BIkES SPORTS LIfESTYLE

The mountainbike racing season 2017 is set to be a turning point in the history of RADON bikes. This season we’ll be enriching both the UCI Cross-Country and Downhill World Cup competitions with two teams. We have been achieving top positions with our bikes in product tests in leading trade magazines for many years now. It is therefore only natural that we should be involved in professional cycle sport. The best bikes must be ridden, tested and consistently developed by the best athletes; therefore I’m particularly proud that we can count on a total of 8 world champions on the RADON FACTORY TEAM. As an active participant in motor sport I understand that I need the challenges that are presented in professional sport and also the feedback from pro riders if I want to optimise my product right down to the smallest detail. This doesn’t only apply to the race bikes but also to the very important category of e-mountainbikes. In addition, professional sport provides a perfect stage to deliver international exposure to the RADON brand name. However despite all the innovations on the racing scene RADON will continue to stay true to its cause in 2017: RADON bikes will remain available at outstanding value-for-money prices via direct sales through our unique service partner network We wish you all happy reading with this year’s Oversized catalogue and a great 2017 season.

Heading South for Warmer Climes The newly formed RADON XC FACTORY RACING TEAM has some really ambitious aims as it prepares for the new World Cup season in 2017. The domestic events in Albstadt (D) and Lenzerheider (CH) are indeed the absolute highlights for a team of Swiss athletes and a German main sponsor; however the training conditions at home are anything but ideal at the start of the year. There-

04

fore at the beginning of February the order of the day for the riders Alessandra, Kathrin, Mathias, mechanic Remo, physiotherapist Tobias and of course manager Ralph was to pack their suitcases and hop on a plane for warmer southern climes, following the route of the native migratory birds. For the team that meant a trip to Stellenbosch in South Africa from 6 to 20 February where they had

 14 hours of sunshine per day in February. South Africa offers perfect conditions for training.

the perfect conditions to put a fine edge on their preparations for the upcoming season. While the northern hemisphere descends into darkness and unpleasantly cold temperatures prevail in February, in South Africa the sun rises at 6 a.m. and does not set before 8 p.m. This allows the riders to complete as many as 2 – 3 training sessions per day and still have time available for other things in between. In the morning the schedule consists of either interval training on the road, weight training or jogging. In the afternoon the team then heads out onto the trails in and around Stellenbosch so the

riders can tweak their technique. And once a week the riders jump on their roadbikes and do a steady 5-hour training ride as a team. The periods between the actual training sessions are particularly important in the first season with a new equipment supplier. These periods present an opportunity to work on the new JEALOUS race bikes. Riders‘ positions on the bike are optimised, tyre combinations are tested and suspension setups fine-tuned – this is a rigid schedule for riders and mechanics alike. But it is of course also about spending time together as a team and developing a sense of

 Fine-tuning the bikes is almost as important as the training itself.

Udo Lindenberg Udo Lindenberg has been an icon in the German music industry for as long as anyone can remember. The panic rocker with the characteristic trilby hat is now 70 years old and continues to appear on stage. Despite his many highs and lows in life and extremely extravagant lifestyle he has no plans to stop performing any time soon. He began in the music business at an early age. He started out in music as a drummer in various bands. However it wasn‘t until the seventies that he decided to start writing and performing his own songs. It‘s his mumbling voice that‘s particularly catchy, and this has without doubt gained him a high degree of recognition. His quirkiness has paid off for him. Lindenberg has already won everything there is to win in the German music industry. He has also received multiple awards not only for his lifelong contribution to the music industry, but also for his long-standing contribution to social causes. SAYING NO TO CONVENTION! With his “Udo Lindenberg Cultural Foundation“ the musician has demonstrated that he is not merely someone who hogs the spotlight, but uses his status as a public figure to do something for a good cause and make the world a better place. The foundation is inspired, like Lindenberg himself, by the writer Hermann Hesse and promotes the spirit of his life and literary work. The “Panic Prize“, which is awarded every two years, offers young musicians the opportunity to unlock their artistic talent. The only preconditions are that

the lyrics are in German and do not swim with the conventional musical tide. Lindenberg‘s mentality of not sticking to any kind of conventions is mirrored in the contest. Young people have the opportunity to have their voices heard and say what is often not said in their lyrics. Alongside his political and musical commitment the man with the trilby hat also devotes a lot of his time to improving education and tackling poverty. He has already launched many projects in Africa and helped many people there achieve a better life for themselves. “MORE ENDURING THAN TIME!“ A MUSICAL PEARL Since 29.04.2016 fans have been able to enjoy Udo Lindenberg‘s 35th studio album. After eight years the panic rocker is back with the album “More Enduring than time.“ And all the fans are in agreement that the wait has been well worthwhile! The album is being widely acclaimed as his best to date and received a platinum award shortly after its release. Uncustomarily, not all 15 tracks on the album are rock music songs. There are many easy listening and more thoughtful tracks. In these titles Lindenberg reflects on life in general and also on his own. He focuses in particular on his battle with alcohol abuse and how he finally turned his life around. On this album, however, Udo also remains true to his own style and demonstrates that he isn‘t willing to compromise his musical principles for anyone.

The 40 Year Revolution The LP12 has been extracting the maximum possible amount of information from records for over 35 years and has been in production longer than any other Hi-Fi product – a benchmark for all other record players to measure up to. Production of the exclusive LINN SONDEK LP 12 Highland Park 40th Anniversary is limited to 40 devices worldwide. A LP 12 with a Keel sub-chassis, EKOS SE pick-up arm, Kandid pickup, RADIKAL motor control unit and an integrated URIKA phono amplifier. The entire system is encased in an exclusive solid oak housing using wood from whiskey barrels that originated from the single malt distillery HIGHLAND PARK on the Orkney Islands. Also included is a specially bottled 40-year old whiskey from Highland Park. This whiskey alone is reported to have a collector‘s value of around several thousand euros.

The limited edition record player from Linn was sold out within two days of the 40th anniversary celebrations which took place on 20th and 21st September 2013. Not all the Linn dealers from all over the world who were present at the anniversary celebrations were able to order one of the special edition record players. We, however, were able to secure a special edition LP 12 with its exquisite housing made from oak used in the production of whiskey barrels and can now offer this product to our customers. The LP 12 costs 29.750 Euros including delivery and installation at your home, regardless of where you live in Germany. Information on delivery to other countries is available on request.

Craftwerk Brewing has presented a recent innovation with new Mad Callista Session lager, using the new hops “Callista“ for the first time.

that restaurant owners can offer their patrons the luxury of a freshly pulled pint. The beer Holy Cowl is already offered on draught.

Craftwerk Brewing is extending its existing five product strong range of Hop Head IPA7 American India Pale Ale, Dark Season Sweet Stout, Holy Cowl Belgian Style Tripel, Skipping Stone Summer Ale and Tangerine Dream Single Hop Pale Ale still further with the market launch of the innovation Mad Callista Session lager. The new beer with an original gravity of 9.5% and alcohol content of 3.9% volume gets its name from the “Callista“ hops used in its production. These hops give the beer a refreshing fruity taste resembling passion fruit and lychee coupled with a hint of gooseberry. The product will be available in the Craftwerk online shop from July and also available for export.

“With our new beer Craftwerk Mad Callista and entry onto the restaurant market, we are taking two important steps forward in the development of the brand“, explains Jan Niewodniczanski, the founder of Craftwerk and Head of Technology and Environment at the Bitburger group of breweries. Niewodniczanski, who came to the fore for Craftwerk as part of a new advertising campaign under the slogan “made by individualists for individualists“, added, “In addition, we will be further expanding our exports to Spain, Portugal and Slovenia. Alongside our fortified beer fans we would also like in future to convince other consumers of the high quality and creativity of our fortified beers.“

The Bitburger group of breweries will now also be actively involved in the distribution of Craftwerk‘s product range. The focus will be on the trend-setting cities Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt as well as Cologne and Düsseldorf. During the launch the bottle labeling was revised and now gives in a colourful new design information about the product, taste, hops used, what food the beer is best drunk with and the philosophy of the Craftwerk brand. The beers are offered in handy 12-packs. Restaurant owners can therefore put together their own individual selection of beers which accommodate the tastes of their patrons. In addition, the new Mad Callista beer will also be available in a 15-litre barrel from September so

The self-confessed fortified beer fan will of course in future personally attend selected fairs and events together with master brewer Stefan Hanke and also be on hand behind the bar to answer questions from beer fans. The pilot brewery of the Bitburger group has been working with diverse ingredients, developing new production processes and new beers with varying tastes since 1990.

THIS DRINK WILL REFRESH YOU WITH ITS MILD FRUITY TASTE.

Joost “the boost“ Wichman YOUR PROFESSION I have my own business called 360Boost. With this company I take care of, among other things, the management of the RADON FACTORY DH TEAM. We also, however, build pumptracks and put on pumptrack events. YOUR AGE I feel as though I’m 21 although I’m actually 39. WHAT IS TOTAL HAPPINESS IN YOUR LIFE? I thought that it would be to become world champion, but after the birth of my second son I have to say that my two children and wife represent heaven on earth for me. Happiness for me is to see my family filled with joy. WHAT WOULD BE THE WORST THING THAT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU IN LIFE? When I was 18, my best friend was killed in an accident. WHERE WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO LIVE? In the summer I’d like to live in British Colombia/ Canada and in winter somewhere where I can still ride my bike and my family is near me. I don’t like the cold or when I don’t have very much space like in a city. Perhaps Australia wouldn’t be a bad place to live. However, I am terrified of snakes and large spiders. WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU VALUE IN A MAN? That he is straight to point and clear, not like women.

20

wHAT QUALITIES DO yOU vALUE IN A wOMAN? That women aren’t always straight to the point and behave on the whole with political correctness. This tends to cause fewer problems than when one is too straightforward and honest. wHAT DO yOU ENJOy DOING MOST? Riding on the pumptrack with my son and getting out and about with my family. wHAT IS yOUR MAIN CHARACTER TRAIT? I am shy, that’s why many people think I’m arrogant. wHAT DO yOU vALUE MOST IN yOUR FRIENDS? That I can rely on them when I need their help. wHAT wAS yOUR BIGGEST MISTAkE? Well…, no idea really. wHAT IS yOUR MAIN DREAM IN LIFE? That my family stays healthy. wHAT IS yOUR MOTTO? If you are in balance, you are just not going fast enough. wHERE DO yOU SEE yOURSELF IN 5 yEARS? Standing on a BMX course watching my son compete. wHAT CAR wOULD yOU LIkE TO DRIvE ONE DAy? I am not so keen on cars but a Ford F150 pick-up would be awesome.

4 STARTER MODEL TRAIL BIKES TEST – BIKE 04/2017

“An aluminium frame with a carbon rocker – that‘s something pretty unique in this price range. On top of that the lightest wheels in the test means that it‘s little wonder that the direct seller from Bonn lined up with the lightest bike overall in the test field. And this is just one reason why the SKEEN shows its competitors a clean pair of heels on the climbs. But it‘s also the competitive position on the bike, the steep seat angle and the drive-train-neutral rear end that make climbing so much easier. If the rider wants to drop the saddle at the start of the singletrail, he first has to wiggle out the mini-tool from his back pocket. However the rider can quickly upgrade to a saddle with a quick release lever. The 2.25 inch wide Nobby-Nic tyres from Schwalbe with their inexpensive Performance carcass somewhat dampen the potential of the RADON on the downhill; nevertheless the 130 mm of fork travel and the well worked geometry with a flat steering angle deliver a really fun ride. The SKEEN achieves a great compromise between lively and smooth handling; however the Monarch rear shock gives the impression of being a little overdamped in comparison to the front fork, and this becomes apparent when the bike is subjected to severe shocks.“

ZR RACE HYBRID

TEST vICTORY IN EMTB 02.2016 AND E-BIkE 02.2016

As the sole mail order seller in the test RADON was able to equip its ZR with premium grade parts and still keep down the cost. The entire package is well coordinated. The tyres on the 29 inch wheels deliver sufficient grip and the rather small frame delivers agile handling; however despite this the bike runs in a straight line and delivers lively handling thanks to the low weight. The Fox front fork does a good job in effectively reducing shocks to the ergonomically well designed cockpit. RADON has also used tried and tested equipment for the drive-train: The Bosch CX drive-train with a 15-tooth sprocket at the front and a 11-42 cassette at the rear delivers a wide transmission-ratio spread and can willingly deal with any very steep section.

MORE SPEED AT THE FRONT, MORE GRIP AT THE REAR “RADON has equipped its super touring bike with two different tyre widths. The front tyre is five millimetres narrower than its counterpart on the rear wheel. The versatile SUNSET also stands out from the crowd with other features, though: The impeccable workmanship of the frame, for example, with its flowing tube transitions, clearly catches the eye. In addition, there‘s the high-end front fork with its conical shaft and the Shimano XT drive-train and brakes as well as top of the range lighting system and reliable rack. A slightly competitive position on the bike tempts the rider into riding more briskly in city traffic just as much as on an extended tour through the countryside. However the bike feels much more at home on the tarmac than on loose terrain. Even the adjustable stem finds favour with us because it‘s both relatively light and sturdy. What‘s odd, however, is that the front end of the frame does tend to veer off sideways when carrying loads of greater than 10 kg on the rack. So be careful with abrupt changes in load! Apart from this the luxurious tourer impresses right across the board.“

SWOOP 170 – BEST Of TEST

“We know the SWOOP. The bike had to show its worth in the enduro test (FREERIDE 1/16) and impressed the testers because it weaved its way confidently through really tough terrain. Although RADON calls this bike a super-enduro machine, it does possess an unmistakeable mini downhill heart in its alloy rear. What was superb was the steep seat angle. This gives the SWOOP a great deal of forward thrust, allowing the rider to pedal more efficiently. The SWOOP’s low overall weight means that it leaves the competition in its wake on trail rides and on the uphill sections.“ DOWNHILL 5 from 6 points Verdict of FREERIDE 03/16 on the SWOOP 170 9.0

“These days, a lot of models get called ‚mini DH bikes‛. The Swoop 170, however, is the real deal. It‘s a two-fisted, downhill brawler. And then there is this: The price is outrageously good. JEALOuS 9.0 SL

IN A TEST Of RACE HARDTAILS COSTINg uP TO 5.000 EuROS

THE NEAT NEw HARDTAIL FROM RADON CAUSES A REAL STIR IN THE BIkE TEST LAB Weighing in at just 1.000 grammes, top marks in the areas of saddle comfort and an excellent STW (stiffness to weight ratio) all combine to make even the pros sit up and take notice. The novice attacks the competition as early as the first climb with its lightweight tyres and overall low weight. The narrow range of gear ratios demands a great deal of power from the rider‘s calves; however for ambitious riders the range of gears is adequate, and after all, Sram’s 11-speed shift system with a 10-42 cassette was still fitted as standard last year. Sram‘s inherently weak Level brakes with a 180 mm disc provide sufficient braking power to the rear wheel. On the downhill the RADON scuttles its way around the bends in a similarly agile fashion to the Scott. The higher stack to reach ratio, however, guarantees a more upright rider position on the bike behind the handlebar, thereby delivering a little more control.

THE BOTTOM LINE “As a budget bike the JEALOUS makes the competition envious. The rider merely has to make compromises on the narrow range of available gears.“ bike-magazin.de

DESIgN & INNOvATION AWARD 2017 RADON JEALOUS 10.0 SL The cross-country routes all over the world are getting tougher and tougher each year. In competition man and machine are pushed to their absolute limits. With the JEALOUS RADON has created a bike that not only shines on the toughest trails, but also pushes every hobby rider to even higher levels of performance. The phenomenally low weight of the frame (890 grammes) was achieved by using a new type of carbon fibre. Nevertheless, RADON doesn’t make any compromises as far as stiffness and safety are con-

34

cerned, and the frame still completely fulfils the DIN Plus Standard. The long and flat geometry lends the bike both responsive and safe handling characteristics. The distinctively shaped frame is equipped with only premium quality components and at an absolutely fair price, which is so typical for RADON. Never before was envy such a desirable characteristic. With the JEALOUS there’s really nothing standing between you and your next podium position. weight: 8.54 kg | Price: 4.999 €

RIDERS ILLuSTRATED Many people who work in the bike industry have surely heard it before: “Blimey, you’ve turned your hobby into a career.“ Even though it is a real privilege to be able to make a living out of one’s passion, only a small minority of those working in the bike industry really spend as much time on the bike as most people would normally assume. One person who can strongly subscribe to the reality of this fact is Boris Krauß. As a pioneer mountainbike fan and passionate drawer Boris was able to make two hobbies a career at the same time following his apprenticeship as a graphic designer and subsequent job in an advertising agency. His success as a designer is visible in many areas. Boris has left his mark on the bike scene with his label “Riders Illustrated“ and created his very own

36

Self-portrait Boris Krauß

and unmistakeable style in projects such as logo design, flyer design, catalogue and poster design, web design or in décor designs for bikes, helmets and cars. His hallmarks are his so-called “style portraits“. “I draw neither cartoons, which often portray people as negative and hyped-up, nor do I do portraits which are supposed to appear very life-like. My “style portraits“ accentuate a person’s typical characteristics and are therefore quite different from a, what is at times, dull photo-realistic portrait.“ Today we were allowed to experience how Boris goes about his work when we commissioned him to draw all the members of the RADON FACTORY RACING TEAM. So that the riders on both teams symbolise togetherness on their respective “style portraits“, we agreed

Manon Carpenter RADON DH Factory Racing Team

Mathias Flückiger RADON XC Factory Racing Team

on a little additional requirement with Boris. “The requirement was to make the riders look a bit like super heroes. I therefore developed a new style of caricature, which I have now called “Hero Style Portrait.“

by using photographs. Not until the first rough drawing has been accepted by the customer does Boris begin with the production of the final drawing, the colouring and the addition of logos, bikes, props or other similar things.

When creating his caricatures, Boris combines completely traditional drawing by hand with the use of the most modern technologies. Thus, the first stroke is made directly onto a large flat screen, which one can draw on and then every further step is made electronically.

Boris gave the riders on the RADON FACTORY TEAMS an early Christmas gift with the “Hero Style Portraits“ when he uploaded the final drawings to the server on 23 December 2016. While working with Boris, the passion he had invested into the project was there for all to see and one could probably only expect this level of commitment from someone who had succeeded in combining his hobby with his profession. However when we reflect on the project, it is obvious that he can’t have had that much time to ride his bike …

The workflow is then made particularly transparent for the people who commissioned the work because they then are able to follow the various steps in the creation of an image and, if necessary, make suggestions or request changes. This then leads to 100 % customer satisfaction throughout. After an initial discussion during which he assesses the needs and requirements of the customer, Boris works on bringing out the key characteristics of the people being drawn

Although the long-term aim is the Olympic Games in 2020, the RADON FACTORY CROSS COUNTRY TEAM is aiming for podium places in the UCI World Cup as well as in national international championships in 2017. RADON has an experienced manager it can count on in Ralph Näf. The three times world champion from Switzerland, who successfully took part in competition up until 2013, has put together a promising team. The squad of XC junior world champion of 2013 Alessandra Keller (SUI/20), Kathrin Stirnemann (SUI/28) world champion in XCE 2014, and the XC junior as well as U23 world champion of 2006/2010 Mathias Flückiger (SUI/28) means that the team consists 100 % of world champions.

MUTI-TASKING BEHIND THE SCENES In 2013 a downhill World Cup team from Switzerland was looking for an English-speaking mechanic who could communicate well with the riders, fans and partners. As one of my friends was already a member of the team, and I myself took part in downhill races in the past, I knew what is important for pro riders and was able to make use of my experience right from the start. After the first few races, I was asked by the owner of the team to work as a full-time specialist for Fox suspension parts and as team mechanic. I accepted the offer and then moved to Switzerland. The team has been riding RADON bikes

44

since 2015 and this was my first encounter with the bike manufacturer based in Bonn. I was of course really pleased that RADON made me the offer to work as chief mechanic for the RADON FACTORY DOWNHILL TEAM. After a short and intensive preparation phase it was time to head out with the new team to the training camp in San Remo. There we all had the opportunity to get to know each other better and fine tune the bikes for the upcoming season. Shortly after the training camp I travelled to Wales to support Manon at the first race in the British DH series. However in my job there is so much more involved than simply

TEAM MECHANIC GAVIN BLACK

taking care of the riders and their bikes at competitive events. At the start of the season and as a qualified carpenter I refurbished the RADON team truck according to the team’s specifications and requirements. I will now be driving our new little gem to all the downhill World Cup events and Crankworx races, as well as to the Cross Country World Cup events that take place in Europe. As soon as the truck’s engine is switched off, that’s when the real work begins. We have to put up the tent, set up the bike repair shop and get the team bikes fit for purpose. With all this work to do I obviously then don’t get that much time to spend on my own favourite bike at the moment, the SLIDE CARBON 160.

The RADON FACTORY DOWNHILL RACING TEAM also really looks like a team of champions. Under the management of four times world champion Joost Wichmann the riders Manon Carpenter (UK/22), world champion in downhill of 2014 and reigning City DH world champion Johannes Fischbach (D/28) and Faustin Fiagret (FRA/22) will be fighting to achieve record-breaking times. Raphaela Richter, who finished the 2016 season as enduro world champion (U21), will take part in selected events to strengthen the team. For downhill events the riders have placed their trust in the RADON SWOOP 200, which was ridden last year by both Johannes Fischbach and Faustin Fiagret. This chassis has demonstrated its potential both in competition and in numerous tests.

gREAT gREATER MANx The British racing motorbike has a four-stroke motor and is chain driven. A wonderful deep sound emanates from the superb air-cooled one cylinder motor. It was originally designed for the 350 cmÂł - 500 cmÂł racing category and in production from 1947 to 1963. Shortly after WWII the first Norton Manx machine was introduced and from then on regularly took part in the TT races on the Isle-of-Man. There is no other motorbike that has been as consistent

54

as the Norton; however the Norton was in fact little more than a slightly improved successor of the machines that had been designed prior to WWII, but with an additional camshaft. The story of the Norton is an enchanting one even though the Norton in time disappeared from the market due to competition from Italian and Japanese motorbikes. The company emerged from WWII and made a fresh start; however the era of the one cylinder motors was over. John Tickle took over the remaining factories and plant and manu-

factured new racing motorbikes for a brief period, but at the end of the 1970s he closed the remaining factories and sold off the remaining plant. Today there are, however, firms which manufacture Norton Manx motorbikes to order and according to the manufacturer’s original specifications since Manx bikes are still much sought after by participants in oldtimer races.

In conclusion, one might say that there isn’t a motorbike that’s more successful than the Norton Manx since there isn’t another bike that took part in and also won as many world championships as this bike. Therefore anyone who has the chance to ride a Norton Manx or to buy one should certainly snap up that chance!

IBIZA BY BIKE Every year up to 140.000 racing cyclists are drawn to the island of Mallorca to prepare for the upcoming racing season. On the largest of the Balearic Islands cycling enthusiasts will find everything their hearts desire – perfect road surfaces, hilly, flat and undulating roads as well as a good range of hotels offering bike hire and bike tour guides. Ibiza has only a sixth of the surface area of Mallorca, and the highest mountain on Ibiza, which is 476 metres above sea level, is still almost 1.000 metres lower than its counterpart on Mallorca – the Puig Major. In addition, Ibiza’s highest point cannot be reached on a roadbike

1 2

56

IT DOESN’T ALWAYS HAVE TO BE MALLORCA since there is no tarmacked road leading to the summit. The answer to the question, “Why cycle on Ibiza, then?“ is thus somewhat surprising and simply that it is the imperfectness of the island that makes it so charming to discover by bike. The most beautiful spots are in those parts of the island that can’t be reached on a roadbike. Therefore an appreciation of the landscape is at the forefront rather than the pursuit of ambitious training schedules. The cycling terrain on Ibiza is perfect for a crossbike such as the RADON SCART.

Tamara has lived on Ibiza since she was a child. She is a sports teacher and fitness trainer and also works in the trendy clubs Amnesia and Space as a waitress. In winter, when most of the party-goers have left the island, she rides mountainbike races. Tamara took us on a tour during which she showed us her favourite spots on the island. We meet Tamara in the early morning where most of the tourists begin their holiday. Just behind the airport are the so-called Salinas. This nature reserve is one of the most important salt production areas in the Mediterranean. The salt from Ibiza has already well known abroad and is been a major success story.

In the early morning light we pass the mountains of salt that are several metres high and then follow the loose gravel trail between the salt basin of the lagoon and reach the Cap de Falco. During the day the trendy beach club serves its guests cocktails and the finest cuisine and offers typical music from the island of Ibiza. In the evening the highlight is the spectacular sunset at the popular location for weddings. However all this is something that we can hardly imagine as we simply enjoy the tranquillity of the morning several hours before opening and observe the aircraft as they take-off and land at the airport.

1  T he Salinas behind the airport give the impression of a kind of lakeland area and even are home to wild flamingos.

3  T he RADON SCART is the perfect companion when your tour takes you through a mixture of gravel and tarmac

2  T he salt mountains of the famous Sal de Ibiza tower above the landscape

4  Just behind the beach the gravel trail is lined with trees that offer shade to the rider

The stretch of beach with the same name as the nature reserve is better known among the tourists. Famous beachside bars such as the Malibu Beach, the Jockey Club or Sa Trinxa attract the odd celebrity to the Salinas. However, Tamara turns off before we reach the official beach car park and heads along a wide gravel track through a little wood. Walkers can walk right along on the coast with its numerous little bays. We finally reach the Torre De Ses Portes, which is the most southerly tip of the island. The little boat houses, which are

embedded into the cliffs and still serve to protect the fishermen’s boats, are typical for Ibiza. If one was ready for a little picnic here, one could take a well earned break which might last for the rest of the day, but Tamara manages to motivate me to carry on with the tour. As we enter the fortified old town in Dalt Vila – or rather climb up to it – I realise that it was worth continuing our tour. The fortress, dating back to

the Middle Ages, was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO and quickly makes me forget my picnic plans with its numerous cafes, bars and restaurants. In addition, colourful cushions placed on the steps invite one to take a seat, and the typical style for the island with everything painted white is something everyone should experience. The Isla Blanca is truly vibrant in its narrow streets and numerous street dealers offer jewellery and handmade arts and crafts. A very mixed crowd

fills the town with life because on Ibiza one may experience colourful birds of paradise, normal tourists, hippies or an old Ibizan lady all harmoniously brought together over a cup of con Leche in a café. However, for all those who wish to enjoy a snack away from the main tourist zones, Ibiza town offers a great deal of highlights between the harbour and the fortress. After we had replenished our sugar levels with an ice-cream at Gelato Ibiza, we headed for the centre of the island.

1  T he old town of Ibiza offers numerous spots for a short break.

3  T he thick walls of the fortress can also be used as a cycle way.

2  T he typical costumes on the island are also a reason why the island is called “the white island“.

4  After leaving the old town there is still plenty of climbing to do and one can enjoy some terrific views.

Our next stop is the little village of Santa Gertrudis, which is in the geographical centre of Ibiza and is also the home to many locals as well as permanent residents of the island. Santa Gertrudis, with its idyllic village square, is particularly popular with painters, sculptors and musicians. In the Bar Costa one can find numerous paintings done by these artists, who during the hippie era were happy to pay for a plate of Serrano Ham and Manchego Cheese with the fruits of their artistic labour.

5  T he ham sandwiches with the famous “Jamon Serrano“ available in the Bar Costa in Santa Gertrudis are a simple must for everyone travelling to Ibiza.

With 30 km in our legs we have already seen a great deal and now head towards the west of the island with its picturesque bays and coves. We are heading for Cala Conta (Platges de Comte). Looking onto the crystal clear water I feel like I’m in the Caribbean and can now fully understand why this bay, that has staged many fashion photo shootings and been a location for numerous music videos, is one of Tamara’s favourite places.

te and experience a wonderful sunset as reward for our tour of 60 extremely varied kilometres in the saddle. It is at this point when the setting sun makes the sea shimmer against a backdrop of ambient spherical sounds from the nearby beach bar, colourful cloths wave in the wind, and hippies go on their pilgrimages to the cliffs to celebrate the setting of the sun that it becomes clear that Ibiza is not merely an island, but an emotion.

As we are staying nearby, we can really enjoy the major highlight this bay has to offer and wrap up the day in this truly magical place. We are fortuna-
