Why this trend? Is it just fashionable or is it a direction of the future? How should a producer like us react? We are directly at the front due to our megastore, making it possible for us to quickly collect market data and as a result, are alive to new developments. The E-bike is now a part of our lives.
Welcome Summer, the heat is on! Our star photographer and really good friend, Stefan Eisend (fanatic uphill biker and racer) seems now only to be seen on his Radon ZR Race Hybrid bike. Focus Magazine tested E-bikes over 3 consecutive editions: Edition 1, urban, Edition 2, trekking and Edition 3 Mountain bikes. Our top seller, Slide 140 is getting a motor transplanted this autumn. In Germany alone the number of E-bikes that have been sold have increased over the past five years to 160% meaning that in 2015 more than half a million E-bikes were bought. Tendency – rising.
At the beginning the E-Bike was scorned on as a precursor to the rollator. But this bike has experienced a massive change of image. The facts speak for themselves; larger radius, comfortable uphill rides, riding-fun due to direct drive and more airstream. State of the art E-motors with considerably greater performance. Lighter, rechargeable batteries with greater distance and shorter recharge times. Integrated accumulator and chic designs. Those who have taken the opportunity to try a Radon E-Bike dismounts with a smile on his face. It’s just pure fun! Ok, it costs; the start in this mobile world isn’t cheap, but as the people of Cologne say, ‘there are no pockets in a shroud’. When we think about that, we can say exactly the same about bikers’ pants as well! Starting at page 168 you’ll find an overview of the service stations and partners where you can test Radon bikes out of opening hours. And, by the way, our E-Bikes have won all 2015 and 2016 reputable tests - Just as a tip! We wish all friends of our brand a sunny and fun filled summer 2016 – with or without battery!
Christopher Stahl and his Radon Team.

Contest of the superlatives Every year there is a long awaited event in Big Bay; the ‘Southeastener’. Big Bay; a small coastal stretch in Cape Town with a beautiful view of Table Mountain. The ‘Southeasterner’; the begin of the constant south east wind opening the start of the most extreme and largest kiteboarding competitions in South Africa. Finally, on 31st January as this strong wind final approached, the competition began. Massive waves and rough winds enabled perfect conditions for powerful propulsion and leaps in breath taking heights. As usual the sporty highlight in this kiteboard mecca stood under the motto ‘Only the finest are selected to ride’. 24 of the world’s best kiteboarders fought against each other for the title ‘King of the air’. Finally, there were only four who were competing against each other for this important title.

On 10th February the winner was crowned. With an exceptionally clean performance and a totally difficult trick, the mega loop KGB, Aaron Hadlow from Britain was able to convince the jury to let him climb on the winner’s platform. Jesse Richman (USA) managed 2nd place and Kevin Langeree (NED) 3rd position. This second consecutive victory enables Hadlow to be the first defending champion in the history of Red Bull,’King of the Air’. Nearly 13 000 competitors followed this mega event in one of the most desirable trophies in kite-sport. Now the pros have moved on as somewhere in the world the wind is blowing just as it should for kite surfers’ hearts. And there again, the motto is; ‘higher, further, and much more adventurous’.

ASTON MARTIN DB5
WHEN ONLY THE BEST IS GOOD ENOUGH 12 | radon-bikes.com
It was one of the most famous film cars in the world. ‘Goldfinger’ brought the Aston Martin DB5’s steering wheel to the world fame. As a style icon it upgraded Thunderball, Golden Eye, Tomorrow never dies, Casino Royal, Skyfall and Spectre with its special effects.

What is it that makes DB 5 so unique? Its selling price (back in the 60s) was identical with that of the contemporary Ferrari. The value today is around one million euros, that of the Ferrari - ten times more. But Aston is still the style icon. DB are the initials of the company’s founder David Brown. The 5 was Aston’s 5th model. The technical details still thrill every old timer fan. On its debut in 1963, it proved itself to be outstanding: the super, superleggera (super light) indicated the elaborate aluminium body (this was designed and developed in Italy for touring), a 4-litre powerful 6 cylinder aluminium engine with above 325 HP in the Vantage version with 3 Weber dual carburettor reached a top speed of over 250 km/h and an acceleration of under 8 seconds was for a GT (Gran Turismo) a clear statement. At the same time Porsche brought out the 356 in the Carrera design with 110 HP and managed – with difficulty- 195 km/h. Mercedes 300SL Gullwing capitulated in all disciplines.
The operating instructions in the typical British style recommended:... ‚This vehical has to be treated with velvet gloves until the driver has got used to the extremely high standard of performance’. This sentence should have been passed on from Q to Bond because as most of you will remember, the BMT 216A (the original Bond car) had to suffer quite a lot under James Bond!

Nakamichi Dragon The Tapedeck of dreams
22 | radon-bikes.com
In the 80s, Nakamichi was producer of high-end-home-entertainment electronic per se. The top model Nakamichi Dragon still has the reputation of being one of the best tapedecks ever to be produced. As the company went redundant, the production of the nobel cassette-players was also discontinued. That’s why the range today is quite limited. With a little luck and the necessary amount of change, it is possible to acquire one of the classics. But, you will have to place at least 1700 euros over the counter to purchase one in a good condition. Music lovers, who relish in indulging in the past and who have always yearned for a Nakamichi Dragon, should not hesitate looking on the Internet at an Online-auction house.

for adventure After A-levels, or in the so-called ‘gap-year’ between Bachelor and Master studies, or in a sabbatical, more and more young people are taking a time out to travel and to get to know the world. Especially popular is the Work and Travel programme.

swop daily life for adventure Work and Travel – this means travelling through a country and seeing how far you can get before having to stay somewhere for a longer time - having to find a job to fill your travel-purse again. With this kind of travelling you have a better insight into the local culture - much more than normal tourists could ever get. Language is freshened up and usually the youngsters who do this find that this is the best time of their life. Work and travel is a synonym for adventure and freedom. Around 200 000 young adults (yearly) follow their dream and jump into this adventure. Whether it’s 3 months, 6 months or a year where daily routine is ignored; yes, it is an adventure, but it still has to be planned. An organisati-
26 | radon-bikes.com
on could be engaged to assist with the planning. These agencies have contacts in the homeland or directly on-site. They can help with visa enquiries, by booking flights, looking for work and finding lodgings. This service isn’t cheap. But, as Work and Travel is the synonym for independence, lots of backpackers just decide to go on their trip without any help from outside. Unplanned – just accepting what comes, when it comes. Irrelevant how you decide; who goes on such a trip will be rewarded. Whilst others are trapped in cubicles of offices, your big decisions for the day could be; surfing, climbing mountains or parachuting. You just enjoy life at the full. When the money’s gone, then it’s time to look for a new job.
Work & Travel
The ‘usual’ backpacker jobs are usually those in gastronomies, tourism or farms and vineyards. These, of course, can vary depending on the destination and/or season. Not every employer needs a written application, but, it’s perhaps not a bad idea to take a translated CV with you. This enables you perhaps to get a slightly better paid job. As well as the traditional jobs for money WWOOFing is getting more popular. In return for work you get board and lodging. In spite of all the many advantages Work and Travel has to offer, not all combinations of travel and work fit together. This is because many countries don’t offer visas for this type of travel or the wages are so low that it’s more sensible to work in your homeland, save money and then travel.
The unchallenged number 1 in Work and Travel is Australia, followed by New Zealand and Canada. The infrastructure for backpackers is very well developed. There are lots of cheaper hotels and many jobs that can be carried out easily by backpackers. As soon as you arrive everything seems to fall into place. Additionally, there are breath-taking landscapes, priceless experiences and many new friendships with other backpackers. When you read the testimonies from people who have done Work and Travel, then you repeatedly read ‘It was the best time of my life’. And in fact - so carefree, so eventful and so intensive is hardly any other time of your life. So, what are you waiting for?

Out into nature Sport feels good and is really healthy; everyone knows this. Fewer people know how important the fascia is for skin and muscles - for a healthy body and for optimal movement patterns. Fascia are small fibres that cover muscles and organs in your body. All in all, they form a white, nearly transparent, structure – connective tissue. Many scientists believed over a longer time that fascia was dead tissue – they now know
30 | radon-bikes.com
it’s not. Fascia are full of receptors. Are they stuck together due to wrong load or permanent stress – the answer is pain. Nowadays, special training devices and exercises have been developed that loosen the fascia. Even the sock company Falke has taken up this issue. ‘Impulse running system’ is a revolutionary technique with which you can activate the fascia over a functional clothing and use the positive effects in a completely new way.

Due to the special structure of knitted and silicon dimples, this new product, ‘Impulse Running Line’ stimulates, when jogging, targeted muscles and joints and the underlying tissues. These impulses are passed up to the brain that then these appropriate muscles are controlled so that the movement is optimally carried out. Feet, knees and hips are stabilised, take-off movements, as well as arm and leg swing, are improved and back and stomach muscles are supported or strengthened due to the influence of the shoulders and torso. The stimulation of the upper part of the body leads to a upright
posture meaning that the sportsperson can breathe effortlessly. The effect; you run more relaxed and more coordinated and therefore healthier. This stimulation depends on your own running style and the position of your joints, meaning that the motion sequence, according to the producer, will be improved, individually. Of course this apparent miracle product is not inexpensive. The price, including function shirt, tights and socks, is 390 euros. But you don’t have to have a conscience when buying these products, they are all produced under fair conditions in Germany.

‘Falling water’ is classified as the masterpiece of America’s renowned architect - Frank Lloyd wright. Lloyd Wright was assigned to design a holiday and weekend resort that was to emphasize Laurel Highlands’ natural beauty. But Lloyd wright had other plans. Instead of just planning the house so that it had the most beautiful view of the scintillating mountain scenery, he let the house ‘melt’ into the surroundings. He constructed the building as if it were floating above the waterfall. If you are sitting in the lounge you can hear the whooshing of the water that flows through, underneath. The walls are made of nearby rocks and small parts of the cliffs, on which the house was built, rise slightly out of the floor.
36 | radon-bikes.com
This makes ‘Falling water’ to one of the best examples of organic architecture. No surprise that this masterpiece has been converted to a museum. Albert Einstein, Frieda Kahlo and Brad Pitt belong to the group of millions of people who have visited ‘Falling Water’. Public tours are almost every day. As well as regular tours, there are also special tour offers such as sunset or brunch tours. Perhaps you’d like to experience the very special flair of the Laurel Highlands at sunset or the breath taking atmosphere of a sunny day by brunch? You can’t be nearer to nature than here….

Since he was 15 Daniel Wartacz (founder of Bonner manufaktur) wanted to make his very own gin. His Swedish grandmother was the reason for this idea. She would always drink gin and tonic at special occasions. That’s how she got the nickname ‘Queen Mum’ from the other members of the family. These memories, the passion for gin and a dream to create something in his own handwork was the corner stone for Naked Gin. The first 290 bottles were filled in summer 2015; numbered and sealed by hand. Each bottle carries the name of one of the 290 Swedish municipals – a reminder of the founder’s 2nd homeland.

Daniel Wartacz worked long and hard until the recipe was perfect. Now, traditional methods and high-quality ingredients shape the manufacturing process. The Bonner Manufaktur distils fourfold in an over 100-year-old Alambique. The ingredients are chosen carefully. The juniper berries come from Italy and have been dried for over two years on bast mats before being processed. Lavender form the French Provence and dried sloe are the main botanicals that give this gin a very special note. Ginger and sun-dried pepper care for the perfect finalizing.
Juniper berries, a little lavender, sloe, a breath of ginger and sun-dried pepper and the perfect gin is ready.

My first World Cup Albstadt 2016 Theresia Schwenk
I received my nomination for the European World Cup only 3 weeks before the World Cup in Albstadt. I was, of course, delighted; it was a real surprise for me as I hadn’t been able to objectively judge my performance and that’s why I was even more thrilled as I got the ‘go ahead’ from the national coach. The training was no different than that when training for the national league. I just kept telling myself to that it was a race like any other. But of course it wasn’t. At this time, I learnt how important mental training was – really, really important. The best ladies in the world are at the start, and that alone is reason enough to make you nervous.
42 | radon-bikes.com
I decided to spend lots of time with friends and family before the race. That gave me additional peace and inner calm. That I was allowed to start my world cup premiere on a RADON prototype was like a fairy tale for me. It seemed too good to be true! It is always an honour to be allowed to ride a prototype. It was a spontaneous idea that was fulfilled at the last minute. The first time I saw the frame I knew that I wanted to ride this bike as soon as possible. I thought about the World Cup immediately, and told RADON about my ideas and plans. Together we then developed the masterplan. Lisa and I would both be cycling the prototypes in Albstadt.
This race was the craziest thing ever, for me. The whole process is not comparable, not a little, with the national league. Nearly everyone is as friendly and open but it’s more professional; beginning with the collection of the race number, going up to the defined training time on the track up. The race itself was just super, exaggeratedly exhausting and hard. My body gave everything it could. I was at my limit all of the time. The fans at the side of the track cheered twice as loud as at the national league and were twice as jollier and they seemed really happy being there, just being a part of it all. I really enjoyed the race but I also wanted a good result. The start was good and after the first round I was the best German at the 17th position. I started 62nd and on the last row – I was happy that I had managed to start so well. But then I noticed that I couldn’t hold the speed and had to slow down a little. But still, I didn’t lose too much ground, and my opponents were in the same situation as I was. My fall in the penultimate round stole my position from the world’s top 25. I was 24th when in Devil’s Corner my front wheel slipped. Really annoying – but that’s sport. One second happy and content, the next lying on the floor, face full of mud and cuts and bruises on my legs, and just because I wasn’t concentrated for a silly simple second...5 opponents overtook me and then, due to the 80% rule, I was taken out of the race. Still, all in all, it was an incredible feeling and I learnt lots in this this race. A 29th place isn’t that bad for the very first World Cup. When I think of this day, then I have a wide grin on my face. I enjoyed every single second of it – in spite of all the energy it took and all the defeats I seemed to go through – but in the end the highlights were predominant.

street food Consumption from all over the world
46 | radon-bikes.com
Street Food: Again, a hip trend that comes from the metropolises of the world to Europe. The concept can be very quickly explained. On so-called street food markets or festivals, cooking enthusiasts bring together culinary delicacies from all over the world. You decide what you’d like to eat (you’re stuck for choice), pay for it, and enjoy immediately.
Different than fast food places; the choice is larger, more exotic and usually healthier. The quality is better, the atmosphere more sociable and the odours that ooze out of the small buses and vans are, simply described.. just delicious. This trend is spreading more and more around European cities. We have chosen 3 street-food hotspots. A visit is definitely worthwhile.

copenhagen
Copenhagen Street Food | Warehouse 7 & 8 | Papirøen Trangravsvej 14 | 1436 Copenhagen | info@copenhagenstreetfood.dk
If you’re looking for street-food in Copenhagen, then go to Papirøen. That is the place to be. A former paper factory that has been unceremoniously converted into a food hall. Instead of seeing uncountable piles of boxes full of paper, the hall offers 35 street-food stalls, in which you can taste and buy the most varied culinary highlights. The selection stretches from Asian, to Mexican up to traditional Danish food. Sustainability is written in capital letters in Papirøen. Old materials are reused. In one corner a freight container, in the other a couple of rusty caravans; now and again a dilapidated window from one of the buildings of this food hall. This shabby-chic combined with the typical Danish attention to detail, expresses a special charm and atmosphere.
Another speciality at this food hall is the own currency. A so-called Cowcash coin - value 25 Danish crowns. Money can be exchanged there and is accepted at all food stalls. If this is too much effort for you, you can, of course just use your debit card! By good weather you can sit on deckchairs, relax and enjoy the lovely view of the harbour, the Royal Opera house and the Royal Theatre. But even when the weather god isn’t in a good mood, there is still enough room inside to relax and enjoy. At the weekend there are also other organised events. With DJs and exhibitions, small music festivals and flea markets. Every visit to Copenhagen’s street-food halls is an innovative and exciting experience.
Amsterdam Foodhallen Amsterdam | Bellamyplein 51 | 1053 Amsterdam Niederlande | info@foodhallen.nl Here in Amsterdam you can find many national and international specialities that have to be tried. Although the stalls are spread around the city, ‘De foodhallen’ (food halls) in the Kinkerbuut district is a real highlight. People with various demands and tastes meet here on 2 storeys of street-food market. There are around 20 stalls in which high-quality and

exotic dishes are served. In all corners you smell different spices, herbs and other delicious aromas – and you can try small portions before you decide which dish is your real favourite. Whether Spanish tapas or Dutch cheese specialities
Berlin Markthalle Neun | Eisenbahnstraße 42-43 | 10997 Berlin-Kreuzberg info@markthalleneun.de The street-food wave has finally reached Germany. And, as usual the biggest choice of street-food markets can be found in the capital city, Berlin. One of the first regular events organised is the ‘street-food Thursday’ in Markthalle Neun in Berlin Kreuzberg. Every Thursday (and this since 2013), the doors open between 5pm and 10 pm for this gastronomical paradise. You are really spoilt for choice here: British pies, Mexican tacos, Nigerian FuFu or would you prefer something different, something more exotic? The atmosphere is here (how else
could it be?) hip and relaxed. There’s a DJ and lots of open-minded people who chit-chat with each other at ease with each other… This is just typical for Berlin. There’s only one small bitter pill; Street-food Thursday attracts so many people that it’s often difficult to find a place to eat. But still, this market hall is worth a visit. And because there are so many new delicacies that have to be tried – perhaps it’s worth visiting a lot more than just one time.
or even oriental dishes. It’s similar to Copenhagen – a massive choice. But even the best eater is finally filled to pussy’s bow! And everyone knows that exciting activities can’t be
done with a full stomach, so, you can just go and watch a good film at the cinema right next door to the market.

From all these ingredients gourmets indulge in these culinary delights. Even wine from Majorca is being praised farfurther than Spain’s boarder. Many of the grown and produced olive-oil belongs to the best of the world; marmalade, almond-cake and spicy sobra s d a s a u s a ges, as well as
Ensaimada belong to the export-hits. And we shouldn’t forget the island-typical digestives such as Hierbas, Palo, Mesclat. The exclusive treats of Majorca can be enjoyed at home – take a bit of the holiday and Majorcan feeling home. In the Online-shop www. mallorquiner.com, you can find which Balearic cuisine and wines are available with only a couple of mouse-clicks. Combine a visit in Megastore in Hardtberg with a visit to Majorca to the ‘der Mallorquiner’ in the industrial park in Bornheim-Bonn and experience the culinary holiday-feeling of Majorca. Megastore and ‘Der Mallorquiner’ are only 11 kilometres away from each other.

Your name Elisabeth (Lisa) Brandau. What’s your occupation At the moment I am MTB pro and team manager.I work in cooling systems and consultant for building energy. How old are you 30. What does earthly happiness mean to you? My son maximilian. What is the worst thing that could happen to you? If something happened to my family. Where would you like to live? In a quiet place with my family. Which mistakes can you forgive quickly? Can’t really say. Important that people admit to their mistakes. Which characteristics do you value about men? Logical thinking and being pragmatic. Unfortunately, this species is getting extinct. Which characteristics do you value By women? Perseverance and that she would do anything for her family. This species is also becoming extinct :( Your favourite virtue? Giving up is not possible. Your favourite occupation? Being with my son and dog outside. Who or what would you have liked to be? Nobody. Everybody has a special composite. Your main trait? I never give up.

What are you improving at the moment ? Driving technique, power, coordination, perseverance and mental training; but also my equipment. Do you like the track in Rio? I haven’t tried it yet, but the altitude is perfect for me. I am a biker with much power and can implement my strength well. I am convinced that this strength in Rio is my advantage. How are you going to prepare for the next weeks? After the Olympia qualification I’m going to have a weekend off. And then I’ll carry on training till the world Cup. The main goal is of course Olympic racing – if I’m allowed to cycle with the team – then I want to be at the top. What do you like about your friends the most? That they’re always there for me although I’m often away and we hardly see each other. Your biggest mistakes? Being too tense. Your dream of luck? You don’t dream luck, you have it. Your state of mind? In here and now. Your motto? Only those who fight can win. Where do you see yourselfIn 5 years’ time? Happy with my family and company. Which car would you like to Drive? I’ve driven many dream cars, unfortunately bikes don’t fit in. Do you ride you bike as a Hobby? Of course. You’re on the way to a nomination for the Olympic games in Rio. What do you need for success at the top of the ladder? Discipline and professionality! Your personal wishes are not important. Your personal environment must be supportive and you always have to keep working on yourself. And you should never rest on your laurels.
It’s going to be difficult for the national trainer. How do you see that? I don’t think it’s difficult at all. Sabine Spitz is clearly at the top. She has shown excellent performance and she knows how to prepare, perfectly. She has won all possible medals at the Olympic games. And but for 2 exceptions I have been able to show that I am conditionally second or even first position. I have proved to myself that I can ride at the top.
The mountain bike has been celebrating its triumph over 25 years in Europe, and there is no region that is so close to this type of sport than Lake Garda.

Whether marked by history as a tour district with melodic names such as Tremalzo, Monte Baldo and Altissimo, or as a destination for Alp crossing, or as a test track for the leading specialist magazines; the military roads around the ‘Lago’ have seen more knobby tyres on its tracks than any other trails in the world. As well as the tiny town Torbole, Riva can name itself a definite biker-mecca. More so since, in 1994, the BIKEFestival Garda Trentino was called to life bringing many thousands of bikers to the Lake for 3 days. As well as tours, various racing formations and naturally lots of
parties, there are around 150 exhibitors who show new products all around the theme of mountain bikes. At the end of April our Radon team had to pack cars and lorries and off it was to the warm spring temperatures of the south. As well as 35 test bikes we also took with us a brand new prototype from 2017 (look at SLIDE 140+) and many other highlights for visitors in our saddlebag. After a mere hour after the festival had begun 20 participants had to ‚saddle up’.

The RADON cross country pros Elisabeth (Lisa) Brandau und Theresia Schwenk on the rostrum after the Festival-Marathons
Happy participants of the RADON tours RADON offered two guided tours on the trails around Riva del Garda; one of the tour guides was downhill star Johannes Fischbach (RADON-Magura-Factory team) and the other guide was the downhill cross-country and marathon pro, Elisabeth Brandau (RADON-EBE-Racing-Team). The next highlight was planned for Friday, ‘Pump Battle powered by RADON’. Elisabeth Brandau, Theresia Schwenk and Johannes Fischback competed against 4X stars; Tomas Slavic, Matti Happacher, Laura Brethauer und Steffi Marth. This all happend on a Pump-Track-racing track developed by our Radon team and PR manager, Joost Wichmann (former 4X World Champion). The culinary highlight for most of our visitors was our legendary RADON-BBQ on Saturday, where our cyclists swapped their handlebars for a barbecue tong. talk about technology and new products. And, as every year, there was no need to worry about any food rests...all gone! The sport aspect ran to our expectations on this Saturday just as we’d hoped . Lisa Brandau won the over 44 kilometre marathon race along the Ronda Piccola and Theresia Schwenk followed reaching 3rd place – congratulations to you two! After a change of weather on Sunday the first version of the Northlake Enduro race took place, competing for us was James Shirley from Radon-Magura-Factory-Team. The already very technical stages became, due to the rain, even more demanding. James rode a great race on his new SWOOP 170 and even though he fell he still managed a top ten result. Talking about SWOOP 170; the winner of our RADON contest ‘Let’s paint’ received his very own new custom-design frame in Riva.

After the 27,5” wheels, 27,5+ or 650b plus describe the newest status in mountain bike wheel size. Rims with a measurement of 27,5” and a width of 35-40 mm hold tyres between 2,6” and 3” measurement giving massive grip and probably revolutionising driving characteristics. At the beginning I was quite sceptical about this new size of wheel, but after the first test ride I was enthralled and I rolled up my sleeves and started working with Bodo, immediately, to get this project as far as possible as soon as possible. The technical conditions of the + wheels fit very well to All Mountain Bikes that let you have fun riding and that are used for technically sophisticated trails- then here the wider tyres have a great advantage. The better grip increases safety for the driver and makes it possible to ride at spots that would have been avoided before. So much for the theory … It’s there; in front of me, constructed and ready to go – our new SLIDE+ as a prototype. My first glance and my first thought, ‘Wow! This is a real cool bike’. Tyres measuring 2.8” give this All Mountain Bike with 140 mm spring deflection at the front and 130mm at the rear quite a casual optic, it looks less chubby than a fatbike, but has something more martial about it than a ‘normal’ All Mountain. But I’ve looked at it long enough- up on the trail! The seating position is as expected, central and sporty. The view of the tyre from above bodes no good for the first rise but my high expectations are fulfilled, Slide+ climbs just as good as its brother with the smaller tyres and isn’t irritated by the longer tarmac uphill road. The really first ‘wow’ effect comes at the first steeper downhill bit; the tyres give SLIDE+ an apparent limitless grip. So hard I try I can’t get this bike NOT to remain calm, and not only that, but it’s so much fun! I get used to the new, special ride feeling and what should be a familiarisation round becomes quite an extended tour. In the following weeks I reflexively take the SLIDE+ when I want to have fun on a mountain bike, because that’s what it offers in plenitude. The + is for me a + on riding fun. Look forward to autumn when SLIDE+ is in the stores; more about colours, geometries, price and equipment will be disclosed in October.

and the winner is ‌ Each year we ask all renowned national and international print and online editors, as well as online portals to come and test. Bikes from all manufacturers are put through the acid test; blood, sweat and excitement. The pressure is immense. Is our product as good this year as it was over the last years? Do the editors or testers like our geometry? What are the test conditions going to be like? Weeks after having sent our bikes to the test, all Radon members (even after years and years of testing) are so nervous and excited about the results. How have we done? And every time the joy is overwhelming and drives us on for even better performance.

The sole direct retailer in test, Radon, can equip its ZR with high-quality add-on-components and still keep a nice low price. The whole packet is consistent. The tyres on the 29 system wheels give enough grip, the handling on this rather small frame is agile, still the straight-line driving performance fits and it lets itself playfully move due to its light weight. The Fox fork does a good job and reduces the blows on the ergonomically, well-designed cockpit. Radon stays with its proven material; Bosch CX-drive with a 15 pinion at the front and an 11-42 cassette at the rear. It has a good kingpin and can therefore climb all steep sections willingly.

E-Bikes 2016
Laughed at, at the beginning, then accepted in the course of everyday mobility and today seen as sports equipment and a status symbol. The sales hit under bikes – E-Bikes have written success story, and, have become literally the motor in the bike branch. When you look at the idea behind the pedelec (the E-bike) the cyclist only supports the motor when he pedals. When you look carefully at these facts it’s clear where its success comes from. Real cycling feeling with a natural extra on performance; the freedom of being able to ride on the cycle lane (with 25 km/h top speed), no license necessary or any insurance and absolutely no problems looking for a parking space. These are a couple of reasons that make the E-bike to a perfect vehicle in urban surroundings. Those who have tried it once and have experienced the typical ‘E-bike grin’ won’t get it off that quickly but will notice how many possibilities an E-bike has to offer outside the city. Whether refreshing MTB tours or an extended trip with baggage or trailer; it’s a lot more comfortable and easier with an engine.
In the 2016 product range there are many hybrid models for all ranges of application bringing complete E-bike fun at the customary Radon low budget prices. Mountain bike, trekking or cross bike, all Radon pedelecs focus firmly on the motor technology from market leader Bosch. Combined with a 10 or 11 Shimano-drive you have the ideal combination of transmission range, driving torque and weight.

SUMMARY Extra light, safe, comfortable – the RADON Sunset Supreme is a tempting offer without weak points. A definite tip.
Application area Bike travel Daily Sport Terrain Assesment Driving performance comfort Equipment/processing Price/performance
Radon has five models in the urban E-bike range. These can be tried out by 200 dealers or at Megastore in Bonn. The top model Sunset Supreme Hybrid shines with consistent high-quality equipment at a typical middle class price. A highlight is the cultivated and strong Bosch Performance motor with large accumulator. But the details are right, too. The XT- disc brakes are for the application area suitably large. The interaction between the two-finger brake lever with the Shimano XT- gear lever is exemplary ergonomic. The switching characteristic XT-typically exact and direct. Clever detail; the cassette with the large pinion allows a 20% gradient energy saving while peddling in eco-mode. In spite of the slightly erect seating position, this RADON is fun to ride, doesn’t nerve with hardness because the suspension fork works well. It is one of the two lightweights in test; the driving characteristics and touring capability are problem free.

BikeSport News 5/6 2016: The trail-hunter, RADON has overworked its SKEEN for the current model year. The only bike on the test field rshows itself as a 120 mm version of the SKEEN, on 27,5” wheels and an aluminium frame. When talking about spring deflection, Skeen is at the top end of the scale. Our test bike, SKEEN 120 10.0 is the top model from one of five bikes – Lady-bike, included from a former series. The application areas for SKEEN 120 are; Marathon race, difficult trails or quick training laps. This bike presents itself as a playful but at the same time confident fully. It is relatively short and compact and lets itself be chased around trails. RADON has treated this top model to (for a really low price), Fox spring elements that work well together and leave no desires open. They start nicely and master even rough passages of the test track without any problems. We don’t miss the fact that the suspension strut and fork from the handlebars can’t be blocked. The geometry, size of wheel and spring deflection plus the vario-support that enables a smooth transition from low passages to rough downhills says a lot for trail potential on this Skeen.

SUMMARY Best packet in the test group. Frame, equipment, weight and handling are top. Deserved test winner!
The newly developed Slide 140 Carbon was able to sparkle with its talent in autumn last year. And it didn’t disappoint in the first real comparisons. Alone a glimpse into the test results let us guess; what could go wrong with this chassis? The carbon frame weighs only 2,5 kilos (with dampers); its geometry is modern, rigid enough, convincingly processed and well protected. Nobody can do it better for this low price than RADON. In one of the test magazines the tyres in series (2,25 Nobby-Nic in the light version) were criticized as ‘inappropriate’. RADON boss, Chris Stahl, reacted to this critic and gave the Slide 8.0 customers a second set – for free. The combination of 2,35 Nobby-Nic in trail mixture and Rock Razor rear tyres in Pace compound makes this bike around 300 grams heavier, and we are rewarded with lots of riding fun – at least we were on our Lake Garda test rounds. The chassis lies rich, the seating position and handling rank among the best of the group. Ideal for bikers who want speed. Slide Carbon rides uphill at the top of the group – and with the 2,25 series tyres in a different league.

BikeSportNews 11/12 2015 This RADON Slide Carbon 140 shows how light a powerful an all-mountain can be. The developers have given everything in relation to equipment. A longer top tube combined with a short stem gives Slide a modern trail geometry; effective pedalling gives downhill control. Due to its short chainstays and deep centre of gravity, Slide is a trail-rocket that, thanks to its 11 kilos, lets itself be effortlessly accelerated and playfully chased through terrains. This RADON lies steady on the trail, the chassis levels everything away. Technical and crooked passages are clearly mastered as well as high-speed sections. Uphill you notice the super balance, effective pedal position and of course, the light weight.

General / Optic When you lift this RADON out of the very light box, you are quite surprised. Wherever you look; carbon. From the optical aspect everything fits together and is quite discreet in its colours. Your first impression is that you will have lots of fun on trails on this bike and that you’ll be fast. The Components RADON has left nothing by chance on these components. This bike is equipped, from the top to the bottom, only with noble parts – and where possible, carbon. The core element consists of a Fox Float damper and 34” fork. The chassis harmonises, in general, extremely well and offers 160 mm spring deflection at the front as well as the rear. Nothing is left to chance for propulsion and therefore SRAM’s ‘XX1’ rear derailleur with 11 speed cassette has been assembled. The combination of ‘Reverb Stealth’ seat post and Fizik ‘Antares’ saddle is, in our opinion, the highest comfort for seating performance. A quick change of saddle-height is no problem in the heat of the moment. […]

FAZIT runs longer and longer and longer! Swoop fascinates me with unbelievable downhill quality. And it still pedals uphill respectably well. It’s just not playful and bubbly.
‘Superenduro’ calls RADON its 170 mm bullet. Uphill like an enduro, downhill like a free-rider. Does this work? For over two years the Bonn distributors have been making the enduro scene slightly crazy; Slide 160 won the enduro test from Mountain Bike editors twice in a row! And in 2016? Its big brother is coming; ‘Swoop 170’. It springs with even more hub – 170mm at the front and rear; it has a solid acting aluminium frame and a strong downhill-orientated geometry. RADON calls this ‘Superenduro’. Super is the price-performance ratio!
+ Brut downhill power + Excellent, balanced chassis + fabulous priceperformance-ratio
The parts have been thought through to the smallest detail, and the price is red hot! Assembled on the test model are Fox spring elements and in series on the Swoop 9.0, first class Rock Shox fork (Lyrik) and dampers (Monarch Plus). As usual, RADON mastermind Bodo Probst trusts a four- hinged-chainstay-kinematic and new is a Flip-Chip on the steering dampers. From here the position of the steering and seating angle (maximum 1 degree) can be altered in 3 positions. First impression ‘in the wild’: this thing is quite long! The enormous reach (460 mm, size M) as well as the wheelbase provide extreme driving safety and smoothness. Together with the powerful Probst’s chassis, this Swoop waves others away as though they were irritating flies and stays calm even in the coarsest turmoil – a downhill monster.

Beef it, or leave it!
Barbecues were yesterday
Weren’t those good old days when dad put a couple of bangers on the barbecue on a sunny summer Saturday or Sunday afternoon? Or when it aunt and uncle came to visit; something more special than a sausage; a chop!! Today, it can gladly be a piece of steak. Up to now, ok, but just at this point this theme is going to become more complicated than science or more diverse than world-religion. Which meat should we use? Dry aged, Waguy, Kobe, Angus or just a good rump steak form the farmer round the corner? When, and how and what herbs and spices should be used? Should it be marinated? And finally which method of preparation is the best? Charcoal, lava-stone, sous-vide, gas, electric, or just in the frying pan? Those who then try to produce the perfect temperature that is no longer described as English, medium or well done will probably be on his way to the next steak house, and have it done for you!
radon-bikes.com | 95
Frank Hecker, who lives only a couple of kilometres away from RADON megastore had an decisive experience in how to prepare the perfect steak; in such a steakhouse in Brooklyn; in Peter-Luger-Steakhouse, and this way of making steaks should be no problem whatsoever for anybody to do – he thought. The answer to the question, what makes a steak a steak, is apparently just a value: 800° Celsius! This is the key to an incomparable taste, to a delicious caramelised crust, just to get the perfect roast aromas, says Frank. But the way there isn’t easy. Together with his junior school friend and current business partner, Marc Kirwald, they built, experimented and tested to finally (and
96 | radon-bikes.com
with some help from another school-friend, Frantz Konzen) build the first beefer in the world; built in Frantz’s metal construction workshop. From this moment nobody barbecued any more – they beefed! How does it work? Simple. The steak (or whatever meat you use) is placed in the beefer for around 2 x 50 seconds in infernal heat, then a short pause. After 2 x 30 seconds the crust is there and the roast aromas start to develop. Meat juice that drops doesn’t burn, but is collected in a tray and then used as a basis for gravy. Depending on how you like your meat, it can either ‘rest’ or can ‘beef’ further in the gastro-trays. This result has impressed famous German chefs,
such as Tim Mälzer, who has been a convinced beefer right from the star.
800°; there is be a recipe book around steak, fish, seafood, vegetables and even desserts.
Three years after company start-up, the beefers aren’t now only at home in Germany. Customers in Switzerland, Austria, Spain and Denmark – even in America and Australia can look forward to a delivery from Rhineland in Germany. There are beefer courses and workshops. And all those who want to delve deeper in the magical power of
The beefer is produced in Bonn in a workshop for disabled people and in production rooms in Bad Honnef. Australia and America will have to wait a little until Beefers can be delivered there, but beefer is being internationalised. The cookbook can be bought at www.beefer.de.

SUMMARY Harmonious bike without any technical weakness. Best equipment in test, very sporty seat position .
Looking at its predecessor, the new Spire frame looks a lot more distinguished. It’s 100g lighter and at the same time more stable. The frame is more comfortable due to the change of the size of the seat post; 27,2 mm; the seating position sporty as a result of the short head tube. Those who like this will have much fun with this bike. H&S (Bonner distributor – the name behind RADON) was very generous; equipped with a complete Ultegra group, light Ksyrium-Elite-wheels von Mavic that roll on 25-Millimeter-tyres. The Syntace handlebar lies well in the hands, and one of the best saddles, Syntace SLR saddle, is mounted on the carbon post. The robust transport box protects the bike well by transportation

You immediately notice RADON’s Vaillant by its angular aero profiles. A carbon-areo frame for this price, wow! Not only that; RADON equips it with a complete Ulegra group and high-quality wheels with slightly higher rims. This can only be possible due to Radon’s distribution-concept on the Internet and its 80 distribution partners. Vaillant shows strength on the road; with distinct straight-running-ability and decent propulsion reveal its speed-intention. SUMMARY Good frame-set, easy to maintain, high-quality equipment, nicely calculated. The geometry makes a balanced, rather comfortable, seating position possible.
The Sage Carbon is a fair offer; it has a solid carbon frame and high quality equipment. In contrast to the other racing models, H&S’s own brand has given this bike a quite comfortable, recommended for longer distances, seat position. The very stiff and therefore stable frame makes it interesting for heavier cyclists. A complete Ultegra in combination with a carbon frame at this low price is only available from competitors in mail order. The grippy, thickly wound Syntace steering compensates the hardness of the stiff fork very effectively.

If you’re looking for a robust and maintenance-easy bike, then friends of light metal will find what they’re looking for at H&S, Bonn. This dark black anodised frame with outer lying brake and switch cables is quite modest, but uncovers itself to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing on the test bench. This frame belongs to the best aluminium frames of the last previous years; size 58 and 1205 grams heavy offering top-rigidity-value. You can see that it’s not a cheap frame as the welding seams are very even and nicely worked on. Because of the relatively short head tube and the 120 mm long stem the cyclist sits quite sportily stretched. The thick Syntace handlebars, which is lightly bent direction rider, grips perfectly. Thanks to light rolling 25 tyres from Schwalbe and a carbon post from Syntace, this bike conveys more comfort than the measured values suggest. Wechselszene has exisited for eight years. Now we’ve got our own hoodies, t-shirts, towels, hats, competition dress. Stickers with the skeleton logo. After all this time, I still think it’s all very cool. In my office everything was in the ‘Wechselszene’ design. Only one dream was not going to be fulfilled – my dream from a ‘Wechelszene’ racing bike.
114 | radon-bikes.com
As having a sport agency, the network is quite big; I know sponsors, who support our events – such as the Chiemsee Triathlon or the Chiemgau Trophy; I know exhibitors, who sell our products and I know so many sport interested people who just live and love sport. So, it’s no surprise that away from business contacts normal conversations happen.
And that’s how I was somehow able to propose my dream of my ‘wechselszene’ bike to Radon. Suddenly, this blue-white skeleton wasn’t a dream any more, but in feasible reach. A layout was made. I was allowed to put my wishes to paper; I would have loved to swap these drawings for a bike – immediately. But, a good thing is worth waiting for. As there were so many minute details, the layout had to be changed, as it wouldn’t have been possible to lacquer the frames as I had designed – too filigree! Small areas were printed on a foil and produced under clear varnish. The main motive could be lacquered in a normal
process. Once again, a big thanks to company Rockstein, who did it all exactly as we wanted! The frame went to Syntace; my personal dream-bike was becoming real. Everything fitted. Even when some things took longer than expected until my bike was with me; it was worth the wait. And, as my bike finally stood in front of me, I could hardly believe it.
After the successful seat position analysis from Jürgen Trapp from Sporteffekt, my new perfect racer was to be used at Easter in Tuscany. I can’t tell you how happy I was to have my very own designed bike - this a feeling that really cannot be described.

If you ask someone in the Netherlands what he uses his bike for, then he or she would probably stand there, shaking their heads as if you were crazy. What a question! For our neighbours, a bike is like milk - a daily product. Bikes are THE means of transportation. In Germany, the answer would be a totally different one. The answer is so complex; where, why, what weather, what sporty conditions and so on and so on…. The person who asked the question could be shaking his head at the end of the conversation. Radon has decided for a ‘happy medium’ model range and set clear points. Still, the most important factor is having fun and the diversity of application must be in the foreground. We think that the question must be, ‘What is important for me with my bike’.

Trekking bikes are jack of all trades in the bike scene. So it’s no surprise that the RADON trekking series offers the largest selection. Adventurers on multi-day-tours, commuters on their way to work, or just leisure cyclists on the way to the beer garden. RADON offers trekking bikes with mud guards, luggage racks and lighting system – and unparalleled flexibility for open minded cyclists TCS (TREKKING COMFORT SERIES): High quality and robust double butted aluminium frame with integrated mount for a kickstand on chainstays, comfortable frame geometry and adjustable suspension forks starting at 449 euros. TLS (TREKKING LIGHT SERIES): With rigid fork and a light stretched seat position, this is the sportier alternative to TCS. Available as lady and men version starting at 539 euros. SUNSET: High-end trekking bikes with three times double butted aluminium frame in hydroforming design. High quality suspension fork, disc brakes and chain… with wide transmission offering a certain plus on comfort and safety. RADON trekking pleasure the extra class starting from 1,099 euros.
CROSS SCART and SCART light have the ideal foundation for those who enjoy bike trips away from pathed tracks. Starting from 449 euros. Profiled tyres, suspension fork and disc brakes allow these cross bikes a trip in moderate terrain at all times. In contrast to a pure mountain bike the tyres are smaller and the transmission is designed to be stronger on faster tour-trips. Additionally, Scart-Light scores with a less heavy and more rigid frame.

The bikes of the URBAN and SKILL series are the purists under the RADON bikes (when you disregard pedigree sport devices such as racers and mountain bikes). SKILL is for light weight and speed; the light chassis with rigid fork, the derailleur gears with racing transmission and without the every-day features such as luggage rack, lighting system, and mud guards. But that makes Skill to a fitness trainer on the way to the office. There are also models in the URBAN series without suspension forks (also purchasable with everyday equipment (FE models)). Rear gear hubs ensure smooth conduct and low-maintenance gear change. Puristic cycling fun starting at 539 euros.

LIVELY ALLROUNDER RADON TCS 9.0; a Radon trekking top-seller for years and still being continually optimised. The disc version is the best equipped bike in the trekking comfort series (TCS) with derailleur, and was best seller in the RADON programme for those who place value on high-quality components and disc brakes. Also the built-in suspension fork convinced, as it is easy to use over a lever from the handlebar. The built-in Shimano XT components are well-known for their reliability. For safety we’ve got the TCS 9.0 with 160 mm brake discs. The Busch and Müller front lights combined with a Toplight rear light bring broadband light source and optimal safety under one roof. A light luggage rack and wide mud guards make RADON’S top seller to a jack of all trades. Additionally, the 16kg RADON TCS comes with a mini pump and top wheels. RIDING IMPRESSION The seat position is ergonomically perfect and well-balanced, ideal for tours but also for zippy manoeuvres by sporty tours. Its agility, weighing ride and quick acceleration is fun. The precise and brisk direct switiching of the ‘XT’ 30 gear dearailleurs is a perfect match. The excellent disc brakes ensure for intelligent slow-down in every situation. Here is even braking fun!

Luxury was written in capital letters in RADON’s product specifications. Bonn distributor has given its top model from the Sunset Series (nearly) everything that’s possible; an aluminium frame made with much effort and craftsmanship – seems as if it were in just one piece and the high quality suspension fork with tapered switching tube for rigidity. Complete XT equipment including disc brakes, good, fast wheels and a top lighting system. Potential is wasted, a little, due to an unnecessary tight shift cable arc on the head tube. Champions and the Berlin Wall falls down. Two young entrepreneurs decide to change the cycle branch and establish H&S in this exciting era. Ralf Heisig und Christopher Stahl hit the bullseye. They soon notice that their premises are too small; two moves follow. The company flourishes at the Probsthof in Bonn. The mail order business starts to increase with this new procedure called ‘Internet’, and again the existing premises are again too small.
2007 In 2007 this extremely successful business moves into the adjacent county of Grafschaft. With this new logistic centre thy have improved working conditions to be able to climb to the top of the European summit of this branch. But also the shop is bursting at the seams and so it’s only a matter of time when the next boxes have to be packed.

2012 ... a fitting plot of land was found in Hardtberg, Bonn and the planning began. The first excavators started in April and that was the begin of the building of our new bike sport paradise. 2013 After a record-breaking 11 months of building, the motto was ‘roll up your sleeves and get started’. After two whole days everything from H&S was freighted over to Hardtberg and all shelves were filled – again, in record-breaking time. 2014 In May, after a massive ‘housewarming party’, the big surprise came in November; water on the ground floor! All bikes and the complete workshop was flooded. Great commotion, tinging muscles from clearing out and a construction company in difficulties. After all mistakes had been cleared, our business ran at full speed again, and a very successful year came to an end. As always, we don’t rest on our laurels.

n November this year it will be two years since the death of the actor, Paul Walker. Paul became famous after the first part of Fast and Furious in 2001. As an undercover policeman Brian O’Conner, he managed to gain access to an illegal street-race scene, then being able to convict thieves of lorry-robberies. But O’Conner enjoys the

scene, and becomes friends with one of the most influential street racers in Los Angeles and falls in love with his sister Mia – quite a dilemma. This is the begin of a film adventure with spectacular effects and nerve-racking scenes. Even the most dangerous stunts go well for the immortal hero, but in real life, unfortunately not.

alker was on the way back from a fund-raising event from his own organisation ‘Reach out Worldwide’; an organisation that supports victims of natural disasters. He was sitting on the passenger seat of Roger Rodas’s Porsche as, by excessive speed, it flew out of the bend, hit a lamppost, then a tree before finally setting fire. Both men were dead, immediately. And that was the way that Brian O’Conner lived in film; on the fast lane in a fast sports car. A little less spectacular than in the film, but very, very sad and quite ironic..
the burnt-out wreck of the damaged vehicle © www.atlantablackstar.com
At the time of his death, the shooting from Fast & Furious 7 wasn’t quite finished. Walker’s brothers Caleb and Cody were his double and the unfinished scenes of O’Conner were, with special technical help, wakened to life again. This film was a mega success. More than 1,5 billion dollars in the ticket box making this film to the third most successful films of all times; behind Titanic and Avatar. A prosperous completion of the career of a dead actor. But a much too early one. In the hearts of his relations and fans, the actor lives on. All over the world, thousands of car-mad people came together to pay homage to their idol. Film colleague, Vin Diesel, named his daughter Pauline after him and Walker’s organisation is carrying on with the good work. Walker’s doing will stay unforgotten. In April 2017, The 8th Fast & Furious will be starting in German cinemas. Two further films are planned. So we’ll have to wait and see how Dominic Toretto will cope without his friend. Surfing a little different 138 | radon-bikes.com
Whether relaxing or letting loose, up to your own limitations or just comfortably exploring nature – with stand up paddling (SUP) you can do all of these things. But what is it?
Stand Up Paddling is a new water sport, that is going to be a big hype. You stand on a board that is similar to a surfboard and you get going with a paddle. It sounds simple and after a bit of practice; it is. But you shouldn’t underestimate the effect of this type of sport.
radon-bikes.com | 139
When balancing and paddling; arm, leg and torso-muscles are used. When travelling further distances, you improve endurance and strength – a true full-body-workout and, per hour – 400 calories are burnt! And whilst paddling you get to see places you know from a different aspect. When you’ve learnt to balance then you can try different variations of the typical SUP. You can SUP in a team; SUP polo; 2 competitive teams, who try to manoeuvre the ball into the goal, or you can convert you paddle to a fitness mat and do yoga on the water. Stand up paddling is a very versatile and liked sporty trend that is fun and very multifaceted.

Natures Creation Around 300 million years ago the world was full of forest. Due to sea-level rise and land subsidence the forest slowly disappeared into the sea. The dead plants laid at the bottom of the sea and changed, without oxygen; to turf. This turf was then covered with sand and clay. The weight of this sediment let the temperature of the turf rise, and this chemical process formed turf coal.

Radon‘S Revolution Until coal comes from plants, it takes millions of years. Until carbon becomes one of the fastest and most advanced cross country hard tail frames; a couple of months. Look forward to December and think about how many competitors you’re going to race away from and which competitors you’re going to make really envious.

California. That’s the place where everything happens, that’s the epicentre of the mountain bike world. You can see here what’s hot, and what’s not. I have travelled the world with my bike, but so crazy as it is in California, is nowhere else. It’s time to pack my bags and travel to Socal, to visit a friend.
My old friend is Anneke Beerte. We’re going a bit back to the past as we stood together at the BMX track. This is where we learnt to cycle, we both won the Dutch championship and ten years later Europe Champion 4X. After that, we
both became World Champion in these disciplines. And we also won one or two other prize at Mountainbike FestivaL Crankworx. I stopped then and Anneke carries on and is, at the moment, the current European enduro champion.

Anneke is a very courageous person and there’s nothing that she can’t do on two wheels.Last year she decided to move her life to California, to train and to live there - a step that I would never make. At the moment she’s preparing for the next season in a small village near to Los Angeles.
California Love Ticket and passport in my hand and only one bike as luggage; that’s how I arrive into the promised bike land. After only 15 hours, we land at the airport of Los Angeles, pick up the rented car and drive to Foothill Ranch, where Anneke now lives. Here branch giants, Oakley and Shimano, have their home. I estimated one hour for the journey from L.A. I was too stingy to rent a car with GPS so we search for the area she lives in for ages, as we finally find it we see that it looks like a holiday park.
Coffee in Cali Luckily enough, Anneke has pizzas and I unpack the most necessary things out of my bag and then go to sleep, because tomorrow’s a busy day. The first trials start directly in front of Anneke’s front door. But we’re in America and so we do what the Americans do; we take Anneke’s pickup, put the bikes in the boot and drive the 1000m to the parking place where we then start our trail. There’s a pretty little tent-café here that is managed by a Flemish woman. Me, as a Dutch person, must be careful which words I use, because of the same words, different meanings in Flemish and Dutch. The café is a lively meeting place for bikers, and there’s quite a lot of money standing in form from bikes, at the front door, We ride through the national park ‘Whiting Ranch’. You can ride here or just wander. There are various trails for all levels and all are very well sign-posted. Wide fire lanes up the mountain are taken over by lovely single-trail-runs through the canyon. After coffee in Cali Not and after a warm-up we go down the curvy trail (Borrego trail) and with it, a difficult ascent from around 20 minutes to Cac-

tus Hill. But the reward for this is worth it. After that, a quite technical run followed by a meandering single trail with much flow. After one and a half hours we’ve got the forest back again and suddenly we’re standing at Oakley’s front door. Here’s the next challenge; a really nice pump track that just has to be tried out. Oakley’s sponsors Anneke and the receptionist gives us a quick exciting tour of the company, then we go back to the café and I notice that my jet lag has gone… just pedalled away. Frank, our photographer, used to put motocross rider into the right light and still knows lots of people from this time, even in California. One of them is Swanie, a former motocross champion and now trainer from young talents in this sport. He’s our tour guide today, so he’s taking us and his camera on a tour around Temeluca We park our car at the parking place, which is funnily enough in the middle of a residential area.
Not in shape in the Golden State We’ll probably be leaving this built-up centre but to my surprise other people take their bikes off their cars. We do the same and we ride with a group under the motorway bridge and the trial starts here immediately. Unbelievable. There is so much space but the trails lie directly in populated areas. First of all we ride on a quite technical trail with sharp bends and a couple of rocks to the top, the men are fast and I’m really out of breath.
Where is the drop? I glance over to Anneke, but this tempo seems okay for her. So it’s me that’s not fit. Since I stopped being a pro I’m just not fit enough. But the descent – that has to work. Swarnie warns us about drops but I can’t wait. The men are uphill quicker than downhill. They ride composedly along the trail with real curvy bends, small stone heaps and springs. Perfect for a complete spring mounted XC-bike. Swanie shouts, ‘Watch out for the drpos’, but when I arrive at the bottom, I have to ask him when are the drops coming? The the boys are really fast with the next ascent. I pretend to have a problem with my bike and let the others go on further. Luckily enough, they carry on and I can ride at my own speed again. I arrive at the top just before sunset, at a beautiful place with a fantastic view of the hills of Temecula. According to the men, what comes next is a really difficult downhill, that’s why Anneke and I have to go first. It’s quite stony and there are many sharp cliff edges, but dangerous is something else. The trail is laid out in the typical American way; after stones, a sandy flowy part, that twists its way

around trees and cliffs. For advanced XC-riders, the first part is perhaps a little strenuous but the motocross heroes also admit to having put down their feet the one time or the other! All in all it was a successful day, but now it’s the time to think about other values.. food! We make our way back and without any diversion to Chipotle; where you can eat the best burritos in town!
Beach boys (and a girl) It takes about an hour to Laguna Beach where Crankbrothers have their headquarter. This is the producer of ‘eggbeater’ click-pedals and many other mountain bike accessories. This company had sponsored me over many years and the logo flaunts on Anneke’s race jersey. After a short tour of this company and lunch, then we get ourselves going to the legendary Telonics-trail. But come on, the beach is here, we can’t go without going to the beach - we have just arrived….
Because of staying on the beach, we’re now a little tired. That’s why we let ourselves be shuttled; a 15-minute drive. There’s fabulous view over SoCal Beach and the Pacific Ocean. And then, finally we’re on the Telonics-trail. The first ever official downhill championship was carried out here. Your 29 XC bike can be left at home with good conscience. Anneke and I are here with full suspension bikes and 700 mm spring deflection. Most of the bikers here have decided for a fully-fledged downhill bike. There are various, more simpler trails to the bottom, but Anneke and I want to rifle down a real downhill trail which is very diverse. It has everything; from steep parts (where you really have to sit back in your saddle), long rocky ledges and wide sandy paths. This trail was everything but for a beginner, but for me – it was perfect. Wide grin across my face. Normally I like more flowy trails with small jumps and sharp bends, but the speed and the power with which I rode over the ledges gave me the adrenalin kick that I hadn’t experienced for a long time.
large sunglasses. She feels comfortable here and she’s living her dream. Biking is important here in California. There are trails all over the place and lots of bikers, too. The mountain bike branch booms at the Ocean and the best bit ever; it hardly ever rains here.
Living the California dream California is a fabulous destination for mountain bikers. But, whether New Zealand or British Columbia, I just love travelling to different places in the world and to experience the best spots. But first I’ll stay at home. We’re waiting for our new baby to arrive, and that can’t beat any trail.
Anneke has achieved something that I have been dreaming from all my life; living in the sunshine state - she’s a real California girl now with her very own pick up, cross motor bike and trendy

„Let’s paint“ RADON DESIGN CONTEST 2016 After a two-year pause, we started the design contest anew; we revised and optimised. This year we want, again, to have a new frame designed by a customer. The rules were just the arrangement of the RADON typical design elements such as head badge, logo and font. The frame we chose was Swoop 170. Why? No other frame has drawn so much attention to itself in the recent past than the newly designed and with new technical features, than Swoop 170’s frame. In particular the new FlipChip technology caused a commotion in specialist magazines, in tests and on first rides by first owners. The alteration of the damping linkage geometry can be changed (with the FlipChip) in 3 steps (tour/trail/park). The steering angle and seating angle alters by 0,5°, the bottom bracket height also varies. We received more than 180 designs, hand painted, crazy, dare, plain, up to extravagant – we got everything. After sighting, our jury - consisting of constructors, product managers and graphic designers – chose 50 final designs.

Now it was time for all participants to mobilise friends, to make advertisements or to just convince with conviction. The aim was to get as many votes as possible in two weeks. Finally, Michele L from Italy won with 200 votes lead, and so he was given his brand new Swoop 170 frame set (including dampers) in his very own design. Rockstein produced the frame which was handed over to Michele at the ‘Ziener-BIKE Festival’ in
Riva del Garda by Elisabeth Brandau. We’re looking forward to seeing the bike when it’s complete. Once again, we’d like to thank everyone who competed in the contest, for their creativity - and we’re looking forward to the next competition.
