These instructions describe how it is possible with the use of a set of gauges to determine whether a Raket 95 engine is in its original condition or if it has been modified in an impermissible manner.
Radne Motor AB has produced a gauge kit consisting of five stainless steel gauges. The gauge kit can be purchased from Radne Motor.
If an engine passes all the checks described in these instructions, then it has not been modified in a manner such that the engine’s power, torque or maximum RPMs have been affected.
Persons receiving a gauge kit are themselves responsible for it being used in a manner such that no discussion will arise concerning the condition of the gauges, i.e. whether the dimensions that a gauge is indicating have been altered by prior usage of the gauge.
Radne Motor guarantees that the gauges are correct with a tolerance of +/- 0.02 mm upon delivery.
If an engine does not pass one or more of the checks in this description, regardless of which one in specific, then the engine has been modified and will not be approved for use in competition. These instructions were created by Radne Motor AB and are recommended by the Karting Commission of the Swedish Automobile Sports Federation for use with the start of the 2011 season (1 February 2011).

1. Measurement of the squish gap, i.e. the minimum distance between the piston crown and cylinder head To make the measurement, a tin wire of a diameter of 2 mm will be used. The measurement will be performed on both sides of the spark plug hole. Feed the wire in such that approx. 10 mm of the wire is pressed together when the piston is slowly moved one (1) time over its upper dead centre position by turning the flywheel. The measurement is then repeated one time on the side of the piston that in on the flywheel side and one time on the coupling side. The flattened (pressed together) part of the tin wire is then measured with a vernier calliper that has a measurement precision of 0.02 mm. The smallest measurement of the squish gap that is measured in this manner must not be less than 0.80 mm. Remarks: If the measurement is measured with a vernier calliper with a digital read-out and a precision of +/- 0.02 mm, the reading may not be less than 0.80 mm. The track’s vernier calliper applies.

2. Measurement of combustion chamber volume Prior to measurement of the combustion chamber’s volume, the engine must be positioned such that the plane around the spark plug hole is horizontal, i.e. the engine is somewhat tilted. Then place the piston in its highest position = upper dead centre position. Fill the burette with a 50/50 mixture of oil and petrol. Then fill with the oil mixture through the spark plug hole until the oil mixture reaches precisely up to the plane around the spark plug hole, i.e. the oil mixture is filled up to the uppermost spark plug thread. The smallest volume that may be measured is 11.0 ml. The precision of this measurement is estimated to be +/- 0.2 ml corresponding to one section on the burette. Hence a measured volume of 10.8 ml must be approved. The measurement cannot be repeated before the combustion chamber has been properly cleaned of oil from the previous measurement. If the measurement shows a far too small volume for the combustion chamber, then the engine must be dismounted in order to determine whether there is carbonisation on the piston and cylinder head that could have caused a diminishment of the volume. Carbonisation must be removed before a new measurement is undertaken.

3. Measurement of cylinder height on the inlet side The cylinder must be detached, however the piston may remain on the connecting rod. With the use of gauge number 1, Piston Height Inlet Side Gauge, it can be checked that the piston has the correct height on the inlet side. The gauge must not be able to pass over the shortest distance from the piston crown down to the flat surface at the very bottom of the piston (see picture) when the gauge is held parallel to the side of the piston. Place, for example, the lower edge of the gauge on the flat bottom edge. It must not be possible to move the gauge in over the piston crown.

4. Check of inlet port’s lowest height The cylinder must be detached to perform the check. Gauge number 3, Inlet Port Gauge, is placed over the lowest part of the bottom edge of the inlet port and held closely against the cylinder wall. With a thickness gauge, the gap is then measured between the gauge’s outer measurement shoulder and the cylinder pedestal. This gap may not exceed 0.7 mm. Remarks: A thickness gauge of good quality normally has a tolerance of better than 0.05 mm. Thus a thickness gauge of 0.7 mm will fit precisely, but not a thickness gauge of 0.75 mm.

5. Check of lowest height of air booster ports The cylinder must be detached to perform the check. Gauge number 4, Air Booster Port Gauge, is placed over the lower edge of an air booster port and held closely against the cylinder wall. With a thickness gauge, the gap is then measured between the gauge’s outer measurement shoulder and the cylinder pedestal. The measurement is repeated for both the air booster ports. This gap may not exceed 0.7 mm. Remarks: A thickness gauge of good quality normally has a tolerance of better than 0.05 mm. Thus a thickness gauge of 0.7 mm will fit precisely, but not a thickness gauge of 0.75 mm.

6. Check of exhaust port’s highest height The cylinder must be detached to perform the check. Gauge number 2, Exhaust Port Gauge, is placed against the highest point on the exhaust port and held closely against the cylinder wall. With a thickness gauge, the gap is then measured between the gauge’s outer measurement shoulder and the cylinder pedestal. This gap must be at least 0.7 mm. Remarks: A thickness gauge of good quality normally has a tolerance of better than 0.05 mm. Thus a 0.7 mm thickness gauge must fit precisely in place. If a thickness gauge with a specified thickness of 0.65 mm fits into place between the measurement shoulder and the cylinder pedestal, then the exhaust port is too high and cannot be approved.

7. Measurement of smallest interior width of crankcase The check is performed on a mounted engine with the cylinder lifted out. The interior width of the crankcase is checked with gauge 5, Crank Case Width Gauge, which must fit in place without any problems everywhere the check is made.
