Penelope Ward Kyle became Radford University’s sixth, and first female, president when she took office on June 1, 2005. She came to RU with more than 30 years of experience in state government, the corporate and legal worlds, and higher education. Upon assuming the presidency, President Kyle immediately focused on leading the university’s initiative to become one of the top 50 masters universities in the nation. The Radford University strategic plan “7-17”, completed in 2007 at her direction, identifies four strategic directives -- the investment in people, programs, global and local society and the future of Radford University. Under President Kyle’s leadership, the university also added its first doctoral program with an emphasis in rural mental health and launched an initiative to grow graduate college student enrollment by offering additional doctoral and masters level programs. She hired the university’s first provost and created two new vice presidential areas of responsibility, Information Technology and University Relations. The Radford University Board of Visitors, at President Kyle’s request, has increased its membership by four positions to provide an opportunity for more diversity and leadership innovation within the governing body. A native of southwest Virginia, President Kyle is a product of the Galax public schools system. She graduated from Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina and did her postgraduate studies in English at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. She received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law and later earned her MBA from the College of William and Mary. President Kyle served as Executive Director of the Virginia Lottery for 11 years, under three successive governors. First appointed by Governor George Allen in 1994, she was reappointed by Governor James Gilmore, and then reappointed once again by Governor Mark Warner. Previously, Ms. Kyle was employed by CSX Corporation, an international transportation company, where she became the company’s first female officer. Before joining CSX Corporation, she was an attorney with McGuire, Woods, LLP in Richmond. She also taught English for six years at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia. President Kyle serves in leadership positions on numerous educational, civic, cultural, professional, financial and volunteer organizations. She served on the Board of Visitors at James Madison University from 1984 until 1992 and on the JMU Foundation Board 1992 until 1994. She also served on the Virginia Commonwealth University Foundation Board from 1994 until 2000 and on the Board of Governors of Saint Christopher’s School

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted fullfledged NCAA Division I status. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander
replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique tV packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly
every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an atlarge playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The league has had more than 95 academic allAmericans in its quarter-century of existence.

BRENT CHUMBLEY TRACK & FIELD/CROSS COUNTRY DIRECTOR 3rd SEASON AT RADFORD/4th OVERALL Brent Chumbley is in his third season as head coach of Radford’s track & field and cross country teams. At the conclusion of Radford’s track and field season in 2007, Chumbley had the “interim“ tag lifted from his title when he became the school’s director of track and field /cross country on June 23. During Chumbley’s tenure as head coach, Radford has produced 71 all-conference performers, 19 Big South Champions, 15 regional qualifiers, 18 school records, a regional champion and an All-American. The 2009 season was no different for Chumbley, as the Highlanders carried over their success from the previous year by placing fourth and sixth in the outdoor championship and sixth and seventh in the indoor championships. Chumbley’s throwers fared well in the 2009 season as they placed in the top-five at both the indoor and outdoor championships. Freshman Aimee Veatch recorded first place finishes in the weight throw at the indoor championships and reached the podium stand twice at the outdoor championships. Chumbley also had in hands helping Lindsey Noe become the school record-holder in the pole vault. On the men’s side, he has helped with the continued improvement of Matt Dobson and nurtured the talents of freshman Justin Smith. Each of these two individuals placed at the conference championship. Dobson and Smith in the weight throw and Smith in the hammer and discus. Chumbley’s tutelage helped six athletes make it to the next level and qualify for the NCAA Regionals and national championships. Shemelia Brandon, Aimee Veatch and Brittany Whittaker on the women’s side and Raschad Kelso, Olajuwon Jones and the 4x400 team on the men’s side. Kyle Morse reached the next level of competition under Chumbley, as he competed in the USATF National Championships. Brett Olinger and Justin Smith also reached the next level of competition as well as they competed in the USATF Junior Championships. Chumbley’s knowledge and experience of the sport saw instant results in the 2008 season. The men’s team posted their best-ever finish, placing second at the Indoor championships. Individually the men’s and women’s teams produced seven all-conference performers. The 2008 outdoor season saw individual Big South success and a number of Chumbley’s athletes advanced to the NCAA Regional meet. Two womenAmy Marshall and Shemelia Brandon and seven men-Kyle Morse, Nictae Moore, Daniel Oseth, Raschad Kelso, Olajuwon Jones, Wayne Gore and Gaylon Johnson-all competed in the East Regional. Morse, an athlete under Chumbley’s teaching since his sophomore year, claimed the East Regional title in the hammer throw and advanced to the NCAA Championships, where he became Radford’s fifth All-American, and the first with Chumbley at the helm. In 2007, Chumbley was called on to fill a new role, moving into the position of interim Program Director. On the men’s side , Chumbley helped with the continued development of James Nixon, Radford most prolific shot put athlete, and the grooming of Morse, an eventual All-American. On the women’s side, he helped develop the top two throwers in program’s history: Tiffany Evans and Marshall. Under Chumbley’s watchful eye, Evans racked up four conference championships and earned Big South Field Performer of the Year honors in both the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2007. Marshall went on to post a pair of javelin titles of her own (2007-08), and entered her name into the school record books. In 2006, Chumbley was hired as the throws coach and in his first season there were instant results. Four throwers made their mark among the very best in the Big South and the program’s record book. Before landing in Radford, Chumbley’s background include four different stops.
He spent the four years prior to his arrival at Radford as an assistant at Illinois State. In his time with the Redbirds, Chumbley produced one United States Olympic Trials qualifier, two NCAA Championship qualifiers, 17 NCAA Regional qualifiers, eight conference champions and 23 all-conference performances. In addition, Chumbley helped guide his squad in setting four new school records and one conference record. Prior to Illinois State, Chumbley spent one year at Murray State, where he helped produce one conference champion, 17 all-conference performances and guided his group in setting four school records. Chumbley earned his Master’s in teaching (physical education) from Hastings College (Ky.), where he coached the NAIA affiliate school in producing two All-Americans, 12 national qualifiers, one multi event national champion and 17 new school records. Beyond his collegiate coaching resume, Chumbley brings experience from the King of the Ring Throws Festival, the Redbird Track and Field Camp, the Urbana Coaches Clinic, Central Illinois Track Club and the Chumbley/Fister Throws Camp. Chumbley’s impact also carries over to post-collegiate athletes, including Radford’s only two-time All-American, Brian Richotte, as Chumbley coached him to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials in the hammer throw. He also coached Brain Krantz at the 2008 Indoor Championships. His track and field training includes certification as a USATF Level II Throws coach, and from USATF Level I coaching school. In 1998, Chumbley earned his Bachelor’s degree in education and kinesiology from the University of Kentucky and in 2001 got his masters in teaching from Hastings College. An All-Southern Conference performer in the hammer throw while at Marshall University, Chumbley was also a three-time Kentucky High School State Champion. MARK WHITE
WILLIE JOHNSON
ASSISTANT COACH 3RD SEASON Mark White is in his third season at Radford University. White handles the sprinters and hurdles as well as the responsibilities of recruiting coordinator. He is USA Track & Field Level Two certified in combined events. In his first two years as an assistant coach every sprint, hurdle and relay record, both indoors and outdoors, has been broken except for one. The 2009 indoor season saw new school records being shattered by sprinters in every meet. There were new school records set in the 60m, 60m hurdles, 200m, and 400m. The outdoor season wasn’t any different as school records fell in the open 400m and the 4x400 relay record was tied. Under White’s watch, three of his sprinters advanced to the NCAA Regional and one qualified for the Nationals. Raschad Kelso in the 200m and Olajuwon Jones in the 400m. TRACK & FIELD: RELOADING
The Highlanders come into the start of the season with high expectations as they look to improve on last year’s indoor and outdoor championship finishes. The men placed sixth in the Big South Indoor Championship while the women finished seventh. At the outdoor championship, the men placed fourth while the women finished in sixth. Sprinters/Middle Distance The sprinters should help the Radford team move up the Big South ladder with a core group returning. Assistant coach Mark White has three regional qualifiers and one USATF Junior National qualifiers all returning. Raschad Kelso, Olajuwon Jones, Britney Whittaker and Brett Olinger will pace the sprinters. Kelso is a regional qualifier in the 200m and 4x400 relay. Kelso also holds the indoor school records for the 60m, 200m, 400m and is part of the 4x400 relay team that has the record. His outdoor accolades are just as good with school records in the 200m, 4x100 relay and 4x400. Jones was a regional qualifier in the 400m and he is the outdoor school record-holder in the 400m. Britney Whittaker, the 800m Big South Champion, and Brett Olinger, a USATF Junior National Qualifier in the 400m hurdles look to help the Highlanders reach new heights this season. Radford has conference scorers returning and will look to freshmen to come in and make a difference as well. Freshmen Austin Cuffee, Kayla Christian, Anthony Carlie and Drew Hall will be given the chance to help contribute in getting the Highlanders to their ultimate goal of winning a conference championship. White is hoping that these freshman will make an immediate impact to the program. Throwers Throwing a hammer or tossing a javelin requires skill, technique and strength, and those are all attributes that these returning throwers have. Head Coach Brent Chumbley was a decorated thrower himself during his collegiate career, and what he instills in his group will help the Highlanders gain valuable points come conference championship time. Coach Chumbley return’s the one of the best throwers in Radford history, Kyle Morse, an All-American in 2008 and a regional champion in the hammer throw. He holds the school record in the discus as well. Morse isn’t the only Highlander to reach the postseason. Sophomore Justin Smith qualified for the USATF Junior Nationals in the shot put over the summer. Senior Matt Dobson will also contribute in the throwing events as well and will look to gain valuable points for the Highlanders come conference championship time. On the women’s side, sophomore Aimee Veatch will continue to make her mark on the Big South Conference. Last year, Veatch won the hammer throw and placed third in the discus. She also won the indoor weight throw and was an All-Region peformer. She placed sixth in the NCAA East Regional in the hammer throw and was named Big South Freshman of the Year. Veatch’s off-season workouts and work ethic could help at the conference championship. Besides the core group of throwers who will contribute Chumbley has his eyes on one incoming freshman that will look to contribute right away, Kim Johnson. Johnson, a state champion shot putter from Bristol, held the second best high school mark in the state of Virginia in all divisions a year ago. Chumbley expects her to challenge Veatch for shot put honors come conference championship time. Jumpers Jumps coach Willie Johnson lost a big part of the women’s scoring in the jumps when Shemelia Brandon graduated, but reloaded with three freshmen who are going to score points right away for the Highlanders. Kayla Christian, a product of New Kent High School, not only can sprint but she can jump as well. She is a raw talent with untapped po-
16
tential that Johnson can mold into a jumper with a bright future at Radford University. Another raw talent that Jonhson can mold is Elaine Derricott, a Richmond native, who had the sixth-best long jump in the commonwealth last year. Fellow Richmond product Jasia Richardson has untapped potential and tremendous athletic ability. Richardson won the AAA Indoor State Championship in the triple jump in 2008, as well as being the ninth ranked triple jumper in the nation. On the men’s side, Johnson will get the use of versatile freshman Anthony Carlie for the long jump. Carlie was a Central District long jump champion in 2008 along with a national ranking of 24th and fifth in the state of Virginia. Johnson will expect him to make an immediate impact and contend for the conference crown in the long jump. Experience often helps younger teammates develop into great athletes and that’s what Tony Brown Jr. and Bryan Wallace give. Brown placed fifth in the indoor championships and fourth at the outdoor championships in the high jump for Coach Johnson, while Bryan Wallace captured third place in the long jump at the outdoor conference championship. Both Brown and Wallace recorded season-best marks in the high jump, triple jump and long jump during last season. Multi Events The pentathlon, heptathlon, decathlon are difficult events that test your mental, physical and emotional abilities. A two-day competition, the pentathlon, heptathlon and decathlon encompasses every aspect of track & field and is a true test of one’s training. Radford’s Kevin Richards, a junior, will hold the banner for Radford University track & field team in the decathlon and heptathlon events. He placed fourth in the heptathlon at last year’s Liberty Kickoff meet and multi events coach White is looking for him to get everything started come the conference championship. On the women’s side, Derricott and Lindsey Noe will carry the torch for the Highlanders in the pentathlon. Noe , a junior from Goldvein, Va., is the school record-holder in the pole vault. Distance With the graduation of Dawitt Legesse and Joel Hanlon, the distance team will be without their top men’s performers from the 2008-09 season, but distance coach Ann McGranahan has a group of young talent that will mix well with the upperclassmen to form a formidable men’s distance squad. Senior Liam Arocho, sophomores Nathan Turner and Eric Adams return from last year’s distance team and will look to score in the 1,500m, 3,000m, 5,000m and 10,000m in conference action. They will get some help from freshman Sam Keltner and Jared Scripture, two individuals that Coach McGranahan expects to make an early impact. On the women’s side, McGranahan returns her best distance runner and school record-holder in the 5,000m indoors, Lori Crotts. Seniors Brittany Christian and Tara Connor will look to add depth to the distance team and provide leadership for the Highlanders as well. McGranahan will add to the already deep women’s team with the addition of freshmen Hannah Scheren and Maggie Wissler to the women’s squad.
