Selfie Obssession

W

e live in the age of the selfie. A fast self-portrait, made with a smartphone’s camera and immediately distributed and inscribed into a network, is an instant visual communication of where we are, what we’re doing, who we think we are, and who we think is watching. Selfies have changed aspects of social interaction, body language, self-awareness, privacy, and humor, altering temporality, irony, and public behavior. It’s become a new visual genre—a type of self-portraiture formally distinct from all others in history. Selfies have their own structural autonomy. This is a very big deal for art. Genres arise relatively rarely. Portraiture is a genre. So is still-life, landscape, animal painting, history painting. (They overlap, too: A portrait might be in a seascape.) A genre possesses its own formal logic, with tropes and structural wisdom, and lasts a long time, until all the problems it was invented to address have been fully addressed. (Genres are distinct from styles, which come and go: There are Expressionist portraits, Cubist portraits, Impressionist portraits, Norman Rockwell portraits. Style is the endless variation within genre.) These are not like the self-portraits we are used to. Setting aside the formal dissimilarities between these two forms—of framing, of technique—traditional photographic self-portraiture is far less spontaneous and casual than a selfie is. This new genre isn’t dominated by artists. When made by amateurs, traditional photographic self-portraiture didn’t become a distinct thing, didn’t have a codified look or transform into social dialogue and conversation. These pictures were not usually disseminated to strangers and were never made in such numbers by so many people. It’s possible that the selfie is the most prevalent popular genre ever. The wide-angle lens on most cell-phone cameras exaggerates the depth of noses and chins, and the arm holding the camera often looks huge. (Over time, this distortion has become less noticeable. Recall, however, the skewed look of the early cell-phone snap.) If both your hands are in the picture and it’s not a mirror shot, technically, it’s not a selfie—it’s a portrait.

” A fast self-portrait, made with a smartphone’s camera and immediately distributed and inscribed into a network, is an instant visual commuelfies are usually casual, improvised, fast; their S primary purpose is to be seen here, now, by other nication of where we are, people, most of them unknown, in social networks. are never accidental: Whether carefully staged what we’re doing, who we They or completely casual, any selfie that you see had to be approved by the sender before being embedded think we are, and who we into a network. This implies control as well as the think is watching.” presence of performing, self-criticality, and irony. The distributor of a selfie made it to be looked at by us, right now, and when we look at it, we know that. (And the maker knows we know that.) The critic Alicia Eler notes that they’re “where we become our own biggest fans and private paparazzi,” and that they are “ways for celebrities to pretend they’re just like regular people, making themselves their own controlled PR machines.” When it is not just PR, though, it is a powerful, instantaneous ironic interaction that has intensity, intimacy, and strangeness. In some way, selfies reach back to the Greek theatrical idea of methexis—a group sharing wherein the speaker addresses the audience directly, much like when comic actors look at the TV camera and make a face. Finally, fascinatingly, the genre wasn’t created by artists.

Let’s stipulate that most selfies are silly, typical, boring. Guys flexing muscles, girls making pouty lips (“duckface”), people mugging in bars or throwing gang signs or posing with monuments or someone famous. Still, the new genre has its earmarks. Excluding those taken in mirrors—a distinct subset of this universe—selfies are nearly always taken from within an arm’s length of the subject. For this reason the cropping and composition of selfies are very different from those of all preceding self-portraiture. There is the near-constant visual presence of one of the photographer’s arms, typically the one holding the camera. Bad camera angles predominate, as the subject is nearly always off-center.

In 2008, she was signed by Aditya Chopra for a three-film contract with Yash Raj Films and consequently made her acting debut in Chopra’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. She later received critical acclaim for her role as an ambitious wedding planner in the 2010 romantic comedy Band Baaja Baaraat.[3] Both films earned her Best Actress nominations at the Filmfare Awards.[4] Sharma later gathered critical appreciation for her performance in the 2012 romantic drama Jab Tak Hai Jaan, which earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. Due to these prime achievements, Sharma has often been noted as one of the most promising contemporary actresses of Hindi cinema Sharma says she originally wished to make it big in the modeling world but had no strong aspirations for films.[7] She began her modeling career at the Lakme Fashion Week as a model for Wendell Rodricks’s Les Vamps Show and was picked to be Rodricks’s finale model at the Spring Summer ‘07 Collection. Since then she has done campaigns for Silk & Shine, Whisper, Nathella Jewelry and Fiat Palio. Her first acting role was in Aditya Chopra’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008) opposite Shahrukh Khan. Her performance was appreciated with film critic Taran Adarsh stating, “Anushka looks the character and surprises you with a confident performance. It’s no small achievement to share screen space with an actor of the caliber of SRK and Anushka manages it very well from start to end.”[8] The film received positive reviews and was declared a blockbuster, and had been concluded as the second-highest grossing film of all-time to that point by the end of the year

Sharma was last seen in Vishal Bharadwaj’s Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, a political satire set in the rustic surroundings of a village in Haryana. Co-starring alongside Pankaj Kapur, Imran Khan and Shabana Azmi, Sharma played the role of Bijlee Mandola, a strong headed, girl who is also a spoilt brat. Despite the hype, the film generated mixed reviews from critics[26] and underperformed at the box office.[27][28] Whilst many critics noted that Sharma was being stereotyped as the loud, bubbly girl, Sharma’s performance attracted mixed reviews from critics, much like the film. Raja Sen noted that she “is great in a couple of scenes near the climax,”[29] though Kanika Sikka was more critical, calling her performance “unconvincing.” Sharma has decided against speaking of her personal life in public.[35] During the filming of Band Baaja Baaraat (2010) and Ladies vs Ricky Bahl (2011), Sharma was constantly reported to being in an on-off

“Her first acting role was in Aditya Chopra’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008) opposite Shahrukh Khan. Her performance was appreciated. It’s no small achievement to share screen space with an actor of the caliber of SRK” relationship with co-star Ranveer Singh. However, Sharma and Singh both denied the allegations.[36] Despite the fact it was denied, the media continued to report the news and they were last reported to have broken up in August 2012 Sharma is currently shooting for Rajkumar Hirani’s political satire P.K. alongside Aamir Khan, as well as Anurag Kashyap’s periodic love story Bombay Velvet, in which she is cast alongside Ranbir Kapoor. eepika Padukone (pronounced [d̪ iːpɪkaː pəɖʊkoːɳ]; born 5 January 1986) is an Indian film actress and model. She has established a successful career in Bollywood films, and is cited in the media as one of the most popular and attractive Indian celebrities. Padukone, the daughter of the badminton player Prakash Padukone, was born in Copenhagen and raised in Bangalore. As a teenager she played badminton in national level championships, but left her career in sport to become a fashion model. She soon received offers for film roles, and made her acting debut in 2006 as the titular character of the Kannada film Aishwarya. Padukone then played dual roles in her first Bollywood release—the 2007 blockbuster Om Shanti Om—and won a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Padukone received praise for portraying the lead female roles in the 2009 romance Love Aaj Kal and the 2010 drama Lafangey Parindey, but her performances in the 2008 romantic comedy Bachna Ae Haseeno and the 2010 comedy Housefull met with negative reviews. She followed it with roles in a series of commercially unsuccessful films that failed to propel her career forward. The 2012 box office hit Cocktail marked a significant turning point in her career, earning her critical acclaim and Best Actress nominations at several award ceremonies. In 2013, Padukone established herself as a leading actress of Hindi cinema by playing primary roles in the comedies Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Chennai Express (both of which rank among the highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time), and won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in the tragic romance Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. Alongside her acting career, Padukone participates in stage shows, has written columns for an Indian newspaper, and is a prominent celebrity endorser for brands and products. She also played baseball in a few state level tournaments.[9] While concentrating on her education and sporting career, Padukone also worked as a child model, first appearing in a couple of advertising campaigns at the age of eight.[10] In the tenth grade, she changed focus and decided to become a fashion model. She later explained, “I realised that I was playing the game only because it ran in the family. In 2005, she made her runway debut at the Lakme Fashion Week for designer Suneet Varma, and won the “Model of the Year” award at the Kingfisher Fashion Awards.[15][16] Padukone’s fame increased when she appeared in a highly popular print campaign for the 2006 Kingfisher Calendar;[17] the designer Wendell Rodricks commented, “Since Aishwarya Rai, we haven’t had a girl as beautiful and fresh.”[18] Rodricks had spotted her at a Ganjam jewellery class he was teaching and signed her up with the Matrix agency.[19] At the age of 21, Padukone relocated to Mumbai and stayed at her aunt’s home.[6] That year, she gained wider recognition by featuring in the music video for Himesh Reshammiya’s song “Naam Hai Tera.”[20] Padukone soon began to receive offers for film roles.
