Don’t just stare at the sea, dive into its sensory delights on an unforgettable voyage, with a timeless ship. How long has it been since you felt the sea breeze in your hair? Since your world bobbed gently up and down in the sunshine, sound-tracked simply by a chorus of seabirds? Since you stood on a deck and smiled – looking first down to your feet and then up towards a horizon full of possibilities? How long has it been since you were sailing on Christian Radich? How do we get started again and what does the future look like? With vaccination programmes rolling out and an overwhelming human desire to break free from the shackles of ‘home’, Christian Radich will sail south again, We believe new health and safety routines will be in place and we feel confident enough to once again, set sail towards Europe in August. We can assure you that The Christian Radich Foundation guarantees to waive all claims and refund all payments if we have to cancel a voyage, or trainees are, prevented from participating, due to covid-19. Sea Europe is a set of voyages from Oslo, south along the European coastline and finally into The Mediterranean, visiting Germany, France, Spain, Portugal and Sardinia, Italy, before it ends in Malaga. After Sea Norway, Christian Radich leaves Oslo August 7. Heading south and to a reopening in Europe. You are a trainee on board and you get introduced to the world of tall ships and with working with sails and ropes. We recommend you to join one of the watchteams.

First stop is Bremerhaven and the Sail Festival postponed from last year. The city welcomes tall ships from near and far to the Seaside City of Bremerhaven and "Lütte Sail Bremerhaven 2021." All the ships will line the quays and invite you to visit them. Musical highlights and a varied supporting program will fascinate young and old.

Cherbourg has a deep natural harbour backed by steep wooded hillsides. Centuries ago, it was an obvious place for a fortified port. Cherbourg is one of France’s important Channel ports and it is one of the best-connected ferry ports in France. Cherbourg has a history of seafarers and adventure and now it is our turn to go into the Channel and sail to A Coruña.

We have to pass the “infamous” Bay of Biscay. It should be quite calm this time of year. In A Coruña we will meet the Tall Ship Fleet. A Coruña, has previously been awarded the best Tall Ship festival. We look forward to stay here during the festival. You can buy o ne night extra after arrival and stay on board as well.

Cruise in Company, is sometimes called a “Guest Port Programme.” It is not a race – it is an opportunity to take things at a more leisurely pace. You will have more time to enjoy the company of the rest of the fleet, take in your surroundings, and bond with your crewmates.

We are sailing southwards along the beautiful coast of northern Spain and Portugal towards Lisbon. After one day’s sailing from A Coruña, we plan to anchorage in the Parque Nacional de las Islas Atlánticas (National Park of the Atlantic Islands), 120 nautic miles south of A Coruña, just in the mouth of Ría de Vigo.

The crew can disembark by tenders, go to the beaches, swim, walk on the paths on the islands and enjoy the national park and the sunny end of the summer in Spain. After this lovely stopover, we continue against charming Lisbon, Portugal’s capital.

of Cadiz has a nice old town, and many of the trainees would enjoy some extra days in this area. The “sherry town” Jerez and Malaga is a couple of hours bus drive, away. Before travelling around, we have to wait for the price giving ceremony and final festival in Cadiz.

Cádiz is one of the oldest cities in southwest Europe, and its history can tell about seafarers and adventure. After three days of Tall Ship Festival and the final price-giving ceremony, we head for the Mediterranean. The first adventure is passing the Strait of Gibraltar, between Africa and Europe!

It is stunning and you are trainee aboard Christian Radich, one of the most famous tall ships in the world! It is still summer in the Mediterranean at this time of the year. The winds are warm, they can give us good sailing, but it can also be calm.

There are so many beautiful places along the southern coast of Spain, for this voyage, we have chosen Tarragona for the final stop, if you don’t want to join us further you disembark here. Barcelona is less than two hour’s drive from Tarragona if you want to combine the voyage with a weekend in this city.

Welcome to sail with the Christian Radich in the Mediterranean. Maybe you will spend a few days in Tarragona by the coast of Catalonia. Tarragona was an important city even to Romans, so the history is old. The more famous Barcelona is not far away. We give you a unique change to sail a Tallship in the Mediterranean, embarking in Tarragona.

It is late summer and the days are still warm. You are a trainee on board and you participate in the work with sails and ropes. After four days at sea, the ship will be moored in Cagliari, south on Sardinia.

We are now in Italy. Like so many other Mediterranean towns Cagliari is built around a fortress, the heart of the old town. Sardinia is famous for having the clearest waters in the Mediterranean and you find long white beaches all over the island.

Cagliari was like many other towns by the coast, built around a fortress, the heart of the old town. Sardinia is famous for having the clearest waters in the Mediterranean and you find long white beaches all over the island.

The voyage across the Mediterranean back to Spain and Alicante take four days. Sunday you will settle on board, if you didn’t arrive earlier, and early Monday morning we sail out in the ocean for new adventures!

Alicante is a good starting-point for a voyage. It is easy access from all over to this popular tourist-place. The distance between Alicante and Malaga is not far, but sailing is drifting and going where the winds take you. On this voyage, we have plenty of time to just be on board the ship and feel the winds, the weather and the Mediterranean!

On former voyages, we have even anchored and jumped in the water. That is something! After four days in the Mediterranean, we moor in Malaga, another city known for sun and beautiful beaches.

The city has a long history. It is actually one of the world’s oldest cities, founded in the 700’s. Enjoy a day or two here before you travel home.

CHRISTIAN RADICH Christian Radich was built by Framnæs Mech. Yard in 1937. She was built as a sail training ship: the orlops (dormitories) had capacity for berthing 80-90 students (maximum 60 today after renovation), a large galley for learning to cook, carpentry training, and earlier there was also a machine shop on board (where the galley is now) for the training of engineers. The purpose of the training ship was to train sailors. Sailing-ships were the usual vessels around the turn of the century and that is why the sailing ships continued as a school ship later on. Not many can measure themselves against her, neither in size, beauty nor qualities. To participate on a voyage aboard the “Christian Radich” is an adventure as well as an opportunity to learn something about the life on board a sailing ship. – And who knows, maybe an opportunity to learn something about yourself too?

LIFE ON BOARD Have you ever dreamed about the thrill of taking the helm and steering hundreds of tons of majestic sailing ship across the ocean?

During your time aboard, you can experience steering, climbing aloft, setting the sails and living on a towering beauty of a tall ship, you can do it while enjoying t he sea, the horizon and the Mediterranean. No days will be the same. One could see you setting & trimming sails, steering, navigating and learning the ways of the open sea; the next you might spend enjoying the sea with the sun in your face, swaying in a h ammock with a good book, taking photos or discussing the ways of

the world with your fellow adventurers over a cup of coffee. As a trainee, you may find yourself taking the helm at night, watching dolphins play in the bow waves and whales pass by, while the others sleep and the only sound is the wind in the sails. And you will remember falling asleep as moonlight and phosphorescence flash in a dark sea, listening to the endless sound of breaking bow waves. Things to bring

The shop on board

Most important is that you bring some warm clothes, clothes that are water- and windproof, and good shoes. Even if you sail in summer, it can be cold at sea, especially on a night watch. We recommend that you bring with you:

In the small shop you can buy some snacks, chocolate, soft drinks, toiletries and souvenirs.

• Passport • Sleeping bag, not too warm • Warm and waterproof clothing • Cap • Gloves • Toiletries • Suntan lotion • Sunglasses • Shoes with rubber soles, or rubber boots • Towel • Personal medicines • Mobil charger • Small backpack if going ashore • Choose clothes that may take stains • Pack in a soft bag without wheels. The bag shall be stored into your locker, which takes 120 liters. • A part of the locker can be locked with a small p adlock that you bring with you or purchase on board.

Mobile phone and power The mobile phone has no coverage when we are in open sea. Should a situation require contact with people ashore, the s hip and the office will assists you. Power supply on board is 220 VAC. Washing clothes It’s not possible to wash your clothes on board. If yourvoyage are longer than one week, you may contact the s ergeant in order to use the ships washing machine. The ships have limited space for luggage. A bag which takes 120 litres is what you can bring onboard on the voyage.

HARBOURS Sea Europe starts in Oslo in August and the last port of Call is Malaga in early October. We will visit 5 countries and 10 different port of Calls, from larger cities to smaller Mediterranean towns. All of them unique and with different experiences waiting for you.

In Bremerhaven, a sailingfestival “Lütte Sail Bremerhaven” is waiting for those who love the sights of old sailing ships. The Tall Ship Ports have prepared for the event a couple of years before they can welcome the fleet. Sail-ships in all sizes arrive in the harbour, from the big Class A ships to the smaller sailboats. They are welcomed by local boats an people waving on the shore. When the ships are moored at the quayside and the trainees can go ashore, they are met by a traditional festival. Musicians,

a ctivities for the whole family and trucks with local food along the quayside. All the ships invite people to visit them at “open ship” and it is a great feeling to meet fellow trainees from other ships. The harbour organize sports-events, sailing-parade and activities for the crew. The price giving ceremony and a huge firework usually ends it all. After three days, the ships are ready for the sea again, either another race or the more relaxed cruise-in-company.

After the final price-giving ceremony in Cadiz Christian Radich is headed for adventures in the Mediterranean. In the Mediterranean cities, you can enjoy the sun, swim in the ocean and walk around in the Old City. They are all built around a fortress, defending the city in the old days, every place has it’s own history, interesting to explore, to see, feel and taste.

LOCAL FOOD We bring a lot of good food on board from Oslo, but we have to buy more in the ports we visit during the voyage. Our steward are really looking forward to buy and bring on board local, fresh ingredients and serve local specialties to our fellow sailors. We have visited the places before, and the steward know where to find the local shops and the local markets. He knows where in Cadiz he can get the best shellfish, the special chorizo and local ham. Talking

about Cadiz, he will probably also take some sherry on board from here. Although the Mediterranean food is more or less the same, each place has its own taste. That is why the local cheese from Tarragona taste different from the one from Malaga. The same goes for the local wine. At Sea Europe, our steward gives us the pleasure of tasting all the local specialties!

A STORY FROM LAST TIME IN THE MEDITERRANEAN – I have travelled to over 90 countries in my life but the Radich voyage between Mallorca and Sardinia was such a wonderful and unique experience! My most vivid memories are of the sea – at night when it reflected the brilliant stars and Milky Way cascading across the sky overhead, visible between the glowing sails. And during the day, when the bright sunshine turned the water a cobalt blue colour and highlighted the torpedo shaped dolphins who leapt the waves adjacent to our bow and turtles swimming nearby.

The work was challenging and rewarding as well. I volunteered to join the team who climbed to the highest yard on the mainmast to reef the royal and then I took the helm a couple times during a pressing storm. Then since we were a smaller group all our muscle power was well, used to adjust or brace the yards. Even so, many still had the chance to sun bathe or shop in the ships store while sailing, and once on shore to go biking, hiking or take the recommended tour of the islands. Right from the start, the crew were all so welcoming – from the moment when you walked up the gang – way to join the ship until the moment you left it, at 5:30 AM in my case. During our watches, they trained us well and believed in our abilities so there was mutual respect and good teamwork. The captain was very informative giving us regular updates as to our position and the weather, while lessons from the rest of the crew helped us improve our sailing skills and understanding of the history of ship. In addition, the kitchen staff worked hard

to produce amazing meals a nd surprise treats like the delicious salted caramel brownies on my last day.
