It is perfectly natural for boys of your age to feel that you have grown out of school and are itching for new challenges and experiences. Over your final three weeks at Radley we will be providing a series of lectures, and workshops designed to give you the best possible start to your life post-Radley. They are divided into ten strands:

You can opt to do as many courses as you like and we will do our best to accommodate what you choose.

1. From the Horse's mouth: What is University really like? Learn from recent Old Radleian, Paddy Langdale what university is all about. Note - this course will be completely uncensored by Dons so we can take no responsibility for what is said!

Paddy was Senior Prefect at Radley 2013-2018 and is currently studying History at the University of Exeter where he captained the freshers 1st XV. He has been a team mentor for the National Citizens Service and has completed an internship in the forensic department of KPMG.


2. Study Skills An Introduction to University Study Skills (RKM)

1 session

Dr McMahon will explain how studying at university is different from studying at Radley and give tips on how to avoid becoming overwhelmed by work in the first weeks of university.

The Cornell Noting System (KAM)

1 session

There are many different ways of taking notes in university. However, the Cornell Note Taking technique that is proven to be particularly efficient and also makes it a lot easier to review notes, for example when preparing for an exam.

Thinking Allowed (DLC)

1 session

An opportunity to learn about the ways in which our brains lie to us constantly - crucial fallacies, cognitive biases and incorrect beliefs. The course will be based on the You Are Not So Smart Podcast, as well as Predictably Irrational, by Dan Ariely.

Critical Thinking - Am I Right? (MEW)

1 session

Our minds often reach judgements before we are even aware of it, and our conscious minds too easily want credit for a decision made by our unconscious intuitions. But are we right when we think that the monster is chasing the other monster, what does this mean for human reason, and what does it mean to actually know, rather than believe something?


3. Speaking with Confidence A Short course in public speaking (VKB)

1 session

This course is designed to help with vocal techniques, articulation, body language and clarity of speech to engage an audience.

Public speaking - what we can learn from the greats (JASS)

1 session

A brief history of some great speeches and speakers - some reading, plenty of watching. Towards the end boys can feed that into a speech of their own on one of a range of topics.


4. Learn to Code There are plenty of great coding courses available online but many are daunting for beginners. This is your opportunity to try your hand at coding with the support of the Radley IT team behind you. Choose from: • • •

5. Develop your Creative Skills Drawing from Scratch (MCH)

2 sessions

Beginners drawing course, only a pencil, an eraser and paper needed.

Fusion 360 (RJ)

2 sessions

Improve your CAD skills – from novice to expert in 6 lessons!

3D Printing (BRK)

2 sessions

Form your CAD creations to a physical 3D print out.

Pro-photos with an iPhone (CPMM) Learn how to take 'pro-photos' just using your iPhone.

6. Looking after your (and other peoples’) Money Open University Money Management Course (SRM / JRM)

2 sessions

An OU Open Learning course. You will simply need to log-in, enrol on the course and then undertake the course in your own time, receiving a ‘Statement of Participation’ from the OU once they have finished the course. It will conclude with a lesson given by SRM / JER on ‘financial common sense’.

The Finances of Radley College (AA)

1 session

The Bursar of Radley College, Andrew Ashton gives insights into what it is like managing the finances of a company with 500 employees and a £30M turnover.

Finance: what is it? (Will Maydon)

1 session

Will Maydon (OR) is a director of Campion Capital responsible for distribution of funds to a number of wealth managers, family offices, pension funds and multi-managers in the UK, South Africa and Switzerland. Talk followed by Q&A.


7. Get to know the World Making the most of a gap year / university holidays

1 session (RT)

Ideas, planning, pitfalls and making holiday time worthwhile. Advice included from three recent ORs

Whether you want to learn a few phrases in preparation for a gap year in Brazil or to impress when applying for an internship in Shanghai, language skills are always useful. Choose from:

8. Learn to Cook Cooking with confidence (SB)

3 sessions

How to plan, prepare and produce three meals that will win you friends and admirers. World food (SHD)

Exploration different food cultures. Some practical as well as theoretical elements. Start Smoking (BJH)

Summer is all about smoking outdoors. Smoking can be cool, if you keep your heat source away from the food, or it can be hot. I'll talk you through simple designs, building and how to use your smoker for a variety of foods. Cooking the basics (CPMM)

Learn how to cook some essentials in a live cook-along: • • •

Potatoes - roast, mashed and hasselback, Cauliflower cheese, Spaghetti Bolognese.

Three Traditional Bakes (JDR) Learn how to make three traditional bakes: • • •

9. Self-Care Digital Detox (Tanya Goodin)

1 session

Tanya has spent her entire career focused on the interaction between people and technology. First as an award-winning digital entrepreneur, now as a digital detox evangelist, tech ethicist, and author. For 20+ years she was founder and CEO of one of the UK’s first digital marketing agencies, now she is a digital consultant to brands and schools and founder of the digital detox movement.

Approaches to developing a positive attitude and good mental health.

Keeping Fit beyond Radley Keeping fit at Radley is relatively straightforward because of the structures in place. But what about at University and beyond? Choose from • •
