Penelope Ward Kyle became Radford University’s sixth, and first female, president when she took office on June 1, 2005. She came to RU with more than 30 years of experience in state government, the corporate and legal worlds, and higher education. Upon assuming the presidency, President Kyle immediately focused on leading the university’s initiative to become one of the top 50 masters universities in the nation. The Radford University strategic plan “7-17”, completed in 2007 at her direction, identifies four strategic directives -- the investment in people, programs, global and local society and the future of Radford University. Under President Kyle’s leadership, the university also added its first doctoral program with an emphasis in rural mental health and launched an initiative to grow graduate college student enrollment by offering additional doctoral and masters level programs. She hired the university’s first provost and created two new vice presidential areas of responsibility, Information Technology and University Relations. The Radford University Board of Visitors, at President Kyle’s request, has increased its membership by four positions to provide an opportunity for more diversity and leadership innovation within the governing body. A native of southwest Virginia, President Kyle is a product of the Galax public schools system. She graduated from Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina and did her postgraduate studies in English at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. She received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law and later earned her MBA from the College of William and Mary. President Kyle served as Executive Director of the Virginia Lottery for 11 years, under three successive governors. First appointed by Governor George Allen in 1994, she was reappointed by Governor James Gilmore, and then reappointed once again by Governor Mark Warner. Previously, Ms. Kyle was employed by CSX Corporation, an international transportation company, where she became the company’s first female officer. Before joining CSX Corporation, she was an attorney with McGuire, Woods, LLP in Richmond. She also taught English for six years at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia. President Kyle serves in leadership positions on numerous educational, civic, cultural, professional, financial and volunteer organizations. She served on the Board of Visitors at James Madison University from 1984 until 1992 and on the JMU Foundation Board 1992 until 1994. She also served on the Virginia Commonwealth University Foundation Board from 1994 until 2000 and on the Board of Governors of Saint Christopher’s School

from 1999 until 2005. President Kyle is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Board of Directors of PRA, Inc., a publicly traded company. Ms. Kyle is married to Charles L. Menges, an attorney and partner with McGuire, Woods, LLC. They are the parents of a son, Kyle Ward Menges, and two daughters, Penelope Whitley Menges, and Patricia Lee Menges.

Since being introduced as Radford University’s Director of Athletics in the fall of 2007, Radford native Robert Lineburg has helped usher in a new era of Highlander athletics, marked by unprecedented on-and off-field improvements and successes. In his short time with the department, Lineburg has been the catalyst for a number of changes, particularly in areas such as facilities, personnel and strategic planning. His most visible influence to date has been on the Dedmon ROBERT LINEBURG Center, where Lineburg has been DIRECTOR OF involved with major renovations ATHLETICS to the centerpiece of Radford athletics for more than 25 years. Beginning in the spring of 2008, the facility underwent transformations to the arena, including a new steel-supported roof, a new basketball floor, renovated athletic offices, a new-look natatorium, and improved athletic locker, training, and medical facilities. Lineburg has also overseen the hires of four new head coaches, as well as five new athletic administrators. His hires include women’s basketball head coach Taj Njongba, head volleyball coach Marci Jenkins, women’s head golf coach Jeff Beeler, and the promotion of track and field interim director Brent Chumbley to head coaches’ status. Among the administrators added in Lineburg’s tenure are executive associate A.D. Randy Butt, head athletic trainer David Jager, assistant A.D. for communications Joey Beeler, director of studentathlete support services/SWA Stephanie Ballein, and associate A.D. for external operations Greg Herring. As a result of the changes, Radford achieved a banner year in 2008-09: women’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s tennis and softball claimed Big South conference crowns and advanced to NCAA Tournament play. Women’s soccer advanced to its fourth tournament, men’s basketball won the Big South regular-season and tournament to advance to the NCAAs for the first time since 1998, men’s tennis made its third-straight appearance, and softball appeared for the first time and won Radford’s first NCAA tournament game in any sport. Lineburg’s coaching resume also includes assistant coaching positions with the men’s basketball programs at James Madison University and Emory & Henry College, as well as with the Dallas Mavericks summer league team. His coaching experience also took him through the Big South, as he spent time on the sideline at UNC Greensboro. A 1991 graduate of Roanoke College, Lineburg started his collegiate basketball career as a Radford Highlander, where he was a two-year letterman before transferring to nearby Roanoke College to play his final two years. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in political science with a minor in history. In 1995, he received a Master’s Degree in education from Virginia Tech, where he was also a graduate assistant on the men’s basketball staff. Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted fullfledged NCAA Division I status. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander

replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique tV packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly

every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an atlarge playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The league has had more than 95 academic allAmericans in its quarter-century of existence.

2008 BIG SOUTH ALLFRESHMAN TEAM

NEW IS EXPECTED IN JENKINS’ SECOND YEAR For Radford head volleyball coach Marci Jenkins, it will be a learning process all season. Jenkins, who is in her second year at the helm of the Highlanders, is trying not only to mold a roster that has eight new players, but she and her team begin their first season back inside the Dedmon Center, a facility that neither these rookies nor Jenkins have competed in. “It feels a lot more like home this year,” Jenkins says, comparing the experience to the Highlanders stint in Peters Hall last season. “The kids didn’t have a locker room last year, they had to spend their time going back and forth to Peters. It definitely is a good thing to have everything you need in one place.” For Jenkins, even being able to walk 200 feet from her office to the court is an advantage. “It makes my life a lot easier,” she says. The Highlanders also have two courts at their disposal in the spacious Dedmon Center, something they’ll need for a roster of 16 players and to break in a group of eight newcomers, including seven true freshmen. What this group will bring to the table is still largely uncertain at the Division I level, but the Jenkins-inspired sea change of Radford volleyball has been an effort to bring in a wellrounded, competitive group. “I was looking for a competitive team,” says Jenkins. “I wanted to find a group that had a competitive drive more than anything else. Every year, you’re looking to improve, and we’re trying to make headway with this group.” The 2009 version of the Highlanders have 16 possibilities for six spots on the court at any given time. And Jenkins says those six spots are wide open to anyone. “We have competition at each position this year,” Jenkins says. “That’s the most exciting thing about this year and it will be interesting to

see how everyone responds.” And the much-talked about young group of Highlanders should figure in to the mix. “Talent-wise, we’ve made some strides, but it’s still going to be a different ballgame for the kids who played at high-level high school or club program,” Jenkins says. “Our success will depend on how they make the adjustment.” One of the adjustments these individuals will be making is playing far away from their hometowns. Of the eight newcomers, only two are from Virginia (Bailey Banks – Fairfax; Jamie Bartz – Virginia Beach) and some are from as far away as Nevada (Nicole Keller – Carson City). For the group as whole, playing at a high level will be the ultimate adjustment. All signs, however, point to a successful group at the high school and club levels that knows how to compete and win. Setter Desiree Aramburu helped her high school team to a No. 17 ranking, nationally. Outside hitter Emily Hayes was part of a 21-12 high school team and third-place club finish at JVDA Nationals. Middle blocker Mariah Nussbaum led her club team to a second place showing at AAU Nationals. Despite the promise of the newcomers, Jenkins recognizes that there’s no substitution for experience in Division I. “You can never underestimate the value of an upperclassman,” says Jenkins. “The experience level is so important to have, especially at this level.” Among returning players, sophomore outside hitter Megan McWhorter stood out last season with a pair of Big South Freshman of the Week nods. Sophomore Katelyn Meeks, who moved to the libero position late last season, responded with a Big South Libero of the Week honor in November.

In addition to having a permanent place to call home and grow as a program, Jenkins and the Highlanders will have the opportunity to make strides in game action at the Dedmon Center. The home schedule opens with the Radford University Tournament Sept. 4-5, and includes two non-conference matches (Sept. 8 – JMU, Oct. 13 – N.C. Central). This year’s home slate also includes the 2009 Big South Tournament, Nov. 19-21. “That was tough last season, being on the road as much as we were,” Jenkins said. “It will be good for the kids to get used to playing on their home court.” Having a home court advantage could grow on this team in a hurry. Not only does the Dedmon Center have expanded practice space and locker rooms, but it’s also home to the recently-upgraded weight room and Academic Performance Center, putting everything the Highlanders need under one roof. In addition, the Highlanders’ haunt includes a wooden surface, unlike the synthetic court from previous years. Additional plans for the future call for an upgrade of the surface as well, which was the former basketball floor of the Dedmon Center. “Next year, we’ll have the floor re-finished, and done the way we want it,” Jenkins says. “It’s important to make it the way we want it, and make it unique to our program.” While improvements off the court are still on the way, Jenkins and the Highlanders have plenty of new things on their plates and much to adapt to in 2009, a challenge she welcomes. “I’m excited for what we could do,” Jenkins says. “It’s exciting to be in Dedmon, and to coach a blend of newer and experienced players. We’ll see where it goes from here.”

MARCI JENKINS HEAD COACH 2nd SEASON AT RADFORD/4th OVERALL Radford University named Marci Jenkins to the position of Head Women’s Volleyball Coach in February of 2008. Jenkins’ debut season on the Highlander bench started in impressive fashion as her club won the 2008 “Battle at the Beach” Championship, hosted by UNC Wilmington. Highlighting Radford’s 3-0 start to Jenkins’ first season at the helm was Laura Waddell earning Tournament MVP, and Megan McWhorter and Kiley Kent grabbing spots on the all-tournament squad. No stranger to rebuilding programs, Jenkins led Radford to its highest overall and conference wins total in seven years last season. To go along with the strong foundation that Jenkins has assembled to return Radford to the success it experienced almost 10 years ago, two of her student-athletes earned Big South weekly honors in 2008, while Megan McWhorter was named to the league’s all-freshman squad and Melinda Clelland earned all-academic recognition for the third straight year. Off the court, Jenkins’ 2008 squad exemplified the true meaning of “student-athlete,” compiling a team GPA that ranked tops among Radford’s 19 athletic programs. Jenkins’ drive towards success is also evident through her work on the recruiting trail as this year’s incoming group features a very talented and deep class, which should pave the way for a very bright future. Prior to becoming the 10th head coach in Highlander volleyball history, Jenkins came to Radford with a 30-26 overall record as a college coach after turning around the Chowan program. She also has a 121-49 mark in 10 years at the high school level. In her two years at Chowan, Jenkins oversaw a rapid turnaround taking a team that posted a 4-17 record her first season to a 26-11 mark in 2007. The Hawks led Division II in aces per game in 2007 under Jenkins. Jenkins took over at Chowan after two successful years at Mills Godwin High School in Richmond, Va. Jenkins’ first team at Godwin posted a 26-3 record, claiming a district title and a district tournament championship. The Eagles won the Regional Championship and finished third in the Virginia High School League State Playoffs. The following year, Jenkins guided her team to another winning record and a fourth place regional finish. Her first coaching job came at Hermitage High School, where she served as the head coach for eight years. She never had a losing season at Hermitage, posting an 84-36 overall record. For three straight years, Jenkins’ teams were ranked fifth or better in the region. Jenkins’ leadership and coaching skills were recognized by the VHSL in 2003 and 2005 when she was selected as the Head Coach of the Girl’s Volleyball East team. In addition to her extensive coaching experience on the high school and college level, Jenkins has spent a significant amount of time as a club level coach. Her 2003-04 team qualified for the Junior Olympics in Houston, Texas, posting a 54-21 record. She led her 2004-05 team into a 23rd-place finish in the Junior Olympics, held in Salt Lake City, with a 58-17 overall record. Jenkins has also extended her experience at numerous college and high school camps and her involvement led to invitations to prestigious coaching clinics. This includes the USA Volleyball Coaches Clinic at the Colorado Springs, Colo. Olympic Training Center.

CHRISTINA DIAZ ASSISTANT COACH 1st SEASON AT RADFORD Former Florida standout Christina Diaz is in her first season as an assistant coach with the Radford University volleyball program. Diaz will assist in all aspects of the program under Jenkins, including recruiting. A four-year letterwinner and defensive specialist for the Gators, Diaz captained Florida as a senior in 2008 and helped her team to an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance and its 18th straight SEC title. The Hollywood, Fla. native was a four-time SEC Academic Honor Roll performer and the recipient of the team’s Gator Spirit Award last season. “I am very excited about Christina joining my staff here at Radford University,” Jenkins said. “She is coming from one of the most successful SEC programs where she competed as a libero and the invaluable knowledge she gained under head coach Mary Wise will be a huge asset for our squad.” Diaz prepped for a collegiate coaching career with an internship in the Florida volleyball office under 18th-year head coach Wise, the winningest coach in SEC history, assisting in all aspects of the program following the completion of her eligibility. “Christina was one of those players whose coaching potential was seen early on in her career,” Wise said. “She was a player who went from being a walk-on her freshman year to being a co-captain her senior year. Radford is getting not only a great talent, but also a great individual.” She completed her degree in health education in May.

JANELLE DOBBINS 1995 INDUCTEE A 1955 Radford graduate, Dobbins is a popular and familiar figure in Highlander athletics. She served 19 years as Radford’s volleyball coach before retiring in 1993 as the school’s winningest coach in any sport. Her teams were 369-219, growing from an unaffiliated small college team in 1971 to an NCAA Division I Tournament participant her final season. A Radford native, she built RU volleyball into an NCAADivision II power in the early 1980s, “retired” for three seasons, and then returned to coach the team to two Big South titles in the 1990s.

ANDI LAWLER 2001 INDUCTEE Radford’s first scholarship athlete in volleyball, Lawler helped take the program to a higher level during her four-year career. The leading hitter on state championship teams in 1980 and 1981, she led Radford to 28-8 and 30-6 records those seasons and to berths in the AIAW Regionals. She was co-captain and the leading passer on Radford’s first NCAA Division II team in 1983, as the squad posted another strong 24-9 record and earned another trip to the regionals. Overall during her career, the RU was 98-37 (.726), in moving from the small college ranks to Division II. She earned all-state honors in 1981 and 1982, and was also all-region in 1982. Lawler graduated in 1983 with a degree in Liberal Studies. ANNE FONTAINE 2002 INDUCTEE Fontaine holds a distinction few collegiate athletes can claim. She played in two different NCAA championship tournaments the same year, leading the 1993 volleyball team to a berth, and playing a key role on the basketball team’s 1993-94 tournament team, too. When she left RU, Fontaine was the career leader in digs and service aces and number two in kills. She was All-Big South from 1991-93, earning All-Tournament honors in 1990, 1991 and 1993. She was a three-time team MVP and VaSID All-State in 1992 and 1993, a four-time selection to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll and named as one of RU’s Outstanding Students in 1995. The Wytheville native was a three-time letter winner in basketball, and played on three conference title teams.
