a triangular bathroom and polygon shaped open-plan living space. The homeowners were inspired by the aesthetic of CLT and internally it has been left exposed throughout. The kitchenette features hand-crafted plywood units and built in storage has been created for the bedroom and entrance from 20mm CLT panels.

HARRIS ACADEMY SUTTON HIGHLY COMMENDED EDUCATION PROJECT OF THE YEAR: ARCHITYPE The state-of-the-art facility combines the cutting-edge scientific endeavours of the London Cancer Hub site, with a holistic and natural approach to design, showcasing the best in environmental materials and highlighting the many aesthetic and practical uses for timber in architecture.

setting, enhanced by the surrounding materiality. In the face of a climate crisis, we have no option but to reconsider tired and inefficient material and construction choices. Timber provides a beautiful and natural solution for the built environment, and Harris Academy Sutton sets a gold standard for future developments, with large scale systems that are easily replicable by anyone committed to a future of excellent and sustainable education design. Architype welcomes Harris Academy Sutton as a blueprint for future schools, colleges and universities.

STRUCTURAL TIMBER AWARDS 2020

IKEA GREENWICH HIGHLY COMMENDED RETAIL & LEISURE PROJECT OF THE YEAR:

CONSTRUCTIONAL TIMBER & MCLAUGHLIN & HARVEY CONSTRUCTION The front entrance is unlike any other IKEA seen before, the new Siberian Larch brise soleil façade looks great and assists in welcoming in the customer. This was created using prefabricated cassettes which drastically saved on the installation time. This was supported by 16m long Siberian Larch inclined columns making the building stand out from any others of its kind. From the first concept design it was clear that IKEA wanted to do something unique with this build, while maintaining its iconic and recognisable branding.

To partner this, the Siberian Larch rooflights help in providing some well needed natural light to the building. This has opened up the inside space and has helped in keeping artificial

lighting costs down. The frames were all finger jointed and prefabricated before installation which helped to keep both time and construction costs down. The Learning space pavilion that was constructed on the roof of the building was made using a Siberian larch Glulam frame complimented by spruce CLT roof and wall panels throughout. The purpose of this building was to create a community space and viewing area for customers providing them with amazing views looking over Canary Wharf and South London.

FIRE RATED PENETRATION PRODUCTS HIGHLY COMMENDED PRODUCT INNOVATION AWARD: TENMAT As early as 2000, fire brigades were reporting early ceiling and floor collapses without warning and upon investigation it was found that these applied to new light weight joist supported ceilings which had been penetrated for the passage of services.

Building Regulations Approved Document B is very clear that fire protection products need to be fire tested in the same constructions as they are being used in practice.

48

With a rise in these types of incidents, Tenmat started the development of a range of products which would be fully tested on the most onerous of light weight joist constructions and this single product range would cover all of the common type and sizes of ceiling penetration.

PRODUCT SPONSOR

The new range includes fire rated downlight covers for various sizes of downlight penetrations, ceiling fan fire sleeves for all common sizes and types of ceiling fans and fire rated air valves in all sizes. The new product range would be fully tested with multiple joist type to the most onerous test standards and highest ceiling loadings. The primary test evidence would all include a substantial amount of test “over run” and we would test with a highest level of ceiling penetration area. These were the targets all designed to make the safest possible product and all were achieved - the full product range with full testing was launched in mid-2019.
