After being surrounded by farmlands in all directions, the movement in and around the building is structured in such a way that at every turn there is something new to see. The arches allow the free movement of people across corridors from any point to any other making the space very dynamic.

Being located in a valley, in the vast expanse of land spreading in all directions, the space is rather very dynamic and allows a very free and open movement for anyone. This amount of freedom is also restricting in a way as there is no sense of security. Within the campus, the movement happens very curiously.

The location of this structure being in a densely populated city, the movement outside is crowded and uneven. Inside the building, the movement of children and faculty has been given clear distinction and gives clarity of space. Despite this, there is not much space to accommodate larger crowds.

On the selected site, the movement will largely be across the length of site going up and down the hill. The spaces and movement for visitors would not be merged with the regular movement of children and faculty.

Movement Because of the structure's design, it is quite evident that the movement in this space happens rather freely. Because of the even distribution of spaces, there is a clear distinction between active and inactive spaces and also has is enough space for all kinds of activity

The use of huge arches in windows lets a lot more light flow into the building and adds an interesting character. The structure being semi open also invites a lot of wind inside.

The irregular arches in the corridor invite a lot of light and breeze flowing in and out of the building constantly leaving the structure with very less use of electricity.

Because of the location, the campus is always flooded with immense light and breeze from all directions and the structures do not constrict them.

Being located in the middle of a city, the flow of good air and light is fairly less, but nevertheless, the sunroof on the topmost floor allows a lot of natural light to flow into the structure, not so much into the classrooms.

As the structure is located along the contours of the hill, the classrooms and other spaces are places in such a way that every morning, light flushes into them.

SHOLAI SCHOOL

Sholai school campus is spread over 35 acres amongst a coffee estate having fruit trees and pepper vines and is bisected by a brook. It is set within the 100 acre grounds of the centre for learning, organic agriculture and appropriate technology (cloaat) which is entirely self-sufficient in energy and practices, as much as possible, living sustain-ably and in harmony with its natural environment. The climate at 3,800 feet altitude is pleasant and cool all year round. Just 3 kms away from the campus is virgin rain forest, where there are common sightings of Elephant, Gaur and other wild animals. Sholai school is the brainchild of Brian Jenkins, a British social anthropologist. He located the scenic 100 acre area near Kodaikanal, where he began his school from a small building and a kitchen. Today it is a far bigger complex, housing classroom blocks, separate hostels for boys and girls, a dining area, a library, vast open spaces for farming, and the school's very own dairy. Water from the hilly streams, wells and from rain water harvesting meets the requirements of the school, without having to depend on the municipal supply. And if this wasn't enough, the school uses renewable energy too. Power is generated through photo-voltaic panels and a micro-hydroelectric turbine, independent of the town grid electricity. There are solar panels in the entire school and four bio-gas plants to fuel the kitchen.

The school follows the oxford university and has a kind of curriculum structured where more importance in given to the individual growth of the child and their experience than how much they score. The incomplete city Shuffling through the tiny lanes of a city, what is it that your mind holds on to ? Just like you, a few thousand years ago one human being realized that he wants to multiply and repeat himself in every form possible. Today we live in a complicated amalgamation of emotions and concrete. Year after year we called this our home and kept trying to accommodate everyone that turned up with all kinds of baggage. Always aiming to bring a better future but always letting the present stay incomplete. If you were to ask yourself what was missing from the city you lived in, you'll always have an answer. This ever expanding need for more is what we call a city. In the desperation to put a roof over everyone's head, we fail to leave space for the sky. In an attempt to make everything one, we make a million. Everyone who walks through the walls of the city, adds a brick or removes one. Everyone that tangles themselves into the web of human society, ties or cuts a string.

But teacher, what is god ? / But teacher, why is the sky blue ? For a school, children must run. Run through the walls, The stairs, the trees and chairs. Watch out ! He's right behind you ! For a school, it must be open. For open space grows into an open mind. To be able to grow and to witness life grow around you and see leaves dance among trees just before a monsoon breeze. I will never be able to catch him, he'll keep running in between the never ending corridors like a mouse. The grass is calling me and I must go. Race you to the lunch room ! Watch me grab a plate and run back to the centre. The sunlight descends through the hole in the sky and lights up my face. We eat while watching the vast expanse of land spreading across like an ocean. At noon, we sit under a tree trying to color an elephant while flowers of red and pink rain upon us. I look up to see the tree swaying, almost dancing to tunes I cannot hear. I wonder what flying must feel like. God is the guy who fills up paint in your empty paint box / the sky is blue because it's a river hanging upside down.

If you were someone who was born and raised in a forest, and one day decided to visit a jungle that was Grey in color, what is it that would hold your gaze ? The overhead metro lines ? The sweet corn on the roadside ? The old man walking with a stick ? Or the cow in the middle of the road ?

My bones are beginning to glide over one another with a lot more ease now. Most of the nights before I fall asleep I used to raise my hand from the elbow and watch my joints and muscles move as and how I wanted them to. In different lighting it would look different. When I slowly began to meet people, I came to realize that others do it too. Now when my body rests against the pretentious cold floor every night, I can feel a lot more bones than I could before. My fingers also, involuntarily, keep moving around the places where I can feel my heart beat the most. There's a pulsating energy in every other fold and bend and my fingers can't seem to ignore it. Although my weather app still says the air quality is unhealthy to breathe, I could spot a constellation in the sky the other night. I knew just one, and now I know two. 40 Something nights have rolled in and out, amma has revealed a lot more family drama, and I made a whole wheat cake which at first, wasn't all that bad but it can definitely be better. I used to want to pick out every weed that grew in all the plants I take care of. Amma told me things about my childhood that I didn't know I managed to completely erase from my memory. If I stress on it maybe I haven't really forgotten, but there's a nice comfortable distance. One fond memory is that I used to go about changing the time in all the clocks around the house because for one, for an embarrassingly long time I didn't know how to read time, and for two, it was an irrelevant measure then. The sun sets right at my doorstep now. It also bids goodbye to the tiny lemon plants that have grown in a small pot in my balcony. There's a song that I'm going to sing tomorrow and it's called, woh jab yaad aaye, bohot yaad aaye. 5 Kids were playing on the terrace when I went to collect the dry clothes. Another small boy and his father later joined the group, but this boy had no idea what to do. So while they were all playing a game where there were rules and ' no pushing ', this boy just ran in circles, screaming. This one girl tried to explain things to him but he wouldn't stop. He just kept running and running not caring if anyone's still playing. The girl got annoyed and made a face. The father then screamed ' he doesn't understand rules, just let him run '.

Can you hear it ? If you imagine it as if your looking from a far end of this universe, to see rain fall onto earth would be so weird. A bigger ball, is shooting needles onto a smaller ball. I think it's the only contact between this smaller ball and that bigger ball that we can physically experience. That's probably what an overthinking brain looks like too. A continuous shower of innumerable needles. When I wrote ' motherhood is not a post, it's the responsibility of this human race ' in my synopsis, I didn't mean it in a way most people would understand. I think it takes a different level of mind to understand that motherhood is a tendency in us all, and only comes out a few times. It's weird maybe, but it's true. When Ayaz told me that he, along with keeping his body clean has been beginning to feel the need to keep his surroundings clean because he extended himself from just body to a little bit more, I asked , when will it become the whole world ? When will you extend yourself so much so that you erase the line that defines you and the universe as separate entities ? Can you hear it ? I was referring to my TV saying it's not working because of kharaab mausam. I was watching a show of lightning on my terrace with a voice ringing in my ear. It was a like the wires that carry electricity from one pole of this Earth to another broke in between and there were sparks flying all over. The lines that the sky drew reminded me of my hand gripping the violently moving railings on the window of a bus. The sky smelt of dust and camphor. It was pink and white. But really though , Can you really hear it ? Because I can hear you.

At first you hesitate because this doesn't look like an environment you'd live in, but you notice attempts of life in multiple corners. Stitch works

In the beginning of 2021 when the second lock-down due to the rise in Covid-19 cases was announced, I acquired a few new skills which were stitching cloth using the sewing machine, hand done embroidery and cross stitch techniques. I used old clothing to make new items like bags and pouches, stitched a pattern with red flowers on a pillow cover and made a series of tiny stories with a main character (the orange square Suppu) repeating in all of them.
